A Kiss from Her Prince at the Invictus Games Closing Ceremony!

It's the romantic moment we've all been waiting for! A beaming Meghan is kissed by her Prince - a moment Harry knew would be photographed and wanted the world to see.

Over the past week, we have been privileged to witness a spectacle of inspiring competitors, fierce competition and incredible teamwork at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto. Tonight, the achievements of the week were celebrated at the games' closing ceremony.

Meghan sat in the luxury box with her mother Doria. The two are incredibly close; it's a wonderful opportunity for Meghan to share the Invictus experience with her mother.

Rebecca English said Doria flew in from L.A. for the event and to spend time with Harry. The photo below demonstrates how much they enjoyed the evening...a picture is worth a thousand words.

Meghan's close friends Markus Anderson (who accompanied her to the opening ceremony) and stylist Jessica Mulroney were also in the box. Jessica is also a friend and style adviser for Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau who was also in attendance.

It seemed entirely fitting for Meghan to be there tonight. This week has given her a first real taste of royal life, seeing Prince Harry in action and witnessing first-hand how a member of the Royal family can use their role to help others. The appearance is not only a show of support, but again demonstrates the seriousness of the relationship.

During the opening ceremony, as Meghan watched on, Harry said: "In a world where so many have reasons to feel cynical and apathetic, I wanted to find a way for veterans to be a beacon of light, and show us all that we have a role to play; that we all win when we respect our friends, neighbours, and communities." We have seen that light shining brightly over the past week; Harry, the athletes, staff and volunteers should be immensely proud.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Harry reflected on the success of the games: “I’m so pleased with how it’s gone,” he said. “It’s been on another level — it’s been amazing. What’s great is how many kids have been getting into it and showing their support. That’s who we wanted to reach. What people don’t see behind the scenes is that there’s been loads of Invictus things going on in schools across Canada too. Hopefully there’s now a real momentum for next year. We’re in really great place for Sydney.”

To mark the conclusion of the games, an array of international headline music artists assembled to celebrate the achievements and drive of the competitors. The ceremony has been described as a "celebration of spirit", featuring powerhouse musical performances, world dignitaries and inspirational stories as the games are now passed on to Sydney, Australia, host of the 2018 Invictus Games. Performers included Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Kelly Clarkson and Bachman & Turner.

Mr Springsteen spoke about the games before he took to the stage:

"At the Invictus Games, it’s not just about the hurdles that competitors experienced during competition, but about overcoming the obstacles that life has presented them. The games are a remarkable opportunity for brothers and sisters in arms to join forces and demonstrate the true strength of their spirit.  It is an absolute honour and privilege to perform for them at the closing ceremony as a send-off to a week of competition in Toronto."

Onlookers said they appeared to particularly enjoy a three song set by 'The Boss'.

To close the week, the CN tower shone in Invictus yellow.

What a week it's been! Momentum certainly didn't slow down as the week progressed. Yesterday, Prince Harry was joined by former US President Barack Obama, and former US Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Dr Jill Biden, as they cheered on the Team USA wheelchair basketball team, all former US service personnel.

Talk quickly turned to Meghan. More from The Mirror:

'Student Hayley Stover, who found herself on the prince’s other side in the absence of LA-born actress Meghan, 36, told the Sunday People about the encounter.
“Obama asked about Meghan and Harry let him know she had been to watch the tennis with him,” said Hayley, 18. “He asked if she was enjoying the Games and Harry was really smiling as he said yes. He looked so happy. It was cute.'

A spokesman for Mr Obama said the former president wished to lend his support to American competitors "to once again express his gratitude for their service and his admiration for their courage and resilience".

The Telegraph reported:

'Among those who met the Prince and Mr Obama were three small children who approached the pair shyly for a photograph. Otis Harding-Withers, six, was lifted onto Prince Harry's lap after saying hello, while Jakob Israel, eight, and his seven-year-old sister Grace posed in front of Mr Obama.
Jakob and Grace are the children of Jason Israel, who has served three tours in Afghanistan with the Canadian forces and and competed in the track events after suffering an operational stress injury.
The emotional mother Amanda Israel, said she had used the moment to thank Prince Harry for setting up the Games. "I told him: thank you for giving me my husband back," she said. It was the first time we could share and say thank you to him. The fact Barack Obama was with him as well, incredible. Grace has been talking about him all week."
Heather Harding, mother of Otis, said her son has simply walked over towards the Prince just as he and Mr Obama settled into their front row bleacher seats. "Harry asked me if it was ok and put him on his lap," she said. He was as lovely as I thought he would be.'

