Harry and Meghan Spend Christmas at Sandringham

Prince Harry and his future bride Meghan Markle are spending their first Christmas together at Sandringham with the Royal family.

It's hard to believe it's been a mere month since Harry and Meghan's engagement announcement. Since then, the whirlwind four weeks has seen Meghan undertake her first public engagements in Nottingham with Harry by her side. The couple also attended two Royal household staff parties amidst early planning and preparations for their wedding next May. Earlier this week, we got the 'icing on the cake' to their wonderful news in the form of three beautiful engagement portraits. Meghan's been warmly welcomed into the Royal family, and they are said to be immensely fond of her. Meghan is the first royal fiancรฉe to spend Christmas with the Royals. I thought it a very wise decision as Meghan's family live in the US and she and Harry wanted to spend it together. A source told reporter Camilla Tominey she is "already considered part of the family". It's the perfect opportunity for her to get to know Harry's immediate and extended family better.

Yesterday, Meghan already got into the swing of a very royal Christmas with Christmas Eve celebrations. The royals will have enjoyed tea and chatting before decorating the Christmas tree and observing the German practice of opening gifts on Christmas Eve. The family tend to give each other funny items and homemade goods. In the evening, the family change into evening wear, with the royal ladies donning gowns, tiaras and jewels for dinner.

Meghan and Harry arrived with William and Kate - they are staying with them over the festive period at Anmer Hall. Meghan will have been there this morning as Prince George and Princess Charlotte opened their presents. The 'Fab Four' looked very happy as they made their way to Church.

Meghan looked incredibly relaxed and poised.

Lama Hasan reported "A line stretching all the way down the road in Sandringham, people tell us it is massive turnout today to see the royals especially Harry and Meghan".

Sandringham is a majestic country house on 20,000 acres of land. It has been the private home of four generations of sovereigns since 1862. It has played host to Her Majesty's festivities since the fire at Windsor Castle in 1992, and she remains there from mid-December to February each year. When the Queen or members of the Royal family are not in residence, the house is open to the public. William and Kate's new country home, Anmer Hall, which is currently undergoing renovations, is on the Sandringham Estate.

The parish church of St Mary Magdalene is of exceptional historical interest, with memorials to many members and relations of the Royal family from Queen Victoria onwards. King George VI, Princess Diana and more recently Princess Charlotte were all baptised there.

The current building dates to the 16th century and was restored by S. S. Teulon in 1855 and Arthur Blomfield in 1890. It is considered to be a noteworthy example of a carrstone building. The silver altar and reredos were presented to Queen Alexandra by the American department store owner, Rodman Wanamaker, as a tribute to Edward VII. He also presented her with the silver pulpit and a silver 17th-century Spanish processional cross. Of note also is a Florentine marble font and a Greek font dating to the 9th century.

Meghan was all smiles as they left Church. Below, Meghan with her future brother-in-law William.

Harry and Meghan wish locals a Happy Christmas.

Meghan was in her element chatting to well-wishers.

Francesa was there this morning and kindly shared her photos. I asked her what she thought of Meghan and she replied: "She took so much interest in everyone around her. She was very caring".

The Royals will now return to the house for a traditional turkey lunch followed by an afternoon filled with walks on the estate with the dogs, the Queen's Christmas speech, a drink or two and a relaxing evening of games and television. As you can see Harry and Meghan's engagement photo features among the framed family pictures. The Queen said she looks forward to welcoming new members into the family next year. You can view the annual message here. It's very happy time for the Royal family and on a personal note for Harry and Meghan, their first Christmas together shall be one they'll always look back on.

It was wonderful to see Meghan at Sandringham - the beginning of a very special tradition. These two have quite the year ahead :)

Meghan wrapped up in the Sentaler Long Wide Collar Wrap Coat in camel (a special word of thanks to the Meghan's Mirror team for their ID work this morning). Once again, we are seeing Meghan's continued love of championing Canadian fashion. The piece is described as "This long wrap coat in luxurious baby alpaca has the SENTALER signature wide collar that works in harmony with the longer length. The fit and flare vented hem keeps the femme feel of a sophisticated classic that will be worn season after season."

Today marked the first occasion Meghan wore a hat since the engagement. Milliner to the royals Philip Treacy confirmed it is one of his designs.

They are available at Nordstrom.

    7. I thought it was very significant to see him walking with the rest of the family. It was similar to saying, "I may have retired, but don't count me out!" ;-)

  9. Great seeing family togetherness and unity among the Royals. Ms Markle’s style reminds me a little of the Duchess of Cambridge. Maybe they are exchanging style notes already. Anyway, Ms Markle looked lovely as did the Duchess of Cambridge. Everyone continue to enjoy this season in which we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Thanks, Charlotte.

