Harry and Meghan's Homes: "Our Little Cottage" & A Country Retreat

With the royals' annual summer break upon us, I thought it a good time to visit a topic several of you mentioned in the comments recently: Harry and Meghan's homes. Where do they live? Is there any truth to the many rumours concerning their country home? What are the long term plans for their residences?

For the time being, the couple's London home is Nottingham Cottage, affectionately known as "Nott Cott" in the grounds of Kensington Palace. The cosy property boasts two bedrooms, two reception rooms and a small private garden. It was the starter home for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the early years of their marriage. Once they moved out, Harry decided to live there and is said to be incredibly fond of it. Apparently, he put his own stamp on the place by installing a hammock in the yard.

In a bid to get to know each other privately without media pressures, Nott Cott became the secluded love nest the couple needed to spend valuable time together and plan the future away from the public eye. When the time was right to propose, the cottage was just the place to do it.

Harry shared the following during the engagement interview:

'We had to sort of reverse the whole process and cozy nights in, in front of the television, cooking dinner with just the two of us by ourselves in our little cottage rather going out for dinner and being seen in public. So we, we reversed the whole process which is, it's provided different opportunities. And has made us a hell of a lot closer in a short space of time. That's without question. So you know if anybody else... maybe slow down to date, spend more time at home. But no, it's it's for us it's it's an opportunity to really get to know each other without other people, you know, looking, trying to take photos on the phones and that kind of stuff. That comes comes comes with it comes with the job comes the role.'

The cottage is 1,324 square feet in size.It stands near two other grace-and-favour houses; Kent Cottage and Wren Cottage. Nottingham Cottage was designed by Christopher Wren. Its name derives from Nottingham House, the residence of the Earl of Nottingham from which Kensington Palace was expanded by William III and Mary II. The house has been occupied by several people who have formerly been employees of the Royal Family. From her retirement in 1948, the house was given for life to Marion Crawford, the former governess of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. In gratitude for Crawford's service, Queen Mary, the princesses' grandmother, decorated the house with Victorian furniture and prints of flowers for her. Crawford described the house as a dream "of seasoned red brick...with roses round the door". Crawford left the cottage in 1950 in the aftermath of her selling stories about the Royal family to newspapers.

More from The Telegraph:

'Nottingham Cottage is one of the smallest properties within the grounds of Kensington Palace and was formerly the home of the Duke of Edinburgh’s private secretary, Brigadier Sir Miles Hunt-Davis, and his wife Gay. Princess Diana's sister Lady Jane Fellowes and her husband Sir Robert Fellowes also lived there.
Photographs of her former home in Toronto suggest that she favours a minimalistic, monochrome colour scheme with plenty of soft furnishings, coffee table books and floral arrangements. The American actress decorated it to "look like a California bungalow", and you can see how it looked while she lived in it on pictures she posted to Instagram. She wrote on her blog The Tig that the sunny decor helped her to stave off “seven Canadian winters.”
She has probably put her own mark on what had been, for four years, a bachelor pad. The Duchess of Cambridge is said to have redecorated it to her own taste when she first moved in.'

We've seen an abundance of rumours circulating about the possibility the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will move out of of their apartment to smaller lodgings and the Sussexes will take up residence in their stately 21 room apartment. It is located so close to William and Kate's Apartment 1A, they are linked by adjoining doors.

There's also been mounting speculation Harry and Meghan will make Clarence House their permanent London home when Charles becomes King. At this point neither report has been confirmed, with Kensington Palace telling the media the couple plan to stay at Nott Cott "for the foreseeable future".

All the senior royals have a country residence where they can escape the hustle and bustle of London and ensconce themselves in the countryside indulging their love of the outdoors. For the Queen it's Balmoral, located in the stunning Scottish highlands. Charles has his beloved Gloucestershire residence Highgrove and for the Cambridges, it's their rural Norfolk retreat Anmer Hall. It's been said for years, Harry has been considering options for his own scenic hideaway. Now, with Meghan by his side, it seems the couple have chosen Oxfordshire for the time being at least.