Throughout the week, reporters continually noted how much time Harry made for everyone - especially the families of competitors.

Harry's passion for the games and the athletes was evident in each event he attended.

Cheering on the teams in the wheelchair basketball final earlier today.

Harry gave an interview to CTV News, in which he said "the legacy for me is these individuals". You can view it here.

Afterwards, Harry joined friends and families from all participating teams for a group photo.

Rebecca English reported:

"Prince Harry was hugged by a little boy on behalf of his father as he took part in an impromptu photocall with the families of Invictus Games competitors. Majka Popiel, six, ran over to the royal at the end of the event in Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto and clung to his knees on Saturday. Majka's father, Mik Popiel, has been competing in the cycling events as part of the Canadian team. The soldier, who spent 22 years in the army, suffers from PTSD and other injuries. Asked why he hugged the prince, Majka said: 'I like him and wanted to say thanks for everything he has done for my dad. I felt very proud watching him."

I think you'll agree, Invictus has been a triumph again this year.

Well done, Harry! I have no doubt Her Majesty and the entire Royal family are enormously proud of everything the Prince has accomplished.

Back to tonight, Harry closed with an inspiring speech.

'I want to start by saying thank you. Thank you to Michael Burns and his team, to all the amazing volunteers, to our friends and families, and to the people of Toronto. You have delivered the biggest Invictus Games yet, with the most incredible atmosphere, making our competitors feel like the stars they are. One week ago, I told you that you needed to be ready. But even I, could not have been ready for the scale of what we witnessed at these Games. I told you to be ready for some fierce competition. But I’m not sure any of us were ready for a group of men from Georgia - who until three years ago had never even played the game to battle all the way to gold in sitting volleyball.
I told you to be ready to see examples of determination, that would give you power in your own lives. But I’m not sure any of us were ready to see Mark Ormrod, with a medal round his neck, hoisting his son onto his shoulders, and capturing the imagination of the world. I told you to be ready to see the true meaning of teamwork. But who could have predicted how powerful it would be to see competitors from Ukraine, Denmark, Romania, and America, band together, to form Team Unconquered, and win a sitting volleyball game with people they just met. I told you to get ready to see role models that children would look up to. But who could have imagined that Randi Gavell, would compete on the track, on the court and in the pool, having battled back from emotional challenges, and while four and a half months pregnant. I think we all know who Randi’s little girl is going to look up to.
I told you to be ready to see lives change in front of your eyes. But I didn’t tell you that some of those lives, would be your own. I told you that anything is possible, if you have the will. But I didn’t tell you that when we saw triple amputee Mike Nicholson nail a 150 yard drive on the golf course, that our idea of what we thought was possible, would change forever. I told you, you would be inspired. But I didn’t say, that these games, might leave you questioning, if you are living to your own true potential. To the thousands who filled the stands this week, and the millions who watched at home, let me issue you a challenge. Don’t just move on from these games with happy memories. Instead, make an Invictus goal for yourselves. Let the examples of service and resilience that you have seen, inspire you to take action to improve something - big or small - in your life, for your family, or in your community. Let’s create a ripple effect of the Invictus spirit across our nations, that will be the real legacy of this extraordinary week.
As I did a week ago, I want to end by speaking directly to our competitors. Right now you’re on a high - at the summit of a mountain many of you thought was too high to climb. You have done it. This is the moment, right here, right now, shoulder to shoulder. You are Invictus. These Games are not about gold, silver or bronze medals. They never have been. They’re about the journey that you and your families have made to the start line. Now, going home, it might be tough, as the excitement fades, but you have faced much greater challenges before, it will be a breeze. As I have said many times, once you have served, you are always serving. On your return home, I want you to set a new Invictus goal.
Make a plan about how you are going to use the experience of this week, to help lift up all those around you. It might be something big, like starting a new project for young people. Or, it might be something small, like reconnecting with an old friend. It doesn’t matter how big or small your step is - just take it. Our world needs your dedication and passion like never before. And you never know, this may just be the missing piece of the puzzle to help you regain that satisfaction of serving others once again. And, I’d also ask for one more important favour. I bet you can all think of at least one person who would benefit from the Invictus Games, but has yet to find the motivation to make that first step.
When we gather in Sydney next year, I look forward to seeing familiar faces in competition. But, more than anything, I hope to meet those who have watched these games at home, who may still be struggling, but with your support will wear their nation’s flag on their chest once again as part of the 2018 Games. And I want to see those who have competed this year, back by their sides cheering them on, as others have done for you. The Invictus Games are not just for the already determined. These Games are for those who need it most. Please help us find them. It's gonna be Game On, Down Under. I’ll see you in Australia.'

