Titanic, Gin and Amazing Space: Harry and Meghan's Day in Belfast!

We knew a visit to Northern Ireland was on the cards for Harry and Meghan's pre-wedding tour of the UK, and due to security reasons it had to be kept under wraps until the last minute. This morning we got a royal surprise as the couple arrived in Belfast for a day of engagements.

Kensington Palace said: "Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle are visiting Belfast today for their first official joint visit to Northern Ireland. Throughout the day, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will have the opportunity to meet members of the public, to learn how young people are shaping the future of Northern Ireland, and to visit some of the city's most loved sites."

The couple flew in from London.

Harry and Meghan began a packed day with a visit to he Eikon Centre in Lisburn.

They were greeted upon arrival.

They attended an event to mark the second year of youth-led, peace-building initiative Amazing the Space.

Funded by the Northern Ireland Executive Office and organised by Co-operation Ireland, Amazing the Space was launched by Prince Harry in September 2017 and empowers young people across Northern Ireland to become ambassadors for peace within their communities.

Listen to the reaction when Harry and Meghan take to the stage :)

Meghan chatted with students about 'Peace Pledges'.

A student discussed ongoing projects with the future royal.

Prince Harry and Ms Markle watched performances by local schools to celebrate how the arts can unite different communities.

A round of applause.

Harry and Meghan heard from young people about the reconciliation work going on across Northern Ireland.

Harry said: 'Over the years religion has divided us but we're all the same underneath.'

Harry, 32, spoke passionately as he met school children who were involved in the project's direction. The royal said: 'The previous generations have caused such problems but with your help it can never happen again. 'You're trying to educate the older generation which is just amazing. 'Well done. Clean the slates guys, you got this!' Meghan laughed at Harry's passionate outburst and joked: 'No pressure...'
Harry replied that 'over the years religion has divided us but we're all the same underneath'.

Next, Harry and Meghan traveled to one of Belfast's most historic buildings, the Crown Liquor Saloon.

As you can see (and hear) a warm welcome awaited them.

When trade and industry were booming in Victorian times, grand saloons were built for Belfast merchants, shipbuilders and craftsmen to socialise in. Many are still doing business, with well-preserved interiors and friendly, chatty clientele. One of these 19th-century drinking dens, the Crown Liquor Saloon, remains one of Belfast’s finest gin palaces.

Owned by the National Trust, the atmospheric former Victorian gin palace is bursting with character, including period gas lighting and private snugs, featuring the original metal plates for striking matches and an antique bell system for alerting staff.

The Saloon is known for it's architectural marvel of ceramic tiles, carved mahogany and stained glass.

The couple chatted with staff and National Trust representatives about the pub's heritage.

More from the Mail Online:

Harry joked with Heather McLachlan, the National Trust's director for Northern Ireland, asking 'Are you open?', before declaring 'We want food'.
His fiancee added: 'We saw the menu last week, and said "We'll have this".'
The couple marvelled at the pub, which features period gas lighting, a red marble-topped bar, mosaic tiled floor and snugs - ornately carved wooden booths with stained glass where Victorian drinkers could sit in private. Looking up at the ornate ceiling, Harry said: 'It's amazing, it really is.'

After a bite to eat, Harry and Meghan met members of the public gathered on Great Victoria Street.

Meghan was given a beautiful posy.

A very sweet moment when Meghan ran over to a young girl in the rain.

A video from Simon Perry.

From royal reporter Chris Ship: "Jude Campbell is 5 years old. He had a Cadbury Easter Egg for Prince Harry. Watch how Jude quickly convinced Harry and Meghan that he’d rather keep the egg for himself. Harry did order him to share it with his sister though."

Harry and Meghan's next stop was the Belfast campus of Northern Ireland’s next generation science park, Catalyst Inc, to meet some of Northern Ireland's brightest young entrepreneurs and innovators.

An independent, not for profit organisation, Catalyst Inc is on a mission to build a community of innovators in Northern Ireland, providing the home, support and networks to nurture innovators and entrepreneurs to aim higher and succeed faster. In a celebration of innovation and entrepreneurship talented young people showcased their products and inventions to the couple, talking them through the entrepreneurial journey, from the original idea through to development of the product and onto successful, growing companies.

Rebecca English reports Meghan talked babies during the visit:

'On their surprise visit to Northern Ireland today they visited Catalyst Inc science park, she gestured at an array of baby equipment and said: 'I am sure at one point we will need the whole thing.'
The couple were being shown some of the items made by Shnuggle, a firm that makes innovative baby products. They included a baby bath which allows them to sit up, a changing mat and Moses basket.
'It's very sweet,' said Ms Markle. Sinead Murphy, who founded the company with her husband Adam, said: 'They seemed very engaged with the products.'

You can hear Meghan's comment below.

Finally, Harry and Meghan visited the iconic Titanic Belfast.

They were welcomed by Leyton and Rosie Jackson.

Meghan was given a lovely posy.

A replica of the ship for Prince Harry.

Voted the World's Leading Tourist Attraction at the prestigious World Travel Awards, Titanic Belfast tells the story of the Titanic, from her conception in Belfast in the early 1900s, through her construction and launch, to its maiden voyage and subsequent place in history.

The couple were guided through the interactive galleries, which explore the sights, sounds, smells and stories of RMS Titanic, as well as the city and people who made her.

During the visit, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle also heard about how the regeneration of the Titanic Quarter has provided Belfast with an exciting new urban space.

They were both very interested to learn more about the 'ship of dreams'.

KP shared a video.

Who doesn't remember this?

Admiring the view.

They enjoyed a five-minute cable car ride around the museum privately.

Signing the visitors book.

A great photo from the visit.

Emily Andrews shared a look at their signatures.

The couple departing.

CEO Judith Owens spoke about the significance of the royal visit.

When asked how her first visit to Northern Ireland was Meghan replied: "It's been lovely. Everyone has been so warm and friendly".