Several reliable reporters understand the couple signed a lease on a property in the Cotswolds at the beginning of the year. It is thought the bolthole is located in the Great Tew estate.

Located just over an an hour from London, the Estate encapsulates much of what might be considered the archetypal English Country Estate. Spring lambs playing in rolling grassland, oak woods with a carpet of bluebells and thatch cottages.

Reporter Omid Scobie said Meghan adores it there. "She's really fallen for the countryside".

The quaint, sleepy village of Great Tew has a village shop which is also a café and a parish church. Whilst the village is often described as one of the prettiest in England, Great Tew remains cloaked in its long history, from its Roman origins, through the Civil War to its ownership by one of the pre-eminent industrial revolution families.

The Sun reported the couple spent their last weekend before the wedding in Oxfordshire:

'They like to escape to the country for the weekend and the cottage is just perfect for them.” The friend added: “It’s very private, has a vast open-plan kitchen and dining area for Meghan to cook in and lots of large windows for the stunning views.”
Renovations have just been completed at the home which has also been made fully secure. A source told The Sun: “Blacked-out Land Rovers have been seen driving up to the property and a lot of security work has been done.'

The village is home to the Beckhams' estate as well as exclusive members' club Soho Farmhouse, where Meghan is said to have had her hen party. The club is set in 100 acres of countryside. Soho House consultant Markus Anderson is one of Meghan's closest friends.

Once the lease is up on the property, the couple are expected to move into their permanent country home. There's been speculation they will build a secluded mansion in the Cotswolds. However, it is most likely the Queen will offer Harry and Meghan a property. Most recently, it has been suggested, Her Majesty invited the couple to view Adelaide Cottage, nestled in the heart of the Home Park in Windsor. Adelaide Cottage was originally built for Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV, in 1831, using building materials from the Royal Lodge. In more recent times, it served as the former residence of Peter Townsend, the famous lover of the Queen’s late sister Princess Margaret. At this point, it remains just another rumour. I expect we'll see an exclusive from a seasoned royal reporter on the couple's definite plans over the next year or so. Below, a painting of the cottage from 1839.

************

We have a couple of other brief updates to share today. For those fond of Meghan's GOAT Flavia dress, the brand has released the dress in nude with frayed trims - identical to the bespoke piece the Duchess wore. It's available in UK sizes 8-18 on the website.

On Saturday, the wedding of one of Prince Harry's closest friends Charlie van Straubenzee and Daisy Jenks will take place in Surrey. It has been reported Harry will be Best Man. There's a very strong possibility we'll see Meghan there :)

  1. Thank you for the little update Charlotte. I love that H&M are loyal to their little cottage considering all the wonderful memories they have made there. It will be hard to let go when the time comes to raise a family. I believe that H&M would be happy living in a studio apartment as long as they were together. How lucky are they to know what is really important.

  2. I would love the Sussexes to move in next door to the Cambridges, because it suits my idea of a close-knit family. However, I just know that if Meghan and Harry take Apartment 1 at KP, then the media will try to make a great show of how they supposedly kicked the Gloucesters out, even though it wouldn’t be true. Anything for clicks, I guess.
Regarding the country home, I know it’s up to them, and not me because clearly I have nothing to do with it at all, but I almost think it would be better to not be in the middle of all the celebrities around Soho Farmhouse, just simply so people can’t accuse Meghan of being too “Hollywood” or whatever. But really, as long as they are happy, let them live wherever.

    1. I'm torn Anon23, while I agree with your points about the celebrities.... I almost wonder if that might be a perk for them, especially for Meghan (having moved so far from her friends) it could make it easier for her to keep in contact & see friends that come to use Soho Farmhouse! So I see that as a tick in the positive box for her. We shall see?

    2. Respectfully Anon23, I couldn't think of anything worse than living right next door to my in-laws regardless of how much I like them or how close we are. Imho, if H&M moved into Apt. 1 Meghan would forever be under her sister-in-law's shadow similar to the way Harry's always been under Williams. And who would want to live their life that way. Personally, I think the Adelaide Cottage would be a much better choice, it's close enough to London to pop over for tea and fun but far enough to allow H&M to set up their own life, their own way. But as you said, "as long as they are happy, let them live wherever."

