Meghan Discusses Empowering Women: "There is No Better Time to Shine a Light on Women"

Meghan joined Prince Harry and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the first annual Royal Foundation Forum in the Auditorium at the offices of Aviva, London.

It marks the first time the foursome carried out an official engagement together.

The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry was legally established by the Princes in September 2009 and became fully operational in 2011. The Duchess of Cambridge officially became a patron in 2011; it is their main vehicle to pursue their charitable and philanthropic interests. At present, the core priorities are mental health, young people the armed forces and conservation.

It's incredibly exciting to see Meghan present today. In May, she will become the fourth patron of the Foundation and will add her own interests and charities. Meghan's previous philanthropic work included women's advocacy, gender-equality, clean water initiatives children, poverty and health.

In a statement the Foundation praised Meghan's "drive and commitment":

"We are delighted to welcome Meghan to the Foundation. She has always shown great drive and compassion for making a difference in the world, and we are excited to embark on important projects together. Together we use the passion and unique influence of our Patrons to change mindsets and make a lasting difference on the issues that matter to them and to society. We never begin a project thinking we have the answer. From day one, the Foundation was built with an open door, and whatever we do, we invite the best and brightest to sit with us around the table to help find solutions. We don’t just help raise awareness about issues, but aim to truly change attitudes and make a lasting difference to communities in the U.K. and abroad."

Meghan has already had the opportunity to see two of its projects in action. For her first engagement in Nottingham, Meghan learned about the Full Effect programme Prince Harry established in 2013. The programme supports children and young people in an effort to prevent their involvement in youth violence and crime through a combination of early intervention, mentorship, and training. Earlier this month, she joined Harry for the Endeavour Fund Awards, which offers seed funding for sporting and adventure challenges, and helps emerging initiatives with advice, hands-on support and mentoring. Meghan privately joined Harry on the judging panel of the Endeavour Fund to consider submissions.

Speaking ahead of the event chief executive Lorraine Heggessey told Sky News it's significant that the four of them have chosen to promote their joint charity work together.

She said: "What's important to all three of their royal highnesses at the moment and Ms Meghan Markle is that this generation of the royal family is seen to work together collectively to make a difference and make a significant impact on the issues that matter both to them as individuals and matter to them collectively and to society.
"I think for Ms Markle she just naturally had synergy and you know understood that idea, it resonated with her and we're now researching, very early stages areas of interest and themes that might develop for her in the future".

The theme of the day, 'Making a Difference Together', focuses on showcasing successful programmes run by the Foundation including the successful mental health campaign Heads Together and Prince Harry's inspiring Invictus Games.

William, Kate, Harry and Meghan appeared on stage to discuss the Foundation in the presence of an audience made up of invited guests, supporters of the Royal Foundation, and programme partners and beneficiaries. You can watch a full video including an hour of the forum below.

Prince William opened by welcoming Meghan: "Catherine, Harry and I are delighted to be here this morning and we're particularly happy it is our first Royal Foundation event with Meghan." Kate smiled and turned to Meghan before giving her a round of applause.

Host Tina Daheley asked Meghan about her impression of the Royal Foundation so far. "Obviously it's incredibly exciting and yes I think for me it's been a very long time working on cause driven works specifically with women and girls rights. To see the model of the foundation is really interesting. While I've worked with larger NGOs, I've also worked with small grass roots organisations where you can see a higher level of impact in my opinion because there's a lot less red tape. What you see here and what I noticed with Heads Together from a global perspective was the power of convening all of these smaller organisations who have the same issues but need this extra push and support under this umbrella. You're able to achieve that and the impact they all made with Heads Together was tremendous. I'm very excited to work on initiatives similarly that can have that same sort of impact globally".

Speaking about her work supporting women Meghan said:

'For me it's very important, once you hit the ground running, even if you're doing it quietly behind the scenes, which is what I've focused my energy on thus far is meeting with the right people, meeting with the right organisations behind-the-scenes quietly, learning as much as I can so we I can maximise the opportunity we have and really make an impact. I think what's really interesting when I hear people speak about girls empowerment is finding and knowing their worth.
You'll often hear people say 'Well you're helping women find their voices' and I fundamentally disagree with that because women don't need to find a voice. They have a voice. They need to feel empowered to use it and people need to be encouraged to listen. I think right now in the climate we're seeing with so many campaigns; MeToo and Times Up, there is no better time than to really continue to shine a light on women feeling empowered and women really helping to support them in that. Men included. It makes such a tremendous difference.

Meghan added: "I guess we wait a couple of months and then we can hit the ground running but up until then I'm pretty excited". Meghan said she couldn't reveal more on the work she's been doing yet. "Sadly I can't. Harry and I see the world so similarly in our approach, being very hands on with things. What I can say is I've been so fortunate to meet with incredible women and organisations in the UK, but also knowing some of the work I've done in the past has been in Commonwealth countries like India and Rwanda, so this reach can have some really nice legs to it once we get started."

A couple of lighter moments from the Mail Online:

'The young Royals showed their softer side at the foundation forum today when joking about the challenges of working together as a family. After being asked by presenter Tina Daheley if the 'ever have disagreements' William immediately burst into laughter before responding with a drawn out 'Ohhhh yes'. Harry was quick to clarify they were 'healthy disagreements' and joked they 'come so thick and fast' when asked what the last thing they quarrelled on was.
William continued the banter, quipping: 'Is it resolved? We don't know!' But Harry steered the topic back towards the serious message, adding: 'I think it's really good we have got four different personalities and we all have that same passion to make a difference. 'We have different opinions and they work really well [together]. Working as family does have its challenges; of course it does. [I think] the fact that everybody is laughing shows they know 'exactly' what's it like. But we are stuck together for the rest of our lives. Meghan added: 'Togetherness at it's finest'
Presenter Tina Daheley said the impact had been huge and 'changed the national conversation around mental health' before asking them if they expected such a result.
William quickly said 'No, as an answer' before Harry quipped: 'It was organised on the back of a fag packet. It really was. But William quickly brought the subject back to a serious nature, adding the Duchess of Cambridge was key to its development. He said: 'Catherine was the one who joined the dots up and came up with the idea and the concept. Harry and I had never thought about doing a campaign before and when it comes to mental health it was very difficult to know where to start. 'It's such a big issue and it is so entrenched in society in a negative way, sadly.

The royals watched several videos on initiatives.

Harry said he is proud Meghan is joining the effort.

Meghan met guests.

Journalist Bryony Gordan shared a hug with Meghan. During Heads Together, Harry spoke candidly to Bryony about the effect losing his mother had on his life.

Meghan looked effortlessly stylish in the Belted Satin Wrap Dress by Jason Wu. The sleek belt secures the wrapped waist of the trench-inspired dress sewn from an elegantly draped crepe-back satin.

More from the product description:

'After his Resort '18 show at the Fulton Market Building in Manhattan, Jason Wu confirmed that he is infusing his hyper-feminine designs with a new, casual sensibility. Modeled on the day, this sleeveless wrap dress is tailored from fluid navy satin and belted for definition - although you can also wear it unfastened over trousers.'

