Harry and Meghan Begin a New Chapter as They Carry Out First Official Engagements in Nottingham

Four days after their engagement announcement, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle marked a major royal milestone as they carried out their first official engagements in Nottingham today.

News of the visit was both very exciting and unexpected. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly Meghan is diving into her new role. For anyone entering the Royal family, especially one who will have an important part to play, there is so much to learn and numerous layers to consider, given the myriad duties senior royals undertake. I understand today's engagements are the first of many around the UK which will offer Meghan invaluable experience. As Meghan's not from the UK, she's clearly keen to get to know as many places and organisations as possible before the wedding.

During the engagement interview Meghan elaborated on this point, saying: "Very early out of the gate I think we realised once you have access or a voice that people are willing to listen to, comes a lot of responsibility which I take seriously and at the same time in the beginning few months and now being boots on the ground in the UK, I'm excited just to really get to know more about the different communities here, the smaller organisations working on the same causes I've always been passionate about. And also being able to go around to the Commonwealth. I think it's just the beginning."

For their first official engagements, it was important to Prince Harry to introduce his future bride to Nottingham, a community that holds a special place in his heart. Harry has spent a significant amount of time there both publicly and privately since he first visited in 2013 when he was exploring issues surrounding youth violence. He is immensely proud of the partnerships and friendships he has built there. Kensington Palace noted: "Ms Markle cannot wait to meet many of the young people Prince Harry has told her so much about.

The day began at the National Justice Museum where the couple received a warm welcome as crowds gathered to greet them on their first walkabout.

It was the perfect way to greet members of the public for the first time and a great start to the day.

Meghan was given flowers and congratulatory cards.

Meghan told one well-wisher "I can't believe it, I've been made so welcome and I can't believe it".

At another point, she said: "I'm so happy, It's just such a thrill to be here."

This video from Victoria Murphy is priceless :)

One of my favourite royal reporters Richard Palmer received a handshake from Meghan.

Victoria Murphy described Meghan as a "natural" with the crowds.

Meghan gave one of her handwarmers to a member of the crowd.

Prince Harry greets locals.

Meghan with little royal fans :)

People reports:

'While the two were greeting the crowds, one bold fan asked what it was like to be with someone like Meghan “as a ginger. “It’s great isn’t it … unbelievable!” Harry joked in response.
Among the lucky people getting a quick chat was Caroline Cartwright, who told Meghan she and husband Andrew were big fans of Suits. “I told her Mike should be here,” Caroline told PEOPLE. “She said ‘I don’t think he would be today!’ She is just as beautiful as she is on TV. She is absolutely perfect, most wonderful and perfect for him.”
Claire Kelsall handed Harry a celebration card made by her daughter Ruby, 7. “The card had ‘Congratulations Harry and Meghan’. She drew a picture of the ring and it had a picture of the couple inside,” Kelsall, 28, tells PEOPLE. “I told him that we are really big fans and would see him at the wedding. He was very, very pleased and asked where Ruby was. She is in school. I told him we’d come and see him at the wedding. He was very pleased with the card and put it inside his coat. She adds, “They are a lovely couple. They looked lovely together.”
When the actress met people she made a point of introducing herself saying “Hi, I’m Meghan.”

Can you spot Meghan?

Today is World AIDS Day. The late Princess Diana was a passionate advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness, and her work in destigmatizing has been credited with changing attitudes of those all over the world. The cause is incredibly close to Harry's heart too, and in carrying on his mother's work, it's no surprise he chose World AIDS Day for what would already be a particularly high profile day in his life.

What did locals who met the future royal think. The Telegraph has the scoop:

'One group of mothers had brought five small children for their first encounter with royalty, with Claire Saribi saying they could not pass up the opportunity to show them history in action. Her son Idris, one, had been practising saying "congratulations" ahead of the walkabout, while Zoë and Emilia, who are three and friends from ballet class, made a card covered in star-shaped stickers.
Ms Markle crouched down to meet them and ask how old they were, and thank them for the card. Helena Bottomly, who gave a bag of Haribo to Meghan to pass to her fiance, stood with three friends who had brought red and white roses, said: "She was really pleased with the presents. We congratulated her." Asked for their assessment of Ms Markle, the friends said: "She's a little gem."
Meghan, 36, showed that she is already learning the royal rules when it comes to official visits, politely declining to pose for a selfie, telling one couple: “We’re not allowed.” Barbara Miller, 63, from Nottingham, said: “She said thank you very much for braving the cold. “I said ‘can we have a selfie?’. She said ‘we’re not allowed to do selfies’. She was so pleasant, she was lovely. She said to my husband ‘your hands are really cold’."

Harry and Meghan visited the Nottingham Contemporary which hosted a Terrence Higgins Trust World AIDS Day charity fair.

Nottingham Contemporary is a contemporary art centre in the Lace Market area of Nottingham, on a site said to be the oldest in the city. To celebrate the area's history of lace manufacture, the cladding of the building is embossed with a traditional Nottingham lace pattern.

They met representatives from Terrence Higgins Trust Nottingham, the African Institute for Social Development and Champions for Change, who each support local communities in Nottingham and do specific work around HIV/AIDS.

They also met representatives from the Food Chain and BHIVA, which support people living with HIV and works towards eradicating the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.

Harry has worked with the Terrence Higgins Trust in the past to raise awareness. How did the organisation begin? Terry Higgins was one of the first people in the UK to die with AIDS. He died aged 37, on 4 July 1982 in St Thomas' Hospital, London. By naming the Trust after Terry, the founder members – his partner and friends – hoped to personalise and humanise AIDS in a very public way.

More on the history of the trust:

'From its small beginnings in a flat in central London, Terrence Higgins Trust has grown to become the UK's leading HIV and sexual health charity, and one of the largest in Europe. It has always been at the forefront of the fight against HIV and AIDS, and since it was formed, the needs of people living with, and affected by, HIV have been fundamental to its development.
The charity's roots were in the gay community and, for many years, the HIV epidemic in the UK affected mainly gay men. Nonetheless, we've always worked in an equal way with gay men, haemophiliacs, sex-workers and drug users from the start. As the shape of the epidemic here has changed, so has the charity. There are now nearly as many African people living in the UK diagnosed with HIV and in care as gay men now, though the majority of new infections continue to be among gay men. So existing services have been developed and new services introduced to meet ever-changing needs.'

Their campaign this year is See Red. "Today, people all over the world will wear a red ribbon with pride, without fear, shame or stigma. On World AIDS Day, the colour red represents solidarity, love, activism and remembrance. The more we See Red, the sooner we will end the HIV epidemic." If you would like to donate or find out more information please click here. £50 could help run one session at a newly diagnosed group.

The couple wore their red ribbons in support of the campaign.

Next, Harry and Meghan travelled on to Nottingham Academy where met head teachers from the Academy and local primary schools as well Full Effect staff and mentors.

Following his time in Nottingham, Prince Harry established the Full Effect programme in 2013 supported by the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The programme supports children and young people in an effort to prevent their involvement in youth violence and crime through a combination of early intervention, mentorship, and training. As Meghan will become a patron of the Royal Foundation after the wedding, it was an excellent opportunity for her to see the success of one of its programmes first hand.

