UPDATED: Harry and Meghan Kick Off 2018 with Visit to Brixton

For their first official engagement of 2018, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Reprezent 107.3FM in Brixton, to see their work supporting young people through creative training in radio and broadcasting, and to learn more about their model of using music, radio and media for social impact.

The couple who are no doubt immersed in wedding planning at the moment enjoyed a "fantastic" Christmas with the Royal family at Sandringham before a romantic break to Monaco to ring in the New Year. Back in London, Harry and Meghan are looking forward to carrying out a number of engagements around the UK before the wedding.

Kensington Palace press secretary Jason Knauf said: "This is the country that’s going to be her home now and that means travelling around, getting to know the towns and cities and smaller communities." Today marks Meghan's second day of royal duty; she and Harry carried out a successful day of engagements in Nottingham in early December.

The couple arrived smiling and holding hands.

An arrival video from Sky News.

The crowd certainly gave the couple a warm welcome.

Meghan looked both surprised and delighted by the cheers from the crowd.

The atmosphere in Brixton was electric. This darling little girl, Davinna, made a beautiful poster to welcome Harry and Meghan :)

Station Founder Shane Carey described the visit as a "massive profile boost". SW Londoner reports:

Station founder Shane Carey believes the Prince and Miss Markle are the perfect fit for Reprezent’s core values. He said: “The excitement internally and with the audience is great. I think from an organisational point of view it’s really good because we’ve been working with young people for years now in south and east London.
“Harry’s massively interested in youth development, mentoring young people and everybody having a chance, and that’s exactly what we think. Meghan has been very vocal on women’s rights and we’ve got a 60-40 split female-male, we’ve always had more young girls apply than blokes, so I think that’ll be good for her.”
The visit comes two weeks after Reprezent hosted a three-day collaboration including former Blur and Oasis frontmen Damon Albarn and Noel Gallagher, which Mr Carey believes will be surpassed by the Royals.
He said: “That was brilliant again from a station credibility and music industry point of view, but these guys coming down, the frenzy is out of this world. I don’t think I’ve ever been so busy talking to TV and media, it’s a massive profile boost for us.”

Mr Carey told Daily Mail royal reporter Rebecca English, Harry and Meghan approached him about visiting because they "admire its ethos of mentoring young people and their work on mental health". It's very interesting to hear background on how the couple are choosing their pre-wedding engagements.

They will be keenly aware of the enormous levels of media coverage they are receiving and obviously wanted to shine a light on the work at Reprezent Radio.

The Reprezent training programme was established in Peckham in 2008, in response to an alarming rise in knife crime, to help young people develop and socialise through radio. Since then, it has transformed into a hotbed of UK music talent.

From the Mail:

'Meghan confidently introduced herself, 'Hi I'm Meghan, nice to meet you too', followed by Harry, and added: 'I hear your show is very popular. I can see why you are so popular, you are so thoughtful in your approach.'
DJ Glory told her that she first came into the station when she was 16 on work experience and explained how much she had learnt about not just radio but the music industry and media in general. 'Reprezent is not just a place you go to work but it's a family, anything you need they are here for you, they nurture you until you are ready and ripe,' Glory said. 'You'll go onto Beat1….' said Meghan. 'And then there are three thousand people on the waiting list and it opens up a space for someone else to have the same experience. It's amazing, it so cool,' said Meghan, who had clearly studied her brief.'

Harry and Meghan listen to Reprezent.

Harry has been passionate about tackling knife crime for several years. He recently discussed the problem during his stint as guest editor on BBC Radio 4. The Prince stressed the importance of positive role models encouraging young people to choose the right path.

Training hundreds of young people every year in media and employment skills, over 4,000 young people have been through the Reprezent programme, with over 3,000 on the waiting list. It offers accredited training and support in topics ranging from audio and radio production and editing to communication skills and confidence building, work experience and volunteering. Throughout training Reprezent offers personalised support to enable young people to fulfil their potential, and to progress to further education and employment opportunities. They also offer programmes supporting young people with specific issues like mental health challenges, having recently launched a regional mental health programme with a network of schools.

Many of the young people who complete training can progress onto volunteering roles as presenters and producers on Reprezent 107.3FM, and many of their young talent progress their careers with employment at some of the most prestigious media companies in the UK. Reprezent secured an FM radio licence in 2011 and the majority of their playlist is unsigned, with many artists broken via Reprezent continuing to achieve the highest music industry success.

During their visit to Reprezent FM Studios at Pop Brixton, a temporary project that has turned disused land into a creative space for local businesses, Harry and Meghan met presenters, content producers and staff, heard more about their training programmes.

Prince Harry was asked about gender equality and turned to Meghan saying "She answers the questions". More from The Telegraph:

'Once inside, the pair listened to the station broadcasting, meeting 17-year-old presenter Glory and donning headphones to listen to 'Flirt' by the artist Pote Read. Prince Harry made Meghan laugh by gesturing towards a CD mixer as if he was about to start "scratching" a track. As their few minutes with the presenter ended, Mr Markle praised her work, adding: "I can see why your show is so popular. You're so thoughtful and your approach is so engaging." She then made everyone laugh when she added: "I must tune in."
Prince Harry, who had impressed young people at the radio station with his attempt at an elaborate handshake, fell down slightly when asked by Jeremiah Asiamah whether he had heard of Giggs, a rapper. "He said 'what, events?'" Mr Asiamah wrote on Twitter afterwards. "Fair enough."
Later in the session, the Prince also demonstrated their thoroughly modern relationship as station manager Adrian Newman told him that they had a question for him during a discussion on gender equality. Prince Harry pointed at Meghan and swiftly replied: "She answers the questions. "Yes, talking of gender equality!" Ms Markle replied, with a smile on her face.'

The couple met some of the current and former volunteers who have benefitted from the training.

A special handshake for Harry.

