Meghan in Brandon Maxwell for First Official National Theatre Visit

The Duchess of Sussex made her first official visit to her patronage the National Theatre this afternoon.

Earlier this month the Duchess was announced as Patron of the National Theatre, one of two patronages passed on by the Queen. The Times reported the Duchess joined Her Majesty for tea at Buckingham Palace to discuss potential options and the theatre seemed a perfect fit. Ahead of the announcement, Meghan enjoyed a private meeting with director Rufus Norris and they discussed plans for the role. Meghan will work with Norris as he strives to attract a young, diverse audience in the years ahead.

Founded by Laurence Olivier, the National Theatre is one of the leading arts venues in the UK. Their mission is to make world class theatre that’s entertaining and inspiring - and to make it accessible for everyone. It hopes to reach the widest possible audience and to be as inclusive, diverse and national as possible with a broad range of productions that play in London, on tour around the UK, on Broadway and across the globe.

The theatre's policies are very much in line with Meghan's beliefs and I imagine played a significant part in the selection process. A 2017 report shows a gender pay gap at the theatre close to zero. In fact it marginally favours woman, a figure far ahead of the UK average. Following  a year of shocking allegations in the entertainment industry, the National Theatre has long implemented a stringent sexual harassment policy. They are also deeply committed to environmental sustainability and have set annual carbon reduction targets.

Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre said: “I would like to thank The Queen for Her Majesty’s long and unwavering support and service to the National Theatre. We were honoured when The Queen became our Patron in 1974 and have celebrated many moments together including, in recent years, the Diamond Jubilee and the marking of our 50th anniversary. It is a privilege to welcome The Duchess of Sussex as our new Patron. The Duchess shares our deeply-held conviction that theatre has the power to bring together people from all communities and walks of life. I very much look forward to working closely with Her Royal Highness in the years to come”. The Queen was patron for 45 years.

Ahead of today's visit the Palace said: "The Duchess is a strong believer in using the arts to bring people from different backgrounds and communities together, and this first official visit to The National Theatre will explore the work they do, as well as meeting some of the talented teams and apprentices working behind the scenes. Whilst Her Royal Highness spent ten years working in television, her training is in theatre. As well as a double major in theatre and international relations from Northwestern University, the Duchess volunteered at a performing arts after school programme for children in underprivileged school districts in Los Angeles."

Meghan joined a workshop with members of the Pericles company, which was the National Theatre’s first Public Acts production in 2018.

Public Acts, which launched last year, creates extraordinary acts of theatre and community. Pericles brought over 200 people of all ages from across London together with six professional actors to breathe new life into the Shakespeare classic in a musical version.

Applause for the talented group.

Meghan was delighted to meet 13-year-old Blessing who is passionate about inspiring others through storytelling. She told the Duchess being part of Pericles allowed her to "discover more about what she could do" and improved her confidence.

Meghan enjoyed a performance of War Horse by children from Edith Neville primary school.

It turns out it wasn't the first time she had seen the young performers...

Lizzie Robinson revealed Meghan said she saw the group perform privately in December: "I snuck in and watched. I didn’t want to leave. It was fantastic. You guys did an amazing job when I saw you perform right before Christmas. So this will be like a take two."

The Mail Online reports:

'Talking about her own acting experience today, Meghan said: 'It's unbelievable to be out on stage, that whole sense of self that comes out...just so wonderful.'
The pupils then performed a short five-minute performance of their take on War Horse - with them recreating the WW1 trenches, historic Christmas Day football match and the end of the war. Kroni Pacolli, 10, chatted to Meghan afterwards and told her he never expected to perform for royalty. She laughed and went over to shake his hand. Kroni said: 'We didn't know who was coming, just that it was a VIP. I thought maybe it was the Duke of Edinburgh or George Ezra. But then when they said it was a female VIP I thought 'Yes! Rita Ora! I never thought I'd perform in front of the Royal Family and meet a royal! I've only ever seen her on TV. I'm speechless. She came and shook my hand and I'm never going to wash this hand again!'

Meghan discussed the programme with staff and the importance of encouraging young people.

In 2017/18 the National Theatre staged 19 productions at the South Bank, 10 across the UK, three in the West End and six internationally. Its extensive UK-wide learning and participation programme supports young people’s creative education through performance and writing programmes like Connections, New Views and Let’s Play. The National Theatre extends its reach through digital programmes including NT Live, which broadcasts some of the best of British theatre to over 2,500 venues in 65 countries, and the free streaming service On Demand In Schools, used by nearly 60 per cent of UK state secondary schools.

Director Norris revealed Meghan was particularly interested in the heroes of Greek tragedies, which she studied at university. He then said: "the Duchess has her own production to be getting on with at the moment".

The Duchess met apprentices who are working as technicians in various departments including carpentry, metalwork and painting. Meghan told them: "From all diverse technical backgrounds, you are all coming together to make one thing. It’s so wonderful."

Omid Scobie reports:

'Artistic Director Rufus Norris first met Meghan during a private visit last December. Her partnership with the theater is a “perfect match,” he told BAZAAR.com in a roundtable interview, adding that Wednesday’s varied engagement itinerary was “absolutely led by the passion of the duchess.”
He added, “She was very clear about the areas of our work that she wanted to get an insight into. Any member of the public can come and see the shows that we do, but the other work is obviously less visible to most … and she’s been very clear that it’s that work—the community work, the national work, and the educational work—and the representation that she’s very passionate about.”

Meghan selected a soft blush pink Brandon Maxwell ensemble for the visit; the outfit is based on a look from the Spring/Summer 2019 Collection.

