Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Release Official Photos to Mark Their Engagement

A Christmas surprise for royalists! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle released three beautiful photos to mark their engagement.

The photos were taken earlier this week at Frogmore House by renowned fashion photographer Alexi Lubomirski. The photos are absolutely gorgeous. The black and white image above displays a romantic moment as Harry wraps Meghan in his coat and she touches his cheek. The photographer perfectly captured a couple in love. This photo shot on the steps outside, shows the couple holding hands with Meghan's engagement ring taking centre stage.

A couple of hours after the release of the first two photos, Kensington Palace tweeted an unexpected third as a thank you. "Thank you so much for all of the wonderful comments following the release of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle's engagement photographs. The couple are so grateful for the warm and generous messages they have received during such a happy time in their lives. As a way to say thank you, they have decided to share this candid photograph from the day of their portrait sittings directly with all of you."

The Telegraph reports:

'The photographs were taken this week by Polish photographer Alexi Lubomirski, known for his work in fashion and celebrity and formally known as His Serene Highness Prince Alexi Lubomirski after inheriting a title from his father.
Lubomirski said: "It was an incredible honour to be asked to document this wonderful event, but also a great privilege to be invited to share and be a witness to this young couple’s love for one another. I cannot help but smile when I look at the photos that we took of them, such was their happiness together." He added: "A huge thank you to His Royal Highness Prince Harry and Ms Markle, for allowing me to take their official engagement portraits."
Lubomirski appears to have flown to the UK especially for the assignment, travelling to London on December 15th and tweeting from Heathrow Airport on the 18th to celebrate the "last job of the year". A former assistant of Mario Testino, his CV boasts photo shoots with Beyoncé, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Jennifer Lopez, Selma Hayek, Katy Perry, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Scarlett Johansson.
Born in England, he moved to Botswana at the age of eight. The Prince and Ms Markle have spent significant time in the country over their relationship, including a camping trip on their third date.'

The fact Alexi Lubomirski grew up in Botswana was obviously a factor in Harry and Meghan's decision to commission him. Botswana holds a very special place for them as a couple. It shows the level of detail and thought that went into the photoshoot. Below, the photographer with Julia Roberts after a shoot last month.

Alexi recently shot Angelina Jolie and Claire Danes.

Frogmore House is a 17th century English country house, which is located within the grounds of the Home Park, Windsor, Berkshire. Half a mile south of Windsor Castle, Frogmore was let to a number of tenants until the late 18th century, when it was used intermittently as a residence for several members of the royal family. The house is currently uninhabited, but it is used by the royal family to host both private and official events. In recent times, the house was notably used as the venue for the Queen's grandson Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly's wedding reception in 2008.

More from Windsor.gov.uk:

'Set amidst the extensive Home Park of Windsor Castle, Frogmore House is surrounded by fine and picturesque gardens. The house dates from the 1680s and was purchased for Queen Charlotte in 1792.  Here the Queen was able to indulge her love of botany and laid out the garden with many rare and unusual plants.
At one time the house was the home of Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent. After her death, her son-in-law, Prince Albert, commissioned the building of an elegant mausoleum to hold her remains.  Queen Victoria was particularly fond of Frogmore's peaceful ambience and it became her favourite retreat.
Victoria and Albert's love of Frogmore lead them to break with tradition and build themselves a much larger and grander mausoleum for themselves.'

A peek inside Frogmore.

Shortly after their engagement, Kensington Palace said Windsor is "a very special place for both Harry and Meghan". They will hold their wedding at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on 19 May. The choice of Frogmore House as the backdrop for the official engagement photos again demonstrates their affection for Windsor. If the title didn't hold such a troubled history; the Duke and Duchess of Windsor would have have been ideal for the couple.

Royal reporter Emily Nash suggests they may have spent time at Frogmore in the earlier months of their relationship away from the public eye.

The Mail reports it is being considered as a possible venue for the wedding reception:

'It has also been tipped privately as a possible venue for Harry and Meghan's own bash. It may explain why Meghan was seen in deep conversation with Mr Phillips at the Queen's Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace yesterday.'

Meghan wore a semi-sheer Ralph & Russo gown with gold feather detailing and a silk organza skirt, hand appliquéd with silk tulle ruffles from the Autumn/Winter 2016/2017 Collection. The Mail reports the couture gown was £56,000. Kensington Palace confirmed the piece was "privately purchased". Reporter Jack Rosyton said "I'm told Meghan didn't have to pay the full £56K". The British luxury goods company and haute couture fashion house is adored by royalty and celebrities all over the world. I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear they are in contention to design Meghan's wedding dress.

In the black and white photo, Prince Harry wore a Burberry coat and Meghan chose a cream sweater by Victoria Beckham. There have been a number of reports suggesting Meghan and Victoria have become close friends.

It looks like Meghan wore the Cashmere Sweater (with thanks to innominate). Made in the UK, it is described as "Embroidered initials leave Victoria Beckham's signature mark on an otherwise classic crewneck sweater in sumptuously soft cashmere."

I simply adore the photos. What do you think of them?

  1. Gorgeous and smoulderingly hot. They both look amazing, deeply in love, and connected. I also love how the photos are not heavily photoshopped. Freckles and smiley-eye crinkles - I love it!!

Overall, I just love everything about them (except Harry's slightly smooshed eye in the seated one, lol). I can't wait to see these two out working together - gazing at each other with such love in their eyes - for years to come!!

So excited and happy we didn't have to wait for 2018 for these photos. And, now...just a couple more days before Christmas!!

    1. inthekitchen, I'm glad we didn't have to wait too long for these pics, either! What a lovely Xmas gift for us :) I love your comment about the eye crinkles & freckles showing...they really are beautiful photos that Harry & Meghan can treasure for the rest of their lives together.

  2. Soooo, the photos were taken at Frogmore House at Windsor Castle. Is anyone living there currently?? Do we think this will be a home for Harry and Meghan, when they move out of NottCott? I'm starting to think so (assuming no one else is living there)!!

