Harry and Meghan to Marry in May at Windsor, First Joint Engagement on Friday & Much More!

We have a plethora of updates to share with you this evening. Kesington Palace has revealed an array of new information regarding Harry and Meghan, the Royal wedding, their first joint engagements and more. The Palace said Harry and Meghan "are extremely grateful for the warm public response following yesterday's announcement. It means a great deal that so many around the UK, Commonwealth and around the world are celebrating with them".

A May Wedding at Windsor... It was hotly tipped as the potential venue for some time, so it came as no surprise Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen the magnificent St George's Chapel at Windsor as the location for their wedding in May.

The exact date is yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to be at least a month after the Duchess of Cambridge gives birth to her third child. The Palace said they want their wedding to be "fun and joyful" and involve the public. Emily Andrews reports "the wedding will be televised, hopefully it will involve some procession to involve the public".

The Palace added: "Her Majesty The Queen has granted permission for the wedding to take place at the Chapel. The  Royal Family will pay for the wedding."

Kensington Palace
The Palace noted:

'As with all members of the Royal Family, Windsor is a very special place for Prince Harry and he and Ms Markle have regularly spent time there over the last year and a half. They are grateful to the Queen for granting permission for the use of the Chapel. The Chapel itself has centuries of Royal tradition and hosted the weddings of many members of the Royal family. Prince Harry and Ms Markle are delighted that the beautiful grounds of Windsor Castle will be where they begin their lives as a married couple.
Prince Harry and Ms Markle are leading the process for all aspects of the wedding. We look forward to sharing these details with you in the months ahead as decisions are made. As was the case with the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Royal Family will pay for the core aspects of the wedding, such as the church service, the associated music, flowers, decorations and the reception afterwards.'

Meghan and Harry will carry out their first joint engagements on Friday... This portion of the press release surprised me enormously. I always suspected Meghan would want to get 'stuck in' to the work aspect of the role with immediacy, however this is much sooner than I anticipated. On Friday, the couple will visit Nottingham. Harry has spent a lot of time in the city both privately and publicly since 2013 when he met young people there exploring issues around youth violence. Through The Royal Foundation, he established the Full Effect programme. The Palace said Harry is "proud of the friendships and partnerships he has built there and looking forward to showing Ms Markle a community that has become very special to him. Ms Markle cannot wait to meet many of the young people Prince Harry has told her about.

Let's take a look at the (rather full) itinerary for Friday shall we? The day will begin with a civic welcome at the National Justice Museum followed by a walkabout where they will meet members of the public as a couple for the first time. From there, the newly engaged couple will visit the Nottingham Contemporary, where they will join a celebration for World AIDS Day hosted by the Terrence Higgins Trust. Then, they will visit Nottingham Academy where Full Effect mentors have been working with young people to provide positive role models. It promises to be a fantastic day, in a terrific city close to Harry's heart. During the engagement interview, Meghan spoke of her to desire to immerse herself in the UK and learn more about smaller organisations. It's wonderful to see her getting straight into it. I understand it's the first of many engagements ahead in the coming months. To keep up with the schedule, I've added a page for Meghan's Calendar. I'm very excited for this!

Meghan is to go through the process of becoming a British Citizen... it will involve a period of studying before taking the test. Richard Palmer tweeted "It is not clear yet if Meghan will ultimately give up her US citizenship. The process of acquiring UK citizenship can take several years".

Meghan will be Baptised before the wedding... Last night Rebecca English revealed Meghan is Protestant. Her father belongs to the Episcopalian Church in the US and her mother Doria is protestant. She just happened to be educated at a Catholic school. Meghan will be baptised and confirmed before the wedding.

Meghan will give up current charity patronages... Meghan will give up her current charity affiliations but is expected to continue working in the areas she's always been passionate about in the UK. After the wedding, she will join the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry as a patron. Again, very much looking forward to seeing Meghan's interests added to the Foundation's agenda.

Bogart isn't coming to the UK... As an avid animal lover, this story has caught my eye. Meghan adores her rescue dogs Guy and Bogart. Guy is in the UK with her but Bogart has been settled with close friends and will not be travelling over. The exact reason is unknown but it has been suggested it is possibly due to age or infirmity. It's very sad for the two little guys to be separated, I'm sure she would have brought Bogart if it was possible. Meghan will be doing a good deal of travelling visiting family and friends in the months ahead, no doubt she'll be spending time with Bogart too.

Harry and Meghan visited Buckingham Palace today... Rebecca English noted the couple were spotted arriving at Buckingham Palace earlier this afternoon. It's unknown what the purpose was. It has been suggested they may have been discussing details about the wedding or engagement portraits. Regarding the engagement portraits, apparently no details have been finalised yet. I think it likely we'll see them before Christmas.

Christmas at Sandringham?... Emily Andrews has the scoop!

Messages of delight from Kate and Camilla... During a visit to the Foundling Museum this morning, Kate gave a rare sound bite to the media to say: "William and I are absolutely thrilled. It’s such exciting news. It’s a really happy time for any couple and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this happy moment.”

In a warm message, the Duchess of Cornwall said: "America's loss is our gain. Absolutely thrilled - we are delighted". This morning, she described Meghan as a "star".

Meghan's Engagement Coat... For those of you who loved Meghan's LINE Mara coat, it is available at Hudson Bay discounted from $800 to $560 in sizes X-Small and Medium (with thanks to Meghan's Fashion).

THAT video from yesterday... For those who didn't see this, it's a gem :)

Comments Section Note: I posted this on Duchess Kate earlier today and feel it's important to share. Whilst the very vast majority of comments on both blogs were fair, reasonable and enjoyable to read, I have observed an ongoing issue which (as my grandmother would say) needs to be swiftly nipped in the bud. I am referring to mainly unpublished comments. Kate is Kate. Meghan is Meghan. Both are entirely different women, with different strengths and weaknesses, in entirely different roles. In a society that pits women against each other, as a community we must strive to avoid the Kate v Meghan narrative. On 'both sides' of the fence, particularly cruel remarks have been left. The primary reason I started the separate blog was to avoid the negativity created by endless comparisons. This blog is not a venue for tearing Kate apart nor is the other blog a place to relentlessly bash Meghan. I think people forget William, Kate, Harry and Meghan are all on the same team - the future of the monarchy - this sort of imagined rivalry is the very last thing they want. Separately, there's been unwarranted vicious comments about Meghan in general, such comments are not welcome here. Constructive criticism along the way is of course absolutely fine but vicious attacks will not be posted. I hope to foster a warm and welcoming community here with interesting debates, I'll need your help for that. There's already a group of fanastic posters here, I have no doubt we can achieve a nice space for those following Meghan's journey. Thank you!

Did I say I was excited about Friday? :)

    1. There is so much news now! Very exciting. I also read that the Pride and Prejudice property suddenly went off the market yesterday (hope M&H bought it). Also that Bogart was left with very close friends, and I'm wondering if Meghan's friend Jessica and her three children cared for Bogart a lot in the past year or so and if Bogart is with them now. I think Charlotte will have her hands full with the busy days of Kate and Meghan. So exciting!! And I love having a site to go to that is not gossipy but is kind and accurate. Thanks!!