The dress is available in several sizes at Net-A-Porter and Nordstrom for £1,415 (with thanks to Meghan's Fashion).

Meghan teamed the dress with the Aquazzura Casablanca multi-strap suede pumps (with thanks to Perth Fashion). Crafted in Italy with a slender point toe and mid-high stiletto heel, and punctuated with a multi-strand ankle strap that secures with an oversized buckle.

Meghan accessorised with the £65 Isabel Marant Enameled gold-tone hoop earrings (with thanks to Meghan's Mirror).

And her Birks stackable ring.

The Duchess wore a blue Seraphine dress; to read more about Kate's appearance, pop over to Duchess Kate.

It was excellent to see Meghan present today. She's obviously learned so much in the three short months since the engagement. As previously reported, she's been very busy working behind the scenes. Royal reproter Emily Andrews aptly summed up Meghan's appearance: "Passionate, self-possessed and clearly loving her new role. Very self-composed and articulate, she name-checked #metoo & #timesup. Clearly a woman very much in control and wanting to make a difference." Her words on supporting women and the Commonwealth are very likely signs of exciting things to come.Watch this space...

  8. Argh I think my original post is gone. 😖 So first, thanks for getting this up so quickly with a link to the video! Yay! I know I can always come here and you’ll have us all covered 🤩

I was very impressed by all four of them (except for Kate’s breathy affectation when she speaks which bugs me), especially having no notes. I thought they were all very poised and articulate about their areas of interest and think they should do more panel type discussions. I actually thought Kate sounded more relaxed and articulate then when she reads a speech so for her especially I think she should do more unscripted events.

It was wonderful to see Meghan up there with the crew and can’t wait until it’s official so we can hear the details of all the behind the scenes work she’s been doing. It sounds like her focus will be on womenand this I was very pleased to hear her mention time’s up and metoo.

I thought she looked wonderful as well - her dress and shoes were lovely. I like how the dress was an appropriate length for royal requirements but also wasn’t boring. Nice asymmetrical style and some visual interest without being too flashy. Looked very professional and modern. My only complaint about her look was the curtain of hair which obscured her face when she was turning to look at the moderator, and that she had to keep brushing it off her face or neck. I think she (and Kate as well) need to start pulling their hair off their faces for work events. A lovely hair clip to pull part of it back, a loose side pony, a half up half down style...anything(!!) but the constant falling in the face would be great, IMO. Overall though Meghan looked super. Can’t wait for the wedding so we can see all of the areas where she’s going to dig in!!

    1. She’s wearing black again while Kate is wearing blue again (and again). I know fashion isn’t the highlight, but Diana proved that integrating exciting fashion with charitable causes garners more attention for the cause, and that’s a win-win.

  10. Meghan’s comment about the news on Heads Together while she was in Canada was a good input, as an observer , a member of different and distant place, looking in. Harry had said at Obama Summit how much the military had formed a part of who he is. The three of them are college graduates. I continue to find Harry as articulate and broad minded as some college graduates in general, even more with passion. He has an easy going and humorous personality. Meghan looks like a 20 something beautiful bride- to- be, before a very first wedding. Chances are she will plan her wedding image as a first marriage. They all looked empowered as a team. They are very fortunate to take The Foundation to a high level and be families at the same time. In the Harry’s humor, “We are stuck Together”.

Yes! Meghan in blue. She looked fantastic in every way.

  11. Fab Four did FAB and I appreciate that the put their heads and means together for such good causes and sure more to come. While it seems that other commentors like Meghan's outfit today I find it somehow 1) out of place while the freezing snowy beasts is covering the UK 2) too overwhelming and too busy in general together with her hair down.

  12. Something I forgot, Meghan mentioned “Time is up” movement. That might have been another reason she frequented black during the height of many Hollywood women symbolized their images in black clothes.

Another is, I was reminded of an interview Harry and William gave to NBC around 2007. Harry said, “He is the brain” about William. Most likely, it dealt with the college graduate thing. PH is equally competent with William in that aspect.

  13. What a wonderful engagement. It was great to hear them speak more candidly about their work and hear more about what goes on behind the scenes beyond just showing up at an engagement. Meghan in particular was so self-assured and well-spoken (as well as so confident and chic looking), I can't help but think this is truly the role she was born for. She really shines.

  14. The most important thing here are not their clothes, it’s the fact that the very first Royal Foundation Forum is happening.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The Foundation is a work in progress. Clothes do have purpose at times even beyond image. People discuss clothes casually for fun as well as purpose.

For example, in today’s Meghan style, I sensed a subtle message to her share of the conversation. Between the designer of her dress, and the sleeveless style, I was reminded of another famous lady whose drive for education came up with the message, “let girls learn”, “free our girls” for Nigerian girls in captivity by a terrorist organization, and so on. In fact, it also refreshed the latest news in my mind that the young Nigerian girls Boko Haram kept captive were released recently.

The fashion industry can also be a contributor to philanthropy which makes them the potential members of succeeding "Together". Clothing also makes statements about history of a time period, people and culture.

    2. Sadly it seems a lot of royal watchers and saddly almost all the royal reporters only care about what the female royals are wearing. I hope Meghan forces them to look beyond that.

      Delete
    3. Can we all please just agree this is a “life and style” blog and that it is perfectly reasonable that we the readers write about Meghan’s (same as Kate’s) clothes, hair, etc., in addition to the obvious substantive nature of these wonderful ladies’ charitable work?! It is NOT fair to pass judgement on OUR capacity to appreciate the meaningful work these four are doing. Please stop. This goes to Eugenie, USA granny and whoever needs to lighten up a bit.

    4. The Forum was a great idea. It gave the young Royals an opportunity to show to others what’s been accomplished, and to focus towards the future. Ms Markle did not disappoint; she was articulate, confident and did not shy away from her passion to empower women and young girls. Good for her. If you lose YOURSELF in this business, what else is there that really, really matters?

      Delete
    5. We maybe over thinking the dress and weather aspects of Ms Markle. Remember, she lived in Toronto before relocating to the UK. She knows how to dress for cold weather; including big coat, wool hat and boots. I’ve seen the pictures. There are no pictures of her arrival. I’m sure she was dressed appropriately for the inclement weather; she’s a smart girl. I enjoyed all four young Royals today, and respect their individual fashion choices. Just because I would not choose a dress or a pair of shoes, etc doesn’t make a person’s individual choice, a wrong choice. I’m so glad on this blog, we understand that an opinion is just that, “an opinion”. Thanks, Charlotte. I enjoyed this post just as well as the post for the Duchess of Cambridge. Excellent work on both.

  15. I LOVE what she's wearing today! Love it! FINALLY! lol She kept to her style, but looked polished and put together. This is how you do "messy chic".

  17. Yay, I am so excited that she is planning on continuing her advocacy for woman and girls empowerment through the royal foundation. My favorite part was when she said that woman and girls have voices and they just need to be empowered to use them.

  18. I love Meghan's navy blue dress. The femininity of it suits her. Working women in the States wear dark colors more than not, so I would expect her to keep this palette as she begins her Royal life. She's going to make a difference, she's going to be a help to Harry. All good news.

