Lady in Red Meghan Discusses Due Date & "Fantastic Father" To Be Harry During Busy day in Birkenhead

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex travelled to Birkenhead, Merseyside this morning for a busy day of engagements, focused on meeting a number of local organisations that support and empower groups within the community.

The 'away day' marks Harry and Meghan's first joint engagements of 2019. The packed itinerary was planned to include meeting locals, highlighting Birkenhead and areas both the Duke and Duchess are passionate about. The couple arrived via helicopter this morning, Birkenhead is roughly 220 miles from London.

Their first stop was Hamilton Square where they viewed a new sculpture erected to mark the 100th anniversary of poet Wilfred Owen's death. His searingly honest words on the horrors of warfare made him a renowned and leading war poet.

During his childhood, Wilfred Owen and his family lodged in the backstreets of Birkenhead. He discovered his passion for poetry at a young age, but like so many young men of his generation he enlisted during WW1. Owen was killed in action in November 1918 during the crossing of the Sambre–Oise Canal. It was exactly one week before the signing of the Armistice which ended the war.

The statue, which is named after one of the Birkenhead war poet’s poems, ‘Futility’, is cast in bronze and represents an exhausted World War One solider. Futility was written months before Owen tragically died. It is known as a departure from his usual style, instead having a softer feel than most of his work. It follows a group of soldiers attempting to revive an unconscious soldier.

Move him into the sun—
Gently its touch awoke him once,
At home, whispering of fields half-sown.
Always it woke him, even in France,
Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now
The kind old sun will know.

Think how it wakes the seeds—
Woke once the clays of a cold star.
Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides
Full-nerved, still warm, too hard to stir?
Was it for this the clay grew tall?
—O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
To break earth's sleep at all?

The couple unveiled a plaque to mark the visit, before meeting local veterans and members of the Birkenhead Institute Old Boys, of which Wilfred Owen belonged to, and which played a part in the creation of the tribute.

From there it was time to meet locals. A large crowd gathered in the square to meet the royal couple including Eliza Morris who had a special message for Harry :)

Talk quickly turned to Baby Sussex with the Duchess revealing she's due in April.

People reports: "We asked her how her pregnancy was going and she said she was six months and she tapped her tummy,” well-wisher Carla Gandy from nearby Wallasey, who was there with her 4-year-old daughter Sofia. Meghan told others gathered in Hamilton Square that she’s due in late April."

Meghan also told well-wishers they don't know the gender, but either way she will be "thrilled with the outcome".

Harry and Meghan with a young girl who was overwhelmed to meet them.

A group hug.

Prince Harry joked with the crowd "Where are all the men?"

They spent over 45 minutes meeting people.

At the end of video below, Meghan received flowers from a young student and gave one back to her as a momento of the day.

More from Simon Perry's story:

'Rebecca Blundell, who was in Hamilton Square with daughters Lily, 6, and Lottie, 2, says Harry asked how to spell Lily’s name. “Meghan came up straight after and said that he’s going to be a fantastic dad,” Blundell shares.
One young mom was cradling her son, Oliver. “She said her pregnancy had gone so quickly,” the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, says. “I asked her how she was coping on those high heels. She said, ‘One day at a time!’
Jo Richards was lucky to meet Meghan in Chester, during Meghan’s first solo outing with the Queen, and again in Birkenhead. “I explained to Meghan I’d see her in Chester and she remembered,” Richards tells PEOPLE. “She said ‘I’ve changed since you saw me last.’
Richards’ friend Jean Elliott told the Duchess she thought she was having a girl. “Meghan said there are ‘strong opinions about that, but it’s a 50/50 split!’ ” says Elliott.'

Of course, baby names were very much on the agenda.

A video from Victoria Murphy.

The Mail Online reports:

'The royal couple were also given a babygro bearing the words 'Born in 2019' by eight year old Harry Edwards and Megan O'Carroll, of St Werburgh's. The schoolchildren were among 16 pupils whose names were pulled out of a hat by teachers to attend the walkabout in Birkenhead's Hamilton Square.
Told it was Megan's ninth birthday, Harry asked her: 'Has anyone sung Happy Birthday to you yet? No? I think we should...', leading the crowd in the song. Arriving a few moments later, Meghan said: 'I missed a happy birthday that was happening!' Told it was for her little namesake, the Duchess leaned down to shake her hand, saying: 'Happy birthday, Megan!' And when she realised Megan was standing with another Harry, she giggled: 'Oh my gosh, really? Megan and Harry? That's really sweet, that's so nice.'