Meghan's dress is a modified version of the V-Neck Mini Dress (with thanks to Perth Fashion). The sleeveless dress features a relaxed silhouette and fluttering hem.

Meghan also wore the tailored Shawl Collar Blazer.

The Duchess carried her white and gold Carolina Herrera clutch. We first saw it at Trooping The Colour last June.

Meghan wore her Aquazzura Matilde pumps. They are described as: "Crafted in Italy from beige suede, they have a pointed toe and slim shoestring straps that wrap across the front and tie behind the ankle."

And completed the look with a pair of earrings by Canadian eco-brand Ecksand. The $575 Tresses Bar Stud earrings are described as: "These bar stud earrings are created to fit all types of ears. Handcrafted in our Canadian atelier with exclusively sustainable recycled gold, they are the perfect minimalist-chic touch to your everyday look."

A closer look at Meghan's elegant updo.

On another note, I was happy to join several of my fellow bloggers to discuss the online negativity in the royal community with Elle's Alyssa Bailey. As we all know, it's a situation very much out of control and one Kensington Palace are struggling to deal with on their own social media accounts. If you would like to read it, please click here. We'll see Meghan tomorrow when she visits her patronage the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

  1. I will come back to comment on the dress once we have more photos, but I like the idea a lot more than her last few dresses. What I do love is the way her hair is done today. The slightly side parting is just flattering on almost everybody.

  2. I think my legs would be cold if I were her, but I think she looks very pretty!! I like the pale pink on her.

    1. Same. I would be in uggs lol. But then again she's pretty much driven right up to the door and she's only outside for a few minutes.

    2. Ha! Not only would I be in my Uggs, I would also be in sweatpants and a hoodie (I write this while sitting at my desk in my Uggs, sweatpants, and hoodie). Meghan always looks very lovely. The color of this dress is great on her and her hairdo is very flattering. I think what everyone might be getting at is that her clothes seem to run on the small side and like they don't fit her new body. Simply put they look kind of uncomfortable to some of us sweatpant-wearing regular folk. On Meghan's worst day, her outfit is 110% better than mine ;-) Thanks for the great blog and all of the respectful commenters.

    3. So true! And, as someone has pointed out, she lived in Toronto for a long time and she is no doubt used to the cold!

    4. Ha! When I saw her bare legs I was insanely jealous because it is currently negative 23 F in Minnesota! I feel that I am living vicariously through this outfit :)

  3. Stunning look on her today. I like the hair parted to the side. She looks classy and polished.
The skirt is a flattering look for her legs. The color is also very attractive on her.
She is growing into her new role with more confidence each day. Sandra from Canada

  4. I like this color on her but not crazy about the cut and style. Maybe I need to see more pictures but right now it’s a miss.

  5. The whole look is lovely, but it’s a shame she doesn’t wear more maternity dresses - you can see how ill fitting this one is around the belly. She looks so demure and pretty though! Light colours look so good against her skin tone.

If she does not want to , she will not , and mayI say it is her choice and we have nothing to do in that ? Sorry, but at this’point, she is the once concerned .....

    2. I agree with you, Penny. It's a pretty dress, but the pulling around the belly area is unfortunate.

      Delete
    3. I agree Penny and Iris. I noticed how it pulls and creases just under her belly then flairs out. It makes a strange silhouette. While it might have been modified for her, it clearly isn't a maternity dress and it shows. But that said, her hair is great and she looks glowing and healthy.

  6. like the outfit very much. I prefer when they mix designers as opposed to wearing 1 designer head to toe. Hair looks mature

  7. Meghan is glowing. Love her hair today. 😍

  8. LOVE the side part. While she’s one of the few that truly can pull off a center part, I still think a side part is more flattering on pretty much everyone.

This cut of skirt (a-line or perhaps full/circle?) is one we don’t see her in often, at least not for daytime dressing. With that jacket I think the proportions are tough to pull off while pregnant but I’d like to see some more pictures. The color is gorgeous on her.

Yay she’s back our and about!!!

    1. I really do enjoy the side part and the sleek updo on DoS today. It's elegant, professional and put together, in ways that her preferred hairstyle (the center part and side locks/wisps) doesn't really accomplish.

  10. Friendly reminder: Meghan lived in Toronto for seven years. Toronto is much colder than London this time of year, so the cold in London probably feels like springtime to her.

    2. I had the same thoughts. I'm in Chicago where it's -27F with a "feels like temp" of -48. I don't know the temp in London, but anywhere it was 30degrees F would feel balmy! No Joke! lol :)

    3. Also, I too was one of those pregnant ladies..... heck I still am one of those ladies that runs warm! I made a run to Starbucks yesterday (-10F) before they were to close for 2 days & I just wore a light weight winter coat (no scarf) & wore dress leather gloves as I hopped in & out of my house & car etc. It happens! lol :)

    4. Becca, I forgot you are in Chicago! I'm so glad you have warm blood. :) I pray it warms up at least relatively soon.

Regarding MM, I'm sure she dressed for the temperature inside the building. It would be very uncomfortable to bundle up for a dash from a warm car to a warm building. I remember bundling up for cold winter walks to the subway, and then melting (once I fainted) during the ride even though coats came off.

  11. I have never really been a fan of Meghan's neutral looks but today she is glowing! I love the way this look is tied together with minimal jewellery. I was not a fan of the shoes in the engagements photos because they looked so loose on her feet but today they seem to fit her perfectly :) Pregnancy really does suit Meghan and it shows in her stride today!

Also, I am swooning over her clutch bag, love it!