I'm dying to know more about the couple's connection to Windsor Castle that they alluded to in the announcement about the wedding location. I wonder if this has been their bolthole during the budding relationship and so it would be much more meaningful for them to live at Windsor rather than stay in London. It's only about 90 minutes away, right? So easy for them to get to London when needed.

    2. Oh you read my mind inthekitchen!! I was just thinking that perhaps H&M might become Frogmore's next tenants!! It looks like a beautiful house and obviously now holds a very special place in their hearts.

    3. I am wondering the same thing if they will live at Frogmore.

    4. Love your "hot" description inthekitchen ;)

You know, I'd usually be the first one to say (and think I have) "oh that title has too much baggage" but you know what, who cares! Honestly I'm wondering if it's time to banish the cobwebs on some of these things and reclaim the titles, stop being afraid of the past, go boldly into the future :)

Now Windsor is fairly recent, relatively speaking, but still, go for it! They can get past the first round of horror articles in the tabloids (let's face it they've seen worse already) I'm in a, "throw caution to the wind" mood today!

So while we're at it, Clarence House should announce that Camilla will be known as Princess of Wales starting in January as well... ;)
      (Couldn't resist bluhare!)

    5. Count me in to this line of thinking! Pretty ideal it sounds like. Oh, but to have a spare Grand House just lying around empty...

Would this qualify as a gift to the couple much like Anmer was to W&C?

      Delete
    6. I'd be fine if Camilla was known as Princess of Wales. I mean, she is the princess of Wales but just doesn't call herself that. I'd be fine with D/D of Windsor too. I agree with you; make some good history!

And Mr. bluhare used to look at me like Harry looks at Meghan. Sigh . . . .

      Delete
    7. I so agree with you on the title, Claudia.

And, me thinketh that that is why the Palace added that Windsor is very special to them having spent obviously considerable amount of time there already. They were, not just giving a reason for the choice of wedding venue, (no need to explain that actually) but they were, in my opinion, paving the way perhaps for the titles of Duke and Duchess of Windsor to be rectified and revitalized by a popular and already beloved American divorcee. People from the 40's on wouldn't have been so impacted by that 30's scandal anyway, right? They had a war to fight and win and countries to rebuild.

I think Meghan is very much aware of the titles available and Duchess of Windsor would be her dream come true since she seemingly already has an deep affinity for the place. With her personality she'll seem like the only Duchess of Windsor ever. lol And if Alice Kepler's great granddaughter can become the Queen (consort) of England, who is to say that a new day can't dawn on the title of Duchess of (beautiful) Windsor as well.
      Just my opinion. :)

    8. bluhare. maybe we just have to perfect our "Meghan gaze". It makes Harry melt. lol 😉

    9. I'd be all for living at Windsor and having the title. It probably an important title in the family and to have it be bestowed on Harry and Meghan would be a way to make a clean break for the past.

Although, I'm not convinced the Queen is ready to break away with all the memories it holds for her parents. But if she does, I will be pleasantly surprised and happy to support. Imagine the D/D of Windsor actually living in Windsor.

Do you all think Harry would be willing to leave KP behind?

      Delete
    10. Count me in Claudia. Time to reclaim those titles for a new generation. Love the idea.

      Delete
    11. I understand the hesitation to use the Windsor titles, but on the flip side, Edward & Wallis do represent an intense & enduring love story--that love rather than the "institution" or duty, won the day for the king. I would think that is a positive rather than a negative connotation w/ those titles, if you see what I mean.

      Delete
    12. Julie. Call me an optimist but I think it would not be out of the realm of possibility for them to have both and also a Cotswold country home. Do you know how many homes Charles has? (lots) :)
Harry and Meghan may get William and Kate's Kensington apartment if William and Kate do the Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle thing like the Queen does. And then there's the question of who in the future will use Clarence House. Harry and Meghan have royal options. :)

      Delete
    13. I have a feeling that Charles and Camilla would not relish hearing daily reminders of Edward VIII and WWS-the former Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Too many parallels and associations with memories best left in the past.
I think both HM and Charles will be long gone before that title is resurrected. I'm not so sure Anne and some of the cousins would go with a new Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
I think the title of Earl and Countess is more likely with a future Dukedom possible, as is rumored with Edward. ( I am thinking Duke of York) After all, Harry is still a Prince and Meghan will be Princess Harry. That much is sure.

      Delete
    14. Wow....I just read about Wallis - never fully knowing the whole story. Truly incredible story. Whew! It would be good if those titles were reclaimed.

      Delete
    15. I feel like there is just no way the queen would be ready to re-use that title. Especially since the bride would be another divorced American. Maybe it can go to George on his wedding day. To me, that's about how far away I think the awarding of the new Duke of Windsor title will be. Basically, IMO, QEII, Charles, and (probably) all of the rest of her children deceased before it's re-created for someone new.

But, housing-wise, I do think it'd be lovely if they live at Frogmore House at Windsor since they've spent so much time there. In London, I'm thinking the Kents - after the Christmas luncheon jewelry incident - should be kicked out of their KP apartments and Harry and Meghan can have those apartments for their city-base.

And finally, even though I really don't think they need 3 houses and it'd be a bit excessive, I also am really hoping they purchased Luckington Court when it was removed from the market right before (or after??) the engagement announcement. I do think Harry and Meghan should outright own their own property so they are not completely dependent on whomever the current monarch is. This way they can have property to leave to their own children. How sweet and modern would it be if the two of them jointly purchased Luckington Court?

If the two of them owned Luckington Court outright then Doria would also have a UK-base for visiting her daughter (and future grandchildren) and no one can complain she's using tax-payer resources by staying on crown-owned property.

