Meghan's Week, Several Engagements Announced & Vote in First 'Best of 2018' Poll!

It feels like quite some time since we've had a titbit-packed post. They were a staple on Mad About Meghan in the run up to the wedding, and it's been fun to prepare one today full of upcoming engagements, news on what Meghan's been up to this week, and articles of note. Before we dive into the latest news, we have our first 'Best of 2018' poll focusing on Meghan's evening gowns during the Sussexes' Commonwealth Tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand.

Best Tour Gown

We're kicking off the polls with Meghan's tour gowns. There are just three options on the list. The lengthy tour called for an array of looks including a gown for a State dinner in Fiji. It was the first time we had seen Meghan don a gown since the royal wedding, and she certainly didn't disappoint in a Fijian blue Safiyaa Ginkgo Cape Dress. The £1,095 gown is described as: "Full-length fitted short sleeve cape dress with a long tailed back with a deep split and covered buttons, all in bluette stretch heavy crepe." The choice to champion the London-based brand rather than a more established favourite such as Givenchy was praised by fashion critics. Meghan styled the gown with shimmering earrings and Diana's diamond bracelet.

For an official Tongan dinner, Meghan opted for the effortlessly elegant Theia Ivory Crepe Column Gown. The piece features flanged shoulders, a jewel neckline and side slit. The shoulders are accentuated with hand embroidered appliqués of crystals and micro glass beads. Creative Director Don O'Neill was ecstatic when he discovered Meghan was wearing one of his creations. He apprenticed with Gina Fratini, who produced designs for royal couturier Norman Hartnell and she created pieces for Diana, Princess of Wales. Meghan selected Birks earrings, Diana's aquamarine ring and black accessories to complete the look.

Although I loved the first two gowns, the fashion highlight of the tour for me came when Meghan arrived at the Australian Geographic Awards in a magical Oscar de la Renta white tulle gown with black bonded, looped ribbon, tweed laser cut birds. According to reporters there was an audible gasp when the couple arrived. The sensational gown not only gets my vote in this poll, but 'Best Look of 2018'. It was the ultimate fairy-tale fashion moment for the new Duchess. Aquazzurra pumps and Birks rings provided a polished finish.

Meghan's Private Engagements This Week... Moving on to a plethora of news items next. What has the Duchess been up to this week? On Monday, Meghan welcomed Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern to Kensington Palace. The pair got along wonderfully during the tour. The PM gifted Meghan a pair of earrings which were described as being "for a sister with a brave and bold brave streak". The Duchess wore them on a number of occasions during the visit. At a reception at the close of the tour, Jacinda said the schedule had increased her "admiration" for Meghan. She said: "It can be a tiring thing and she's brought such warmth and grace on this visit...it hasn't slowed her down or the amount they've been out and about so that's much appreciated." It us understood Meghan invited the PM during the tour. A Palace source told Omid Scobie: "The Duchess was pleased to have the chance to thank the PM for the wonderful hospitality she and Harry received from the people of New Zealand last year."

It's excellent to see connections and relationships building. We're seeing Meghan's role develop in a stateswoman capacity too. I imagine Jacinda is the first of many leaders we'll see her meeting with.

On Wednesday, Harry and Meghan attended the Endeavour Fund judging panel at Kensington Palace. The judging takes place a couple of weeks before the actual awards. Meghan attended both last year (more on that a little bit later in the post).

A Busy Week Ahead... If hoping for several Meghan sightings, next week is one to watch out for. The Palace released a flurry of announcements over the course of the day. As expected, Meghan will visit her remaining patronages next week. On Wednesday, 30 January, the Duchess will visit the National Theatre. Meghan will join a workshop with members of the Pericles company, which was the National Theatre’s first Public Acts production in 2018. Public Acts, which launched last year, creates extraordinary acts of theatre and community. Next, she will meet apprentices who are working as technicians in various departments including carpentry, metalwork and painting. Before leaving, she will watch a performance of War Horse by primary school children.

On Thursday, 31 January, the Duchess will visit her patronage the Association of Commonwealth Universities to hear more about how the ACU is working to promote inclusion and access to education for underrepresented groups, and will speak to students about their research in the fields of sustainability, global health and peace and reconciliation.