I love her hair this way and the whole ensemble, but not at all for this season. It's winter and this is a late spring wearing.

    1. I agree. It is the best I have seen her during the pregnancy, she looks beautiful, but wrong season. Question for Canadians, what do you wear in winter? Is it usual to be barelegged? I understand in a warmer climate but this is winter in London.

      Delete
    2. In Toronto today it feels like-25 with the windchill. In London today it feels like 2. Canada will typically get that temperature at the end of March or in April. In weather like that we would be switching out of our heavy winter coats into thinner spring coats. I still would not go barelegged yet, but maybe for a special occasion (like meeting a princess!)

      Delete
    3. Born and raised Canadian here who married a Londoner and lives in the UK. Canada is WAY colder than the UK. I get asked all the time "aren't you cold?" No I'm fine thanks for checking. The temperature in London is balmy compared to Toronto right now. In the city where I'm from it's not unusual to see women in bare legs in an indoor/corporate environment in winter. Of course if you're outdoors for any extended time you would cover up as much as possible if it's cold enough ie. commuting on public transit, walking to work etc. But if you run hot like me when pregnant, layering makes it worse and pantyhose is out of the question. My guess...she's feeling warmer than usual in her pregnancy, she's getting door to door pick up and drop off so bare legs are the most comfortable. I can't speak for all Canadian cities, but where I'm from the "seasonal dressing" is not religiously followed and seems to many very outdated. Wearing pantyhose is not something that's explicitly required either. Wear what you like if you feel good in it. If that means light colors and florals in January so be it.

    4. Hello from Toronto where it is currently minus 17'C. This is southern Ontario and it is minus 33'C in Winnipeg.

While people I know might go barelegged in winter with a cocktail dress, nobody is going outside today without pants, hose, or tights. In Toronto there is a frostbite warning, that skin should not be exposed for more than a few minutes.

Even in London, Meghan is not dressed for their winter. This is a spring outfit. And a white purse?????

      Delete
    5. Caroline in Montana30 January 2019 at 17:22

I do not understand why folks are saying this is just a spring outfit? is it the color, the legs, the shoes, the weather?? I truly do not understand, she is not just hanging out outside, she is getting in a warm car at her door and getting out and walking into a building, then repeating that back to her home. I am no fashionista but I think she looks great and comfortable and I don't understand why that is not just enough.

    6. Hmm white and cream looks lovely in winter. I think the idea that only dark colours are appropriate winter colours is a bit dated. Just as the idea that dark colours are not appropriate in the summer or spring seasons. Honestly, lighter or brighter colours during the bleak and dreary winter months are refreshing and really lift up ones mood. Also, I think fabric makes a huge difference. A beautiful wool or cashmere coat or even a dress in a bright white is just gorgeous in the winter. This pale pink really looks fantastic against Meghan's skin.

    7. So I'm from Winnipeg, Manitoba and have experienced -40C and it's awful. I live in NH now, but feel terrible for my friends and family back home because it's currently -50C with the windchill. It's extreme weather that you can't mess with. I have worn skirts/dresses to work in those temps, but if it's that cold, I'm pulling sweatpants on and taking them off when I get to the office. I'm also wearing a ski jacket over the outfit. When driving, you make sure you have mitts/gloves and a toque in your car in case something happens and you get stuck. When it's that cold, fashion takes a back seat. If it's warmer than -20C I might not bother with the sweats, but usually wear tights and definitely am not walking around outside for extended periods of time in that outfit. You can't do bare legs in those temperatures because frostbite is real and can do serious damage.

If you're doing outdoor activities (because to be honest, being stuck inside is just not an option - you can't hide inside for multiple days at a time), you bundle up. Ski pants, ski jacket, scarf, toque, mittens and boots with a layer or two of socks. I'll usually do multiple layers underneath. It's honestly not that bad if you're dressed properly.

Those extreme temps don't usually last that long - it's not like it's that cold for weeks at a time, but when they do, you have to dress accordingly.

I did an exchange program to Bradford, England a million years ago and was there from January-June. I found that the damp cold presented it's own unique challenges, but it definitely wasn't as bad as Canadian prairie winter.

    8. Love Winnipeg! Attended University there a million years ago! I'm from southern part of Midwest, and the students loved to tease me for my southern accent & the way I said "z". Fun times. What is a toque? That is a new one to me.

    9. Ha ha...I'm in Winnipeg right now with -40 C and it's not all that bad. The clear blue skies & sunshine are incredible! We go out, live our lives and are grateful for living in a beautiful part of Canada! Quote of the day: "There is no bad weather, only bad clothing choices". Dress for the cold & it's great!

Meghan's hair was the best part of her look today!

    10. London is just not that cold. There are rare exceptions but normally you can't compare it to Canadian winters. Exception might be Vancouver and area. We were in London in late December. Light coats/jackets, no gloves, no hats. More like fall or spring weather.

  13. The fit and flare dress is not to my personal taste in general. But, with that said, I am happy to see Meghan remain eclectic in her silhouette and designer choices. It is interesting to me that there is a world wide market for both high and low end maternity fashion in professional day wear as well as evening and the designer names that specifically work in this area do not roll off our lips. I think the trend of sizing up non maternity fashion had its beginnings when newer generations became extremely health conscience and more body conscience through diet and exercise. This is only my observation. I wonder about the comfort level of body hugging attire which I know is a personal choice. All this aside Meghan appears to be fuller in her face and absolutely glowing and healthy in appearance. Her legs and ankles have not gotten the memo that change is on the horizon, beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  14. While I appreciate the points about Meghan's tolerance for cold, I feel like her post-engagment/pre-wedding style at events were... More warm (scarves, trousers, long coats); I'm not advocating covering up more so as wondering why such spring-y outfit in winter. I've never been pregnant - does that make a difference, those who have, re: body temperature?
The dress doesn't fit right, as others have said,, but I adore the color and she's positively glowing! Such a beautiful lady!
PS: I *really* don't like those shoes. Boots? Booties? It's January and a daytime event - am I alone in not wearing strappy heels to work? Or should I up my shoe game;)?