Do you remember adorable little Eliza and her 'Gingers Unite' sign from earlier in the post? Well, not only did Harry absolutely "love it", he decided a hug was very much in order.

From there, it was time for an embargoed engagement. The Duke and Duchess visited Birkenhead's new Citizen's Supermarket - Number 7 Cafe.

Staff and volunteers are working to ensure that everyone in the area can access nutritious food and community services with dignity.

Meghan was interested to hear they are launching a 'baby basics' scheme to include toiletries and clothing for new mother's. Staff noticed parents were failing to turn up for appointments as they were embarrassed, the new scheme hopes to combat that and promote awareness; while their main objective is combating hunger, they provide other necessities for mother and baby too. They now hope to present boxes as gifts to remove the stigma. Meghan enjoyed tea and lemon cake during the chat.

Hannah Furness reports:

'The Duchess appeared particularly impressed with the initiative, proclaiming it “amazing” and revealing she had been in discussions with Frank Field MP about visiting since the autumn. The royal couple called Number 7 a “prototype for the world”. “You can say it’s got the royal seal of approval now,” said Harry.
Greeted by manager Kay Penkethman, the Duchess declined the offer of coffee due to her pregnancy but asked for a mint tea “or something herbal”. She also sampled the cafe’s lemon drizzle cake, made by staff member Caroline Noble from her mother’s recipe, and called it “delicious”.
Speaking of the upmarket-looking shelves, she said: “That’s the thing, the aesthetics are so incredibly important because it just feels like an experience anyone else would have [at an ordinary supermarket].” Praising the lack of plastic and customers’ ability to buy just one item of fresh fruit or veg, she added: “So you don’t need to get six of something? That’s really refreshing.”
The royal couple joined customers at tables to learn more about their experiences, asking questions about their backgrounds. One, a 69-year-old Buddhist monk named Kelsang Sonam, gave Harry a copy of a book entitled “8 Steps to Happiness” after the Duke told him he meditates every day.

Since 2015, Feeding Britain has been working to establish local pilots around the country, where local organisations work together to tackle hunger and its root causes in their communities. The initiative was piloted in Birkenhead, South Shields and Cornwall, it has now been rolled out in 14 areas around the country. The mission is simple - Feeding Britain believe hunger has no place in the UK in the 21st century.

The Duchess presented a fellow expectant mother with a basket of goods. Meghan told Angela "I would say that I should lift it for you, but neither of us should be holding it".

Very interesting quotes in Victoria Murphy's piece:

'Local politician Frank Field, who set up the visit, shared how he asked Meghan if he could speak with her again about charity work after she had her baby, but she replied they should do it "before."
"As the Duchess said, these are projects... that we can take not just to the rest of the county but to the world," Field told T&C. "So I’m going to talk to the Duchess before she has her baby. I said 'Can I see you after?' and she said 'No, before.'"
"I’ve been briefing her on how we counter modern slavery, how we’re going to take that further," he added. “She’s definitely a very, very active member of the royal family. And so is he. And also how much they love one another which is pretty nice to see.”
Field's final observation perhaps sums up for many what this couple offer: "What you see is this ability of taking the monarchy way into this century."

The Duke and Duchess unveiled a plaque before departing.

Their next port of call was Tomorrow’s Women Wirral, an organisation that supports women in vulnerable circumstances.

Meghan met a group of women including Carol involved in a Knit n Knat workshop.

The Mail Online reports: "In the knitting room the duchess spotted one woman, Carol Cullen, 71, who was wearing a T shirt with a picture of Cilla Black and the words 'Talented Carol Sings Cilla. After Ms Cullen embraced the duchess, Meghan asked her what her favourite song was. How Much Is That Doggie In The Window, she replied. 'My grandmother loved that song too,' said the duchess."

Meanwhile, Harry had a splendid time participating in a flower arranging workshop.

More from Hello!

'Angela said the Duke and Duchess were "amazing" during the visit, adding: "They were so good with the women, they were interested in them. They engaged, they initiated conversations with the women and they were just so warm. The conversation flowed so easily, there was never silence, in fact it was very difficult to get them to move from one venue to the next."
She added: "Harry said, 'I'm a feminist'. Harry said it's really important that men are involved. It's true, you've got to be working together. There's no divide between men and women with regard to these issues.
Angela said the visit seemed to really chime with the Duchess in particular, adding; "Meghan was very clear about the fact that she really wanted to promote empowering women and our strapline is women supporting women. She said (putting a hand on her heart) 'Oh this is true to my heart'. She's lovely, really lovely. Very considerate to the women as well, very interested.'

