Birthday Girl Meghan in Club Monaco for Society Wedding!

On her 37th birthday, Duchess Meghan celebrated the day in Surrey with Prince Harry and attended the wedding of Charlie van Straubenzee and Daisy Jenks.

The royals traditionally take their summer break in August and disperse to their country retreats for the month. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reportedly been enjoying time in their Cotswolds bolthole over the past week. It is anticipated the couple will take a romantic holiday later this month. Afterwards, they plan to spend several days at the Queen's Scottish estate, Balmoral, before resuming their programme of duties in the autumn. Before all that, Prince Harry had the very special role of best man to play at today's wedding...

When the Duchess stepped out of the car she was warmly greeted. According to The Mirror: "Scores of wellwishers sang ‘Happy Birthday to You’ and called out ‘Happy Birthday’ as the Duchess of Sussex arrived at the wedding."

Meghan was accompanied by an elegantly dressed blonde lady.

Afterwards, she mingled with guests outside the church before the ceremony began. She was spotted chatting to Harry's cousin Celia McCorquodale and her husband George Woodhouse. Harry and Meghan attended the couple's Lincolnshire wedding in June.

The van Straubenzee family have a long history with the royals. Harry has been close friends with the groom Charlie since they were children at Ludgrove prep school together. Both William and Harry were Usher's at the 2013 society wedding of Charlie's brother Thomas to Northumberland Heiress Melissa Percy. Sadly that union was short lived, with the couple deciding to go their separate ways less than three years later. Thomas is Princess Charlotte's godfather. A third brother, Henry, who attended school with Harry, died in a car crash in 2002, aged 18. Several years later William and Harry became patrons of a memorial fund created in his memory. Harry and Charlie were very much known as 'two peas in a pod' and were often described as "eternal bachelors" until 2016 when Harry met Meghan and Charlie, Head of UK Financial Intermediaries at an advisory company, fell for society video maker Daisy Jenks. Indeed, Harry considers Charlie such a close confidant, he asked him to join William in toasting him and Meghan during their Frogmore House reception. According to The Sunday Times, Charlie teased Harry when he was acting as dorm monitor at their school. "All I wanted was a cuddle from my mummy," he reportedly said. "Instead Harry nicked my teddy bear and chucked it out onto the roof. Ladies and gentlemen, I ask you, how can you put someone in charge of a dorm when that someone is worse behaved than the whole dorm combined?" Harry will no doubt be looking forward to repaying the favour during his reception speech :)

Harry and Meghan with guests after the ceremony.

The royals have an incredibly tight-knit circle of friends, and the weddings of those friends provide one of the few opportunities to see them in a social capacity rather than on duty. Meghan has very much embraced those closest to Harry; it's been reported they love nothing more than hosting relaxed dinner parties for friends in the Cotswolds. It's the second wedding the Sussexes have attended since their own May nuptials; in mid-June Meghan accompanied Harry to the Lincolnshire wedding of his cousin Celia McCorquodale to George Woodhouse.

The wedding was held at the picturesque church of St Mary the Virgin in Frensham.

The church has been a centre of worship for over 750 years. It was built in 1239 when the earlier church near the river was abandoned due to flooding. The chancel is the oldest part of the building; the tower was added in the 14th century and the north aisle was built in the 19th century.

The happy couple were photographed after the ceremony. The bride looked stunning in a strapless floral gown. As to the the choice of flowers? A bouquet of daisies for Daisy!

The elated newlyweds made their way to the reception in romantically non-traditional style. It was a beautiful country wedding; the couple looked delighted, and of course it was a lovely treat to see Harry and Meghan today!

Meghan selected the $328 color-block Club Monaco Shoanah dress for the wedding (with many thanks to an Anonymous poster).

The pretty dress is described as: "A case for pleats. Hundreds of sharp folds and clean, modern colorblocking give even more movement to an airy dress. For breezing through the week and lingering in the weekend." As of writing the piece is available in most sizes on the Club Monaco website.

Meghan has long been a fan of the popular brand which was launched in Canada in 1985. The first store in Toronto still exists today. Today, the high-end casual clothing retailer is owned by Polo Ralph Lauren with 140 locations worldwide. We saw Meghan in their Sinthea dress for a special reading of the pilot episode of Suits at the ATX Festival last year. She wore their burgundy velvet Tay dress on Christmas Day.

UPDATED ID: It turns out Meghan's belt is the Miu Miu Knot-Tied Belt (with thanks to Anne).

Meghan wore a straw hat from Philip Treacy's SS18 Collection (with thanks to Perth Fashion).

Meghan wore her Aquazzura Deneuve Pumps. Made in Italy, the stiletto heels are described as "A pert bow perched at the back ties together the chic detailing of a pointy-toe pump featuring side cutouts and a super slim stiletto." They retail for $750 at Nordstrom.

The Duchess carried the Kayu Anna Straw Clutch. It's available at ShopBop.

Meghan accessorised with her Shaun Leane Diamond Tusk Bangle. It's also available in rose gold at FarFetch.

Vanessa Tugendhaft confirmed the Duchess wore her Parisienne earrings. Below, a photo of Meghan wearing them at the Queen's Young Leaders Awards.

And completed the look with a pair of Linda Farrow sunglasses (with thanks to Anne). A similar pair (with a clear lens) are available at ShopBop.