    1. No, pregnancy makes your body temperature a bit higher, but it doesn't make you immune to biting winds and cold bursts. And anyway, that rise in body temperature only happens during the last two months of pregnancy, usually.

That jacket will look fantastic with trousers in the future! I'll have to check back for more photos of the dress, but the color is stunning. 2. It is a maternity outfit to the extend that it was custom made for her current body shape and size. But it is based on a non-maternity look. If you compare it to the original you can see they changed the length and the fit/pattern of the dress to accommodate her pregnancy but in the process it messed with the overall picture.

  19. The first pictures had me very excited, hoping for a maternity look that works, but alas the idea is great but something got lost in the execution. From the front it looks great, but some of the photos from the side made me very glad that the jacket is covering the fit issues. The colour is pretty enough but I just don’t like this nude pinkish colour by itself. If her jacket and shoes were a chocolate brown or navy I would be totally on board.
So I am sticking to my first comment: I love her hair.

  20. Definitely when people say that tastes differ, that’s true. Finding something wrong with this look, I don’t understand ! Because, in addition to this pale pink color that is perfect on her skin, I love this look and I will steal it without hesitation to wear it because I am also pregnant like her. But I’m not a big fan of strap shoes. Meghan is here too beautiful. This hairstyle, this color... it’s SUBLIME.

  21. I love her. Truly. I also don’t believe there is a rift between her and Kate. But honestly wish she would choose maternity wear now that her bump is bigger. This dress is ill fitting across the bust and hips. The color on the other hand is exquisite.

Love the light pink -- looks so radiant and gives her a glow. I for one am glad pregnant women can now wear maternity clothes that aren't big smocks or muumuus. I also love her shoes. 3. I so agree with you, this does look like maternity wear but more modern, Like you said not like the mumus of yester yr. I've been pregnant 3 X & didn't gain much weight but still you're trying to accommodate a baby jutting out the front with your clothing. Im really proud of #Hellotokindness and a bit blown away that hello! is tacking such a real issue!! very proud of our charlotte for her contribution and for keeping both blogs on a higher level. I really don't pay attention to other sites, I come here/kate for my news!!

But onto the DoS! She looks beautiful in this outfit, glowing is more like it! I like her hair like this, not too severe and I am in awe of her walking in those shoes, let alone when she is pregnant! As always I think she has the smallest ankles ive ever seen:) I like the handbag size/shape but im not a fan of gold accessories, I know makes me odd:) I like the jacket. I think this probably looks great when she's walking, but I have yet to see a video. I like the shape of the dress, not too tight and it looks comfortable, which I hope she is! all in all a hit for me.

Have a wonderful day duchess fans!

  36. Wow! Meghan is literally glowing, that pink shade also helped, it definitely suits her. Totally different subject I was so sorry to read of the negativity that has been “written” (I suspect just simply made up) about both Duchesses. This may sound smug, but I have made it a practice to never read any article about anyone ( incl the current occupier of the Oval Office), if the headline seems incendiary, move on. This blog is a great way to get updates without the invective that seems so appealing to many. Whatever my personal opinion of their personalities, (or style) truly, they impress me so much. This isn’t an easy life/job and they both do it with aplomb. Please tell me that the nastiness will go away soon....

  37. I think she looks exquisite today! The fabric and color are beautiful. She just looks completely shimmery. I think her pregnancy profile would make it hard to cover over smoothly; baby Sussex just doesn't want to be hidden! I even like her shoes today! I did not like them in the past but today they look great.

Speaking of negativity, which is an understatement, even "positive" news items are stated in an inciteful manner. Like saying Meghan is having lunch with HER communications director rather than THEIR director of the foundation's director. Like saying PM Jacinda came to visit MEGHAN and not saying she came to visit MEGHAN AND HARRY. One can't really stray from this site, and I actually mean from Charlotte's lovely reporting, without hitting such ugliness.

I liked the report of the old Tig days with avocado toast -- I'm sure all of her friends are just dying to say something but know all they can do is be subtle. Jessica makes it known that she's in London, Victoria Beckham is so happy MM wore her clothes, Serena says how super nice MM is, Camilla uses the same bag, even Bea and Eugenie have worn the same clothes that MM has worn.

Is it a result of general unhappiness in the world, I wonder?

  40. Meghan is glowing and stunning and can pull off this neutral color. Which looks more beige than blush on my phone. Hair and minimal jewelry is on point. My only gripe is that this seems more of a Spring/Summer look. I’m guessing she chose a neutral to have the focus on the patronage. Although, here we are discussing her fashion. I’m surprised she is sticking with such high heels. I saw her grabbing the railing when exiting on the video above. I think a shorter heel, block heel or bootie would be more practical. At least for daytime events. Kate wore a Tod’s Block heel yesterday. I just haven’t seen Meghan wear one yet. I find them much more comfortable but still elegant and professional. I’ve never been pregnant but all my friends say their feet swell and are in pain. I can’t help but thinking she immediately changes into her Birdie Slippers the moment she is safely in the car. Am I the only one?