It is lovely to observe how tactile Harry and Meghan were with each other throughout the day.

During their visit to the Academy, Prince Harry and Ms Markle heard first-hand from staff about the positive impact Full Effect is having on the local school communities and students.

Harry and Meghan had the opportunity to meet some of the children benefiting from the programme's Friday Night Youth Club which began in September.

More from the Mail Online's story:

'Chris O'Hanlon, who is a peer mentor for Positively UK, a charity which helps people newly diagnosed with HIV, talked to them about his own diagnosis and the importance of fitness in dealing with HIV. 'I spoke to Meghan about my passion for yoga,' said Mr O'Hanlon, 40, a clinical hypnotherapist from Luton. 'I said, 'You are a big yogi and love your yoga.' She said, 'Absolutely, I love incorporating it into my life, it is something I have always done.'
He said the couple were 'so natural' together. 'They are very personable. It is very easy to talk to them because they are so open. They have a very jokey attitude. You worry that you have to be 'They seem amazingly comfortable together. You can see that it's a perfect match. 'This may have been her first official engagement, but she was a complete natural at it. She was incredibly observant about what we were talking about, and very interested. She picked up on quite a few things that I was saying, particularly in terms of my own diagnosis. She was very empathetic.'

Prince Harry and Meghan also caught up with Chantelle Stefanovic, a project coordinator for the Full Effect programme, who recently spoke about the issues facing children and young people in St Ann’s at the inaugural summit of the Obama Foundation in Chicago.

Chantelle is actually a significant part of the reason for Harry's involvement in the area.

She wrote Harry a searingly honest letter explaining her troubled background and the issues in the area. Harry revealed: "She said: 'You need to know my back story and exactly what happens in this community.' I really respected and admired that - it was exactly what I needed to know, we were in the right place." At the summit, Chantelle spoke about her life: "When you are...growing up knowing that your mum is missing her dinner to feed you, all you want to do is help, and you help by any means necessary. The solution for me when I was younger was to help in a way that was quite negative."

You can view Harry and Chantelle's participation at the Obama Summit in the video below.

The couple watched a Hip-Opera performance.

And posed with the cast for photos.

Moving on to what Meghan wore for her first official engagements.

For a very chilly morning in Nottingham, Meghan wrapped up in her Mackage Elodie Double Breasted Military Coat. The piece is described as "A broad, draping collar, epaulets and belted cuffs bring a commanding yet elegant presence to a double-breasted military jacket cut with an elongated maxi silhouette. A touch of cashmere adds softness to the dense, wool-blend fabric, while a deep midnight navy shade gives the striking piece a timeless quality that elevates any ensemble." Meghan has had the piece by the popular Canadian brand for some time. It is now available for pre-order on the Mackage website retailing at $790.

With thanks to Meghan's Fashion, Wolford confirmed Meghan wore their Colorado Bodysuit. It is available at ShopBop and Barneys.

ShopBop

The fantastic team at Meghan's Mirror identified Meghan's skirt is the Joseph Laurel Full Midi Skirt. The beige cotton piece retails for £595 at FarFetch, Matches and Net-A-Porter where it is discounted by up to 50%. Joseph is a popular British brand which has been worn by a number of royals over the years.

Kurt Geiger confirmed Meghan wore their Violet Black Suede Over The Knee Boots. The £229 boots are described as "Dramatic in style and contemporary in design, these boots sit on a sleek cone-shaped heel and slope to a smart pointed toe. Padding in the sock ensures a comfortable fit so they can be worn effortlessly from desk to dinner."

They are available in limited sizing at House of Fraser, John Lewis and Kurt Geiger.

Meghan's gorgeous handbag is the Strathberry Midi Tote in white navy and deep red (with thanks to Meghan's Mirror). The tote features a sleek design and beautiful leather construction. Strathberry is a Scottish luxury accessories brand. The tote is available at Saks Fifth Avenue for $675.

It can also be purchased in a wide selection of colours on the Strathberry website.

Strathberry

We are seeing very clear signs of The Meghan Effect taking off. The Telegraph writes: Meghan Markle boosts two British brands in Nottingham - with her bag selling out in minutes:

'Markle’s beige skirt was bought from the cult label Joseph, priced at £595. Sunderland-born creative director Louise Trotter has worked hard to reinvigorate the brand in recent years, bringing it onto the London Fashion Week schedule and making effortlessly cool pieces to covet. “It was a total surprise,” Trotter, fresh off the Eurostar, tells The Telegraph of the spotting. “I’m thrilled that Meghan chose to wear Joseph on her first public official outing with Prince Harry. The skirt is from the autumn 2017 runway collection and is a take on a classic chino military skirt that's sliced, with added pleats and volume.”
Similarly, despite a well-documented new-found passion for Somerset-made Mulberry bags, Markle kept things understated by choosing a tote by Edinburgh-based Strathberry. Ironically, Markle's tri-colour design is only sold at the department store Saks on New York’s Fifth Avenue, but the brand has confirmed to The Telegraph that they sent her the style a few weeks ago. With prices starting at £225 for their luxury leather bags, she is perhaps showing an understanding that she needs to give fans a glimpse of something they will be able to buy themselves.
"We are thrilled and honoured to see Meghan Markle carrying our Strathberry Midi Tote," a spokesperson for the brand told us this morning. "It was a fantastic surprise to see that Meghan selected one of our core Strathberry styles to carry on her first royal engagement. We are delighted at the news of her and Harry’s engagement and wish them all the best for this exciting period."

A nice video from CBC News.

During their engagement interview, Meghan spoke of beginning a new chapter of her life. That chapter successfully started today, not only for her as she prepares to become a royal, but for the Royal family in general. She must have been nervous. When they arrived initially I thought she looked a little taken aback, however, the moment she began meeting people and shaking hands she appeared completely at ease. Her excitement at the welcome she received was evident and she really took the time to talk to people.  As people who met Meghan said, she's a natural. At the engagements she was completely professional - one would think she had been doing it for years. I very much enjoyed seeing Meghan combine pieces from her own wardrobe with British brands. It was also wonderful to see how affectionate Harry and Meghan were with each other throughout the day too. These two make one terrific pairing. :)

Nottingham gave them a very warm welcome for the first of many engagements in the months ahead. I would class today as a resounding success, well done Meghan!

    1. I agree with a later commenter that Harry is worried about security. I read that one person asked him what it was like to be with Meghan "as a ginger." It is even possible that someone could yell something ugly. Meghan looked absolutely wonderful in every way---friendly, happy, secure, and gorgeous. Harry is indeed a lucky man. Wish we had such people in the US instead of what we now have. :)

  4. Thanks for the quick post! THEY’RE HOLDING HANDS AT AN OFFICIAL ENGAGEMENT!!! :-)

She’s wearing stylish coulottes (sp?) with boots plus an oversized trench and carrying a purse. Love it!

I’m very happy for Harry as he has said the work is lonely without someone to do it with. I wish them a lifetime of happiness!

    2. I agree, sg, her first public engagement, he’s likely feeling a little anxious about Meghan’s safety. I noticed in the video the bodyguard just to her left seemed like he was on high alert for anything out of the ordinary.