Initially established in 2011 to support women upon their release from prison, Tomorrow’s Women Wirral has since expanded and now offers an extensive range of training courses and workshops for more than 6000 local women, including support groups around mental health issues, domestic abuse, and addiction.

The couple spent time with staff and women involved in the programme over the years.

More on the organisation: "TWW is a project designed to benefit all women aged 18+ in the community and is committed to reducing female imprisonment, offending, and to provide assistance to those women who want to make positive lifestyle changes. The women who attend TWW are not judged and integrate with women who want to share their own skills and experiences."

A very royal cake and royal baby cupcakes.

Before Harry unveiled the plaque, Meghan spoke passionately about her belief in women supporting each other. "We're both incredibly honoured to be here. I think we all know for me how important it is - women supporting each other. As my husband made mention earlier, it's also key that men are there supporting behind-the-scenes and very presently as well." Meghan added: "We very much believe in the work Tomorrow's Women is doing and having spoke to you we very much believe in every one of you and the courage you have, the resilience that is being built from you being here and just the journey you're going to continue to take". Stay tuned until the end of the video for a light-hearted moment between the couple after Meghan speaks.

Harry and Meghan's last stop was the Hive Wirral Youth Zone. Created by the charity OnSide Youth Zones, which is developing 21st-century youth facilities across the UK, the Hive provides a safe environment where young people can come and enjoy themselves, building key skills and raising their aspirations and confidence.

Harry and Meghan met talented young performers after watching them dance.

The Duke and Duchess stayed an hour longer than scheduled due to their desire to meet as many people as possible involved in the organisations they visited.

The Duchess surprised fashion fans with a serious injection of colour today. Meghan looked radiant in vibrant pieces by Canadian brands she's championed for years. The choice of red was undoubtedly a nod to Liverpool and purple is the colour of Tomorrow's Women Wirral.

You might recognise Meghan's coat as the same style she wore on Christmas Day in 2017.

The scarlet red coat is currently available for pre-order on the Sentaler website (with a shipping date for March). The piece is described as: "The Long Wide Collar Wrap Coat exemplifies understated elegance at its best. This style is adorned with all of SENTALER’s signature design details, including an oversized collar, self-tie belt, and Signature Ribbed Detail on cuffs. A stretch stain lining and dramatic back vent amplifies the swingy silhouette and ensure a fluid, feminine fit."

The Duchess wore the purple Babaton by Artizia Maxwell dress (with thanks to UFO No More). The sold out $138 piece is cut from matte satin and expertly tailored for a flattering, feminine shape. Meghan's piece has been altered to create to a smaller slit.

The late Diana, Princess of Wales, also favoured the colour combination.

Perth Fashion identified Meghan's striking red heels as a Stuart Weitzman style. They are on sale for $415 at FarFetch.

Meghan carried the Gabriela Hearst Demi bag in cognac. The Italian-made tote has a short curved top handle that looks chic styled as a wristlet strap, and an elegant clasp at the top.

A percentage of the proceeds from sales of the Demi went toward a £600,000 donation from Gabriela Hearst to Save The Children as part of a collaboration with Net-A-Porter:

'Gabriela Hearst is committed to make a donation of $600,000 to Save the Children. Please be aware that the proceeds from the sale of the bags by NET-A-PORTER will not be donated to Save the Children. Instead, NET-A-PORTER is helping to raise awareness about the important work that this charity does and the donation will be made by Gabriela Hearst directly. The donation is made up of the money Gabriela Hearst makes from wholesaling the bags to NET-A-PORTER.'

Meghan accessorised with her £50 Pippa Small Nosheen Stud earrings. They are made in Kabul by artisans of the Turquoise Mountain Foundation. The initiative was established in 2006 by Prince Charles to aid the revival of artisan industries in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Myanmar.

Meghan's ring is the i+i Crescent Moon Ring (a stellar ID from the ladies at What Meghan Wore). The brand donates 10% of their profits to Set Beautiful Free, a charity working to rescue women and children from sex slavery.

And Meghan's bracelet is by Bar Jewellery, by up and coming British designer Sophie McKay. Bar pieces are handmade in London. Ethical and sustainable practice are central to the brand ethos. It appears the Duchess wore the gold plated Wide Ripple Bracelet.