    1. Every woman's pregnancy is different. I could barely walk in heels before pregnancy let alone during. But she walks very gracefully in her heels and doesn't look uncomfortable to me. Also her feet aren't swollen (yet). Maybe she'll be one of the fortunate ones whose feet/ankles never swell. I don't enjoy wearing stilettos and I love block heels and booties, but not everyone likes that shape. Maybe Meghan doesn't? Kate also wore high heels well into her pregnancies.

  41. these pale neutrals look wonderful on Meghan. She needs to get some help on proper fit and tailoring, speaking as someone who is very short-waisted and two sizes smaller in the hip than shoulder/bust. I had to have every work or evening garment tailored to fit. I know her body is a challenge to her and changing, but a larger size would help this lovely dress hang better. This happened before she became pregnant too. She can't buy "off the rack". That said, she is glowing and appears to be engaged and happy to be at work. They are lucky to have her as patron.

  42. Charlotte, I appreciate your contribution to the article about online trolling. I am glad that you and others in the article mentioned the UK media's role in stirring up trolling online commentary. I believe that everyone needs to be mindful of their words on social media, and how something could be received and interpreted by others. As I've said before on this blog, with the freedom of speech comes the responsibility to use it for good and NOT for ill or harm. While I do believe that both Kate and Meghan have received unwarranted and unjust criticism, in addition to a barrage of false narratives, it is apparent that such coverage has been tilted more towards Meghan. Neither woman should be pitted against the other for any reason. Nor should either woman be demeaned, degraded, or ridiculed by any media outlet (whether print, digital, or television). Personally, I have been appalled by some of the stories I see in the UK media. While we have a very different journalistic system here in the US that separates tabloid fodder from fact-based journalism, I don't understand why false narratives are allowed to be published in many UK media outlets. It is very disheartening and a dereliction of ethical duty and responsibility, in my opinion. But, what is equally disheartening and disturbing are the number of people who engage in reading or watching those salacious and dishonest stories. The undercurrents of racism, snobbishness, anti-Americanism, and misogyny fill those stories. Sometimes it is overtly done and other times it is more subtle and snide. The false narratives being published are giving those who troll a massive platform, and their comments too are filled with those same vile undercurrents. We have similar issues here in the US with constant trolling on social media. And racism, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia, and many other challenges are rampant across this country too. People who hold such belief systems feel emboldened on social media to express those views and to bully others, because they can do so anonymously or with a false name and identity. All of this bullying and toxicity on social media ultimately has a profound impact on our mental health and well-being, whether we realize it or not. Social media has also become a place where people feel that it is okay to constantly criticize others, rather than be supportive. It should not be difficult to be kind, compassionate, empathetic, and welcoming. It should not be difficult to choose words that offer support, encouragement, hope, and affirmation. It should not be difficult to choose fact and truth over lies and salacious stories. It should not be difficult to open our minds, hearts, and arms to others, rather than close and clench our minds, hearts, and fists to those who are different from us. It should be easy to choose kindness and to use our words for good.

    1. I agree 100% Sarah in USA - it's beyond. In a way social media has helped the BRF to control some of the narrative and timing. But it's also permitted the public to "pile on" without consequence. Very sad indeed. Diana would be livid.

      Loved reading the article Charlotte!

    2. Unfortunately, being a working royal puts one in the public eye, for better or for worse, and with freedom of speech and freedom of the press negative as well as positive things are legal to publish. In the U.K., they do not censor the press!

      Delete
    3. It’s not about censoring the press or even freedom of speech. It’s about checking media abuses.

Tabloid gossips aren’t news. They are entertainment. If reporters want to wax about their profession as the purveyor of truth and being the 4th estate, then reporters better act and write responsibly, accurately and ethically.

There is a vast difference between practicing good journalism by verifying sources and backing up stories with facts and ‘reporting’ hearsays from unnamed palace aide, friend, spokeperson, etc. Much of the stuff in the tabloids is false, conflated, and inflammatory. When we see columnists writing stories linking terrorism, natural catastrophe and genocide to Meghan, it’s obvious these are efforts deliberately designed to hurt Meghan, her work and her image. Racism, sexism, hate and anything divisive sell ad spaces, generate clicks and make money.

Free speech and free press come with heavy responsibility. Abuse such freedoms and we’ll lose the social compact that allow such things to exist in the first place.

  44. Thank you for the article link on the "kindness" campaign, Charlotte. It's hard to understand the visceral hatred some seem to have for Meghan simply because she is who she is- American, a woman, an actress, biracial, and not born into the upper class. The hatred is xenophobic, sexist, racist, and class snobbery. Perhaps all those factors are explicable, but what is not is the sheer intensity of the hatred. I think it must say more about the haters than Meghan. This image that the gutter press, and even respected outlets portray, flies against all that Meghan's friends have said about her, and all that Meghan reveals through her own writing and interviews. However, I'm sure there are more people who respect and admire Meghan or who are completely indfferent than there are people are are absolutely vile in their response to her. Honestly, I don't know what can really stop people from hating until perhaps they are eaten up by their own venom, but it is a step forward for the problem to be brought to the light of day, and discussions to be going on about how to at least control this. This nastiness cannot be good for the mental health of anyone, victim and perpetrators alike. It's good to see Meghan's continual joy in her pregnancy and impending motherhood. It was very touching to learn that she made a point of going to see the children perform at the theatre before Christmas. She has few patronages so far, but obviously they have her complete attention and commitment. Also, thank you again Charlotte for keeping this blog a pleasant place to find out about Meghan's activities and her.

