Harry and Meghan Ring in the New Year on the French Riviera!

Despite numerous reports claiming Prince Harry and Meghan Markle planned to jet to Los Angeles to visit Meghan's mother Doria after Christmas with the Royals at Sandringham - the couple rang in the New Year with a romantic break on the French Riviera.

Early rumours about the trip surfaced yesterday when tweeter Caroline Farrow revealed her friend was on the same flight as the couple:

Daily Mail correspondent Rebecca English got the scoop on details surrounding their trip:

'Sources say the prince and Meghan Markle flew out of Heathrow on New Year's Eve on a scheduled British Airways flight to Nice. In an attempt to remain incognito, the pair boarded their 9.55am flight before any other passengers and headed straight to the back of the plane, next to the rear toilets. They also took up three rows of economy seats, either side of the aisle, even though there were only themselves and three 'edgy and nervous' bodyguards in their party.
Bride-to-be Miss Markle, 36, was sitting next to him in a black beanie hat and minimal make-up. According to one fellow traveller, the aircraft actually took off several minutes early, much to the surprise of other passengers, and shaved 20 minutes off its two-hour flight time.'

The Telegraph adds the couple are said to have been met by French border police:

'The pair are said to have been met by armed officers from the French border police and are being protected during their stay by members of France's elite Service de la Protection, the police unit responsible for the protection of foreign dignitaries.
One told the newspaper: “It would have been offered and would have been non-negotiable. “After what happened to his mother in this country and the issue of terrorism, it would be insisted on even for a private trip such as this.”

The reports add the couple are thought to be staying with friends at a private residence for several days. The weather has been sunny this week - ideal conditions to enjoy all the Riviera has to offer.

The French Riviera (or Cรดte d'Azur) is the Mediterranean coast of southeastern France. It includes famously glamorous beach resorts such as Saint-Tropez and Cannes and Monaco. A health retreat in the 18th century, the area later attracted aristocrats, artists and the 1960s "jet set." Today it’s an established holiday destination, with paths connecting many coastal villages and towns. The Riviera is a major yachting and cruising area with several marinas along its coast.

I think you'll agree, it looks like the perfect location for a romantic New Year?

At the end of August, 1997, Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed spent their last days together on his father's yacht off Pampelonne Beach near Saint-Tropez, shortly before their tragic death.

Meghan adores travelling and has explored Europe with close friends in recent years. She loves sampling local cuisine, red wines, spending time on the beaches, exploring and soaking up the culture the location she's visiting has to offer.

And of course yoga.

Royal Wedding Caterers... The Daily Mail also reports Harry and Meghan are making decisions ahead of the Royal wedding. They have decided to use society catering firm Table Talk for their May nuptials. They have been hired by the Royal family multiple times and for the Royal Wedding in 2011. More recently, they were hired by Pippa Middleton for her wedding last year.

Good for them to have a nice getaway! I hope they’re able to have some privacy while there.

  3. Great. I respect their privacy...but also hope for pictures ♡

  4. Loving all these updates - lucky Meghan and Harry. Thanks Charlotte for doing this.

  5. Great that they are doing economy . They obviously don’t need to but are choosing to fly that way !

Wish them a relaxed holiday before their wedding madness begins !

  6. What a wonderful place to start the new year! I know it’s silly but it’s nice to hear they flew a scheduled flight and sat in the back. Wasn’t the French Riviera the last vacation Princess Diana and her sons went on together? Maybe this was a reset for Prince Harry. They honored the 20th anniversary of her death this year, he opened up about his challenges coping and this could be a way of saying, “this is the happiest she was and I’m now at the beginning of my happiest years in the same place.”

I know I read too much into it but I live with intention so I sometimes assume others do as well.

  7. Happy New Year to everyone ! And a huge Thank You to Charlotte for the fabulous coverage of Meghan and Kate of the festive period !
Loved watching the 'Fab Four' as they are endearingly being called, attend Christmas Service with the rest of the BRF. I doubt anything can prepare you for the challenge she's facing, but thought she carried herself well, and looked well supported by Harry William and of course Kate, it was a lovely shot of the four of them together.
Exciting year head for Harry and Meghan, and what better way to kick start it, than a romantic getaway.
Looking forward to seeing Harry and Meghan make their way around the UK, something Meghan says she was keen to do. And I'm sure there'll be a warm welcome where ever they go !
Thanks again Charlotte for your regular updates ! :-)

  8. Well, we did get a hint with the recent swimwear purchase. :-) It looks as though a lot of security precautions were/are in place, as expected.

And just OMG regarding the wedding photos on the Table Talk website.

  9. A new engagement, how lovely and again so soon. I suppose at this time of the year (winter 15 degrees), Nice is hardly a place for swimming but each to its own.

OMG, Meghan has a breathtaking yoga pose there, wow girl!

    1. That yoga pose is so impressive. I have done yoga for years - but seeing this makes me want to "up my game". Meghan is such fun to follow - not quite in the usual mold of a British Royal - but appears to be warm, kind hearted and so friendly. Love her idea of fashion too. I can't imagine what her mother feels - it must seem unreal. As a Mom of 5, I have to believe that no matter how close she and Meghan are, she has to have some concern that she is going to lose her as she gets swept up in this new, completely foreign world....