Speacking of kind, I hope Meghan invites her dysfunctional half-siblings to the wedding---I feel a little sorry for them. They could assign people to watch them.

YES! Me too!! They're not wasting any time getting out there.

    3. "They could assign people to watch them", lol.

Allison. Then her half-sister might scurry home and take monies from the highest bidder and throw together another tell-all, either positive or negative, but still a tell-all none the less and circuit all the talk shows, etc.
So,WHAT is Meghan going to do about her half-sister who has been estranged from their family for years and who was reportedly saying very bad things about Meghan (to know surprise of her own family) and who now denies ever saying anything bad, although Facebook and Twitter reportedly contradict her denying previously saying very bad things about Meghan.
It is a sticky wicket to say the least. Kind of a Fergie situation in a way. And a looming problem for Harry and Meghan. Once invited to the wedding, then what? Could they ever really trust her? I really don't feel sorry for Meghan's family really except for her father whose business partner apparently swindled him out of his life savings. If the Middletons can year by year continue to show themselves as upright and trustworthy and discreet, then Meghan's extended family should do likewise. I can see Carole and Michael spending the weekend at Balmoral again. Meghan's mom and dad, eventually, yes. Meghan's half-sister? No way. No way, short a huge miracle transformation.

    4. I have read that Meghan's father left his two older kids to go to California to work. And we have read about his great devotion to Meghan, including the story of the lottery winnings (not sure what to make of that story, though). I feel like the older kids did not receive the attention from their father they needed and are frankly very jealous and bitter. If there is any way they could attend the wedding (and be watched to keep them from overdrinking, overtalking, etc), I think it would go a long way toward healing them.

    5. We are all excited also, Charlotte. :)
I am still in the 'pinch me someone. Is this real?' mode. lol

    6. I was surprised to hear that Meghan's father and Harry have not met. As for the rest of the bunch, she should let them stay on this side of the Atlantic. Better than a moat!

  2. No major surprises here - I wouldn't have chosen May myself but it makes sense on this timetable. The chapel is no surprise at all. I note the comment on the payment - what has been the most spoken of issue after the failure of a bank holiday to materialise. I think the royal family is very wise to put that out - even if it is unusual.

I notice the continued use of Meghan's stage name - I wonder if she is to change it by deed poll or has legally changed it already elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I had wondered if "Meghan" was a "stage" name myself, knowing that she'd been referred to by her first name Rachel growing up, at least by the schools she attended. But perhaps she'd always been called Meghan by her family. Does anyone know? Harry apparently calls her Meghan. (How odd it would be to suddenly change your name halfway through your life).

      Delete
    2. I used to think she'd go by Rachel once she gets engaged to Harry, as that is her actual first name but it doesn't seem to be the case. Pity, it would have been a good way of distinguishing her acting career from her role as a royal.

      Delete
    3. What stage name? She simply goes by her middle name as do thousands of people every day, without changing anything legally. Many royals went by their middle names, Queen Victoria among them.

This thinly veiled need to find something wrong with Meghan is getting really tiring. ‘’Stage name’’ indeed.

      Delete
    4. Agree Gemma. Even Harry doesn't go by his actual first name.
      It's beyond tiring.

      Delete
    5. Gemma, not sure if you're answering to my post or the one I was responding to before mine, but for the record, I am a huge Meghan supporter and have absolutely nothing negative to say about her whatsoever. I didn't realize the term "stage name" was a negative thing, and I don't believe the post that first mentioned it was intended to be negative as well. It's simply refers to a name an actor uses or changes their name to, for career purposes. I am aware that the name Meghan is Ms. Markle's middle name and that many people do go by their middle name vs. their first name - I've known some. That is why I was wondering if she's always gone by Meghan or only began using it when she started her modeling/acting career.

      Delete
    6. Meghan has been called Meghan (her middle name) long before she entered the entertainment industry.

      Delete
    7. She didn't always go by Meghan. She was Rachel until she got into acting (after college I suppose) and chose 'Meghan Markle' as her stage name because it sounded catchier than 'Rachel Markle.'

      Delete
    8. I remember reading a couple of articles quite a while ago that Meghan started going by Meghan in high school or college. I will find the articles.
      (This may take awhile.) lol

    9. Julia, I too am not surprised about Windsor. It will be grand yet intimate, if that makes sense.

And bravo to the Firm for being proactive in addressing the financial aspect of it. In other words, don't even go there.

I don’t know anything about St George’s chapel. Does that mean a small affair or big royal wedding? I hope there’s a carriage ride but not sure if that’ll happen if they’re not declaring a bank holiday.

Im glad to see that she’ll jump right into engagements. I wonder if someone behind the scenes wanted to avoid the criticisms Kate faced (not comparing the two women, but saying they are learning from past mistakes). Or maybe Meghan just wants to jump in so the country can get to know her, and she can get to know the people.

I wonder why she’s giving up her current charities? Does anyone have insight as to why that might need to happen?

Personally I think she’s a great fit for the role, but I think she’ll need to prove herself to the naysayers and starting engagements right away like this will help prove the negative nellies wrong!

    1. My guess is that since Meghan hasn’t lived in the UK and they have been very private with their relationship that the engagement months will be used to introduce her to as many places and people around the UK. So that by May she and Harry at events will seem like a foregone conclusion and she will be a seamless part of the royal family.
I also believe that they will try and start a family as soon as they marry, and if everything goes ok she’ll have to take some time of, so using these months for traveling and meeting is a good idea.

      Delete
    2. The chapel is much smaller than the Abbey which is why the royals like it, it's a much more intimate setting. Assuming the weather holds, there will still be opportunity for a carriage ride through the castle grounds as I think happened for Edward and Sophie. This venue makes it much more a family event and less a public spectacle. William as heir to the throne naturally needed the bigger event, while Harry being lower in the line of succession can opt for this quieter venue, which I'm personally all in favour of'

      Delete
    3. Meghan/her charities? political reasons. Meghan now has to be politically neutral.

      Delete
    4. Hi Jessica, I think it's safe to say a wedding at St George's Chapel will be somewhere in between a small affair and a big royal wedding! It will definitely be smaller than William and Kate's wedding, and there won't be a balcony appearance because they're not in London. I'm expecting something along the lines followed by Prince Edward and Sophie when they got married. They had a televised wedding, with a short carriage ride using the Royal Ascot carriages (not as big and grand as the ones used for London royal weddings) and a short time after the ceremony posing as a big family group on the steps of the chapel (that was supposed to be instead of a balcony appearance). It definitely wasn't as spectacular or as memorable as the bigger London royal weddings for me, but maybe Harry and Meghan will tweak the template a bit!

      Delete
    5. lol. Helen. "tweak the template" they will. :)
It's going to be excellent. :)

      Delete
    6. I believe we can look forward to a carriage ride. Edward and Sophie's ride was beyond Castle walls and included the main street in Windsor.