Now, a look at what Meghan wore today!

Meghan's wore the Mackage Mai Coat (with thanks to Meghan's Mirror). The $750 style is a maxi-length, straight-cut, hand-stitched, double-faced wool coat. It features a waterfall collar and asymmetrical wrap closure. The Canadian brand has been a staple in Meghan's wardrobe for years.

The Mai coat also comes in black, gold and light grey.

Meghan brought back the Victoria Beckham sweater she wore for the engagement portraits.

Made in the UK, the Cashmere Sweater is described: "Embroidered initials leave Victoria Beckham's signature mark on an otherwise classic crewneck sweater in sumptuously soft cashmere."

And Meghan's chic green skirt is a Greta Constantine SS18 style.

Meghan added another stylish bag to her drool-worthy collection! The £175 Charlotte Elizabeth Bloomsbury is available for pre-order and you can have it personalised.

It is described: "The Bloomsbury has a gold foil logo on the back, an internal pocket made for a perfect fit to any small make-up items, credit cards and change, a new gold front clasp and a sturdy handle."

Indeed, the British brand has a special connection to Meghan's future father-in-law:

'Charlotte Elizabeth is an all British-made handbag business, proudly supported by The Prince's Trust. We believe in supporting British craftsmanship, which is why every Charlotte Elizabeth product is sourced and stitched in Great Britain.
In the North of the UK, we discovered a prestigious leather tannery, where each locally-sourced leather hide is treated by the hands of an expert. Each hide is then carefully transported to our factory in Buckinghamshire, who put the best care, love and attention into making Charlotte's designs into a reality.
A lady’s handbag should be the best part of their outfit, which is why we aim to continue to use the finest British leather, brassware and craftsmen that we can find to make Charlotte's products the very best that they can be.'

I imagine the connection to the Prince's Trust was one of the reasons Meghan chose to support the brand.

The Telegraph reports:

'Charlotte Elizabeth Jones, a 23-year-old from Hertfordshire, is the designer of her namesake label (it is by pure coincidence that she shares a name with Princess Charlotte of Cambridge), which she launched in 2016 with support from The Prince’s Trust.
In 2014, when she was 19, Charlotte had attended a four-day course in entrepreneurship run by the organisation (which is headed up by Markle’s father-in-law to-be, Prince Charles) and had learned how to set up a fashion business. She had left school at the age of 16 due to heart complications, and this course gave her the valuable skills she needed to set up shop, however two weeks after the training, she suddenly became paralysed.
“I had a heart operation in 2012 and I had to leave school at 16 because of it,” Jones previously told The Telegraph. “I couldn't get A Levels or go to uni, and it was hard to find employment because of my physical health conditions.”
Jones has done a phenomenal job of starting her label - something that many recovering from such difficulties with their health might not have attempted - and with support from The Prince’s Trust, she has developed her product line, made with leathers sourced at a British tannery, and stitched in Buckinghamshire.
“I had such a clear a vision of what I wanted it to be,” she says of her design ethos. “Very clean cut, minimal and inspired by classic 50s handbags, when it was an experience to have a handbag."
Jones has had a long journey to get to this point and, as Markle’s endorsement today will undoubtedly launch her label into a different league, it feels like a reward that was worth the wait. Her thoughts on it all? Simply, “It is wonderful.”

Meghan's velvet pumps are the Jimmy Choo Romy 100. The burnt orange colour is currently unavailable.

Another terrific day of engagements for the couple!

  1. I get so excited to see Harry and Meghan doing royal engagements together! I think Meghan looks fantastic today. She stays so true to her own style and looks effortlessly elegant no matter what she wears (IMO). But here's another (serious) question....is there a trick to walking in those heels? I bought a pair recently and thought I could take the leap from my usual heel height but after one trip around the living room I could see it just wasn't going to happen. Bummed! Do I just need more practice?

    1. I think the trick is to have in mind that you are toe walking (and only this)all day long. this mental focus helped me and a lot of practice.

      Delete
    2. Hi Laura, I can totally relate re the heel height and walking! How do these ladies do it?

      Delete
    3. The trick to those heels is really strong, well-toned calf muscles. Strong calf muscles hold the ankle in place which allows walking in the heels. Sorry for the lecture but you asked ... My knowledge comes from having worked in an ortho rehab facility for 20+ years and helping women recover from having fallen off their shoes. Just an FYI: I'm in my 60's and I can still safely wear high heels because I have always had a career that, in one way or another, has required my being on my feet all day, thus naturally keeping my calf muscles really strong. So, strengthen your calf muscles which will hold your ankles in place and enjoy your shoes. Marla from NH

    4. Hi Laura, I work with a woman who wears heels like this almost every day to work and I asked her about that one day and she said she's lost most of the feeling in her feet. I don't know if she was teasing or not but I don't know if I want to go through that just to wear high heels.

      Delete
    5. I can wear heels of that height but when I look at her shoes they just look so big on her foot. I have seen that fit on other celebrities and can not figure out how they keep the shoe on. Not wearing nylons helps your toes grip but even so they just look too big all over. I wonder if all these ladies get them roomy for all day comfort but then have super grips or something in them to keep them from flopping around.

      Delete
    6. @ali: I think the feet swell up quite a bit I er the day. So the shoes might be stretched out or she buys them in a size she knows will be comfortable after the initial first two hours.
I often feel that the placement and shape of the heel makes a massive difference in how comfortable the shoes are and how easy it is to walk. My most expensive pair by Stuart Weitzmann is by far the most comfortable one. So in that case the price is not only about the brand name but reflects on the quality too.

  4. Holy cow, what a surprise!! How exciting. I can't wait to see more pictures and hear more about their visit.

Off the top, Meghan looks wonderful! I love the pencil skirt and blouse combo. Colors are amazing too. I love the rich look of her suede(?) shoes and need more info on that handbag. I LOVE her handbag game!! I wonder if all of her neutrals and blacks were because of winter and now that it's officially spring, she'll be mixing it up with more color? I hope so.