  4. Alexi Lubomirski, you are A GENIUS.
I´ve seen many, many of his photos published in US Vogue et al. But this....
Harry´s expression in the second photo.... I got tears in my eyes... This is a man who knows how lucky he is...and at the same time is constantly asking himself: Do you know HOW LUCKY YOU ARE? He knows how precious it is to have found "THE ONE"...
And the first photo just says: PURE BLISS.
I wish those two the very, very best for their life together... I hope they will have a look at these photos every time they hit a rough spot in their journey together and remind each other: THAT´s who we are and THAT´s what we are together... Let´s not jeopardize it with some stupid argument... It´s too precious....
Thank you, Charlotte, thank you Alexi Lubomirski, thank you, Meghan and Harry! You just reminded me on a very rough day that "Love conquers all"..... God bless you!

  5. What an intimate picture. I feel almost like I'm snooping! They are so obviously in love. I hope they have many happy years together.

I'm not a fan of the sheer dress. The sheerness is distracting me from the purpose of the photo. To me, she also looks overdresses compared to Harry. Maybe they forgot to run their outfits by each other in advance? :P

    1. I love the dress, especially the bodice, it suits her; but I agree it's way over the top with Harry's casual attire.
Unfortunately I am reminded of a line from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" : "You Americans. Always overdressing for the wrong occasions.
Still love the photos and think they are the most adorable couple. Another way to look at it is: since she is casually attired in the black and white photo, it's Harry's fault for refusing to change into the evening suit she brought along ;-)

      Delete
    2. Anon 13:32. Agree that the dress seems a mismatch with Harry's suit and for me it actually ends up being the focus not the couple so I find I keep thinking it is an ad for the gown not an engagement photo. Both are gorgeous gorgeous photos and I love both of them but would have preferred Meghan in a less "luxe" dress.

      Delete
    3. I'm not American but perhaps equally unfortunately, one could also say, you toff Brits. Always looking down your noses and sniffing at anyone else's way of doing things. Why not go down in the history books in a dress that makes you feel amazing?

In addition to the previous comments on Windsor as a Dukedom for Harry, if anyone could give that tainted title a makeover it's these two. I think it's a brilliant idea and I hope HM does too. Times have changed. Perhaps it's time.

  6. I'm so happy that they're so happy. And I feel as though we are seeing a new side of Harry: for someone in his role, with his family's press history, it must take a lot of courage to release such intimate portraits. That willingness says as much to me about their relationship as the beautiful (and rather sexy!) photos.

Don't love the dress... it's almost too formal next to Harry's suit, and I generally don't love nude bodices.

I am not crazy about Meghan's gown, now that I have seen all of it. It The top itself is pretty, but I thought she was wearing a fluffy blanket around her legs hehe. That skirt is not really royal fashion, but it might grow on me, who knows.

  17. Stunning photos and kudos to the photographer. It is so obvious that Meghan is going to bring a firm confidence and her own agenda to the Royal Family, seldom seen in new brides. Nobody is going to do a number on her while she transitions into the role. Her dress, although striking, is over the top for the occasion and doesn't coordinate with Harry's very ordinary attire. It is also a tad risqué for the position that Meghan is going to hold. I do wish them the best of luck and happiness. They are obviously very much in love. May they always feel this way together.

    1. I agree. It's a beautiful dress but is a bit more exposed than I think her position would allow. It would be lovely as a Vanity Fair cover if she was strategically positioned(which she kind of is here).

Meghan's version of the dress isn't risque--it is lined. It does not show what the runway model's version shows.

    3. I agree, Laura and Katie. Of course in the high fashion and celebrity eschelons this gown probably seems borderline Puritanical, sadly, lol.

Let's hope Meghan keeps it demure but sexy, not
burlesque or too advant-garde. She is the new kid on the block and as such it is often wise to test the waters slowly and with respect to being a senior Royal now. A Senior Royal now. Can you believe it? Not just a member of the Royal family but a Senior Royal. Amazing.

  19. They are beautifully shot photos and captures the couple's happiness. Props to the brilliant photographer.

But oh dear I'm afraid the choice of the dress is a major PR fail, both for its £56,000 price and edginess. I really wish she could have chosen a more modest design. I can't believe she wasn't advised against it.

    1. Renny I am usually firmly on the fuddy duddy side of things (ask me about ripped or skinny jeans!) and yet I couldn't disagree with you more.

Far from a fail, I think this dress is fabulous, and these photos present modern, fresh, young, sexy at it's best, which yes, the royals desperately need a little of right now. From Harry & Meghan's seats, which are back a few rows from the throne, there's not a thing wrong with it, in my opinion.

      Delete
    2. Claudia, I totally agree with you. The dress is indicative of who Meghan is - a vibrant modern confident woman. She is not being disrespectful - she is simply showing her confidence and happiness. Things do not have to be "matchy matchy" - Harry looks perfectly appropriate beside her. They are showing the world their love and happiness, and indeed letting us all enjoy it with them. I believe it is significant that they are showing , right from the start, a warmth and welcome to both the media and the people. Completely refreshing and much needed. They hit a homerun with this one - especially with releasing the third picture as a "thank you". Very media savvy....

    4. I agree, Claudia! She is bringing some welcome glamour to the family, and doing it in a tasteful and unique way. I'm not a fan of ripped jeans, but this is not even comparable. There's no way in heck she paid for that dress, and she's pretty well free to take donations until she's married I assume. Maybe she paid a token for it, but the exposure is enough payment for R&R.