In a 2016 piece for The Tig, Meghan wrote: "My mom has always said that birthdays are your own personal New Year. Your own chance to make resolutions just for yourself and what you prognosticate for your year ahead." Her birthday wish? She reveals: "More surprises, more adventure, more opportunities to grow, more days filled with giggles and cheeky jokes, more delicious meals, and more inspiration. Always more inspiration." At the time Meghan was enjoying a blossoming relationship with Harry. She continued: “I am feeling so incredibly joyful right now, so grateful and content that all I could wish for is more of the same.” It's been quite the year for Meghan, and 37 promises to be equally exciting. The Duchess, who shares a birthday with the late Queen Mother, has much to look forward to as a royal; the coming months will be filled with milestones. Personally, it is very likely it will mark the year the couple announce they are expecting their first child. In her aforementioned piece for The Tig, Meghan expressed her wish for adventure. She is certainly on the adventure of a lifetime right now. Not only did she find her prince, but she's been catapulted into an entirely new life. Meghan's journey thus far has no doubt been an unforgettable one filled with wonderful moments, it has also presented challenges and painful days too (in no small part owing to the despicable behaviour of family members), but she's handled it all with aplomb and carried on. I'm very excited to see what the next twelve months hold for the Duchess.

Happy Birthday Meghan!

  1. It looks like a casual dress code, and Meghan looks adorable in this first shot. Love the hat!! I'm glad to see her out and hope she has a wonderful birthday, surrounded by a new family and free of the bullying of her bio family.

I agree, Philly! Happy Birthday, Duchess Meghan!

    6. From what I can see, she looks great. I think the dress looks navy blue also, not black. I like navy in the daytime in summer. Everyone doesn't have to wear pastels/florals to look nice. In fact I went to a daytime wedding (American) last summer and the 3 adult bridesmaids wore navy and carried white flowers similar to the bride's. It looked very classy and the bride definitely stood out in her white gown.

    7. I do hope she's having a great birthday and she's looking super happy and quite pretty, but I still wouldn't wear black to a daytime wedding.

Here I was thinking it's one if her top 3 looks ever. I think it's perfect for the event. I might have changed up the accessory colors though.

    10. There was another lady there in black and white. It is the same dress that Meghan wore when she went to the pre-Christmas luncheon at Buckingham palace to meet the Queen's family. There were two ladies with the same outfit at Meghan and Harry's wedding in the same outfit. Also one of the actors from Suits had on a black dress with navy sleeves at the Royal wedding. The dress is fine.

    11. How about we let everyone have an opinion. Zipzipzippy has every right to disagree with the attire. I didn't like the dress for a summer wedding either. But I respect all of you who do. Agree to disagree instead of questioning each other.

    12. @anonymus15:52 and how about accepting not everyone has to praise her style? And why wishing her a happy birthday on a website she probably doesn’t read/know exists?
I like the style. Much better than her last wedding guest outfit. That said- the colour blocking makes it fine in my eyes as I agree dark navy or black are more for mourning. And while I know that those colours have been very trendy in weddings in the last years I still don’t think they fit the occasion.

    13. C, I didn't say she has to praise her style, how about wishing someone well on their birthday before rushing to critic. Some people did the same thing on their wedding, could not even say "Congrats" but rushed to say they did not like the gown. Wishing someone well is good manners, some people on this website love to talk about Meghan's manners and "inappropriateness" yet they don't practise what they preach, my opinion.

  5. I assume HRH DuSu was keeping it low key so as not to outshine the bride? The shape and cut of the dress is gorgeous: but in light Summery colours, please! Pale tangerine, aqua and (a little bit) of white? And, IMHO, she should keep that hat for November at the cenataph. Sorry.....

    1. I agree love the shape and cut but would love in blush aqua and white and tangerine. Or as a solid. Just not a fan of this color combo. Happy Birthday Meghan!

      Delete
    2. I'm American and don't wear hats very often. But regardless of color, I'm not sure a small percher straw hat would work in November Judith. I tend to think of hats with felt-type bodies at that time of the year but what do I know!

      Delete
    3. Judith I am always puzzled at the comment, "not to outshine the bride." Exactly how does one do that? Even at the simplest of weddings, the bride is the only one in a long, white dress, flowing with a train and a veil, carrying a bouquet of flowers. The bride is front and centre during the ceremony and also during the reception. She is followed by a gaggle of bridesmaids or flower girls. Nobody can outshine the bride, no matter what they are wearing. That said, Meghan could show up in her gym clothes and the media would always be more interested in Meghan, than the bride…unless the bride is also a member of the royal family, or a celebrity. I do agree with you, that this is a November cenotaph hat and a lighter colour would be more appropriate for a summer wedding.

    4. Yes Laura sometime it happens, I went to a wedding some years ago and the mother of the groom wore a wedding dress herself and sadly it was more beautiful then the bride one. It was totally bad taste on her part of course so I understand the comment not to outshine the bride very much.

I think Meghan looks nice and flowy, love the hat. Happy birthday Meghan !!!

    2. Fiona, I too question the color choice and at least here in the South wearing black as a wedding guest is not the norm. It's summer for goodness sake!

      Delete
    3. Apparently not as duchess Kate wore a black blazer over a blue dress and a black hat to a wedding shortly before her own engagement was announced. Or as a wedding guest the same day as her first trooping the color. I believe she wore the white McQueen coat over a black and white patterned dress with a black hat. Meghan looks fine. Black is a chic color and has been for decades. I fail to understand this sudden pearl clutching over black. When you mix it up with colors (as Meghan does here or Kate at the weddings I mentioned) it looks fine and appropriate. If she had on full black with pearls and veil I might think it was inappropriate. But beyond that? Black is a fashionable color.

