Meghan's Club Monaco Christmas Day Dress & New Year Resolutions

Since Meghan's Christmas Day appearance, a number of you have been in touch asking if it's possible the dress she wore underneath her Sentaler coat could be identified. We saw a peek of the burgundy velvet piece, but without some indication of the neckline, it looked like we would have to wait until Meghan gave it another outing to know.

Luckily, the brand who designed the piece - Club Monaco - confirmed on their Instagram page, it is in fact their Tay Dress. Note, the distinctive wrap detail at the bottom. Given the interest in the piece, perhaps they'll rename it The Meghan? :)

The velvet effect dress comes in a rich jewel-toned burgundy with tiered, ruffled short sleeves and an effortless wrap design. The colour was perfect for the festive season. The dress is available at Club Monaco where it is reduced from $298 to $239. It's also widely available at ShopBop, Neiman Marcus and Zalando.

Club Monaco received confirmation from Meghan's stylist Jessica Mulroney.

When Meghan and Harry joined the Queen in mid December at Windsor for the Royal Household Christmas Party it was reported by the Mail Online she wore a burgundy lace dress. Meanwhile, Hello! wrote she selected a "festive red dress" for the night. I suspect it's quite possible she may have worn the Club Monaco dress on that occasion too.

Meghan has long been a fan of the popular brand which was launched in Canada in 1985. The first store in Toronto still exists today. Today, the high-end casual clothing retailer is owned by Polo Ralph Lauren with 140 locations worldwide. We saw Meghan in their Sinthea dress in June for a special reading of the pilot episode of Suits at the ATX Festival.

It's a beautiful dress!

************

An interesting and timely Meghan story doing the rounds today involves a blog post she wrote on The Tig last year sharing her New Year resolutions. The Telegraph reports:

'Prince Harry's fiancee wrote on her blog last year that she always has the same resolutions. The future duchess, who spent Christmas with the royals for the first time this year, admitted that she swears when she is "overworked or feeling mighty cheeky after a couple of drinks".
Ms Markle, 36, said she chews her nails when she is stressed, especially on turbulent flights. She revealed that every year she makes the same resolutions to cut out such "unladylike" behaviour. Writing on her candid personal blog on January 1, 2016, she explained: "Stop biting my nails. Stop swearing. Re-learn French. "These make my New Year's resolution list nearly (AKA actually every) single year. The swearing comes in lulls triggered by being overworked or feeling mighty cheeky after a couple drinks. And when it comes to the biting of the nails - well, it still happens with a turbulent flight or a stressful day. It's unladylike. But then again, so is the swearing. Dammit."

Meghan vowed to "leave room for magic" (We can safely say that hope came to fruition):

'She wrote: "For this new year, the only thing I aim to do is to approach life playfully. To laugh and enjoy, to keep my standards high but my level of self-acceptance higher.
"My New Year's resolution is to leave room for magic. To make my plans, and be okay if they sometimes break. To set my goals, but to be open to change.
"To let the magic know that there is an open door policy with me in 2016 and that it is always welcome to join the party.
"I invite you to do the same. Have a beautiful, blissful, and incredibly magical 2016. So grateful to be with you on the ride."

Seven months after writing the post, Meghan met Harry on a blind date.

With that, I want to wish you a Happy New Year. May 2018 bring all you hope for and more!

  1. Wow! Could not love that Club Monaco dress more. The beautiful rich color and fabric, the sophisticated midi-length, and the fun ruffled sleeve! Elegant and festive. I wonder if she tailored it at all to be not such a deep v neck, though?

Meghan is certainly one to watch on the style front. It’ll be so interesting to see how her “true” royal wardrobe evolves, as Kate’s has done.

  4. It actually does not look like that dress to me. Her hem is a gentle ark, I do not think it is the Club dress. The Club Monaco is a right angle at the hem not two arks on each side of the slit as hers appears to be.