The following day, Friday, 1 February, is an 'away day' for Harry and Meghan in Bristol. They will first visit Bristol Old Vic. Built in 1766 as a place where the people of Bristol could come together, Bristol Old Vic is the oldest continuously working theatre in the English-speaking world. From there, it's a walkabout followed by an embargoed engagement. Finally, they will visit Empire Fighting Chance, which aims to fight the impact of deprivation on young people’s lives through boxing.

We discussed Harry and Meghan's attendance at the Endeavour Fund judging panel. As expected, the couple will attend the annual awards at Draper’s Hall on Thursday, 7th February. They will celebrate the achievements of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women who have taken part in remarkable sporting and adventure challenges over the last year. Below, Meghan in an Alexander McQueen suit for the event last year.

DeMellier Duchesses... For many of us, Meghan's taste in bags is one of the highlights of her ensembles. Last year, for a pre-wedding visit to Cardiff, she carried a forest green Mini Venice DeMellier London bag. For every bag purchased, the brand funds lifesaving vaccines and treatments aimed to save the life of a child in need, in collaboration with orphan charity SOS Children's Villages. For a visit to Jewish Care's Brenner Centre, the Duchess of Cornwall carried the very same style in the same shade. I expect it's highly possible the bag was a gift. Perhaps Camilla saw Meghan carrying it and remarked she liked it? Or perhaps it's a Christmas present?

Outland Denim Update... People's Monique Jessen shared a nice update on Outland Denim, an Australian brand Meghan wore during the tour.

'By choosing sustainable and ethical labels, the Duchess of Sussex, 37, has had a life-changing impact on a number of brands. Among them: Outland Denim, which Meghan wore the on tour Down Under last fall. After stepping out in their black skinny jeans ($195), sales increased by a whopping 640%. The massive increase enabled founder James Bartle to hire 46 seamstresses in his Cambodian factory – many of whom are either victims of sex trafficking or forced labor.
“The core of our business is about giving opportunity to vulnerable women, and for Meghan to align so closely with that and to expose us to the world, it’s been huge,” Bartle tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.
After initially announcing on Instagram that he would be hiring 15-30 new seamstresses as a result of increased sales, that figure has continued to grow. Now, three months since the royal tour (where Meghan wore their Harriet high-rise skinny jeans no less than six times!), 46 families have a brighter future.
“To come from the situation they were in previously to a situation where they are making jeans fit for a princess – that’s a big deal,” says the founder, whose wife, Erica Bartle, also works for the company.'

The Avocado Toast Whisperer... Meghan's friend and make up artist Daniel Martin visited the Duke and Duchess last weekend. Afterwards, he shared a snap of tea, avocado toast and Fortnum & Mason truffles they had. He wrote: "Back to our Tig days. Thank you Meghan for being the consummate hostess this weekend and still being the Avocado toast whisperer." Meghan used plates and cups from Soho Home.

Hope you all have a great weekend! :)

  1. I voted for the Oscar de la Renta dress. I didn’t like it for the event, but it was my favorite evening look of the tour and I hope we get to see it repeated.
She certainly is going to have a very busy week coming up.

    2. Absolutely agree. A breathtakingly stunning party frock, which looked odd in a crowd of day dresses and tweed suits.

  2. I am so happy for the people running outland denim, I am so glad they were able to hire more seamstresses. This is one of the reasons I love following Meghan's fashion choices - she puts thought into the brands that she chooses to wear and support. I hope to see more ethical brands on her in the future! I hope veja and pippa small are also gaining some support from her wearing their brands as well!

    1. I just went and checked out Outland Denim with an eye on purchasing a pair in a couple of months, I've been working out and watching what I'm eating so these jeans will be my reward for a job well done :) They have some great styles and I'm thrilled that they offer mid-rise jeans even though high-rise is all the rage now.

USA granny , for breakfast ? Do you just mash the avocado and spread on a toast , or ... ? Would be happy to try that !
I do like Meghan’s fashion choice quite often enhance ethic trade , although for jewels made by one of Prince Charles’s charities . This is one of the positive actions wealthy people can have , draw the public attention on not well known brands ... knowing’ that buying a pair of jeans or any other piece will have a direct good influence on many families is really interesting ! Happy she has some engagements next week, I was getting sad not to hear from her !