  19. I do so admire Meghan! Im sure the Royal family is proud of this moment today. Love the dress and shoes. My only complaint is her “California” hair. Too casually styled in my opinion. And Im from Calif. I just think that hair has a place and it doesnt fit with her new role.

    1. Please explain to me how after listening to her articulate so beautifully her excitement in the work of the Royal Foundation we are still discussing Meghan's hair. Kate's hair has been the single most inconsistent thing about her. Her style, color and length change from month to month. It doesn't matter. They are who they are.
      Leave it alone.

      Delete
    2. USA Granny, these blogs are where readers come to discuss both fashion and the work of the royal family. Those who don't want to discuss fashion aren't required to, but others are allowed to comment on it.

      Delete
    3. Amen USA Granny! There is absolutely nothing wrong with Meghan's hair. Race really plays an issue in the comments about her hair. As you noted, Kate's hair is really inconsistent, but she is white, so her hair, to most people is fine regardless. But with Meghan being biracial, I feel like people have to make an issue out of hair. She's fabulous. Enough said. Leave it and her alone!

      Delete
    4. Nothing to do with race. Thanks for bringing it up again.

      Delete
    5. Can anyone explain to me in which way the hair of the two women are styled differently?! Both wear it loose and in waves. What makes it fine with Kate and to becritisised with MEghan? I simply do NOT understand.

      Delete
    6. Regarding comments about Meghan's hair, I don't think we should use a broad brush assuming any hair comments involve race. Kate has been butchered over the years about her hair, too long, too short, questioning if it's all real, needs updo or 1/2 up, or plays with it & nervously tucks it behind her ear. I think everything that's been said about Meghan's hair (minus the messy bun:) has been said at some point about Kate's hair.

      Delete
    7. Kate's hair has been criticised in each and all post of DKB. In her face, not professional, mumsy updo, those curls, that length, a ponytail would have been better, should have a real hairdresser...And that no matter how important the event was. It is only to be expected Meghan's hair will get the same scrutiny.

      Delete
    8. So finally the justification is since Kate was criticized for her hair, its only fair to do the same to Meghan? Really!!!

      Delete
    9. Anonymous at 23:46 -well at least the people who are waving the racist flag have no legs to stand on.

      Delete
    10. Anon 23:46 I don't think anyone is justifying Meghan being criticized about her hair. In fact I don't believe either of them should be criticized!!! However, life & commenting being what it is, I believe the attempt was to assure those concerned, that Meghan wasn't being singled out due to race, as Kate has endured such abuse for over a decade! :(

      Delete
    11. I think the original observation by azgirlcoyote was just that-an observation about Meghan's hair being long and loose and maybe not the most fitting to this situation. And yes, people have long commented on Kate's hair. And just because you comment on one does not mean that you can 'attack' the other. But both women have the habit of wearing their hair down and then fussing with it. I watched a 2 minute clip and they both fuss with their hair. And in my opinion(though this is no fault of theirs) their hair should have been pulled back because of the angle of the camera. When they are looking at the moderator, both women's hair partially obscures their faces.

And honestly for me, I wondered more about how many times Meghan could tuck and untuck her hair while answering a question about getting involved to the point I'm not really sure what she said. So really, since I was distracted by it and not hearing her words, it is relevant to the post.

      Delete
    12. No justification just explaining that those comments are not linked to racism (at least at this site). I don’t get the problem with criticism that a lot of people have. You can like someone but be very critical of their hairstyle, fashion, work ethic and so on. Meghan is not reading here nor is anyone writing her letters with tips on how to do her hair. We talk about our perception of her engagements cause wise and style wise.
I don’t care about her hair but I do think her mentioning timesup and metoo wasn’t the best idea. She could have condemned sexual harassment and violence and additionally supporting female empowerment without using those specific movements.

  20. I'm sure it's just the news coverage we receive in the States but for years it's been seeing the royals attend openings, gala's, garden parties, etc. They were always looked upon as the public relations section of the UK, and while Princess Diana was featured it was more about her beautiful clothes than charity work. Wonderful to see the younger royals working on such worthwhile endeavors together. Pleasantly surprised to see Meghan in a dress and while dark at least it wasn't black. I do wish she'd add a little color into her wardrobe and do something about that hair - either trim it or pull it back a bit. Thank you Charlotte for including the video.

    1. I have to agree with Helena. I'm the same age as Diana & all I remembered at the time, was the focus on her Style = Clothing & Hairstyles. Until she sat with & shook an aids patient's hand, I don't remember her charity work ever coming ahead of Style until that moment. After that their was a tepid knowledge of her as a humanitarian (because back then charity work was seen as just what The BRF did as their routine, like cutting ribbons etc.) There wasn't the big interest in Charity Work as there is today. It's my remembrance that the attention to Charity Work came after Diana's death! Real time it was fashion over work, after her death the Charitable World was elevated to a much higher significance. Diana's name then became synonymous with Charitable Works & Posthumously the interest in Diana's Style became second to her Charitable Works & her Accessibility as a Royal! Just my 2 cents.

      Delete
    2. I guess maybe coverage was a bit different here in the UK then. I agree that for the first four years or so of her marriage, the media focused very much on Diana's clothes and her style of parenting. However, in 1985 we had the AIDS handshake and Live Aid and I think from that year on the coverage was very much more mixed - clothes, parenting and charity work. There were masses of images and articles showing Diana with AIDS patients, in leprosy wards, with young cancer sufferers, helping at Mother Teresa's mission in Calcutta, visiting homeless people and serving at food stations in Africa and parts of the Indian subcontinent long before her tragic and untimely death - it is why people loved her so much and why there was such an outpouring of grief when she passed away. It was clear for a long time before she died that she wasn't just going through the motions because it was her job - she genuinely cared about people in distress. I do think, though, that she threw caution to the wind a lot more after her relationship with Prince Charles started to break down (coincidentally in about 1985). If there were victims to be helped or supported, she got stuck in and just did it - regardless of the protocol! I am utterly convinced that Diana would have worn black to the BAFTAs and I suspect Meghan would have done the same. I think that's what Harry means when he says that Meghan and his mother would be thick as thieves - I see the same determination to help in Meghan as I saw in Diana. Do I think it could cause ripples among the 'men in grey'as Diana used to call them? Yes. Do I think it should stop her from doing what is right? Absolutely not!

  21. Very happy to see this and very well staged to highlight the important work being done. I was a bit struck by the many smiley happy pictures of both Meghan and the Duchess- and the serious looks on the Princes' faces. Odd that... do women have something "to prove" or some character role they are supposed to play into that even here is still subtly being played out with these two ladies? ( mayeb its the selected shots- I caught a bit of the video and they obviously had their serious moments.
Megan is a bit " american" obviously- a bit more animated- giggles a bit more- a bit more talking with her hands than the more reserved crew- but to be expected. She may adjust or - she may not. ( I"m an American here in the UK and so I know the differences quite well! and sometimes get called on them, too!)
The one thing that I will say- (and today is NOT about sartorial efforts here!)- expcet to say- it's bloody freeezing and snowing here today. Beow zero- and as such- I'm not overtly fond of the sleeveless look with Meghan- or the no hosiery thing. One of her fab La Perla turtleneck underneath would have been far more appropriate... It just sets a titch oddly- and a titch "too Hollywood" imho...)
These guys have the possiblity of really doing some wonderful work- and I really really look forward esp to Meghan's interjections in this in due course. I think as others get busier with other things- she's smart and motivated and could be a real " force" with the Foundation. Exciting stuff- using their considerable position to make a difference. a "win win" in my book!