    4. Yes, the dress has an arc. I followed the “Tay dress” link in Charlotte’s article. The photo there does indeed show the arc. Not sure why it doesn’t show on this model. My question is how did she put the coat on with those ruffle-y sleeves. Sure, the Sentaler sleeves look loose on her, but still, velvet with a ruffle — wonder if it was uncomfortable.

  9. Also I will say the abuse which is being inflicted on Meghan Markle is appalling, tragic, uncalled for (as any form of abuse is), and just horrific. Especially as she is being used like a jolly pawn and scapegoat (and money machine and royal accessory if they had their way) by her half-siblings, and half-sister in particular - very un-family like, considering 'family' has been the most common word used around the globe for past few days in relation to MM. No fault of PH who just spoke his and Meghan's truth which everyone is entitled to regardless of status and background - just people misunderstanding and grasping at anything. Don't get me started on the non-stop racism. Your website is a lovely place of zen and peace, and just positivity and light. Hope my comment doesn't spoil this post for anyone, but had to say it. I saw some other pictures of the dress on a different blog, but yours was the only ones that showed the true beauty of the dress. Now I can see why she chose it. I had also read 2 versions of Meghan's resolutions elsewhere, but you were the first to include the year. Knowing it is from 2016.and not 2017, says to me that she must have been as surprised as we were as the magic started unfolding in her life. Hoping for magic in all our lives in the Jew Year!!

This is an odd observation, but has anyone noticed that lately when Harry is pictured with Meghan, he has his right hand tucked under the lapel of his jacket? Did he have this habit before? Is it some sort of hand signal or am I reading too much into conspiracy theories? (cue Twighlight Zone theme music).

This is such a nice blog where rational people can come and have a good discussion without all the hate. 2018 will be big for us fans can’t wait to see the tiara and dress she wears. I predict Harry will tear up when he see her.

With media trying to tear her down and “family” selling her out I’m glad Harry supports her and has her back. Even for the strongest people that can be tough. Of course she also has the support of her mother and close friends.

    1. Monica, you are the first person to comment about the velvet texture. Like you, I appreciate the colour and style of the dress but not the quality of the velvet. If one sews, which I do, in fabric stores we find, that there are several grades of velvet. Silk velvet is very expensive. Cotton velvet is not as expensive, but it is not as luxurious. A decent velvet is a silk/rayon blend. Then there are 100% synthetic velvets…polyester, nylon or viscose. This dress looks to be made from a synthetic. That could be why the dress on the model is not hanging very well and in my opinion looks inexpensive. With velvet you truly do get what you pay for. Club Monaco is not in the same league as designer dresses we usually see on celebrities.

    2. Laura.😊 Who knew velvet was so complex, lol? Not me. Thank you for the info. I love velvet so I loved learning about it. Our schools used to have Home Economics classes where we were taught
sewing and cooking/nutrition. I loved those classes. Loved them. I have heard that they have omitted such things recently from some school curriculums.
Where does on find quality fabric these days Laura? I would love to know. :) I just might get creative and start sewing again. I really enjoyed it before. (I used to loan my portable sewing machine out to girls in my dorm when I was in college. That silly thing would work perfectly for everyone but me, lol.)
The dress on the model does look a little pathetic. Less than perky for sure. Not to worry. Harry's princess will no doubt be royally educated about velvet sooner than later and will be wearing better (or even silk) velvet before you know it. :)

    3. Super Girl…I wrote a long reply answering some of your questions. I hit publish but that led me to a Gmail sign in. So I am not sure if my comment will be published. I'll check back and if it isn't I will try to repost.

    4. Okay, Surfer Girl the reply did not post, so I am trying again. I too enjoyed Home Economics classes, that are no longer part of the school's curriculum. It was good to learn about cooking and nutrition, as well as how to sew. Perhaps this course was dropped due to the women's movement feeling that girls should not be forced to learn how to cook and how to sew. I think these are skills both men and women need.