Brixton is a lively, multicultural area with a down-to-earth vibe. "Brixton Market offers street food and vintage finds, plus clothes and produce that reflect the area’s Caribbean roots. Casual eateries serving global fare line pedestrian-friendly Brixton Village. Late-night revellers hit celebrated bars and live-music venues such as the O2 Academy Brixton for rock gigs, and Hootananny for cutting-edge sounds."

The area's journey to where it is today has been a long and difficult one. More from Wikipedia:

'Brixton was the scene of riots in April 1981 at a time when Brixton underwent deep social and economic problems—high unemployment, high crime, poor housing, no amenities—in a predominantly African-Caribbean community. The Metropolitan Police began Operation Swamp 81 at the beginning of April, aimed at reducing street crime, largely through the repeated use of the so-called sus law, which allowed police officers to stop and search any individual on the grounds of mere "suspicion" of possible wrongdoing. Plain clothes police officers were dispatched into Brixton, and within five days almost 1,000 people were stopped and searched under this law. There was intense local indignation at this, since the vast majority of those stopped by the police were young black men. The riot resulted in almost 279 injuries to police and 45 injuries to members of the public, more than a hundred vehicles were burned (including 56 police vehicles), and almost 150 buildings were damaged, with 30 burned. There were 82 arrests. Reports suggested that up to 5,000 people were involved in the riot.
Following the 1981 Brixton riot the Government commissioned a public inquiry into the riot headed by Lord Scarman. The subsequent Scarman report was published in November 1981 and found unquestionable evidence of the disproportionate and indiscriminate use of 'stop and search' powers by the police against black people. The report made a number of recommendations and led to a new code for police behaviour in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the creation of an independent Police Complaints Authority in 1985. The 1999 Macpherson Report, an investigation into the murder of Stephen Lawrence, found that recommendations of the 1981 Scarman report had been ignored and concluded that the police force was "institutionally racist".'

When Prince Charles visited the area with Nelson Mandela, the South African president lauded it as "heartland of the anti-apartheid struggle". The visit is still fondly remembered over two decades later. Aubrey Nunes told the Brixton Blog: "That day when Nelson Mandela came to Brixton was the most important day in the history of Brixton. I was an agent between the anti-racist and the anti-apartheid movement in London. I took my kids off school that day, which I’d never done before. It was truly special. Whoever played the national anthem only played the first half – it was a terrible mistake. I feel very proud that Brixton was singled out, it was such an honour. The most famous politician in the world comes to London and chooses Brixton. Brixton had a long, active record of supporting the freedom struggle and that was presumably registered somewhere." In recent times, the Queen and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Ebony Horse Club in Brixton in 2013

After the engagement, it was time for a quick walkabout. The photo below captures a lovely moment. The look on the Police Officer's face perfectly sums up the atmosphere and vibe outside POP Brixton.

The Mail Online reports:

'Sandra Wiltshire told MailOnline: 'It just means so much. In 1900, my grandfather signed the 1900 Uganda Agreement with Queen Victoria. Because of the royal connection we've always felt close to them.' She wept as she held their hands and told Meghan: 'Thank you, thank you for all you've done.' Speaking afterwards, she said: 'I just love Prince Harry. For him to have found someone who he really loves it is amazing. You can feel their love I wish them all the best. Ms Wiltshire ran a shop for 25 years from across Pop Brixton and added: 'I just want to say it was a dream to meet them. I wish them all the best and thank you so much for coming to Brixton.'

Meghan received flowers from locals, she was very much in her element meeting people.

A fantastic photo of a well-wisher taking a snap.

Back to The Telegraph article:

'Speaking outside, after meeting the couple, 62-year-old John Loughrey said: "Meghan came up to me and I told her that I had her favourite flowers [peonies] and she said thank you. "I said congratulations on your engagement and that all the royal fans will be celebrating with you in red, white and blue. I was very touched and surprised that they came over. It was a proud moment for Brixton and we all love them."
She told one member of the public she is "so excited" about her forthcoming wedding to Prince Harry.'

Sky's royal reporter Rhiannon Mills said: "I don't think we've seen anything like this in terms of royal visits for a very long time".

Do you remember Davinna who brought a gorgeous poster and drawing for Harry and Meghan?

You'll be pleased to hear she had the opportunity to give it to the couple. Meghan said "That's so sweet. Thank you sweetie. What's your name". Harry added: "I love that. Did you make that yourself". The video was filmed and kindly shared by fellow Meghan blogger 'Meghan Maven'.

Meghan looked effortlessly stylish in a mix of Canadian and British brands today.

Meghan wore the Smythe Camel Brando Coat (with thanks to Meghan's Fashion). The brushed tweed piece is described as "A tailored SMYTHE coat in a sophisticated midi length. Notched lapels meet at the buttoned placket, and 3 pockets detail the front. Padding structures the shoulders. Back vent. Long sleeves. Lined." The $995 garment is now available for pre-orders.

Meghan's gorgeous black sweater is the £45 Marks & Spencer Autograph Wool Blend Round Neck Bell Sleeve Jumper (with thanks to Meghan's Mirror).

It looks very much like Meghan's belt is the Artizia Babaton Amos style she wore in Nottingham.

What Meghan Wore identified Meghan's shoes as the Sarah Flint Jay Pumps. The $395 black suede pumps feature a distinctive tortoise patent heel. They are also available at FarFetch.

Meghan's trousers are by Burberry.

Meghan's oatmeal scarf is a sold out style from Jigsaw.

Meghan accessorised with her $375 Les Plaisirs De Birks Gold Bar Earrings.