    1. No one in the Royal Family talks more with her hands then Kate! Her hands are spent expressing her
thoughts/words or adjusting her hair. Both habits are a trademark of her personality. Its who she is.
      Its absolutely fine.

    2. Oliver, I think 2 things.
      1) Watching the video live, I didn't find both women being any different that Will & Harry. In fact the guys were the ones cracking jokes. I think some of the popular pics being shown are Kate & Meghan cracking up at their humor. I also believe that those pics would make good copy to show that Kate & Meghan having fun together, rather then them both looking stale or contemplative. I love the pics of both ladies watching the films.
      2) I also agree with USA Granny. My first thought reading your thoughts, was that Kate does talk with her hands a lot & has received a bunch of grief about it over the years. I remember it's been expressed that people thought she started her whole "clutch stance" to help her to avoid doing just that. She seems to have struck a nice balance now & seems more comfortable. I can't remember seeing the "clutch stance" in a while, even pre pregnancy?

    3. thank you , ladies! You clearly pay more attention than I do...Happy to stand corrected... I rarely watch footage beyond the Duchess giving the odd speech... so I'm not really aware she's a hand talker... And yes, I did like that crack between the Princes about their disagreements. very amusing...above all- I'm thrilled with their work which is the most important thing. ( and agree good PR between the 4 of them will pay off handsomely in many ways)

    5. I liked Meghan’s dress except it seemed strange to have a sleeveless dress in the middle of winter, even with a coat for outside. Other than that, I liked it all. It made me feel cold, just looking at her.

  23. One aspect of listening to Meghan today, it doesn't sound as if she'll be compromised on her views. I suppose the difference between W&K and H&M, is H&M have a little more freedom, whereupon W&K will become the monarchs, as such, are a little more restrained in airing their views. I hope that Meghan will continue with her work, with empowering women in her royal role. As for today, I thought she looked lovely and oozed both confidence and charisma.

    1. Annabel, I was struck by the same thought. It wouldn't be much of a surprise, I guess, if there wasn't an adjustment time. What has played & worked for her in the past chapter of her charitable life, might not work in this new chapter of her life. There may be some bumps as a natural part of her learning curve. However, it can't be overstated that her passion, knowledge & experience in the charitable sector will be such an asset for The foundation! Not to mention any works that She & Harry take on together!

  24. I've been so looking forward to this event!! Meghan is glowing and looks gorgeous in midnight blue. I'm glad she departed from the heavy draped clothes she's been wearing in favor of this chic dress. She looks effortlessly fashionable here, although I'd be freezing if I were her! I don't mind her hair being down at all.

I can't wait to see the impact Meghan has when she officially joins the foundation. It's such a good idea and could really make a difference, what with the four different world views, opinions, and ideas they each bring to the table. I'm especially looking forward to Meghan's work with women's/girl's rights, particularly in the present climate of #metoo and #timesup. It's important work, a worthy cause, and I think Meghan is the perfect candidate to champion it. Her previous experience proves she's serious and passionate about the work.

  25. I love the dress but not for this occasion. I would air on the side of being professional and modest at events like this. It’s not the place for a royal to show off their arms. The shoes are far too evening and a bit too sexy for a business atmosphere. The look is beautiful just not for this. If this was a garden party with different shoes, great.

    1. There is nothing immodest about arms. For heaven's sake, this isn't the Victorian age and thank god for that. The criticism about Meghan is just unreal and so disheartening.

    2. I agree with Lindsay that there's a time and a place for uncovered arms, and a snowy day in February isn't it. (Them?) It's a gorgeous dress, but completely unsuitable, IMO.

    4. I definitely meant it as constructive criticism, if at all. I love Meghan's style and as an American, it's exciting. I just think there is a time and place for her style and given the structure of the Royal Family, I stand beyond my opinion. I've been a royal watcher for a long time now.

Thank you, Anon 19:57 and 20:08. I actually was nervous about posting what I did. I think I remember Queen Victoria and primarily Prince Albert emphasizing in there day, leaving a mystique to the royal family. There is something to be said for this. I think being too familiar is not a good thing.

Showing a woman's arms is not a bad thing. I just meant in a professional setting, I wouldn't say it would be the best choice at the end of February, in the winter. That dress is beautiful. Like I said, i would have loved it with a summery shoe at a garden party. It actually reminds me of the same type of setting in which Kate wore her yellow sun dress just after the wedding.

Optics are everything for the royals and I don't want her to be misunderstood. I'm coming form a place of concern, not malice.

    5. Sometimes, I'm really astonished at some of the comments. She should bare her arms and the shoes are too sexy?, Wow, what year are we in? As a woman who is Kate and Meghan's age, I found both styles appealing in their own way. I'm glad they are dressing like the professional, modern women that they are.

      Delete
    6. If showing arms is considered immodest, is showing legs from knees down okay? I'm not trying to be snarky, really a serious question. Also Kate wore a dress without a coat or boots to the NPG in the snow and the reasoning offered was its just a short walk from the car to the inside. Will the same not apply here. It isnt as if they had to walk from the parking lot for a good 5 minutes before ducking into the building. And for all we know, she had huddled up in a warm coat and like normal people removed it before the session. As a commoner, even I wear short sleeved dresses but cover myself up in a thick coat, gloves and beanie during heavy winter to get to work and back and I still hv to walk the distance from the parking lot!!! So no biggie here.
Just as sometimes I read that its not a big deal when you have nice legs, in this case, she really has nice arms, why not show them off:) Just my two cents.

    7. Meghan is accustomed to being in front of a camera. Has anyone thought that she understands how warm it is under the lights they use. She knows how comfortable she is sitting there and dressed accordingly.

    8. Dear Anon 23:38 and 23:53- I was the one that raised the issue about the sleeveless dress and I believe that the way you've presented this - you have taken this just a titch out of context. To be honest, I'm abundantly aware of the year we are living in- I'm not a prude and as a fashion designer for many years in the US and in Europe (now retired from that line of work) I kinda get it all. I get the dress , I get the bare legs and all of that. And I even get that people wear coats ,too! ;)
I also happen to live just outside London- and knew that it was bloody well freezing yesterday ( as it is today for that matter.) for THAT reason, it looked rather out-of-place on the day- ( one of her fabulous long sleeve jackets , something with sleeves, etc would have ben more approapriate in my book would have best hit the mark. ...and it struck me indeed it was more about looking chic than the more important "job" on the day. That is "it". Please do not read anything into it more than that.
I think Meghan is fabulous and I look forward to her sharing her American style energy and passion in the UK charity sector scene here . I do feel that she'll be shaking things up a bit- and that to me- is good thing.