It was a terrific day filled with memorable moments. We'll see Meghan on Wednesday when she visits her patronage Mayhew. That night, the Duke and Duchess will attend the premiere of TOTEM - Cirque du Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall in support of Sentebale.

And this is an event where visibility at a distance is important so good choice.
I will have to see more pictures before I decide if I like the whole outfit, but for now I can say I love Sentaler coats.

    2. I was at the point where MM had convinced me that black-and-white was a color. :) I wouldn't want to see these color at every outing, but they are a lovely way to jump start a cold Monday.

Also read that she says she's 6 months now. That surprised me.

  4. Overall impression - a miss. The coat only looks good when open. The dress would be fine without the slit. Love the shape of the bag, but would like it better black in this color mix.

  5. Wow. Purple and red and any black -what an amazing surprise. She looks great and I have only one question -why she doesn 't choose lively colours more often.

  6. Lol. This woman is really surprising. Because I almost never wear bright colors, it makes me feel like I’m discovering the colors for the first time in my life. Lol. I squeeze and look at this red and purple like it was the first time in my life to see it. It’s flamboyant, I think. On someone else it would have seemed normal to me but on Meghan, it seems extraordinary because it is rare. I find her radiant and her face is very beautiful.

  8. Love the coat! It's not a maternity coat but because of the style, it fits her pregnant body. But she can then use it again after pregnancy. I was looking around for maternity coat online that is midi length and that is british made and not from Seraphina, but it's very hard to find. Most seem to be above the knee. Meghan seems to prefer below the knee and midi lengths more. I wonder if she's having trouble finding maternity coats of this length as well.

  9. Surprised about the bold colors but not disappointed. She wears them real well. Great of her and Prince Harry to honour the memory of late Poet Owens. Kudos to them on all the activities for today.
I'm impressed with the great fit of the coat when closed; it appears to have allowance for pregnancy. Hope they have a nice day, will be checking for update pictures. Still not seen a picture of Prince Harry at the moment but good wishes to them both.
While it's great to admire/comment on the outfits, the purpose of the occasion should not be neglected.

  10. So beautiful. I think she looks fantastic in both the red coat and the purple dress. She looks great in bright colors and, despite what the UK tabloids infer on a daily basis, the duchess looks happy and radiant and even the man standing by her car door has an ear to ear smile on his face. WooHoo!

  12. Loving the bold choice of color. She is positively glowing. I was pleasantly surprised by this bright choice. Hello magazine had an Instagram post of Princess Diana from her 1992 trip to India wearing a red coat and a purple skirt. They are certainly very Royal colors. Also vibrant and joyful. Love the details on the coat sleeves too. She reminds me of a walking valentine in the best way. There was another photo of Diana wearing a purple and red color blocked evening gown. Does anyone else think this is a subtle nod to her or just a fun coincidence? Either way I love it. She’s radiant and glowing

    1. Diana wore that red jacket and purple skirt sitting by herself in front of the Taj Mahal. Reportedly, Charles was unexpectedly elsewhere at the time. This photo was later re-created by William and Catherine amid great speculation on their own India tour--with William firmly by his wife's side. Since it is an unusual color combination, at least so far for Meghan, I suspect there is a Diana tie-in somewhere.

  13. Finally some color she wears these bold colors well. But the red and purple clash since there both dominant colors. If the dress was a lilac purple it would've worked the bag doesn't go with the outfit

Well done to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and to the town of Birkenhead.
Just read a comment that Duchess Meghan is wearing the colours of the Charity, not surprised to see such an intelligent arrangement. The purple does make the bump prominent but that's not an issue I guess. Love the slit too :)

Enjoyed this look, think the red coat will be a great re-wear, but the dress doesn't seem to fit all that well right now. Good to see Meghan in bold color, great chairties, esp the women's one & Wilfred Owen - dulce decorum est, pro patria mori (Owen).

Love this coat in red, and those red shoes are another happy surprise. She looks so happy and bright! 22. I hope when Meghan looks at the pictures of today she will not only see that she looks great in bold colours but more importantly how much more effective a bold outfit is on a grey English day. She brings a nice pop of colour to put a smile on everybody’s face, she can easily be spotted even from a distance and instead of the pictures being dreary shades of grey and black she forms a perfect focus point for the photographers.
As an actress she knows all about dressing for the role. And while bright purple and red might not be everybody’s cup a tea, it is the perfect outfit for this event.