    3. I agree Lauri. A little physical distance between the families (at least more than a connecting door!) would be a good thing IMO.

      Delete
    4. I agree lizzie and Lauri, I am sure they would like to have a bit of space. Lauri you mentioned below about most of the BRF not having two separate homes, I bet you are correct and that H and M will get one home and then use available space when needed when they are away from "home" as Anne and her family do. Guess where they have their large home will depend on where H and M want to live most of their lives and raise any kids.

      Delete
    5. Anon23, I think the media will find something to write about no matter what. Consider the issue with W&K wanting a normal family type kitchen in addition to the "default" commercial variety in the basement of their apartment. My goodness!

I also believe that Kate/Meghan articles will appear for many, many years to come regardless of where H&M live. Consider the Diana and Sarah years. (And A&S did not live in KP; they had an apartment in BP.)

I do understand the concept of good fences even when relatives are involved, lol, but I think the Gloucester's apartment is perfect for H&M because it's the only other KP apartment with a private (and attached) garden. Ideal for family life...

Also, I cannot imagine Harry not having an apartment in London, while his brother does. All senior royals have a place in the country and one in London, and I believe that H&M, too, will need one of their own. A London base where they can work and spend time with their family. Let's face it, we're talking about the grandsons of the Queen, and sons of a future king. In other words, yes, H&M will have an apartment in KP and a house in the country. ;-)

      Delete
    6. I agree royalfan Harry and Meghan likely will have a London residence and maybe it will be a home just a connecting door away from W&K's. I love my relatives & get along fine with them. But it wouldn't be my cup of tea to live next door (and I don't share an employer with any of them!) but maybe it would be what these couples want. And of course they don't need to worry about the usual things that lead neighbors to squabble like yard maintenance and with the size of the KP "apartments" noise isn't likely to be a problem. Plus H&M may base themselves in the country more than at KP as W&K did at Amner. I was trying to think though, how long has it been since Will and Harry have lived so close together day in and day out? I know the Cambridges have been in residence at KP since the end of last summer and Harry and then Harry and Meghan have been living at Not Cot but before that....Harry was in the Army until 2015 including serving in Afghanistan and Will's RAF service based him in Wales until 2013. They had different educational paths with Will attending St. Andrew's. Their time at Sandhurst and at Eton may have overlapped. Still, I wouldn't have thought they would have roomed together either place. So they probably haven't lived in such close proximity since childhood, right?

      Delete
    7. Lizzie, when H&M's engagement was announced, I recall William's comment about Harry no longer raiding his (William's) fridge and I believe the two have spent more time together than we may realize. As their schedules permit, naturally.

I do agree with you; it wouldn't be my cup of tea, but I think the brothers (couples) can see each other as much or as little as they wish. And once H&M have children, I suspect that the brothers would want their children to be as close as they have been over the years.

      Delete
    8. Right royalfan. Since last summer when W&K moved to KP I expect they have spent a fair amount of time together. But after W&K's engagement was announced Harry said something about "looking forward to getting to know Kate" so I'm not sure how much time they had spent together before that except during childhood and school holidays when they were adolescents. I do think they are emotionally close, I'm just sure how geographically close they've been as adults except during this last year.

      Delete
    9. I think that they'll make do with their cottage because in a few years the Queen will doubtless pass and everyone will shuffle up a residence. Charles will move to Buckingham palace, K+W to Clarence House which would leave 1A open for MH to be their permanent residence. I image MH will start their family soon and will need more space eventually, but I think the shuffle sounds the most logical.

Also I"ve been reading thoughts about decor -- none of us has any idea what the decor of the private apartments is like for any of these people. Why are we so sure that Kate has gone "traditional English" instead of some other style in her bedroom, family room etc? The posed photos we've seen are largely in official public rooms, not their private quarters. It just makes no sense to condemn what we're guessing Meghan might do when we have no idea what other royals do either!