      Also happy birthday Meghan!

    4. A simple google image search reveals Duchess Catherine has worn black or black accents/patterns to weddings multiple times. And she is not American. So no it’s not an American style. Duchess Meghan looks more than appropriate. Beautiful as always.

    1. Yes pls. This is getting to be a tiring dynamics... critiquing her every outfits from top to bottom. We each have our own style and we can not always abide to what everyone thought as the appropriate one. I do not think that it is her goal to be just a fashion icon. She wanted to make something good to the platform that is given to her. Most importantly she married a man who truly loves her who just happened to be a Prince! As followers & admirers maybe it's best to look at the pictures and if not to your liking then just move on to other topics and just refrain of having to start writing your negative thoughts. Or maybe a note to self...stop reading comments? Lol. Oh well, Happy Birthday Meghan. All the best and be Happy!

    2. wait. I am confused. We are not allowed to criticize her clothes? Thats literally the blog is about her clothes. As long it's done respectfully critiquing the outfit is literally the purpose of the blog. I'm not trying to be rude but how is that tiring dynamic? And honestly, no I don't think anyone has to "wish" her a HB before talking about clothes. Again, as long as post is nice it's a allowed to discuss/ like/dislike etc... the clothes...

      Delete
    3. To me there is a difference between fashion critique and the endless criticism which veers toward some sort of personal failing, not the clothes. Whether her outfit works, is flattering, pretty, or isn’t—thats enjoyable and why I come here.

On the other hand, the umpteenth “She is breaching royal protocol (AGAIN)”, thats not fashion, shes wrong to wear black in summer, to a wedding, on Tuesday, etc, etc., that goes more toward her as a person, that she is personally deficient and incapable. It just is sad and depressing to read comments that criticize her from her hair to her shoes—over and over and over. But again, thats just how I feel.

      Delete
    4. To me there is a difference between fashion critique and comments which veer toward assessing her as a person not capable of doing what is appropriate for her or her role. I greatly enjoy opinions as to whether her outfit is nicely put together, is it pretty, do you covet those shoes, is that a flattering color on her.

On the other hand, there is, at times, a surfeit of remarks that go more toward her as a person. No black at a wedding—that suggests Meghan is ignorant of the rules. Meghan is breaking royal protocol—again! How many times have we read that, only to find out that there is no such protocol.

Speaking only for myself, I love the fashion comments and am so darn tired of the others.

    5. I quite agree anon 23.04. It’s like people (more so on other sites only minor on this blog) are looking to turn her outfit choice into a scandal or a personal failure or proof that she is not fitting in. When I don’t think anything could be farther from the truth. She has looked polished and respectable at every turn and I would argue not at all out of line of what royal women wear. They don’t all dress identically. And some are more adventurous than others. Sophie wore a jumpsuit to ascot. I imagine if Meghan had done that the speculation about her failing at being a royal would have been endless. I also think if you look at other royal families throughout Europe Meghan is quite consistent with the looks you see. So to conclude I think it is absolutely fair to critique and discuss style, but this undercurrent of her supposedly failing at her new role has gotten quite tiresome.

      Delete
    6. JY that's a not nice comment. It's her birthday, what's wrong with wishing someone well? But you want come running saying how inappropriate she was?

      Delete
    7. I look at it another way. I don't interpret the critical comments to mean the poster thinks she's ignorant. No one thinks Meghan is stupid or uninformed. I think some posters view her as a nonconformist who wishes to dress outside the box. That's how these comments strike me and I don't find them offensive. There is nothing wrong with being original.

  17. Happy Birthday Duchess Meghan! I'm torn about the dress. It is indeed dark blue and I actually like the contrasting bottom and the overall affect of the dress, but Meghan really stands out because it is so atypical. I've actually been wearing a little fall this summer because my office is so cold so I get it. Summer attire can grow tiresome after a while! Plus I'm just ready for summer to be over! Having said all that, this dress is questionable for a summer wedding. Victoria Beckham was heavily criticized for wearing dark blue to Meghan's and Harry's wedding. I suspect Meghan will be criticized as well, which is a shame, especially on her birthday. I would have repeated the green Self-Portrait dress if I were her. That dress with that hat would have been perfection. And knowing me, I would have added a black camisole for modesty.

    1. I think VB was criticized more because of the style of the dress (it was a very "covered up" stiff style) and her permanently sour expression. Fergie and Chelsy D also wore navy to H&M's wedding (as did several others) and I don't recall criticism of their outfits.

      Delete
    2. Just goes to show how different people have different tastes. I googled the self portrait dress only to find that it is one of my very least fav dresses that the Duchess has ever worn. Apologies, but I think the self portrait dress is ugly - but even that ugly dress was appropriate for the occasion, as is everything that the DoS wears. I loved this dress and hope she had a lovely birthday with the Prince ❤️

I felt like she might have been abandoning her true style in order to fit in with the English country garden wedding look. It was a disastrous choice, in my opinion. 1. I like today's outfit and believe it is more flattering and appropriate than the last wedding ensemble. Last time, I felt she stood out too much because of the length of the dress and I believe that should be avoided when attending someone else's wedding.