  23. There was a thing in the US. “Red Hat Ladies”-based on a poem about aging and wearing red and purple together, even though “they don’t go”. They would gather by shared interests but wore red and purple head to toe, including showy hats. I can’t unsee that after seeing gaggles of ten to thirty in restaurants and airports together. So I did laugh out loud at these pictures. I like the color but don’t think she needed both together, however, she looks wonderful in many bold colors, and not every neutral she chooses. This is a nice change, and these pieces can be used separately with many of her neutral o things.

    1. My first thought was that it was a little too Red Hat Lady for my tastes. If there had been another color thrown in there somehow, like a neutral white or black, it would look better to me. Like a patterned white and purple dress or black and purple dress with the red coat. The two colors by themselves are overpowering to me.

Also, does it look like she’s lightened her hair? Or is it the coat making her hair pull a little reddish in pictures?

    2. Maybe not. Was it ever announced that she had had a 12 week scan at that point? I think it was assumed.

      Delete
    3. She was 12weeks exactly on the arrival in Australia if she is due on the 30 of April. So yes, theoretically late April (lets say everything from 23.4 - 30.4) is very reasonable if she had her 12w scan before the tour

      Delete
    4. Possibly twins or there will be an early birth. Or...Diana reportedly said she was due with William in mid-July. He was, of course, born in June. Since he was not thought to be premature it was speculated that she had been trying to prevent exactly what happened with George's birth. Mass media chaos at the Lindo Wing. If she gives birth at a hospital near Windsor or even at home as some tabloid headlines have suggested, it might further limit media gathering.

I don't recall any photos since the retirement home ones that show an unobstructed side view. I do remember the side view from the tour in that gorgeous blue cape-dress and some other photos from the tour. It is hard to believe just a little over three months at that point. With a late April due date it would place her in the same time frame as Catherine was with Louis just prior to their Scandinavian tour.
The Sussex's have shared-either directly or via pap shots- very little of their private life activities. This may be a decoy date such as Diana put out in order to maintain privacy. Who can blame them for that? It is really a fairly common practice among high-profile women who are subject to massive media attention.

    7. If she.s due end of April... she wouldn.t have been 12 weeks into on Eugenie.s wedding day - beginning of tour. I think she either meant around April 20th, or as someone suggested they gave a later due date to keep the public relaxed.

    2. I completely agree with you both!! The Sussexes need their own PR accounts and staff. It's ridiculous that there were no twitter posts until about 5 hours after their engagements! The whole point of the official twitter account is to showcase their work and the charities in real time. I really hope that with the move to Frogmore, the Sussexes will split their professional "work" offices. None of Charles's siblings share PR staff or accounts, so it makes no sense to me that the Sussexes and Cambridges still share.

Not only that, I'm really annoyed that Meghan's profile page on the official BRF website doesn't list her patronages yet. That's the kind of thing that should have been ready to go on the same day that the announcement was made.

    2. Interesting, I love those type of color combinations but my eye did react a bit to the shoes and purse. Not sure why though. What do you all think the shoes should have been? I am not sure what would have worked better. Purse maybe a dark dark brown? Maybe the shoes a dark brown also?

      Delete
    3. I also think the shoes are slightly too much. Dark brown could certainly be a good option (and certainly the same colour for the purse), but also I would suggest a medium cognac (on both accessories) could have been an option. Possibly a better one because it would be a lesser contrast with the red and purple and would have kept it more neutral (can’t believe I just wrote this, I really disliked Kate’s nude shoes and here I am advocating for a neutral close to Megan’s skin colour!).

Overall I just have to say that I am so very happy that Megan does ‘her own things’, from choosing the charities and causes she cared for before, to dressing her way and whilst supporting British brands, still remembers those ones she knows well from before. I believe that to be a remarkable achievement on its own. Hopefully she can stay true to herself and not get lost in all the pressure around her. Hart off to her!

My mom who lived in the NYC and has the best taste would send me gorgeous pregnancy outfits that were really high fashion for the time. I don't know how Kate and Meghan do it in those high heels and on uneven surfaces such as cobblestone and grass. Is there a class for this :)

  33. She looks beautiful, the colors are so lovely against her skin tone. Apparently she said she was six months pregnant and due late April. She does seem further along than six months. Could she be having twins? I had twins and I wa very pregnant looking at six months. Usually women who are slim and toned would be still quite small at this stage. I know that everyone has different shapes and pregnancy will show more on one person than the other. Sinead

  36. The photos took their time loading so I had time to picture Meghan's outfit in my mind. I thought a nice red coat and a very dark, almost black, purple. Happy surprise to see a nice bright violet. As I complain about her all-black-all-the-time I was thrilled to see this vibrant combination. The brown handbag was a miss as, dare I say, black would have been a better choice. The colors also reminded me of Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal.