    2. That is impressive indeed. I suppose when your mum is a yoga instructor, it is a must:)

I hope she will adjust to the royals but won't change her personality. She really seems like a nice person but it does not mean she is perfect. Her Mum must be in a difficult position, not only because of her new world but the comments she attracts. M really embarked on a journey that only a few could and did.

  11. ๐Ÿฅ‚๐ŸŽ‰$. So much for economy class, lol. Rebecca English is reporting that Harry and Meghan upon landing in Nice, flew via private helicopter to Monaco and that they were hosted there by Prince Albert and Charlene and "partied like tycoons". aahhh. It is good to be Prince/Princess. ๐Ÿ˜‰

rf, yep. she got her gear for Monaco early. :)

I love and Harry and Meghan, but their PR team? That's a different matter, lol.
I appreciate them wanting to appeal to the masses and fly economy. But taking up three rows in coach and having the plane take off twenty minutes early for you is hardly pedestrian. Better options. Fly first class. Less disruptive for the crew and PPO's and quicker proximity to exits. Less seats needed most likely. Makes more sense. Just my opinion. No offense to anyone, living or dead, or in perpetuity and in all ways legally heretofore stated. ๐Ÿ™

    1. The private helicopter only cost $500 dollars which is standard tourist travel. Also they where NOT hosted by Albert and Charlene so that story about partying like tycoons was a lie and the Daily Fail article was nothing more than a smear campaign.

      Delete
    2. I am guessing they wanted to sit at the back for privacy, unlike first class where every single passenger could see them while boarding. They bought the seats, didn't they? Lord knows how I'd like to buy myself an entire row in the cattle car atmosphere of modern travel.

    3. Rebecca English reported that there was no first section in the airplane that accommodated the short flight from London to Nice.

      Delete
    4. If they were not hosted by Albert,it must have been more expensive and not less so, surely? In any case, partying in Monaco is never low cost.

  12. Table Talk's website totally made me hungry. And longing for some fancy indulgence venues and events, lol. Apparently, Meghan has been taking notes too. ๐Ÿ˜‰
I'll have to start matchmaking for my younger family members and "coach" them into a destination wedding in London, catered by? lol Table Talk. Piece of cake. ๐Ÿฐ (I can totally do this, lol.)

  13. ✈️ There was NO first class available on the short flight from London to Nice. There you go. My apologies PR team. (this time anyway). :)

We all know how you have so perfectly adhered to those "suggested" "rules" all these years. ๐Ÿ˜Š

    3. Well, SG, royals do have a lot of baggage and I am not talking about their luggage. :-) But seriously, safety is a huge concern and security precautions are very important. I don't think it's a question of good or bad PR. A tabloid (or anyone) can choose to spin the "they flew in economy" OR the "three rows of economy seat with three PPO's."

      Delete
    4. That's true, rf. ๐Ÿ˜Š I agree. That's what I meant. Of course it would take three rows for security (I would have taken at least fifteen, lol). But first class cabin would refine the need a little is what I meant. :) It takes courage for them to even leave their house/Palace in the morning, let alone fly commercial. I have given them many kudos for that over the years as I do again now. :)

    5. Happy to help! I always wonder why you need a pal to express your "real" thoughts. Food for thought!? (No lol haha ๐Ÿ˜Š)

  14. P.S. And, I think the fact that there was actually NO first class available, only coach, was NOTEWORTHY for clarity because many headlines about them flying economy were made without mentioning it was the only way available for that flight. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  16. Sources originally said Harry and Meghan was to spend NYE with her mother in LA. Nice is a truly romantic location. Thanks Charlotte. Too bad they didn't get privacy and have a secret destination always someone has to tweet out their location their life is so public must be trying at times when you want complete privacy.

  18. General question here and I am speaking as someone who does not participate in social media *at all*. :-)

I notice that a few of the photos here are from MM's instagram... Once someone posts a photo, do they have any control over it? Can they "pull" it if they decide to, or does it become public property?

  19. I lived in Antibes which is right around the corner from Nice, its absolutely beautiful there!! probably a bit chilly as it snowed in January when I lived there, but beautiful nonetheless!!

    1. And your comment telling other commenters how to comment isnt snarky!!! So if a comment has intended veiled criticism and snark its ok?? I think we should leave it to the blog moderator to dictate what is and isnt nice. After all i havd seen countless comments saying it is ok for people to express their opinion and opinions is all there is

    2. My comment is straight up and down with no underlying tone or meaning. There is no point in passive aggressive behaviour on a blog. Opinions are fine, snark is not. Thanks Charlotte for publishing my comment and thanks anonymous for letting me know you read it. We can have different opinions without going low.

  22. Alison, I agree! What's the problem with wondering about things? It's like sitting at lunch with someone, sorting out the little details. Debating flight seating is not the same as insulting the blog subjects! So testy. Most of our musings turn out to be wrong anyway, but there's no harm in the musing.

On another subject---I was looking at the year-end review of Kate's day dresses, and some of the are just so beautiful. I wonder how some would look on MM---like my favorite, the Chanel dress. Wonder if they will raid each other's closets. :)

    1. It would be fun to imagine! I’m not sure if they’d be the same size considering so much of their clothing is tailored to fit, but there may be certain things they could share. I hope they end up being close friends in the family.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