...off to scrounge the internet for more pictures!

  7. I was wondering when they would make this visit to Ireland. There were whispers of a possible visit in the news yesterday but no date was actually confirmed. It's understandable if there were security fears hence the secrecy - as I always tell my kids "Safety First!" :). Great timing from them as well, just a day after Kate goes on maternity leave, certainly helps those who may have withdrawal symptoms :)

Meghan looks stunning and so sophisticated, a lovely nod to Ireland as well with her outfit. Looks like they have an exciting day ahead of them! I do hope that people will have the chance to come out and see them despite the secrecy of the visit.

    1. Avee, I think you're right that her outfit was meant to be a nod to Ireland (with the green, white and orangey shoes and bag). The only slight problem is that those are the colours of the Republic of Ireland's flag and she is visiting Northern Ireland (part of the UK and therefore has a different flag)! I guess these are the sorts of things that she will need to learn as someone who hasn't grown up in the UK - I just hope she doesn't get a hard time in the Irish press for it.

For my part, I'm just thrilled to bits to see her wearing colours again and veering away from the black - hooray! I love the story behind her bag too. Little touches like that and the story of asking the apprentice to print the wedding invitations are what I absolutely love about Meghan and Harry - so thoughtful.

      Delete
    2. Hi Helen H :) Meghan may not be the only one who may need to know about the colours of the flag because so do I, oops! Thank you for correcting me :)

I agree with you about her outfit. It's great to see Meghan wearing some lighter shades :)

      Delete
    3. The Orangemen of Northern Ireland wear orange sashes. So maybe she was being diplomatic and recognizing both. :)

Or maybe she just thought the shoes were awesome.

      Delete
  8. What a lovely surprise! I suppose this is what all the leaks about an Irish trip after the wedding were about. I know they are still careful announcing Irish visits for security reasons.

  9. What fantastic pictures already! The color combination of skirt and shoes feels very nostalgic to me. It’s a very modest look with Meghan’s modern twists and could have been something a young Princess Elizabeth wore. I adore it!

  12. Color! I love this look with it's pops of color in the skirt and shoes. I suspect her hair will be a point of contention today, and I have to agree this time. It would be so easy to pull it back in a loose bun with a little more polish. It's distracts from the overall look of the outfit which is great.

I'm bummed that her bag is real leather :( I'd love to see her carry and Mat and Nat bag sometime.

    1. I love all the pieces in the outfit. But it all seems a bit too big for her
frame and messy. The shoes are too big for her...she must have to tape in her feet.

    2. Hello typos, lol.

The sweater doesn't look like the Victoria Beckham one to me. I don't see the VB in any of the photos and the cuffs on her sleeves look shorter than the VB sweater. Anyone else agree?

      Delete
    3. Taryn, I thought the same thing! Also, my taste leans more toward a more fitted sweater, when worn with a fitted skirt. However, I think this loose almost baggy fit may be on trend with a more fitted skirt? I'm still a little be classic if not old fashioned that way. To me, I'd wear the lovely roomy sweater with pants or jeans in a more relaxed setting, not an official engagement. But alas, again I can't speak to the latest on trend fashions, just my own personal taste. :)

      Delete
    4. Agree Becca! I liked the look of the sweater under the jacket but I don’t think the baggy fit is super flattering alone with the skirt. She definitely seems to favor looser clothes in general. It’s fun getting to know her style though :)

      Delete
  13. Oh MY! YES! YES! YES! FINALLY! This is what I have wanted to see since the engagement announcement. I still hate her coats, but she takes them off and she didn't wrap it so I'll give it a pass today. And the subtle nods to the Irish flag is very nice. Very Kate-ish. (NOT comparing them,, please don't jump down my throat)

Stylish and sophisticated, and she still looks true to her style, but with some polish! She wears separates very well, I will give her that!

Meghan has sartorially redeemed herself with me with this outfit. :)

    1. But the nod to the Irish flag was the flag of the free state of the Republic of Ireland. They were in Northern Ireland, or Ulster, a part of Great Britain, which does not use the tri-colour flag. People in general and Meghan specifically need to know this.

      Delete
    2. Ok. My mistake.

      Delete
    3. Yes indeed. My view is, just avoid both green and orange any time you’re in either part of Ireland.

      Delete
    4. The outfit is spot on but her hair still needs a stylist. The loose strands do not give a polished look, and tend to be reminder of theatrical past, not royal-future.

    5. The Queen wears green to NI. Actually, I think she wore green on that historic visit to the Irish Republic, also. Just no orange in NI---very involved history there. I don't think her shoes are orange but the situation is still so sensitive there that any color in the red/orange group should be avoided. One branch of my family is from Balleymena, a suburb of Belfast.
I think her overall look was lovely. Her facial expression has softened-especially when she is looking at Harry. Some lovely photos of the two. A little extra chemistry going on.
Security seemed less prominent than it has been, which surprises me. I think I counted five PPOs around them one visit.

      Delete
    6. She’s wearing green, white and orange today. No way this happened by accident when visiting NI. Total fail on the fashion diplomacy for KP advisers.
Green would be ok, white is ok, even orange alone might be passable, but all three together is a no-no. Makes her look totally out of the loop, like she doesn’t know which country she’s visiting.

Or maybe it refers to Harry's point about both sides having to learn to live peacefully together? As someone with Northern Irish forebears, (Catholic and Protestant) I would certainly not be offended.

    8. Eve from Germany24 March 2018 at 06:50

Anon at 22:46: she is wearing BROWN suede pumps - no orange there! They are matching the handbag in colour, although the suede can be tricky depending on the light, because due to the texture it reflects the light differently than "normal" leather fabric.

  14. This I like very much! Meghan is learning quickly, it is just lovely to see her looking so together. No messy bun, the coat is a style that she likes, that is fine, and the colours, just beautiful!!