    2. @royalfan, she smiled and waved because she was acknowledging the well-wishes who were singing happy Birthday to and for her. No have not done so would have been construed as rude. Context is important. Nearly all the criticisms levied at her are entirely unfair.

  22. To start, happy birthday to Meghan and congratulations to the bride and groom!

I think the outfit is just her style. The comments about outshining always make me sad. Someone always says it when it comes to how Meghan (and Kate) dress at others' weddings and I think it does a disservice to the brides. Media attention may be on the two duchesses, but when it comes to friends and family, the ones who matter most, no one is taking attention from the bride. The suggestion that they have to dim their lights as though the one getting married doesn't have enough of their own leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. I’ve never quite followed this line of thinking. Everyone knows who the bride is at a wedding. To my mind the only way you could outshine her would be through appalling behavior or a scandalous outfit. Something neither Meghan or Kate is going to do. Anyone in this circle knows that If they invite a member of the royal family the media attention will follow. There’s nothing anyone can do about that, and it certainly can’t be controlled by wearing a certain outfit. It seems to me that everyone involved just does what they would normally do with media or without.

      Delete
    2. Anon 22:44 agree also.

      Delete
    3. I absolutely agree that everyone knows who the bride is and. obviously. friends and family are there to support her (and the groom).

But there is an additional factor for a royal lady to consider when she is a wedding guest. And by that I mean that it is up to the royal guest to understand the media interest (intrusion) that her attendance creates, and she needs to handle with tact and humility. THIS is the reason for being understated or perhaps even wearing a recycle; it shows an understanding of the circus that one can potentially bring to the table as a royal guest, and reflects a recognition that this is the bride's day.

I will just add that I wish Meghan had not waved and acknowledged the press. Not only was it not her day, but in light of the antics of her father and siblings, I think a dash of humility would go a long way in showing that she appreciates the impact of this on the institution she married into.

      Delete
    4. Royal fan, Meghan waving to the crowd is just basic manners. This website is becoming a channel to bash Meghan's manners. Her family has nothing to do with this.

      Delete
    5. As Anon 22:44 said you'd have to be exhibiting appealing behavior in order to draw focus. No amount of understated dressing or recycling is going to change much (and neither lady regularly wears focus pulling looks anyway, especially not Meghan who thus far wears pretty understated neutrals to a everything) as the media will report and we will comment regardless.

Did she wave to the press? I know she waved to some townspeople who were telling her happy birthday and calling her name.

I don't understand what you mean about her father and her siblings.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous in Colorado5 August 2018 at 20:28

@royalfan: Maybe Meghan waved to the (non wedding guests) onlookers who wished her a happy birthday, as reported by some outlets? I don't think she was acknowledging "the press"....

      Delete
    7. Bashing? By suggesting that Meghan should not have waived and acknowledged the Press? Did you see the video where they were calling out her name and trying to get a reaction?

I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

My point is that she is no longer a celebrity. She is a duchess and, like it or not, the rules change. Let's also remember how protective Harry has been. If she appears to relish the attention, then it makes him look somewhat [fill in the blank].

And that is my last comment on this subject. I expressed my opinion and have attempted to explain the reasoning behind it.

      Delete
    8. Royal fan, I rarely agree with your most of your comments generally but I choose not to respond - this time I will. Don't use Meghan father to talk about humility, in my opinion your comment was below the belt.

I watched several videos on the getty images, I even saw video from fans on twitter, there was a quite a number of people from the area, who were shouting. She acknowledged the people from the neighborhood which I consider good manners like another poster mentioned, I don't think waving to acknowledge people it's seeking attention behavior, in fact ignoring would be rude. Being a Duchess doesn't mean one has to be rude.

    9. Meghan actually waved at a well wisher who shouted Happy Birthday to her. This is real and on video. The press actually tried to push the well wishers out of the way. Those gathered also sang happy birthday to the duchess. The Duchess politely responded with a one second wave.

  23. Happy Birthday, Meghan!

I love this look - dark colors to a wedding is strictly a personal choice. I’ve worn black, dark blue, black and white, purple and every other color of the rainbow to weddings. It’s a personal choice - I wore black and white to my cousin’s wedding and that was in June a few years ago. As long as you’re comfortable, I say wear what you want.

The only color I am against is solid white at a wedding but I’ve seen people do it so to each his own.

I wish Meghan a happy birthday and much happiness. Her look is lovely as usual and a little different. No problem if she doesn't wear the pastel colours or floral fantasies that we see so often. I personally like her originality!

  25. Not my favorite dress.I am not super fond of the large color blocking. Also not a big fan of leaving tops unbuttoned to show ones lingerie, especially for a daytime event. Maybe this was a 5:00 pm wedding? She looks very pretty and her dark hair works well with the dark hat.

    1. I think that top button was a temporary wardrobe malfunction, as she seems to be all buttoned up in the rest of the pictures. Having said that, I really like the bride and groom's, bicycle idea. My mom used to sing the song "Daisy, Daisy (Bicycle Built for Two").

      Delete
    2. RM, after seeing further pictures I wondered also. I also thought she had not buttoned it to allow it to get tucked in correctly and then after she wore it for a bit discovered how much it gapped when not buttoned. Either way it was certainly not unbuttoned at the end of the ceremony. I actually appreciate that she wore a pretty undergarment to deal with the low shoulder openings under the arms. Often if those are not fitted well you get a lot of skin showing from the sides as it gaps open:):).