  10. Meghan nailed her first Christmas outfit, at least the first we will see a photo of. She looks incredible, very happy , poised and relaxed. The coat, hat and accessories ( boots and gloves ) are all spot on - different colors but all blending nicely together. Prince Harry looks extremely fashionable and happy as well. Merry Christmas, everyone!

  14. I just love the way her hand finds its way back on Harry's arm every time she's let go of it. So cute. Also love the way she's been welcomed into the family, and her engagement picture in the video from the Queen's speech.

I was appalled at Princess Michael carrying slavery imagery jewellry to the Christmas luncheon, and having read up on the woman, I really hope she continues to fade away from the public consciousness, as the inner royal family continues to grow.

  15. Good morning and Merry Christmas!

This was such a great thing to wake up to! She looks wonderful and seems to just fit in as one of the family. I’m not a huge fan of that hat - it seems a little clunky to me. Those earrings are BEAUTIFUL - I hope she continues to wear them as often as possible.

I do wonder how other members of the family (Wessex, York, Anne’s family, etc) feel about the attention on Harry & Meghan and William & Kate. I would imagine it must be a little strange to have one family (Charles) be the focus of the larger family. I know it’s what they’re used to but it’s still interesting to think about.

  16. It is wonderful to see the Fab Four looking so happy. Meghan looks happy. In matters of fashion; I like her outfit, except for the hat. Somehow for me, it doesn't quite go with the silhouette of the rest. Still the color is nice.

    2. The coat/hat remind me of Faye Dunaway but I can't remember which film. The one with Steve McQueen or Warren Beatty?

Does anyone know which clan that Tartan is associated with? if any.

THANK-YOU, Mr. Charlotte! You must be very understanding.

      Delete
    3. I second your last sentence, Harriet! VERY understanding indeed ๐Ÿ˜‡

      Delete
    4. @Harriet - Do you mean Dunaway and Beatty in Bonnie and Clyde? She's wearing a beret in a lot of the images from the movie so I'll bet that's the one. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b4/a4/11/b4a4119885d0fa2c7796851b61b9c8db.jpg

I wasn't a fan of Meghan's hat - an actual beret might have been better! That hat reminded me of a mushroom. Besides the hat, I think she looked smashing.

      Delete
    5. Harriet. Good question about the plaid. :)
It can be a very politically delicate subject, plaids, particular for someone in Kate's position. :)
Does anyone know if that was a registered plaid?

      Delete
    6. Yes. Thank You, Mr. Charlotte. :)

    7. Look up Faye Dunaway-beret and you get tons of pictures. About halfway down the page there is a smaller one with her in a light-colored, tie belt, big collared coat and a dark beret.
yes, ITK, B&C also. That was what I thought first.
In the first pictures I saw I thought Meghan was wearing a beret. I didn't notice the trim at first. I think it takes a broader facial structure to carry off that type of hat. She needs something that extends it, not closes it in--if that makes sense. I think she might do well in a picture hat. With the line away from her face not toward it. I think she has worn a fedora well.
Now I'm trying to remember the name of the Steve McQueen film where she is an insurance fraud investigator. One of my favorite movies, even if I can't remember the title. The wardrobe she wore in that film was exquisite and I think it would suit Meghan.

    9. YES! Thank-you. There is a newer version with Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan which is great, too. The mind games and seductive undercurrent are there. I think the later version relied more on visual, techie things while the original was more cerebral-except that chess scene is the sexiest thing I've seen and both characters remained fully clothed and barely touched.

    1. I have to say I don't think knee high boots work on her. Her calves are just so tiny, the boots aren't held up and just slouch. I don't think they're supposed to be slouchy boots! I noticed this at her first engagement with the black boots as well.

      Delete
    2. I agree. I'm sure there is a custom fix for that, and she should take advantage of it. Nice to see them all looks so happy.

      Delete
    3. @Penny and Greybird - I also agree. Maybe choosing a stiffer boot material (harder leather instead of suede) might help as well. It seems like it would be so costly to have boots altered, so maybe just buy custom boots in that case? I wonder how much something like that would cost.