  6. Oh no! May, why did they have to say May? I'm away on a long-awaited and much-needed holiday for the first half of the month and I'll be absolutely gutted if I miss the wedding coverage. Watching it as a recording after it's all happened just wouldn't be the same at all. :((

Crossing everything imaginable and praying to the fairy godmother of royal weddings that it's late May - PLEEEEEEASE let it be late May.

    1. It will DEFINITELY be late May! Spring comes later in the UK, and that will give Kate more time post-baby and the flowers some extra days to come out. I would put money on it ;)

      Delete
    2. If it is any comfort to you, people suggest it is the end of May (25th).

      Delete
    3. Kate is due in April and she's been late with both George and Charlotte, so I think it's unlikely that the wedding would be the beginning of May :)

      Delete
    4. I would think also that it will be later in May to give Kate time to give birth and concentrate on her new baby for the first few weeks, without having to deal with George and Charlotte's (probable) roles in the wedding.

      Delete
    5. Thanks SSM and Anett :) I really hope you're both right. Of course, I should have thought about Kate's recovery time. I guess if this baby is due not much earlier than Charlotte was, then late May is much more likely - hurray! Hopefully I can sandwich the holiday in between the Cambridge baby news and the wedding - perfect!

    6. They might choose the 28th, as that will be a Bank Holiday in the UK, so will give many the chance to watch the wedding.

    7. 📆 WOW. What a coincidence. (probably) NOT.
Brits are clever like that you know. (Just teasing).
That would be so perfect. And more people could participate and really enjoy the day. If they want to include the public like they say they do, THAT is a BIG first step. :)
They planned Kate's wedding on St. Catherine's Day, remember? They declared a bank holiday then but on May 28th they wouldn't have to.

  7. I like the bit about "involve the public"!! As well as "fun and joyful"! YAY! A May wedding! May is considered the "lucky wedding month" in Germany! I hope it will be wonderful weather then.... I love May for several reasons - but it´s still a long way to go....
So excited about her accompanying Harry to apparently "plenty" engagements around the UK!! So there you go! As I´ve said: she´s intelligent and she knows what she´s doing! Completely normal that she would do that - as she said yesterday: it was a CHOICE - and she´s made it, so she´s "doing it"! I never had any doubts whatsoever - that´s simply the vibe I got from her from the beginning! Intelligent, down-to-earth, hands-on, embracing the challenges presented to her. Go for it, Meghan!!!
Yep, USA, your loss is the UK´s gain!

  8. Lovely news Charlotte! Finally have a chance to chime in :)

Wedding sounds lovely, but most of all I am thrilled that they're heading out on an engagement, really looking forward to that, as many of us thought it doesn't seem they'll waste any time in that regard. I think they see their royal roles as a vocation in a way, a real calling and opportunity. They have an incredible platform and seem intent on using it. I suspect Meghan will work very hard for the British people and on behalf of British, and global, causes. That is very good news for the entire royal family, "a rising tide lifts all boats" as the man said :)

Other interesting stat I saw - the demographic most interested and engaged with the news yesterday? 18-25 year olds. As long as a fair number of them were British ;) that's also very good news for the royals, you need to draw younger generations in for the monarchy to not just survive, but thrive!

And well done as always Charlotte! X

    1. I'm an 18 year old living in Ghana (a Commonwealth nation in West Africa) and I'm most definitely excited by the news! I've been reading the DKB blog since 2011 and this one since Charlotte started it but this is my first time commenting. Been waiting for this news ever since I heard that they were dating...nothing interests me more than royal weddings (the dress! the hair! the tiara! the ring!), and the fact that Meghan was an ambassador for UN Women and World Vision Canada impressed me a lot. I aspire to be a woman like (or even better than her)...intelligent, hardworking, altruistic, outspoken about the causes dear to her heart...a woman who isn't ashamed to say she is a feminist and fights for a better life for women around the world. So glad that she has the royal platform behind her now!

I am enamored by these two....warm, kind people who want to make a difference. I know there were many opinions on Meghan in their engagement interview...I went back & watched it with a criticizing eye & I still think Meghan was nothing but warm, gracious, yet respectful. Sure she spoke quite a bit but it was more to finish Prince Harry's sentences/thoughts rather than talking OVER him. Perhaps that's just the American upbringing ;-) And yes there's a protocol when it comes to speaking of HM the Queen but Meghan will adapt just fine. Wishing them a lifetime of happiness.

May seems so close yet so far away ahhhh!! ;-)

    I have many questions:
    1) Involve the public?
    2) I don't remember an announcement about the Royal Family paying for the wedding when Will/Kate got married. Is this customary for them to announce it like that?
    3) How do couples get their titles like the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? I know the Queen decides it, but HOW does she decide it?

    ReplyDelete
  13. No surprise for St Georges, and all the wedding being paid for by the RF, it works from a security and personal angle that they can control the event to suit their taste and not be so ostentatious for the grumbling Tax payer. Personally I would have loved a big occasion at the Abbey and I was thinking it would be disappointing not to have the Balcony moment and The Kiss - but after yesterday's 'electric' atmosphere, these two are very special and will probably create something magical and special for us all to enjoy and be apart of.

Also good to hear of the visit to Nottingham - she seems to be taking the idea of getting to know her UK base more very seriously and jumping in straight away. Go Team H&M!

    1. Mr. D, I (again!) wholeheartedly agree. Would have LOVED the Abbey, the balcony, etc, but, St. Georges is beautiful and I´m pretty sure we will see them kiss on the steps of the Chapel (is that even allowed - hello, Church of England, are you listening? ;-))) ). If not, I think the crowd will be having a word with them, lol!!

  14. Oh this is so exciting!

I have a few different thoughts and questions and even two potentially-crackpot theories I'd love to discuss here but will break them up into different posts.

It's too bad she's having to give up her current charities but I suppose it makes sense that she'll have to focus on British ones instead. Obviously we'll never know what private conversations the couple have had but I'm so curious as to how and when discussions about how their life would have to change post-marriage took place. I wonder if there was ever any discussion about creating a hybrid life for Harry that would allow Meghan to continue doing her current charity work and perhaps splitting time between the UK and the States? Are there any laws that require a non-UK citizen to become a British citizen in order to be a part of a family supported by UK taxpayers? Must anyone who wishes to be married in St George's convert to Church of England?

    1. Shannon. I think it was mentioned above that Meghan had to relinquish her work for the U.N. etc. because of political ramifications. Even the Queen has to walk the line of political neutrality. Meghan can work in unison with William, Harry and Kate now towards the already sanctioned charities under William, Harry and Kate's Royal Charitable Trust Foundation. That, has become her job as well as attending Royal events.
The other questions I defer to those who know. :)

    1. I knew Meghan is her middle name, legally, and that she goes by it now, both professionally and personally. I just didn't know and was questioning if she's always been called Meghan, from the time she was a child, or not. Pages from her school yearbooks shows photos of her with the caption "Rachel Markle." It seems to me that in school yearbooks, students are usually referred to by the name they are known by, not necessarily their legal name, so I wasn't sure.