    3. I'm guessing he's got lots of concerns on his mind, as he brings her into this life! I think she's taking to it like a duck to water! As he sees that she's fine & as they do more, I think we'll see him relax a bit & have that more relaxed manner we're used to from Harry! I just am thrilled that he has such a well matched & loving partner! Well Done Harry & Meghan! :) xoxo
ps: I was struck by the pics/video when they were first inside. Meghan standing next to Harry holding her hands in front of her, could have been Kate standing next to William in the early years. No clutch, but same stance! :) The learning curve is universal & something both couples will have gone through. I'm so thrilled! Such a Wonderful Partnership & How Wonderful To No Longer have Harry Solo! :) xoxo

    6. Wow I just listened to the first half hour of the video and now understand where Harry is really coming from and a whole insight / deeper understanding about the motivations regarding foundations and charities. I had respect before but now I have a whole other level of understanding, Who cares about the scarf, the bag, the hair etc......what's most important is the work being carried out and helping young people like Chantelle. I know Harry & Meghan can have a huge positive impact united in their passions- how exciting to see that unfold in the future!!! The UK & planet are very fortunate to have these guardians involved in serious issues that affect our future generations- now that's creating positive change and doing something worthwhile with your life! I was left feeling very inspired and hopeful realising how powerful this union will be in addition to all the other great work being carried out by the BRF.

They seem so natural & really genuine when they meet people and I think their compassion & empathy for others will go a long way in helping to make a positive difference in people's lives. Harry & Meghan were dressed very appropriately & they both looked comfortable and approachable. Well done to them!

    1. I agree Avee. Harry is due for his time in the sun as he introduces his fiancé to the world. I don't think it's fair to pass judgment on this first official engagement for the couple, having no references to compare from previous engagements.

I've mentioned this before; I don't now how Harry had the patience and tolerance for the royal "trio" label which I assume was William's idea. I am guessing William thought that including Harry with the Cambridge's in many public events, given Harry's popularity and individual causes, would enhance the overall success of the Kensington arm of royal family. It was always awkward optics for me when the trio appeared together. I never understood why Kate was flanked between the two brothers. As the potential heir to the throne, it would make sense that he would be the center person in this group to reflect his status.

I hope that Harry's new found independence with the marriage to Meghan will enrich the royal foundation work and beyond. He seems very happy to finally have a partner by his side.

Charlotte, thank you for all the work you do for the readers on this site. Simply awesome!

    2. I think the sole reason (no ulterior motive) for William including Harry is LOVE ❤️.
I think William did not want Harry to feel left out, and The Trust also encompasses Harry's Royal charitable interests and their combined interests so representing the three of them in photos makes sense to me. I doubt that William coined the term "trio" but what a beautiful trio it is. And now they add a fourth to the photos. yay. :)

    3. Avee - I completely agree. I am sooo happy for him to finally have a partner and get to focus on building and growing his own family unit, while remaining a senior royal and working with others in the family.

My comments on the outing (which I'm mostly copying over from another blog where I post...hope that's okay!):

I was blown away by the whole day and the comments from people from the crowd are all very positive and supportive. I'll start with my only (very small) criticism — her hair! I would have much preferred it to be pulled back (maybe a loose side-pony, which would have looked smashing with the turtleneck). But, with the exception of Meghan's hair being down (and therefore needing to be brushed out of her face in much the same way Kate constantly does), I thought she looked spot on. I loved everything about her look and everything about Harry's look - even his natty scarf. They both looked professional and polished with nothing distracting or inappropriate. Possibly a bit staid with the dark colors they both wore, but I can live with that for a first engagement on a freezing winter day!

Most importantly though, I loved her interest and engagement with all of the people during each part of the visit. She looked nervous (to me) at first, during the walkabout, but by the time they got inside, she looked much more relaxed. I thought she just came across as authentic, joyful, and polished. I loved that she didn't mug for the cameras at all, made eye contact when shaking hands, and even did things like giving out one of her own handwarmers to someone in the crown and picking up someone's dropped glove!

And I loved that the couple was authentic to who they are and engaged in some light PDA during the walkabout or when standing listening to folks inside. Personally, I think the initial hand-holds, hugs, and arm rubs were because she was very nervous and Harry was trying to help relax and reassure her. Plus, lots of other royals have held hands on official engagements (and anyone can find on a simple google search), so I wasn't bothered by it.

Also...Chantelle! The amazing Chantelle. I absolutely love the smile of pure joy on Meghan's face when she met Chantelle. It was everything! I knew we'd see the 3 of them together at today's engagement and I wasn't disappointed. Yay!

    1. I do hope that their focus will first and foremost be about substance, such as HIV/AIDS and youth crime prevention, which is what this event is about. Shame if people paid more attention to their sartorial choices than the causes they are trying to put a spotlight on.

    2. This blog is about the "life and STYLE" of Meghan, so it is appropriate to comment on sartorial choices.

    3. Well it is a fashion blog... but Charlotte always does such a nice job highlighting both aspects. There's room for both. Great causes for sure. They look happy and friendly. She is very warm with the crowds of well wishers. Not a fan of her look today. Except the coat and bag-drool-worthy!

    4. Totally agree, just watch the video posted and you will have more depth/understanding rather than being concerned if Meghan made the right clothing choices???? I mean get some perspective!!!!!

    5. Since Meghan used to have a very beautiful life and style blog, even I think she would be pleased to know people take the time to talk about her sartorial choices other than her amazing work. I think people can enjoy both things :)
I didn't like her fashion choice today, that reminds me of what Kate wore last january (I think) while in Sandrigham and at the time people said that outfit made her look like an old lady so I don't understand why one should say today Meghan was dressed stylish. That's an old lady outfit IMO.
But I would leave the girl the time to master the art of dressing appropriately for this kind of events.

    6. Amazing how we all see the same outfit and can feel so differently about it. IN my opinion it is highly stylish and very attractive on her. The coat and purse are fab, the boots very on trend, and the full romantic skirt is so very feminine. The frayed hem, while perhaps not to many people's taste, is an example of her edginess, and perhaps "American flare". Love it all!! Including her genuine warmth and spontaneity 🙂

  14. I love so many things about today. I revise my previous statement about the bottom being a too/coulottes. I could ant quite tell before. I think the color combination of khaki and black is such a classic, elegant look. Completely appropriate but she also keeps it trendy and youthful. I probably would have stuck with either navy/khaki or black/khaki, but that's me.

I think it's adorable that they were holding hands/warms around each other. But, in watching the video(on twitter) of them entering the main room, I think it is more Harry guiding Meghan and less couple behavior. I think he kind of touches her elbow to make her stop walking, it was hard to tell. And I(secretly) love that she does the same thing Kate does, with the hands folded'ish in front of her. I know it can seem weird, but she can't cross her arms and to leave them just dangling seems awkward.

I do wish that she either wore a red ribbon or her earrings were red or something as a nod towards World AIDS Day.