The engagement was without question a resounding success. The reaction from the crowd when Harry and Meghan arrived was incredible; Meghan herself appeared incredibly touched by the support she received. She is already doing so well, and walked in very knowledgeable of the history, work and impact of Reprezent on the community. I thought Meghan's look was perfect for the occasion. When she took off her coat and scarf, her choice of sweater and trousers with stylish heels is a classic Meghan look: professional, sophisticated and very wearable. I enjoyed seeing the mix of well-known British high-street brands with higher end retailers. Richard Palmer reported they stayed 25 minutes longer than planned and the impromptu walkabout was a real treat. As so many on social media have said today, we're very lucky to have Meghan joining the Royal family!

We have one more update before signing off. Meghan has deleted her social media accounts. It's the natural next step as she prepares to officially join the Royal family. Kensington Palace confirmed the news to the BBC, adding Meghan took the decision because "they haven't been used in some time".

Looking forward to Harry and Meghan's next engagement :)

So miracles do still happen!! After a really horrible day today, I needed that!

    3. What a perfect engagement for them. I totally love the idea and how the program has grown to be so huge and impactful.

And pants! Love the coat, love the all-black ensemble underneath. The only thing bugging me is her hair, mostly just because of the strands that keep getting in her face. I would be batting at them all day.

YESS!! Dress slacks on a (soon to be) royal!!! I love everything about Meghan's look today; right up my style alley. Even her messy chignon ;-)

Goodness her smile lights up her eyes!

    5. YES. Finally. I love everything about her look as well. Finally a woman who is secure in her looks, her personality and does not need to Barbie it up ! Please keep it up Meghan and don't succumb to the pressure of not having a curl out of place.
Real women accomplish things with their deeds and words, not through their looks. I think Meghan gets that.

    6. Rosman, I really think this is a reverse derogatory statement.

      Delete
    7. Rosman, Meghan has a different look, but in my opinion I have to disagree with some of your assumptions . Her look is just as much thought out, planned and worked on as what you call the more "Barbie" look. It takes plenty of time and planning to look the way Meghan does. I also do not think that women who go for the Barbie look are any less accomplished because of the look nor do I think women who do not focus on their looks are any more accomplished. It works both ways.

      Delete
    8. Ali - you are putting words into my mouth. Second time you have done that. I have nothing against Barbies. I made NO statement on whether Barbies are more or less accomplished. Or whether non-Barbies are or less accomplished. You did. I merely said that Meghan is not being one.

    9. I agree Erika and ali.😊😊
The "Barbie look" does not connotate deficiency in anything at all.
And, ali, Meghan's look is very planned out, I most certainly agree. The tortoise heeled pumps to go with the town and country look of the oatmeal coat and scarf over the classic black top and trousers with real gold jewelry to accent the town and country look. Planned. :)
To me, every one of her outfits has been planned to the minute detail. Even her outfits to go to yoga and grocery in Canada. The girl had many different coats for those errands. :) She knew the media was dogging her trail with cameras in hand. :) The girl definitely thinks about what she is going to wear. :)

    10. Oh, Rosman, unless we are talking about a birthday present for a young girl, I'm with those who interpret a reference to Barbie as being anything but flattering, or even neutral. :-)

When she took her coat off inside, a few of the pictures gave me Angelina Jolie vibes at a glance. I think it's the way she stood with her hands in front of her and the all black ensemble. Lol I think my eyes are playing tricks on me!

I'm happy to see Nelson Mandela's visit being remembered. He is our local hero here in South Africa and it's always lovely to see pictures of his many visits oversees :)

  7. Lovely to see them so very happy and relaxed. Not a fan of Meghan's ensemble though. She looks completely overwhelmed by all the pieces together, especially the scarf. It almost looks like she's hoping to hide inside the scarf. And that can't be the case as she's so very natural in public. The contrast between this style and the style Catherine wears is interesting and refreshing, I just don't care for this. And the hair is a little too casual for a royal bride to be in my opinion. But they are out and happy and that's all that matters.

    1. Haha!! A 'messy bun' can be done very well and look both casual and polished at the same time, but this one did not quite work. It just looked slightly messy overall.

      Delete
    2. I actually really like it. She looks like she does her hair and makeup herself and she's not overly done up. She looks normal! She'll never be like Kate with a head full of precise curls and I think that's a good thing.

      Delete
    3. I'm not comparing her to Kate, and I appreciate that they each have their own style...but I am comparing Meghan's hair today to how I believe it should look considering the fact that she's now representing the Royal Family. "Messy bun" is one thing, but this looks like she literally didn't even wash it or make any effort at all. It's all popping up at the top of the back of her head as if she just got out of bed. To me it just looks disrespectful.

      Delete
    4. Meghan is a very pretty & confident woman. She needs to show more self-assurance in public by not hiding into the scarf, which affects her posture and makes her appear as if hunched over. She's not in Hollywood any longer, so the messy bun needs to end. Otherwise, her outfit is a huge hit, and cannot wait for the wedding!!

      Delete
    5. Today was a sartorial win for Meghan, but her hair - not so much. It's possible that she meant to go for a "messy bun" but she had a bad hair day. Or the wind tore it apart. If the royal family wants to be relatable, then a bad hair day, well, I can relate to that.

Whether she had a bad hair day or made a bad choice, it's thrilling to see her and Harry happy. I watched Charles and Diana marry, and I watched their marriage fall apart. So to see their sons in happy, loving relationships is truly heartwarming.

I think we’re just so used to seeing the duchess of Cambridge and her lovely hair, but I think this hairstyle was fine. If you look at Sophie Wessex at engagements, you’ll see that her hair is often in a simple ponytail, or I have seen her with a basic hair clip. This was a relaxed engagement that didn’t call for a full blowout, why not snooze a bit longer and do a cute bun?

      Delete
    7. A messy bun is just that. Messy. A messy bun looks exactly like a bad hair day, but it's intentional. So far messy buns have not extended to royalty. Princess Charlene lopped most of her hair off and frequently styles it in off-beat almost-messy ways, but that's about it.