I'm curious to see how her fashion evolves (or not) as she takes on more engagements and family outings. Although I mostly just care about seeing her out there representing! I hope she'll work so much and be so involved that her fashion will be secondary :)

      Delete
    4. p.s. to my previous note about boots - ankle boots would look great on her and she wouldn't have the slouching issue. I'd love to see her re-wear these: http://www.meghansfashion.com/burberry-hazelhurst-115-navy-suede-ankle-boots.html

      or these: http://www.meghansfashion.com/sarah-flint-sophia-booties.html

And, I'd love to see her in trousers for engagements too. I hate how Kate is only skirts or jeggings. Nothing wrong with trousers or a pant suit and I hope Meghan chooses this option sometimes.

      Delete
    5. I agree with your suggestion of boots - love those Sarah Flint boots. I too am on the fence about the hat. My first thought was "mistake" but it sort of grows on you the more it's seen. I still think a raspberry color hat would have been fun. I do love your idea of trousers or a pants suit since it's such a part of our wardrobes these days and in breezy weather there would be no worries of skirts blowing up and showing things that shouldn't be seen!

      Delete
  18. I play a little game with myself guessing about what Meghan will wear. This is my first win! :) I thought she would wear either a plaid (which Kate wore) or an unusual camel/opal gray coat. I just love the coat, and the purse is really interesting. I don't like the hat on her because it holds down all that wonderful hair, but she had no choice and a it's winter and cold she couldn't wear a tiny fluttery hat. I thought Kate looks over-the-top happy, and noticed she and Will are holding hands. I think she is really enjoying Meghan. She has waited and watched for years to see who her sister-in-law would be and is no doubt very grateful at the outcome. Even the princesses looked kinda happy.

I was reading a few posts on the body language of MM and Harry and the "experts" agreed that Harry was getting his much-needed affection. One person comments that when MM holds his arm, Harry leans toward her, which is a sign of taking her support.

Also read about her beagle's broken legs, but hopefully he is still on the mend. And there was a comment that the other dog, Bogart, had been acquired jointly by MM and her boyfriend chef---and I thought perhaps Bogart is with Cory. (I think that's his name)

  19. I'm not loving Meghan's hat and I'm surprised she chose this Sentaler coat, it being so similar to the sweater Kate wore in Canada last year. (Or perhaps she wore it for that reason, so that her sartorial choices today won't attract too much attention). She does look gorgeous of course and so very happy. I cannot even imagine the excitement and joy she must be feeling right now!

  20. I can't help but wonder how Harry and William feel now that the women in their lives are or almost are the same age as their mother was when she died. It must really hit home to them how young and vibrant Diana was, and how much more living she had to do, and how much more time they could have had with her.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Meghan is now exactly the same age as Diana was when she passed away, 36 years old.

      Delete
    2. I sometimes have this thought too... I'm 36...its Kate's age and even Meghan's. Diana died so young...

Who knows if William sometimes is anxious about loosing Kate and what that would mean for his children. It must be so traumatic loosing your mother at such a young age.

      Delete
    3. WOW!! I had not thought about that, but they are about the same age as Diana was. It is great to see William and Harry so happy.

Megan looks nice but I wish her coat was shorter, especially with her tall boots, I don’t like her hat, I like the colour and swirl, but it looks huge now that I see it straight on! Very thick too? Kate looks nice too but I’m not loving her coat, I think it’s the pattern even though I did like her other tartan coat! I love her hat and it looks almost identical to her grey one last year! 24. Charlotte, thank you for this post. What a wonderful Christmas present! Your dedication is awesome, and I love all of the rich background and history that gives context and frames this blog beautifully. I’m still trying to decide if I like Meghan’s beret. But I’m not a fan of hats in general. It will be interesting to see how Meghan influences Harry’s fashion and style. Both he and William need a stylist in my opinion. I’ve read that Tash has been involved in William’s wardrobe choices- I don’t think I’m impressed or noticed an improvement. Merry Christmas and I’m looking forward to the New Year!

  31. I didn't like the hat at first but now seeing the boots, purse, gloves and coat I LOVE the whole outfit. ❤️
I love, love, love the purse and boots enough to have priced them. I would have the coat belt done with a perfect buckle so as not to have to tie it like that. Even though I am 5'91/2" and thin (my family says skinny, lol), tied belts create bulk and don't work on everyone, including me. But it looks fine tied on Meghan. She wears tied belts often. I think we are going to see some great style from her. yay
I do not think that the hat is too big on her at all. That is the design of the hat. She looked so cute (and warm). ❤️ I LOVE Kate's outfit too. ❤️ She looked warm also and very festive. ๐ŸŽ„
It is such a JOY to see outfits that are put together right. :) Although Kate's yellow earrings, while they are pretty, didn't go with her outfit. I think she was trying perhaps to match the gold buttons. She has worn yellow earrings before that didn't seem to make sense with the outfit though. She needs white diamond earrings in that drop style she loves so much with excellent diamonds. That then could be her go to neutral instead of the yellow earrings. (hint hint William.)
Love that Meghan wore the same earrings as before. Cost per wear and all that, lol. Those earrings are classic with a contemporary flair and very sparkly. beautiful. :)
Maybe Meghan will inspire Kate to have fun with fashion again (YAY) and that will allow Natasha to get back full time to her original duties. :)
Loved that the Four all walked beside each other and not Harry and Meghan walking behind William and Kate. ❤️ Karen Anvil's photo is amazing. ❤️
What a special day for Harry. ❤️ His true love with his family now and attending the church where his mother was baptized. ❤️