    2. I think dangly red earrings would have been lovely. Kate has some, big red tassels. I could just see Meghan running across from NotCott to KP in the early morning: "Kate, Kate, can I borrow those red earrings you wore a few months ago? Oh, hi, George, have a great day at school! 15. Great work Charlotte! This is a great day of engagements, I'm so excited to see it unfold. The Terry Higgins trust is an excellent organisation, I'm so glad to see them mark World AIDS day with their visit. Does anyone know why they aren't wearing red ribbons? I'll definitely be wearing mine today!
I'm excited to see Full Effect getting more attention. I think it's such an important area and I really love that Harry is trying to focus on how to prevent youth violence/gang membership. Young people have so much potential, and often kids in troubled situations don't get the support they need to live up to it. Obviously Harry is extremely privileged and had resources available to him that others did not, but he has admitted to feeling troubled and overwhelmed himself as a young man, and I wonder if he empathises with those that don't have access to the help he did as a result? I really appreciated learning more about the initiative when Harry and Chantelle spoke at the Obama Summit in October.
Meghan looks really at ease and so happy to be there, and it's so cute to see Harry playing the supportive spouse-to-be. Meghan's obviously a natural people person, and it was great to see her embark in her own on her very first walkabout! I'm so excited to watch her learn more about her future role and the UK. She's off to a really great start! On a more superficial note, I love her coat and bag! I'm not a fan of the skirt based off of what a I could see of it, but I'm absolutely dying over the fact that Harry and Meghan appear to have colour-coordinated😂😂😂! Harry looks very handsome, and it's wonderful to see him so happy💕.

Now that more information about their later engagements has been added I wanted to say that I really enjoyed learning more about the Friday Night Youth Club, it will be interesting to see how it progresses. I also thought it was lovely that H&M for to watch a Hip-Opera! The performing arts can be a great therapeutic tool in allowing young people to express themselves who might otherwise struggle to do so. It also can be a great stress releaver to have a creative outlet such as this and it can help to build a sense of community and develop teamwork skills. It must have been lovely for Meghan to feel in her element, I'm curious to see if she chooses to champion the performing arts in her new role.

  17. ❄️It is 41 degrees with winds of 12 mph in Nottingham today according internet weather info. Still, I think Meghan's outfit is a conglomeration that doesn't make sense. Unless both she and Harry have bulletproof vests on. Kinda of doubt it but only kinda. Maybe they do, lol. Not a fan of Meghan's put together. I won't call it an outfit. I do like the coat and turtleneck. (Both are sold out.) But the rest, the skirt, boots, purse... not so much. Really disappointed. Certainly don't know why she's lugging around a business-briefcase type of purse for a walk-about. I think she'll figure that one out soon enough, lol. Both she and Harry are glowing though and are reaching out to the people of Nottingham (I love saying that word with my perfect British accent, lol.) so the choice of clothes seems secondary.

Does Meghan have her own PPO yet? Hope so. Personal assistant? Hope so. She will kind of need a personal assistant to plan the wedding and keep her royal schedule, don't cha think? I wonder if Charlotte knows.

So Richard Palmer got a handshake. Good for him. He works so hard, he and his peers, and it is often a thank-less job. But not today. Congrats, Richard Palmer. :)

No offense to anyone who likes them, but I think the shoes shown on the model with the skirt are the ugliest shoes I have ever seen. (Ah, but let me tell you what I really think about them, lol.)

It still seems a little surreal seeing Meghan in an official capacity along side Harry today. Probably seems a little surreal to them also at this point. Wish it had been a sunny day.

    1. Ha! I love her purse. Each to their own I guess. I wouldn't consider it a business/briefcase style purse at all, just a normal everyday purse. Now I'm curious to know what type of purses you usually use? I'm also not a fan of the boots or the skirt.
On Twitter it was pointed out that Meghan was being shadowed by Heather Wong, who I believe is Edward Lane Fox's (Harry's personal secretary) assistant, so maybe she will become Meghan's private Secretary? Of perhaps they will hire someone new?

    2. SG, she may have been carrying an iPad around to take notes and so brought the big bag. And then realized the whole thing about flowers and cards. Would have been better if she'd brought a bigger one--l like the Coach Market Tote--and she could have slipped the cards inside that. I notice she didn't have the tote once she got inside so she probably left it wherever she left her coat.

I don't think the RF ever wear bulletproof vests.

    3. I thought the same thing about the model's shoes! I like the skirt and sweater, but not the boots with it. Those need to go with some skinny jeans. With this shirt, they end up looking heavy. Not terrible as I like the overall look but just kind of heavy.

    4. I agree about the model's shoes! 😮😯😆

    5. I liked her outfit today. It did seem a bit bulky, but I really liked the streamlined look once the coat came off. I agree with you about the bag, though. It's super cute on its own, but would definitely get in the way when greeting people and accepting gifts!

I doubt Meghan has a PPO, yet. I'm sure they're working on it, but I'd be surprised if it had happened already.

It's so lovely seeing her and Harry together at engagements at last.

    7. I didn't notice anyone there to hold her purse & hold the flowers & cards for her? It's wild to realize this is really happening & this is Day#1 of H&M in their new role as a "Couple" & Meghan's first day in Her New "Role"! It will be fun watching as the "learning curve" moves along & as Meghan "evolves" all manner of changes to adapt to her New Role! She has so many great strengths from her experiences up to now.... thats a great/ huge asset, so now she will inevitably learn what parts need to be adjusted to fit being A Royal! The Journey Begins! They are off to a Great Start & are So Cute! :) xoxo

    8. Becca. Heather Wong, one of Harry's assistant's there to help him today actually had to inadvertently step in and take over the flower/gifts transition from Meghan to wherever the flowers/gifts go. Heather was a good sport about it. All smiles. Maybe she'll become Meghan's assistant for real.
What amazed me about that was that they hadn't thought beforehand to have an assistant there for Meghan.

What a beautiful first engagement for Harry and Meghan, I’m so thrilled she has immediately joined Harry and is beginning her new role as a member of the Royal Family. She did a wonderful job, confident, smiling, interested in the causes and the holding hands with Harry was just precious. Let’s remember at this stage, she is wearing “her” clothes, with no financial support for official duties, just like Catherine did on her early appearances with William ... I loved that she choose an outfit that suited the near freezing temperatures, and then took off her coat and looked gorgeous with her Black and Tan outfit. Her hair and makeup was stunning, but it was her smile that endeared me even more to her. It is clear this is a couple, deeply in love and I wish them every happiness in their joint journey ahead. I so agree with Charlotte, they are different and have different roles to William and Catherine. They are just precious together, and Becca you are so right, they are off to a great start. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing lots and lots of them in the weeks ahead. I am so happy for them both. The joy on their faces is so precious to see. The Monarchy is in good hands. I can see why Camilla called her a “star”.

    11. Wouldn't it be interesting if she becomes a "handbag" user, like The Queen? As opposed to a Clutch user like Kate? We are all used to seeing The Queen & her handbags, but there's no reason why a younger Royal could not favor handbags!? :)

  20. Okay. So without the coat and purse... the skirt, turtleneck and boots make sense. I wear a turtleneck, long skirt and slouch boots occasionally when in cold climates but usually a straight skirt. I love Khaki and black together. That's a lot of skirt though as shown on the model. Meghan's hair looks lovely today.
So nice that she took off her coat while inside. Kinda of surprised me, lol. We are not used to seeing that.