  15. Oh, I think I have to say that this is my least favourite royal outfit of Meghan`s yet. I don`t know, the big flowing coat doesn`t seem to go with the rest of the outfit and the colours don`t really match imo. It almost looks to me like she just threw a bunch of clothes together. I do like the top and skirt together but not the coat, bag, or shoes.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I believe coats are not meant to match an outfit. They are outer ware meant to cover our clothing and keep us warm regardless if left open or closed. It is simply a beautiful day coat. Wrap around coats are extremely popular and have been in style for many many years. Meghan looks fabulous, very professional and classic in her own personal style.

    2. What do you think about the hair?

      Delete
    3. Her hair? I think today would have actually been a good day for her to wear her hair down because her dark colour would have looked fabulous against that cream sweater. I`m hesitant to say this but I find her hair to almost look a bit dirty from far away when it is in a messy bun. I`m sure it isn`t but I think that the style does look like something you`d wear grocery shopping when you haven`t washed your hair for a few days. I`m not trying to be mean here, that is just what it makes me think of. :)

  16. Well, Meghan is back to the messy bun, no pantyhose and neutral colours. I find her style boring, although thought she looked sensational with the Queen at the Commonwealth service. I do like her shoes and purse. Perhaps spring will bring some colour and a bit of pizazz. Come on Meghan, you have unlimited resources to up your game!

    1. If you have followed The Tig in the past. Meghan simply states that she prefers neutral dressing. She speaks to that on more then one occasion. I do not believe we will ever see her in lollipop colors. Most ladies who are sophisticated dressers would agree. If you are in a major metropolitan city, you will see basic black with very high heels at every turn.

      Delete
    2. Yeah,I watched one of her fashion videos where she mentioned her preferences, I do not see any "lollipop" colors in the future like you said. My opinion is she is confident in her choices.

      Delete
    3. USA Granny, I did read the Tig and know Meghan likes neutral colours. I still find it boring. I'm not sure if one would consider Her Majesty the Queen to be sophisticated, but given her advanced age, she always looks lovely. And she wears those lollipop colours. It is a personal choice, of course, but basic black is also boring and lacks individuality. The Queen wears it to funerals or remembrance services, but not many other places. But of course, Meghan has every right to do it her way.

I quite like the china and think that the 'M' used on the design will be Meghan's monogram (because the 'H' used is Harry's official monogram)...it's like a sneak peek. http://www.royalcollectionshop.co.uk/chinaware/collection/royal-wedding.html

  27. What a Nice Surprise to pop in & see a new post & a new engagement! :) Before I read the comments, I just have to share an itch that I just can't scratch! Since The Engagement photos, I've been so perplexed about how Meghan wears her shoes? This is a thing for me because a) I struggle wearing heals anyway & b) part of the problem is that my ankles are narrow so I have to have a snug fit (otherwise I can't hold them on my feet) & then that causes problems by putting too much pressure on my toes & the balls of my feet. So, from the beginning I had noticed (in the engagement photo call), how loose Meghan appeared to be wearing her shoes & how tall were the heals. I thought, omg she's going to trip & twist an ankle. Well I've noticed this continue since then. On Commonwealth day there were some shots that showed almost a finger's worth of space between her heel & the back of her shoe & today the close up pic of her velvet shoes really shows how much room she has, all around in her pumps. How oh How does she keep them on so effortlessly, without flip flopping around in them (like I would)??? How is she not stepping right out of them (like I have done) or heaven forbid, roll an ankle??? Please Help!!! I Can't figure this one out & for whatever reason it's driving me crazy!! lol :)

    1. Lol Becca, I’ve wondered the same thing. It’s a mystery how her shoes stay on when they look so big on her. She has a real skill for keeping hem attached to her feet, as well walking gracefully in those pencil heels. I’d love to know her secret 😄

LOL I've noticed this too, Becca USA! I actually wear my heels like Meghan where it looks like there's a bit of room. For me it's because my feet differ in sizes by an inch or so (my left is longer in measurement). Also I have narrow feet so shoes tend to "gap" even if I get my exact size. So I use Foot Petals inserts to accommodate my awkwardly sized feet! Not sure if this is Meghan's case but she does have such slim feet/legs!

      Delete
    3. I have little toe inserts that are designed to help shoes stay snug, without being seen. They work especially well when I am wearing heels that have stretched a bit. The shoes still show a gap in the back, but I can wear them without stepping out of them.

      Delete
    4. Truly a mystery, as I never see photos of Meghan with her heel pulled out of the shoe, which would definitely happen to me with that much space. I do use inserts that stick on the shoe and wrap around the back of the heel and create space back there but hug onto my skin, keeping it in contact. I have to use them for any heel that I don't size down .5 of a size from my normal size, and maybe she uses those too because the toe fits correctly on one size but the ankle doesn't?

      Delete
    5. Zippy, I do the same thing. Meghan probably has really narrow heels (her legs are tiny too) so that's why it looks like the shoes have a gap.

      Delete
    6. I have had the same issue with heels over the years. My legs are similar to Meghan's and the older I get, trust me they are an asset in the wardrobe department. She looks great when wearing dresses/skirts and I love the length of her dresses/skirts. I've had to lower the shoe heels over the years but I do wear the petal inserts. I would like to see her wear some very fine hose in this weather that aren't obvious. I'm sure there are many brands available to her.
Love her outfit, the shoes, the gorgeous handbag! I do wish the lovely coat was tailored and she wore it closed outside. A final note, her hair style is nice, but doesnt withstand the weather well. I think there is a happy medium between hairnets and loose styles. And I love her hair when she wears a side part. It's more sophisticated in my opinion. Thank you Charlotte for all the information you provide.