Lots of questions solidly answered right out of the gate. Very refreshing. After the past few weeks, it is almost miraculous that the Palace and media are so factual and forthcoming. I am still recuperating from their months long silence (Palace), chaotic media huffs, bluffs, and just unsubstantiated reporting in general. lol. (And, I still wonder what caused that mix-up last Thursday.)

I still have a question about a coat of arms for Meghan, lol. All part of a Royal wedding, me thinks. :)
    Does she need one? 🛡

wow. Meghan only has five months to plan a Royal wedding but so did Kate and hers was way, way, way bigger. I am so eager to see her gown, veil, hairstyle, cake, reception/dinner menu and of course it is always nice to see Harry in uniform. He is so handsome. :)
So very, very happy that Meghan is being confirmed and baptized into the Church of England. (To me that surpasses everything else actually.❤️) Who will be performing the ceremony? Does anyone know? If it is the same man that spoke over William and Kate, (not the one with the fancy hat, whose accent was nice also), I could listen to him speak all day long. Beautiful voice and accent. His accent to me is how the English language was most likely created to sound. (no offense to anyone).

I hope the information about Guy and Bogart gets cleared up. I am sure they got feedback about the confusion of her comment, hopefully. Loving doggies the way I do, that left me unsettled. 🐾🐶 It would be lovely to know what's going on with Guy and Bogart.
(from the pound to the Palace, although I'm sure they loved Toronto just as well.)

There will still be a carriage ride involved in a marriage at Windsor, right? (Please say yes, lol) 🏰

Meghan will retain her U.S. citizenship while she is in process of gaining British citizenship infers that once she has her British citizenship she will relinquish her U.S. citizen, right? Or did I misunderstand that? 🇬🇧

(Also, if it is okay, a shout out to Lydia, Paola, Kate from Texas for starters, lol. Hope you all are following all the Harry and Meghan excitement. Thinking of you.) :)

Also Cecilia was wanting a link to Claudia's blogsite.
What is that? Does anyone know? :)

lol, that would make an awesome question for the citizenship quiz. 🏹 (did Robin Hood even use a crossbow?) lol

Oh speaking of British questionnaires, and for those of you who haven't yet seen it, there is a cute video of Meghan taking a British quiz. Certain members of "Suits" were quizzed also on different quiz segments. And I think this was even before she met Harry. I will add the name of it in a minute. :)

"Meghan Markle Fails Test on Britishness"/Suits/Dave, 3:47 minutes.
This was taped in 2012 to promote "Suits" being aired in the U.K. Each actor had to take a quiz to help promote the project.

  21. She goes by her middle name, Meghan, both personally and professionally. It is not an assumed name for publicity. My daughter also goes by her middle name, as do a lot of people I know. I made a comment earlier, not sure if it was published, regarding the use of Harry's given name, Henry , on the announcement while Meghan's middle name was used. I think that has an objective, non-critical tone. I think her legal name Rachel Meghan will be used in the ceremony.
I came to this "spin-off" of the Duchess Kate blog because it seemed people were more positive and upbeat here. I hope that continues. Legitimate questions within reason, of course; but we must at least try to be accurate when criticizing. A good point to remember for both blogs, I think.

  22. I am so excited/pleased that she is jumping right in! I expect we will see a great deal of her in the months before the wedding, carrying out engagements with Harry. From what we saw in the interview yesterday, she is a natural and will be a great asset to the Royal Family and a great partner for Harry.

  23. A May wedding!! And so fun to see Meghan jumping into engagements with Harry. I bet Charlotte is already working on Meghan's calendar link!

  24. 2nd line of questioning - how will a wedding taking place at St George's differ from William and Kate's? Will there be differences also since Harry is now 5th (or 6th? I can't remember) in line for the throne? I'm googling to see if there is much capacity difference. Is there likely to be a balcony appearance, even though Windsor is well outside central London? I forget, what part of taxpayer money was spent on William and Kate's wedding? I note the comment about the BRF paying for this wedding. Won't there be public security concerns too that would necessitate stuff like increased police presence, crowd control, barriers, traffic control and such?

I do hope for a big, public wedding with lots of pomp and circumstance and fancy people wearing fancy things and doing fancy stuff :).

    1. St George's Chapel is tiny compared with the great Abbey William and Kate used! It's a lovely place to go and worship as I did when young while my family lived in Windsor. It's an excellent way to avoid anything like the fuss that was made for William and Kate which in my view is a good thing. But I'm sure there will still be heaps and heaps of photos for us to enjoy :-)

  25. And I went back to yesterdays post to discuss my two theories there but over 400 comments! I was a little intimidated. So, here we go! This is based on my thoughts on the engagement interview and is just fun speculation on my part :).

    1. Their mention of "protecting the privacy" of the "mutual friend," a woman, that introduced them and set them up on a blind date. I had always heard that it was a male friend of both of them, perhaps the guy who owns one of those private social clubs? SoHo House or somesuch? At any rate, the thought that popped into my mind was that this mutual friend is in fact a high-end, discreet matchmaker. And of course the only one I know of publicly is Patty Stanger who I find funny and outrageous. It's hilarious to me to picture either of them sitting down with Patty for a chat about their love lives :).

So yeah anyway. Either a professional matchmaker or Tinder. I'm sure there's a rich-person version of Tinder out there :).

    2. I have a hunch they really did get engaged in Africa a while back and that the rather pedestrian (but still lovely!) story they have given publicly is just to satisfy the public so they can keep their actual engagement story private between just them.

  28. Ooh the wedding details are starting to trickle in! April and May are surely going to be an exciting few months for us royal watchers :)

If I may go off topic for a bit of a random question, I see that Richard Palmer reports that it's unclear if Meghan will relinquish her US citizenship and that becoming a UK citizen is a lengthy process. I fully understand that as I work with the SA embassy and many others myself. What I don't understand is why Meghan would have to relinquish her US citizenship whilst awaiting her UK citizenship. As per international law, no person may be without a nationality, even whilst awaiting citizenship, and while she may acquire UK citizenship upon her marriage, having dual citizenship should not be a problem under current laws.