    1. Also just my two cents re: black at a wedding...I think it's entirely appropriate to wear black anywhere these days. It is chic and classic and respectful and looks great on a both Meghan and Kate. And btw - I've noticed TONS of horrifically-garish, two-short, frumpy, dowdy, and just plain hideous dresses on many royals and their guests at weddings, at garden parties, at events - just the worst in every way - so wearing "black" isn't enough to criticize the look IMO!!! Also - This dress isn't black, lol! It's partly-black, but it's totally summerized by the color blocking, so pretty, and the pleating, the neckline, the sleeves, the shoes, those earrings - so gorgeous - I mean she looks GREAT!!!!

  28. Meghan is an American and was a style icon from her blog. She loves challenges and setting trends and would not let others expectation bottle her up into a stereotypical convenient package. She will push the envelop to encourage others to do so in order to feel comfortable about oneself. Americans love black any hour of the day and any season of the year. It is a celebration of one's personal freedom.

    1. I've heard the BRF wears black only at funerals, memorial services, etc too Wellness Junkie, but aside from the Queen and maybe Camilla, it doesn't seem like that's really true. As other people commenting have said, Kate has worn outfits with alot of black to weddings, including outfits with solid black jackets and black hats and she's worn black at various daytime appearances that weren't funerals, memorials, etc. I think we've also seen one of the York sisters in black at a daytime event. (Of course we've seen Kate multiple times in black at night.) At any rate, given the style of this dress and the color-blocked skirt, I can't imagine a royal ever wearing it to a funeral or memorial service! It's just not a "mourning" dress. (Plus it still looks navy to me :)

    2. Diana wore black quite a bit so I don't think Kate or Meghan are trailblazing or breaking rules. 😉

    3. True Royalfan. I couldn't remember though if Diana's black dresses were mostly post-separation. I know at least one I liked was. But regardless, it does seem non-funeral black is quite acceptable these days for women in the BRF.

    4. I heard that rule over the years, especially when Diana wore her black strapless dress to her first event after her engagement announcement. Then recently after seeing photos, I realized even QE wore a black ball gown when she was a young queen and even in 2009 to the Royal Variety show, so I believe that "rule" isn't a rule at all. Probably a preference though. And of course Kate has worn black through the last several years.

  32. Happy birthday to Meghan. She looks happy and beautiful. Lovely, elegant dress for a wedding, and I think she's styled it beautifully with the belt and hat. She absollutely can rock those hats! She never fails to surprise me with her choices. Navy, to my knowledge, has long been a favored summer color, and often paired with white or cream. Meghan seems to favor inky navy, which I personally love, but because it often photographs as black, it draws an immediate negative reaction with some people. Also, dark navy can look as formal as black. BTW, Eugenie looked lovely, and glowing with happiness as well.

  36. I was looking at other guests and found that, in addition to that lovely white-with-roses dress, there are a lot of dresses that show a lot of skin and are very drapey. Well, she tried the blue-and-white drapey dress, and everyone went nuts. Now she is wearing something crisp that will hold up in photos. She is wearing one of her favorite colors, favorite neck styles, favorite waist styles, and favorite lengths. Why do we celebrate how special she is yet want her to dress like "everyone else"? Or why do we find issues where there are none?

I was looking at the latest round of clothes that Queen Letizia has been wearing, including shorts. Can you imagine if Meghan wore shorts?

There is no one outfit that is appropriate---there are 100s and she felt like wearing this today. Some of the guests look like they just came from the beach, so I imagine this is a friendly wear-what-you-want wedding anyway.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Alison, you say some of the guests look like they came from the beach. On another site I did see a man in shorts. But I figured he wasn't a guest, but rather just an onlooker. It would have been known that Harry and Meghan would be at this wedding. Therefore, the public would have come out to view it. Security doesn't look that militant, and so maybe some "just folks" were in some of the photos.

      Delete
    2. Laura, I was kidding a bit! I was thinking of those beach cover sort of dresses, merely to say that some guests were very causal and so it seems like anything was fine and appropriate if it was what the wearer wanted to wear. My focus was on the pretty woman with long dark hair, sunglasses, and a dress that was off the shoulders and rather low, who appeared next to Meghan in some photos.

  38. Since I’m sure Meghan doesn’t read these comments, I won’t say happy birthday...but I hope she had a good day. Now onto fashion...the look is fantastic IMO, the dress modern and stylish and perfectly acceptable for a wedding. The hat worked with the dress (and I hate hats) and over all I think this was a perfect balance of stylishness and not standing out too much. Interesting she chose a “high street” brand, possibly due to the press attempts to total what she has spent on clothes, accessories and jewelry since the engagement, but it is fun to see her in something that most could afford. I couldn’t wear it cuz polyester and I do not get along, but on her it didn’t look cheap at all.

  39. Having a little trouble with the reply app. With that said, yes black is very often seen at American weddings, events etc. especially on the East coast in major metropolitan cities. It is often a night choice in particular. I like Meghan's choice today for an afternoon British wedding. If she was in the USA I think she would not wear that. It is very much a day dress. We consider weddings to be major social functions and to that end we dress in a more upscale manner. The dress Meghan has on appears to be very much understated as is worn in the UK. This particular dress would be worn to a dinner party, meeting, lecture series etc. not a special event. I am surprised at the number of elements she has chosen in that she is wearing summer straw in her hat and handbag while wearing a leather belt with suade shoes. I like the dress as it is affordable, off the rack and current. Her choice today is in my opinion very British for the event.