    3. USA Granny, isn't it delicious?! When you have a bit of time to experiment, try this recipe for avo toast mixed with feta and red chili flakes. Meghan featured it on The Tig a few years ago! It's adapted from a recipe at Little Collins in NYC.

    4. Thank you Lauren. I will definitely give it a try. I wonder if the picture shown is Meghans original recipe? Nicole, yes all you do is lightly mash the ripe avocado leaving a good portion chunky adding a very very slight amount of olive oil (a drop) while doing so. It is a must to use a really good multi grain bread toasted then a squeeze of lemon on top. The two texture of the avocado coupled with the crunch of the toast is fabulous. It is so satisfying knowing it is high in nutrients, low carb , high in potassium and fiber and heart healthy. I hope you will give it a try. Lauren's suggestion using the above recipe sounds mouth watering.

    5. PS Just read the recipe. Looks delicious and a little more time consuming. Most likely perfect for a luncheon/light dinner. It is a little more time consuming then a quick breakfast that leaves you satisfied through the day. Thank you.

    7. My daughter was very allergic to eggs and dairy when she was little so I would supplement her meals with avocado as a treat. It’s still one of her favorite food today. She introduced avocado toast to me last year. It was a weird concept to me at first, but now I love it.

Try adding a dash of balsamic vinegar, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes (for a little kick) and salt and pepper on the mashed avocado. Yum! Going to try the fried egg + salsa next time. - Martine

Thank you USA Granny for’the Recipe, and all those who said what to add to give the dish a bit of a kick, I shall certainly try it , 8,love avocado although it is not easy to find good ones ... a shop nearby sometimes propose what they call « equatorial avocado » they are quite big with a golden flesh , very tasty with a smooth texture .... I get some to morrow and do a try ! That’s why I love Charlotte’s blogs, so many subjects we can talk about , serious or less serious ... but after all avocado toasts are still about Meghan !

    10. Lemon juice is a good addition, but a squeeze of lime is even better Also if you like garlic, take an extra bit of time to rub the toast with a pealed clove of garlic, before pilling on the mashed avocado.

    11. The only advantage of living in Texas is that avocados are everywhere. I make guacamole with avocado, lime juice, chopped sweet onion, chopped tomato, salt, chopped cilantro, and a touch of powdered white pepper.

  5. The Duchess of Cornwall looks as chic as the DoS carrying her Mini Venice DeMillier London bag. I think there is a strong possibility that Charlotte is correct is guessing it may have been a gift from Meghan. If that is the case, Meghan is certainly a wonderful gift giver. The DoC is very kind to draw attention to the brands funding of treatments for children in need through the purchase of these very smart bags.

  6. Meghan is wonderful in her mindfulness when it comes to ethical fashion, and not only pretty frocks. I have major handbag envy when she appears. The Safiyaa gown is truly gorgeous, but of course the Oscar de la Renta got my vote. It’s a stunner, and I picture Grace Kelly in it; or maybe Audrey Hepburn in “Sabrina”. Meghan owns this vintage style.
Like her sister-in-law, Meghan is choosing patronages close to her heart. It’s grand to see her dedication to her new job.

  7. Thanks for such a lovely post Charlotte, it's much appreciated after a tough week!!

I'm just thrilled that Meghan had a visit with Jacinda Arden, two women in leading roles both mothers (to-be in Meg's case) and both in the world's spot light, I can only imagine that they have so much to talk about. I noticed during the tour they got along like a house on fire and I'm happy to see their friendship grow. I hope that as Meghan's royal role grows she will be able to strike up friendships with royal women and female leaders from other countries as well. As I've said before, Meghan strikes me as a "girl's girl", that friend who is supportive and nurturing as well as whip smart and witty, never catty or competitive.

Next week sounds like a royal watchers dream! I'm really looking forward to seeing her at the ACU, that patronage is a perfect fit for Meghan and look forward to hearing what advice she might have for the students she meets.

Since Charlotte's last post I feel the need to pay more attention to the work done by the Duchess and maybe focus a bit less on her clothing, although that might not extend to her gorgeous jewelry and purses (so many of which I covet). :) But how cool would it be if she loaned Camilla her purse?? So many women in other royal houses swap clothing and accessories, it would be great if the women of the BRF followed suit.