I think you either like the look or don't. Generally I don't. I was quite surprised that on Meghan I like it (including the stray hair) a great deal. The whole ensemble was completely appropriate for Reprezent. Relaxed and chic. Approachable and yet royal-business like.

  15. I think this is the first time that I have to say “it’s a no from me”. The clothes are beautiful, but not suitable for a royal visit. Meghan always looks like she is drowning in her big clothes, how about something slimming and flattering instead. And the hair looks like she has just stepped out of bed. What a mess!! She needs a stylist, a hairdresser and some princess lessons. I cannot believe I just said that, but it’s what I believe!!

Gosh, I love everything about her ensemble today! Yes she's royal but the climate of Brixton seems to be humble so her outfit is just right (to me). It will be interesting to see her sartorial choices comes warmer weather. Her petite frame does seem swallowed up in the winter coats/scarves of the season.

      Delete
    2. Totally disagree with you Anonymous. Meghan looked totally appropriate and more relateable than other royals. That was the whole purpose - and she looked absolutely stylish and beautiful too!

    3. I love everything about this look! It's finally a modern sensibility brought to the royal family, reflecting how a stylish woman dresses day to day to go to her job. Comfortable, but still well-tailored and modern. I adore those shoes and would definitely snap up that coat if it didn't cost half my mortgage payment! Her hair is quite casual but I think still very appropriate and on-trend.

    4. Sorry, I did not mean to sound negative. I agree, the shoes are amazing, and the coat is beautiful. It just looked a bit cumbersome all together, maybe the bulky scarf, the huge pant legs and the big jumper sleeves just drowned the beautiful and petite Meghan. The hair left me completely unimpressed though. It is how I wear it at the gym on a bad day. Maybe she will get some help in the future, I hope so. I love the type of royal visit that they are undertaking, their input will make a huge difference over the years. I can see how engaged Meghan is and I love that. Harry looks like the cat who got the cream, it is lovely to see :-)

    5. I dont understand the comments about clothes being big for her. It is an outwe coat that needs to accommodate the clothing inside and cannot be skin tight. And thise trousers are a very formal look and are meant to look tgat way. After all she isn’t wearing a larger size. And a scarf can be worn either way. There isnt a set rule for that. Add to that the cold weather and she took her coat and scarf off inside. I just dont get some of these comments at all - isnt this how a normal woman dresses formally ? And about the hair, the messy bun will be busy she could have tucked in the stray strands but she is a quick study. Am baffled that i have hardly seen any one point out her interactions while at this outing. She gave some sound bites showed she was prepared and had read the brief(thats some work behind the scenes) and handled herself very well. I’d rather focus on these topics and less on the fashion. And this woman provides plenty more to talk about her presence at the event than clothes imo

    6. I guess this is a blog about Meghan's life and style, so we can discuss both. The interesting thing about discussing opinions, and seeing things from different angles is the whole point, I think. There is no right or wrong, just opinions. Bring them on in a friendly and polite manner that is legible to all of us, I say.

I loved her whole look. Chic but casual. My only “gripe” if you will is her lack of color. I appreciate neutrals as much as anyone and you certainly can’t go wrong with them. But this gripe is nothing in the grand scheme as I’m sure she’ll incorporate them in due time. But yes her hair. I had no problem with it. She looks nice with it up. And probably did help put others at ease. Yes she will be a “royal” soon but she’s still human after all :)

  21. I was so excited to see her look today and it’s.... something of a disappointment. It’s oddly unpolished, especially the hair and scarf, as others have said. But I love that she wore pants! And the sweater is very nice.

She and Harry looked very happy (he’s mixing it up with his sweater/blazer combo!), and this seems like a great engagement.

I did notice that Harry had to drop her hand quickly twice in order to give handshakes. Maybe that’s a reason Will and Kate don’t do it? Gotta keep the hands free!

    1. Juliana, interesting observation about needing your hands free for shaking. Bet you are correct and that Meghan and Harry will pretty quickly figure out when to hold hands and when it just does not work well.

  23. I guess I'm still in 'Giddy Kipper' mode with these two - just love watching them together and sharing in the crowds excitement of seeing these two. I think Meghan was a little taken a back by the cheers and enthusiastic screams - the moment she puts a hand to her mouth reminded of the "wow" that Catherine did when she walked out onto the Balcony at BP for the first time on her wedding. It must be something/overwhelming to feel that kind of electricity from a screaming crowd.

Loved this look - and OK a slight niggle with the hair strands and top not, but given the occassion and "youth" environment she was in, it was casual and appropriate. And nice to see the trousers. I think some posters have commented about being bunched up in a scarf, to me that just looked cosy ( it's pretty cold today in the UK) and she did remove them whilst indoors.

...and Harry is looking very dapper in his green overcoat - rather than the standard camel or navy!

      Agree with you 100%!! :-))))
I loved the scarf, too, it really looked so cosy!!
And her "messy bun": just right for the environment she was in today....
Clothes/hairstyle do send such a message to your environment!! I used to go "without blazer" on hot days while I was working in the finance industry (in sales), just a nice pair of trousers and a crisp white shirt with short sleeves. According to the "rules of the industry" a TOTAL NO-GO!! But, oh Lord, did my (often at the time just prospective) clients LOVE it!! "Oh, can I get out of that hot blazer, too?" "Of, course!!" "Dear me, WHAT A RELIEF!!! THANK YOU for that!!" That´s how people feel when you make them feel at ease - and forget for a moment the "rules" !!

    3. I am so happy for H@M, I think it was a terrific engagement, and who could say it was only her second.
As one who followed through them live via Twitter, I must say she is doing incredibly well. I can't believe how nervous she was (that's why the "constant" hand holding) and must be nerve wrecking to accomodate to his world, even for her who is so used to the spotlight.

I loved her wearing trousers, looked chic and lovely. Only her hair was in her face a lot but to be honest I can't see Meghan getting regular blow dry to get things goings. And that is exactly why people will warm to her, not to her hair but to her personality and work.

