Commonwealth Day Service: Meghan Attends First Official Event with the Queen!

Meghan Markle attended her first official event with the Queen this afternoon when she and Harry joined senior members of the Royal family for the annual Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey.

Today's service was the perfect opportunity to officially introduce Meghan to the Commonwealth. It is by far the most formal event she has attended thus far. Since the engagement interview she has referenced the Commonwealth several times and is clearly interested in visiting member nations.

Indeed, it has been widely reported the couple have been enlisted to play an important role in the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in April. Leaders from all member countries are expected to gather in London and Windsor. They will come together to reaffirm common values, address the shared global challenges faced and agree how to work to create a better future for all Commonwealth citizens, particularly young people. An array of forums, meetings and a glittering State Banquet are on the agenda. The Telegraph reports it will conclude with a special celebration marking the Queen's 92nd birthday at the Royal Albert Hall marking her lifelong commitment to the Commonwealth.

It was a large turnout from the Royal family with the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, the Countess of Wessex, the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra present.

Harry and Meghan arrived with William and Kate.

They were treated to a performance by London-based Ghanaian musicians One-Drum.

The foursome stopped on their way in to enjoy it.

They were greeted as they entered the Abbey.

The Queen has been Head of the Commonwealth throughout her 66 year reign. Her Majesty has reinforced links and seen the association of nations grow from seven to fifty-three members during her reign.

The Queen arrives.

Organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society, the Commonwealth Service is the largest annual inter-faith gathering in the United Kingdom. The Commonwealth represents a global network of 53 countries and almost 2.4 billion people, of whom 60 per cent are under 30 years old.

Each year the Commonwealth adopts a theme upon which the Service is based. This year's theme 'Towards a Common Future' emphasises how the Commonwealth can address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizens through sub-themes of sustainability, safety, prosperity and fairness. The theme links to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

The Abbey was decorated with an assortment of beautiful flowers from Commonwealth nations.

Attendees were treated to musical performances from Ghanaian drum collective One-Drum, Ngati Ranana London Maori Club, Portsmouth Gospel Choir, and British musician Liam Payne.

Spoken reflections will be given by award-winning spoken word artist Jaspreet Kaur, and Dr Andrew Bastawrous, Co-Founder and CEO of Peek Vision.

Guests of honour among the 2,000 strong congregation will include the Prime Minister, the Prime Minister of Malta, the Hon Dr Joseph Muscat MP, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC, alongside High Commissioners, Ambassadors and dignitaries, senior politicians from across the UK and Commonwealth, faith leaders and over 800 school children and young people.

All members of the congregation stand for The Act of Affirmation to the Commonwealth read by the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

Chris Ship noted Harry's singing made Meghan smile :)

Ahead of the service, the Queen shared the following message:

"We all have reason to give thanks for the numerous ways in which our lives are enriched when we learn from others. Through exchanging ideas, and seeing life from other perspectives, we grow in understanding and work more collaboratively towards a common future.
There is a very special value in the insights we gain through the Commonwealth connection; shared inheritances help us overcome difference so that diversity is a cause for celebration rather than division. We shall see this in action at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting which takes place in the United Kingdom next month, bringing together young people, business and civil society from across the Commonwealth.
These gatherings are themselves fine examples of how consensus and commitment can help to create a future that is fairer, more secure, more prosperous and sustainable. Having enjoyed the warm hospitality of so many Commonwealth countries over the years, I look forward to the pleasure of welcoming the leaders of our family of 53 nations to my homes in London and Windsor.
Sport also contributes to building peace and development. The excitement and positive potential of friendly rivalry will be on display next month as we enjoy the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia. Contributing to the success of the Games, alongside athletes and officials, will be thousands of volunteers.
Voluntary effort, by people working as individuals, in groups or through larger associations, is so often what shapes the Commonwealth and all our communities. By pledging to serve the common good in new ways, we can ensure that the Commonwealth continues to grow in scope and stature, to have an even greater impact on people's lives, today, and for future generations.”

Following the service, Meghan was given flowers by a little girl.

William, Kate, Harry and Meghan walked through Dean's Yard for a reception. Below, Meghan with The Very Reverend Dr John Hall, the 38th Dean of Westminster, after the service.

Meghan told a group of children she's "very excited" about the wedding.

Victoria Murphy posted a video.