Everyone looked so cold though. brrrr. I kept wanting to pass out warm toboggans to all the men, lol, especially to Prince Phillip. :) Wouldn't he have loved that? No. lol

Charlotte, Thank You ❤️ again for your diligence and many talents. The information on the church was so nice. And I love the Christmas card. How do they do that? lol

As usual, I so enjoyed reading all you all's comments this year and getting to know you more. ❤️

    1. Yes, Karen's shot is amazing. I thought it was a professional one when it first popped on twitter. But then everyone was joking that none of the press got a great shot but a random person in the crowd did and that's the shot that is dominating. I think it's a terrific shot and really symbolizes the future leaders.

I think Meghan and Harry's open and easy affection allows W/K to be more affectionate. If W/K were the only ones, it was a weird break in tradition, but if Meghan and Harry do it's well, it's more the norm for the next generation.

  32. I like Meghan's coat, but not anything else about the outfit. All the neutral is a bit much for me, I would have liked to see a touch of holiday color added, and the boots are too slouchy. It's one of my least favorite outfits I've seen her in actually. I imagine the pressure on a day like today is very challenging, and she looks happy.

  33. You have to see this adorable video over at the DM!
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5211553/Nervous-Meghan-ease-Harry-curtsying.html
Meghan coming out of the church at 0:52, then everybody seems to kind of talking to her, she´s trying to take everything in, look into the cameras at the same time, keep her face nice and smiley, commenting and answering to what the others tell her, trying to take in everything that goes on around her (including NOT missing the moment when you have to curtsey to HM) - poor thing, she was really "under pressure"!! It really gives you an insight into just how willing she is to learn as much as she can and adapt as quickly as possible...
The picture beneath the video kind of says it all....her expression...priceless! I would so much like to give her a big hug in that moment and say: "Don´t worry, Meghan!! You´re doing fine!!"

  34. I think Meghan did well for her first Sandringham Christmas. While there could be improvements in her look, I like that she chose to be understated after those engagement photos. I am a bit disappointed in the lack of crowd interaction. It's not at all like previous years. I don't think they spent very much time with the crowds. Too bad.

  35. I was so looking forward to this day to see what Meghan wore but have been very underwhelmed by her choice. I really do not like anything. I feel overall that the clothes wore her not the other way around. Her hat, coat and boots just looked too big on her and dwarfed her frame. The hat seemed disconnected to the rest of the ensemble. Disappointing.

    1. @surfer girl - that was so amazing, wasn't it?! It took me a minute to find their photo, but...yesssss, it's there. So exciting!! It is so interesting to me though that most (all?) of the photos are just ones that are publicly available. You'd think the queen would have private photos that the family would give her, even if they might later be made public during her Christmas address. Sometimes this family just seems absurdly private/secretive!

But anyway, I'm being grinchy about that. Overall, I completely agree with you that it was lovely to see Harry and Meghan's photo and hear her welcoming the new members who will join the family in the new year. Maybe even this time next year, there will be an additional family member on the way for Harry and Meghan. Or twins...yep, I'm holding out for twins for the Ginger Prince and his Duchess.

      Delete
    2. lol. IntheKitchen. Twins run in Kate's family (paternal grandmother Valerie and her sister Mary), but do twins run in Harry or Meghan's family? Don't think so. But hey, the twin genomes have to start somewhere. :) Let's hope for twins for Harry and Meghan. Meghan is 36.
Give them a jump on the game. :)

  38. I really like Meghan's outfit, except the purse. I don't really like the shape or the color; I much prefer the one she used in Nottingham.

I don't know why people are not liking the hat. Some are saying it looks like an emoji of some sort, but I don't see it. For her first time wearing a hat, I thought she chose well, and its not too matchy-matchy with the rest of her outfit and accessories.

Charlotte, thank you for both these splendid blogs! They are thoroughly researched and beautifully put together, but most importantly they are a space for lovely and positive discussion.