    9. Some of these comments are so ludicrous it defies belief and is offputting for this blog. This is not Afghanistan and she is not wearing underwear and suspenders. The word "modest" belongs in the Victorian era. She looked event appropriate and professional. This comment is nitpicking in the extreme.

  26. I am so happy that Meghan wore a dress first and foremost. She has a small frame and I feel like the wide leg pants she has worn lately, simply overpower her. She looked very stylish, professional and poised today. Moving on to today's engagement, I thought it went well. Meghan held her own and I think the four of them will do quite fabulously in the future. I can't wait to see more!

  27. Her style today was very reminiscent of Michelle Obama and it was something I was struck by when I first saw her walk on stage. When I found out it was Jason Wu, it made sense why I immediately though of the First Lady. I thought it struck a perfect tone for the event & was complimentary to Catherine, Harry & William.

This was a fabulous platform to present her in her first significant speaking capacity (related to charitable work), and her first fab four group session. I can't wait to see what endeavors she takes up related to the Foundation.

  28. 🌸 No offense but I thought the dress was a summer dress. More appropriate for a stand up event. There is a lot of dress and another pesky belt, a looong one this time. Just a lot of fabric in her lap, overwhelming.
Not an appropriate dress for a forum. In my humble opinion, no offense.

    1. I agree, Surfer Girl. It's just a bit too casual to me, which is why I don't like it being sleeveless. It seems to casual to me as well as disjointed with the shoe. Any woman has a right to show their arms but it's not appropriate center stage for a family that is held to high standards. I will say she was incredibly well spoken and I am thrilled she finally wore another dress.

As always, I really love her jewelry.

    2. She is only showing her arms, doesnt have her skirt flying up or dress length 2 or 3 inches below the knee. I dont really understand the implication that just because the family is held to high standards, sleeveless is off the table? I really dont understand some of these comments that are ridiculously on the verge of nitpicking that her hair and clothes are california style and is not fit for a royal. So whats the definition of dressing royal and i think commenters are just projecting their ideas of what they think a royal should be. I get it this site is about both style and life of Ms.Markle and all these are opinions but when these opinions start to read like the guidelines, thats when it feels icky to me.

    4. 🌸 A perfect garden party dress. Whoever said that. BINGO. :) With a perfect summer hat and some chunky heeled, strapped RL sandals so her heels won’t sink into the grass. Perfect. I have seen her wear a pair of RL sandals like that at the RL event where she was photographed with the Von Westerholtz (?) girl who was said to have set up the blind date with Harry.

Although I'm very interested to see how her previous causes will reflect on her new causes once she becomes a royal. Also, H&M might want to start some work, post wedding, before Kate's back full force. So while I can understand your point, I think it was a grab at the best possible moment. They were able to explain the history & to lay down thoughts on The Foundation moving forward, as they are on the cusp of Meghan becoming the 4th member! Just my thought.

Sure, I can see your point too ;) but I mean, she has her whole life ahead of her. Not even Kate joining the Royal Foundation was immediate after the wedding, there's plenty of time for them to do this event, and to do it before the wedding it feels almost as if they're getting ahead of themselves. As one person said in the comments of the other blog, she's just moving to the UK, let her have some time.

It's been a year(almost) since the marathon so that makes an annual meeting a good thing. They' e already announced that Meghan will be joining as the fourth patron. I think her not being there would have raised more questions and eyebrows than why she was there as just a fiancé.

    5. I think Harry's tired of waiting, Charlotte-France. Plus, having Meghan on that platform can't hurt the UK image right now. I think this appearance had the full backing of both HM and the government. These are unusual, tricky times calling for bold action. She has been fast-tracked the whole time for a reason-not just because she is pretty and clever and not just to appease Harry.

    6. Becca USA and Charlotte - France: I don't think Meghan wants the others to "let her have some time." She seems very passionate about getting involved, and I doubt she would have wanted to be left out. If it were me I would want to be right alongside my fiance helping about, getting involved. What's she supposed to do, sit at home watching the event on TV? I love that she's ready to "hit the ground running," in her own words. It's inspiring!

  31. I thought it was interesting that Meghan mentioned the #timesup and #metoo campaigns when that was the very thing that Kate had to sidestep at the BAFTA’s last week. Wondering how Meghan will support her passion for women’s rights/equality as a Royal when Kate couldn’t support it? It maybe a delicate balancing act for her. Or maybe she will break tradition and be really outspoken? Since she is not the future queen maybe she will have that luxury? Wondering what others think.....

    1. Yes, I cringed when I heard that. I don't know if that was a prepared reference & they have a plan as to how she can weave that into her charitable causes diplomatically? However, it did remind me that she may experience some bumps in the road as she transitions from the way she handled her charitable endeavors in the past, compared to how she will need to handle them moving forward, in this new chapter of her life. Methinks she will have a definite learning curve. Just like everyone else. This is where I believe Kate will be extremely helpful to her. I can see Kate being the one who will be able to discuss things with a "learning" Meghan, as gently & respectfully as possible.

      Delete
    2. I find it interesting that some headlines read that Meghan Markle "backs" these campaigns when in fact she "mentions" them as part of a forum discussion. I think some readers here also mistake that for "advocating" for those movements.

If you listen to what she says, Meghan merely recognizes and states that in the present hyper-aware social climate due to these two campaigns there's a timely opportunity to advance the rights of women, to empower them to speak and to foster a willingness to listen. She understands that the Royal Foundation can probably play a significant role in that. Making reference to a movement is not concrete support of it.

It may seem like semantics; however, that's significantly different from the position Catherine was in. Wearing a certain colour on a certain day because a movement was orchestrating a statement in that manner would have been "support." By accessorizing a very dark gown with black and emeralds I believe that she may have been acknowledging her royal position which prevents her from making such statements, but tacitly revealing where her sympathies lie.

    3. I thought that exchange with the interviewer on the stage was awkward. My impression (only my impression) was that Meghan was subtly reminding the interviewer that she was now more constrained as to what she can and cannot say than when she was an activist actress, but that was going to change as things unfolded. That she would still be true to herself but wasn’t going to go full tilt at the castle yet :) It was intriguing to me—wondering how this is all going to unfold but looking forward to it.

    4. Charlotte - France28 February 2018 at 22:50

I think she did back them, it wasn't just mentioning, she did say something along the lines of '... because of movements like these, there's no better time to support women'. I do believe she's walking a very fine line – not even William could fully acknowledge (he said 'the fight against harassment' but couldn't mention them by name in his BAFTA speech when he's the President of the Academy) the movement, and I don't think that will be good in the long run. I personally don't think standing against sexual abuse is something political, but backing a movement like that – particularly when other members of the family have decided not to – doesn't look good, and yes, she's not a royal /yet/ but these same lines can be used against her when she becomes Duchess like, say, if they meet Trump.

I don't know, I think her causes are wonderful, but a political royal might no be the best idea.