Meghan looked every inch the future Duchess today.

Meghan wore the rich cream Amanda Wakeley Cream Sculpted Tailoring Crombie Coat (with thanks to Meghan Maven). British designer Amanda Wakeley is a firm royal favourite. The late Princess Diana and the Duchess of Cambridge have worn a number of her designs.

The $1,199 piece is described as "A pristinely cut coat will pull your entire seasonal wardrobe together, and none come more elegant than our sculpted tailoring Crombie coat." It's available in limited sizing at Amanda Wakeley and Orchard Mile.

Meghan Markle Style identified Meghan's dress as the Amanda Wakeley's Springsteen Midnight Tailored Midi dress. It's discounted from $680 to $267 at Orchard Mile and available in several sizes on the Amanda Wakeley website.

More from the product description:

'This fitted, structurally seamed dress in midnight is a bold choice for any occasion. The bodice is lined in silk, and the signature full-length back zip in gold is exposed. This is a fantastic staple dress that will see you from the boardroom to any function in an instant.'

The designer offered confirmation via her Facebook Page.

Meghan's hat is by leading British milliner Stephen Jones.

Meghan carried $675 the Mulberry Small Darley Bright Navy Cross Grain Leather clutch. It's available in an array of colours on the Mulberry website (with thanks to Perth Fashion).

Meghan wore her Manolo Blahnik BB pumps in navy.

Meghan's earrings are the Adina Reyter 14k Gold Three Diamond Amigos Curve (with thanks to Meghan's Fashion).

The Duchess of Cambridge wore Beulah London today. To read more pop over to Duchess Kate.

In light of the comments since the Royal Foundation Forum, it feels important to share the note I wrote when Harry and Meghan got engaged again. I had hoped the issue of comparing both women and using one to bash the other would subside. Sadly, that's evidently not been the case. I appreciate the time and effort which goes into writing comments, and I hate to delete them, however if this issue isn't dealt with it can only serve to derail enjoyable conversation time and time again. We're getting to a stage where events attended by both Kate and Meghan are a free for all. It has to stop. It is my sincere hope today's service will mark the beginning of a change in comments. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Kate is Kate. Meghan is Meghan. Both are entirely different women, with different strengths and weaknesses, in entirely different roles. In a society that pits women against each other, as a community we must strive to avoid the Kate v Meghan narrative. On 'both sides' of the fence, particularly cruel remarks have been left. The primary reason I started the separate blog was to avoid the negativity created by endless comparisons. This blog is not a venue for tearing Kate apart nor is the other blog a place to relentlessly bash Meghan. I think people forget William, Kate, Harry and Meghan are all on the same team - the future of the monarchy - this sort of imagined rivalry is the very last thing they want. Separately, there's been unwarranted vicious comments about Meghan in general, such comments are not welcome here. Constructive criticism along the way is of course absolutely fine but vicious attacks will not be posted. I hope to foster a warm and welcoming community here with interesting debates, I'll need your help for that. There's already a group of fanastic posters here, I have no doubt we can achieve a nice space for those following Meghan's journey. Thank you!

An important milestone for Meghan today!

  4. I tuned in live right before they arrived (streaming on Youtube), it was so exciting to watch! She looks stunning in white, and I love that all four of them coordinate in their navy. I wonder if that was a happy coincidence or if they discuss these things ahead of time! They stopped to watch a performance that was happening right by the entrance and she did a little head bob/dance which was cute!

    1. My time slot commitment was between 11:00 am-12:00 USA/EST. I was searching to watch live stream. I found the live stream on Reuters and watched from the start to finish. It was an amazingly inspiring one hour, especially the eye doctor. I recommend that people watch the entire service which is a sampling of all the varieties.

When I saw Meghan in white, I thought of sofy from this blog. One of her recommendation was a white coat for Meghan.
Here is the link to the white coat sofy recommended for The Commonwealth Day church service.

Sofy, your recommendation for International Women’s day, white sweater, and this coat for this day, makes you Stylist of the month for MAM blog in my book.

Meghan did well with that size beret hat; it worked well for her.

    2. You know, in the past I have always thought maybe yes, maybe no? Today, I think with HM wearing Burgundy & the group, including Camilla & Sophie, wearing Navy &/or White..... methinks at times there may be memos! :) Today the group presented such a striking picture! :)

    3. I saw the head bob as well. That was nice that they stopped for part of the dance and William was clapping at the end.