I thought both Meghan and Kate looked beautiful today. Meghan looked very chic and happy. I loved the comment about her "American air" in the video. I do think she has a confidence that's appreciated! It's such a treat to see both women looking so well and imagine all the wonderful work they can do, separately and together, in the future. I so look forward to seeing the Fab 4!

  41. For me the most exciting aspects of the day were 1)seeing Meghan figuring out the hat dilemma which is so foreign to an American and 2) seeing the first public curtsy. Also a strange habit to take up. I wonder if she was missing sunny California today??

  44. Loved MM's outfit, she does justice to the wraparound coat style and I like her choice of hat but most of all the bag...*want* LOL. Everyone looks relaxed and happy; it is catching ♥
An excellent post, thanks and Merry Christmas from out west in Canada.

  45. I really like MM's outfit, but don't love it. I don't mind the hat, except it does dwarf her somewhat. Mind you, I don't know what other hat I would wear with this outfit. It reminds me of the Whiteley 434/318 hat Kate wore to the Epsom Derby shortly after her wedding. The scale of that hat, worn with hair up, was very nice. I wonder if MM will be wearing her hair more styled in future? It's not her typical - I've only seen a couple of pictures with her hair up.
I appreciate her wearing a brand from Canada - her home of several years - but am not a fan of Sentaler. I've tried their coats on, because the ribbed styling is interesting, but didn't buy because the material is quite stiff and it doesn't want to drape at all. It's like a stiff boiled wool.
I have the Stuart Weitzman lowlands in brown, she's wearing the highlands. The color, quality and material is beautiful.
The Chloe bag is gorgeous. I went to theRealReal to see if any were available but the 2 on the site were sold. Crumbs.
Her and Harry look very natural together - at points he appeared to support her, but there were moments of vice versa. I like that she took her glove off when going to the crowd. She's a natural!

    1. I think that both Kate and Meghan looked great. I think that Meghan choose the neutral colours she chose because she did not want to "stand out"... I also saw that moment when she removed her glove to shake the hand of the lady- a classy move. Her apparent timidness made her more endearing...

      Delete
    2. lawmom, 03:55. THAT was huge. I would have kept my warm glove on wouldn't you have? (please say yes, lol) but Meghan instinctively wanted a real hand shake. Score a kazillion points there.

      Delete
    3. It is a matter of good manners to remove your glove when shaking a hand - at least in Europe.

      Delete
    4. @lawmom - I love that handbag too! I can't see spending so much on a handbag since I don't use them that often (and 1500 is just a lot of money!) but I do drool over that bag. Every time I see a picture of it I'm like, "hmmm, maybe I could just splurge, just this once??" :D I may however, buy a Strathberry bag when I'm in Scotland next year!

      Delete
    5. inthekitchen - meghansmirror had an excellent alternative, priced around $35 if I remember; alas, it is sold out. imke - understood about removing gloves in Europe. I think it's less common in the West. I've recently-ish moved to Toronto where Meghan spent the last 7 (or so) years. Perhaps because it can get so bloody cold, shaking hands with gloves on isn't uncommon.

      Delete
    6. Removing your glove to shake hands was the proper thing to do 'way back when'. Oh dear, am I showing my age?! :D I too loved the handbag and. . . dare I say, covet the Strathmore bag she used in Nottingham! Unfortunately waaaaay out of my price range. :(

  49. I don't see my post from earlier. I wanted to add that I think it was smart of Megan to go with a 'camel hair style' coat. Very classic. She appears to like wrap coats but I'm guessing that'll change. It's tricky for them to look good in photos.

I love her purse - so chic IMHO - and the "nutmeg" accessories (her hat, boots and purse) keeps it all together nicely. Some don't like her hat but I think it's a good choice for her. She obviously was comfortable with it on her - given she chose it - and she can probably take it off when she's back inside and it won't have messed up her hair. A beret is different and doesn't mimic anyone else's hat.

Good job Megan! Each new experience must have it's challenges and I support you!

  50. Meghan looks already very at ease interacting with her future in-laws. It was wonderful to see the Queen welcome her in the Christmas speech. I am wondering if the news articles about Jessica Mulroney still advising Meghan on her wardrobe are credible (NY Post early this month). Lately, Meghan’s coat choices has reminded me a lot of Sophie Trudeau, who was aided by Jessica as her stylist at one time. I don’t really care for Jessica Mulroney’s style. I hope Meghan will develop a style as a royal that Is true to herself as she becomes more established as a member of the BRF. Looking forward to seeing how she evolves in her new role.