      Delete
    10. Lizzie, perhaps that was simply Harry's way of welcoming her into the family. Short and sweet without saying anything that would be debated in the press. I would understand that! :-)

      Delete
    11. Emily, the shuffle makes sense if we consider rank and residences. I'm just not sure if the cottage would be adequate if Harry and Meghan have a baby and continue to expand their family. Another factor I have in my mind... I'm not convinced that William and Kate will want to leave Kensington Palace. I don't know if William would want to move his family to Clarence House where Camilla has been Lady of the house. I say this based on her role in his mother's life. Also, while I see Charles and Camilla moving to Buckingham Palace, again I'm not so sure about William and Kate. Their KP apartment offers them a lot more privacy than BP ever could.

      Delete
    12. I thought it had been reported Charles didn't intend to move to BP when he becomes king?

I don't think Not Cot with its two bedrooms will work if H&M have a baby. Even 1. Obviously they'll have a live-in nanny. (At least it's obvious to me. If nothing else they'll need regular reliable childcare available for work times.) So unless there is an unneeded room like a den that could be converted to a nanny's room, a two bedroom residence won't work.

      Delete
    13. It has been. I think it's been said that he's thinking of keeping BP open year-round. As far as I know, no one liked that place. Philip didn't want to move there and Diana had words about it too. Don't believe Will and Kate have plans to leave KP anytime soon either.

      Delete
    14. I also think that W&K will want to stay at KP for as long as possible, if not permanently!

      Delete
  3. I just visited Oxfordshire and it is so wonderful! I can see how someone would like it.

I hope they do build their own place eventually. :) A nice new place with Harry's private funds would be great if possible. The old places are so beautiful and full of history and charm but if I had the money he has through the inheritance from his mother I would be so very tempted to build a new place but with old stylings to fit in - especially in Oxfordshire.

Thank you Charlotte! Nice post :)

    1. At first that sounded so unusual for me, with regards to the RF & how they choose their Country Homes. However, after watching the Soho Farmhouse video, I can definitely imagine them building new!! Great kitchen & possible a pool & tennis courts etc. Time will tell! :)

    3. The Queen sponsored a new home built for Andrew and Sarah. Summerhill? I believe it was on property already owned by HM.

      Delete
    4. Anon 5:18, the Summerhill is ringing a bell. I have not googled it but I think they sold it after the divorce? Or was it ever finished? I will need to look it up again.

    5. Sunninghill Park has a rather sad and controversial history.

      Delete
    6. Yes, royalfan. I got the name confused with a famous school/educational format. Andrew's alleged involvement using royal connections in promoting the selling of the house, years after the divorce, was a big story for awhile- the controversial aspect. It was left empty to literally rot before it was finally sold and destroyed to make room for a new house-the sad part. I looked it up. I had not realized that Beatrice and Eugenie lived there for about ten years after the divorce. I believe it was built on land owned by the Crown Estate so I don't quite understand how a private individual could purchase it.

  4. Wishing them every happiness in whichever lovely house they make a home. It must be so exciting for them to have so many lovely options. As an American, the Great Tew must be a shockingly peaceful and romanic place for Meghan to make a home. There is nothing like that here and I can understand the draw to it.

  5. I think it will be so fun to see where their homes end up being and how many they have:). The cottage is I am sure already too small so will they keep a spot in London or locate full time elsewhere and keep a small spot in the city or keep two big spots like Catherine and William, one in the "country"and one in London. I love seeing all the homes and the makeovers of the homes so can't wait to see. i so hope someone in the family loves Balmoral as much as the Queen and keeps that going.

  6. i think the interesting part is that both William and Harry have started their marriages in smaller houses without live in staff. I am sure that lack of privacy contributed to the Prince of Wale's problems with Diana, however he was so used to having valets and other household servants around all the time that he probably can't manage without them now. it is noticeable that former members of their staff are still leaking details of their marital discord whereas we never hear any of that from domestic staff working for William and Harry.

    3. I think the problem was that Charles‘ heart was with another woman. If it was down to have live in staff around we would have many more divorced royal couples in Europe.