    7. Oh, Anon 15:15 my dear old dad is the same; his feet are two different sizes. He always buys two pairs. But then, he only has maybe three pairs of shoes at any given time. I guess guys can afford that. It was a real problem in the Army, though. They couldn’t make anything work except getting two different pairs, and then they’d be left with two odd shoes. Apparently there’s no way to inventory that. :-)

As for Meghan, her feet are an odd shape, much wider across the toe box than at the heel. Jimmy Choo is not a good choice for her. As for how she keeps them on, I do not know and my best guess is that she has Magic Shoe Powers.

      Delete
    8. I do believe Meghan must have a triple A heel size. It is difficult to fit. She is really tiny. But, with that said she is a professional in her shoes. Reminds me of SJP in Sex in the City always wanting to be pumped up higher in her shoes. LOL

      Delete
    9. Thwre is a pic on dailymail where you can see her feet a bit out of the shoe

      Delete
    10. Looks amazing. No earrings though! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I looked up the heel thing and found ideas like using double-sided tape or applying hair spray to the soles! Yikes

      Delete
    11. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who noticed that!!! I kept staring at the close up of her shoe today thinking how big it looked on her foot! That would drive me crazy if I were the one wearing them.

      Delete
    12. If you are not wearing hose, a little piece of folded duct tape has worked with me to keep ankles slipping out of larger pump. If I’m wearing a pointed pump, I have to buy larger because I have a wide foot.

      Delete
    13. So I think it's safe to say... That Meghan's Super Power is "Keeping Any Pair of Pumps On"! & Better than what we mere mortals could do! :)

      Delete
    14. Karen thank you for the tip. I have wide feet and the heel is always too big and absolutely with pointed toes the fit is not easy.

      Delete
    15. This shoe conversation is cracking me up LOL. Seems no one can figure out how she’s keeping her shoes on her feet even with high heel wearing experience ourselves haha. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one puzzled by the inch of space behind her heel. I’ve always had a combo of envy and admiration for women who can wear heels this way and not breaking an ankle. My theory is that they glue their feet to their soles lol.

In any case what a nice surprise visit. My 15 year old self who was a Titanic geek geeked out at the visit to the titanic museum. Didn’t realize there was one in NI. I also quite like her outfit choices. Mostly just glad she incorporated color besides just neutrals. I would’ve thought people that were tired of so much neutrals would’ve been glad too. But I guess there’s no pleasing everyone. *shrug*. As for the messy bun, I’ve decided to just embrace it. Welcome it. Learn to love it. I think it’s here to stay. At least for the foreseeable future. Those who hate it may end up being perpetually annoyed every time it makes an appearance and that’s no way to live. :)

I'm happy for this surprise engagement! I hope we get a few more, especially since Kate just went on maternity leave.

  36. I can't get over the colors!! even the coat seems colorful. :) do you suppose the lack of hosiery is to keep a firmer grip in the shoe? i think that stockings could make the foot slide around a bit. i love every part of it.

  37. also, have you noticed how she wears rings between the base of the hand and the knuckle rather than all the way toward the base/ it's obvious for the ring son her right hand but she seems to wear the engagement ring the same way. i've grown to like it.

  44. I find that Meghan's wardrobe seems much more accessible for me to pull together similar outfits from my own closet than Kate's. Kate dresses like a Duchess, with more dresses and coat dresses. At this point, Meghan's look seems to incorporate more solid separates that are very chic and classy, but that many women may have similar versions of in their wardrobes. It is so fun that the two ladies have decidedly different, but both lovely, senses of style. I'm also thankful to have Meghan around now that Kate is gone on maternity leave!

  45. Who is this woman's orthodontist? I need teeth like that! Seriously gorgeous.

I love everything about this outfit. It's professional but modern and 'on-trend' but not trendy. You really can't go wrong with classic silhouettes in rich fabrics, like wool and cashmere. Adding some interesting colors that pair well together is just the cherry on top. If I had to pick a piece I'd take that coat, with those gorgeous rich shoes in second place. 48. Looks like Meghan got the 'royal memo' on clothing. Nice to see her in another skirt. The outfit looks great and for those concerned about the color, look at the kids in school uniform sitting beside them. The young lady is wearing green and the young man has a green & reddish/orange tie. :) I would like to see a pretty broach or pendant necklace become part of Meghans wardrobe when wearing a plain top to add a bit of pizzazz or should I say 'interest'. Her shoes do look a bit large but heels that height make your foot slide forward and leave a gap at the heel. I shudder to think of the foot & back problems these young women will have in the years to come. It appears the messy hair will just be part of her style for the time being and I think those fabulous handbags are going to be her signature. I wish I could afford those beautiful bags!

    1. I don't think she got any "royal memo", she likes to wear trousers sometimes and skirts at times, I think she will be mixing skirts and trousers, as most women do in these modern days.

Wow - looks like they had a lovely time together and good to see them out and about. The public loves them! I'm just not a fan of the bed head hair and lack of accessories. I feel this outfit could have benefited from maybe some boots, hair down and simple studs or even little dangle earrings. I know she's a minimalist, but accessories always make the outfit. Always. The hair though - just kills this entire look for me. I'm all for a messy bun - but this just - I can't.

I´ve just watched the video of Meghan and Harry with those "prosthetic limbs" (you can watch it over at the DM) - I had to laugh out really loud!! Meghan is so intently looking towards the woman talking, it really looks like she´s thinking: "I just won´t look at it, I just won´t", followed by "PLEASE, lunch, PLEASE, STAY D O W N ..." - she was really swallowing hard...LOL! I can´t blame her, though... ;-)))

  56. Oh Meghan, love the outfit especially the bag and shoes, but two comments, no tights in March dosnt look professional and The Hair!! The Hair!! if you are going for an up style use combs, clips or gel to slick back the stray hairs, it just looks sooo messy

  57. She looks lovely, this is my favorite outfit on her so far! But... I just don't understand the hair. I love a messy bun, but this doesn't even looked brushed on top! I just need a little more polish. Gorgeous ensemble though.