    1. 00:27. I think she might be involved to some extent for the long haul as I doubt Meghan will diminish her relationship with Jessica in any way. I also do not like Jessica's style in general either (oh shades of Natasha Archer, oh no, lol) although she does have her moments. But Meghan needs consistency and her own sartorial signature. :) I hope Meghan can successfully incorporate the two somehow. :)

    3. I am not a hat person so I will never speak out too much on them. One thing I really like about the design of Meghan's hat is that the upswirl on her right balances out the long low hair to the left.

      Delete
    4. Beanie. :) I really liked Meghan's hat. Not at first but when I saw the whole outfit. I think we are used to seeing the typical beret style hats like the one Kate wore to Ascot with her cream Ralph Lauren outfit. But this hat is a design of it's own. I really like it now. :)

  53. I think Meghan did well today. She seemed a little hesitant but I think that is to be expected with this big of a weekend as a newbie. The overall feel of the outfit it great-warm, cozy, neutral, but polished and pulled together. But I feel like this coat just overwhelms her. I think it is the combination of the wide collar/lapels and the length. I actually like the hat and appreciate the fact that she was intentional about not just wearing any old hat, but got s proper English-made hat. And the purse is adorable. Quirky but not outlandish.

But I think I might be the only one who was slightly annoyed by how much Meghan hung onto Harry. A good linking of hands through arms is cute and endearing but I felt like she almost hung on him, almost pulling him down. I think they were both cold without gloves but still.

    1. I had the same thought, Katie C.H. It is slightly annoying that she constantly clings to him. I suppose she is afraid to do something wrong and he is a sort of security blanket for her. That is certainly understandable. Meghan is poised and confident and I am sure that this will stop when she becomes more comfortable in what is expected of her. Good for William and Harry for guiding her with a few comforting words of driection.

      Delete
    2. I tend to agree on this type of PDA.

      Delete
    3. No, you are not alone in your assessment. In fact, Meghan's constantly clinging onto Harry bothers me to no end. I've been watching videos of her interviews and the speech she delivered at the UN. She comes across as strong, confident, and intelligent. To see her clutching Harry's arm contradicts everything about her. I hope this behavior ceases immediately. This is not the Meghan who stood up to her bosses on Suits regarding the gratuitous nature of her character's scenes. I'm hoping this is just an issue of nerves and not the real Meghan.

      Delete
    4. You guys. Another perspective on that clinging??

According to some "body experts", that clinging is very territorial (staking your claim and protecting it so to speak). THAT, to me, fits more with what we can see of Meghan from her speeches, interviews, and things she has said in print, yeh?
Doesn't that make better sense given what she's said and shown us previously? I do not think ANYTHING about life Royale intimidates Meghan. ANYTHING. Just my opinion. :)

      Delete
    5. except she looked like she was drowning and Harry was her life-preserver. The two-handed grip falls more in insecure clingy than in "Hands off! He's mine!" territory.
If it were me, I'd have him on a tether.

      Delete
    6. Regardless if the clinging/arm clutching is due to nerves or being territorial, I agree with a lot of the other commenters that it is now past the cute stage and even if she isn't needy, that's how she appears.

The color palette of the outfit and championing Canadian brands is nice but not very holiday inspiring and I agree with Becca H below in that I don't like the slouchy boots. Booties or brown/sienna tights and suede shoes like Catherine's would have been perfect! I did like her hat although I know that seems to be a yes or no depending on the person responding here.

2018 will be a very exciting year!

  54. I love her color palette. The hat, coat, and bag are gorgeous. I don’t like the slouchy boots much, especially with that length of coat. She seems to be relaxed for the most part. There must be some nerves, though, which is partially probably why she grabs for Harry’s arm. I certainly would!

I think she looks lovely! The specifics of the hat, coat, purse, boots, are all personal style and choice as to whether someone does or doesn’t like it. But she’s dressed perfectly appropriate for this occasion in neutral colors so she doesn’t look like she’s asking for attention. I think she nailed it fashion-wise for that reason.

I especially love how clearly the whole family shows their acceptance and love for Meghan. It sends a clear message.

For those who know about these things, I noticed she bowed her head when she curtsied but Kate didn’t. Is one way more correct or just personal preference?

Also, I saw photos online of Beatrice, Andrew, Charles and Camilla all in more casual attire walking to an earlier service in addition to this one. Did they walk to the church, then back, then back to the church for this service? That seems weird. Or is the earlier service somewhere else? I couldn’t find any info online.