Thank you Charlotte for the lovely post as always!

  24. I think she looked fantastic. I'm 50/50 on the hair, but I think she was going for a casual vibe and overall I think it worked. Loved seeing pants!

    ReplyDelete
  25. She and Harry both looked great. Loved her outfit. The top and pants are great staples, at least for a few years, they are just a trendier version of the standard black top and pants but look sleek and modern. The coat looks warm and really breaks up all that black. Rings simple but worn on multiple fingers. Her hair was a purposeful messy bun style. She and Harry are not in the same positions as William and Kate, she can be much more modern, casual and for lack of a better word "hip" in her clothing choices.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree that Meghan can probably be more modern and hip, but "casual"...no. I don't agree that a member of the Royal Family ever gets to be as casual as this hair style is, when they are out on official duty. (And a member she is now, despite the actual marriage not taking place yet).

      Delete
    2. Ali I completely agree with you and think that's a point that needs to be made time and time again. Meghan and Harry are practically in a different time zone where royal rank is concerned, it is impossible to overstate that! And as George, Charlotte, and Cambridge 3 (maybe even 4?) grow up, the royal burden on Harry and Meghan will get smaller and smaller.

They will have many more freedoms and far less formal expectations. Harry will be further removed than Andrew is now, imagine that! Don't get me wrong, they will be a huge attraction no matter what, but the "formal" burden of royal life is something else entirely.

  26. WOW!! I just love that she is wearing trousers to the engagement. The black sweater is just gorgeous! Will try to order one for myself. hehe

Dear Charlotte, you can ignore this post or not publish it, if the following question is considered disappropriated.

    Just out of curiosity.
After following the British Royal Family for a while, I found that HM Queen, the Duchess of Cornwall and even the Duchess of Cambridge usually wear dress coats, dresses and skirts during public engagements.

Are there any specific rules or norms of the BRF that the female senior royals are allowed to wear skirts or dress coats during a public engagement (unless the nature of the event is sportive or involves outing with kids, trekking, camping or sailing, etc.) or it just depends of their preferences?
I just like the trousers look of Meghan so much and just wonder that we will keep seeing this kind of look after she becomes the Duchess.

I'm so sorry for my English. I hope my question is understandable.

Since nobody has every seen the mythical dress code for royals it is all conjecture. The fact that we have seen all royal ladies in pants tell me there is no fixed rule.
It think the reason we seldom see BRF in pants is a combination of a few things.
Firstly there are still some people who gets affronted by a woman in pants, especially in a religious sertting and if there is one thing the royals try to avoid it is affronting people.
The second reason has got to do with the Queen’s long reign. She (and Camilla to a lesser extent) grew up in a time when women in pants was completely frowned upon. While she had to move with the times those ideas tend to stick with one.
And lastly from my personal experience, when I have a big day at work, know I will be photographed or do an important presentation I always wear a dress. I just feel more confident and comfortable.

    2. Dear Duchess of the South,
Thank you for response. That makes sense. :D

    3. Agree that the Queen and her dresses is very much a generational thing and Camilla is on the tail end of that.I love the ease of dresses and skirts but I love pants when I do not want to wear tights or hose in cold weather.

    4. Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, wears pants fairly frequently.

    5. Lauri.😊 Does she really? To do Royal visits?
Who knew? lol. I admire Sophie and her work. Don't very often like her choices in clothing. But that's small potatoes, lol. She seems very sweet.
I really enjoy Autumn's interviews also.
But my favorite, second only to Kate and perhaps Meghan, is Anne, despite her strange wardrobe and Prince-Phillip-type curt remarks (wonder where she gets that, lol).
To just spend the day shopping and doing fun things though, I think Autumn would be my first choice for that. :)
      sorry. didn't to digress. :)

    6. Yes, both Sophie Wessex and Princess Anne wear trousers for engagements. Other European royal women wear pant suits all the time, even older ones. So, it’s definitely personal preference.

    7. There are photos of the Queen in pant suits too. Most of them when she was a bit younger, but one looked like it was taken not that long ago. Apparently she wore them when she was recovering from knee surgery too.

    2. "appropriate to the place and the people they were visiting" - what does that mean? I'm sorry but the "place and people" they were visiting today deserve the same respect as others they might visit, and to me that means Meghan should have taken more care with her hairstyle.

      Delete
    3. Spot on ! Today's look reflected the visit. I don't think a starched look would have worked at all. She looked lovely and at ease.
It's a joy see her face, and reaction to the warm welcome she's getting.

      Delete
    4. @ Pam from Boston It means it wasn’t a stuffy prim and proper type of visit. They were visiting young people who can relate more to laidback adults. Besides this is Meghan’s style, who she always been.

      Delete
    5. Thank you, Pam!! Everyone deserves the same respect from the royals whether they're visiting Brixton or elsewhere.

      Delete
    6. Not prim and proper, yes I get that. I don't even think her clothes today were all that casual and I think she looked great other than the hair style. It really brought the whole look down. Maybe the wind did get to it, but I have never in my many years of following the Royal Family see one of them wear such a messy style.

      Delete
    7. Pam, I want to first say that I get and agree with your point that when *any* royal is out on official duty they are first and foremost representing the monarch, be it Queen Elizabeth or King Charles. That's the first rule of their job description.

However I'm having a really tough time getting from there to Meghan's hairstyle is somehow disrespectful? I think that's more than a stretch. She clearly put time and thought into her appearance, clearly prepared for the engagement, stayed longer than expected, and did an unexpected brief walkabout outside. Wouldn't you say that says much more about how she viewed this engagement, than a few stray strands of hair?

I understand everyone has an opinion on style, but there was no affront to national sensibilities here. Her hair was not your taste, and I would have preferred it neater myself. But let's face it, it's an incredibly minor thing, and a ridiculously subjective thing. If half thought it messy, the other half didn't even notice, I guarantee it.