  58. Meghan is right on the cusp of perfection for being in the Royal family. She picks lovely pieces of clothes, but they don't quite go together. I love the colour scheme here. Very thought out as to the place she is visiting. But the jumper looks too casual for the skirt and make her look a little unruffled. Let's talk about her hair... I like a messy bun but the endless fiddling with it to tuck behind the ear is getting old. She needs to get this more polished. Great surprise to have a visit today. She is nearly there... can not wait to see her evolve is the role as a Duchess.

    1. Hi Zoe! I think that's the point of Meghan's style, pieces don't necessarily "go together". I think that so many of us are used to Kate's polished style and Meghan's "Suits" style that it's taking some time to realize that Meghan is not Rachael and her style is more relaxed and casual than Kate's. I know I find myself comparing her current hairstyles to how her hair was done while she was filming Suits, even during her off time interviews and such she still kept the "Rachael" look and I sort of keep expecting that but slowly I'm getting more used to her un-done look. While I don't think she needs to get more polished, I am looking forward to seeing her style evolve and seeing her grow in her role as a Duchess.

  59. THOSE SHOES!!! are to die for! I love everything about this look and so glad Meghan chose to wear her signature pencil skirt which goes well with her casual sweater. Meghan is good at mixing high low fashion but also classic/casual looks as well. I love her nod to Prince Charles by choosing a handbag created by someone who was helped by the Princes Trust. I hope that it signals greater collaboration between KP and Clarence House. Charles would be impressed because he likes it when his hard work is recognized. Good in-law points for Meghan.

    1. Agree her slim build really helps but also it looks a bit more finished because it really is not thrown together. 2. ali-I think that's sometimes called either a trendy look or trying too hard. I wrote in a comment at some point that so far has not appeared that Meghan may be trying to quash the "Rachel" image before establishing her royal wife style. She almost seems to be dressing the opposite of her style on Suits. As some have pointed out, it doesn't really match her private style pre-Harry either. That look at the UN was perfection, image-wise.
Perhaps we are seeing now a sort of an out with the old, before in with the new approach.1

The only thing about Harry & Megan that disappoints me is that he isn't going to be king, and she isn't going to be queen! 68. I enjoy Ms Markle’s style. In the USA, we dress “professional casual”. I applaud Ms Markle for staying true to her fashion sense, otherwise she would be out buying clothes to try and please everyone. I would hate that kind of pressure on myself. Anyway, I know once married, she’ll “up her game”, to some degree-but for now, I enjoy the relaxed look for ‘touring and walk abouts’. Ms Markle really isn’t a WORKING Royal yet. 1. HI Vicki - long, long story short - Ireland as a whole (so both the North and the South, AKA The Republic of Ireland) were under British colonial rule for a long time. Eventually the Irish people desired to be autonomous and gain their independence from Britain, much like America. As part of the process there was war and sectarian splits (Catholic v. Protestant; Remain (loyalists, often but not always Protestants) v. Secede (Nationalist/Republican, often but not always Catholics)). It was all very violent and sad. Until the late 1990's there was a period called "The Troubles" which involved domestic terrorism.

Flickers of The Troubles still remain, tensions still run high, and there may be some Republicans out there who might see a British Royal as a prime target for political violence. These are the "security issues" Charlotte and others are talking about with regard to this royal visit.

  71. We hear that Meghan is very deliberate in what she wears---I think the hair is done just the way she wants it to be done, and that wispy part is meant to frame her face. I sometimes read she is representing the Queen and should look more polished. She seems to suit the Queen, as well as the next king and then the next king, so I don't think that is a valid criticism. Kate has a perfect body and can wear form-fitting dresses and coat dresses---Meghan's is terrific but apparently looks best in the more draped clothes that she prefers. Perhaps Kate feels she must dress differently, or perhaps she just wants to. I have grown to think that Charles' vision of a streamlined monarchy is wise, which means that someday, Meghan will be the number 2 woman (maybe number 3 after princess Charlotte) and will essentially be representing herself. i hope we all get used to her hair (I love it and i love Kate's) and realize that they can't be the same.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think "perfect body" is in the eyes of the beholder, what may be considered perfect for some is not necessarily perfect for others. I think Meghan can still wear form fitting dress if she wants to, I think she just prefers the loose fitting clothes and in my opinion they look good on her, just as form fitting clothes looked good on her in Suits. She is a woman aware of her choices and exercises the independence to choose and I love her choices in clothes, she looks professional, modern, modest and stylish.

    2. Well said, Allison in US. I think the messy hair too is just fine on these casual walk-about, get to know people tours. It looks approachable. At the Commonwealth service it was polished and topped with a hat.

I'm reminded of that scene in The Crown when the Queen debut her new (and now signature) hairdo. Philip said it looked like a helmet. Couldn't she do something more like an actress and he named a few bombshells of the day.

Often hair and clothing substitute quite easily for armor. Meghan (and Harry) seem to be adopting a greater softness in their approach. They want to "make a difference" from the platform they've been given. That requires a great deal of effort from non-royal, non-aristocratic folks. Very often people are quite intimidated by the vestiges of power; therefore, I believe there will be a softening of the approach to the BRF's way of working in the world.

For the occasions which demand ceremony, they'll bring it on like no one else can. But in day to day interactions not as much. The days of the Queen Mum swanning around in the devastation in full glamour because she believed the people wanted to see it are done. Thanks in part to Diana, it's a new age for royals. It was time.

  73. Oh, lord, I just realised she’s honoring the ROI flag in NI. Had this happened in a year there would be a huge to-do about it. Luckily, she’ll be excused as not knowing better. But a huge fail for the KP advisers.

Did you ever think she is just wearing a green skirt and rust colored shoes with no real honoring of anything. People can find something negative in just about everything.

      Delete
    2. If you make it to be, the flag will have to be in a different and darker shades of green and orange . It may be a coincidence, or something may be cooking in the future. I believe Meghan is well aware of international affairs and diplomatic subtle messages not to cause problems

She cannot just wear a green skirt or make clothing choices now without thinking it through. If this was a few years ago, great offense might have been taken. I would have advised her to wear green shoes or dark boots , and not try all three flag colors.