    4. I agree Becca and with others that this might have been a co-ordinated effort on attire. The Queen was basically in Royal Colors, the way she is when she wears her Royal Robe. She stood out as being at the top.

    5. Anon15 – thank you for reminding me, I’d forgotten that suggestion, lol.
I guess I now have to keep up my good track record for Meghan and Kate predictions. I’ve suggested two repeats for Kate on Saturday, so now I have to wait to see where Meghan will appear next.

    6. Ali, in one of the new pics Charlotte put up (either here or at DKB?) There's a great full look at Anne's Outfit & It's not only Navy & Cream, but it's Gorgeous! I think it's the first time I've seen Anne & thought Wow!:)

    7. Anne's had this coat since the 1980s, lol.

      Delete
    8. I agree, Becca that Anne looks stunning. If, as soft says, the coat is from the 1980s, then Anne has not gained any weight and the coat has stood the test of time.

      Delete
    9. Love Anne's entire look, and love that it's timeless from the 1980s. Can there be any doubt that someone asked all the ladies of the Queen's family to coordinate? I like that Anne and Meghan are wearing the cream coats with all the other royal ladies in navy and the Queen outstanding in that lovely red. I hope they took a large family photo either before or after the service . . .

    10. Anne is a class act. Maybe the older I get, the more I appreciate her duty and service.

  5. I love the outfit. The cream coat and navy blue look great together. I wish she hadn’t flipped the collar, the bright white fabric underneath clearly isn’t meant to be shown.

    1. Oh, I liked the collar. I thought it added a fun flair but not in a distracting way.

      Delete
    2. Although on the designers website they show the coat being worn with the collar up.

      Delete
    3. Somehow it looked nice the way she wore the collar. The designer may have it modeled certain ways, but the person who wears it can take ownership and wear it to their own comfort. Her dress is a low cut with her chest shown, the collar standing did better coordinated with the dress.

      Delete
    4. I agree that the white facing fabric (or whatever it is) wasn’t meant to be shown, which is why I am confused as to why the collar is shown up on the model. I actually like the style of the collar when up, but the facing fabric is a bit of a needle scratch for me. However, she looks amazing!

      Delete
    5. I wholeheartedly agree.

      Delete
    6. The white facing on the collar is likely meant to complement the band on the hip line. I like the line created by the collar to the dropped waist, but for me the detail on the dropped hip or its fastening did not enhance the coat. It wasn't as flattering as it might have been. But I must say, the royals now have Meghan in their coats and clutches. (Giggle.)

  8. All royals got the memo: blue and/or white. Let the queen shine in purple. M got the basic idea so right this time around. Like the fascinator, the dress, the coat and the shoes. Minor quibble: the fit of the coat isn't that great and the collar for sure was not meant to stand up(looking at the coat on amanda wakely site)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I commented earlier but when I looked on Amanda's site the coat is shown in several photos with the collar turned up. May depend what link you go to. I went to her Official site and looked at the coat which had several views of it being worn by models.

    2. Actually, the model has the collar up. Its called popping a collar. It can give a shirt, blazer, coat a little more
      style. Looks great

    3. I really like her collar up but that white felt facing! The model is wearing the collar up but it doesn't have white facing visible like Meghan's collar. ???

    4. I agree that the coat doesn’t fit quite right. The collar pop doesn’t bother me. But the hat—and I’ll admit I don’t “get” most of the hats the royals wear—isn’t a win IMO

  11. Well, navy seems to be the look of the day based on the Fab Four and other arrivals!

I love the idea of Meghan’s look, especially the charming beret, but the coat feels weirdly shapeless to me. The big band in the middle sort of saps the energy from it. It feels like there should be a belt a la her engagement coat or nothing. Would love a better look at the dress she’s wearing.

But aside from that, how lovely to see her at this event. I have been amazed by how she’s been welcomed by the family even though she’s not an “official royal” yet (good for them!) and how seamless she’s fit in. So looking forward to Duchess Meghan!

    1. I have to agree, that band in the middle should be a bit more structured I think. As is, it's oddly shapeless. I think she could have gone a size smaller on the coat overall. She looks amazing though, love the hat - something totally different but classic. I wonder if she's on a pre-wedding diet a la Kate, she looks quite thin in this!