Meghan looks fabulous—as usual. I lover her hat, the dress is lovely and she looks HAPPY! She has managed to dress in a way that is flattering, fashionable, and yet still allows her to be in the background (not “stealing the spotlight” as one article said *eye roll*). 50. Oh my goodness, my earlier comments set off such a firestorm. I’m very sorry to anyone who was offended or angry by my opinions. To my eye, the dress looks black, and it appears that she’s accessorizing with black. Even with the color accents on the skirt, it’s a largely solid black (or midnight) dress and I personally don’t care for that look at a daytime wedding. Daytime wedding dressing can be tricky, especially for those of us who don’t like large floral prints. I feel like I’ve just been on the line at daytime weddings where I’ve worn a black-backgrounded dress with small pink flowers and white-and-black pattterned dresses. At my fall wedding 10 years ago, a few of my female guests wore brighter solid color dresses with black jackets or black sweaters (similar to what Kate wore, minus the fabulous hat, at the wedding she attended when she was still secretly engaged) and they looked lovely. For whatever reason, it’s the (largely) dark solid of the dress that Meghan chose today that strikes me as off for the occasion. ( BTW, I think black at evening weddings is totally fine, and I have some friends who are squeamish with that idea, so we’ve all got our quirks when it comes to fashion rules.)

In a any event, Meghan looked pretty and happy today, and I’m 100% confident she wouldn’t give two figs about my opinion of her wardrobe.

  52. Happy birthday, Meghan. Wonderful to see the Duchess look so happy and relaxed on her birthday. Make the most of this appearance as one of the British papers is reporting that Harry is concerned about the hysteria surrounding Meghan and that they'll be out of public sight until September.
I agree with zipzipzippy that the dress appears black & it would be odd to accessorise navy with black. It IS unusual but not unknown for summer weddings in U.K. I've certainly worn a black dress with a bright orange coat and black accessories to an autumn wedding ( possibly a bit too Hallowe'en like now that I think of it but no one was unkind enough to say so!!)
I understood that this was primarily a fashion blog so don't understand the heated comments when someone says they dislike something. It's not an attack on Meghan and the fun of the blog ( well done, Charlotte,, for your fantastic work to give us posts and pics so quickly 😀) is seeing what others think and reading the interaction. Why get annoyed by what someone else thinks and criticise them for not liking something?
The main thing is, surely, that Meghan looks great. Remember when 37 would be considered well into middle age?
Also wishing a long and happy marriage to the bride and groom. She looks amazing

We love our Fall season and foliage, and pumpkins and Halloween. And the wedding could not have looked classier. I am sure you did not look too Halloween-ish in your black and orange :)

    2. Well said AnnieM. I am amazed that some have commented that those who do not like Meghan's dress are somehow being unfair. Why are they allowed to have an opinion - and that's what all these comments are. . . opinions - while those who do not agree with them a apparently being mean, finding fault, or implying that somehow Meghan has "failed". This is a blog about fashion and if everyone liked everything she wears, it would be a very boring blog indeed.

I, for one, do not like black. I do love navy and wish designers would start using the color as it too goes with all colors, but is not quite as dreary (to me). I do like Meghan's dress, just not for a summer country wedding - again - only my opinion.

  55. There have been numerous rules regarding appropriate rules for dress in relation to season and occasion that many of us have grown up with, but I think there is much relaxing of these rules in the past decade or so. I think the important thing is to respect the culture of the people and the occasion. For example, no bare shoulders and arms to a Muslim wedding, no black to an Asian wedding, etc. This particular wedding, while respecting the traditions of an English country wedding, seem to be quite informal. Not every woman wore a hat, and there were low cut necklines, and bare shoulders. The "rickshaw" transportation of the bride and groom was just delightful, and to me reflects a great sense of fun on the part of the bride and groom. The bride looked so happy and pretty. Her gigantic daisy bouquet was just charming. Meghan looked delighted to see her new relatives. Just as an aside, Eugenie seems to be starting a very "conservative" phase as a wedding guest.

I admire how she built her public persona. And dresses with style & tailoring of which I am sure The Queen commends her. In point of fact, she was born to be royal. Her dress of choice is typical of her signature style and I would live to have that dress in my cupboard. I must say that I much prefer photos taken after the ceremony...Meghan looks stunning there. Upon her arrival, there was one quibble for me - and that was the lace bra/camisole peeking out. I don't particularly care for "rules" saying that any piece and kind of underwear should remain unseen. It is the fuss of fabrics that ruins the look for me - there are simply too many kinds of fabric in her outfit for adding up lace.

  67. Thank you Charlotte for your post. Happy birthday to Meghan, the first as a royal. And congratulations to the lovely newlyweds!
I agree that Meghan dress style is nice, but the colours should have been brighter...more summery... It perfectly matches with Harry 's outfit, though. If you look them together, Harry's colours ensemble and his trousers lines are well combined with M. colours dress and pleated skirt. So, it makes sense.
Also the first sight of her dress colour at Prince Louis christening was a bit disappointing to me, but in the photos it blended so well and made more sense.
We have seen her choices for two weddings and one christening, I think she is doing well, experimenting and settling in her new adventure. I think that in some events she is too cautious with her dress choices, to not to outshine the main person or to get too much attention. But it's a shame because she is beautiful, attractive and elegant, and she should show it when she can of course!
BTW... P. Harry looked gorgeous with this outfit and light blue is perfect for him.