    1. I love Khaki/camel and black together too, it reminds me of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. I loved the cost and purse together, and I liked the rest of her ensemble once I got to see it without the coat and purse, but I don't think the two looks meshed well together. I agree with you, that was a lot of skirt for her and I think she looked a touch swamped. However, I absolutely loved that she and Harry took their costs off once inside! I wonder if Meghan will continue to do that? A lot of other royals wear their coats inside (including the Queen), but I was always taught it was more polite to remove it "and stay awhile". I wonder if there is a logistical reason to keep it on? Regardless, I hope it's a trend that Meghan continues to buck.

  21. They are holding hands 💕 how cute is that?

Meghan seems very natural with people... And that's a plus for her new role. Ask myself how she must feel...all the people are there for them. Image that even for her it all is a bit surreal in the beginning.

Her outfit: Mmmhhh...she looks good but I expected something different. The outfit for me would have been perfect if the skirt was a pair of culotte. Don't like the slouchy boots with the long skirt & coat.

  24. I suppose the large handbag is because, as yet, she has no female member of staff to carry everything.
Watching on "Sky" it seemed to take a long time for anyone to take all the flowers etc.
Not too keen on the "outfit", but she hasn't really had time to put things together.
She seemed very confident with the crowd.
She had tucked he hair under her coat--I suppose to keep it under control.

    1. You made some excellent points that hadn't occured to me. She didn't have much time to prepare her outfit, and it did take a really long time for her to be able to hand off the flowers and cards. However, I really hope she continues to use these types of bags as I love them! As a busy professional woman I need something more than just a clutch (although I know many stylish women who prefer them). If it becomes cumbersome for her during walk-abouts then she can use shoulder straps like Anne does and have both hands free!

  37. I've been trying to figure out why I don't like this situation even though I am trying very hard to. There are likely more than one reason but just now as I read this two words popped into my head that may shed some light on this frustrating feeling I have about them - "too fast". Meeting each other for the first time to royal duties in 18 months?! Whew!

Too fast for them? Who knows, that's personal to each couple. But, too fast for me? Apparently! Ha

It almost cheapens the royal role. It's almost like, "wait, fall in love with a prince and now you represent Great Britain a few months later?"

I wish Harry had seen to it that the public had more chances to see them together, get to know them, then see them engaged, then married, and THEN her first public duties begin. It would've added more gravity and authenticity to the RF's roles in Great Britain. More time and more of a gradual introduction would've also benefited Meghan herself. It would lowered the chances of her becoming overwhelmed by having so much thrown at her at once and suffering the affects of that later. It also would've lessened the chances of her making a mistake that she would be embarrassed about before she even reaches the altar.

If I were Harry I would have wanted the public to have a chance to warm to her to increase the chances she is liked by the people she is getting ready to serve. An American representing Great Britain at an official engagement after having only lived in Great Britain a month? Doesn't sit well with me right now but what I think matters little and hopefully I'll get over this unsettling feeling about this whole thing. :)

    1. If she hid from the public until after the wedding, people would call her unfriendly and lazy. It seems like she can't win. She's obviously ready and willing to start working, and people obviously love her. I don't see what there is to criticize.

    2. Florida Girl, I understand the concern and have been thinking about this, too but I have several friends who met and became engaged within a year and are very happy. Also, I have always felt that Kate was not the fairy tale that Diana was to me and I think I know why. Kate was over exposed during the years leading up to her marriage. Diana was a nobody one day and then overnight, plucked from obscurity and engaged to the Prince of Wales. I know that was a different time but I still believe that a hereditary monarchy needs to have some air of a fairy tale attached to it or what is it's appeal? Harry knew he had found the one and I don't think he would want Meghan subjected to names like "Waity" just for the sake of a gradual introduction to the good people of the UK. I am cautiously optimistic and I hope that Meghan proves to be a great asset to the BRF and to the British people. She clearly is looking out for Harry and seems to put him at his ease. This shows that she knows how to partner and that is essential to a good marriage. Harry does too, it would seem. Finally, please forgive me bringing Kate and Diana into this. I am merely trying to make my point, not to compare. Go Sussexes!

    3. His parents were engaged and married in less time. Granted that did not work out in the end, but Diana was still a teenager and it never appeared that he was in love with her. Diana and Kate both started royal "duties" right after the engagement. I think for two people in their mid-30's, and 18 month relationship is an appropriate amount of time to fall in love. Meghan is almost twice the age that Diana was when she got engaged. I'm pretty sure she knows what she is getting into and what she wants. Same for Harry.

      Hope from USA

    4. I hear you, Fl girl. It will take time. It took me quite a while to develop an interest in Kate. I watched the wedding and would look at any pictures that I came across but didn't care about her one way or the other until the New Zealand/Australia tour. So, I'm not expecting to fall in love with Meghan for about three years:)

I know I'm having a specific issue with Meghan's celebrity-ness, so I'm hoping that will recede as she becomes more entrenched within the BRF. One reason I enjoy following the royal family is that they have mystique and glamour without that Hollywood element, and, you know, I like that they are British:) So, it will take some getting used to having an American, acting and speaking like an Ameeican, in their ranks.

Anyway, thought she did very well today. It was heartening to see her so well received by the British public. Not a super fan of what she wore but love the purse.

    5. I know, florida girl. As much of a romantic and optimist as I am, I find I am still vacillating between assurance and doubt. I did read an interview that ABC did with two of Meghan's former teachers at Immaculate Heart High School. One of the teachers Meghan had listed years after high school as an influential mentor. The teachers were so down to earth and properly focused. So sweet. They had sincere words of encouragement regarding Meghan's seemingly innate desire to excel so as to be of service. I will list the article for you once I find it again. I think you would enjoy it. hugs. :)

    6. With entire respect florida girl for your personal feelings, my take is that Harry did it the way he thought was best: 1) Them & their relationship first 2) make sure he introduces her to the family so they know her & she feels comfortable with them 3) Have the discussion about marriage & their plans for their future, just between them 4) check all the boxes so they can get the ok to get married 5) Engagement Announcement & Interview 5) introduce Meghan to the UK in the way that's most natural to them as a Couple..... through service & official visits..... They are on a world stage, but it is their life & they will do it the way that feels best to them & in a way that they think is best in the long run. Speaking of.... we will have many years to get to know Meghan... :)

There is something for me, too. Beyond all the romance touted and good news for Harry. What comes to my mind from life experience is simply, "engaged is not married" and somehow that makes some of this seem premature. In general, in the US it would be a liability issue, sometimes a legal issue, and maybe that is where I am stuck. She has no legal position.
It is an enormous transition from independent feminist to royal wife and I am sure she is seeing more everyday of how huge it will be. Change in marital status, religion, country, culture, dress code, ending her career and patronages, more fame that she has ever known as well as anti-royal sentiment-WoW. Just one of these would be considered an major stress event.
I wish them the best. Harry seems smitten.

They both know who they are and what they want. Why wait? But I think your point of view is a great counterbalance and should be taken into account. I’m just not sure how to do it. Perhaps after the wedding will be a great time to reset and take your approach.