I only took Home Ec. from Grades 6–8, but in those three years, I we sewed placemats, then an apron, followed by a blouse, a skirt and a dress.

You ask where one can buy quality fabric. I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. We have a street called Ottawa St. It has at least a dozen fabric shops. The same street also has stores that sell sewing machines, hat-making supplies, sewing notions, quilting supplies, unholstering and drapery materials. Bus loads of tourists visit this street to shop. For me this street has always been there and I take it for granted. You can purchase fabrics online, but then you would not be able to feel the texture, check for stretching or wrinkling and be sure about the quality.

If you ever come to Canada, give me a shout. I will be happy to take you to Ottawa St.

You imagine she put the slouchy boots on with the dress only for the walk to church? Odd combination of color, texture, and vibe together otherwise. I thought her clothes overpowered her when she was outside to the point that I looked up her height, thinking she must be petite. She is 5'7" ! I think all the colors she wore that day were not the most flattering. She could wear a much different palette, even the neutrals, that would enhance her considerable natural beauty and still always be elegantly, simply dressed for her job.

The deep V in the dress is also not church appropriate for a member of the royal family, but I imagine she kept her coat on in the old church. It's also hard to picture playing with children comfortably in it. I like the dress as it is styled and appreciate the price.

Harry's comments about her family, no matter how he meant them were extremely unkind and undiplomatic. I think ONLY of his bride's mother. Ouch. Secondly, it also degrades his wife to be. I imagine he thinks he is rescuing her? haha. In contrast, I think William was thought to believe that his wife's family depicted the home he never had, do I remember correctly? Context is everything I suppose.

Lovely work Charlotte. Happy New Year and thanks for helping me learn so much about the UK.

    1. I agree that the clothes are not flattering her at all. I hope she gets rid of Jessica as her stylist.

As for Harry's comments, I think they were designed to put the extended family members in their place. They probably even spoke with Meghan's mother right afterwards to clarify what Harry said.

      Delete
    2. "Family I never had" is actually a common expression at least in America. And it's not used to demean one family, but rather to recognize differences. I've heard people with great relationships with their own family use the expression. When Meghan was asked about her family in the engagement interview she immediately defined "family" as her parents and close friends. When Meghan thinks about family that's who she thinks about, and that's very different from over 20 people from 4 generations gathering under one roof. If all we knew about Meghan's family came from her own words then I don't think anyone would have seen anything negative in Harry's words because Meghan only talks positively about both of her parents.

      Delete
    3. Agree on the look.

      I doubt she is 5.7.
Look at the picture with the cast...she looks quite short.

      Camilla

      Delete
    4. I agree with anon 13:40. Family must mean 'extended family' here. In dutch we have 2 words: one for parents + siblings and one for including grandparents uncles etc

      Delete
    5. I agree on the height and also on the comment on family. She looks to me around 5.5 or 5.6". People who have met Kate have commented that she is not more than 5 ft and 7". So I would guess around 5.5.

"Family she never had" to me meant that she never had huge multigenerational get-togethers that the royal family institutes. I didn't interpret it as negative at all or a put-down of her parents or mother. Even if one does have large families it is a rare holiday when everyone can be under the same roof all at the same time. For instance, one year it will be a sibling going off on vacation or an uncle going off to the in-laws or whatever. So even if Meghan did actually have a large non-toxic family (which I don't believe she did - I think that her extended family is quite problematic), the statement could be true.

  20. The dress is pretty but have to agree an odd combo with those boots. The colors do not seem like a good combination nor does the slouchy nature of the boots with the relaxed long length of the dress seem like a good thing. Maybe she had a different pair of shoes at the Sandringham that she changed in and out of before going to and returning from Church.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It is said that several changes of clothing are required on Christmas Day at Sandringham. Surely it makes sense to wear a beautiful dress for the luncheon underneath a warm coat for church. In Meghan’s case, she would only need to take off her ginger colored hat, coat, and boots, and slip into a nice pair of pumps to be elegantly dressed, in the beautiful burgundy velvet with diamond earrings, for the Queen’s lunch. My sense is that HM is strict about lunch starting on time, so that it does not infringe on her speech.