It always happens, after a few early days of hard work & loads of fun. There is always that day that just sticks in your craw! So today we were filming in a Public Place in London & we had to contend with lots of fans watching filming! I've never experienced this before, but there were some people who were so bold & clueless that they snuck through the lines & just walked On Set & into The Scenes!!! I mean Who Does That??? Ruining various shots! So anyway, while I can't say the name of the movie, or share the names of the actors, I can say that at the rate the fans were filming with their smartphones, one of you may possibly have a pic or video of us filming shared with you by someone of social media. So if you do & it was from Today? Then you know that's our film!! :) xo

    7. Oh, Becca, have you ever filmed in NY? Movies and TV shows are always filming there, and people are deeply unimpressed when the public street/sidewalk is suddenly declared to be a “set.” Folks giving you the finger would be on the polite side of responses. I think filmmakers must build extra time into their schedules because this is so inevitable. My sister had a moment - I think they were filming White Collar (tv show) and she’s trying to get across the street to her office to start work. Someone yelled, “Hey lady, you’re on our set!” and she didn’t even pause, just yelled back, “My boss doesn’t care!” Which was certainly true. Try telling your boss you’re late because you had to stop for people filming; the response would be, “So what made you decide their job was more important than yours?” I think if there’s much big city filming in your future, you’ll probably get used to it.

Sorry you had an irritating day, though. :-)

  70. I have worn black to a wedding so I think this look today is lovely. It simple and fits perfectly. It’s not look at me . I think Meghan has a certain style and no matter how much we look for the bright colours and pretty dresses, we are not going to get them. Meghan is herself so pretty that her clothes are in the background. sinead

  71. I agree, Sinead. Clothes that highlight her natural beauty seem to be what she prefers. And as much as I personally love patterns and extra elements, she photographs so well in understated outfits. Sometimes when you have a room full of gorgeous outfits, the person in one subdued color stands out. And this dress is made for her---it combines all her favorites colors. :)

    1. Hi Allison, she is always understated, her style is her own. I also think there is a difference in British/European fashion and American fashion. I think Meghan’s approach to what she chooses shows that. My American friends buy quality brands/ designers often at discount prices. Over here we buy more off the High street, Zara, Mango etc. I think we are more into the latest look, current trends etc . Meghan has worn very little European high street fashion, even the expensive brands. I have never heard of Club Monaco up to seeing this dress. So it’s interesting to see what Meghan will continue to choose for her new life. Sinead

  72. I haven't read all the comments yet: did anyone notice the bride's shoes? Also, I think Daisy's necklace would make a lovely, and very delicate, tiara.

    Meghan looks amazing!

  73. The Duchess of Sussex looks extra pretty on her birthday! My favorite dress. The green self-portrait dress is now in 2nd place. Thanks, Charlotte for a wonderful post! Parthenia

  75. Just wondering.....in the pic that's sort of a side view she looks a little full around the stomach/waist. Possible baby bump? I didn't have time to read all the comments so just wondering if anyone else noticed?

  76. Very well put. I haven’t liked everything she’s worn, but she knows her own best style; and she always look beautiful and interested in everyone she meets. She’s taken on a high stress job for the man she loves, not even three months ago. I am looking forward to the subtle ways she will contribute to this 1000 year institution.

  77. I did notice this, Bronte, but I think it is just the dress. The waistline is ruched and already has a self tie inserted and then Meghan wrapped it in a leather belt. With all the pleating everything around the waist just looks bulky.

Meghan looks lovely as always and the wedding photos are beautiful as well as fun. I love the daisies in the bride’s bouquet as well as the “bicycle built for two” from the old Daisy Daisy song.

  81. I wanted to add a couple of comments. First, it's Meghan's birthday - I don't know a woman that doesn't wear something she loves on her day. But she's also got to deal with the fact that she can't upstage - she's a guest. Whether or not some of us would never wear black - I'm one of those individuals, plus I would never wear red either - doesn't mean that someone else shouldn't. My rules (or guidelines) are mine, others need not adhere (let's face it, there are individuals in my office that eat with their mouth open, blow their nose, brush their hair, and crack their knuckles - some of those I would choose to do in the ladies room). Different generations, didn't parenting, different.

Secondly, I thought her dress light and comfortable for a summer day. Personally I would have styled it with her blush heels and added a blush clutch. But I love the hat she chose. She is really building out a lovely hat collection and I look forward to seeing this one again. While I would have chosen a blush clutch, I love the one she is carrying and it's reasonably priced to boot!

But to be honest, I would have worn the green Portrait dress, as several of you suggested in the posts above. Have we seen Meghan do any repeats yet? I've enjoyed seeing Meghan's style evolve and love to see her so happy on her birthday.

Also the bride looked lovely. The flowers - daisies? - on her dress, her fun bouquet, and their exit on the bicycle built for two!

    1. I liked what Meghan wore to the wedding quite a bit. I also loved the green Self Portrait dress she wore in the spring. But I think I partly loved that dress because she wore it with a jacket. I honestly thought it was kind of a hideous dress when I later saw it was a "cold shoulder" style with thick-looking black straps. So while I liked it before as Meghan wore it, I don't know if it would have worked (for me) for this wedding because I don't think it would have looked right with a jacket now. And those straps....If they had been thinner, or sewn from the same fabric as the dress...or something. I am also not sure about what sort of hat would have worked with it. But I'm not a hat-wearer.