      Delete
    8. Thank you Claudia :)

      Delete
    9. I'm sure, Claudia, that it was not Meghan's intention by any means to show disrespect. I do agree that Meghan cares deeply about her new role and helping people in all walks of life and that people adore her so far...I like her very much. I just think her hair did not reflect that, it was more than just a few stray strands of hair - the whole head of hair was a mess...irregular part, poofing up in the back and the top, hair sticking out of the bun. I get that in itself is a style, and whether it was purposeful or not is beside the point. It just appeared to me, and that was my very first impression upon seeing the photos, that it was done in a rush after rolling out of bed late. That to me shows disrespect, because it appears you don't care how people view you.

I work in a very casual office and I wear jeans or casual pants to work every single day...some people here come to work in sweatpants or joggers and sweatshirts and sneakers. (I work in higher education where the emphasis is on what people are thinking and teaching, not what they are wearing). However, if one of my co-workers comes in with their hair all poofed up and thrown haphazardly into a pony tail or bun, I think they look messy and that they must have overslept. And actually that's okay because we are just here in our offices dealing with professors or students. But when you are at such a high profile, public engagement, especially when representing the Royal Family, you should take more care with your appearance.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Meghan's whole outfit. This is the kind of stuff I wear a lot. (sans, the beautiful coat, except when I'm back east). SO happy she went dressy casual AND that Harry did also. (cute outfit, Harry).

The only caveat was the hair in Meghan's face. It looked stringy and bothersome. She kept trying to keep her hair out of her face. Next time I hope she secures those loose strands discreetly. Loved the casual hairstyle otherwise. :)

I love the little bracelet she wore to the Invictus games and now these earrings are also on my shopping list. I had seen the earrings before on someone else and love them. I like the simple gold bar necklace in that design also. (Good thing I have a birthday coming up in May.)

  31. I am not understanding the frequent comments about Meghan being "overwhelmed" by clothes that are too big or don't fit her. As far as I can see, her clothes fit her properly (shoulders, sleeve length, etc). She seems to favour the midi length in coats and skits over lengths that are above the knee. I think her choice of midi length coats have all been very stylish, and suit her. Also, it sets her apart from Kate, who wears many coats that are above the knee, with opaque hosiery and pumps. Meghan seems to favour the midi length, and paired with boots makes for a very sophisticated look which suits her beautifully. I think her look for the Brixton visit really hits the right note for the purpose and place of the visit.

    5. "Personal home times" - I've wondered what younger royals wear when at home and totally out of the public eye. Old jeans that are no longer acceptable for even the most casual public outing? A much-loved, stretched-out sweatshirt from college? A snarky tshirt that they received as a gag gift from a close friend? I imagine that, like all of us, they have "only wear at home" clothes. But it's tough to imagine them being at home and not looking like a Ralph Lauren ad.

If she wears them often (as some royal women in other countries do -- I'm thinking of Queen Letizia of Spain and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark), perhaps Kate Cambridge will be persuaded to do so. I'd love to se her in elegant trousers.

I liked the design of the black sweater, too, though I'm not a huge fan of black tops and trousers worn together.

  52. I think had she not be entering the BRF, Meghan would be very much in vocal support of the Me Too campaign. Anyone else think her outfit choice today (all black) could have been a nod to that which took place at the Golden Globes or am I just reading too far into her choice?

I like to see how she's testing the waters with outfit choices in her early days in the BRF. As time goes on she will refine what works best for her out at engagements and it may mean a shift in her personal style.

For now I'm enjoying seeing something different from Kate. I love Kate's style but the closer Kate and Meghan's styles are the more imagined competition you will see in the media between the two I think.

Some people are used to the name being spelled one way and others are accustomed to another way. 56. I keep seeing comments saying that Meghan's clothes today are appropriate for this particular engagement, I suppose referring to the casualness of her look. I don't agree that the look is casual - although she's not wearing a skirt, the pants and the top are quite dressy.

I do think that Meghan is playing it safe at this point, and keeping her outfits very simple...solid colors, classic coats. Which is fine if that's her style...I love that look myself. But other commenters have said that she's modern and hip....I'm not getting that from these clothes today. I'm hoping that when she gets more comfortable in her role, she will start taking more risks and really wear some modern and hip clothing.

I don't want to speak for others here but for me, I think Meghan's clothes are "casual" & "modern & hip" in comparison with the British royals. I'm sure her style will evolve but I'm enjoying where she's at right now!

    2. I think casual in this context means that every woman can or already dress like she did today to go to work or for a meeting in the chilly temperature. A nice black top and pants which are staples in most closet with a mid or knee lemght coat and simple scarf and voila!
You can wear this and not feel overdress or too striking than if you wore a floral cocktail dress or coatdress.

    3. Pam, I thought of Maxima when I saw the trousers. And I agree; I don't see it as a casual look. Perhaps the hairstyle is behind those comments?? The hair is the only thing I would take up a notch today. And, no, I do NOT mean a perfect and hair-sprayed updo, but not quite this casual.

      Delete
    4. royalfan, I agree. I've said it ad nauseam so far, but the hairstyle brought the whole look down from polished to unpolished. And you can be casual and still be polished, they are not mutually exclusive.

  59. Pure perfection! Not living in the UK I am not sure what kind of paper The Mirror is. But, the comments they made about Meghan's attire were uncalled for. Everything she wore and the style she wore it in is 100% on target for todays style in the USA and most of the world. And, she may live in the UK but her style is pure American not LA as has been stated in newspaper article. There is no one way to wear a scarf, trousers are absolutely approperate to occasions. I adore Kate but I often wonder about her wearing high end designers in circumstances that are a working environment during the day rather then social engagements. Meghan fit in with the people and place she was visiting today, not to mention the weather!
And a neat tight bun in left for formal affairs. She is so on target perhaps the people who wish to create issues should actually educate themselves to the times and fashion. A good place to start would be with the Queen of Spain!!!