I like Meghan’s mention of a wish to be ladylike, when she discussed New Year’s resolutions. I had been thinking that word when I saw her shaking hands with her right glove off, and walking with her left hand holding Harry’s arm. Such customs are perhaps lost on younger generations, but I always feel that one can be feminist and still be ladylike, even given the odd swear word. Meghan evidently agrees.

  23. I doubt she would have used the same dress twice...and they wouldn.t have reported 'lace dress', there could have been no mistaking this dress for a lace dress.

Also... I think Meghan is a gem of a beauty.. but short sleeves with these slouchy boots, and red velvet with beige brown.. I don.t think I like or understand her style choices.

Plus, some discussed whether she were tall or not. Ftom the picture with the cast I think it.s uite evident she.s pretty petite, not just frame-wise but also height-wise.

My guess is that Megan wore different shoes with her velvet dress in the house - just like she didn't keep her hat on.

I also don't think Megan is 5' 7" - maybe with her heels on. I think she appears to be petite. Maybe 5' 5"?

  24. First I wanted to wish everyone a very Happy New Year! We still have quite awhile to go here on the east coast of the US. I do love Meghan’s resolution from last year’s blog - I actually keep my resolution pretty similar from year to year as she did. I’d like to share mine with you, I share it on my fb each year to hold myself accountable from year to year.

May 2018 be the best year yet!

My resolution: “New Year, New You" is not a theory I subscribe to. I look at New Year's as a time to restart and refresh, I am constantly learning and growing, New Year's is an opportunity to hit reset.

Look at your life, what is or isn't working, people who build you up and people who try to tear you down, the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly - choose your own adventure and those you want along for the ride.

Go into the new year with plans and ideas to continue building YOU. There is only one YOU and the world would be a darker place without YOU. Today is a continuation of the story of your life, don't let the chapter end on a cliffhanger, continue the story and chose the path that will lead you to happiness and peace.”

  27. I know that as this is your blog, you decide what is posted and what is not, and that you have taken the commendable decision to not post the racism and abuse that is directed at Meghan Markle. But I noticed you did not post my comment about how most of the abuse comes from Trump supporters.

From looking at the abusive tweets on Twitter and the Daily Mail comments, 99 times out of 100, the people doing the abusing are Trump supporters who have taken issue with Meghan because of her comments criticising Trump when he made the “grab them by the pussy” comment that was secretly taped. She called him misogynist, which we all know he is along with being a white supremacist, anti-gay, anti-trans, racist. His supporters swarm on the internet making up conspiracy theories about anyone who opposes him, targeting them with abuse and bizarre accusations. Recently Chrissy Teigan was targeted by one of these crazy Trump supporters who accused her of running a paedophile ring – she has since locked her account. This is what is happening to Meghan – they call her a “globalist” leftie, liberal, been married twice not once, libtard, pro-Obama (which seems to be one of the greatest crimes of all), and the list goes on.

This is just one of 1000s of tweets I have seen under any tweet by @KensingtonRoyal, which illustrates what I am saying : https://twitter.com/Fifi_Borgia/status/947554133447462912

By not acknowledging what is the main force driving this abuse, which will continue indefinitely throughout Meghan’s entire life, you are omitting a major element in Meghan’s story. I know how appalled you are by the negativity and hate directed towards Meghan, hence your opinion pieces addressing it, so I would appreciate it if you read my comment and thought about what I have to say. I just fear that what could and should be a beautiful fairytale story, is being marred by racists and insane right wingers who will never stop their hate campaign. Meghan will have to endure something that no other royal has had to endure and I don’t know where it will end because these people are relentless and dangerous.