  12. I'm watching the service as I work at home today. I couldn't help but be pulled away by the story from the eye surgeon that's working in commonwealth countries to help get people basic (but life-changing) eye care. Meghan was obviously captured by this story - you could see it in her face. Others were listening passively but she was totally present. There's a lot of hate and criticism flying around about her, but she has something that I don't see much of within the Royal Family, and that is PASSION. That's not meant to be a criticism of the others but rather an observation -- she's new blood and she's bringing something special with her. She cares and I believe she will make a big impact.

It's always fun to see what she wears but even more than that, I'm excited to watch her on her journey.

I saw his parents and his brother marry, and I will be requesting off work for his wedding as well. 17. I think she looks lovely - very well put together, sharp, clean lines, classic colors. It looks like a Princess Anne outfit but with modern lines and less busy in blue and white than Princess Anne's usual florals or plaids. Overall, I like Meghan's outfit quite a lot. The only negative for me is that with the collar turned up you can see the felt (?) backing of the collar/lapel and I'm not sure how I feel about that patch of stark white there. It is styled with the collar turned up in one of the pics above, so perhaps that isn't a faux pas...?

Anyway, overall it's super exciting to see Meghan at this event, sitting right behind the queen. Can't wait to see her at the reception as well (hopefully we'll get pics of that). I am so excited for her official entrance into the family, and for Harry to have a partner at future events. Yay!!

More later when I've seen more pics and have time to digest.

  26. OMG! OMG! It's cream and navy - just cream and navy with no black trousers/shoes/bag to be seen! I am literally jumping up and down and punching the air! Meghan is truly starting to transform into a royal duchess before our eyes. Woo-hoo!

I have serious handbag envy over this one - not for the first time with Meghan's I must say. I prefer this slimmer hat to the Christmas Day one and the dress looks lovely from what we can see of it (fitted like her green engagement one?). My only slight niggles are that the coat looks much too big on her again (surely it's meant to be more fitted than that?) and I wouldn't have popped the collar when there is interfacing underneath that is clearly a different shade to the coat material. That said, I think Amanda Wakeley could be a really good fit for Meghan's style - I wonder if she might become one of her go-to designers after the wedding.

  31. Why draw comparisons between Kate and Meghan? I, for one, am just delighted the RF has two such strong women to take it forward into the coming decades. Both are a tremendous assets and have so much to offer, let's celebrate them, not look for reasons to bash them. Annie, UK

  33. Charlotte, your entries are always so timely, and are a go to resource for me. And I am very respectful of your blog's criteria. I would respectfully add that any debate swirling about the definition of feminism is also a negative catalyst that takes away from the purpose of your blog. I would like to focus, as I've said before, on the event and not listen to pundit commentary that invokes dissent.

I return to my comments that Meghan's navy dress is so elegant and classic and I don't see Meghan's style to date as minimal. Sometimes less is more. I love the white coat. I can't tell from the model what the designer envisioned for the length of sleeves, as it appears Meghan's sleeve length is relatively long and has some bunching fabric on the shoulder. I do love the silhouette including the drop waist line. It's a little bit of a Victorian vibe for me without being dated. And it is unique and appropriate!

As someone mentioned above, her hat style is in its early stages, and evolving. I greatly prefer the understated approach as opposed to a ostentatious design.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Beautiful outfit, I am not a huge fan of that style hat on anyone but she looked polished and lovely from head to toe. Everyone looked really great today.

  35. Is there a reason why the royals always dress in such dark colors? I thought it was supposed to be a celebration service (but I'm not British so maybe I'm wrong).

I think Meghan nailed it with this outfit! I love Meghan's shoes but I wish she had wore a different pair (or color)! For a split second I thought she and Kate were wearing identical shoes, I hope the media doesn't make a "thing" of it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Pauline, what color of shoe do you think she should have wron? If she doesn't wear Navy what else, white? black? Let the media do their thing and let Meghan make her style decisions.

      Delete
    2. I'm only guessing, but I think they probably dress in darker colors to be formal and professional for the service. Then, they can pull out the brights for things like Trooping.

