Duchess Meghan Makes Festive Visit to Brinsworth House

The Duchess of Sussex made a pre-Christmas visit to the Royal Variety Charity’s residential nursing and care home Brinsworth House this morning.

The Royal Variety Charity, of which The Queen is Patron, assists those who have worked professionally in the entertainment industry and are in need of help and assistance as a result of old age, ill-health, or hard times. Many of those who work in the entertainment industry can often work season to season, spending long periods with no work at all, and with little ability to make any plans for their futures, or to provide themselves with security should they have an accident or fall ill. Money raised by the Royal Variety Charity, and through the annual Royal Variety Performance, helps and supports hundreds of retired entertainers throughout the UK.

An arrival video.

The organisation is steeped in royal history. The Royal Variety Charity has been honoured with Royal Patronage from the reigning Monarch ever since 1921, when His Majesty King George V became the first Patron of the Variety Aristes' Benevolent Fund  (the previous name of the Royal Variety Charity). Other Patrons over the years included His Majesty King George VI, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It is believed that the Royal Variety Charity is the only charity to exist in the UK  with such a long, unbroken line of patronage from the reigning monarch.

Brinsworth House, which is owned and managed by the charity, accommodates up to 36 residents who are cared for by a dedicated team of nurses and care assistants. Built in 1850, the care home has a number of lounges, a bar area, library, restaurant, television rooms and a hair salon. The house is decorated throughout to emphasise its theatrical lineage, representing the many retired artists and entertainers who have been supported by the Royal Variety Charity.

'The Noble Board' within Brinsworth House, detailing the names of the 'Noble 600' who each contributed £2.10.0 in 1912 to buy Brinsworth House for the entertainment profession.

Last month Harry and Meghan attended the annual Royal Variety Performance which supports Brinsworth House. Reporters revealed the Duchess was eager to find out more and see the charity's work in action. Emily Nash reports Meghan told chairman Giles Cooper she used to visit a similar home for retired actors in LA and "it brought feelings of being amongst your own".

Meghan also spoke in fluent Spanish to one resident.

The Duchess heard from staff members about the history of Brinsworth House, before visiting some of the residential home’s facilities.

Meghan joined residents for a selection of  Christmas-themed activities, including arts and crafts and carols around the Christmas tree.

Meghan enjoyed a musical performance.

Note a striking portrait of Her Majesty in the background.

Simon Perry reports: 'Speaking with retired West End theatre actress Josephine Gordon, 87, Meghan said she was “very good.” She then paused, put her hands on her growing baby bump and added that she was feeling “very pregnant today.” The royal mom-to-be then asked the resident if she had any children, to which she responded, “No, I had a career.” Meghan, a former actress herself, replied, “Yes, that I understand.”

The Duchess contributed to the festive artwork.

A closer look at Meghan's beautiful handwriting. Her calligraphy skills come in very handy as a royal :)

Victoria Murphy reports:

'Activities co-ordinator Jay Crank told T&C: “She said she used to teach calligraphy. She chose her bauble shape and produced a beautiful work of art.” Jay added about the visit: “She was so natural and so wonderful to be with. She can join our class any time. We haven’t done any calligraphy here before but I think she’s inspired us. She is a wonderful person, so genuine.” She added about the residents: “They feel truly uplifted. They were able to connect I think, perhaps it’s because of her background.”

And Meghan signed the visitors' book.

A closer look at her signature.

The visit provided a lovely opportunity for Meghan to reconnect with her acting roots. It was fascinating to hear she's visited a similar place in LA for retired actors. Her charitable endeavors have obviously spanned her life and career.

Meghan told her hosts "It's really been such a treat to be here. I can't tell you how much it's meant to me". The video below is packed with an array of special moments from the visit.

Meghan wished the press pack a Merry Christmas as she departed.

Moving onto a look at what Meghan wore today.

Meghan's coat is the Soia & Kyo Adelaida style (with thanks to Meghan's Fashion). The piece is described as "a slim fit maxi length classic wool coat. Elegant and refined, with a classic notch collar and versatile waist belt. Constructed with our signature stretch printed lining, this season go-to can be worn belted for timeless appeal or open for a modern flair." It's also available at Revolve with a detachable collar.

Meghan wore the BROCK Collection Odilia dress. The dress is described as: "This grey floral-print taffeta Odilia dress is an apt reflection of Brock Collection's romantic and ethereal mood for Resort 2019. Made in Italy, it's tailored for a slim fit with a panelled bodice and coordinating pencil skirt, and features ruched cap sleeves to accentuate the square neckline." It's available at Matches Fashion.

The Duchess wore her favourite Aquazzura Deneuve bow pumps.

Meghan carried her Wilbur & Gussie Charlie Oyster clutch.

And accessorised with her Birks Petale diamond and gold earrings.

We'll see arrival shots of Harry and Meghan for the Queen's pre-Christmas luncheon at Buckingham Palace tomorrow.

She really does look radiant. I wouldn't choose this dress for myself but that's the beauty of living vicariously thru the royals ;-) Though the more I look at this, the more I see echoes of Jane Austen era dresses, at least in the upper part. Meghan's beautiful.
I'm one of the people who was questioning her bump cradling at the Fashion Awards. Seeing the video above, where the DoS would briefly graze her belly with her hands and then quickly put her hands elsewhere, as if she was making a conscious effort NOT to touch her belly....makes me regret that I questioned her bump cradling to begin with. I do hope she's enjoying this time. Pregnancy for those fortunate to experience it is a special time.
Lastly, per the video, she's so genuine in her interactions. And to wish the press pack a merry Christmas in light of the media's recent coverage...well, she's a class act.

