Meghan Marks a New Tradition at the Queen's Pre-Christmas Luncheon

Meghan Markle marked a momentous milestone (try saying that ten times) in her new royal life today as she and Prince Harry arrived at Buckingham Palace for the Queen's annual Pre-Christmas luncheon.

Ahead of the luncheon, a royal source told reporter Camilla Tominey Meghan would be in attendance as "she's already considered part of the family". Today's luncheon offered the perfect opportunity for Meghan to meet extended members of the family before the wedding and, of course, reacquaint herself with the Queen's corgis. During the engagement interview, Harry revealed they had taken quite a shine to her.

Her Majesty hosts the fifty-strong luncheon every year for the entire extended family, many of whom are spending Christmas with their own children and grandchildren rather than joining the annual gathering at Sandringham. It is one of very few occasions where so many members of the Royal Family are assembled together. The royals usually stay for a couple of hours before departing. It is said The Queen takes attendance at the luncheon very seriously and family members rarely miss the event.

Harry and Meghan left KP almost immediately after William and Kate who brought their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte to the lunch.

Another view of Meghan arriving. In every photo I've seen, she looks incredibly relaxed.

Meghan will undoubtedly enjoy seeing Buckingham Palace in all its splendor for the festivities. Although, she has already become well acquainted with the Palace. She has enjoyed tea with Her Majesty there and was spotted arriving with Harry shortly after the engagement. It heralds a new era for Meghan as she begins her royal life. The newly engaged couple will travel to Norfolk in the coming days where they will enjoy a traditional royal Christmas.

A seasonally appropriate welcome awaited guests in the form of a 15ft Nordmann Fir Tree from Windsor Great Park.

The perfect finishing touch to a Royal Christmas tree :)

There's a wonderful video showcasing the process of decorating the Palace shown below.

It is a beautiful time of year at the Palace. Earlier this week, the Coldstream Guards Band played a selection of Christmas carols during Changing of the Guard.

A quick video of Harry and Meghan leaving from royal reporter Richard Palmer.

The pair were seen smiling and chatting as they left. It looks like they had a wonderful time.

Meghan looked elegant as she arrived at the Palace today.

The amazing HeavenQRF identified Meghan's pretty dress as the Self Portrait Nightshade Midi Dress. The £300 dress is crafted from a combination of specially designed guipure lace and solid crepe skirt. The short sleeved bodice is fitted to the waist with a grosgrain waistband in contrast to the full silhouette of the tucked A-line skirt. The neckline is finished with a solid black collar stand. The bodice is lined with a nude bandeau for coverage and the dress is fastened with an exposed zip in the back. It has been sold out for some time.

We can see the detail of the dress slightly in this photo.

A reader kindly shared a photo of Suki Waterhouse wearing the same piece. Emma notes Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands. also wore the dress for a wedding earlier this year. You can view photos here.

Meghan has been a fan of the hugely popular brand for years. Below, we see her wearing their Teardrop Lace Dress at the Glamour and L'Oreal Paris Celebrate 2016 College Women Of The Year event last year.

The Meghan's Mirror team believe Meghan's new earrings are the $6,000 Maison Birks Snowflake Large Round Jacket Earrings - a very seasonal choice by one of Canada's leading jewellers.

If searching for an alternative to Meghan's earrings, the talented Meghan's Fashion found the $21 Over Ear Jackets and the $36 Front and Back Discs at Bling Jewellery.

How did the luncheon go? The Mail Online reports it was a charming afternoon with Meghan pulling a cracker with Prince Charles.