I understand that being a part of the British monarchy comes with its own set of rules however, I don't think that she should give up her US citizenship. She may choose not to vote in future elections but that is her country of birth, she is described as an "American" actress and I actually think that Harry should be granted US citizenship upon their marriage, keeping with the equality laws of various international charters of this modern era ;)

Plus, Harry is adored in the US and it will work in their favour to endear him to the American people in such a modern way :)

    1. Avee, both the US and the UK do allow dual citizenships (not all countries do so!!). From what I´ve heard via Twitter Meghan will indeed keep her US citizenship until she will have acquired UK citizenship and it is NOT decided yet whether she will THEN give up her US citizenship.
There might be tax paying issues, for example, if Meghan has a certain annual income, she might be "taxable" in BOTH countries. There is a dual tax paying agreement in place, which - as I understand it and as I have experienced it myself with other countries - allows you to deduct the taxes you paid in the country you live in (here the UK) from the taxes you would have to pay in your "other" country (here the US) or sometimes you don´t need to pay taxes at all because you´ve already paid taxes in the country you live in (here the UK). I don´t know (obviously) whether Meghan would "qualify" for double tax payment (meaning we don´t know anything about her income situation), but this could be an issue.
Personally, I would love it if she had BOTH citizenships. It would be such a positive and "unifying" sign for both nations. As a member of the Royal Family, surely she would need British citizenship and I´m glad KP announced that she will apply and go through all the different stages that others have to, too.
This tax thing got much longer than I wanted it to be - I hope it didn´t confuse more than it clarified - but that´s taxes! As we say in German: a book with seven seals (meaning no-one will ever understand it, LOL!!)

      Delete
    2. If Meghan were to stay an American citizen, she would have to file tax returns in America, which would lead to all sorts of problems, to name only one reason.
Also, whether she remains a US citizen or not, she absolutely cannot vote. Not that she isn't legally allowed to but part of the fabric of the British monarchy is that they remain politically impartial and therefore do not vote.

      Delete
    3. I agree conceptually but if you wanted to split hairs isn’t the issue around staying politically impartial in British politics? I don’t really see why she wouldn’t be able to vote in American elections. It doesn’t really impact her BRF role and as long as she didn’t overly publicize it. It rankles me as an American that a foreign institution (albeit one she is voluntarily joining) could impose such a restriction on the most fundamental American right to vote.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous 20:06, see and that is the problem. You would perceive it as a 'foreign institution' interfering with the US. That's valid and likewise Meghan could be perceived as an American interfering with a foreign country, the UK. Therefore, it would be wise to give up her American citizenship. Not doing so would lead to all sorts of troubles and questions such as the one you described.
She will be a figurehead for one country, being a citizen of another at the same time would be highly problematic, to say the least.

      Delete
    5. Is she a figure head for one country though? Or just the eventual sister in law of one. I understand constitutionally the monarch can’t vote and this makes perfect sense for me. And if she chooses to give up her American citizenship then it’s all a moot point I agree with you there. And perhaps that would be the better choice. But if she retains both then I’m not sure where the problem is if she privately votes in American elections. I think it would be bad if she campaigned or made public statements. This could become politically messy very quickly. But if all she did was vote the only thing public would be the record that she did. But if she retains an American citizenship I don’t think her right to vote should be taken away. I actually think the tax issue is the bigger issue, and if I had to bet money if they are receiving legal advice it is to renounce American citizenship to avoid double taxation. The voting thing was more a thorn in my American side :)

      Delete
    6. I'm going to have to respectfully interject on this whole American conversation. As a Canadian living in the US, I guess teased (that's the polite word for it) a lot for the fact that Canada "belongs" to Britain and that America would never be "owned" by another country. America fought some pretty big battles to not have anything to do with Britain. It makes a pretty big deal of Independence Day. Even if you are an American with dual citizenship, the US basically ignores your other affiliation. They will not recognize it.

Meghan is choosing to marry into the British Royal Family. Nobody is forcing her to do anything. I'm very sorry if I'm hurting anyone's feelings, but you can't have your cake and eat it too. Meghan cannot simply pick and choose what rules she chooses to follow or not follow, American or not. I also don't believe that her right would be taken away (should she retain citizenship, which would be silly, if for no reason other than for tax purposes). She would simply abstain.

I enjoy following the royals and I am proud to be a part of the Commonwealth. The Queen is my sovereign. Canada (and many other countries - not trying to exclude anyone here) has more of an affiliation to Britain than the USA ever will simply because of that fact. Maybe I'm a little more sensitive to this than other people because of the things I get teased for (I'm a grown woman, but it sure does get annoying after a while), but I would like to remind others that statements like "Harry is adored in the US... therefore making him a citizen will be a great idea, etc" may bother other people. Just because Harry is marrying an American does not give the USA a "claim" over him. Prince Harry is adored in many other countries. He has a duty to the UK and other countries that make up the Commonwealth. Meghan now has a duty to the UK and the Commonwealth. I have no problems with them visiting the USA and working on British-American relations, but I'm quite sorry, it simply cannot take priority over other countries that they have a duty to.

I'm sorry for the rant and I'm certainly not trying to pick on anyone (this was just the first comment I happened to stumble upon when I decided to post about this).

    7. We don't know whether Meghan has voted in US elections while living in Canada. My guess is that she does take her responsibility to vote seriously, but we have no way of knowing.

One thing is sure. If Meghan retains her US citizenship, her children will also be US citizens. The Palace has left that possibility open, by stating that Meghan will retain her US citizenship at least until she achieves UK citizenship. Interesting.

    8. The taxes would be a nightmare. I’m a US citizen and we lived for two and half years in Kuwait. The US and Singapore tax their citizens living abroad. All other nations do not. Our taxes were done professionally and were 82-90 pages! Her voting in the US would be done by mail-in ballot, obtained from the US Embassy. She could do a dual citizenship but , there are residency requirements for each country as to the number of days you stay in each nation to keep it.

From what I've read in congratulatory statements/tweets/etc from Meghan's close friends, colleagues, her parents, I'm struck by their loyalty, admiration & utter adoration for her! She obviously has earned a very special place in their hearts & I get the sense (I mean this in the kindest, positive way with no offense or disrespect intended towards Prince Harry, he's a wonderful person) that they agree that Prince Harry married up & won the lottery with her. 32. Oh my goodness, you got up all the facts so quickly!! Thanks Charlotte!!

I'm thrilled that Meghan is diving right in and accompanying Harry on Friday. I bet she'll be great at the meet and greets, she seems very warm and open.

The chapel at Windsor looks like a beautiful venue. Interesting to hear that the couple have spent time there, perhaps attending services with the Queen and Prince Phillip?

I wonder if Meghan will be paying for her dress as it wasn't mentioned with the costs absorbed by the royal family? I think it would be lovely if she does, I always liked that the Middleton's paid for Kate's dress.

This is so exciting!! I think the time between now and May will fly by!!

  33. I'm so happy that Harry finally found his lady/princess/duchess. Also happy that she has decided to dive on in. I will also second the comments you made at the end of this post. Catherine an Meghan are indeed two very different women but I think they will work together like ... well peanut butter and jam ... a favorite of mine.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Charlotte, you needn't publish this if you don't wish. I will be ceasing to follow Meghan and I'm certain many here know why.

Dogs are pack animals. They bond closely to their owner and to other dogs in their pack. To separate them is the direst thing imaginable. Leo and I have made special arrangements that should anything happen to us, our dogs would be kept together. I would paddle across an ocean before parting with them. It can kill an older dog to be abruptly separated from his fellows and from his owner.

So many other paths have been cleared for Meghan, upsetting many people, immigration, a church wedding when many others have been denied, even since 2002, that I can't imagine a way couldn't have been found to bring Bogart over.