      Where do I begin? lol
lovely emotive photos, not as staid and formal as previous royal ones so that's good and a move forward. :) (Although William and Kate were doing the heritage photo poses, so theirs were sweet also.)
I did almost feel like an interloper in the first photo though, lol. But it is tender and sweet. And not unlike a Ralph Lauren ad photo. So romantic. (sigh)
I love the second and third photos also. What's not to love. I am so happy to see these awesome photos. (I know, lol. Finally.... yPhotos I like.)
I do love the gown except for the transparent bodice and skirt and the €53,000 (reeeally?) price. Did I get that right?
The colors and tones and style of the dress (except for the transparent bodice and skirt) are perfect for Meghan and not dissimilar to the color and style of the dress she wore to the Christmas luncheon yesterday. Beautiful. No shrinking violet, Meghan, lol.
Again, though, maybe a little overdressed yesterday for the luncheon and definitely today in comparison to Harry's attire. If he had had on a tux (sigh) it would have looked exactly like a Ralph Lauren ad.
That is kind of the flavor of the photos to me anyway except for Harry's suit. But, hey, since he used his jacket to keep his fiancé warm .... :)

I agree about Frogmore, very much. Very much.
What a beautiful place that appears to be and such a rich history including being the resting place of Queen Victoria and Albert and other royals.
It is like Frogmore has just been waiting for Harry and Meghan isn't it? ✨
The place is already decked out inside, quite literally. I just read that Prince Phillip had the presence of mind to procure items from the Royal yacht when it was so rudely decommissioned.
A beautiful mohoghany table was one of many items he secured for Frogmore. Can you even imagine the existent decor? The history? The beauty? The fairy tale? lol
Has anyone here actually been to and in Frogmore?
Isn't Frogmore close to the grand House Prince Andrew on the same grounds?
I am so on cloud nine, eleven, twelve..... ☁️

Anyhow, these photos are gorgeous and both Meghan and Harry look over the moon and completely in love!!

After seeing this gown in all it's glory, I'm really excited to see what style she chooses for her wedding dress! My only quibble would be that Harry's blue suit didn't really work with this gown, a gray suit would have worked better, but perhaps he just wore what he was comfortable in and there's nothing wrong with that.

Personally, I think the third photo is my favorite. I feel as though I've gotten a glimpse of how they are together when no one else is around and it's really beautiful to see.

Hmm - Frogmore. Maybe a new home for them or a place for their wedding reception? I had a feeling it was more left to be part musuem/part entertaining space for the royal family/private and isnt where they go when they bury some of the family. I'm sure Charlotte will enlighten us!!

    2. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Frogmore is on the list for the reception.

I saw this on the Mail "It has also been tipped privately as a possible venue for Harry and Meghan's own bash. It may explain why Meghan was seen in deep conversation with Mr Phillips at the Queen's Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace yesterday."

  29. OBSESSED! What gorgeous photos and an unexpected surprise to see these today. Love Meghan's dress -- the top part is perfection. I'm not as crazy about the heaviness of the skirt, but she looks beautiful as always.

Good grief, the royal family has so many properties at its disposal...how on earth do they choose one? Lol! I would think that Harry and Meghan would want to be in or closer to London for their work, but maybe the commute is nothing to them. If this is to be their future home, that is.

  33. LOVE these photos! They convey such a sense of intimacy and love between these two. The one where they are sitting on the steps at Frogmore House is beautiful, they way they are sitting so close together, and doesn't Harry look so much like Philip! 35. The dress is beautiful, and I realize these photos mark an historical event of great significance, but $75,000??!! For one dress? That is just crazy, I don't care how rich a person is, this kind of money spent on one dress is shameful, especially considering that the couple's philanthropic interests. Perhaps it was a loaner?

    1. Pam. maybe they gave her the gown for commissioning her wedding gown from them and maybe her wearing was a hint (think husband shirt) for us. :)

Or maybe as an actress people want her to wear their brand as advertisement and she is very much used to that and they did loan it to her for that reason.
Their brand is getting priceless advertising and a place in Royal history.

      Delete
    2. I have to agree with you Pam, I really have trouble with the price. It is reportedly privately purchased but regardless I have trouble swallowing the idea of any clothing item being sold for that amount to anyone.

      Delete
    3. I'm struggling with this amount of money being spent on an engagement photo gown. Given her future role in the RF, I think a more modest choice would have been wiser. Certainly better PR.

      Delete
    4. The palace has said that the gown was privately purchased. It's nice enough and of course royals are going to wear expensive clothes but this really is too much for one dress. This will not go over well and I'm not impressed either.
Luckily it was purchased at least. It is not appropriate for royals to accept free clothes or loans for advertising purposes. I'm not sure whether Meghan understands the concept as it has been reported that her Scottish purse and white coat were sent to her by the brands on their initiative - this makes me a bit unsure as to whether she paid for them.

    5. She’s not a royal yet; those rules don't apply to her as a fiancée. I’m sure she’s been fully briefed on the issue.

  37. The photos are great. I am surprised she selected something so shear, but I think that we are accustomed to Kate's more classic and modest style. I am shocked at the amount spent on the gown. That's more than Kate's reportedly spent on her entire wardrobe for a year. While it's reported she's as charitable and into philanthropy as Harry it seems she is much more materialistic than she puts off. It is unfortunate she spent so much on that gown given the state of affairs around the world. Even something 1/5 of the price would have been remarkable.

    1. Katie. Did Meghan purchase the dress or was it just loaned for the photos? If she bought it and if she bought the very beautiful $6,000 earrings from yesterday, and her wardrobe continues in that way, hold onto to your hats, a media storm will loom. Hopefully the gown was on loan.
She is reportedly a millionaire in her own right so she has the money but an avowed philanthropist who cares about clean drinking water and hunger, etc. spending $81,000 in two days on a gown and earrings, and having dinner with the head of a membership-only dinner club doesn't quite fit with the thought "boots on the ground", lol.
Meghan oh please don't do stupid stuff, lol.
Harry and the Monarchy so need you. :) I am sure the earrings were a gift and the gown a gratuity or loan. Hey, if she has commissioned them to do her wedding gown maybe they threw that gown in for free. :)
Like her husband shirt, maybe in wearing their gown she was trying to tell us something. :)

      Delete
    2. I don't think she bought the gown, probably lended it from the designer.

      Delete
    3. I was wondering, if Meghan said to a designer, I want to have my engagement to the prince photos in one of your gowns, wouldn't she get a good price??

      Delete
    4. I would hope so. The advertisement they get from it is priceless. Very cheap campaign overhead, lol.

      Delete
    5. I so hope she got the dress at a discounted rate, otherwise, that's just ridiculous!