Meghan Markle passed her first major test as a member of the Royal Family yesterday – by pulling a cracker with future father-in-law, Prince Charles, donning a paper hat and reading out a corny joke.
Prince Harry’s fiancé was a guest at the Queen’s annual Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace, where she was introduced to almost every member of the monarch’s extended family. According to an insider, she appeared slightly nervous initially but soon began to dazzle, with relatives queuing up to meet the prince’s glamorous bride-to-be for the first time.
Fortunately for the US-born actress – who will no doubt attend her inaugural state banquet next year - these lunches are designed to be fun, not formal. ‘Everyone wanted to meet Meghan and welcome her to the family and she didn’t disappoint,’ they told the Mail. She was obviously a bit nervous at first but she soon relaxed with Prince Harry’s help as he introduced her to everyone and then she really enjoyed it.
‘Harry was clearly very happy and very proud of her and everyone thought she was delightful. It was your typical Christmas lunch in spite of who was there – turkey, crackers…the lot. ’

It was lovely to see Meghan at the luncheon. We'll see the couple on Christmas morning at Sandringham next :)

  1. Lovely to see Meghan going to the luncheon. I'm glad HM is rolling with the times.

And a big thank you to you for leaving the mince pies out of this post. :)

Claudia is shocked that mince pies are not on my favorite Christmas food list! And, Anett, if I come to Vienna, I will eat your mince pies. Even though they aren't my favorite. :)

    5. Haha. I have never been crazy about mince pies! The dowager makes them every year, as well as jam tarts and lemon tarts. I always go for he lemon ones. She really makes great lemon tarts!

I'm making a yule log cake for Christmas dinner, and we'll have a Christmas pudding with brandy white sauce. Which makes no sense that I like Christmas pudding and not mince pies, but such is the contradictory world of bluhare!

    3. Meghan will be getting Jewelry from all over the world no doubt. These most likely were a gift is my guess. Meghan would be careful, I think, not to go buying expensive bling, etc. even though she is wealthy in her own right. I just don't think she would be that unthinking. I really like those earrings though and even though they are snowflake design she can wear them to many royal occasions in the future regardless of season. I really like those earrings. :) Maybe they were an early Christmas present from a certain ginger.❤️

Would love to have a regular arrival photo so we could see the dress full length and her shoes and purse. All dressed up and only a drive-by photo. Que lastima.

    Both beautiful women.

Perhaps some of us could share a funny story about meeting the family while we engaged? I'll start. During my first trip to Colorado to meet (my then) fiancé's extended family, I walked into the bedroom and found his grandmother going through my suitcase. She looked up and said, "I just wanted to see what you had in here." It was shocking at the time but I grew to love her very much

    4. That's a great idea. My in laws live in the mountains of NC. Their driveway is a mile long & wraps around the mountain. When Paul first took me and we kept driving and driving further into the woods. I finally turned and asked "There is a house at the end of this drive right? I've seen this movie before & it doesn't end well."

But yes, there was a house, an amazing log cabin. I have grown to love both his family who was very welcoming & their house.

    5. Those stories are so funny, lol. Oh my. Those are stunners. Thanks for sharing. 😂

What a sweet idea to share memories like that.

I remember one Christmas I was pregnant and my due date was the beginning of January. We were at my in-laws by the Christmas tree. Someone knocked over a candle and the hot wax went all over my black velvet flats. I tried to bend over to take care of it and almost fell belly-first into the Christmas tree. Someone steadied me and then kindly sat me down and tried to get the wax off my shoes. (I couldn't reach my feet at that time.) That's all I've got. :)

  10. Is it just me, or did Harry seem to have an extra twinkle in his eye when leaving KP! He must be so pleased to be attending these things with Meghan.

However... arrival at BP looked a little iffy, the cameras must have been immense, I'd love to see a shot of the media there. That can be quite dangerous if some photogs are shooting head on into the windscreen, they seemed to be blinding Harry a bit. I suspect another warning will come after this, and fair enough. Though (most) cars are going relatively slowly through the gates, so not as dangerous as out on the roads of course.

Thank you Charlotte for all your hard work, and I hope everyone celebrating has a lovely Christmas, whether you're in Buckingham Palace or not ;) Relax and enjoy the holiday!

    1. I think Harry must be so pleased that he is not gonna attend any family events alone any more. I think he had enough of being the third wheel. It showed on his face many times!

I agree on the flash too, it must be disturbing for them to drive like that.

      Delete
    2. Claudia, when I saw that photo of Harry wincing because of the flash another photo immediately came to mind. I won't go into it any further than that. I doubt that that similar instance was lost on Harry. Again. Another reason proper photo ops should be given.