  7. What a lovely post! I suppose the Nottingham Cottage must be really cosy if they are still living there. Oh but the countryside, I hope the English people won't mind me saying but I was taken away the countryside much much more than London or the cities. No wonder Meghan fell in love it... and Cotswolds.

Time will tell what residence they got from the Queen, which must be really surreal for Meghan. Anyway, Adelaide Cottage looks incredibly lovely too.

Thanks for the post! It was highly entertaining!

  8. Hello Charlotte, I'm in London for filming!! I flew over from the states yesterday, arriving last night. I'm lounging in bed, as we have a long "Night 'Shoot'" Tonight in the city!! My driver picks me up @7pm & I won't return to my Hotel until 5:00am!! then a recovery day & then 5 days into late night & that's week #1!! :) I will be popping out soon to shop around Sloane Square, High St. etc. However, I of course had to check into The Blog on my first day here!! :) I heard, from a fellow traveler (who was en route to The Cotswolds) about H&M being there? I of course had to check in with you & here I see that it is true!:) I'm not sure how much exploring I'll be able to do outside of the city, during my time here. However, I will be ending my stay with a trip to my cousin's Country Estate!! Quite excited about that!! They host Historically Accurate Edwardian Shoots & their Chef prepares the catch for elegant long table dining (ala Downton Abbey) for their guests! That will be quite a treat!! :) So glad to be back here, but would have loved to be here when The BRF was in town!! :) Loving the Heatwave!! :( I have to be in black head to toe & in black jeans while "On Set"...... wish me luck with that!! lol :) xo

    1. Hello Becca,

It's definitely true they are renting a country home in the Cotswolds. They are both expected to attend the van Straubenzee wedding on Saturday in Surrey. After that, I expect they'll take a summer holiday somewhere, although it's entirely possible they will return to London first.

I hope you enjoy your visit and enjoy some off-duty time to explore :)

Does your cousin open this experience to the public? I would love love love to experience that classic Edwardian country house visit and all its trappings!

Hi Becca, that sounds so exciting, thanks for sharing with us!
I think it would be really nice if Harry and Meghan renovated and lived in a bigger apartment at KP when they have children, close to William and Kate! Then I wish for them to choose a really happy spot for their country home. It is good that they can rent at the moment, to be sure where they would want to choose a spot! Whilst Windsor is beautiful, it is full of tourists, especially in the summer, and still very close to London. I hope they choose a more secluded spot, where they can just be 'normal' and their children can roam as free as possible. My five cents....

    7. Oh it's so wonderful to hear from all of you & to be here!! :)xo So I'm awake but having a nice "lie in" as I prep for 5 straight "day to night shoots" (my Driver picks me up @2:00pm to get me to "Set" & I won't return until after Midnight.) So those days at least lend themselves to a bit of shopping & walking in the a.m. That's why I chose this location so I have lots to walk to for quick shopping & dining options. I was walking in Chelsea last night going to a pub for dinner & thinking of you all as I passed (& window shopped) at all of the brand shops that we talk about here on MAM/DKB! :) I saw lots of goodies at Links of London, Hobbs, LK Bennet etc. I was wishing I had a "Cheat Sheet" of when, what & where Kate & Meghan wore different items & by whom! So many favorites over the years & now I get to shop in person, touching & feeling the items compared to just seeing them online! I really want to make it to Mulberry! :) Also, I'm so excited to find some cute items for my Granddaughters (including our latest addition, a newborn little girl! :) So that makes 4 girls for my Daughter! :) Again, trying to remember brands etc for the kids too!
      Ok Now To Respond:

Charlotte - I can Not emphasize enough how much more fun this trip is knowing so much I've learned from The Blogs about Shops, Brands & all sorts of Cultural & Local Places & Things to do that I've read about on both DKB & MAM!! My Driver has become well versed about pointing places out to me that I ask about (I have a whole list of places that I've learned about from W&K, H&M's Engagements! I almost squeezed passing The Royal Marzden Hospital!!! lol :) (Not the usual Tourist Attraction!!) Luckily I've ticked all the boxes of the usual places to visit or tour while on past trips with my family! So this trip is all about Me!! lol :) That & lots of work, but that's great too! I'm working with Such an Amazing Cast & Crew!! Plus, we are shooting in all these Amazing locations all throughout the city! Thank you Charlotte for all that you teach us through your Blogs!!! :) xoxo