    1. Unfortunately, condemning "nastiness" highlights the nastiness and continues the talk as much as the original remarks from a loud minority. I will continue to emphacise that giving these people a voice- whether in an approving way or disapproving way--still gives them attention. Some more responsible news forums will not print the names of those who commit well-publicized crime. You can't shame someone whose motive is to attract attention to himself and who uses any means to accomplish this. The only way to stop bullying is to stop rewarding it by attention. If there is no response there is no incentive to repeat. Stop clicking on these sites and above all, stop passing on the trash. As my Mom once said when I came home from school crying after being teased--"Stop crying and they will stop teasing."

My worry is that a kindness campaign if not done very skillfully will result in increased nastiness. The Golden Rule only works if the other person wants what you do. These are damaged, unhappy people who do the nastiness. What works is to hire enough help to properly screen comments or close the comment sections. Two highly respected royal blogs have recently shut down their comment sections. The nastiness was not given as a reason but it must have played a part in the decisions.

  45. Thank you, Charlotte, for your comments in the Elle article. The hatred and unhappiness that people allow to fester in their hearts and then put into online comments is beyond unfortunate. I am occasionally tempted to post something less than positive, but I remind myself that I alone can control the way I think and that when I give in to the negative thoughts (that we all sometimes have) it really only makes me more unhappy. I definitely don't identify with every decision Kate (or Meghan) makes, but I've chosen to make watching Royals a positive and fun experience so I just let those negative thoughts go. It's a very intentional decision every time. I know some people want to have an 'honest conversation,' but that often winds up with over-analysis and sniping and a LOT of guessing and inference, which isn't really all that honest. I save the honest conversation for the real-life situations I can't escape and that really require it. I wish we could all focus on the fun and positive - most posters here do, and I appreciate you all!

I was wondering if you were going to "promote" the campaing at all on your two blogs? I think that would be great. Some sort of branding for these blogs? - a tag banner that says "HelloToKindness" sponsor/aprticipant,or some such? Was that idea discussed at all? Thank you again Charlotte for doing such a wonderful job to nip the negativity in the bud. I know I do have my moments myself with a less than positive comment so I'm heartened by what Anon 18:04 said above in short: " I choose to be positive." I too will remember that next time, and if there is a negative point, try to phrase it carefully.
As the Duchess, thought she looked divine today. Love the colour and that's a great dress shape that's easy to make a maternity style out of now and re-balance and re- tailor for later... My one "negative" if you will-( see! there I go- oops! )would be the f bare legs and no coat in the winter when its hovering around 0 here.... It may not be temps like in the States- but its' still COLD! I get she's got limited exposure and she may indeed be melting inside... On the other hand- it's her "look" and she pulls it off. WHenever she's in tights- I feel for her- becuase I think she must be hating every second of it! lol! But the most important thing is the support for her patronage... which is wonderful!
My final thing- am I the only one here that thinks she looks "quite" pregnant? or? Have twins been absolutely ruled out? ( note- I'm just taking a wild guess here- I've never been pregnant!) Thanks again for all, Charlotte!

    1. I agree with you that the DoS looks very pregnant for somebody due in April, but I just can’t see that they would keep it a secret if she is expecting twins. Except for the public outcry, royal reporters would never forgive (and forget) the Sussexes for misleading them about twins. Can you imagine going forward with royal reporters being openly suspicious about any press release, or information provided by the Sussexes? And being able to use this to justify themselves. It would just exacerbate the current toxic situation.

    1. I'm a big Meghan fan but I firmly believe that in winter bare legs look awkward. If she was in sunny California where it's 75 degrees maybe not but in England when it's cold ... yeah it looks awkward. And I like many women used to DESPISE the pantyhose my mom used to make me wear. My skin broke out in hives, they ran if I even touched them against a hard surface, and they were miserable and itchy. I am stunned by how much hose has improved in just the last 10 years. Women now have choices of thicker "sweater tights" for the really cold days, regular opaque hose in different colors that look great with booties (my favorite is a pair of maroon tights with maroon booties), and smooth, clear, durable nude hose that actually matches your skin tone for the really formal events. And for pumps, it also is a great protector against blisters.

So yeah Meghan ... hose is no longer thick clumpy orange itchy hell. I feel like she needs a hose stylist to show her the different choices!

      Delete
    2. I agree re winter hose - and for women with less than perfect legs (like me!) panty hose are a must with dresses/skirts. One other thing: if she wears support panty hose (which look as good as regular) during her pregnancy, she helps protect against varicose veins later. Ask me how I know.

  57. Charlotte, I enjoyed reading the article that you linked to. I have always appreciated the positive nature of your blogs. Your blogs really are the best blogs on Meghan and Kate, in my opinion. I have followed the royal family ever since Charles and Diana married. My grandmother was obsessed with the British Royals. She died in 1977 so she followed them during the time whey they truly were a mystery. She kept articles on them and read any information she could find. I guess I come by my love for them genetically :) :) I truly don't understand why some people don't think they can appreciate both Duchesses. I think some of it comes from new fans that have become fans due to Meghan and Harry's marriage and truly don't understand how the Royal Family works. Also, I believe some of the negativity comes from some who, sadly, are prejudiced against Meghan for many reasons. Personally, I love both Duchesses and appreciate them for who they are. I am so excited about this double duchess week we have had with both Kate and Meghan having engagements. It is twice the fun. It is sad that there are people who, due to their hate, are missing out on that.