    5. Philly, I think you hit the nail. It's just this ability for people/press to push the interpretations that serve their purposes best, that lend the Royal Family to be careful about what words & terms they say, more than how they say or mean it. This will be interesting to follow as Meghan progresses through her learning curve & evolution. :)

      Delete
    6. I thought that was so interesting too. I took it as wanting to acknowledge the #metoo movement further than what Kate was able to do with her green dress. I think she'll be more outspoken than others, and I doubt she'll be 'learning' much from Kate. They'll just do their different jobs in different methods and in partnership but not lockstep. I'm sure if Kate had been totally against #metoo then Meghan would have known that and not said it, but a different shade of support from Meghan than what Kate provided is going to be the normal moving forward I think.

    7. The best part of this event is that a royal finally said 'women don't need to be helped to find their voices: they already have them.' 9. Charlotte 22:50, with all due respect, that's exactly the kind of misunderstanding I was pointing out. Saying what she did was not an endorsement.

Saying'... because of movements like these, there's no better time to support women' merely acknowledges that others have already been addressing this concern. Therefore, it is timely to address it from the platform of the Royal Foundation as interest is high and the conversation is necessary.

The movements themselves are problematic in various respects. I'm sure the Royal Foundation will find ways to dodge those problems, while they open the door to dialogue and movement toward a new perspective.

What Meghan mentioned is nowhere near anything Charles has said about architecture or other royals' missteps.

    10. I think it was actually a brilliant move by Meghan for a couple of reasons. Much like Heads Together with mental health, part of the work Meghan will continue to do is about breaking the stigma that women's rights are a political issue. Meghan did just that today with her remarks. Pay attention to the general media coverage. I could almost sense the relief from the Royal reporters today, particularly from the women, that were uneasy by the decisions made at the Bafta's. Today's media coverage was overwhelming full of media remembers being happy to state that Meghan could address this because it is not a political issue like the one from Rhiannon Mills. If Royals cannot be political then what Meghan said right on stage with the future King must not be political. See the math works both ways. And because she said it in this forum it legitimatizes her, especially among women who feared Meghan was going to lose her voice. Because she did it today she probably will never need to directly name Me Too or Time's up again if she chooses. She built credibility today that is essential for type of work she wants to continue to do.

    11. This is not the first time I have seen comments saying Meghan will learn from Kate and that Meghan is being pushy and other comments of the same vein insinuating she somehow has a sinister agenda behind all this. Why can not we not agree that these are 2 different women with very different personalities and are very capable of navigating the world of BRF in their own ways. I'm sure their partners are very much aware of who they are and what their motives are, we dont have to assign motives to them. Will she go rogue - really! I find this line of questioning very insulting as if she somehow is not deserving of this relationship. Why are strong, confident women labeled as pushy, non-adjusting and somehow portrayed negatively? Meghan has been in new situations before and has learnt to read the new surroundings and survived. I'm very sure she will do the same here. This is what all normal humans do.

  32. Personally, I love the dress that Meghan wore to this event and I think she looked beautiful. It is basically a shirt dress, tweaked! It is classic with a twist. The epaulettes are unexpected and makes the dress very stylish. I think it is very much in keeping with Meghan's style aesthetic, from what we've seen in pictures, a style, which is clearly different from Catherine's. I thought the dark blue was a wonderful choice of colour, and it worked well with Catherine's blue dress when the two were together on stage.

When I saw that Meghan's dress was Jason Wu's design, I immediately thought of Michelle Obama and the meme of her right to "bare arms" that was so much a part of the press coverage on her style choices as first lady when she wore a sleeveless dress to a state of the union speech. Jackie Kennedy, an indisputable style icon, was also shown wearing a sleeveless dress to a state of the union speech during her husband's tenure. Those speeches are always scheduled in the winter! I did wonder if Meghan felt a bit chilly, though!

  37. Meghan definitely held her own, but I had two qualms. One, I liked the dress, but I'm not sure how appropriate it was for the occasion. I think a blouse or turtleneck underneath would have grounded the ensemble. Secondly, Meghan's elocution and articulation is superb, and I could listen to her all day long. However, my concern is that she could come across as a "pushy" American in the UK. She will have to learn to use her voice craftfully. I'm American and strong women are either villified or lauded. I imagine it's the same in the UK, but tenfold as a royal. My heart goes out to Meghan and I wish her the best, but I fear som challenges ahead. Also, Harry's body language made me nervous. He looked unsure and nervous. That is the first I've seen of this since his engagement to Meghan

    1. SDR, what you describe is exactly how strong, beautiful, talented women are routinely dismissed whatever their continent or culture. It's a deep-seated social construct which is meant to shame and suppress articulate, creative, exuberant women. Calling them pushy or mouthy or opinionated or bossy or whatever is but one way society teaches women to conform to a "more desirable" silent and passive way of being in the world.

What is disturbing is that we do not recognize it and believe that we should dial it back and expect others to so as well. Then we will be agreeable--i.e. submissive and non-threatening. It's insidious. As women we need to recognize it and resist it with all our power.

      Delete
    2. Philly, what I got from SDR, was a sense that there will be an adjustment period adapting to this new role/job. She will be able to make a huge difference, but she may have to attack her causes with a level of finesse that she hasn't had to use in the past. It's not about degrading her strong empowered female voice, rather her potential need to make the adjustments that can come up when any of us take on a new position or job.

      Delete
    3. SDR, I agree with you, and I saw that as well. Meghan’s demeanor and delivery were very different than the other three. Unlike Philly, I do not think it is “insidious” or an attempt at subjugation to note that different cultures have different expectations of behavior or that different roles require us to have different demeanors at times. The monarchy is a hierarchy, and even though they are family, there is a level of deference among themsleves for that inherent heirarchy. It is not “being suppressed” to recognize and adjust how you speak to reflect that. It is respectful.

It was very evident from how Meghan spoke that she is from a very different culture than the other three. This is not inherently good or bad, and could lead to some humorous situations if they were just “a Brit and an American” marrying, but as has been pointed out so often for Catherine, Meghan will not just be marrying her man, she will be accepting a role in one of the oldest institutions in the world. It’s a huge responsibility, and one that she is not inherently familiar with from her upbringing. I am sure she will learn to adjust to this admirably, but it will take some adjusting. How do I use my passionate, enthusiastic, free-spirited, powerful personality to build what I am a part of instead of competing with those around me?

I don’t think it’s necessarily an issue of male or female, it’s just an issue of how you fill your role, and we all do so in every environment every day. I spoke differently to my students at school than I spoke to my fellow teachers, and my principals differently still. I speak differently with my husband at home than I do at a public event. There are times to speak and times to listen. And there are even times to keep your opinion to yourself if it won’t help a situation. (That one is often hard for me!) It’s not repression, it’s just respecting the situation, the people, and even the culture. I think she will do fine. There will most likely be some stumbles along the way, but it looks like they will all work together to work through those stumbles with warmth and positivity.

I needed to hear her speak and engage with William and Catherine on one level, but on another level, I felt like we got the “old” Meghan a bit. I don’t know but after the very first engagement, she just seemed muted to me. I get that she’s learning her role and the city and organizations, but the overall vibe felt off to me. I was glad to hear her voice for a change. I hope that once the wedding is over we can really see her engage more and have a presence. I truly believe that she and Harry can be an awesome unit and maybe I’m ready to get to that point lol.