    1. agree. i don't mean to criticize because its very hard to dress a constantly changing body. but this wasn't flattering, today. (honestly, the neckline is tricky even in less tricky situations...)
The coat is beautiful, though. the soft color is great.

  3. She looks lovely and the soft grey palette is pretty. I will say the same thing that I said about Kate. Maternity clothes are her friend and look better after a point. The pulling and ill fit of the dress is taking away from what would be a flawless look.

    1. I thought the same as you at first; however, when I look at the stick photos of the dress it seems to pucker and pull even in a not-pregnant model. So I looked again at the pictures of Meghan and I quite fell in love with the dress.

  4. Oh goodness, why can’t I like anything lately??? She is glowing bless her heart!! But the dress is horribly too tight. What a shame to spend so much money on a dress that is too little. Who is dressing her? I am finding her an alternative... please hire a seamstress!! The dress itself is feminine and beautiful, it’s just in the wrong size...

    1. I agree! I don’t know if she has a stylist, but if she does..well, he/she’s not doing a great job during this pregnancy.
At least I hope the dress is not as uncomfortable as it seems.
The coat, on the contrary, is really pretty.

    2. Love to see Meghan out and about, but this dress is a big fail - it's holiday season, so clothing should reflect the chillier weather, winter colors instead of spring or summer weights & styles - and where are the proper maternity clothes? Coat is good, tho

    3. This is like the "no white after Labour Day" rule. So outdated! There is no reason you can't wear non-seasonal clothes at this time of year. I wish the fit of this dress had been better, because I really think she could have worn it well. Love the coat though.

    4. It appears she did have some alterations made. That front slit actually looks smaller in person versus the model photo so I am not sure why she keeps wearing such ill-fitting clothes. I 100% understand that she is most likely not familiar with how her body will change during pregnancy with it being her first. Most pregnant women have been there but I don't understand why she doesn't have back ups! Maybe this dress fitted last week but not today! I completely understand that she is most likely still transitioning in her life as a royal but she needs more styling help.

I don't think the dress is the wrong size, it is just not structured for a blossoming figure. It is a lovely dress, but Meghan is too pregnant for it. It does not even seem to be a fabric that has some stretch or give to it.

Lovely! I am so happy we can move forward to a new event, and hopefully the intense media can leave the endless Christmas Card analysis and evil gossip behind. Surely there is nothing bad to see here.. A beautiful woman - a Duchess - doing a good deed wearing pretty clothes.. Well done Meghan!!!!

I remember being at a point in my pregnancy where I didnt fit into regular clothes, and maternity was just not fitting me yet, but I opted to go for maternity dresses because I fit into them better, and they grew with me. I wish she would do the same. the coat is gorgeous though.

    1. It’s just an impression. Meghan was very comfortable in her dress. There are pictures where she sits comfortably across her legs. I found this dress very feminine, pretty and classy.

    2. We cannot know how she feels in it but it looks bad. Rather than thinking how nice she looks or how it is great for the event at hand, many of us are remembering the feeling of being stuffed into something too tight and wondering where the maturbity clothes are.

  11. Meghan is too cute. I like this dress because it varies these styles. I find the dress very pretty; Perhaps not the most beautiful of her dresses, but a nice dress to have in her closet to vary from time to time. Happy future mom.

  12. Love the soft greys but that dress is way too tight. The skirt doesn't lay right and it puckers. At a certain point in pregnancy maternity clothing becomes necessary. It just looks better because it's cut to flatter, and fit, a growing pregnancy figure.

Like Kate's sledges I am a little over this shoe. She obviously likes them and I didn't mind them in the first 5 colors but.

    1. Or if not actual maternity clothes (I think it's time) perhaps not a dress described as "tailored for a slim fit with a panelled bodice and coordinating pencil skirt."

If she wanted a spring dress for some reason, a style like this might work better. It's about the same price but maybe could be worn again.

  13. I’m surprised this isn’t a maternity dress.. Stretchy bump-hugging maternity wear, instead of tents, has been the style for quite some time now. So while this could have been “maternity”, alas it is not and I question the practicality of it, being that she will grow out of it by next week and it will never be worn again.
The coats on the Soia & kyo website are all beautiful, stylish coats, most with a little “edge” to them. However, I always check for the percentage of wool content on the label. Being from the “frozen tundra”, I always look for high wool content. I realize in the UK, it is not that cold, but for the high price tags of the coats, I would expect more than 55% wool. You can get that at JC Penney’s.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Barbara, I do the same checking for wool content and I so agree with you. 55% is what I’d expect from a cheap place. I don’t want to pay hundreds just for the design; if it’s expensive it should be because it has both design and high quality materials. Honestly that makes the coat a miss for me! Visually it’s cute enough though.

The dress is a big miss. Like Kate in the past, the DoS would benefit from sizing up and choosing maternity wear. $1,500 for an ill fitting dress that will likely never fit your un-pregnant body and will therefore never even be worn twice is definitely a mistake. This might be the miss of the year honestly.

      Delete
    2. Barbara, I have to agree about the fabric in many of todays winter "wool" coats. I was just talking to my daughter about how to actually find a warm full length wool coat these days. As you said wool content and tightness of weave.