    10. I can't agree. She does not represent Great Britain right now, not today. She is just trying to meet the people, to show herself to the public and make peope to meet and to like her. 12. To be clear, I don't mind/care how long they've been together as a couple before marriage. That's unique to each couple and nearly impossible to judge the impact the length of time knowing each other ever has on a marriage. I'm talking about the length of time between coming forward as a couple and being in the UK and around the british family and people to working an official Royal duty, etc.

I appreciate the different perspectives, it truly helps me and is interesting to know others' opinions. :)

Thanks for the info, surfer girl. My goal is to like Meghan and by golly, I'm going to give it my best shot!

Erika, you may have solved my issue - the "celebrityness" and my own fantasies of the British royal family being British and mysterious vs "common American celebrity" - (that was said in a joking way)! Lol. I'm American so I'm not charmed by American actresses, etc but boy I sure have been charmed by the British Princes's and Princess's and the mystique of it all!! Haha :) Maybe Meghan being American has knocked some of the glitter and fairy dust off my fantasy and that's all it is.

I still think her going on an official engagement after having lived in the country a few weeks is fast. Doesn't make it wrong or harmful, just fast for me personally.

      Delete
    13. I don’t think it was too fast at all. They are both in their mid-30’s and seem to know themselves and what they want. I don’t think everyone needs to wait several years before taking the plunge, especially at that age. I believe there would be a learning curve for everyone marrying into the royal family, no matter how long she’d been preparing. I also don’t think her being American is a bad thing. Nationality doesn’t need to be a negative thing here. It only will if people allow it to be so. I think that what’s important is her attitude toward her new role, which she clearly seems to be embracing wholeheartedly.

    14. Both Kate and Diana performed engagements before they were married. I don't know how one would expect the residents of the UK to warm to her if she didn't join Harry during some of his events? Surely hiding away and not working wouldn't win her many fans. This is an opportunity for her to a) be introduced to local communities within the UK and for them to be introduced to her, and b) learn about her new role. Getting out there and actually doing it is surely the most effective way of doing so? And sorry to burst your bubble, but that's exactly how the monarchy works. A member falls in love with someone, decides they want to marry said person, proposed/is proposed to, they officially announce their engagement and then the new member-to-be begins joining the totals on engagements. She isn't officially a member or representative yet, she is simply an apprentice so-to-speak. She IS however preparing to become a member, and I think appropriately so.

      Delete
    15. Also, IIRC Kate joined William on engagements pre-wedding not just in England, but also in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I hope we see the same from H&M so that M has the opportunity to be officially introduced to the four countries of the uk.

About Megan's outfit, it appears the new item is the below the knee culotte, in place of a short skirt or tight pants. She made a good choice, given the Queen's rules. Second, I've worked on a TV series in the US, and the way she is greeting the crowd is how women who work a TV show often greet each other - with warmth and friendliness. Her friends on the set in Toronto must really be missing her.

    1. I have been thinking too that the skirt, and the entire outfit, were a great choice for the first outfit until she gets more comfortable doing these engagements (although she is natural at them). A much longer skirt ensured no problems exiting a car and the colors of the outfit were understated. I thought it was a nice, safe choice for today.

Princess Diana, I'm sure, was smiling down on them today. I have to be honest, it does make me proud to see a fellow American stepping into such a role. She and Harry look great together -- very happy. I love that they're holding hands. I'm sure it's something they can do since Harry is further away from the throne than William? Or, perhaps it's just a further dismantling of the strict way things used to be. Either way, it's nice to see their affection for one another. And Meghan looks at ease with the crowd. If anything, she almost looks too "on," but I'm sure I'd be the same way for such an anticipated debut. It's also exciting to get to follow her fashion now. Someone on another board (which has sadly turned into mostly vitriolic rants against Meghan) posted about 30 pictures of other royals holding hands or an arm around each other, including Charles & Camilla and Will & Kate. So, IMO, it was maybe more than other royals but it's not totally unheard of. I think Harry, in general, has also already shown himself to be a pretty tactile and touchy-feely person. But, I totally agree with you that regardless of the reason, it was lovely to see, and to me, they seem really happy and in love.

    2. :) You’re right, that does seem to be more Harry’s way. I actually think it’s quite refreshing to see some love between a royal couple. I know the complaint is that it’s a professional setting, but I don’t see why they can’t hold hands. It’s natural and it can only strengthen their relationship in the long run. I also think it’s a step in the right direction for the monarchy. Less rigidity and all that. So nice to see Harry and Meghan together!

  42. 🌸 Irene Hardman, 81, from Ruddington, continued her role as a single-handed ambassador of all things Nottingham, lol. She had been there years ago to give Prince Charles Haribou candies and other local treats. She was also on hand to do the same for William years later. So it is no surprise that she was there today with packs of Haribou, local fudge, newspapers, brochures in hand for Harry and Meghan. They were delighted of course. Oh and Ms. Hardman also gave them two Huffington refrigerator magnets. Very Important, lol. She said she gave them two so they would fight over them. Smart lady. :)
References. Just about any newspaper covering the visit today. Although to a grateful and teary-eyed fan of the royal family, Ms.Hardman isn't in it for the fame, and yet Ms. Hardman found fame, once again.🍬

  44. What a wonderful first outing for them both. I love the way the interact as a couple, and the warmth that is evident. She seems a natural, and much more open than most royals. I hope she doesn't become too subdued in her upcoming role as a royal. I absolutely love what she's wearing. It's stylish, chic, and youthful. Nothing dowdy about Meghan! She's so very refreshing. I can't wait to see their relationship/marriage unfold! Thanks for such a great post.

  45. Looked like a great day for the couple. Re: clothes, the coat is beautiful and could have been chosen for warmth and/or it's ability to blend in and not stick out in a crowd. Thought her entire outfit was perfect for the occasion; casual, polished, and quietly put together. Ultimately, it let the focus be on the event and not completely on her. Well done!

Charlotte, to echo others, thank you very much for all of your time, thought, and effort - it's always a joy to read Duchess Kate and now MAM.

  46. Meghan seems to be perfectly at ease and so comfortable in this walkabout. She looks gorgeous. She has perfectly symmetric features - lucky girl !
I don't particularly care for her outfit. They are all individually very nice but they overwhelm her petite frame, I think ? She is on the shorter side, isn't she? So I think that shorter skirts that hit her knee would look more streamlined. Also more narrow cut single-breasted coats. She will probably take a look at these pictures and make quick changes as she goes along.
I am so happy that she plunged right in to doing engagements! This is exactly what she needs to do to build popularity and cement her reputation. I do hope she keeps it up and doesn't disappear for long periods of time. Isn't it funny that Kate, whom we don't see at all in her downtime, was spotted the same day as this engagement? What are the chances ! Was she going to Anmer, do we think?

    2. We do see Kate out and about from time to time, usually shopping. This is the third time she was snapped this month alone. However I think there is just increased attention on the royals right now because of the engagement announcement, so I expect an uptick in candid photos for many of them.
I don't think she was going to Amner because the kids weren't with her. Although it was confirmed by the royal reporters on Twitter that William flew to Norfolk from Finland. So who knows?

    3. I forgot to mention that I agree, I'm very glad to see Meghan hit the ground running. I think it's important to just five right in and get as much practice as quickly as possible. Hopefully this continues to be the case!