      Delete
    6. According to the Palace, the dress was "privately purchased" -- that is, not a gift or loan. It could, of course, have been discounted in price. The royals are not permitted to accept free clothing, by the way, and although Miss Markle is not yet a royal, I hope she has already grasped and accepted this rule.

    7. It's really nice to see Harry so happy. That's all this American aunt wants for him and may he always have it.

I absolutely LOVE the second photo of them where they're seated. The cuddle is sweet, but perhaps more personal in nature as others have said. The third, well, it gives me vibes of a very high end advertisement. :-) Beautiful, without a doubt, but more Hollywood than royal IMHO. The more I see of this couple, the more I see Meghan's influence being the dominant factor.

    8. Catherine has worn a cartier necklace priced at £50000. Her channel outfit alone in Paris was a combined total over £10000, and that was ready-to-wear daywear. Her off-the-rack dresses more often than not cost in the thousands, and her bespoke pieces which she relies on with increasing frequency even more. That doesn't take into account her accesories or jewelry (for example she has worn a MqQueen belt that sold for £2000). Her yearly clothing expenditure visually has a retail value of 6 digits. I expect this year will be less than average because she performed so few engagements due to her illness.
They all overspend in my opinion, but at least Megan has earned her own money. Royal reporters on Twitter stated they believe she received an extreme discount on the price tag, as does Kate for many of her purchases.

      Delete
    9. She's worn the earrings before. They weren't a new purchase. I wish people would acknowledge that Meghan had her own money and wardrobe before Harry. Everything isn't a gift from him, his family, or paid for by the public.

      Delete
    10. do you know when she wore the earrings before? I would love to see the outfits?

    11. rf, Meghan ruling the roost? lol Ya think? (There is no doubt in my mind and that. None. lol) Good point. :)

      Delete
    12. Yup, SG...I think! :-)

8:37, I'm not arguing with you, but there's a difference between wearing expensive clothing "on duty" and wearing it for the sake of wearing it. Royal engagement photos (and interviews) are about introducing the young man/lady as a future member of the RF; a person who will *serve* along with his/her royal spouse. And, generally, a recognition of *duty before self* shines through.

I will say again that I really love the photo where H&M are seated and looking at the camera. But the gazing at each other photo and the walk in the park is far more personal. It may be very special to THEM as a couple(I get it!!) but it falls under the "look at US" category which is not ideal for a ROYAL engagement. Here, the gown dominated the photos, and it shouldn't. IMO.

I think Meghan is trying to impress the public and be seen as fitting in, but she's going about it in the wrong way. If she truly loves Harry and they are a dynamite team who are prepared to represent the Queen under both very regal or very ordinary circumstances, THAT is what will matter in the end. Again, IMO.

  39. I'm in the minority here, but I have to say something about the photos seems "off" to me. I think they both look fantastic! Meghan is stunning and Harry so handsome, but I can't quite put my finger on what is amiss. Maybe the dress looks very "evening" and the lighting in the photos is bright daylight? I'm not sure... but I'm happy for them both, and I can't wait to follow them leading up to the wedding!

    1. I know what you mean Kara. The dress is beautiful, but just too much for an engagement photo, especially since Harry is in an ordinary business suit. I think the dress is very Hollywood red carpet, in its impact. Meghan is certainly going to bring a new dynamic to royal fashion.

  44. The photos are stunning and I am so excited to hear Surfer Girl's reaction :).

I will say that I think the level of formality in dressing is a bit asymmetrical to me - I agree that Meghan's gown - while beautiful - is a little OTT, especially in relation to Harry's "everyday blue" suit. I would wear this gown to a black or white tie event. And at $75k I probably wouldn't be faffing about on the steps of an old house!

  45. beautiful photos, and they both look very happy and relaxed together.

however, i don't think meghan should have worn an evening gown (esp with a net top) for day photos, and esp since her fiance is wearing day business attire. and yes, i also think the net top is not really appropriate for a royal bride-to-be.
their clothes just don't go together. it's as if she picked out her outfit without checking with him.

  46. after what happened here in my hometown yesterday, it was lovely to wake up to these beautiful photos. The world needs more light and love.

The photos look more "photoshoot" than candid to me, but I attribute this MM being comfortable in front of a camera, and honestly, I don't care if the candid was actually staged. Doesn't that happen in most wedding photos?

There is a very fine line between being true to yourself and not taking advice and learning from others. She is entering a world that is governed by different rules from what she is used to. The engagement announcement and interview was handled perfectly but I have a feeling as beautiful as these photos are they are a miss. It would have served her well to look at other royal engagements photos and asking herself why they tend to stick to formal daywear and not evening gowns.

      Delete
    2. Her adjustments are the press, the public and The Royal Family. The BRF is such a large complex group of individuals with all "sorts" of dynamics going on in terms of those who like the "prestige" or need the connection to maintain the lifestyle they desire and those who either do not like all the extra trappings and do not need any of the perks to maintain the lifestyle they like. For Meghan that is is the minefield she will have to negotiate over the next 5 years as she finds her spot in the family. This happens in any large family when a new in law joins, it is just a more extreme group than the average family she is joining. For Kate being born British and having such a long relationship with William before marriage I think really helped with all of that.

  48. I think the photos are absolutely lovely -- kudos to the photographer -- but the Ralph and Russo ball dress would have worked far better if Prince Harry had also worn evening dress. A picture of the two of them both in evening dress would have been extremely interesting and elegant. As it is, the dress, while intriguing, looked a bit much.

  50. Wow...these photos are so sexy & intimate, but also tastefully done. The dress is stunning & really suits Meghan. I love the first one with her touching his face...such a sweet moment! At first, I thought the dress was a bit too glamorous/Hollywood for a royal engagement photo shoot. But as others have said, we are used to Kate's 'safe' & conservative style of dressing, so Meghan's style is befitting of an actress & staying true to herself.
I've never seen Harry look so happy (apart from when he does his charity work)...he looks like he just won the lottery :) I would love Ralph & Russo to design her wedding gown.