  62. Oh, I love her coat! So pretty. This is fun to see a different style of dress. I’m not a fan of the wide leg pant, but she looks great in them and they work for her! I like her whole look today...messy bun and all :)

  63. Read all you ladies comments... Loved that it was overwhelmingly positive and very little references or comparisons to Kate. Meghan is truly a breath of fresh air with a great deal of "star potential". She and Harry have a warmth and approachability that is reminiscent of Diana - people are just drawn to them. The Royal Family is in need of this as the times change and a future lies ahead without the beloved queen. I will say, at the risk of myself comparing the couples, that Meghan and Harry genuinely appear to enjoy their interactions with the people and that at this point, they appear to have a very cordial relationship with the press. Very important!!

I like Meghan's look except for the hair which seemed a bit too "messy" and she had to get it off her face very often. I really like her jumper! I love the way she looks and smiles at Harry in the picture where they are inside, next to the window. And the people seemed so excited. Thank you, Charlotte!

  65. Wasn't completely taken with this look. Thought the pants swamped her a bit but loved the top and heels. Her hair however, looked like she was off to the gym. Just looked messy how it was done.

  67. Just a quick comment. I love that they took their coats off inside. That simple gesture says a lot - and says a lot when it is not done. Love her outfit - I understand and like a messy chignon, but she does need to corral all those stringy strands so they are not always in her face. Rock on , Meghan. And Prince Harry, love your outfit also. Darling couple....

  68. When I saw her today I instantly thought of the article she gave Glamour, about how she settled into her style.

She said, "I was going to this event and there was this DVF lace dress with a zipper up the back, and it was so fitted, and had tea length sleeves. Even buying a DVF dress was a big deal, and I bought one in navy and black. It was too tight, and too short, and my hair was too polished, and everything about it was trying too hard.

"I think as you get older you feel more confident and you don't need to put that much effort in - to be able to throw your hair up in that very French way of doing things. If your outfit is on point, one thing has to be off for you to look perfect."

So I think today was a prime example of that, her hair was just off enough to not look like she was over primped and "trying too hard".

Now, that said, I think she is still not aware how much the royals are photographed and filmed! And though I think the look suits her, watching her tuck it back repeatedly was a bit distracting.

My mother spent a lifetime telling me to get my hair out of my eyes, I hated it, but then turned around and did the exact same thing to my daughter :) Meghan still would have looked fabulous with those stray strands tucked away.

I hate to even bring this up because it was such a fantastic event and she did a great job. She'll learn, like everyone else before her, what works for an engagement and what doesn't. And maybe she'll do it her own way regardless, and nothing wrong with that either!

  69. I love the outfit, especially the coat. Perhaps it's because I was a teenager in the 1970s but for me a midi length is so much more attractive than knee length. And I thought Megan's hair looked absolutely fine. She looked stylish but not self-consciously so.

  71. I really enjoyed the more casual look although agree on the hair being a bit distracting. But hey, time for the royal family to move on a little bit. I love Kate, but sometimes her hair is done in a very old-looking style. Maybe Meghan will help Kate to loosen up a little, although I realize they are different people with very different roles in the family. Meghan brings in a needed freshness. And I do agree that Harry looked great. Having a fiance is agreeing with him.

  73. Oh man, following this woman and her style is already so much fun! I love the coat, especially over an all-black ensemble, very chic way of doing things.

I am also in the camp that felt the hairstyle was a bit too on the messy side of messy bun, it looked like an afterthought. And the scarf was just bunged on.

But when I saw that she a. actually took her coat off inside and b. that it was a chic head-to-toe black outfit I practically high-fived my computer screen. Nailed. It. Yes, it's a black top and trousers and heels, but each element has just a slight twist. Nothing was weird or severely edgy, just a little thing to make you go 'hmmmm.'

I can absolutely see myself in that outfit, head-to-toe. Meghan is turning into my personal aspirational dresser and I'm looking forward to everything she does :).

  74. My first thought was: She loves those long kind of coats! Loved her entire outfit! The coat, the wide legged pants with the sweater tucked in. She looked very sophisticated but the outfit to me had a modern twist 👌 perfect in my eyes. Appreciated that she had a very natural make up. And to me Meghan seemed very relaxed and natural.

  75. I love her outfit, her smile, her humble approach, and her poise in the midst of all the screaming and flashing lights. Harry looks delighted, as well as protective of her. Good for him!

  76. This outfit is a big miss for me. While I understand the more relaxed vibe of the engagement, she doesn’t look polished. The coat and scarf are too big for her frame. The oversized pants seem to be overwhelming her. And as someone with the same type of hair as her, we are not girls who can pull off a messy bun. I’ve noticed that she’s tends to wear one piece that is “large”. The longer skirt at their first engagement, the long coat at Christmas.

I do, however, love the sweater. With a sleeker pant leg it would have looked lovely. The vibe I get from her clothing is LA business meeting, not royal.

  79. Something that occurs to me re: their predilection toward PDA, hand-holding, etc. I can see it being used as fodder for the public with "body language experts" going to tabloids any time they *don't* hold hands in public, predicting IMMINENT DIVORCE!!!! Makes me actually understand, for once, perhaps one of the reasons W&K are very light on the PDA, especially on official engagements. If they're peeved at each other they can just act as normal on their joint engagements and no one's the wiser.

That said... I do find the touchy-feeliness between these two to be quite charming, at least during this happy engagement period :).

  80. Commenting again to say at the :36 mark or so in the Victoria Murphy video, where Meghan says, "Are we moving on to the next spot now?" She says it with just a little tiny bit of a British accent. It's not really an accent, but just a change in cadence. She's really getting stuck in!

Lovely engagement! Nice to see Harry dashing about to say thank you and goodbye, as well. He's a charmer.