  47. Great look today! Navy maxi coat and handbag were very stylish, as were the turtleneck and skirt. The full skirt seems a bit more casual than, say, a matching pencil skirt, and the whole ensemble gives Meghan a more friendly and approachable look while still looking very stylish and well-groomed. The handbag seems a bit unmanageable, but she appears to favour totes and larger handbags, judging by various other photos. Besides, a clutch bag and short coats are now very much associated with Kate, so Meghan's wardrobe for her first appearance establishes very much a look that is her ow and not reminiscent of Kate.

      Delete
    3. The Daily Mail has offered this observation in previous articles. Must have really been a slow news day! I don’t see it, but the question becomes why comparisons are being drawn in the first place, and how is this at all relevant to Meghan and Harry’s upcomng nuptials and their future life together? There are so many more interesting and substantive aspects to this blog to focus upon and offer commentary! I don’t get the point of Zipzipzippy’s comment. I do hope that this comparison is dropped by the media and blogs going forward.

    4. Becca, I don’t think that William, Kate, Harry and Meghan need to be joined at the hip publically or in all their causes. In my opinion this “trio” to quartet- or “4some” optical doesn’t show any maturity or independence by the couples. I respect individually, and I’m sure it will be lovely to see both married couples at some public appearances. But they will be married couples! I get a sense, based upon Meghan’s history, that she is a strong woman and will support Harry in refusing to cow-tow to the “quartet” concept. Simply because Kate has demonstrated a more traditional role; doesn’t mean that Meghan has to morph into that role. No criticism of either type of role. They are different people in different positions. What matters to me is how they individually use their privilege and responsibility to the monarchy and important causes. Dedication and hard work is the core priority to me; and I enjoy reading about all the history, fashion, cultural and lifestyle focus that are also included on this blog.

  50. This is a great first outing! There must be so much to figure out. I doubt that Megan has had an opportunity to 'uber' shop. That said, her Navy coat is lovely. I'm sure we'll see it many times. I thought her turtleneck and skirt were a fitting ensemble. Not to dressy for the event but certainly chic.

By the time the wedding arrives, we'll see her style come together. This will be exciting to see. Harry and Megan are not William and Kate. Looking forward to getting to know them and celebrating their differences. I love Megan's purse and more importantly her engaging smile.

Great job Charlotte! There was a lot of content in this piece.

  52. Lovely post Charlotte! I think it seems to have been a fantastic day, and Meghan did not disappoint, she seemed lively, engaged, interested, personable, very approachable. Definitely a dynamic and impressive engagement for both of them.

Many commented that she was a "natural" - again I think that's mainly because she has a personality *naturally* suited to this kind of thing. She's also older, has had her career, scratched the itches that she wanted to in life so to speak :) so she sees this as full steam ahead into a new chapter. And she's clearly eager to get going.

It also helps that, although absolutely nothing can prepare you for what life in the royal family will be like and the attention that comes with it, she likely has a very realistic view of what to expect. She's had a taste of it while pursuing her own career, the highs, the lows, the rejections, the criticism. I think some previous royal brides had a romantic or idealised view of what their life would be like, so after an initial bout of excitement, the reality hit them a little harder.

Meghan has said repeatedly she is comfortable with who she is and not concerned with what people think. She often refers to this Georgia O'Keefe quote: "I have already settled it for myself so flattery and criticism go down the same drain and I am quite free.”

Her makeup is truly stunning - can she possibly be that talented at doing her own?! I suppose she has had it done every single day at work for the past seven years so maybe she is! Her skin is also unreal - she looks younger than me!

I think her style will continue to evolve and she'll realize what photographs well (a slim fit turtleneck) and what does not (a voluminous skirt over slouchy boots). This was such a joy to see, what a nice break from the other news coverage we're having in the US this week. The BRF at its best!

    3. I see what you did there -- she has a personality "suited" for the engagement ;)

I agree that being an actor in any capacity of fame has certainly helped prepare her for the public life and scrutiny of a royal. She does seem eager to jump into things, which makes me happy. I've been saying for awhile that I think she and Harry will be a dynamite couple, so I hope this is a good snapshot of things to come even after the wedding.

I've often wondered what it must really be like for brides marrying into the family. No matter how much one prepares, there is always adjustment, I'm sure. What a strange life it must be.

Meghan really does seem sure of herself and confident, which is great. I envy anyone who has reached a place where they truly don't care what others think!

    4. Wonderful post Claudia. I agree with you very much. She must have had to overcome a lot of difficulties and immense criticism as a working actress, especially one who toiled doing guest appearances and bit parts for awhile before her "big break" with Suits. And I also think her personality is naturally suited to her new role, and not in fact simply a result of her acting experience. After watching her interview at age 11 it's obvious that she always felt confident with herself and she was always extremely personable and eloquent, long before she first tried her hand at acting. I'm excited to see what her next engagement will be!

  54. Most of what Meghan is wearing are her own clothes. The coat is the same one she wore last year. So I think its too early to see where she is at style wise. Similar to Kate she is still wearing her pre-engagement clothing. I happen to love her style or casual, work clothing. She wears the clothing and they accentuate her easy going nature.

Harry and Meghan are a tactile, natural, power couple indeed. I look forward to more of their boots on the ground approach to learning about her new country.

  57. They looked terrific together. A positive first event, albeit a fast one. Meghan looked beautiful, I loved her coat and turtle neck, but would have preferred a pencil skirt, or trousers in a dark color. That wrinkled skirt was a miss for me, also the clunky handbag, which impeded her being able to gather the flowers and gifts being offered. Overall though a very positive day.

I’m way to excited about this visit. Haha! I loved almost everything about it.

I didn’t know today was World aids day, and I think it’s a perfect day to have this important first engagement considering Diana’s impact on HIV awareness.

It was fun to watch the videos of their walkabout. Meghan really is a natural for that Role, and I’m sure she was happy to see people so excited for them.

Personally I loved her outfit and am surprised to see people divided about it. I think it’s fun and trendy while also appropriate and professional. She seems like a beautiful person on the inside that shines through her smile and warmness.

  64. What fun! Love that they visited Nottingham as their first engagement. I thought Megan was fantastic though I noted that she carried a bag instead of a clutch (which is rumored what the Queen prefers female royals to carry on official engagements) and also that she crossed her knees instead of ankles. Surely something she'll learn in time. She is already an excellent and warm presence and an enthusiastic companion for Harry. He looks tickled pink like he's in a dream, getting to do this alongside the woman of his dreams! So very happy for him.

I honestly have had concerns about Meghan ever since I heard the first reports a year ago. BUT their engagement interview impressed me greatly--her warmth and authenticity were evident. I am very hopeful they will build a strong marriage and be a great addition and support to the monarchy and especially William and Kate. I hope so VERY much they all get along well and banish any feelings of comparison and competition. I'm a longtime Kate fan but glad to have Meghan to follow now as well!

I think she looks fantastic. I don't care for the skirt but that's just a personal preference--she looks the part and is professional and appropriate. Very excited for all the royal wedding news to come and to get to watch Harry and Meghan start a family!