BethW7372: Hi, I'm here shooting the last "Filming Block" of a feature film (looking forward to being able to tell you all more about it when I can.) It's very special & I think it will be of interest, especially with "Heads Together" in mind, as well as so much of the work that W&K, H&M work on!! It is a UK Film, but will also be seen in the states! As you know films are shot out of sequence & this one has been filmed over the past 2yrs! (it's crazy how long a film can take to be made!) This trip I'm here for the final "Block of Filming" & then We Wrap!! Whooo! Hooo!! The Whole Cast & Crew Will Definitely Be Out At A Pub After That Last Day!!! lol :) So a "Block of Filming" is when we cluster together Scenes to be shot, based on when certain Actors are available! This last block we have had several U.S. Actor/Actresses over to Film!! It's a film that was Cast with a look towards a Global Audience! I love working in Production! After we Wrap it goes into Post-Production & I begin working with The Team on what comes next, which is laying the foundation for promotion & release. It's a lot of massaging & navigating to create interest & determine the best plan for U.S. Festivals (Hopefully Sundance!!) There are many others (some smaller) that are also "Oscar Qualifiers". It's all very involved, but it's a joy when working with great people & when being so passionate (as I am) about the film & the story! :)

    8. florida & Frances, I'm sooo excited to spend time with my cousin, her hubby & sweet little daughter! They also have a place here in Mayfair, so she & I will be meeting up for Tea (while she's in the city) then after we wrap I will take the Train out to their Country Estate in Suffolk & stay for the remainder of my time, then taking a car service back into London to fly out of Heathrow! I Can't Wait!! Much of our family has been over & stayed with them & loved it!! As with many of these Estates, they have a business component. They host these Edwardian Shoots as a business venture! They even have an airplane strip on the Estate, as many of the Business Men etc. can fly in for these weekends! I know her Father was telling me that he found spending time with The Games Keeper the most fascinating aspect for him. So I'll have to share more once I've been there! :)

Mimi & Royal Watcher: I too agree & hope they do choose a place nice & far out in the countryside! The Cotswolds have always seemed charming & with The Soho Farmhouse there, it does avail some social options for Meagan with her old friends! I agree that Windsor wouldn't seem to be getting far enough away! If things had fallen through with going to Suffolk, I had planned to go to Windsor. Now it's something to save for next time! :)

    9. Frances, Thank you for that wonderful tip! It's always fascinated me with it's rich history related to the Royal Family (& The Battenberg/Mountbattens). I'll have to save it for a next trip! I'm hoping to still work in a trip to the V&A Museum & KP for The Diana Exhibit. My daughter saw it in February & loved it. She brought me home a lovely "Diana Tea Cup" which I used while watching The Royal Wedding! :) xo

Royalfan, how exciting to go to Scotland by sea - on the royal yacht Britannia - so romantic even! That would be my preferred way to travel for sure.

    4. Thanks for the answers. Going by Yacht would be fun.

    8. I'm glad you appreciated the photos Ali because they made me feel very old.😊😉😀😁😃 I was 3 years younger than Diana when I started following her in 1981. And here I am following her sons' wives. Yikes!

Thank you for the photos royalfan, they are precious! I think I am about the same age as you. I also started following her around 1981, read every magazine at the hairdressers, loved her dresses, tried the hairstyle.. Wondered how she could have married someone so much older.. yes, here we still are, still about the stories and the fashion. It has actually provided to be a learning environment for royal history! 😊

    10. Royalfan, Great photos, thanks. I've never seen either before. I especially liked the one of the family grouping. '

  10. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe all the members of the royal family have a London home and a country home. Anne has Gatcomb Park, the Wessex's have Bagshot Park and Andrew has the Royal Lodge and the chalet in Switzerland that he and Fergie purchased. As far as I know Anne and the Wessex's stay at St. James Palace or BP when they have business in London but with exception of C&C and W&K, none of them have 2 large homes.