The coat is lovely, especially the sleeve design, but I don't much care for the slit in the dress. The skirt seems to have plenty enough width that a split isn't necessary, but I'm not going to quibble since Meghan is actually wearing color today!

Everyone reports how sincere and engaging and considerate and hard-working Meghan is, yet people want to believe otherwise. Maybe jealousy? Or inability to understand that a person can be like that?

Writing from experience, there is nothing like a Weitzman shoe for comfort, support and style be it a pump or flat. I love to hear her speak off the top of her head. Her delivery is impeccable. We all know people who have this gift, it is one to be envied. I do believe that regular followers were not surprised by her 6 month announcement. Lucky Debby , hope you did enjoy ! Well .... colours Colors colours ...... YES ! And what a great haute couture colour combination , which has been favored by Christian Lacroix and Yves St Laurent ! I absolutely love the coat , she already has quite a good collection of coats and trenches , I am quite jealous of the way she wears that sort’ of coat, as on’ myself it just seems hanging like a mop 😂 splendid , just one miss : the colour of the hand bag .... why brown , matching with nothing .... never mind, she is as’ bright as a shining star ! And the day has been so rewarding , so many splendid organizations , and so many meetings with people , bringing’ attention on these’ charities which certainly truly help people in need .... I already said that I do envy the British having the RF , who make such a great work to make charities well known , it is so different than having politics trying to do it (when they do ....) ! Nd I certainly envy the British to have Charlotte who keeps us informed in such a professional way !

  47. I just LOVE to read all the details! That is the cutest little ginger-haired girl. She looked adorable with Harry. Reading about all the activities of the various groups is very inspiring; I would love to have the job of helping Meghan with all these groups. More and more, it sounds like Meghan is spending a lot of time investigating groups and we are seeing just the tip of her iceberg. Harry is as much fun to watch as she is, and the people seem so happy to have the attention that they and their groups deserve. As much fun as it is to see what she wears, the real joy comes in reading the full posts.

Also, I'm glad that Meghan eats something during her outings. I hate when food is prepared and the royals decline. I understand the philosophy behind declining, but Meghan sipping tea and sampling cake makes her human. And how amazing are those cupcakes and cake??

I just love her purple dress, with or without her in it. She looks terrific in the purple chair with her red coat and purple dress. (Bet she runs home and jumps into some navy.)

SO looking forward to Wednesday although it will be a tear-jerker.

  48. The purple and red shouldn't work together but she totally pulls it off and makes it work. I love it! I don't know HOW she manages on those giant heels all day. I give her props for that. I can't manage them at all and I'm not even pregnant.

  49. I am not a huge fan of wearing whole garments of such competing colors without breaking it up with something quieter like the cream shell Diana used in her suit separates outfit. I like some kind of neutral to calm the bright pieces down and tie pieces together. Simply wearing every other piece of clothing an alternating color starts to look like the combination belongs on a flag of some sort...just not my cup of (herbal;) tea. The combination maybe looked better in person. It would serve well to easily spot her. With the purse color, I think she was going for a neutral but no matter what color purse you put with this dyad I think is tricky. If her colors were a nod to the city and the program she was visiting a scarf could have tied the pieces together, solved tying in another purse color and broken up the "flag" blocks for me. She IS certainly in color, though!

  50. I totally love these colours, both individually and as a combination, they suit her very well I think. :)
Is anyone else here, who seriously think, that she deliberately said a later due date? I CAN'T imagine Baby Sussex would arrive in late April. :) But of course, we'll see and I can't wait. :)

  51. Oh my, I can see this being a polarizing color combination, but I LOVE it! Generally, I do prefer the Duchess in neutrals (partly my preference for neutrals in my own wardrobe), but this splash of color is cheerful and ensures she will be seen from afar. I can't say I love the combination with the brown handbag...though I'm unsure what color handbag I would have selected. I think she wears pregnancy very well, though she looks much further than 6 months to me! Everyone carries differently and healthy mama/healthy baby is the most important thing.