I have to share this sweet quote from my husband--I called him as soon as I saw the news Monday and he said whatever day they get married he will take off work and watch the children so I can get up at 4am and watch the wedding and then sleep! He also said although we can't afford to go to England for Harry and Meghan's wedding he promises to take me for George or Charlotte's--whoever gets married first (in 25ish years probably)! I can only imagine how overwhelming the job of a royal can be and especially one who knows little to nothing of the institution. I'm a social worker and found myself so inspired and encouraged by the panel at the Obama Summit. I watched the entire video at my office desk and I can listen to the British accent for days. :) I can hope Heads Together makes it to the US. It is desperately needed here! On to Meghan's clothes, I would've worn that outfit. I think I have similar pieces (not high end!) in my own wardrobe. Love the style of the skirt but not a big fan of the khaki look in pants or skirts in the winter. Not sure why, just my reaction. I do not think either she or Catherine wear gloves. I would be tempted to with all the hand shaking and outdoor events to help keep my hands from drying out. Although William and Harry rarely wear gloves so maybe it is not an issue.

But I am uneasy about the future of these two and her adjustment to what she’s undertaking. It’s almost like she’s prepping for an acting role. 2. One lovely thing about "feelings" Senorita Dee, is that not all of them are necessarily valid. Speaking of my own, I often discover that they are little dust bunnies (or monsters) fabricated from my own limitations and fears. On scrutiny and subjected to the light they often vanish or scurry off into the dark places from whence they came.

I am not the least bit uneasy about these two. That's not to say that there won't be gaffes and criticism along the way. It started from the first (as it did with all the others who married in) and required a firm public statement from Harry. It will continue all their lives. Since the engagement it's been the petty bits about the coat/hair/no stockings--as the two of them so brilliantly call it--noise. Noise they by CHOICE ignore.

I'm especially heartened by two things Meghan said in the interview. First, that she and Harry had made a CHOICE about their relationship. The rest of it is working together to succeed with that choice and their priorities. That's how my parents approached life. They never looked at what they'd "missed" or "given up" after making a choice (as all of us repeatedly must); rather, they moved ahead focused on the pathway to new experiences and new joys. Those who wallow in what they have "sacrificed" are often narcissists who like eternal replays of a self-centered drama. I don't think that Meghan or Harry are the type.

Second, Meghan mentioned reaching the 100 episode mark of her association with "Suits." She mentioned being proud of her thespian career but also ready to move in a new direction. When that new direction includes a man like Harry who is ideally suited to her, there's little to discourage her.

She has clearly embraced her new life with Harry and what will become her new country with a "bring it on," "let's get it started" attitude. Maybe that's too American and not British enough for some, but waiting has also been criticized (even here).

In addition, between squeezing in visits to Harry every two weeks for the past 18 months, Meghan has kept up a grueling schedule on the set of "Suits." She's not the kind of woman who is going to be happy to sit around in a two bedroom cottage cooking meals, walking dogs and waiting for her man to come home. She's not waiting for marriage to get started, she is plunging in to support him--something he has longed for and spoken of wistfully more than once. He has been a very lonely and isolated boy and young man since the untimely and tragic death of his mother. Now that period is over and his deepest longings fulfilled.

Though I like Meghan's style per se, her substance impresses me most. She's a modern activist and feminist who also knows how to "stand by her man." Fortunately, it's a co-equal reciprocity.

Very pleased to see how happy they both look. Obviously they both chose to dress down for the day and to suit the weather. it would have been incongruous to see Meghan wearing a stylish outfit with a hat and jewellery for such an occasion. William and Harry have learnt to dress for the occasion whereas older members of their family still turn up in suits and ties etc. Sometimes it is important to show that clothes don't matter. Princess Anne could never cope with all this camaraderie in spite of her dedication and hard work! That is why William and Harry and their partners are a hopeful sign for the future of the monarchy.

I just read the article. Sounds like hurt feelings. There are two sides to every story. I do find it odd that this friend is so close to the ex husband "He's my family now.." what is THAT all about?! Anyway, I don't find it unusual that Meghan may have grown apart from her ex husband and the friend can't really know what went on. On the other hand, Meghan won't get out of marriage with Prince Harry unscathed if she ever chooses that path. Interesting take.

I LOVE her style and the way she carries herself. She is so poised and genuine. The outfit today was professional, approachable and in an attainable price range for a working professional woman. Also, love that she brought a purse over a clutch--I thought, I bring a purse to work!! And her hair is long, but doesn't seem to get in her face or allow her to "hide" behind it, which is really nice. I have long hair, and it's hard to have it look professional and tidy versus "free range" and school girlish. I can't wait to hear her speak more and get to know her in her new role.

    1. I agree about this being a great outfit, very approachable as you say and a bit casual to match Harry's no-tie, low key look.

Gosh, I want this purse soooo badddd!!! My pocketbook however is very happy that this particular color is on back order! :)

  82. I noticed that Strathberry said they sent Megan the purse several weeks ago....I thought the Royals were not allowed to accept gifts....wonder if she paid for the purse...or will the not taking gifts from companies rule only start when she marries.

    1. As I recall reading some time before one of William and Kate's tours is that designers and companies sent items to Kate to try and she only pays for the items she wears/uses. I imagine the unused items are returned, so maybe that's how it works for Meghan now as well. I do wonder though if the royals pay full price for items, they can't accept freebies but are they really paying the full sticker price?

  83. Thanks for the post!!! I think Harry, like William, is concerned about safety and rightly so. I am sure it is terrifying for them to throw the love of their lives into the spotlight after what it did to their mom😭😭😭.
Because of Meghan's enthusiasm to jump right in and Harry's enthusiasm to have her by his side.....Why shouldn't they do this together RIGHT NOW??? I mean how long has Harry longed for this? I am just so happy for them.

Meghan looked beautiful, though her outfit was not one of my faves. She seemed comfortable in it and that's important for a first engagement. To be honest, I want to see her dress like Rachel Zane...I loved the clothes on set and while I realize they are very "office" looks, Meghan made it look feminine and sexy. I do agree that she needs an assistant immediately. Seems completely appropriate to me. Can't wait to see their next outing!!!

  84. I'm curious, and wonder if Charlotte or any other knowledgable readers know the answer... Will Meghan change her name to Rachel in the near future? I understand this is her real first name, but she's gone by Meghan for so long and both Harry and everyone else in the world knows her as that. Does this change happen on her wedding day? Or do you think they will reject this change/tradition?

My very first comment out loud was "she's a natural". From her outfit and accessories to her interaction with people. It wouldn't surprise me if she started being called some version of "The people's princess". A complete natural all the way.

  86. First, I thank "Anonymous" or making me realize why I LOVE her clothes today---I was 20+ in the 1970s in Boston and we did indeed wear or aspire to wear these clothes. Meghan looked incredibly beautiful and friendly and knowledgeable today. I think she wanted to look attractive yet business-like and not try to grab too much attention. She really is gorgeous and they are the cutest. Also, I think Kate will be DELIGHTED to have someone else in the public eye. This is just a win-win situation for everyone. Meghan has put herself through school and learned to be able to act the way she does, and I'm sure her humanitarian background will allow her to jump right in. And I agree with an earlier comment that the white shoes shown in the ad for the skirt are so ugly---they look like blocks of cement. 1970s in Boston is the way to go. :)