    1. The senior Royals all have two homes, including one in London; and of course, the Cambridges have their children in school there , so it only makes sense. I never thought to ask but I don't know where Lady Louise and Viscount Severn attend school.

  11. I love the charm and coziness of cottages (although I realize that cozy is a relative term when one is talking about a ROYAL cottage). Does anyone recall the movie "The Holiday"? Well, I would choose the cottage in a heartbeat! And given a choice (don't I wish!) I would do likewise at KP. :-)

    1. Royalfan, I love the movie, "The Holiday." The cottage is mega charming, but it appeared to be tiny and not a place to raise a family. It was most certainly a place for one.

    2. Laura, definitely a cottage for one. :-)

    4. Thanks, Royalfan for the link showing the cottage. Perhaps it could house two people, but certainly not any more. I had no idea that the exterior was not really a house, but rather a temporary structure created for the movie. Yes, Becca I too have lost count of how many times I've seen this film. For those who haven't seen it, do yourself a favour and try to view it. Even reserve it at the library.

  12. Thank you for this lovely little report, Charlotte. I so wish Harry and Meghan well, and hope they will have the freedom and privilege to do good in the world in their lives together. They seem such exceptional human beings!

  13. Charlotte, thank you for clearing up the rumors! I, for one, thought moving into Apt. 1 was a 'done deal' with the Glouchesters offering to move out. Years ago I had the privilege of visiting a few countryside areas of the UK and fell in love with each one. I'm sure where ever H&M choose to reside will be spectacular.

  14. Thank you Charlotte for this blog. It is a delight and a haven after the Daily Fail.

  15. All of their options are lovely and exciting. Hard to imagine how overwhelming it must feel for H&M... so many choices!

My husband and I have been talking about someday getting an RV that we leave at a campground near our favorite state parks, where we can hike, kayak, etc on weekends. We love the thought of having our own little country escape. So it's a similar thing, but on a much (much much!) smaller scale. It's helped me to understand what it's like to have that option. No telling when we'll do it, but someday.

W&K's apartment... why is it in two sections? A small portion of it appears to be on the other side of a courtyard.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think I remember reading something about the rooms across the courtyard are used as "public" rooms. This may be where they have conference rooms ect.

      Delete
    2. 14:27, yes, I believe I read that it is office space.

      Delete
    3. Anon, that's was my impression too. I think that's where those rooms are that we often see in pictures when they are having "meetings"!

      Delete
    4. I’ve always been so confused about the layouts of the apartments in KP because the maps will usually have different spots outlined, depending on the publication. Some don’t have the spot across the courtyard attached and some do. It is the same with Apartment 1- I’ve seen it outlined a couple different ways. It would make sense for meeting space across the courtyard, and I want to say that maybe I’ve read that before somewhere, but I also seem to remember that Diana’s old apartment was made into meeting spaces as well. I’m old and my memory is horrible.

Great post, Charlotte, thank you! I didn't follow The Tig - I wasn't aware of Meghan's existence before she and Harry became a news item - so I don't know what her Canadian home looked like, but I certainly hope she doesn't turn any of the cottages in question into a Californian bungalow...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Actually, I can't remember how I found it, if Charlotte had a link here or if I saw it in the news? But when her place in Toronto was on the market they had pics online! It was "light airy Yet cozy". I wouldn't say exactly all modern, but it didn't strike me as "California bungalow". Her neutral palette was rooted in Grey!

      Delete
    2. There were also some touches added to the staging of the apartment by the rental agent, apparently, that played on the fact that Meghan had lived there. I recall a Union Jack pillow, among other items scattered about. However, she isn't the first celebrity to be exploited by others

  17. As a point of information a California bungalow is a style of home. The decor in many is worthy of a spread in Architectural Digest. Let us not judge what we are not knowledgeable of or different from what we choose. Past photos of Meghan's home in Canada that have appeared in The Tig were beautiful and very well appointed. Beautiful peonies and lovely books and accessories along with her beloved boys (dogs) spoke of a house decorated with love.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I remember seeing Meghan’s rental home listed, and it had been decorated by the vendors in a grey palette. It was very modern. Meghan had decorated in a white palette, and she had obviously rented the house unfurnished. I imagine she would have shipped, stored, or sold her furnishings. Meghan’s decor would have been fine in the Mediterranean or holiday home, or even an English country home. It was lovely. It wouldn’t be the traditional English chintz type of look, though.