Older dogs feel abandonment by their owner deeply. Even if they are used to her travelling, they wait for her return to them. Rehoming dogs should only be done in the most extreme circumstances. Older dogs can be a nuisance and require more care, it is true and it sounds like Meghan, enthralled with her glamourous new life, can't b troubled to make the effort.

I was concerned yesterday to hear no emotion or sincerity in her voice when she spoke about her dogs - there was not even a wobble for the one she was leaving behind. I suspect they were more a part of her persona of 'rescuing' rescues than truly beloved pets. But I've made my point and will go no further. At this point, I don't know I would believe any reason offered. I'l make no comment on the corgi story - perhaps they were deceived.

I wish all others here the joy of the wedding - I would have loved to have participated in the fashion feature but will pass and will no longer make any comment on Harry or Meghan.

Pippin would weep for poor old Bogart - the one left behind.

    1. Have you looked into the mortality rate for dogs who are flown across oceans? Ridiculously high; it's a dangerous thing to do. I've been in the position of choosing myself, and I made the kinder choice for my animal.

How absurd! Though I appreciate your care for doggos.

      Delete
    2. Julia, you have no idea why one dog is still in Canada. There could be several logical reasons that are not up to Meghan. But I guess it’s easier to paint her as the bad guy than actually think about it.

I for one am relieved that we will be spared constant haranguing and jumping to negative conclusions about Meghan at least on this blog.

      Delete
    3. This is excessively dramatic Julia. You don’t know why one dog stayed. Health issues, age issues, or perhaps he’s bonded well with his new caregiver. Dogs are successfully re-homed all the time. Meghan has consistently proven herself to be a loving and responsible pet owner, I am sure this decision was not made recklessly.

      Delete
    4. I think it's not easy to make any judgement on why Bogart was left behind. It might really be that he is too old to travel all that way. It may be kinder to leave him in Canada and it sounds like he is with people Meghan knows and therefore he probably knows them too.
Personally, I had to leave my beloved cat at my parents' house when I moved out, which still breaks my heart but he is happy and healthy there. It would not have been right to bring him, an animal used to running around outside in the countryside, to a city flat where he would have to stay inside. So it was actually the less selfish thing to do - the selfish thing would have been to bring him because I do miss him terribly still. Sometimes we have to make choices like that, they are incredibly hard and heartbreaking but what can you do?

I'm sad to hear you won't be commenting on H&M anymore - I always enjoy reading your comments on the Duchess Kate Blog.

      Delete
    5. If I am wrong, if Bogart appears, no one would be happier than I and I would happily eat one of Camilla's feathered hats which would greatly amuse my dogs. But that's not what the announcement says. I'm glad I made you happy, Gemma. Yes, I've struggled with Meghan although trying very hard to see the positive. I wasn't certain why that was - not the things I've been accused of or even what I could easily identify, but I think now I know. - But since I hugely admire Charlotte and respect others' right to enjoy a royal wedding, I'll comment no further.

I have two dogs who were taken from poor situations - as those who followed me talking about George, will remember - I talked about having to socialise one and the difficult process since she feared all men - including Leo - she worships him now and it gives me enormous pleasure to see her friendly with people. Another of my dogs still dreads travel although much better than at the start.

I support rescues extensively. Some people legitimately can't keep a dog and I'm sure you're in that category SSM. But dogs mostly die because they have to be in the hold. Meghan will be jetting all over the world - someone could fly back with Bogart in a first class seat and no dog lover in Britain would mind in the least. The mortality rate for a dog who flies in the cabin is not high - service dogs do it routinely. Every rescue will tell you - some people particularly the elderly can't keep their pets and there is a wonderful charity for that. But in most cases there are excuses, always ending in 'it's better for the dog." Sometimes, given the previous owner, it is, but it's never easy. Dogs are tremendously loyal.

I made this comment because I want people to think not just about Meghan or Julia, but the huge lifetime responsibility of caring for a dog - it has cost Leo and me countless - we joke more than our own expenses - and also all the dogs who find themselves in this sort of situation. The stories range from sad to horrific. With that I'll sign out and happily still comment on Kate.

      Delete
    6. SSM, I respect your choice about your dog just as I respect Meghan’s. We can’t know the exact circumstances of each decision. I have had friends fly their animals (myself included) with no ill effects and others with a sad outcome. I appreciate you are defending Meghan but either choice is acceptable as Meghan demonstrated by bringing Guy over, presumably by plane :)

    10. I'm sure there must be a perfectly valid reason for leaving Bogart behind. Maybe Prince Harry gave us a hint in the interview yesterday when he said that the Queen's corgis always bark when he's around! Maybe Bogart became jealous of Harry being around Meghan and the two didn't bond? Who knows?

We will probably never know the true reason, but I can't help thinking that your statement:

"they were more a part of her persona of 'rescuing' rescues than truly beloved pets."

is more than a little unfair and unkind given that we know she brought one of her dogs over to the UK! Surely if the dogs meant so little to Meghan (and I don't believe that for a single moment having seen the photos of her with them), she would have re-homed both of them before leaving Canada?

I'm really sorry to hear that you seem to have developed such a poor impression of Meghan for some reason Julia. I hope she wins you round. Camilla's comments today certainly suggest that she holds Meghan in very high regard and she's a great dog lover. I'm sure she wouldn't have made such lovely comments about someone she thought had abandoned a dog for no good reason.

      Delete
    11. Julia, I actually have two dogs who, in all fairness, really don't care much for each other haha. They just have very different characters and I'm confident if I separated them they would both be fine. I'm also a huge animal lover, I used to work with animals, am vegetarian, etc. It's hard to know the circumstances here. Yes, most of the time you wouldn't separate the pack. Maybe she didn't know anyone who could take both dogs? I imagine she wanted leave it with someone she knew to be able to visit while in Toronto. There was no emotion in her voice in the interview...they were trying to keep it light, and I imagine if there's something going on the engagement interview wouldn't be the right time to discuss it.

      Delete
    12. When we consider how many of the media stories about Harry and Meghan were dead wrong and were spun with reference to "reliable sources," nothing more; I think it behooves us all not to rush to judgement about the dogs either.

Let's also remember that we are not owed any explanations. Whatever our views about dogs, we are not the ones who must decide what is best for an animal we know nothing about.

Let's also remember that when Meghan and Harry spent time together every two weeks, someone had to care for the dogs. That's likely been the same person or family and the dog will likely be comfortable and deeply loved in both homes.

Thank you, Charlotte, for setting boundaries regarding comments on this blog. I no longer comment on Duchess Kate as the tone there got so vitriolic that there was little joy in reading or contributing to the comments. I continue to read your excellent posts on both sites and truly appreciate them.

I especially enjoyed the point (at about 11:08 or so) in the official interview when the interviewer used the word "husband." Harry's response, which lasted about 1 or 2 seconds, was absolutely precious. Though it was a delight to watch from start to finish, that reaction was my favourite moment in the video.