I think the pictures are fabulous. I also think they both look wonderful in what they are wearing. Maybe the designer of the dress is actually in contention for her wedding dress and as a result, loaned the dress to Meghan to take the pictures. Or maybe she bought it with her own money before an engagement was even thought of. We do not know for sure. What we do know is that these pictures portray a couple in love. They could be wearing potato sacks and that would still be evident.

  53. Megan and Victoria Beckham are close friends? Could that be who set up the blind date? And yes, Kiwi Gal I'd be excited about a Ralph and Russo bridal gown as well. But what about Victoria? Perhaps not but I'll bet there will be some Victoria Beckham dresses on Megan.

  54. These pictures are wonderful. Execpt now that I heard some people see a perfume add, that's all I see anymore. Thanks twitter for that thought. :-(

Anyway, they are quite striking and send the message that they are totally and head over heels in love. Ah, I remember those days so well. Now it's all about life and what time my first work meeting is the following day, who is going to walk the dog, what do you want for dinner, and how tired we are when we get home. The love is there, just different now.

I like the dress, but it isn't really my taste. I don't any issue with her wearing it or having a sheer bodice that is so obviously lined even down through the sleeves. Or that it costs about half of what I paid for my condo. It's just not my taste but I can still appreciate it.

Your second paragraph brought tears to my eyes and warmed my heart. You summed up most of our daily lives simply and in one paragraph. :)

Your third paragraph gave me relief and hope as I am happy Meghan wasn't as bare bosomed as the model. I agree with Claudia that Meghan will be a crisp, cool breath of fresh air, but I unabashedly draw the line at nudity being acceptable public evening (or day) wear. Leave something as special and private. That's just me.

And I join in with you in your fourth paragraph, and echo the chorus here, in supporting true love and marriage. ❤️

    3. Ya kno...I do understand why someone would see a perfume advert. Also, on twitter, someone described the top of the dress as something an ice skater would wear. For me, I thought it was a bit “trying too hard”. They are a beautiful couple and do not need to stage their photos. The engagement interview proves how close they are. Meghan is a beautiful lady who can wear anything and look amazing. To my eye, Harry’s suit and shoes do not really match Meghan’s dress in formality and occasion. His outfit looks says daytime and hers says nighttime. Am I missing something?

    4. Gosh, now all I see is a perfume add also. It is very beautifully photographed, but maybe a tad staged? I am very happy for them both, and that Harry has found someone to share his royal duties with. All I can wish for is that this is all for real, and when the attraction of their fairytale, whirlwind romance settles down, what remains is true love. I am concerned that they have not yet had a hard phase to strengthen them yet. Yes, their short relationship may be a worry, but they are older and wiser, so hopefully they have made the right choice. Big cheers for lots of right choices in the future!

  55. Meghan lives at the Palace, had family lunch at Buckingham, will marry in a castle, had engagement photos at Frogmore.
Her engagement photos will be framed and displayed in a castle or Palace and the National Museum of Art
most likely. They are part of history now.

She is trained for the world stage and Royal diplomacy.

She will be a woman who works and a woman who lunches. Partaking of some of the finest foods in the world. And being a foodie and wine lover, she will partake of one of the oldest and finest wine collections in the world. Wines from there might make Tignanello seem like root beer. Not too mention her experiencing wine pairings from the best wine experts in the world.

She once said her most treasured possession is her passport. Travel wise the world is truly now her oyster.

All this in less than 18 months actually, given she and Harry saw each other around every two weeks during that time.

  56. More on Frogmore House:

The house dates from the 1680s and was purchased for Queen Charlotte in 1792. Here the Queen was able to indulge her love of botany and laid out the garden with many rare and unusual plants.

At one time the house was the home of Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent. After her death, her son-in-law, Prince Albert, commissioned the building of an elegant mausoleum to hold her remains. Queen Victoria was particularly fond of Frogmore's peaceful ambience and it became her favourite retreat.

Victoria and Albert's love of Frogmore lead them to break with tradition and build themselves a much larger and grander mausoleum for themselves.

Favoured also by King George V and Queen Mary, they used Frogmore for entertaining during Ascot Week.

    2. Over the years Princess Michael of Kent has been a controversial figure, as she quite often does something that is not acceptable. She is rebel at best and a nasty person at worst. It doesn't seem to matter to her if she is a part of the Royal Family (by marriage, not by birth.) When one member of this family acts out, then everyone in the family is impacted. How inappropriate, how unkind and shame on her.

  65. I think the 3rd photo was released due to the negative comments about her expensive dress. Prince Harry has an attractive suit on and she appears to be attending an evening ball. While both look attractive in the photos, the gown requires a darker suit or black tie.

  66. I was absolutely delighted by the photos when I first saw them - I think my first post says it all... - but my brain registered "something off" every thime I looked at the photo with "the gown"... and you know what? Call me "OTT" - but it was the "role reversal" that got my "lil´ol´brain" startled! The "Prince" is wearing an "ordinary suit" - whereas "the commoner" is wearing "the Cinderella dress". So Harry is really telling us: "I still can´t believe my luck - I´ve found myself a PRINCESS - MY Princess!! I´m just an "ordinary" guy - but she´s a "Princess"!!"

It's a nice dress for the red carpet and any showbiz occasion but there would have been thousands of stunning, festive dresses that wouldn't have looked like an evening gown.
The attention (for myself at least) was on the dress first, then on Meghan and Harry and their deeply moving expressions.

  68. While I thought these photos and dress in comparison to the suit somewho odd in the first place, on a second look it makes sense. The brownish color matches the ginger hair so the photo is well balanced. And I think they brought a couple of different clothing for the shooting and may have other photos but together with the photographer they have choosen these one's as the most perfect and telling one's. And they tell the story of love, of happiness of two adult people als team of a woman becoming a princess and a "blue" blooded in a blue suit... love it and it makes me chill to look at the happiness. IN addition I think it might be a dress she had for a while like all clothing she has wore in the last weeks. She seems not to be the type of leaving everything behind she had and buy into the new role immediately. As an actress wearing this dress on a red carpet you get discounts....