I applaud you Charlotte for being part of, and speaking out on the vitriol that has become norm in royal watching. It is truly a sad indication of the times we live in. When I first started reading your Duchess Kate blog, back in 2011, it was fun to follow such a beautiful young woman as she embarked on a new life in the British Royal Family. There was a sense of community to it all. I have been appalled at the hate that has been directed at both of the Duchesses, but most of all at Meghan. The hours you must spend, along with other publications, and Kensington Palace, sifting through comments must be numbing.I truly hope that we can return to a more civilized and compassionate time.

  62. I made the mistake of engaging with the haters a while back. Meghan was being cut to shreds. I asked why they hate her so much when they didn't even know her. I said she was a university graduate from a fine school with an impressive double major. I noted her love of animals as well as her humanitarian work and by dint of hard work was a multimillionaire by age 35.
I got a stupid response that I probably attended podunk U a school which n one ever heard of. Being a slow learner, I noted that I have three degrees from well respected Unis none of which is as highly ranked as Meghan's. To which a brainiac upbraided me for being a braggart. then, one mouth breather shot me the well known clever salvo that I may be educated but that I don't have common sense. Wow, that put me in my place.
there's no talking to these people. They're just pathetic.

  63. I am wondering if Meghan is going to take an announced maternity leave or if she will work right up to the end if she has the energy. There seems to be no stopping her with her currently announced present schedule.
With that in mind Charlotte would you consider doing a poll as to when the royal watchers think Baby Sussex will arrive? March, April or May. I just thought it might be fun to get an overall opinion as we are all guessing to ourselves.

    1. I think Meghan would want to work as close to the end as possible. But maybe it would be best if she just join Harry unannounced for the last few weeks. While it is admirable to want to work, it would also be inconsiderate to have organizations go to a lot of trouble to prepare for her visit only to cancel at the last minute because babies come when they want to come.

  64. While I love her in neutrals and am obsessed with that clutch. I think that maybe it would have seemed more winter appropriate to do a black blazer (she has plenty) with this neutral dress, her Victoria Beckham black mini vanity bag (I prefer a handbag with an actual strap for daytime. Clutches seem so evening and awkward during day) and maybe her black Sarah Flynt heels (seem more sturdy and winter appropriate) I don’t think she has any but Amal Clooney favors the “Emma” block heel by Sarah Flynt and I feel like that would be more practical for pregnancy and daytime appearances.

Both these women decided to take on a public role for life in a 1000 year-old business, because their personal aspirations and love for a man, let us never forget, exceeded their natural caution to run screaming from such a difficult life. Lord bless them both. Let us never take sides; may we always feel the nuance, especially here in the States, of why it’s different for Meghan. I’m an old Southern woman, raided in segregation. 74. Thank you Charlotte for this interesting post. Today I thought we had a glimpse of the Royal Meghan will be as she grows into her role. For the last two decades Meghan has successfully developed her solo Team Meghan and grown her brand as one has to do to succeed in the acting world. She has a very different role now in a country she had little prior knowledge of and is having to learn to be part of Team Meghan and Harry and ultimately part a the very large Team Royal all of which has totally different requirements. She brought with her experience from her previous role which has been both advantageous and detrimental. By and large I think the previous year has been successful albeit with the vibe of a super star, not easy to sustain. Today she seemed different perhaps more gravitas and I sensed how she might develop over the next decade into a woman much loved and respected by the peoples of the UK and the Commonwealth. It was a great engagement for her and I look forward to seeing how her relationship develops with the National Theatre in the years to come.

To the fashion. I am in the group that thinks the dress and jacket looked lovely on her, especially from the front. The fabric was a good choice for the engagement. The earings just a bit out there was a nice touch. Not so enamoured on the clutch and strappy shoes. Didn't mind the less than perfect fit as body shape of pregnant women can change hourly and in the spirit of reusing both pieces have the potential to be reused in many different ways both publically and privately. We are quick to comment on the Duchesses but how many of us have an article of clothing worn only once or worse still not at all?

It was very good that both Hello and Elle have stared to address the issue of toxicity. All the ists Megonists Katists and whatever else ists are of the same ilk as soccer hoolighans. Sadly this decade will be remembered for an excess of outrage expressed whenever our personal requirements are not met with no respect for any other views. It will take decades to recover from the economic, social and political consequences. The media outlets do have some responsibility but the are businesses like any other business and provide supply to meet demand. No demand and it will all cease. So at the end of the day the responsibility rests with each and everyone of us. We the consumers are generating the demand. I also think Kensington Palace is in a difficult situation. We all demand accountability and transparency from them and I can just imagine the outrage if all commenting was disallowed. I also think Meghan was unfortunate in the timing of her entry into the Royal Family, in that we are probably at the height of social media toxicity. I often wondered what the social media reaction would have been if Harry had chosen an Invictus athlete of no special beauty. I suspect just as toxic.

And finally I hope both blogs can return to the forum where we feel emboldened to express our views, accept other views and can agree politely to disagree in the true spirit of Ancient Greek democracy. It saddens me that so many commentators have fallen silent.

    1. It is very sad that many have stopped commenting because they felt unwelcome to view their opinions. There is a difference between vitriol and a difference of opinion, of course.

    2. Alas I have stopped commenting on both sites for this reason. It doesn't seem to matter what my opinion is on either Duchess, vitriol ensues. I don't need that in my life. So I've become a silent lurker.

  75. For all that, you are the best Charlotte. Meghan was beautiful. I liked much her outfit. So pretty for me.

  76. Stunning! Absolutely stunning! I'm a sucker for anything in a blush pink, and the cut of this is just gorgeous. Her hair and makeup look so great too- she's just glowing, and looks so happy and in her element.