Meghan looked chic in a tan trench coat, skinny jeans, a v neck t-shirt and grey pumps.

The eagle-eyed team at Meghan's Mirror looked through numerous possibilities before determining Meghan's draped trench is from The Line's Spring 2016 Collection - she has favoured the brand in the past.

Meghan's jeans are by one of her favourite brands Everlane. The $68 High-Rise Skinny Jeans in indigo are described as "The perfect high-rise jean with a flattering crop. Made of premium Japanese denim with just a touch of stretch, this pair is designed with a holds-you-in high rise for a sleek fit."

For The Sunday Times, the always reliable Roya Nikkhah wrote:

'The Invictus Games, which Harry considers his greatest achievement, have given him the balance of both. “They have definitely changed my life”, he said this week.
A friend of Harry’s said: “He has come good and grown up. He is the happiest, most settled and confident he’s ever been — with his position, with his work and personally. With Invictus, he’s become a bit of an icon with the military, which means everything to him — as does sharing it with someone he loves who clearly makes him very happy.”
Markle’s first official appearances by Harry’s side this week, meticulously planned by Kensington Palace, have also been a clear statement by the prince that she will be part of his future. Markle, 36, currently lives and works in Toronto, where she stars in the television drama Suits. But with an engagement announcement anticipated, it is thought she may soon quit her role and relocate to London.
The couple are expected to marry next summer, after the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s third child in the spring.'

Next year's Invictus Games in Sydney could well be Harry and Meghan's first official overseas tour as a married couple.

  3. Thanks for the quick post! Those last statements by Roya are quite bold. It's actually what I was thinking but wouldn't dare declare that. Let's hope for a summer wedding! So happy for them. And the statement about him being "settled and confident". You can see that so clearly. He is in his element. What a close resemblance to his mother in the extreme empathy and encouragement he is able to give to others. His mother made an incredible impact and it has been passed down to her children. I imagine this ability to connect so well with all walks of life will continue to be passed down to future generation. What a wonderful asset to the Royal Family! These military families need so much encouragement and I am so happy this has been created for them. God bless them all!

  5. That Doris is by Meghan's side is just the best and Meghan's BFF's Markus and Jessica are there with her also. Way cool. This definitely speaks volumes and it is all good. Jessica is Meghan's stylist and First Lady Of Canada, Sophie's stylist according to The Tig, when she still had The Tig. Jessica, Sophie and Meghan are all friends. I hope Meghan got to meet Barack Obama, Joe and Jill Biden at some point. Although Barack asking about her during the game doesn't sound like it. Megan's mom looks so cute. Up to the minute lace, with some transparency and the bell sleeves. That color looks really good on her. She's just glowing. :). I still can't believe she is in Toronto with Meghan and Harry at the Invictus games. How cool is that? And what a ceremony to honor the veterans, their families and the people that put the Invictus Games together.

    2. I think the kiss is an announcement. It's moving toward marriage! Not the announcement you were routing for though😁. It would have been fun for a proposal to happen but realistically she can't announce she is engaged until she stops Suits. Can you imagine the chaos she'd have to endure just getting to work? I think they need to wait until she's done on the show. I think they're probably secretly engaged though. We can now wait for a timely announcement. Happy that all is well! And btw, Meghan's mom is adorable. Don't know anything about her but you can tell by their countenances that she & Meghan have a good relationship. It speaks volumes that Harry would invite her. Looks like all is well & moving in the direction of marriage! Great week! Thanks so much, Charlotte! You have all the happy news to make our weekend😃

  13. Forget Meghan, Bryans Adams is there! I love him...so much. Yep, I just had a fan girl moment.

Meghan looked great. Polished and professional but not overdressed or like she was trying to 'play princess' if that makes sense. And I love the Harry is following William's example and is connecting and investing in a relationship with his potential in-laws.