That big touch soldier guy. :) That was very cute and endearing. He will be a very good and faithful husband I think. Now if he would just stop saying that "h" word. It isn't becoming to his intelligence or his position. And he is a very intelligent man in my opinion. Nor will that word be worthwhile when they have children.

    16. Julia, have you considered the possibility that Bogart has a condition that means he cannot be brought into the UK or on the advice of a vet it was determined that he could not safely fly. There are so many things that we do not know about this decision. Sadly, you have assumed the worse about a person and situation you know nothing about.

      Delete
    17. Julia, as difficult as it would be for me to do, in my head, I can understand putting an animal first and making the difficult decision to leave it in a familiar environment. And if her life has involved as much travel as we heard yesterday, then it sounds like this is not a new scenario for Bogart. However, perhaps she should have left both dogs with the same family. Again, putting them first.

  44. I am so excited to have another couple's engagements to follow along with William and Kate's! Hopefully they will alternate so when we're in a Kate "famine," we can watch Meghan and vice versa! As for Meghan having to leave one of her dogs behind, we really have no idea as to the details. I don't think we should rush to judge.

  45. Charlotte - as always, you have made wonderfully wise decisions and statements about Meghan and Kate. I love that each woman has her own place on your website. Each woman is different, but each will bring much good to the world. What wonderful role models William, Kate, Harry, and Meghan are for today's youth! Thank you for your continuing good work! 46. I am SOOO pleased they have chosen St George's, I do hope they can keep it a truly private ceremony away from cameras. I was thinking the chapel was too small to cope with cameras but I now recall in my long distant childhood I used to take pleasure in going to the Christmas Day service there. This was nothing to do with Christian devotion, but a most un-Christian desire to get out of doing the washing up :-[ Too funny to think you used to be able to wander in and out of the Castle grounds at will. But I do recall being able to watch the evening news on tv and having the satisfaction of working out which back-of-head was my own. So I think cameras must have got in as far as the aisle, but I'm pretty sure they can't get up to where the ceremony takes place, so hopefully Harry and Meghan can take relatively private vows. And they have the added advantage of those good castle walls all round them making security so much easier. Perfect!

  47. Wow thanks Charlotte for this great post ! They really are jumping in head first!! Getting married in may I just can't wait!! Nice to wait after Kate's baby is born too! I love St George's chapel what a gorgeous place. That's cool that she is not Catholic but it would be ok if she was but teaches us not to just assume the media is always correct I guess. Meghan will make a stunning bride. I think Meghan is doing public engagements faster than Kate because Meghan is older more mature at the wedding time and because she is an actress and humanitarian who has already been doing professional engagements and interviews so she is more ready. Happy news!! I'm no fan of Camilla but her words were very nice to hear.

I am confused... why does Meghan have to be baptised if she is already Protestant/Episcopal? Does she have to be baptised again into the Anglican church?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sonja, I can't be sure of course but I suppose she wasn't baptised in either of the two churches. As far as I know, they usually baptise only adult people, so she could have belonged to the congregation because/if her mother or father attended without being baptised herself. So by baptism she becomes a member of the church - in this case Church of England. I think if she had been baptised as a Baptist or Episcopalian she wouldn't need a baptism, just a sort of "transfer" from one church to another. Major Christian denominations often respect/validate each other's baptisms. After all, the sense and substance of the baptism is the same in all of them.

      Delete
    2. Children do get baptized as well. I was baptized as a baby in the Episcopal church. Some demonization do it differently. Parents can decide to do neither & leave it up to the child to decide when the want to be baptized.

My last church did what I would considered public baptisms. The people of all different ages chose to be baptized as a public declaration of the acceptance of JC as their savior.

The below link has some specifics for the Episcopal denomination. I also added the information for the Episcopal church in case people wondered why we were talking about it.

The church was organized after the American Revolution, when it became separate from the Church of England, whose clergy are required to swear allegiance to the British monarch as Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

      Delete
    3. The US Episcopal Church split from the UK Episcopal Church. I am thinking Meghan’s baptism is also to formalize her role in the RF. Just a guess on my part. Duchess Kate was confirmed before her wedding if I recall correctly.

  50. I said to my colleague yesterday that the Wedding would be the end of May because there are a few things already happening in April for the BRF. End of May allows for the new baby, is far enough away from W&K's anniversary so H&M will have their own celebratory month, and is before Trooping, which I predict will be the first major event Meghan will be a part of. I also though St George's, again to be distinct from W&K but also a more intimate affair (despite the possible broadcast!) because their whole courtship was an intimate affair.

In regards to Christmas, I wonder if Meghan will be at Sandringham but won't do the public walk to church.

  52. They are both warm and genuine people. I saw Harry speaking at Invictus Games. He can warm up any audience with his honestly delivered messages and you feel immediately engaged. Hard to do that with an audience of thousands. And Megan seems equally direct and straightforward, so I am looking forward to seeing the impact of their work. And then she declared upfront that is always wanted to be a working person, not a lady who lunches. That will bring a fresh perspective, I am sure.

  53. I am sure some of her jumping in so quickly has to do with the fact that it will be a wonderful way to start to learn about the UK and for her to start making connections. She has no family in the area, a few friends but not tons of close friends, and she has left a full time job. Also allows Harry to continue his work while spending more time with Meghan before the crazy wedding stuff takes over. The plus to Meghan having been married before is she at least has had some experience with thinking about and planning a wedding before. The plus for the two of them is the BRF has all the connections and history of planning weddings:):).

  54. 👒Meghan is going to be one uber busy woman for the next five months. She will most like have a personal assistant but who? We'll get to meet her PPO Friday perhaps. And, I'm excited to see their formal Royal engagement photos.

Perhaps they can transport Bogart via a personal luxury transoceanic yacht so the air pressure in flight won't be an issue. I hope he is strong enough to cross the ocean. I'm putting a call forth now for transoceanic luxury yacht owners to volunteer their service and vessel, and a traveling veterinarian to accompany him,
    pleeease. lol, (no, seriously). :)
That may be the option they are planning on using if Bogart is strong enough. Hopefully 🙏, he is.

Firstly, Charlotte, this and Duchess Kate, are a pleasure to follow and you are so quick and timely with updates - thank you. I was so excited about the engagement i was checking for updates in the early hours of yesterday and have watched the interview more than once. I knew Meghan would hit the ground running and the fact she is embarking on engagements already is no surprise to me. William and his brother have each chosen the woman that fits them and both women are just fine in my books. I think the crowds on Friday will be unbelievable and I'd love to be there💍💍💍

  59. Charlotte, thank you so much for your truly wonderful work on HRHDK and this blog. I don't always have as much energy and time to spend as I'd like, but whenever I read them it is always such a pleasure. And my absolute **first** go-to source for a reliable, balanced, thoughtful perspective. And finally I really appreciate your reminding us all to remember that Kate and Meghan are not in competition with each others but are individuals with their own unique, different, valuable qualities and strengths, and that both can contribute positively to the work of the BRF. Occasionally I have to take a break from the comments when they are very fiesty or critical (not to say that I am not like that sometimes, too, and equally need reminding!!), and so I am very grateful for the tone you set on the blog.