    1. I wouldn’t say a definitive ‘no’ as a future patronage since it would fit well with her experiences, but if this is possibly the only patronage with an unbroken line of the monarch as patron, I would be surprised. Although who knows, it seems like a really great fit for her.

  15. Great philanthropy and so appropriate for the DoS. Big miss on the outfit. Isn’t it winter? She’s in resort collection. It’s a slim fit according to the description. It looks uncomfortably tight. Maybe she’s wishing she was not pregnant and st a resort?

    1. I think it's probably very warm inside the nursing home, other staff members are in short sleeve or even sleeveless. She kept the heavy coat for cover up afterwards!

    2. It's warm in our office, but I still dress season appropriate. There are plenty of wintry options that aren't all stuffed up. This looks like a spring dress, or yes, a resort dress (imagine that!). Not almost-Christmas time at a nursing home.

    3. It’s warm in my office & I have on a summer dress with a bulky sweater & winter boots while playing Christmas music. So nice to be able to make our own choices in a free world. Meghan looked terrific!

  19. Um...well...I like the coat and her makeup is flawless. That's pretty much where it ends.

This looks like a spring dress to me, not something for December. And those shoes are growing wearisome (although, honestly, I don't mind Kate's constant court shoes). The dress doesn't fit very well. Just an odd look all around.

  20. By watching the videos, the Duchess is better admired in this dress when she removes her coat. Meghan is delicious, if I can put it that way. She is very gracious and so delightful with her forms as a pregnant woman. With its beautiful little face, the chignon releases the neck and gives it a lot of charm. The look is better when you watch the videos, really.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The spring like weight and colour of the dress with all of that bare neck and then a wool coat? It looks quite odd to me. The dress is too tight but I think that whole figure hugging look is becoming a thing in maternity circles right now. Meghan is lovely, but never seems to get it quite right — parts of each outfit are great and then there is often some jarring note. A work in progress.

  23. Her head styling is great. I really like her hair today. The coat is just a coat, it’s fine but I don’t think it goes with the dress. But that dress. No, I don’t get it. It’s a very pretty dress, but it looks like a summer dress to me; in fact the whole outfit looks like a summer dress and shoes with a heavy winter coat thrown on top. And honestly, the wrinkles kill it. She doesn’t have to wear tents but please get maternity wear at this point. I’ll wait to comment on the engagement itself once we get the full write up.

  26. While I absolutely love that square neckline on the Duchess, once again this seems like further evidence that Jessica (or someone with no experience) is advising/dressing Meghan. It's very obvious in pictures this dress doesn't fit; I wonder if another option fell through for some reason.

    2. I think she is just short-waisted and her waist tends to be thick in relation to her very slim hips and legs. She is also small-boned and narrow. The baby is just making room wherever (s)he can find it!

  29. Wow. Someone should get fired over this dress. It's about 3 sizes too small (don't come at me about her being preg, there are plenty of wonderful maternity options, or better yet, have some fantastic custom item made for you) and it's a totally inappropriate style for the occasion and time of year. This is a summer dress. WTF was she thinking? Oh, Meghan, do better!

  30. Some nasty comments today. She looks just lovely. I love that she dresses the way she wants to, not looking at only red/green because it's almost Christmas. Several residents wore short sleeved, so it likely is quite warm there and Meghan knew that.

  31. My first look also was that the dress looks so tight and uncomfortable. However, there are some photos like when she's sitting, where she's looks so lovely, "English rose" like, that I'm going to focus on the positive only. I love the way the coat fits, especially the sleeves. The dress has the square neckline and little sleeves that she likes, and the grey print seems very festive, for her. :) I had hoped for red, but... A tight bodice is not something she's used to but I imagine she's enjoying it because of what it means.

It was very nice of her to make a visit to a place where there were few enough people to allow her to interact with every resident. Her hair and smiles were just beautiful, and she gave a very greeting to the not-deserving press. The people in the home were indeed dressed for a warm environment so she may have been smart to avoid feeling too hot.

I'm excited to see her. As far as whether the clothes are worth the price, I don't think they ever are.

Does she look about 6 months along?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think she looks great, honestly everything about this screams my style. I also like the way she conducted herself, she is touching her belly obviously, but it is just much more relaxed and natural. I know that’s a tired horse to beat, but this time it’s a hand placed here or there, very natural and also there is a belly to actually touch now!! I think the true haters will still find fault, but I think she was sweetly appropriate! I bring that up since I am one of the people who got annoyed at the over the top nature of her last appearance and I want to give credit where it is due.
I do think as other fellow posters here Noted she needs maternity now. It’s actually not the front I’m really looking at but the back of the dress. She is popping out. Everything starts to expand so the belly is pulling on the dress and also your rib cage expands and obviously your bust expands!!! But the dress obviously has stretch she was able to sit and cross her legs comfortably, but I think she is going to have to put high fashion aside for a bit and get on the retail (albeit high priced) maternity wear.
But overall a huge win, not xmas like but I don’t care about that at all!!

    1. YES!!! That is really where I saw that it didn’t fit - the back!! It was literally digging into her. It cut the same way a bridesmaid dress that had been altered too tight fit on me. Meghan is not at all overweight but if her back is spilling over the dress, it’s not fitting properly.