I also think they are engaged. I think they took to heart advice about not rushing anything. They have been dating for over a year and if Summer 2018 is a true wedding date, that's two years, which makes for solid foundation for a relationship(and yes, for some, all you need is 2 minutes, others, 20 years isn't enough but in general, a year or two is a good foundation).

THIS IS AMAZING, UNBELIEVABLE AND JUST SIMPLY WONDERFUL!! YAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
I don´t know where to start!!
I had an absolutely HORRIBLE Sunday morning, since the temperatures have fallen, I am being FLOODED with cigarette smoke 15-50 TIMES A DAY!!! The range hood in my open kitchen is the problem - it´s sucking the air in, especially smoke. My direct neighbour in the house next to us is smoking CONSTANTLY - and he´s at home even during daytime during the week. I am currently searching FRANTICALLY for a new appartment - because I simply CAN´T do this anymore. I have even "constructed" a "make-shift" cover for the outer part of the hood at 7am this morning, so that the air from the outside can´t get into the inside, I hope it will work until the mechanic comes in two weeks... Sorry about this TOTALLY off-topic rant, but I´m just SO HAPPY to see these pictures and have SOMETHING positive in my life to rejoice about!! I´m usually not THAT "moved" by royal news, but at the moment, I literally JUMP at ANYTHING that takes my mind of this fl*****g (excuse me my French) cigarette smoke!! SO please forgive me for my rant!!
That kiss, her MOTHER being present - I mean WHAT MORE do we need????? (Ok, yes, surfer girl, A PROPOSAL AT THE CLOSING CEREMONY, OF COURSE!!) Let us forgive Harry that he didn´t want to steal the limelight from the veterans!!
What an incredible show, though. I mean, look at the pictures and you think you see the closing ceremony of the Olypmic Games. This is what Harry has achieved in SUCH A SHORT TIME!! WOW, I can only say, WOW!!!!! My mum used to tell me as a child that the dead are sitting on the clouds and looking down at us, watching... Diana must be SO PROUD of Harry, sitting on her cloud!!!
Oh, and surfer girl, you had me laughing out loud with your "lawyer" remark!! I actually had the "pleasure" to pass some legal exams during my business administration studies - it was a nightmare!! 90% of the time I was thinking "Why haven´t I gotten into trouble with the law yet - when I obviously just don´t get how it works???? The only exception was "public rights" - I scored pretty high there - a coincidence? ;-))))
Oh thank you, Meghan and Harry - and our dear Charlotte! - for giving me another opportunity to dance on my sofa, clapping my hands and cheering (without making noises, as my daughter is still fast asleep... ;-)) ), YAYYYYY!!!! I am beyond myself!!! A royal baby, a royal marriage - and HOPEFULLY a smoke-free appartment for yours truly - what a year 2018 is looking to be!!!! YAYYYY!

And now he's got Meghan at his side. These two are going to be - hopefully - a lovely force to be reckoned with in the world we so badly need.

And it reminds me so much of Diana a few years before she died, when she started diving in to some very serious issues. She said "I've got all the press following me, let's take them places where the cameras might be able to do some good" And isn't that exactly what Harry is doing?

So much was made (by critics) of Meghan's brief appearances, but I thought, people you're missing the forest for the trees! Harry had the British and global press sitting watching these games and seeing what they were all about, getting a new perspective on the fate of wounded veterans. It was the classic, you scratch mine, I'll scratch yours strategy.

From one article - yes Harry was the "glitz" that brought the attention, but the athletes were the force that held and rewarded that attention. Everyone was awed and inspired by them.

Being a modern royal isn't about turning your back on traditional events, it's about figuring out how best to champion those older events, and any newer ones you take on. Harry seems to have figured that out. I hope he continues with many causes. I'm very excited after this week.