    1. A home is what a couple makes of it. Most people maybe foreign to a country and they can bring things that remind them of home, so there could be some Californian or Toronto pieces thrown in. I think what matters is there is love, joy, comfort and all those other things you want in a home.

      Delete
  19. Speaking of country homes, I read an article in Vanity Fair today that says that Harry is concerned about the “hysteria” surrounding Meghan so they’re retreating into the countryside more and more and spending more time in their rented home on the Great Tew Estate. The article also quotes Richard Palmer who says that reporters are being kept farther away from the Duchess than they were before the wedding. Who knows if this is all true or not, but I understand Harry wanting to protect her; I also know after they made it known about Meghan wanting to be very active and hitting the ground running before the wedding, some people are starting to feel it was just a lot of talk.
Now, I understand people may get upset about this, and I’m not saying I personally feel this way, I’m just bringing the subject up. They are newlyweds and it is summer break after all. This is traditionally the time of year when the royals aren’t active anyway.
I think I’m just getting more frustrated at the lack of PR sensibility around the whole thing. I don’t have the answers though, so please don’t anyone feel like I’m trying to tell them what to do. I’m not.

    1. Anon23, yes, this is traditionally the time of year when the Royals enjoy some quiet time. I also happen to think that the timing is ideal for them to deal with the in-law situation.

And personally speaking, I don't think friends speaking on her behalf will be helpful in the long run. It simply gives the papers a new headline and keeps it going. My two cents anyway.

    2. meghan has hit the ground running. Woah it's only been a couple of months. She has done a lot for a newbie royal. No offense.

    3. Royal 👑 Watcher4 August 2018 at 13:46

This reminds me of the time when Kate was a new royal. Everyone wanted a piece of her. Then summer hits, the royals go on their annual holidays, and they (untrue) rumours fly. Meghan has done so well in her first few months. I think they are simply continuing with royal protocol.

      Delete
    4. @anon 2:37 - I’m not offended because I didn’t say I felt that way. Just bringing up a topic for discussion.

      Delete
    5. Comparatively, she has hit the ground running since the engagement was announced. If people were expecting speeches, solo engagements, and big projects already then that's their own fault for being unrealistic.

And as ROYALFAN said this is the time of year when royals slow down. It's a made up story that goes along with current events to feed bored people who don't know better. That's the truth for any tab, and, yes, I consider Katie a tabloid writer. There simply isn't enough information about public figures to make the majority of stories about them true or newsworthy, so they make things up (sometimes with bits of truth added in) to keep the public fed.

      Delete
    6. El- Yes, that’s why I stated in my first post that it’s the slow time for the royals. For those that think she’s not doing enough yet, all the other working royals have also decreased their work during this time.

  20. I would enjoy the Great Tew. Thank you, Charlotte for accurate info on the residences and properties of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Re the media, reporters have to come up with some angle on a story even when nothing is happening. It’s called a “slow news day” and lately, there has been nothing really exciting to report. So, the reporters just do “media spins” on old articles. For really honest reporting, I check out “Mad About Meghan”. Thanks for your integrity, Charlotte.

  27. Thank you for your two Duchess blogs. I feel for the first time since you began reporting on Duchess Kate, that I need to leave a comment. As an American, I am also concerned regarding the fatherly attacks Meghan has had to endure. I believe she will do her best, and hope she has the emotional fortitude to suffer through. I also empathize with Prince Harry, in that he has taken on a feisty American several years his senior. I find it ironic and encouraging that the Royal Family have circled their wagons around Meghan, and seem to sincerely adore her. Here's hoping the newlyweds have the strength to create a happy and fulfilling life together. Time will tell. Again, thank you for your exceptional blogs. I try and tune in as often as possible.