The brooch and PMK' s expression are both very unattractive in the photos. (A very decisive look on her face btw like she had been just waiting for that photo to be taken, she and her brooch.) What an insult to Meghan and also to the Queen. Insulting one of the Queen's other guest and future member of the family. Not to worry. Nothing the Queen and Meghan can't handle. :) I wonder if she will be invited to the wedding? I cannot believe that woman did that. God help her.

  72. Surfer girl, I agree that M and H are very detailed and symbolic in their choices. I wonder if Frogmore might be their country home, too, or, here's another theory...they might accept the tainted titles Duke and Duchess of Windsor and breathe new life and meaning into them?

  75. The pictures SPARKLE all the way. Ms Markle is an actress and actresses are given clothes to wear, with the expectation of exposure; similar to what happens walking the red carpet. For the Royals, this is a little bit of ‘Hollywood’. I doubt Ms Markle purchased that gown at that price just for a photo.

Frogmore House makes a lot of sense as a residence...it is only 20 minutes from Heathrow. “Most treasured possession a passport”, ties to Canada, desire to do work in Africa, Invictus different places in the world...this will be a traveling pair. Would help with the overshadowing of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge perhaps. If it was me I would want my kids to be near their cousins though and I would live in Kensington Palace...but I am a sharer! Not sure about William and Kate in that regard, no disrespect intended.

    1. I do not know much about the Royal Residences, but I would be surprised it they returned Frogmore House to a private residence. I think the issue with KP is finding enough space for Harry and Meghan if they any kids. I do not know if the family already owns other country property within a few hours of London. Because Harry is the second son, he and Meghan have many options. I have no idea what type of home environment they want for themselves or the kids. The kid issue and education desires usually play a huge role in where you decide to live.

  77. Can you believe Princess Michael of Kent wore a racist brooch to meet Meghan? How very hateful. What is wrong with that woman?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To me, Princess Margaret is communicating to Meghan, "Remember your place." The fact that she even owns this brooch is offensive. I hope the Queen or someone told her to remove it before vshe met Meghan. And yes, I do believe this was on purpose!

      Delete
    2. This brooch is appalling. Her wearing it is appalling. Surely someone will say something to her about it. Her wearing that is reprehensible.

      Delete
    3. If Prince Michael said nothing to his wife before they left home I doubt anyone else would either. It is a hopeful thought but I doubt she would have removed it if someone had caught her soon enough. I truly think the woman would have left the gathering before removing the offensive piece. Perhaps she did. Do we have departure photos? I will hold on to that thought.

    4. Of course it was on purpose. No one can say that she just happened to wear this brooch the day she met Meghan.
I've now read that she apparently told a group of African Americans to 'go back to the colonies' in a New York restaurant a couple of years ago. She might be a princess but she's certainly not a classy one.

    5. Right now she is living next to Meghan at Kensington Palace. lol, lol Obviously "Her Supreme Haughtiness" (sorry. didn't resist)
is SO irked by that that she just couldn't contain herself and dared to wear that reprehensible brooch and that icy stare.
Hopefully Meghan will do her daily doggie walk going by her infamous neighbor's apartment, head held high whistling "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". 🎼 Gus will give a loud bark or two just for punctuation. 🐾

  79. What gorgeous engagement photos. They both look so genuine and comfortable with each other, it is really lovely to see. I especially like the third one where they are walking together, because it is so spontaneous and natural--a small window into their world together.

The only thing that really bothered me is the price of the dress, and the message that sends. I have no problem with Meghan or anyone in the BRF spending their money privately on such a dress and then wearing it to a private party or engagement. What bothers me is choosing to wear it for the engagement photos, which are public and will be added to the archive of the Royal family's history. To me engagement photos should be about the couple (which these are) and not about the fancy clothing. And so to me the dress is an uncomfortable distraction from the purpose and joy of the photos. The idea that somehow a happy engagement is associated with a gown of that cost (even if privately bought or even if given as a gift by a friend) to me sends a message about wealth being a part of happiness here, which is uncomfortable for me to see anyone associated with the BRF doing. Meghan has every right to be happy about living a "fairy tale" dream of being a princess who can wear priceless jewels, or very expensive clothing, that very few other people can--I just wish she would do that privately and not in her public engagement photos. It makes me sad to see.

  80. I have seen Harry look absolutely miserable in the past---there were some gatherings on the balcony where he actually looked mad. The expressions on his face are just remarkable---I didn't he know had such expressions! He is indeed smitten and I think he loves the constant touching. He has not had girlfriends who were so affectionate and I think he needed that.

Regarding Meghan, all of what she is was due to her own hard work and intelligence. And every time I start to relax I read some disgusting comment or see something like Princess Michael of Kent wearing that brooch! I think she is a remarkable person . I' glad that Kate is also such a special person---there should be no jealousy and the two couples should enjoy each other a great deal in the years to come.

  82. I was reading online a British publication, that had a place for people to comment. The line of discussion was that Meghan's dress was too red carpet and too over the top for this occasion. Someone said something that cracked me up. I believe it was said in good humour, not malice…."What fun. Now we have our own Kardashian's."

    ReplyDelete

    1. But they are not the Kardashians, the Kardashians have their own show and are seen on a daily basis, Harry and Meghan are never seen and have sucessfully ghosted the press for a year. Meghan although she had a social media account presented a curated life and NEVER even mentioned having a boyfriend for two years. To be honest the Royal Family of the 80's and 90's was closer to The Kardashians, not Meghan and Harry who stay out of sight.