  33. I think it important to say that when expecting ones body temperature is very erratic and often on the warm side. It is possible this light weight looking dress fits Meghans needs at the moment. With that said, Meghan is looking very healthy and happy. Once again, I am impressed to know that she is fluent in Spanish. One more box to tick in her many accomplishments we continue to discover. I'm just happy to see her out and about before the Christmas Season begins. In closing, I wish to extend a very happy, healthy holiday season to all and much prosperity in the New Year. Charlotte, to you thank you for the wonderful gift as I have said before in taking us to places we may never go and knowledge we would have never discovered through the people and places we visit on your web sites. You have created an international connection among women/men and brought our worlds closer allowing opinion to be accepted and acknowledged and we are all grateful.

    1. One wonders if the person who overheard her speaking Spanish is Spanish or fluent in Spanish. Most residents of Southern California and other border states are familiar with basic Spanish. Perhaps a few words of greeting would sound impressive to a by-stander. The reason I ask, other than curiosity, is that the news is surprising, as there hasn't been any indication that Meghan was "fluent" in Spanish in her many, many articles, interviews, social media remarks and appearances or in any bios that I have run across. Is this ability listed in her official royal bio? I believe the fact that several BRF members speak French is well known and possibly in the official bios.

It reminds me of Kate's speaking French to French officials. There was a wide discrepancy in reports of her facility with the language at the time, depending upon the source of information. If she is truly "fluent" in Spanish--good for her! I'm not sure how many Commonwealth countries use Spanish as the primary language but I am sure it would come in handy. If she was in fact just saying a phrase or a few words of Spanish,as many can, and is not fluent it may be embarrassing if someone later begins speaking Spanish to her and she does not understand.

      Delete
    2. She lived and worked in Argentina at least for one year. Her resume posted on DM recently also showed, " fluent in Spanish", and some familiarity/understanding of the French language too. She majored in international studies and drama, which the former most likely would include foreign language courses of interest. Her resume was when she was applying for acting audition jobs way before the Suite job / may be in her early to mid 20s.

      Delete
    3. Anon 19:42--In Meghan's recently unearthed old resume published practically everywhere, she stated she was fluent in Spanish and proficient in French. I agree folks in So Cal and those living in other border states are more likely to know Spanish. And that resume was put together soon after she did her internship in Argentina. Having been in Toronto for many years unless she's had reason to use the language I'd wonder how truly fluent she is today. But I expect her command goes beyond a Spanish I class.

    4. The Duchess worked at the Embassy in Argentina and also spent some time in Spain while a student. The lady in the blue dress by the piano said in an interview clip, not shown here, that that the Duchess spoke to her in perfect Castilian(sic) Spanish. It is also listed on her acting resume that she speaks fluent Spanish and some French.

    6. Anon, I believe Megan spent a year or so in Buenos Aires, so her command of Spanish is supposed to be quite good.

    7. Goodness gracious, so much said to question the possibility of Meghan being fluent in Spanish or knowing something we don't know about already. Did we know Kate had beautiful artistic talent until we saw the program at her sisters wedding? In any event, I can speak from first had knowledge having a child living in Southern California. NO, most residents of Southern California do not have a little knowledge of the Spanish language. Enough said. It is honestly hard to read some of these posts that go to the negative. Its always the same followers.

      Delete
    8. I think since she spent the time at the US Embassy in Buenos Aires and studied International Relations that she most likely is fluent in Spanish.
Regarding the negativity, some people can be annoyingly negative, some people can be annoyingly positive, and some people can be annoyingly in the middle. It all depends on your personal outlook. :-)

    9. I'm not seeing how this discussion is negative. But according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 American Community Survey nearly 38% of the population over age 5 years old in LA speaks primarily Spanish. In contrast, less than 4% of those over age 5 years old in Akron OH, Honolulu HI, Augusta GA, Albany NY, Baltimore MD, Pittsburgh PA, St. Louis MO, Portland ME, Baton Rouge LA (to name a few) speaks primarily Spanish. I'd think it would be much more likely an English speaker growing up in LA would pick up Spanish than those in these other places.

    10. Lizzie,
I didn’t feel it was negative. I hope my comment didn’t make anyone feel called out in any way. If so, I apologize.

    11. cidell/ Anon 15 and all. Thanks for the input.I had forgotten about that Embassy job her Uncle found for her. I don't believe she stayed a full year, however. Was it a Spanish-speaking or English-speak Embassy? If English-speaking, I'm sure there were locals hired for housekeeping and other duties who could have conversed with her. I believe her time in Spain consisted of a holiday with some friends, who were all pictured with her at an outdoor café drinking wine and soaking up ambiance. (Ibiza?)
Some bios state her major was Speech/Drama with no mention of foreign language study or even international studies as a declared major. It would make a difference in a US college whether she obtained a BS or a BA in Speech/Drama. A BA degree requires a foreign language. That may have been French. If she had an international studies major I don't believe it requires a foreign language, surprisingly.
However, what confused me is that this information just popped up out of no where, followed by dredging up of resumes by various sources, tabloids to back it up. I also asked who heard her speak and wondered about their ability to judge what was fluent Spanish. Thank-you, Karen, for the information about the lady in the blue dress. Is she Spanish, did it say? Was this reported in the DM story?
Does anything on the official royal site or any of the Tig posts, tv-radio interviews, her numerous magazine interviews--in short, has any mention been made of her multilingual background anywhere other than in a resume and more recently than her college era years?
In contrast to the mention of fluent Spanish above, below someone says an old resume was found that said she was fluent in French and also knew Spanish to a lesser extent. One must take resumes with a grain of salt. It is literally a well-known joke that people pad their resumes.
Some commenters constantly complain about the unreliability of the unfavorable DM stories-until a favorable story emerges and then we are to accept it as undisputed truth. When something doesn't fit I question it. Blind acceptance of all information one reads is not a good thing. The tabloid attempt to drum up readership could put Meghan and the RF by association in an awkward position if she were to meet with French or Spanish officials and be expected to keep up a conversation. Then, if unable, is she to be forced to admit fibbing or exaggerating on her resumes in her early twenties?