    3. Eve, It just dawned on me when you pointed that out. Harry did not use notes or a teleprompter to give his speeches. That IS epic. THAT is straight from his heart. And, from the videos I have watched where Meghan is speaking and from reading many of her quoted comments from printed interviews, I think I detected a little of Meghan in his speech. There is no doubt in my mind that he rehearsed his speeches with her. (Some reports said she seemed to be speaking some of his speech to herself as he was speaking.) So she may have helped with the fabrication of them also. Great teamwork. Great team.
My prayers will be with you, dear Eve, that you and your daughter find the best place ever. Harry would love to know how the games inspired you. Not to be bossy. but I hope that after you have moved you will write a letter to your former building owner, letting them know why you moved. And, a letter to the mayor and city council might be a good idea also. All accompanied with a clear outline of the health hazards of secondary cigarette smoke. :) I hope your search is easy and quickly successful.X

    4. P.S. Eve. Maybe even a letter (with photos of you and your daughter as he probably has a big bulletin board of photos of thankful people started already) to Harry. :) It would warm his heart to hear how he and the games played a real part in you bettering you and your daughter's living environment and also sow a seed, into his mileu, about the predicament of second hand cigarette smoke and what a huge problem that is in your area (and throughout a lot of Europe). Someone started the process here somehow and it was probably a grassroots effort to begin with but now we have very stringent regulations about second hand cigarette smoke and about cigarette smoking in public areas in general.
(you have no doubt thought of ALL my suggestions already. lol)

    5. Harry's gift is that he is a actual speaker…not a reader. While we've had some excellent speeches delivered by the Queen, Prince Charles, Prince William and Kate, they have all been read…not spoken. Very few are able to do this. Harry ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See below and you see I had the same idea (with the letter).... so nice!! :-))) I send lots of hugs over "the pond" to you!!

I was incredibly inspired by Harry´s speech, so I´ve set myself an "Invictus goal": finding a new appartment for myself, where I can enjoy life again and, above all, be MYSELF again: a cheerful, life-loving, fun-loving, smiling-all-over-her-face, incredibly positive and joyous woman who loves "opening her windows" - literally and figuratively speaking!! Where´s a will there´s a way!
Thank you Harry, you are truly inspiring! Your country can be proud of you!

    1. Eve I'm so sorry you've had such a rough time, but I love this comment! And Harry would love it, it was the key message of the final days of the games.

The talented Chris Ship put it like this at the end of his piece:

"I’ve written how it (the games) has given purpose to lives when all purpose was lost - and helped many others climb mountains they never thought they could reach.

But there is one more achievement.

The power of TV means the images from the Invictus Games are breaking down barriers and smashing prejudices about the injured and the disabled.

Once you see what can be achieved against these sorts of odds, you suddenly look at your own life - and wonder why you can't take it that little bit further yourself.

If these men and women can, we all can."

So best of luck to you Eve! I know you can do it!
      X

    2. I think that is a great idea. I was thinking what goal I could set for myself.

I'm just back after a weekend dog sitting so my friend could go to a family wedding. She smokes, although not in the house thank god. Her husband doesn't smoke. But she does smoke occasionally in her car. She probably thinks it's pristine, but it isn't. It's not that bad, but you can tell! I feel for you with chimneys for neighbors, Eve.

  28. What an inspirational speech, Prince Harry! You make your nation proud! As an American, my only regret was that the games were not televised here in the US. Shame on you ESPN and other networks. These warriors deserve our attention & support! Maybe we need to start a grass roots campaign to get the 2018 games shown in the US - at least some highlights??

As for the Meghan sighting, they look so very happy. Harry seems in a really good place in his life and I hope has found a partner that will share in his goals and be willing to share the fishbowl existence too. I wish you all the best!!

Thank you Charlotte for your hard work. Though I do not comment often, I thoroughly enjoy your blogs and the classiness in which they are written. Keep up the good work!!

    A few things here:

    1) The cynicism of people is always surprising to me. The talk about Meghan's appearance being a "distraction" to the games is selfish and ungrateful. Without Prince Harry, there would be no Invictus Games. None. This type of person will never be satisfied, no matter what they are given, therefore for me, their perspective means NOTHING. The gentleman who was interviewed saying that Prince Harry can interrupt him anytime "preferably with " his girlfriend was very sweet and probably shared the sentiment with many.