  82. Oh, I think Meghan looked lovely! The dress had such great movement. I loved the colors, though as someone mentioned above, tangerine/aqua combo also would have been great. But since black/navy/charcoal are my go-to/safe colors for anything and everything, I think the dress was a terrific choice.

  83. Beautiful dress, perfect fit and she looks so happy. Navy is a good colour for her. I love how she keeps at least some of her old self. She is lovely. Makes me happy every time I see her staying true to herself-whilst playing by the so-called ‘rules’.

On the other hand, I think she needs shoes with lower heels. I noticed she literally struggled to walk (again), her ankles completely out of alignment with the foot and leg, trying to balance herself. I understand the desire to compensate for the hight difference, but in the end I don’t think it does here any service. Quite the opposite.

I am looking forward to her first solo engagement. So far we continue to look at her solely as Harry’s wife. She is so much more than that.

    1. Ok this is something I've noticed whenever I've met an actor or actress. Actual height = IMDB height - 2 or 3 inches is a good rule of thumb. I've met enough actresses to be shocked at how small they are in real life. They're gorgeous, but just mostly a lot shorter than I expected. This is not a knock against them -- baskbetball players do the same. So Steph Curry's 6'3" is probably 6'1" and Isiah Thomas was listed as 6'1" but unofficially 5'11". Meghan's "official" heigh is 5'7"/5'6". I've seen both listed. From looking at pictures of her with other people I'd say she's 5'5"ish? So i think she'll teeter in heels until she gets comfortable enough being shorter than her IMDB listed height. Or maybe she never will. I mean Kate is like 5'10" and still never leaves the house without 4" stilettos.

    2. I have to agree. Those heels might look great if you stand still or sit but if you cannot handle walking in them it would be better not to wear them. Especially as those country wedding bring uneven surfaces like grass or gravel.
It is sad because I love those shoes.

    3. I don't see Meghan having problems walking in her shoes, she is walking fine to me.

      Delete
    4. Yes, I agree. I have come to realize that she does not cling to Prince Harry For a grand public display of affection, but rather she is hanging on to him for support when walking due to difficulties navigating the terrain in heel which are much too high for her,

      Delete
    5. I disagree they hold hands because they are affectionate not because she cannot walk on heels. These are comments I saw on the internet saying "Meghan cannot walk in heels, that's why she clings to Harry, she cannot walk by herself". Simply not true, it's clear they are affectionate and are both tactile even Dickie Arbiter mentioned this. When Meghan arrived at the wedding she walked by herself and she was walking fine, I didn't see her limping and when Harry came out he held her hands. Her first birthday as a royal wife you can bet he was going to show some affection.

  84. This is a beautiful wedding outfit and Meghan looks good in it, I looked at it yesterday morning hoping to buy it, it was in stock but now it's sold out.
Wishing a happy birthday to the Duchess. I hope she ignores the haters and trolls and continues to be her confident cheerful self. More great things to come!!

  85. Would have opted for lighter shades for a daytime summer wedding but the dress is lovely and she looks good !!!

Wow the bride is just so pretty and dainty and absolutely loved her wedding dress ! Gorgeous !!!

  86. I have really enjoyed Meghan's post-wedding style and the selections she has chosen. I don't want to start any rumors and wearing pleats can be tricky, however, I think she looks like she could be pregnant :)

  87. Prince Harry Watch instagram has posted the video of the woman who shouted Happy Birthday to Meghan. You can go watch the video and the woman was very respectful too. Meghan then responded with a wave. The woman explains she shares her birthday with Meghan and is very happy Meghan responded. The woman was close enough to Meghan when she got out of the car, when she shouted Happy Birthday. I saw this as an act of kindness from Meghan because she could have ignored I think it would have appeared rude. Please let's stop overeacting to some of the things we see without verifying and blaming Meghan for courting the press. Meghan has been attacked for "breaking royal protocol" and even royal reporters are saying these protocols Meghan is supposedly breaking do not exist. I wish Charlotte could post the video of the "Birthday" woman but I know it may not be possible. It just makes me sad when Meghan is unfairly criticized especially when there's evidence showing otherwise.

Wow, thank you for this post, Breezy. I don't think that accusing Meghan of courting the press is very fair. She is just doing her very best to settle in to a new situation as a new wife and royal. It is quite obvious. With all the rubbish surrounding the trashy part of her family, she needs all the support she can get.

  88. I showed my sister this Club Monaco dress and she was thinking to buy it. She loves color blocking. Then this morning she said the dress is sold out, she is so upset, Lol!
I am thinking to venture into the color blocking world, I just need some Meghan confidence and pizazz!

  89. Am late to the party! Let me start by saying,I wish the Duchess an amazing productive 37th year! I think what matters - What will she do with the platform the has been given? I believe she will use it to the best of her ability for the causes she believes in, abiding by her new family's rules and so far I think she has been doing a wonderful job. As for the clothes, she is a 37 year old woman who knows what she likes, is confident and comfortable in her choices. My opinion is that at this wedding she looked beautiful, elegant and radiant!
This is my toast for the Duchess - To a productive and successful year! (raising glass)