Just reflect on all the stories recently put out by tabloids, both favorable and not. The feud story is dying a slow death, temporarily revived by a new Thomas interview. The Doria moving to England to babysit story-where did that go? The Doria spending Christmas at Sandringham story is now defunct. The many homes the Queen has reportedly given H&M now narrowed to just one-Frogmore Cottage. The Gloucester's plans to move still an uncertainty as well. The "bump-cradling" expert story was full of errors and contradictions. As one story is refuted or just plain worn out, another pops up in its place. I really don't think my questioning this fluent Spanish/French story is out of line in the context of recent stories.

I think it would be lovely if she were currently fluent in several languages. A surprising number of RF members are. I think Maxima speaks five languages. I believe the Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxenberg speaks six. Anonymous 19:42

By the way, Castilian Spanish is not spoken in Argentina.

    12. As far a I know she's spent time in Spain and Argentina during university, but the Madrid portion is rarely mentioned. There's a clip of her doing a telenovela style Suits skit and speaking in Spanish. Also, Nacho, Harry's polo buddy, said she spoke "perfect" Spanish back in summer. Maybe this is the first time you've heard of her speaking Spanish, but it's been spoken about before.

    13. Sorry, can't let this drop. I made an innocent comment that has exploded. Meghan herself on the Craig Clayborn show said that she "speaks fluent Spanish". You can go on line and find the interview. She said the Casstilian Spanish that she speaks fluently lends itself in many ways to the Italian language. She also said that she has studied years of French but has forgotten it. She referenced her language skills in speaking about her time working in Argentina. I think this women is great and do not have need to investigate at great length every single comment made about her. I take her on face value.

  34. She looks lovely and the dress, coat and shoes are gorgeous, but I do agree with most of the comments here that it's past time to move into maternity wear. The dress is too tight all of the way around. I do also think that it looks a bit summery for the time of year too. Still lovely though and I am happy she's still so invested in the arts.

    1. El--Madrid? That would explain the Castilian accent. I must admit I don't scour the news for tidbits and must have missed the Nacho interview. There is a Sky News story about the nursing home visit that quotes Ms. Serrano's report of speaking with Meghan. It was the only one I could find that mentioned Ms. Serrano, other than the local story. It did not mention a conversation in Spanish, however. I did not access the Twickenham story as it required agreeing to invasive "cookies." I am surprised that Sky News and other outlets did not pick up on the Spanish conversation part. The large outlets usually keep an eye on local news about an event. It makes me wonder what else these news outlets fail to mention. Her speaking Spanish is a useful talent and good PR . Anon 04:47

  35. Great to see the Duchess of Sussex visiting those retired actor/actresses living in the center. I’m sure they were appreciative of the visit. She speaks fluent Spanish. I would enjoy hearing her speak. Her calligraphy is flawless. The Duchess looks lovely. The dress does appear tight but if it is comfortable to her, then what is my opinion, other than an opinion. A cute dress, to me, otherwise. Charlotte, thank you for all the historical facts re the Brinsworth House.

  36. Ok, so the engagement was very nice. It will be interesting to see if Meghan does eventually get this as a patronage or if it will be something that the Queen keeps for Charles to take on. I did find the exchange with Josephine Gordon about children very interesting.

  37. The cut and seams on this couldn't have made it a harder fit on pregnant curves. I'm not even that impressed with the finish on the model - a lot of pursing and whiskering. Theoretically I love it - the fabric is great and the cut with a little drama in the neckline and slreves is interesting, but application is a miss.

As far as the spring/resort feel of it, I wonder if it was quite warm in the facility. I know many senior homes are kept very toasty, and she may be running hot anyways (I always did pregnant). She may have chosen her outfit to deal with that fact

    ReplyDelete
  38. She looks so radiant - I am very pleased to see Megan out to visit a charity that allows her to keep aiding the same causes she cared about in the past. How lovely, indeed, Charlotte, to learn she visited the Californian branch of this charity long before Harry came in her life.

Whilst I understand the comments around the dress appearing too summery for December, I am rather convinced this was not a random decision. If you ever visited a seniors' place, they are all overheated. I am convinced it was planned so that she feels comfortable (also, if you have been pregnant, you know how the hormone changes often cause you to get overheated very quickly). It's a pretty dress, although I would have not advised Megan to choose it in this size at this point in time, given the fit.

As far as the Soia & Kyo coat is concerned, it is one Megan had before she moved to the UK. She has a couple of coats / trench coats from this label (it is relatively popular in Canada, not a bad quality/price ratio).

  39. Lovely! How appropriate that she is visiting those formerly in the entertainment industry. She will be able to relate better than other royals. What joy she brought to them today! We just visited several seniors with a troop of kids & the delight it gave to them was so much more than the effort we put in. Such a nice event this time of year!