One gripe though- I wish someone took her clutch for her! It looks like it was a bit awkward for her to hold it while she was walking around and meeting all of those people. But thats certainly not her fault, and let's be honest- the clutch is gorgeous too!

Charlotte, Thank you for working with Elle on that piece- I hate how the media just loves to create feuds between people for the sake of selling stories. They are particularly heinous when it comes to drumming up fake female feuds and I think the vast majority of smart people see through it. I mean honestly- how long have the tabloids been saying that Ben and Jen were getting back together, and Jen and Angie are fighting!? Seriously over a decade! Then the online trolls just run with these ridiculous narratives and it gets progressively worse. You see it in all facets of life too- not just with famous people. Online, people feel emboldened and just spew hate. It has gotten ridiculous, and hopefully shedding some light on the subject will help to tone it down.

Both ladies are stunning and totally different. Not just with their roles, but with their fashion choices and life choices. And that is a GOOD thing! How boring would it be if we were all the same!?! I love following Kate for her more classic choices, and Meghan for her more modern take. Both are gorgeous and strong women!

  77. I love it on the model but not so much on Meghan - too tight of course. The description "relaxed silhouette" doesn't apply anymore lol!

  78. Meghan looks so lovely! I wish those who are always complaining about her clothes being ill-fitting would realize how hard it is to dress a constantly changing body AND stay true to your style. She rocks the monochromatic look and looks comfortable and happy. Charlotte, kudos to you for weighing in on ELLE! I know Kate faced criticisms as a new royal and her family did too, but that racist, hateful, sexist and horrific things said and assumed about Meghan (and even Doria) have reached a whole new level of ugly. Thanks for speaking out about this and I sincerely hope change is in the near future.

I'm on the fence with this look. Meghan is one of the only people I know who can pull off this blush rose color (it makes me look like a zombie!) and I like the flirty circle skirt and chic blazer. For some reason, I think the blazer is just a touch too long -- the proportions would look better if it were a little shorter, in my opinion. The front of the dress doesn't seem to fit quite right, either, although I can't put my finger on it. Still, she's always glowing. I envy her glow!!

I've already commented in the last posts about how surprised I've been at how much hatred Meghan has had thrown her way, not to mention the ridiculous pitting of Kate against Meghan. I'm glad you added your voice of reason to the fray, Charlotte. I do hope kindness will inch its way back into the global conversation. I also hope commenters here still feel free to disagree, rather than feeling pressure to simply blindly adore, if that makes sense.

  81. Just popped over to the article about the destructiveness of the media coverage, some fans and trolls. I enjoyed your thoughts!

  82. Thank you Charlotte for the updates and for the link, it was an interesting reading! I must say sadly that the tabloids in France are no better, they tend to portray the Duchess of Sussex almost always in a negative way and they do not choose to restrain themselves as they should, especially with the supposed "feud" and the Duchess' family... I think unfortunately racism has a big part in that, especially since the Royal Family cannot say anything upfront about all these awful rumors... It is easier to attack someone who is unable to respond :( and that says a lot about all those trolls... I just hope people will calm down and see how much good the Duchess is doing and in such little time! And let's hope the tabloids will realize demand is inexistent for these kind of articles, *sigh* we can always dream!

  83. Thank you Charlotte for the link to Elle. I’m a bit behind the Kate and Meghan news lately, so this was a refreshing read.

You made some terrific observations about media coverage and social media. The two go hand in hand. The press wields tremendous power and needs to own up to its responsibility in driving much of this tempest.

We live in a meek new world. Social media lets loose ‘brave’ anonymous bullies and we women are supposedly the target and the instigator. The press portrays it as a battle among grown women who should know better. Women who should be busy with real trials and tribulations instead of trolling each other over a RF ‘feud’. What a lovely narrative about women (not). How did we women let ourselves get used and be manipulated like this?

So I have to ask who owns the tabloids? Who owns and controls social media- twitter and instagram? Who benefits? Take a gander and do a bit of research.

I think Meghan as a symbol is pretty threatening to some people and groups. Her comments and views in themselves are not that remarkable or particularly unique in our modern society. Most people would say they support women rights, equality, access to education and respect individual differences. Few would openly admit to being racist or sexist. And yet, throw in the anonymous world of social media and there it is- all the ugly, putrefying mess. I do believe there is a bit of troll farming going on as well when you dig into these users’ profile and analyse the language being used.

While I remain hopeful about the Hello kindness campaign, I also have a healthy skepticism and will be watching.

This is a beautiful colour on her. But the shape is wrong. Too tight for her current body shape. The skirt is matronly and unflattering, and so is the jacket. I'm sure she's grateful for the jacket coverage but quite honestly she should be wearing a dress that doesn't need another garment to cover it. The shoes are wrong too, not great with the colour and just inappropriate for the venue and the weather. The entire outfit screams "middle aged Spring wedding guest". The earrings are fab, though!

  85. I love following your coverage of Duchess Meghan, Charlotte. Thank you for your very hard work, and especially for championing kindness.

Meghan looks beautiful here, and this patronage seems to be perfect for her.

  86. This is a great fit for the Duchess of Sussex. She should do well with this patronage. I like this color and ensemble she is wearing. I can see myself wearing it. Of course, I’m not pregnant😊. Thanks, Charlotte for sharing interesting detail of the NT. Charlotte, I submitted a similar comment that never got posted so this is a re-submission. Not sure what happened(?). Charlotte, nice of you to participate in Elle’s discussion.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