  83. I've been reading numerous comments criticizing Meghan's dress as unsuitable for an engagement photo especially when paired with Harry's blue suit. In my opinion, it is exactly that juxtaposition suit and dress that makes the photo so wonderful. Some have said there is something "off" about the photo. Well, Meghan herself said that it is something a little "off" that makes things beautiful rather than perfect. If they had wanted a photo of a couple in evening dress, I'm sure they would have done it. Harry really rocks a black tie and tux. It would then really look like a glamorous ad. That blue suit is so identified with Harry. Even his shoes were the casual type of suede shoes of the type seen on Harry in many photos. The blue suit was so "Harry." The dress is so "Megan", romantic, whimsical, yet edgy. The more I look at the picture, the more I think that it captures them. In the photo where they embrace, Harry seems to be wearing a coat, and is wrapping it around her. So touching, evoking passion and tenderness. I wish them well, and a lifetime of happiness together.

  84. I posted this is on FBB's blog already, but I see it is applicable here, too. To everyone complaining about the cost of this dress: 1) She probably didn't pay that much and 2) are you all forgetting that Kate's wedding dress cost $434,000?? And that was most definitely not a loaner. Not to mention the cost of all of Kate's bespoke McQueen and Packham gowns worn over the years. Beautiful, well-made fashion costs money. Just because some of us can't afford to wear it doesn't mean those who can shouldn't. Saying Meghan isn't relatable because she's wearing an expensive dress is like saying the Queen isn't relatable because she wears the crown jewels. They're ROYALTY! There isn't a lot they do that's going to be relatable to anyone. I for one think the photos are gorgeous, and most importantly showcase the couple's love for each other in their happy expressions.

    1. Heather, that was beautifully articulated. If Megan can’t wear this dress, then who on earth can?

    2. I deliberately stopped myself from making a comparison with Kate but since you already did, I will add this: I cannot remember Kate wearing a gown that cost as much other than her wedding gown.I would be happy to be corrected if you can think of one. The wedding gown is à different story, it was her wedding gown after all. However I do think Meghan should stay beneath that amount as she is not a future Queen and the wedding will not ne as big as William and Kate's was.

    3. Very well said.

All these comments shaming Meghan for her choice, for daring to wear something slightly transparent or sexy or expensive, are borderline misogynist. I'm so glad she's wearing what makes her feel beautiful. Just because it's not a coat dress buttoned up to her chin doesn't mean she's disrespectful or inappropriate.

"The Tig"? All the photos there were so artfully done. Not as in artsy, artsy, but as in pretty. Ones on her Instagram are also. Her whole blog was just, pretty.
I think we will be seeing some beautiful stuff from Meghan.

  87. Well, here's Erika with her bah humbug comment. I waited a day to see if my impressions would change but they haven't, so I guess this is how I really feel. While I can appreciate the beauty of these photographs, I'm with the posters who think this is OTT. It does resemble a fragrance spread or the engagement pictures of some actress in VF or Match. It does not say royal engagement to me at all. Also, the way she hangs on to him as if she's afraid he will run away is driving me nuts. I'm not sure she's as independent and self confident as everyone seems to think she is.

    2. Erika, regarding the way Meghan hangs on to Harry: I believe the word is "Clingy." It bothers me also. I am fine with people being affectionate with each other. William and Kate are in love, you can tell that, but they are not so touchy feely, at least not out in public. Most of us love our partners, but we don't cling. That is so high school and not necessary for a women approaching 40. I agree, perhaps Meghan is not as independent or self confident as we are led to believe. I do like her, so hope that she will move past this phase.

    3. Erika, I'm with you on every point you made.

    4. Erika I echo everything you said. I would have expected more restraint right off the bat. Sorry, but I don't care for these pictures. Also echo what you say about the body language.
I would love to be proven wrong but from what I have seem so far I still cling to my belief that this was WAY too rushed and Meghan should have waited to understand royalty and the British culture before jumping into this. Harry is impulsive and she can't wait to start embracing her new role but I think mistakes will be made.

  88. 👑 Upon reflection. Heather you are so right. I have changed my opinion about the gown. The Royals wear fancy, expensive, bespoke as a matter of course. They live in castles, palaces and on estates. And they ride in Bentleys and rare historic carriages. They wear priceless bling. And they do philanthropic work. In fact most philanthropists live wealthy lifestyles because they are wealthy. That is why they can do philanthropies. Because they are wealthy, lol.
So while €56,000 is €56,000, it is not unusual in the realm of palaces, castles, crowns and tiaras.🏰

  90. Now that I’ve found my words after first viewing these photos I felt compelled to comment again. I’ve read what everyone has said about the dress and it’s price and appropriateness and I respectfully disagree. There are 2 things this couple is known for - Hollywood and family business. To me, the dress is saying - I’m Hollywood, I know it, I embrace it - I’m still me. On the other side - the suit shows Harry is the same guy he always has been - he isn’t changing himself. They’re mixing their worlds and this photo is great juxtaposition of the “elite” and the “common” switching places and still remaining themselves.

I ignore price tags because to be honest, it’s a fairytale. Most people cannot afford what they spend on clothing so I don’t even try to compare or let it affect my opinion. Are they practical? Not in the least. Can they get away with the extravagance? Seems to be so.

As for the brooch incident - I find it hard to believe that Princess Michael of Kent didn’t know it would cause controversy. Out of all of the jewelry and accessories she probably has, choosing that is wrong for so many reasons. It’s in poor taste when you know there is already so much being said on the topic of Meghan’s mixed race. I really could care less how she tries to spin this. It was in poor taste - she should know better.

  91. I don't get the hysterical reaction to the dress. Yes the price will be mentioned. but does it deserve think pieces and second day coverage???? Enough, I'm sure she has learned her lesson and will show up at the church wearing a beanie with her head bowed. Or hopefully she and Harry are totally unplugged and enjoying the Holidays and each other.

  92. Although I don't have a problem with the dress, from a PR point of view I think it was a minor faux pas, however after the current 48 hour outrage cycle it will be forgotten.

I would advise them both to be mindful of the optics in the future, to take the temperature and step back a little. Be aware of the Daily Fail, one good thing then amplify one small problem and try to eliminate the small problems they can pick up on.