    3. I am not sure proper photo ops would change anything for this event. But who knows.

    4. @Claudia, re: Harry's expression - Richard Palmer said on twitter that there were tons of pigeons in the way of Harry as he was driving, so perhaps he was nervous about hitting a bird? (I was going to go on and make a hunting joke about the Boxing Day shoot and Harry killing birds :| ...but I won't.)

      Delete
    5. I imagine photogs walking backwards in front of your car might make a person nervous as well. A pigeon can fly up and get away. A pap--not so much. A pigeon did not take that picture.

    6. There were two or three pigeons. I counted them.

  11. We don't have a full length view of the dress on Meghan of course, but it seems to me that big skirt would overwhelm her petite frame. I do love many of the Self-Portrait dresses, mostly the Sweetheart Crochet Pleated Midi Dress. However, some of them cross the line from sexy to trashy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. She is supposedly 5'7" so I don't think she is actually "petite." Definitely much shorter than Harry, but she's actually considered tall, for a woman.

I don't really care for nude linings on dresses/skirts and not a big fan of lace, but I like the overall silhouette of the dress and the midi/tea length.

      Delete
    2. "Petite" can refer to a person's build, not necessarily only their height. A person who is small boned, or slight, as Meghan is, can be described as petite.

      Delete
    3. As a short woman (5'1"), I prefer petite to be reserved for shorties like myself. BUT I looked it up in the dictionary and I have to give it to you Pam that "slight build" was also in the definition so there you go! But I'll still pretend it only refers to those of us under 5'3". You have to give us something!!!

      Delete
    4. That is me. I am slight, long limbs but small ankles and wrists etc. Small boned. But not short.

      Delete
  12. Yay! I woke up for work today thinking about how we'd get some photographs of this lol! Harry must be thrilled to have Meghan with him. She does look incredibly relaxed. I wonder if she is, or if she's secretly feeling the nerves? I know I'd be.

  13. Oh goodie more Birks jewels!! Love Birks and remember one special birthday when my dad (albeit reluctantly) bought me a small ruby ring there. It was clusters of small rubies, like the clusters in these earrings but cost nowhere near thousands of dollars. Think it was $100 which Dad rather gasped at. Sadly it was stolen from my gym locker a few years later.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm glad someone mentioned Birks! Here in Canada, when I was growing up, Birks was always the "traditional", old-school jewellery store--lots of dark woodwork, beautiful gems twinkling in the showcases, and fantastic silver and crystal on display. My grandma's engagement ring was purchased at Birks. (She kept the beautiful silver box it came in and it was treasure her grandchildren always admired.) When a special occasion would come up, I can recall my grandpa saying, "Let's see what Mr. Birks might have." Years later, my engagement ring came from Birks, too, and I have my own keepsake silver Birks box. Needless to say, it has been fun for me to see that Megan (or someone who cares about her) might have said, "Let's see what Mr. Birks might have."

  14. She looks beautiful and the dress is gorgeous. One thought is that she is very over dressed for the luncheon with that dress. It looks much more like a cocktail or elegant evening out dress. Love the earrings.

    1. Ali, I had the same first impression, but under the circumstances I can understand Meghan choosing to be a little overdressed rather than wishing she had stepped it up.

  15. I LOVE her earrings! I imagine the dress is beautiful on Meghan too. I think the experience she is living is why girls dream of being a princess - what fun it must be to go from the normal first half of her life to becoming a part of the BRF! Wandering palace corridors, meeting all of these people that most of us will only ever read about, and of course -- the clothes/shoes/jewelry!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Beautiful earrings! They would have come from someone with an eye for trends as the jacket design isn't necessarily a 'classic.' Or is it, and someone can correct me? Just looks a bit too modern for Charles to have cooked up the idea. Or even the Cambridges, for that matter. There aren't too many trend followers in the immediate family.