Looking forward very much to reading both blogs in the months ahead, which will undoubtedly be a lot of fun and very interesting as engagements for Harry and Meghan start to happen, and continue for William and Kate.

  60. So very sad and disappointed to hear the news about Bogart. While I am sure he is with good friends it is not the same as living with his other companion, Guy, and the woman he trusts and loves as his owner, Meghan. While every other aspect of this engagement makes me so happy, I find this situation (of which admittedly I know little about aside from what has been reported) very sad. I have two rescue dogs myself. They are very bonded and I couldn't imagine ever leaving one behind, even if it was with close family and friends that I trusted completely.

    2. I think that there is a way because expense is not an issue. As upsetting as this is, I have thought of a few scenarios that would make it OK. I saw an Instragram of Marcus and I think it was Bogart cuddled on the kitchen floor. While Meghan has been so busy with work and visiting Harry, perhaps someone other than just a dog walker took care of the dogs. Maybe they stayed with Marcus or Jessica, who has three kids. Perhaps Bogart became bonded with his caretaker. I would indeed never have a kind thought again if Bogart was just left, but I think we have to assume that there is a reason. Maybe he was found to have a heart condition or cancer.Maybe he truly is happier where he is. Just the publicity of leaving your pet would be so negative that M&H would avoid it at all costs except for the good of Bogart.

We have 2 rescue dogs (we had seven but they died from old age ailments) and now 10 rescue cats. I can't IMAGINE them living anywhere else, but we work at home and spend all day with them. Bogart and Guy must have spent a lot of time with someone else in addition to Meghan.

      Delete
    3. The photo above shows a problem with Bogart's right ear. One of my dogs was on prednisone for several months in order to correct damage she did by shaking her head too vigorously after a bath. If Bogart is on a course of prednisone, he will be having side effects (unusual hunger and thirst, frequent urination, need to protect the ear) that would make flying very unwise. I am speculating, of course, but this is one possibility. Meghan sounded as though she was sorry to leave him, but he is with friends who have probably cared for him during her frequent travels. She was away a lot long before she met Harry. Let us not rush to judgment!

      Delete
    4. I agree, and makes me feel really sad. They can't hire a jet to bring him over? I would find that absolutely gut wrenching to be without one of my pets. Very sad.

  61. This is precisely what I was hoping for with Meghan -- that we would get to see her jump in immediately with the work. I'm so excited to watch her as it all unfolds! I can't wait to see their dynamic together during engagements, too. And it'll also be interesting to see how her royal fashion evolves.

Very sad to hear about her doggo back in the States, but it is incredibly dangerous for dogs to be flown overseas (it can often result in death), so I'm not surprised at her leaving the elder one in the comfort of a caring home. I hope they're both ok. I can't imagine having to leave one of my dogs. They so quickly become members of the family!

Overall, I can't imagine the changes she is going through. It's very exciting, but also probably overwhelming. I'd be a little sad to leave behind my US citizenship, as well as my former charities. I'm sure Meghan will take it all in stride, though, and very quickly find ways to support those causes she cares about.

  65. Wonderful news, you can tell that Meghan isn't the kind of woman to be passive in any way and I think that's exactly what the royals could do with!
I do wonder how much she will fit in with the discrete, rather introverted world of the monarchy, but I am sure she will be instructed and coached throughout the next few months and years... And as with Kate she will find her own way and role, no doubt. Can't help but feel like Kate and William might relieved not to have to be the focus of the royal house now that M and H are engaged... It doesn't feel like a role that they have been entirely comfortable with as they both aren't super outgoing people to begin with, and with baby number 3 on the way I can imagine maximum privacy is preferred!

  71. Thank you Charlotte for the as always interesting and well written post. I have always found it fascinating that probably since Queen Victoria the British monarchy have projected the face of the nation and its peoples. Probably the biggest assest Meghan brings is her genetics. The many immigrants from the last few decades in Britain now in the Royal family have a connection. Important for relevance. There was a tweet on one of the journalist's feeds from a member of the general public to say how happy she was to have a royal she could identify with. We have short memories but many of the the things that will make life easier for Harry and Meghan in the short term have been trail blazed by William and Kate - partner choice outside royalty and aristocracy, the big involvement of Kate's family in their lives, sharing times like Christmas etc. I have seen this as testament to how important extended families on both sides are in all our lives. There has been lots of comment on the Anglican church conducting the marriage service when other people have been denied. And this being seen as privilege. However this may well be the precedent that paves the way for a different view in the church for all people. I am not commenting on the rights or wrongs of Church policy but more on the Royal in this case HM factor in progressing social change and acceptance. Perhaps the hardest thing for Meghan to learn will be the ability to be passionate advocate for the causes she espouses whilst remaining apolitical. That is hard for people used to speaking their mind. It will be lovely to see the younger generation developing their story and with reasonable coordination of schedules perhaps even keep the media with enough material to appease the 24 hour need for clicks.

  74. Hi.

I know my commenting comes and goes but sometimes I feel more comfortable posting and other times I don’t but these past two days have been quite exciting! I was not all that surprised with the choice of location for the wedding. Harry and Meghan totally seem more low-key. I can see myself sitting on a patio hanging out with them , I love William and Kate but I feel they’d be more of a sit down dinner couple. Strictly my personal opinion and honestly, I’d take either scenario to hang out with them.

Friday will be very interesting to see how she handles her first engagements. I’m sure she’ll do wonderfully making her all the more perfect for Harry. I do have to say, I’m very curious to see what she wears for her first official engagement. I would love to see her be a little bold in style/colors/accessories - her hair and skin tone would lend well to bolder colors and styles - unlike myself who is extremely pale - there are plenty of colors I need to avoid. Lol. I’m not talking cheetah print of something crazy of course but just brighter colors and different styles. We very much know Kate’s style - now I want to know Meghan’s too!

It’ll be interesting once they settle in and do their first joint engagement with William and Kate. Can you imagine?!

    Is it May yet?

  75. Regarding Meghan taking a quiz to gain British citizenship.🇬🇧
There is a cute video of Meghan from 2012 taking a British quiz as a promotion for "Suits" airing in the U.K.
(Each of the actors had to take a quiz.)
It is on You Tube, "Meghan Markle Fails Quiz on Britishness"/Suits/Dave. 3:47 minute run time.
    (a little serendipity, yeh?) 🇬🇧

  76. Charlotte, may I please point out that we are not “the Episcopalian Church”. It is the Protestant Episcopal Church US. We split from the Church of England after independence, but remained part of the Anglican Communion. We were booted out (temporarily, we hope) over a disagreement about marriage equality and the status of LBGTQ people.
In order to be an Episcopalian, Meghan would have to be baptized in a Christian Church, then confirmed in ours. Seems the C of E has that well in hand.