MizBev, I think you are right that she is just wearing an outfit she likes. I get irritated when everything she wears is supposedly a nod to this or a nod to that. I don’t believe her clothes have to be making statements the whole time.
But in light of the history between ROI and NI the first thing somebody at KP should have told her when they planned the visit was to stay away from orange as not to offend anybody inadvertantly or be pulled into a silly shoe gate saga.

    6. MizBev, on this occasion I'm afraid I really don't think so - it's just too much of a coincidence that she was wearing orange, green and white on a visit to 'Ireland'. I believe she and her stylist were trying to do the royal flag dressing thing and made an honest mistake. Of course we don't believe that it was a deliberate snub to the North, Meghan is not the kind of person to offend anybody, but someone in the team should have stepped in and stopped her from making a diplomatic mistake.

The situation in Northern Ireland is better than it once was, but tensions are never too far from the surface even now. As Anon said, this wardrobe choice could have been made into a massive political deal if the press had chosen to. She and her team need to be really careful in sensitive areas like this - it's a bit like going to a Southern state in the US Civil War draped in a Yankee flag!

      Delete
    7. In my opinion, I think Meghan wore the colors she liked, I do not think that she was trying to wear some colors to match a theme of Northern Ireland and then made a mistake. I have not seen one article in the news where they imply that she did so because if that was the case (diplomatic error) I think Daily Mail would have been one of the first newspapers to report it instead they were reporting on body language. And I believe the reporters would have mentioned it, if this was the case.

    8. The reality of her situation, now and in the future once she and Harry are married, is that everything she does will be heavily scrutinized. It’s the same with Kate, and I’m not saying that to bring in any sort of comparison between the two women, but to just highlight the fact that Meghan is now in a similar situation as Kate. Meghan will be representing the royal family, and people are going to look at everything - symbolism in colors, hairstyles, cost of clothing, how many times things are re-worn, etc etc etc. Because she will be representing the royal family, people will just be hypersensitive to everything. She herself will be a symbol of the royal family and what the monarchy means in the U.K. It may not be a personal attack on her, but she’s becoming a part of something that’s so much bigger than she’s ever been in before, and people will be watching her in a way that’s she’s never experienced. I think she’ll ultimately do fine. She’ll make mistakes, but I think she will learn from them. I look forward to watching her grow in her new role.

I love Meghan's style. I always do. But girl, you HAVE to make your hair look more professional. These messy buns make an otherwise highly polished outfit look unpolished. That hairstyle is VERY L.A., we do it all the time here, but it doesn't work for a professional look. C'mon Meghan, you are SO put together, finish it off!

  76. Aside from the wispy hair I think she looks great. It’s a classic style that I would wear. I have no issue with her choice of color. If she wore it in a different order maybe but the 3 colors represent the following. Green for Catholics, Orange for Protestants and White for peace. Perfectly appropriate in my opinion to show support for such a situation in the north. Also the N Ireland national teams wear green.

  77. Meghan is a woman after my own heart! I love separates. My only quibble, well, actually two, the minimum accessories and the hair. That white sweater just begged for a statement necklace, and I hate to even mention this, but the fly aways were distracting. I don't blame her for putting her up. It probably allows her to take a break from all the straightening. I would actually like to see Meghan wear her natural hair.

    1. SDR, I understand where you are coming from, however believe me there is a reason why some women who have black heritage do not wear their hair "natural", I am one of those women- discussing natural hair for black women can be a very "sensitive" subject.

  78. Ok, I've changed my opinion! Something about observing them on this engagement today......... I agree & I believe they will probably hope to be pregnant sometime during their 1st year of marriage. I mean, she can so definitely do engagements through most of a pregnancy, like Kate did this year. Plus, that's not even counting the fact that she will likely be spared the HG Kate had! So I'm on board for a Baby as a Primary Priority! I mean "right away" means 9 months after they know they are going to have a little one! ..... lol :)

  79. I thought she looked lovely. Everything seems to fit well. The hair is still a bit of a let down to me, those messy buns don't look quite right for the sophisticated look she goes for.

She is definitely wearing her clothing instead of her clothing wearing her!!!! So happy she is staying true to herself and not just buying up bespoke items because of convenience!!! Please don’t change Meghan!!!!!

  83. In my opinion, this was a hit today. Everything looked in plcae except the usual issue with the hair. The shoes color looks like amber color, the green skirt cut is so smart especially for windy days, and the coat was just fine.

I don't know what is going on in UK climate, I have noticed over the years the women have a alot of sun spots not only on their faces, also on necks, legs, arms etc. Meghan has already started getting them. It is not her freakles; it is rather the UK type spots. People have them in other countries too, but the UK kind seems fast acting, more potent, spread all over the body, and starts at younger age.

There are not any Meghan Markle photos to be found with any strand of hair out of place when she used to live in States and Canada. She needs to find the right stylist for her hair in UK.

Sorry about my complaints of UK, but that was not the intention. Some cosmotologists have probably researched this. The first time I got a couple of them on my face, I saw a dermitologist who charged me per spot to remove them ( they were tiny small / he warned me that they will return, and they did). Over the years, Some lines of skin care diminish them and it is amazing. When I discontinue that product, they return.

Anon, this is an older photo of Meghan:
      http://revistaronda.net/meghan-markle-actriz-miembro-la-realeza-foto/
Definitely with dark spots on face and body... I don´t necessarily think it´s a UK thing, as people here in Germany have them as well.... :-)))
One of my relatives has very much Meghan´s skin type (she´s not bi-racial, btw!) and she´s had those spots for at least the last 50 years (that´s how long I remember her, her late husband was one of my godfathers) - and she´s been living in Switzerland all her life... ;-))))

I agree with the hair. There are lovely photos on the internet with perfect updos, more casual updos, all kinds of updos really, but with much less "hair all over the place" so-to-speak. I don´t mind the casual vibe of it, but the constant tugging behind the ear would drive ME crazy if I were Meghan.. :-)))

it’s very thoughtful of her to support local artists and regions with her handbag choices. Her hair wisps are still a big distraction from an over-all polished look.