As far as her clothes, as someone else said, the tight-fitting, stretch maternity style has been fashionable for the past 10 years in the US. That dress could have passed for maternity if no one knew specifics. That said, I personally don't like the tight look but it's very typical & fashionable for where she is from. Also, for those saying it's not warm enough for winter, I suggest you go visit seniors. They keep their homes VERY warm. I need to intentionally wear short sleeves because every senior place I've ever visited is so hot that I'd be sweating badly if I wore winter clothes. Just a little insight :).

My perspective on appearance is first on countenance & I think she looks absolutely lovely! The kindness & care she is showing and the dress is lovely on her. So nice to see her again!

  41. Good news to see Meghan in her acting root, I think a good way to direct her charity area, it's natural, but dress does work well, too tight to pregnant woman, it seems unconfortable, she committing same mistake that Catherine did in her first pregnacy, to use clothes isn't maternity wear, the coat is lovely, but doesn't don't need to be tied, I love her hair and skin.

  42. Everything besides the dress is great! The dress is a huge miss for me, ill fitting, not the best color choice/fabric weight for the time of year....and on top of all that, it looks cheap to me, which I know it's not! Even the picture of the dress in the ad looks bad, so it's not just the fit. Meghan does look like she is feeling well, which is fabulous.

I'm obviously in the minority here, but I actually really like the dress. The color palette is soft and pretty and suggests silver-and-cream winter themes. I adore the sleeves and the cut of the bodice. It is a little tight, but I also notice puckering and creasing on the model, as well. I think Meghan looks really nice.

This charity!! I love it -- I didn't know charities like this existed! And I love that it's something that can connect Meghan to her past life. I could easily see the Queen passing this patronage on to Meghan.

I really like the color combos and think it is a pretty look for Meghan. She looks happy and doing well, especially after another idiotic interview with her dad was just released. I do think she popped even more maybe after she purchased the dress. But - I like the look even if it didn't have the "festive" look to it. I can't wait to see them on Christmas day!

  52. Pregnancy has taken this already beautiful woman to another level! That glow! I do wish the dress did not appear so snug and was more maternity-fitted, but the neckline is very pretty. The first time you're pregnant it can be tricky to dress your (daily) changing shape and sometimes you feel you may get away without maternity wear for a bit. It's all new for her and a learning curve. Also, this is 2018 and there is no reason to abide by silly fashion rules such as wearing winter weight or winter-colored outfits. Just like the "no white after Labour Day rule", so outdated! Believe me that little baby growing inside you generates a lot of heat, so perhaps she was more comfortable in a lighter fabric.

  54. At the cost of about $1,000 I would expect the dress to be better tailored. And I'm talking about how it is on the model. Then put it on a pregnant woman, and the result is not so good. Also, it's not the right type of dress for this type of engagement. I would think this is more of a dinner or evening dress, with the exposed chest and low cut back.

  56. I like Meghan's look today. The softness of grey and white is just lovely. The dress has a Regency or Jane Austen period vibe- very nice dress to visit a period house. I like the dress and Meghan looks lovely, and very "period" in it, although it appears a bit tight. I also like the coat, a silhouette that Meghan seems to favor. I saw an interview of the designer of her engagement photo-op white coat who said that it is a silhouette that Meghan has favored and worn for a long time. Wearing it open with the tie at the back is done frequently by those of us who live in climates that require a coat to be a coat, although I am under the impression that Brits like things belted and buttoned. For example, when wearing a shirt dress, Kate seems to wear it all buttoned, and Meghan seems to wear it with the collar open; it's just a style preference. I found it interesting that Meghan said she was "feeling very pregnant" which to me means that baby is very active. By the way, I saw a picture recently of a beautifully pregnant Crown Princess Mary of Denmark in a stunning red velvet gown, bejewelled and tiared, cradling her baby bump tenderly. It was an official portrait of her pregnancy with her twins. The picture was featured in a series of photos of royals cradling their baby bumps, probably a response to the brouhaha over Meghan's 'cradling." There were two of Kate. I don't have the link, but it was an Australian site, 9Honey, I believe.

  58. She may be feeling especially pregnant because that dress is way too tight. The picture of her seated signing the visitor's book looks as if she's about to pop out of the top too. I echo the sentiments here- the time for bespoke maternity wear is now!!! She looks like she's at least 6 months along don't you think? I believe Baby Sussex will arrive late Feb or early March! I hope she and Harry have a lovely Christmas before the lovely chaos of kids takes over! Great engagement for her, lovely to see her without the snarking!!!

  59. Lovely engagement, horrible dress! The neckline and shoulders remind me of an 18th century low neckline style. The dress looks like it's more for spring/summer, especially with the open back. I think Meghan should be wearing a good fitting maternity dress. That said, I hope to see her taking on patronages that have to do with the arts. It would be a good fit for her, unlike that dress!

Also love that coat - wow. She's sticking to her color palette, and I like that about her. 63. Loving that coat and hairstyle. But the dress is a miss for me and NOT for being too tight but for being inappropriate for the occasion. Since when one wears white cocktail dress with cut out back and summer print for a christmas visit to a care home? This dress, suitable for some kind of garden party or reception, is nothing I would expect for this event. It makes her less accessible, IMO it would be better to wear something wintery, cosy, seasonal, warm. Seeing her bare back and shoulders makes me cold! :D
Overall, she looks lovely though. Excellent engagement to finish this year! :)

  64. She appears warm, and kind, interested in the residents and the charity, a natural patronage for her too. The dress is a mess. 1. I agree about liking the floral print, the color, the cut, but not the fit while pregnant at this stage and not in December. I am all for showing off a pregnancy and "Seraphine" does it quite nicely. It just looks like it feels tight, kind of like how I feel when I try on something from ten years ago :P.