    1. Hi bluhare! I hope your weekend is off to a great start! I found it sooo difficult to pick a favorite evening gown even though I only had 3 to choose from :) And while I love all three I picked the Fijian blue gown because to me it seemed the most "Meghan" plus I thought the clean lines and that beautiful blue color worked so well on her. I do love the tulle gown, it was fun to see Meghan play princess dress up and I hope to see it on her again in the future.

    2. Hey, lauri! I love the blue color of th hat gown. Its gorgeous. That is my second favorite and the reason I didnt vote for it is it looks severe on her if that makes sense. I think that tulle gown is much more playful yet chic. A tough combo to master I think which is why it got my vote.

  10. Thanks for such a great “mash-up” post! I had voted for the blue cape dress because, although she was clearly stunning in the Oscar de la Renta dress, I found the blue dress much more of a risk; a risk carried out effortlessly!

And my curiosity is completely overboard on wondering what is the recipe for the avocado spread!!??!!

  13. According to Royal Central, I believe it was, the Sussexes invited the PM to tea at KP Monday to thank her for her kind reception of the couple in New Zealand. The PM was on her way to the Economic Conference in Davos, Switzerland, where she met with Prince William and other royals ( Queen Maxima, for one) on issues such as mental health concerns among employees. Interestingly, CP Mary of Denmark is heading an effort to bring sustainable methods to the fashion industry. I had not realized the huge impact that industry has on the world economy. I just thought of fashion as a fun diversion. Ha!

I am reading a book about Australia, and I think my newly acquired knowledge will make your articles and the Sussex's tour even more meaningful than they were for me in October. I would enjoy going back through Kate's and William's tour as well--if the articles are available on the Duchess of Cambridge blog. Thanks for your help--and your great articles!

To revisit William and Kate's tour, the 'Blog Archive' tool on DKB would be the best option.

  21. I voted for the white gown. Of course it did not quite fit Meghan, but I admire the structured design, and she pulled it off. The blue is also beautiful. The ODLR is a bit too been there and done that, the design a prom dress from the fifties, and the fabric too busy for my taste. I see I am vastly outnumbered! C’est la vie. :-)

  23. Thanks for the info, Charlotte. I'm excited about revisiting the tours. I just read In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson. 24. I notice that Daniel turned off commenting for his post about Meghan. I wonder if this is due to the stories circulating about Meghan leaving Instagram because she was reading such horrible comments about herself. I hate that people are so abusive to her :(

    1. It's not just Daniel, even Chris Jackson (who is a royal photographer) turns the comments of on some of his posts about Meghan because people are very nasty - especially on instagram. I cannot even tell you how many times I have read some things that make me sick to my stomach. This is the same issue with the official KP instagram page, I don't know if it's better now but I just stopped reading stuff there in general.

      Delete
    2. When I read this interesting post I thought it was unwise of Daniel to post. There is a good reason why the Royals keep their private lives private. It just opens Meghan up to more totally unnecessary scrutiny and comment. For example - She promotes ethically sustainability and then serves one of the trendy foods that there are questions about environmental and social impact of the use. Pippa has just been critised for that very issue. Never mind the fact Harry is not mentioned in the post. So I hope in the future there will be no social media posts by friends. I personally have no issue at all about the post but immediately saw how people might. So very unwise.

    3. I agree Libby. It must be a steep learning curve for Meghan and her friends from her old life. Being royal is just different from a regular celebrity.
Is there anything wrong with a picture of toast and tea cups? Not at all. Especially not to us who end with a discussion on avo toast. But for people who are looking for something to criticize about even toast can create an opportunity. So for Meghan’s sake the less openings like this the better.

      Delete
    4. At least it was not credited to sources or "friend- acquaintance " It was likely picked up as a fluff or filler item. Although an interesting window into Meghan's private life, the post does seem a bit TMI for a BRF member. It is similar to the type of remark usually heard quoted as coming from a royal during a walkabout. I don't think we are used to having such personal info (with photos) from a private guest in a royal's home. I think anon 12:12 may be correct about the steep learning curve.

      Delete
    5. You are unfortunately right about the happy posting by Meghan's friend, but I was happy to know that she was still enjoying her life with her friends. People will print anything--I saw a "story" that one of Meghan's knees looked like the face of Princess Charlotte. At least it wasn't a complaint!