      Delete
    3. I've seen at least one outlet referring to them as "Sole Sisters" but only in the kindest of ways! No comparisons, just updates on what they each wore & the event! It would be so nice if all coverage had that nice matter of fact info & only a nice complimentary headline. :)

      Delete
    4. Given the time of year (technically still Winter), the dark colors are appropriate and the cream/white hints at Spring. I prefer the dark shoe with the dress and for this event. A nude shoe or bright color would be better suited for Spring or Summer

  38. Love the beret! Not too crazy about the coat. I think it would look better without the band detail around the waist, or maybe more nipped in at the waist? Overall she looks lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Meghan looked very good despite the awful fit of the coat--the sleeves are too long and the waist band fits her too low (especially when compared to the model). The dress underneath is beautiful. I wish she had closed her coat after the ceremony so that the look remained more formal. Open it has the slight look of a medical coat. Nice look, though.

  40. Elegant and perfect.
I am sorry you had to post that warning message Charlotte. It must be a thankless task moderating comments here.

  41. Megan looked absolutely lovely, and if there is such a thing as a "royal look" then she has achieved it today. Her white "coat dress" with the navy dress peeping through is elegant. I have a feeling that the "beanie" silhouette is what Meghan is going for in hats for the time being. She is not officially in the royal family yet. Also, it seems to me Kate was wearing a lot of fascinators early in her royal life, and if I remember correctly, just recently started wearing wide brimmed hats to royal events. It was very nice to see the Wales "family" all coordinated in navy and white. It looked very cohesive, and set them off together, if I'm making sense. Perhaps some day, we'll see all three of the Wales women wearing gorgeous broad brimmed hats!

  42. Meghan looks beautiful in her cream coat. When I saw the first picture all I thought was WOW; she does America, Harry, the Royal Family and, most especially, the Queen, proud. A lovely engagement for everyone today. Meghan and Harry look so happy together, I am so thankful that Harry has someone to share these events with him. So nice to be able to go home and chat about the day with someone over tea or a cocktail. I'm not a fan of Meghan's coat, the construction is boxy and unbecoming on her in my opinion, but she looked appropriate and happy and relaxed and confident. She wears all of those traits perfectly.

I noticed how all the ladies, including the Duchess of Cornwall, color coordinated their outfits with white and navy. How lovely to make all ladies feel included. It will be fun to watch Meghan do more family oriented events! And this blog is lovely - I've read a few others that aren't and can be very vicious. There is no need to be a troll behind a computer screen. These ladies are still women and just happened to fall in love with public figures. I think Kate will guide and help Meghan in her new role and that is great!

She looks beautiful, but I don’t like the tailoring on her coat. Its a bit sloppy and swallows her petite frame. the color is lovely and her hat is great, but just that one detail.

I think the coat looked better when it was open, it didn't seem as overwhelming as it did when she arrived. Meghan looked so adorable in the beret. She is just "as cute as a button", isn't she?

    2. 🌸 Meghan knocked it out of the park today.
I love the entire outfit. So classic, fresh. Only the coat when closed glaringly showed, surprisingly,
bad tailoring and fit. Still love the outfit though.
Her earrings were minuscule and were a
“search-for-them-and-try-to-figure-them-out-distraction” rather than an enhancement, in my opinion, lol. A very small pair of the most brilliant diamond studs or a round little ball earring of sterling or 14K gold would have been less frustrating and perfect in my humble opinion.

Still she looked calm, reserved and self-composed.
She really looks as though she feels at home with the Royal family.

    3. Hi Rhea, I have that same problem with every coat or blazer I buy, the sleeves are always about 1/2 inch to an inch too long.

      Delete
    4. Rhea, it's a strange one this, isn't it? It seems to fit fine across the shoulders and it looks great when it's open, but the fit around the waist doesn't look quite right on her when it's fastened, does it? I did wonder whether she might still be adjusting to the different dress size numbers on this side of the Atlantic, but if she was buying her US size, everything would be too small for her not too big, so I don't know. I can't wait to see her wear some bespoke pieces that are tailored to her exact frame - maybe if they do a tour of Australia later in the year when the Invictus Games are on, as speculated, we might see some stunning pieces! Fingers crossed.

    5. Rhea, funnily I just posted about that below. I too asked if I was the only one? Guess not! :)

      Delete
    6. Yes hoping she gets the future dresses altered to her size and also surprised that she hasn’t done it coz she has said in an interview about how much of a difference tailoring a garment to a persons body measurements makes !

I guess she doesn’t have a stylist in London helping her out .
Meghan should hire somebody to help with fashion coz she would be attending many events and the looks should be planned prior .