The earlier service would have been a communion service and the normal morning service at the same church comes a couple of hours later. The Queen normally goes to both. Regarding wearing gloves for shaking hands, the Queen always used to wear gloves when doing this. Has she changed her practice?

  59. I think what Meghan is wearing is absolutely lovely, however what I’m realising from this picture is that clearly Kate has everything she wears adjusted or tailored to fit like a glove (or maybe is just meticulous about choosing things that do). Meghan’s boots are too baggy for her calves, her coat is bunched around the middle and the hat is slightly too large! I don’t want this to appear as a criticism because it’s not, the clothes are fabulous. It’s more an observation that even if Kate is celebrated for buying off the shelf, she clearly must have every piece adjusted to fit her perfectly!

    1. Mrs. D, I think the difference is that Meghan is wearing a coat *as a coat*, while royals tend to wear them as an outfit. It's perfectly understandable at this stage, but I do hope she chooses more tailored looks that will flatter her figure (which she has).

      Delete
    2. I agree... Do love the neutral colors only because that is what I am drawn to.
But I thought she looked like see was going out to lunch. The bag ...though lovely..

    3. I really like that Meghan's boots and hat match and her bag and gloves, being more red, match. In this situation, I think MM needed to hang on to Harry, especially as they were in a row with Will and Kate (who were holding hands!). What if she got a few steps behind or ahead? Very brave girl! They deserve a warm vacation now.

      Delete
    4. @Mrs D - It's so funny, but I actually think Kate's clothing (dresses, coats, jeggings) never fit her properly. IMO, her pants/jeggings are usually way too tight for BRF role, and her coats or bespoke dresses are usually tailored terribly. We've seen coats with buttons moved but the old button location still showing in the fabric, or bespoke dresses with the hems and waists shortened and then they often look "off" IMO. For me, Kate's tartan coat doesn't fit her properly because the buttons are pulling. I don't know if it's because it's not a maternity coat, but it seems too small, to me.

As RoyalFan said, Meghan is wearing her coat actually as a coat (as did Bea and Eug and Autumn) and I don't mind this because it means she'll take it off when she goes inside - like she did at Nottingham. I think it's incredibly rude when Kate leaves her coat on throughout an engagement! But, I'm getting too off-track here so I'll stop.

      Delete
    5. IntheKitchen. Speaking of fit. I would assume that those black tights are maternity tights. They would absolutely have to be or it would not be safe for baby. Too restrictive and tight, particularly when Kate is seated at all or for any length of time, yeh?

  62. ali. Regarding Meghan's outfit. That color combo, the suede, wool, felt, and bridle-type purse all are very "to the manor born", town and country type of style, yeh?

  63. I don’t see my previous comment so I may have forgot to hit send. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! Waking up to these photos always makes for a good holiday.

I don’t want to be too critical but I do want to comment. I have mentioned I’m not a fan of high boots with long skirts/dresses/coats so the boots were a miss for me as was the hat. It seemed very clunky to me which was a theme as I didn’t like Kate’s hat either. I do like the color, it works well with her dark hair. I also really love that she carries real bags and not always a clutch, it’s more relatable to my life for me. I carry a clutch to weddings and sometimes funerals - other than that, I usually have a handbag. I also like the gloves and think they work well with the coat.

I absolutely love those earrings and I hope she wears them as often as possible. I can’t wait for their first 4 way engagement. I definitely think that William & Kate probably gave them use of Anmer Hall in the beginning of their relationship which is why we never saw them spending time together in London. The press would have a distraction with W&K moving to London full time and wouldn’t even pay attention to Anmer. With as close as W&K&H are, It wouldn’t be too far reaching, in my opinion.

It is so wonderful to see Harry so happy! I think Meghan is going to be an excellent addition to the royal family. I do have to wonder how the other families feel with attention turning almost solely to the Waleses and away from the larger family (Yorks, Wessexes, and Princess Royal’s families). I did notice that the photos included in the Queen’s address were of Prince Charles and his family only. It is definitely a slimming of the Royal Family and I’m interested to see how they continue to evolve and change. It’s setting up to be an interesting 2018.

  65. Allison. Meghan nervous about her first Christmas Day appearance with her new family??? NEVAH. lol

She was just being polite in taking all that instruction.
Soon after her famous curtsy, Meghan very cheekily stuck out her tongue ๐Ÿ˜› at the bystanders and waved and laughed heartily about that as she and Harry walked by the Christmas crowd. For real. Harry had his head turned at the time or he most likely would have joined in. ๐Ÿ˜›๐Ÿ˜› Yep. lol Seems she and Harry have this thing about sticking out their tongues at the public. So for anyone who thinks that Meghan was shaking in her nutmeg suede boots about their Christmas morning. Think again.