    6. Actually when I looked at the photograph in depth it looks strange like a staged photo. Would one serve toast, avocado and chocolate together? Perhaps Daniel just set up a photograph to say thank you to Meghan not realising the consequences. He does have a lot of Meghan photos on his instagram promoting his profession. What do you think Charlotte?

  25. While I loved all the gowns, for me it had to be the last lovely tulle white and black gown. It was a fairy tale princess come to life gown. I'm sickened by the unfounded allegations by supposedly "royal insiders" against the DOS in the British press. It's time the woman caught a break, she's pregnant for the first time with a very well wanted baby, let her have a little peace. She's working hard for her new country and while I don't know if it's racially motivated or anti-Americanism it's truly despicable. I admire the woman and I did so before she met Harry, she cared about people then and she still does. I admit my admiration is biased as my kids are bi-racial and to me she is a wonderful example of what you can achieve if you focus only on a person's accomplishments and not their skin tone. I can't wait to see her out and about and with Harry on another day out meeting people and showing the world what good people they are. Sorry about the rant but I really hate to see people being bullied.

  26. Off subject, but why do the Sussexes spend hardly any time at church?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Perhaps they go to church and it is not reported, or photographed. Or perhaps like many others, going to church is not their thing. One's religion is a very personal matter and it is not up to any of us to qestion Harry's or Meghan's faith.

      Delete
    2. I agree Laura, one's religion really isn't a topic for a fashion blog. It might not be the aim of Anon but this will quickly become one more thing people will use for their anti-Meghan bias.

I believe this could be the same anon who raised the question about religion in the Duchess Kate blog.

    4. I hope Charlotte declares religion an off-limits topic, like politics. It gets so messy so quickly, and really, I think a line is crossed when it's put into a public forum.

      Delete
    5. I agree religion is not a topic for a fashion blog. But this blog is more than that, a lot more than fashion is discussed: engagements, charities, mental health, work ethic, a religious wedding preceded by baptism and confirmation, attending Louis christening... all of this is not far from religion. I don't think a person's religious beliefs have to be strictly private and remain hidden, that way of thinking reminds me of totalitarian regimes. One's beliefs are part of oneself, and when discussing a person, they are bound to be discussed. If religion can not be discussed because it is personal, so can't feminism.

    6. I think it's an interesting topic tbh. The haters will hate no matter what. I have stopped to comment here because every topic it's a taboo and who thinks something different is not so welcome imo. It's all very subtle but I feel this way.

    10. Anon 21:32 - this is my opinion only, but anonymous online posters should identify themselves and own the comments they make. The same question as yours was also posted virtually word for word on DKB yesterday, and it seems apparent (to me anyway) that you wish to encourage a debate on this topic. It’s not that I have any issue at all with debate, but the increase in anonymous posting lately is concerning, and I’d like to see Anons put a legitimate name and/or location to their posts. Just my two cents.......

    11. My opinion is that we don't see M&H or K&W going to church often. Obviously they feel the need to do so. Living in Texas, where going to church takes the place of being a giving individual, I applaud people who can lead good charitable lives without bringing religion into it.

  27. I love all three of these gowns, but I voted for the Oscar de la Renta because I love "Rear Window" by Hitchcock so much, and this reminds me of it while creating a great look on its own for Meghan.

What a lovely thing about the bags. I hope that they each have one and one isn't lending a bag to the other--each could easily afford to purchase the separate bag to gift to the other, and that way they expand the good they are doing for the charity.

Avocado toast. I am a great fan of this breakfast too, USA Granny! If I'm working at home and not meeting anyone, I add a tiny amount of minced garlic. Otherwise, a dash of lemon or lime juice.

  30. I love all three gowns. The blue and white gowns for its minimalism, simplicity and structure. The Oscar de la Renta for its perfect princess fashion moment for Meghan. So I voted for the blue gown because of the jewelry (earrings and Diana’s bracelet) she wore with it.
Can’t wait for this week’s events and posts.
Thanks again, Charlotte, for this happy, informative and entertaining post.

  31. I voted yesterday - for the Fijian blue Safiyaa Ginkgo Cape Dress.

It reminds me of the tour, the place, and time; MM/ DOS looks gracefully proper and complete in it.