I think all of us from time to time need a reminder that our voices, thoughts and ideas are important and are worth being heard. 4. Glad to know I'm not alone. I wish them all the success in the world & feel Meghan will be such an asset. That said, I do sense a bit of "been there done that" from her, that makes me cringe.... I mentioned below, that there is a subtle difference between having worked in the charitable sector on behalf of UNWomen or herself & now instead she will soon be working as a representative of The UK, on behalf of The Royal Family. It just is going to be different & No one gets spared The Learning Curve!...

    5. I could not agree more, Becca. Every relationship goes through highs and lows. That is true for relationships of professional nature, and also personal nature. The fact that we have so far seen Meghan and Harry on "high" is great, because it means that they have so much potential, and so much to bring to the royal family and the world. The nagging feeling that I have, is that we have not seen the low. I wish we had seen the low, and how they would handle that. We know that William and Kate have been through some lows, together and professionally. We now see that they are on their way up, and we love it. Heck, even Charles and Camilla have survived enormous pressure throughout their lives, and they seem rock solid. I think that Harry and Meghan would benefit from a personal and professional "low" before their wedding. Just for them to be sure that they are both making the right decision. This is meant in the most positive and supportive way possible. I really want Harry and Meghan to thrive and to be amazing.

  43. Just read it. For those of you concerned about Ms Markle’s ‘dress for the weather’, the Daily Mail has an article on the Duchess of Cambridge’s bare legs, high heels and dress (for the cold weather) at the National Portrait Gallery. No bare arms but no boots and no big coat and this is upon arrival.

    1. Great point! Another reader also posted a good comment about the temperature of stage lights on set. I think she was dressed appropriately. This is not her first speaking engagement at a forum event! Her dress length was long enough to cover over her knees, which is important when sitting on a raised stage and the sleeveless aspect of the dress could have simply been a byproduct of (as mentioned) the heat of the stage lights. She is definitely a pro at these kinds of events and looked fab!

    2. 🌸 I’ve had those same feelings, Becca.

  44. Meghan looks perfect for this function today. The navy blue dress is professional and very flattering to her frame. As someone above mentioned, Meghan is very familiar about sets and how warm under the lights you get / her choice of a sleeveless dress is appropriate. She is a fantastic and comfortable public speaker _ Harry, William, and Kate do a fine job but are not in the ballpark when it comes to Meghan, It will probably be a balancing act for her to “not take over” a speaking event because she is quick thinking and very good at it. Kudos to Kate for all of these appearances. Having had 5 children myself, the last a set of twins, I feel comfortable saying that she looks about done!!!

    1. First of all I highly doubt that the stage for this event would be as brightly lite or as hot as a movie set. Also a slight sleeve on a cold, snowy day would not add very much to someone's body heat. It is Meghan's choice to dress the way she has. I think she looks good, but the dress is not totally appropriate for the occasion. I agree with you, that she is an excellent public speaker…but she will have to watch the content of her words.

    2. I agree Laura! I think she had Way more to learn than she may think! Hopefully she will be receptive & not just barrel ahead, thus causing distractions to her otherwise good works & efforts. This is not about her giving up who she is at the core. It's about The Magnitude of The Role & Position she is taking on! Add to that she's doing so in a new country! She will no longer just be representing MM, she will be representing The UK! She will find the right balance for both herself & the country..... but it may not happen overnight.

  46. I know I don't know anything about the RF, but it seems things have changed. As far as MM conforming to the RF, the RF of the future IS Will and Kate. The Queen seems content to just have happy family members, and I don't think Charles will be too dictatorial toward his sons or their wives. As far as MM representing the RF, she will BE the RF, so if she and Harry are comfortable I don't see that other rules will apply.

She looks pretty, the dress is gorgeous, she shoes are fab, however this look clashes, and badly, with what the other people on that stage are wearing, the overall atmosphere and most importantly the nature of the event. She got a lot of 'underdressed' comments previously, now she is overdressed. I don't mean it inappropriate in the sense of immoral or offensive, of course not, just out of sync.
Prior to the engagement day, I wasn't really aware of Meghan's existence so I can't comment on her being true to herself or to her style, but I loved how she came across during the engagement interview - smart, personable and genuine, even if she does overuse words like 'sweet'. Somehow yesterday she lost those qualities and she looked almost 'too comfortable', very controlled and confident in a loud sort of way. I suspect she was in fact very nervous, but that 'professionalism' didn't appeal to me in contrast with Harry, William and Kate's natural vulnerability. And I am sure, in response to some comments, that she is way too intelligent to believe that she has nothing to learn from Kate or any other member of that family - and I do say that as a Swede who moved here at 19 to go to university and is still learning about being part of this society 20 years on :)

    1. I wonder how it would have been if she had pulled a "Kate" & worn her Engagement Dress, but in one of the other gorgeous colors. I believe it even comes in Navy? Then matched it with a nice pump? She would have stayed in her wheelhouse, since she chose the dress before, but if we are talking visual continuity, that dress style or another Navy Sheath dress would have really hit a nice note. Otherwise I personally didn't have an issue with what she wore, just noting that she already had worn a more classic dress & the same might have worked on this day.

    2. glueandgreyeyes, I responded to your comment about the dress subject, but then I realized I hadn't read your full comment. :) I agree with the rest of what you said! I too pick up a vibe from Meghan that she's got this whole thing down already. I know she's worked with UNWomen, etc & met with world leaders etc. But This is a Whole New Ball Game!!! This is why I do think that Kate will be a gentle asset for her. I see Kate as someone who can very delicately but knowledgeably share wisdom with Meghan when situations arise.... which they will. There Is a learning curve, & Meghan will be No exception, no matter how much she may think otherwise, based on her prior experience, & even if some of her work did take place in Commonwealth Countries! Just my 2 cents.

  48. I think she looking so nice. Powerful, youth and very sweet and sympthatic. In my opinion she will bring some fresh air in the foundation but she will bring her own note without putting the hole attention to her. I really like her and I think Prince Harry made a very good choice. I like a releaxed the queen had become and that is a so good way that she welcomes all hear grandchildrens partnes so warm into the family. The Queen had really learned her leasons and she is so an wounderful Lady.

  49. I enjoyed seeing the 4 together as well as Meghan speaks about women
I like the few references to marriage
At the level of the style I love the dress, the shoes too but for me it did not go together

  50. Harry wore a shirt without a tie and Will had a tie and a sweater under his jacket. I think they all wore what they feel comfortable in. It would be hard for MM to hit the nail right on the head and wear something that everyone felt was appropriate. I loved it and thought it was really attractive when she stood or walked.

And we need to remember that MM is an expert at getting along with people. She seems to have the right blend of humility/eagerness/friendliness/curiosity/self-confidence to have made firm friends with anyone who counts in Canada and now the RF. Just think of the egos of the people who call her a friend. I don't see her losing herself and becoming dictatorial.

  51. People don’t realize that they’re basically saying Meghan should dumb herself down in order to make others look good. The only downside to this marriage is people expecting her to not be 100% herself but only 50% because she might make others look bad.