  87. 🌸 Love Meghan’s whole outfit. Love it. Glad she did a repeat of the sweater. Hope we see more repeats. Love that she carried Charlotte Elizabeth Bloomsbury’s brand. What an amazing young woman.
I will put that brand on my list also. The quality is excellent. The price is too low. Too low, Charlotte Elizabeth. :)
I love Meghan’s chignon. I love chignons. I just hope she can find a mousse or spray to keep the strands back so she won’t have to fiddle around with them.
I thought she and Harry were relaxed and genuine, spontaneous and having fun. Loved that Meghan gave a natural, unguarded comment about needing the baby stuff sooner or later. Refreshing.
They came. They saw. They conquered. And all in a good way.
Charlotte. Again. Thank for all the many videos. And the best photos also.
Hi, Mr. Charlotte. :) (going to do a random shout out once in a while, in appreciation.xo)

  88. I thought, at first glance, that Meghan's skirt matched Harry's blue sweater, and I still think her shoes look burgundy rather than orange. I like the skirt. I don't like the partly tucked sweater, the flying coat, the too large and too high heels, or the messy hair. Messiness is a fad, and it needs to go away. A couple of the pictures show Meghan's hair nicely framing her face, and she looks so beautiful that way.

Harry and Meghan seem to have had a delightful day in Northern Ireland, and checked that visit off their list without incident. They are charming. I love the way they interact with the crowds, and Meghan is certainly gaining an education in things UK.

  89. Meghan is such a breath of fresh air, style-wise. I love the less studied look, and even the messy hair. I love Kate too, but these two ladies are so different, and I think that's great that each can kind of go her own way. The shoes in particular are gorgeous. I was fortunate to find Meghan's Victoria Beckham sweater in Norstrom's Rack last week here in CA for $200. I didn't know it was a Meghan sweater. I have to say, it is an incredibly luxurious feeling sweater. I have a lot of nice cashmere, and the VB sweater is sort of over the top and just feels so lovely. I am wearing it a lot as warm weather will be in CA before you know it. So good taste, Meghan, on the sweater. It is fab.

  90. To those remarking on the shoe size. Sometime during this past awards season there was an article about why actresses wear oversized high heels. If you look closely at the feet of actresses, you will always see that gap at the heel. The article explained that it is to enable standing for long periods of time without getting blisters. They do use cutlets or tape at the toes for stabilization.

I am so glad when I read through the comments that other people liked her look. Because I really don’t. Except the shoes, the shoes are gorgeous. As usual once she has taken her coat of it is better, it is just a pity that the majority of the proper pictures are taken outside.
And she has mixed up the pants from the last few engagements. Good for her to bring some variety and a bit of colour.

  93. What a lovely engagement.
I kind of like the look but it feels that she should have either changed the jumper or the coat. Both look great individually with the skirt and shoes but the clash with each other.
I too wish she would wear her hair less messy when it is in a bun. It is not about strains of hair to frame her face. I like that. But the small hairs on top of her head. Hairspray should fix that.

Interesting quote about the baby stuff. Normally royals are more vague to avoid instant pregnancy speculations after the wedding. But it confirms what a lot if people already assume. They want children and it is safe to safe to say they will start as soon as possible. This will have a great impact on how much we will see her working after the wedding. You never know how you are affected by a pregnancy so it might be very little. With that in mind they should be careful in how they present her in public. It would be sad to see her torn into shreds for being lazy like it happened with Kate.

Wow, I´ve just watched the video of them being on stage at Amazing the Space - the cheering - incredible. As my daughter said while watching the two arrive at "The Crown" in Belfast: "You´d think it´s someone like Rihanna appearing for some "well-in-advance-announced" event - not an unannounced visit by some royals! Wow!!" :-))

    1. Eve, I totally get you. There is a website "Belfast Telegraph" I watched that same video but they were entering the building with the youth, the way Harry held Meghan's hand and looked at her, on my gosh!! I enjoy watching those two so happy! My husband holds my hand every time we are in public, I used to be shy about it but he likes it, so now I indulge him. I think Harry likes holding Meghan's hand, he was reaching for her hand so many times in Northern Ireland and then I think she likes it too! So excited the wedding is a few weeks away!

  96. With Meghan, you have some people who absolutely love what she is wearing and some not so much and not just on this blog. I think that's real life, we all do not like wearing the same type of style of everything. I prefer Meghan's style - choosing different pieces and putting them together, sometimes pants (trousers), sometimes skirts/dresses it's fun and then for me it's practical as well. I look at Meghan and think well I could wear that coat or the jumper, maybe not the skirt, it looks good on her - her hips fill it in nicely, on me it would like a parachute, Lol! Overall for me - Meghan, is the version of modern and chic, while being professional and modest and this look in Northern Ireland, there's something about it, feminine, delicate, soft or is it just the person wearing it? I love it!

According to "Meghan´s Mirror", the shoes are the Jimmy Choo Romy in "Fire Velvet", see here: http://meghansmirror.com/product/meghan-markle-velvet-pump-jimmy-choo/
    or here:

So, looks more like a reddish brown....
    The Irish flag: http://www.nationalflaggen.de/flagge-irland.html
    Now, THAT´s orange, for sure!
Again, I guess the velvet is the tricky thing here. I once had blue velvet pumps and depending on the light, they were "playing nasty tricks on me", i.e. I wore a blue trouser suit and all of a sudden, they didn´t seem to match AT ALL, LOL!! They were lovely, extremely comfortable - but the colour differences depending on the light were driving me mad sometimes...