I love her for not wearing a coat even though it was probably freezing and she probably cranked the heat in the car to the point that Harry was swearing in his blazer. Meghan threw us a bone on the ID! The dress is perfect; a bit more risque than the normal dress, with that flesh colored underlay and the see-through lace, but still conservative overall. She is so freaking pretty too.

    1. I also don’t consider the jacket style to be “classic” and I often find them awkward looking. But THIS pair I absolutely adore. Just gorgeous. I also doubt they were gifted from anyone in the BRF.

  19. Is she really 5'6 or 5'7? If so, that is not petite. It is actually considered tall. I am that height and have always been considered tall. She looks to me to be 5'1 or 5'2. Does anyone know for sure?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Her wiki page says she's 5'7" - definitely not petite. There's no way she's only 5'1" or 2" because of her height in comparison to Harry, who is listed as being 6'1". She's not as tall as him, but she's also not a whole foot shorter than him.

I'd guess that those height listings are actually pretty accurate because I'm 5'6" and my husband is 6' and the difference in our heights looks about the same as Meghan and Harry. Especially at the Invictus tennis match where she was wearing flats (and I am a total flats woman).

      Delete
    2. I am also 5’6” and while no one has ever described me as tall I most *definitely* have never been considered petite.

She is listed at 5’7” online, which I totally buy (and since she’s an actress I think it’s safe to say this is accurate). I think Harry is a few inches over 6’ right?

      Delete
    3. Her frame looks petite. But she is also very thin and has long legs. Regardless she is blessed with a build that wears clothes well and photographs well. Also a very striking face. She also has figured out what works to her advantage with hair, make up and clothing.

      Delete
    4. This is something I always wonder coz she doesn’t look 5’7” to me !

    1. She really does, doesn't she?! Her hair is sooooooo glossy! Drool. And her skin, glowing. I think love does that to a person :) And, confidence. I really just see her as being a calm, grounded, comfortable-in-own-skin person. I think that's one of the things Harry probably loves most about her after he talked about feeling so un-tethered for so many years.

Both she and Harry look really happy and it's so incredibly nice to see Harry in his own car this year. One of the first steps in his journey of building his own family unit. Yay!

  21. The flash making Harry have that expression. Another reason for them to give proper photo ops.
And, proper photo ops would give the history books a cameo into the appearance of the "minor" royals. A special annual page in history better illustrated.

  25. I LOVE that she is wearing Canadian (Birks) jewellery! Birks is our equivalent to Canada. 1. I thought it a very clever choice. It looks like a skirt and blouse which gives it a casual vibe. The nude underlay with the high neck and long skirt makes it sexy but in a demure way. Its glamour is perfect for Buck House. I'll wager chowing down on somebody's hat that will probably return at least once in the multiple changes at Sandringham (which would make it look as if she is not trying too hard).

    1. Yes, I do. I feel like this dress would have been more appropriate at the Christmas weekend in Sandringham. I would have worn this as a formal gown with my hair up. You know something, it does not matter what Meghan (or Harry) would have done in these pictures there was bound to be criticism. So if I am going to be criticized you bet it I will do it in a fabulous dress that I and my soon-to-be new family can afford.

In as much as many commentators would have appreciated an outfit that is "reflective of the society of the U.K." the truth of the matter is the BRF is not a reflection of that. They have money, they have position and they have status. They have jewelry, estates, art collections that are far from reach from the everyday person. And that is a fact. Just because they have learned over time to appear frugal in the eyes of the public (that is why Harry looks like he owns only 2 pairs of shoes and 4 items of clothing) may help some
sleep better at night but it is patronizing.

As Harry said in the engagement interview, "people think they know" but the truth is we will never know the circumstances under which Meghan came to put on that dress. So it is useless to get upset over a dress that quite frankly this family can afford.

p.s. If you want to be upset about something, ask me. Being from Uganda and having left a job that was in part funded by British tax payers money I can give you insights that will make the price of Meghan's dress so insignificant

  42. Annette; couldn’t agree with you more on the observations of Harry being a third wheel. Sometimes it was almost cringeworthy to watch and I felt for Harry. Many times he looked like the reluctant little brother following his brother and sister to events.