    2) The story about the silver medalist with no legs and one arm is JUST INSPIRING to say the very least. What a show of the human spirit to carry on.

    3) There is someone close to me who has shared stories of bringing home soldiers on a plane. Many young men with many limbs missing. Many who he is just trying to get home to be able to die surrounded by their families in their own country. This doesn't account for the many who suffer the horrors of their minds. The death, loss and blood they have seen. For these stories, a thank you beyond thank you to Prince Harry. He has given some of these men and women a reason to go on, a reason to hope, a reason for being and something to look forward to.

    1. I can see why people would say Meghan being there was a distraction. The only thing I heard about that event was Meghan and Harry and their interactions.

BUT I think that was very calculated. Meghan came(early in the games), she saw, she was seen, and she conquered. Then she strategically stayed out of sight for the rest of the games which allowed the focus to remain on the athletes and their stories and triumphs. Her appearance laid to rest any potential 'she isn't there, they are breaking up rumors', her ease and comfort showed that her time in the spotlight as an actress will be an asset to her transition into the RF, and then she stepped back and understood that is what needed to happen to make the event shine.

All in all, people who say she was a distraction can suck it.

      Delete
    2. I also think that Meghan is very smart and allowed just enough exposure of herself so that the games received more coverage. It's never about her and she doesn't overdress---she supports, like Obama and the Bidens did. And like Springsteen and Clarkson. I'm so glad Harry has someone who is not running scared of the media and cameras. I just think she's terrific and I hope we see a ring and wedding plans before the new year. Maybe her mother was there to help plan a wedding? They need to get going while his grandparents are healthy and so they can have kids. :)

And surfer girl: Believe me, I´ve already written that letter to my landlord - ready to accompany my notice once I´ve found my new home. He won´t be happy with those smokers as he´s got to find new tenants (and pay for the company doing the search for him), plus, he really likes us...

  33. I read somewhere (I've been looking for the article) that said that Kensington Palace had been a part of planning Meghan's visits to the Invictus games. That's significant and I can't believe I didn't make a note as to what article that was. Did anyone else read that?
Makes sense when you think about it. Harry isn't going to plan every detail himself. He has a secretary at Kensington Palace, right? He would have to have security choreographed. It was an official event.
Still, Kensington Palace involvement is no small potatoes.

    1. yes, is private secretary organised the seats for the tennis match, she was seen arranging it just before they arrived, that is how the press know she would arrive with Harry

Apparently they do try to coordinate colors as much as possible for photo ops. (and bouquet colors also) Thankfully. Nice how she and Sophie purposefully decided to use Soohie's wardrobe to champion Canadian designers, new and old.

My friends! Thank you so much again for you all showing me support - it means the world to me... The two viewings today were rather positive (fresh air - people greeting you really friendly out of their windows while you are just passing by - was I in "dreamland"?...) They both have their pros and cons, but I´ve found a third one which also looks quite promising... So, either way, something will happen - and soon, I feel it.... And fresh air won´t be a problem anymore, that one is certain...
How sad that once again, we have to listen to bad news.. Another senseless killing of totally innocent people who were just enjoying themselves... I am shocked and horrified... My thoughts and prayers go out to Las Vegas, to all the people affected by this horrible attack...

  42. Reading your comments about the Las Vegas shooting, just to reply from the US, thank you but the US has even bigger problems, like millions of US citizens trying to stay alive in Puerto Rico while the president dedicates a golf trophy to them, 10 million low-income children whose health care program (CHIP) has just been allowed to time out by Congress, and people running for Congress who "used" to belong to the KKK. I promise to stay on subject from now on,but it's been a hard day listening to news report after news report about Las Vegas and nothing about the larger crises. Thanks. :)

Allison, I understand your feelings and feel with you.... what you are describing (and what I read during my daily "Washington Post" and "New York Times" - "Fix") is indeed appalling.. As much as I was "allowed" to "go off subject" by mentioning Las Vegas, your comments are equally welcomed and "allowed". Thank you for your valid input, honestly, it´s what makes this blog so interesting (and over at the Duchess Kate blog). It IS the direct input of people who are actually living "there" (wherever and whatever we are talking about) or living "it" that makes all the difference!! So THANK YOU!! Hugs from Germany!