Apart from that, thanks for a wonderful blog which I love reading for the depth of details and obvious warmth and admiration you have for Meghan, which she fully deserves.

I genuinely wish you a Happy New Year!

    1. Hello Grenada,

Thank you for your comment. I will publish a 'Comment Guide' for this blog at some point shortly. I think it's important to keep politics off the blog and it will be part of the policy moving forward. It would add nothing but ugliness to the conversation and take conversation on a divisive off-topic road. I would rather keep the focus on Meghan and Harry. I hope you understand.

    2. I've added this underneath the comments to avoid confusion moving forward.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)

That being said, the few references that have been made to US politics have been of the same opinion as Grenada, though not as strongly worded. My impression is that the posters are all nice persons, far removed from what Grenada describes. On the other hand, I am not American, have never been in the US nor plan to be, my origins ( how I dislike the word race) are quite as mixed as those of Meghan and I have 3 nationalities. And I don't think Meghan is perfect. I don't feel welcome to say so here. I understand it is for the sake of keeping the blog a nice place. But it is a stretch to believe everyone that utters a critic does so because of US politics.

    7. 😊 Amen, H. I detest racism. And except for Grenada's comments about racism, I haven't found it here either.

    8. H: thank you for that comment. You are absolutely right. Not everything or everyone is brushed by a broad stroke. This is one of the reasons why things are so divided, if one doesn't agree with someone you are labeled. No happy medium anymore. It's all or nothing. Very sad!

  28. My New Year's resolution is to never read anything else from MM's family! Or about her dogs or her former best friends. Or from psychics who say the marriage is doomed. Bit I think the "news" will calm down and we will have enough positive stories to push the bad ones into the past.

There is one image circulating of MM's red/burgundy/cherry/purple dress that shows a lot of cleavage; I doubt she wore it that way. First, she is not voluptuous, and, second, she has more sense. She does seem small but she is reported to be 5' 7" and she seems about 2 inches shorter than Kate, although it's hard to tell.

I hope she and Harry visited her mom and perhaps other friends and had a great time!

I loved Meghan's whole look on Christmas day. Comments on her boots being too slouchy: I honestly think, as one reader put it, she has the best legs in the world! I think her ankles are so petite that she has a hard time with boots in general. I have never seen a pair on her that doesn't look "slouchy". Why should a girl ditch boots because her ankles are too pretty?
In general, I think Meghan has a wonderful eye for fashion (or her stylist does) and I always enjoy seeing what she wears.

    1. Tammy, I am cursed with the same problem. Small (the doctor once said dainty) calves and ankles. I hate them. But I laughed out loud at you calling them"pretty". It gave me a different perspective from the frustration I usually feel when buying boots. I cannot buy like everyone else, because they slouch too much. So, I am severely limited in the style I can buy (only those with laces, so that I can tighten them), or I search specifically for boots with a smaller than usual calf width. It takes so much effort. But, I guess Meghan now has the staff support to do that.

    2. I’m jealous! I’m the opposite problem / my calf width is larger than most boots so I either have to spend more $ on the extended calf boots or just wear booties.

I agree Meghan has great legs which is one of the reasons I don’t like the slouchy boots - it doesn’t show them off. If they were my legs, I’d be showing off my legs every chance I got.

    3. Her calves are extremely skinny, and most people don't consider that very skinny calves represent great legs. They cause problems with boots, because you can never find any that really fit snugly. Slouchy boots are "in" at the moment, but Miss Markle want to consider having some boots custom-made for her.

    4. I've seen some remarks that the Club Monaco dress has too low a neckline for daytime wear, and in some photos on a model, it does. However, others show that it can be wrapped so that the neckline is perfectly appropriate for daytime wear. In addition, I own wrap dresses that I think are cut a little too low for wearing in the daytime, and I just wear a plain camisole in a coordinating color under them.