    1. I just saw that today! :) As I thought that MM must be very good at taking direction being an actress, so it was a little comical seeing Kate, Will, and Harry directing her about the curtsy. I read a body language expert's report that she is giving Harry support when she hangs on to him. Who knows what it means? Maybe he's worried that she'll bolt when she gets a taste of the real life and she's reassuring him that things are fine. I remember reading comments about his look when they attended the wedding a long time ago---people said he looked bored with her. I think he was unhappy over the photos if he knew they were taken or over other issues---and she was reassuring him, not hanging on.

    2. There is NO WAY she was sticking her tongue out. Pictures capture odd moments. Looks like to me she was in the middle of licking her lips. I don’t think my comment posted the other day, so I’ll re-post.

I think any negative comments about Meghan’s hat, coat, boots, etc are more a matter of personal taste, which is fine because we all have things we like or dislike. But at the end of the day, I think she nailed it. She’s modest, appropriate, and not flashy. She knew all eyes would be on her, so she picked a color palate that would not only flatter her but also be as neutral as possible. I actually thought she was dressed better than some of the “pros”. Sophie looked absolutely lovely, but her outfit didn’t seem appropriate for the weather at all. Beatrice wore a weird loose coat that was distractingly unflattering (she definitely has a unique personal style). Honestly, if we weren’t so focused on her individually, I don’t even think we’d really notice her fashion (if you look at Autumn Phillips, she was dressed quite lovely but didn’t receive any press or comments about her look). So I think this look was a win. Others have commented about the boots being loose around the ankles, and I noticed that as well. I wonder if it’s possible to tailor boots for someone with skinny ankles like her.

I loved her purse! Definitely something I would love to own, but certainly out of my price range.

My only quibble is her need to link arms with Harry at all times. At first it was cute, but it came across as a bit needy this time. He certainly didn’t mind though! I think they’re pretty cute together, and you can tell he’s quite happy.

I wonder when their next official engagement will be?

    ReplyDelete
  69. I loved Prince Harry's recent interviews, first with P Obama, then with P Charles. So many people emphasized this before me, but it really seems that Harry is willing to show more of himself, I think how they handled their engagement business says it all. And I applaud that, also I got the feeling Harry has a closer and warmer relationship with his father. Finally.

  70. The Daily Mail has a photo of Meghan sticking out her tongue at someone in the crowd and giving a big smile afterward. I have to admit I got a chuckle out of that, and do wonder what prompted it - maybe she saw someone licking a big lollipop! Love her outfit, except for the boots, and love the way she and Prince Harry look at one another. I hope they have many years of happiness together!

  71. Hi everyone! Hope all who celebrate had a lovely Christmas. Just now getting a chance to check out what Meghan wore and for the most part, I like it a lot. I do wish her boots weren't so slouchy and that the coat were a tad shorter and less bulky but, otherwise, I think she put together a stylish and eyecatching look. The purse is especially nice and unlike most, I do like this hat. The twist on the side is fantastic and I think the design suits her face and hairstyle well. The whole look was something different but not out of place. Usually, I'm not a fan of browns but this did not look drab in any way.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I am not a fan of sticking ones tongue out but I have no idea if that was what she was doing or not. With regards to the arm holding, I thought she was a bit over the top in the engagement interview but I thought her arm holding was very natural and relaxed looking on Christmas Day. I and no issues with it. One thing that has occurred to me is that based on their relative sizes she and Harry may find her holding his arm much more comfortable than holding hands.

    1. ali, there is a photo of Harry with his tongue on view and at least one of William with a strange pursed-lip sort of smirk. I am very glad no one takes micro-expression photos of me.

It is possible that Meghan was able to call on her acting skills when on stage giving speeches to the UN or on stage, so to speak, in television interviews. It was a familiar milieu for her. However, for the Sandringham church appearance, though there were cameras present, there was no script. The audience was Harry's family--the British Royal Family. I believe the royals, as most public persons, develop a persona for the public that differs from their private self. It is easy to see with William-the difference when he is playing the royal role as learned at his Granny's knee and when he is just being William- Dad, Husband, and occasionally old school chum. Eventually, Meghan will develop that protective role as well. I don't think her grasp on Harry indicated any sort of proprietary air. It is a new role for her on an unfamiliar stage. Just think of Harry as playing a supporting role. :)
While it is true Kate was not given much slack by the tabloids during her dating and engagement years, Meghan's situation is vastly different. It must be a difficult time for her Mom, too. But still a lot of joy to smooth the way.