  83. What a fantastic day for Meghan & Harry! They both looked wonderful. I very much liked Meghan’s look today - I’m not a fan of pants and prefer dresses myself (I’m short and pants make me look even smaller and wider than I already am) but I really liked today’s look. For me it was classic and comfortable. The coat and scarf were perfect for arrival and departure.

As for her hair, I think I’m in the minority b/c I LOVED it. It’s not easy to pull off a “messy bun” or “topknot” or whatever you would like to call it. My hair is usually in a topknot and it’s not easy to make it look effortless. I think there are plenty of other royals whose hair always looks perfect without a hair out of place and I’m not judging but to me - it’s not practical.

I’m hopeful that Meghan sticks with what I would call her chic, cool and comfortable look going forward. She’s been able to almost seamlessly navigate her American side and her new British side and I hope she continues to meld the cultures together.

  84. First of all how good does Harry look !! He has really amped his style game and looks hot !

Also Harry comes across as such a self assured and secure man to let Meghan have her moment in the spotlight , in fact nudging her towards it! That bit of Harry telling Meghan to wave is a gem !

Evidently Harry and Meghan seem a total hit with the comman man ! I’m tired of reading that harry is so far removed from the line that Meghan n him will fade away !
I bet that it will not be the case and Diana proved that she did not need a royal status to shine and these 2 are gonna be an example of that !

  85. I already love her! Pants that are appropriate for an event and those shoes! I think I love her style!!

  86. The coat on Meghan today, YES!!!!! In the US, we would consider Meghan’s look today as “professionally casual”. You can have both looks at the same time and Ms Markle, with the sparkle, knows how to work it. I hope all continues to go well for her and Prince Harry and their charity work.

  87. The messy bun, bunched up scarf and long coat are so Toronto fashion!

It's MUCH colder in Toronto than it is in London, with temps dipping below -20C often in the wintertime. Long coats are essential if you do not wish to have frozen legs. There is also not much need to do your hair in Toronto as it usually gets covered by a giant scarf (as seen here) or a toque. Canadian fashion is uber casual, much, much less so than British fashion. I'm just seeing it so plainly that Meghan is still dressing as if she is still living in Toronto.

Maybe since she is not married yet, there is no official wardrobe budget for her and she is wearing what she already owns and still has to buy her own clothing? I would imagine so. We know that Clarence House has an official wardrobe budget for Kate, so I imagine Meghan will get a budget too, but only once she is married?

The hair and the scarf was really not a good look. She needs a stylist who can help her with Royal sartorial protocol. We may find it refreshing that she is breaking the mold and I think it's fine to wear trousers if that's what she pleases, but she risks offending people if she continues to look unpolished on official Royal engagements; she is a representative of the Queen now.

    ReplyDelete

    1. moomoo, that is why I've been saying in my previous comments - that she looks unpolished (at least her hair does), and she should take more care now that she is representing the Royal Family, but many, many commenters have disagreed with me on that. I still stand by that opinion. And Boston fashion is similar to Toronto, because of the cold temps, and there's such an deemphasis here on women's looks. My husband moved here after living in Dallas TX for 10 years and thought the women here were sloppy in comparison to the women there. So I'm used the casual look - I just think Meghan's hair was too casual.

  88. They are such a fun and gorgeous couple! I love how tightly Harry holds her hand and keeps her close with his public displays of affection. She is the luckiest girl on earth! I love that cute mixed race girl (like myself) with the sign for Meghan. It gives women like us hope that there is hope against racism. First Obama got elected and now a half black woman will be the first person of colour to marry into the immediate high ranking member of the Royal Family of Great Britain. Thanks for the excellent post Charlotte. They are so adorable and fun to watch. I hope I find love this genuine one day!

  89. I can't imagine how exhausting such an outing must be. You have to be "on" for hours while representing a royal family. Crowds scream your name and demand your attention. Flashbulbs. Knowing that your expressions, gestures, words, and appearance will be noted, discussed, and dissected.

I work on my feet with the public at an ordinary job. I like what I do but when I get home, I'm beat from being "on" and need a bit of rest and silence to come down off the day. After an outing like what Harry and Meghan just did? I can't imagine the exhaustion.

This "messy bun" thing was getting into my head.... So, to speak with Late Night Show host Seth Meyers (all those clips of all the Late Night Shows on Youtube are my lifesavers at the moment - about the only time during the day I can laugh.. sigh): "It´s time for A Closer Look" (LOL!):
I agree, especially the "top of the head"-part of the bun looks like her hair got in the way and she quickly had to take it up. You use a comb to do that bun and it would look different, "tidier" so to speak. Ok. So I googled images of her and from what I can see, she very rarely wears her hair up. There are only two to three occasions, one seemed to be more "official" than the other. Both times, the bun looked rather "messy", especially the one where she wore a black sweater. Here are the links:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/life/96702658/how-will-meghan-markle-will-become-a-royal (you have to scroll down a little bit to see the photo)

    http://www.stylebistro.com/lookbook/Meghan+Markle/k4m74At39WI/Jewelry

As you can see, as far as "buns" are concerned, she "can do even messier" (LOL!!!)
I quite liked her bun yesterday, but "the closer look" (and with my glasses on, LOL) revealed, it truly is quite "messy". There´s a difference between "neatly done with a few strands out" (I´ve done that I don´t know how many times with my own hair and always got compliments for it) and "untidy".
Rihanna might be a good example for a stylish "messy bun":
    http://stylevanity.com/2017/07/ways-to-add-a-fresh-look-to-your-hairstyle-without-cutting-it.html/hair-style-rihanna-bangs
I´m curious whether her "messy bun style" will "evolve" after yesterday.... Maybe she found it a bit strenuous having to constantly put those strands back behind her ears again (I know it would have driven ME crazy!)

Right, that´s it with the "closer look", haha.... It was fun researching, though!!