      Delete
  65. Why pregnancies, necessarily? I'm seven months pregnant, and so far I'm wearing clothes that are not "pregnancies" wide like balls. Every pregnant woman today wears clothes where she feels comfortable. And right now, this dress is going very well for the Duchess and it’s not going to wear an outfit where she feels stifled. I see her very comfortable in this beautiful sensual dress of a pregnant woman. The duchess carry it, but it serves the bodies of others why?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Well..let’s say that at least she looks healthy and happy.
The outfit is probably the worst she’s ever worn until today, nothing to save about that.

  67. Meghan's appearance today reminds me of how often she surprises with her wardrobe choices. She does not wear what is expected or predicted, and I think that draws comments about how inappropriate or not royal her choice is, and therefore is not the "right" choice. I certainly wouldn't have expected her to wear what appears to be a summer weight fabric which is beautiful btw. However, she looks lovely, and glows with happiness. Besides, if Meghan aspired to what some consider perfection or appropriate, what would we have to talk about, mmm?

    ReplyDelete
  68. If she had worn the dress in the spring or summer and it fit appropriately, I would probably have a different take on it. But the way she wore it was a really big miss.

    ReplyDelete
  69. At first glance the neckline and sleeves is very jane Austen. Like she stepped out of “Pride and Prejudice.” Meghan is lovely and glowing. The taffeta fabric makes it holiday season appropriate, I think it just would work better for her next year when she isn’t expecting. The tailoring seems to pull and taffeta is such tight fabric without any give. There is a Seraphine dress that is claret with a front knot and long sleeves that would have been cheerful and likely more comfortable. I’m trying to figure out if she purposely doesnt invest in maternity wear so she can have the items taken in and re wear not pregnant in the future. I can only recall one H&M maternity dress. Is she not teaching Seraphine because she thinks that’s Kate’s brand? One thing she could take from Jane Austen’s era is the love of the empire waist. A lot more flattering cut.

Hair and makeup are gorgeous and I don’t hate the look, just think it’s time to embrace maternity styles. There are plenty of lovely brands that will still showcase the bump.

After my initial surprise (which was that she wore a pattern), I decided that she looks very beautiful. It's still a bit of a shock to see that she's pregnant, for some reason, but she looks great and is such a sweetie. It'll probably take me some time to recover.... When the entire world is abundantly aware you're pregnant, you've not got to draw much attention to it. First pregnancies are always tricky for the new mums in terms of wardrobe. Kate struggled with adopting maternity fashion herself in her first pregnancy. "She clapped her hands and swayed in time to the music and later chatted to Rosario Serrano, 87, a former Flamenco dancer and singer who was accompanying the music with a bangle made of bells.

Ms Serrano, originally from Madrid, said Meghan spoke to her in fluent Spanish without an accent. She added: "She was telling me about her life and her acting, she was talking about everything. She said she started doing a job she enjoyed then she met Harry."

    1. Apparently the fluent Spanish-speaking story is not a "gutter press" "smear."

Thank-you for the story from a local newspaper. I find such articles more credible than the tabloid ones. There is still an effort to report news reliably. not just to draw clicks.
Apparently Meghan felt comfortable talking about herself to the lady in the blue dress (the lady sitting under the photo of the Queen), now identified--who looks and sounds like an interesting person to get to know as well. (What 87 year old woman is brave enough to go sleeveless-she looks fantastic) I think it would be a great story for KP social media. Perhaps it is already there. This is the way to counteract negative press. Unfortunately, some of the tabloid writers have spoiled their copybooks and have doubtful credibility. I really can see the value of separate PR offices or at least separate writers for the two families. The volume of activity amongst the four, not to mention the apparent need to counter unfavorable tabloid stories- has increased to a point that requires more staff, at the very least.
Perhaps Meghan spoke Spanish because the woman does
not speak English? Regardless, it made the conversation private, just between Ms. Serrano and Meghan. A lovely gesture. Anonymous 04:47

I loved Meghan's hair today - similar to the awards presentation - and she looks lovely. I thought the coat was a good one at this stage of her pregnancy as well. I'm not in love with dress for a couple of reason. First, while I'm not familiar with the brand - Brock Collection - I don't like that it's a multi-paneled dress and a floral print. Heavily paneled and for my taste, that's too much seaming for a floral print. It's also taffeta - a fabric I'm not very fond of as it is thin and shows wrinkles easily (I made the mistake of making a party dress out of taffeta in my teens).

I also agree with those of you that didn't think it was right for the occasion. The dress description does say, "complete a ladylike evening ensemble by styling it with statement earrings." I hope Meghan is planning on wearing it later this month at an evening event.

I would love to see this dress in a solid, different fabric, in perhaps a violet color or some other romantic color, bespoke for Meghan - I believe it would be lovely. :-)

I like both dress and coat. I like it in cut and print and I think they are very well matched. I agree with many about the Jane Austen atmosphere. It's just not the right season for that dress... as for the engagement, it's a very nice one and Meghan showed her usual warmth.

  84. Meghan's engagement today reminds me of a film I love and have watched many times. The title of it is "Quartet" and it was directed by Dustin Hoffman and features actors such as Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, and Michael Gambon. It is about a group of senior adults who live in a care home for retired professional musicians. In the film, the name of the home is "Beecham House." It is interesting that the home Meghan visited also starts with the letter "B". I highly recommend viewing this film. It is a reminder to all of us that aging does not have to mean a loss of vitality.