The red coat is so stunning, and really makes Meghan stand out on a winter day. I think the purple dress is an very stylish, and the low slit on the simple lines just elevates it to elegant. And I got a great chuckle out of seeing Harry in his purple chair. Cheers for Meghan being able to squat so easily to talk to kids. The woman is fit! 1. “I think this was Meghan's day- I see Harry as just along for the ride and to support her.”
I don’t think they intended it like that but I also got that feeling and that was a miss from their office.

With headlines of “Duchess Difficult” and Meghan being accused of being pushy, casting Harry in the supporting role is not helping their case. It is like HM and Prince Phillip, no matter what their relationship was in private, in public it was always HM’s day with Prince Phillip in support. Even though it was very unusual for woman at the time to take the lead.

I am really rooting for Meghan, so I get frustrated when their office miss the small nuanced things that will make a huge difference in managing the negative image some people have created. All they had to do was add a very Harry focused engagement. Maybe a stonger millitary connection or visit one of the football clubs where Harry will automatically be the focus.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous, I get the feeling that Harry is love love loving it! He gets a break from the constant attention and he loves watching his wife. He seems to be so grateful to have her in his life and that she gets it and obviously loves being the center of attention. I don't think that if you were not born into it, that's it's at all easy. It's probably a win win for him.

Almost all the comments are about the outfit.
As I am not a stylist, and I think the most important for the royal ladies is not to be fashion-models I will only say "thank you Charlotte for the wonderul post with a lot of interesting details".

    1. I’m not sure royal ladies can escape the ’fashion model’ aspect, not when there are the paparazzis and a gazillione cameras aiming at them. The British RF has been tabloid gold for generations. And consider ordinary women are judged all the time on how they look, how they do their hair and nails, what they wear, even how they choose to be while pregnant. For the royals, the scrutiny is out of control. Add to the fact humans have been fashioning ways to adorn and accessorize for thousands of years helps explain why the fashion and self care industry is worth trillions. That’s a lot of jobs and a good chunk of the global economy.

In an ideal world, there is a healthy, mutual symbiotic relationship among the royals, the media and the public - where all benefit. The royals help bring awareness to important issues, raise money/resources and hopefully do some good for these charities. The media get their tidbits and make oodles of money. The public get a sneak peak of the royals’ unique goldfish life. Sadly these days, things are out of kilter. With social media and the internet of things, everybody and the bots are now an expert and have a voice. It’s harder and harder to filter the vast array of information and misinformation out there.

That is why I appreciate this blog (and the Kate one too). It’s a bit more quiet, thoughtful and safer to dwell in. (Yay Charlotte!)

And yes, I love that warm red on a cloudy, cold wintry day. But reading and looking at the photos and videos of those two and their support group working as a team, the greeters and the well wishing crowd, the ordinary people working to help each other—- THAT makes me hopeful and happy.

    2. I think you must remember that this is also a fashion blog. It’s just fun to talk about even if we don’t like the outfit. Also. 3. Since the title of the blog is Mad About Meghan, the Life and Style of the Duchess of Sussex, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the majority of comments are about the outfit. Yes, Charlotte goes above and beyond to provide lots of interesting details but that is just a bonus for her followers. Personally, I'm here for the fashion and for the comments on the fashion. If that makes me somehow shallow then so be it. I will continue to enjoy and look forward to new posts. This comment is not meant to be disrespectful in any way. 66. I know I’m probably in the minority’s, but I don’t like these colors together! I like the red and the purple, but it’s too much together, for me anyway! Does anyone else find this coat looks almost..sloppy? Like, it’s too big? I found the same with the beige one though. Maybe it’s the style. I like the different textures in the coat! I’m also finding the purple dress looks baggy too, in the pictures she’s sitting down. Again maybe just me. Maybe she wanted bigger for comfort and then it ended up too big on top? Still nice to see color and I love the red shoes!

  67. I think the Duchess looked stunning and very happy. She seems to be very petite and short-waisted, and perhaps that is why she looks to me to be more than six months' pregnant. Or perhaps, as some have guessed, the due date she gave is deliberately later than expected, to avoid stress.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ok i love the color, but purple and red IMO are two such dominant colors that they clash. Would have loved to see purple with green (one of my favorite combos). But the shoes are fantastic, and great engagement. I love how involved Meghan is at engagements. She does a lot more than the typical meet and greet. In fact I've noticed how much better she often looks in videos than in pictures, just because in videos you see the warmth of her interactions and the confident way she carries herself, even if I still think purple and red are a color clash.