    1. Monica, I've been giving this a lot of thought over the last days. I just posted something similar on the most recent MAM Post. Meghan has so much enthusiasm & is so excited to dig in, that I think sometimes that's what people are reacting too. (a very American trait). However, I think if she adjusts her perspective & keeps her eye on the "Long Game", (a very Un-American trait:) she will be just fine! :)

      Delete
    2. So in other words she should appear less interested and less excited? I think there is enough room for all personalities on the table. I personally do not think she should dumb herself down, if she does it will be so obvious (that is not who she is). I personally think there is no need for her to adjust anything and I think she did very well for this forum.

      Delete
    3. Playing the long game has nothing to do with with being an American or not, it depends on the person. Meghan has given up a lot for Harry and has been adjusting her lifestyle for the past year for him. Which is proof in itself that she can and has played the long game. I don’t know what you’re seeing that makes you think otherwise. She’s been doing what she’s suppose to which is work. Like I said she shouldn’t have to dim her light for others to shine.

    6. Adjusting ones whole lifestyle isn’t some short term thing. I’m sure she had to think long and hard about all the stuff she’s giving up for him. She gave up her freedom to go out and just do normal things, her career, moving to a new country and spend the rest of her life representing said country are not short term things.

  52. I watched the four of them together on YouTube. I thought they all did well. It was great to see them all together. I do think a sleeveless dress is unusual for winter. I get what people are saying on here about her coming off as though she has no learning curve. M does come off very confident...does it translate at moments to overconfident? Maybe. Overall I think she's doing great, though. I don't love this dress but I think my tastes follow the duchess' tastes overall. The two are very different and that's A-ok. I think her hair would've looked better in a low pony tail with maybe a couple whispy pieces at the sides as she seems to really like.

    1. I like that you clearly state you like the Duchess style, yes she has a style that other people like. I prefer Meghan's style, I feel like it's modern
and relatable. For this forum, I thought she looked beautiful, her dress, shoes and her hair very pretty and appropriate for the occasion. I also do not see the difference between the Duchess hair and Meghan's hair on this forum, both ladies had the hair part and wore it down.

I just entered a comment on the DKB thanking you for your work but forgot and made it anonymous. I'll do better here! I wish Prince Harry and his Meghan every joy in their life together, and I wish that I had ever looked even 1% as good as she looks in her photographs! She and the Duchess of Cambridge have differing personal styles and both are beautiful. So there.

  54. Overconfident? Should a 36 year old woman act like a meek little girl who needs her hand held or something? SMH
she should keep being herself and if anyone feels overshadowed they should step their game up. There is nothing wrong with intelligent confident women instead of society being intimidated by them they should embrace them and learn from them. It’s messed up that a man is never told to appear less smart or to not be confident in himself. Sorry Charlotte for the mini rant.
Another thing it was an indoor event I’m sure it wasn’t cold in the building so her wearing a sleeveless dress is fine.
Anyone who followed Meghan knows she been about women empowerment before Harry came into her life. It shouldn’t have shocked anyone that she mentioned those movements. Especially since 4 months ago she was apart of that industry that promotes those movements. Treating women like human beings instead of property isn’t a political issue. Besides she merely mentioned those movements as examples.
All four personalities are good for the monarchy it shows that this generation of the royal family are in touch with what’s going on right now. The fact that they are embracing a feminist shows that. Meghan knows that she has a lot to learn and she knows that there are rules she has to follow. Clearly she’s been doing that, learning about her new life and still being herself.

    1. I think the word "overconfident" is an inaccurate description IMO. One can be confident (as in state of mind) and that's a wonderful thing. Actions are different story. What *I* saw, on more than one occasion now, is her speaking over Harry and dominating the conversation. She did it during the engagement interview and again during the Forum. I am not suggesting that she should act like a wallflower, but acting like she has it all under control and has nothing to learn going forward, may not be the most successful approach here. Just my opinion.

    2. I wish there is a like button, Monica. Really well said! I find it ludicrous reading comments like she looked too comfortable, confident and loud and her being professional is somehow bad compared to the other 3 and their natural vulnerability - it feels like some deliberately look to manufacture anything bad to say. She isnt an early 20 something, she is in her mid 30s, well traveled and educated, has lived life on her own and is clearly comfortable in her own skin. More power to her I say.

    3. 🌸 rf, I agree with what you said (after all these years of agreeing, are you sure we’re not long lost sisters or something, lol) and, I like the kindly way you said what you said. :)

Anon 04:07. What you said is well and good but regardless of her age and experience, being confident in a considerate and humble way is very powerful. I think that shows true wisdom and maturity. Talking over people (sometimes loudly) and interrupting is rude and since the dawn of humanity always has been. Those things can be overcome though, thankfully. I think Meghan will make those necessary adjustments. It would be a basic charitable thing to do. And she aspires to a charitable lifestyle. She’ll work it out. But it does need to be worked out, in my opinion. :)

    4. She acts like she has nothing to learn and knows it all? Hmm are we even looking at the same videos? Or is it projecting one’s opinions onto her? Nowhere does she come across in that manner imo
Not having public fear of talking and looking confident should not be confused with dominating the conversation. I’m more surprised by the comments that mention her more outgoing extrovert nature when i saw even more comments supporting other rf members who are maybe not as extroverted and perhaps bit reserved defending their inherent nature and background. Double standards would you say?
Are we now tring to assign intent when in the past the same has been used to accuse other posters.
      PS

      Delete
    5. Anonymous 17:19. Nobody is trying to assign intent. Meghan spoke for herself and explained how experienced she was,how she had worked with NGO and bigger organisations and how she had done a lot behind the scenes and how she was ready to hit the ground running. It may not have been her intention but it sounded like self promotion and knowing it all. We don't know if that was her intent but we can comment on what impression her words and het actions ( interrupting, over speaking) give. As SG says, it should be a thing to work on, for perception is everything.

      Delete
    6. LOL. We may be, SG. We may be. ;-)

PS, we are looking at the same videos, but interpreting them very differently. In *this* instance, Meghan was not sitting with her fellow costars doing an interview for a Hollywood reporter. In that case, I would share your opinion that her demeanor was professional. But the reality is that she appeared, with her husband to be at a Forum that was associated with his efforts and accomplishments (along with W&K). Under these circumstances, it is my opinion that humility, reserve, and recognition of HIS efforts would have been the "professional" thing to do for a future member of the RF. It is not taking away from her to put the spotlight on her husband to be when the situation warrants it. It makes for a happy marriage and a smooth royal path. Goodness knows that he has done everything in his power to put the spotlight on her and that's great. But fair is fair. Again, it isn't about confidence or the lack there of. One can be quite confident and know when to take control and speak up, or not. Perhaps this is what you were referring to with my past remarks, but I cannot be sure.

General statement and opinion on my part: one can be 1000% confident without uttering a word. Another person can be quite vocal while at the same time reflecting a lack of confidence or need to fit in. We're talking attitude and behavior here. Again, IMO.

      Delete
  55. PS, yes I agree, double standards for sure. Not just about being "loud" but even with clothes being appropriate and all, I have seen some royal members wearing mini-dresses and there were no complaints of being "inappropriate".