    1. I remember that film, Sarah. Someone else above also mentioned it. I have pleasant memories from it. Besides, it features some of my favorite actors.

  85. I am still trying to assess this dress... so it’s made out of taffeta- and many seams. I actually think the fabric is beautiful, I agree with the Jane Austen air of the dress, btw is my personal Favorite!!! I think the designer shouyhave done something more flattering with the bottom half. I hope Meghan keeps up her creativity!

  86. I haven't read any other comments yet, but my thoughts are that she looks very pretty; she is quite charming, poised, engaged, and personable; the coat is to die for; the dress is a big miss! I find it unattractive as a maternity dress, very bare for a winter day dress, too tight and uncomfortable-looking.

  87. I applaud her for her response to the "No, I had a career" answer! The motherhood/career woman/working mother debate is filled with places to misstep, and you are much more likely to offend as to support while talking with someone who did it differently than you. Good job Meghan! A modern and kind lady all around.

  88. I have to say, that Meghan may not feel cold in UK after filming seven years in Canada. I am from Canada, from the same city where she was staying, and it was around +2 yesterday, however, my son was wearing a t-shirt for a short walk outside. He was apparently "too hot", lol.

  89. Actually, the more pictures I see of Meghan in this dress, the more I like it. I think she looks beautiful and elegant, especially when she moves. I have noticed Meghan makes everything she wears look beautiful in motion. I love the period look of the dress, both the style and the beautiful toile fabric, and her choice is very festive. She dressed up for her hosts and embodied the happy and celebratory spirit of the visit. The silhouette of the dress is beautiful, and she looks especially sexy and beautiful in her pregnancy.

I really like the coat, her makeup and her up-do but this dress is a major miss for me. at first glace with the coat on I was like ok this could be good, then the next photo minus coat I was taken aback:( way too many seams and panels and wrinkles and it just seems like she's about to burst out of the dress, way too small for her, skin roll over hang in the back is not a good look. the top and shoulders seem way out of proportion to the bottom of the dress. (anyone seen the movie steel magnolia's with the dancing scene at Julia Roberts wedding reception and the comment made on a dress?? im sorry but it looks like that comment!) I agree with the others, this is not the dress for the season or event or even a pregnant lady. Total miss. maternity wear asap.

on another note, I do wonder how much time she has spent writing her name over and over and over to get it perfect like that, that's lots of free time.

  91. I hate to say it but this dress was truly a horrendous choice. I watched the video and every time she sat down I cringed, worried that it was going to split open! It was all wrong for the season (short sleeves and color, looked like a summer frock), and WAY too tight and ill fitting. It drew attention in very unflattering ways and was pressing up her bust in an ill-fitting manner. I’m pregnant with my fourth and I know the difficulty of dressing a growing body but looser clothing like Kate wore is always a good choice. I am shocked any staff let her out of the house! I adore Meghan and am not usually critical of her or her clothing choices. But she seriously needs to get into maternity wear and get some trusted opinions on her clothing choices.

  92. I like the dress overall; I think it is quite pretty. The colors look nice 2ith the coat and I love the cap-like sleeves. Looking more closely at the pictures though, it is very tight on her all over--wrinkled and puckering everywhere. I don't think a body-hugging sillouette is bad on an expectant mom,I just think it should fit right like her black gown she wore to the British fashion awards. In my opinion that one was an A++! Meghan, if body-hugging clothing is what you're going for, maybe maternity wear with forgiving fabrics is the answer. I still think she looked very pretty overall. With warm wishes to everyone for a Merry Christmas from Wisconsin, U.S.A. :)

  93. Does anyone think that Meghan wore this very form fitting dress for a specific reason? There is an Instagram video which I saw from this event where Baby Sussex is being very active and you can see the baby's foot through Meghan's stomach!!!

IMO, this is a way for Meghan to say "up yours" to all those people who think her pregnancy and "bump" holding is fake!

I love Meghan's way of communicating when she can't come right out and defend herself directly!

    2. Well, you can choose a number of stretchy fabrics that will show even more without looking so tight, imho.

I did not realize people thought her pregnancy was fake? and I didn't realize there was a video where you could actually see the babys foot, do you have a link for that?

    4. I'd be surprised, Tropical Girl, if sending a message of "up yours" (as you put it) as a big concern of Meghan's when she dressed for this royal appearance. I think if it was, that doesn't bode well for the future. But I have to admit, this dress is such an odd choice for December and looks so uncomfortable from the front and the back, I suppose that's a possibility.

  94. It's possible the Duchess wore a light weight dress under her cozy coat to avoid getting overheated once inside the building. It's common to feel very warm when pregnant. That's why some avoid summer pregnancies! Additionally, when it's cold the heat is often turned on full blast. Even when not pregnant this over compensation can be stifling.

Those who are used to being photographed by the media know the camera adds weight. They also know unless they are emaciated, large, tent like outfits make one look huge in a photo. I believe this is why celebrities over the past years have opted out of wearing traditional maternity wear. Also, modern women are not ashamed of their stomachs. They embrace and love to show off their bodies. I think this is healthy.

  97. I think she looks amazing and lovely. As many have alluded to, maternity clothes need not be matronly tents.....if one can and/or wants to wear fitted maternity clothes, I say go for it, whatever the fabric. She’s beautiful! Interesting and fun discussions, so many different tastes and preferences out there, I like that.