Just gorgeous! When Meghan decides to do color, she really does color -- it's funny! I, for one, really like the color combo. It's bold, it's different. That slit is everything, too. I adore the dress and am glad to see her in clothes that look more comfortable. It's hard to believe she's only 6 months along!

Harry and Meghan are so dynamic. They stayed an hour later than scheduled so they could continue to meet people? I mean, come on. They are the monarchy of the future, there's no other way around it.

  71. Interesting comments about when to have a meeting... before the birth. Of course, it's practical to meet now and get things going before she has more responsibilities. And it might also indicate a planned summer bonding with baby and no engagements and perhaps to get ready for a Fall tour. Could it be a preclude to a statement on mothers taking time to be with their babies campaign? Fun to speculate!

  72. Harry and Meghan seem to bring warmth and kindness to every engagement. I applaud their commitment to the work ahead.
Meghan isn’t going to follow anyone else’s rules, she’s going to wear clothes she loves. I notice the skirt slit is considerably more modest than the model. Kate’s made similar alterations over the years. I love the purple and red on Meghan today. Purple is a favorite of the Queen, and her racing silks are scarlet and purple. Thanks to Charlotte, we can see this was a combination favored by the late Princess of Wales. Red can work with so many colors and neutrals. This was a bold choice of a confident 21st Century woman. I don’t care for red and black, this is much more fun. The red shoes are a bit too much, perhaps a cognac shade close to her bag? She looks so wonderfully alive in these colors.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Meghan looks great in Red. Love the coat in red with red suede pumps, it would be a little more put together if she had a red clutch. It looks like she decided to take this dark beige handbag last minute. Otherwise the color blocking looks good.

    1. Have you ever been rushed getting out the door on the way somewhere and grabbed the purse you last carried because it was ready to go without changing the contents out? Maybe it was a time-consuming last minute phone call that delayed you or the dog threw up on your shoes.

Or the brown purse could be the one off-note that Meghan says she likes to throw into an outfit. Or--between the red shoes and coat and that purse that rivets one's attention, who is looking at her middle?

But the more pictures I see the more it's growing on me. They are both such vibrant colors and so they can hold up against each other. She has a beautiful skin tone and it doesn't wash her out. The bag is a neutral so it works fine to me. She looks so happy and glowing.

  77. what a great post. Thanks for all the information about this patronage. When Harry and Meghan are on royal duties they are a couple that clearly enjoy their royal patronages. They carry out their duties with verve, class, and enjoyment.
Meghan consistently hits it out of the park as far as style. THIS is style. She has an excellent sense of style and fashion. Love the dress, love the shoes, love the accessories. The icing on the cake is that purse! Ooh la la. She loves throwing in a fashion accessory that is edgy and so very stylish. It's the cherry on top of the sundae. I'm so happy that the royal family has this couple to represent them, because they do it so beautifully and with fun. Diana would be very happy with Harry's choice I think. They are the future of the RF, and I'm glad about that. All warmth and love. And they express it openly!!! Love them. Love her.

  78. The videos show how in tune Meghan and Harry are to each other. They are constantly and briefly connecting, whether its holding hands, or hands on back, or standing close beside each other, although some might see all this as a "unroyal" and "unprofessional." I think it's wonderful to see especially Harry's love and support for Meghan. And he's a real gentleman. He looks out for her, and his patiently holding a chair out for Meghan at the cafe was very touching. Meghan's comments clearly show their joy together of their baby to come in the spring. I think their relationhip is inspiring. Even the MP commented on their love for each other which is palpable.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I gasped aloud when I opened the page and Meghan appeared in all her purple and red. This is so different from her usual look, that I wonder what inspired it. Was it a day to honor Diana, or whatever Diana's reason was for wearing those colors together? For honoring the Queen's race horses? Did it have something to do with the visit to Birkenhead? I do like the red coat, but purple is one of my least favorite colors, and the combination hurts my eyes.

Meghan has occasionally used color symbolically, for instance during her first Christmas at Sandringham when she dressed to match Harry's hair. Or maybe the subtle green she wore at Prince Louis's baptism, which might have referred to Kate's love of nature. But I can't remember that she has ever dressed in gaudy colors, even on tour in the tropics. I hope the palace will explain the red and purple. Not having an appropriate bag suggests that it was a last minute decision.

This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