      Delete
    7. Rhea, with all due respect, Meghan is going to Marry Harry and possibly become a Duchess or some other important title, I would think she would be planning her outfits prior the many events she would be attending, why wouldn't she? Even when she was an actress they would plan outfits prior events. Have you taken into account that Meghan is a fiancee at the moment and may not have access to all resources a Duchess would have.
Maybe she prefers more room to her coats, and eventually when she becomes a Dutchess she may have more options to work with.

  48. Full of admiration for Meghan today. This was her first major royal event, and she most definitely didn't disappoint. She looked perfectly turned out, loved the beret style hat, it so suited her. The colour combination cream and navy was quite lovely. She sang the national anthem, and looked completely engrossed in all that went on. If HM was to watch back today's events, I think she would be more than happy with the way Meghan carried herself !

The slim fitting coat is so much better than the ones with the tie belts.
She looked very elegant and full marks for singing the National Anthem and the hymns. Must have been a bit of an ordeal, making her first walk through Westminster Abbey and it is such a long walk, but she coped beautifully.
Must say all the royals ladies looked great and mostly colour co-ordinated.

    ReplyDelete
  53. This is my personal favourite of Meghan's outfits to date. Love the colour combination and think that the length of the ensemble is sophisticated and elegant. Sadly however, her tailoring is still needing work. The coat is so poorly fitted that it dwarfs her frame significantly - again. It looks like its straight off the shelf. It is also not designed to have the collar upright, as you can see the undercollar is white not cream, and to me this distracts from the overall elegant look she was aiming for. This look is fine on a more casual outfit but not for this occasion. Overall I think she looks really lovely but sadly, not polished.

    ReplyDelete
  54. She looks lovely today - I think the hat is so well suited to her - the scale of it works well on her smaller sized head. Plus, it lets everyone SEE her vs if she had a wide brim hat on. I love the white on her with the navy.

  56. I love this look! It's a royal uniform in a way but also very Meghan. Loved the smaller beret compared to the larger brimmed hats of the other royal ladies. She looked lovely and while we're on the others Queen Elizabeth's fashions get more hip every year! Her purple outfit today was smashing.

She nailed it today!! This kind of coat is SO CHIC!! I remember Kate on Easter Sunday on their first Australia tour - a McQueen coat it was back then and it was perfection!! Elegance, grace - these coats have it all and both women wear them to perfection. And that dress underneath - *swoon* - the pumps! - the bag! Oh, I don´t even know where to start!
The four of them looked great today - Diana would be proud and I´m sure Charles is!!

  58. I so much prefer her dress looks. She works a dress so well :)

My main quibble is the same. Her coats don’t fit her properly. And the popped collar would have looked fine if not for the super white felt underneath. I know it’s popped on the designer website but it looks silly here. Nevertheless, only minor things today. The navy and white contrast looks great and she looked lovely. Much more royal, and not just because she was wearing a dress. There was more polish to this outfit.

Meghan looks very pretty and elegant. I think there were moments when it must have been a bit overwhelming for her, sitting at the front, just behind HM, and listening to those trumpets and the magnificent organ... I didn't have time to watch the full service but from the videos it looks like she was very focused and animated. I'm sure watching the performers was interesting for her.

  68. I suspect everyone who has been clamoring for more polish will certainly appreciate this very duchess look today! I think Meghan did a great job of blending her personal flair for chic minimalism with royal polish. I think she looks excellent for the occasion. It's definitely the most royal look we've seen Meghan wear, so far, but still very her, with the clean and classic lines and colors. Very put together. I like navy on her, as well as cream. The hat is not my favorite style, but I think Meghan pulls it off.

Are Meghan and Kate wearing the same navy pumps?

It was good to see Meghan in this formal royal setting with the other members of the family. I'm always impressed by how well she carries herself, even if she may be nervous on the inside. And I'm still of the opinion that it's good that she jump in head first and start working and taking part. I say this because I'm so glad she was included in the Commonwealth Service instead of excluded. It must make Meghan feel very accepted and free to do the work she's passionate about because the Queen has been welcoming.

  69. Very nice outfit for Meghan, this is my favorite look from the ones she’s worn since the engagement. The coat does seem a bit ill-fitted, but hopefully she’ll find a good seamstress in London who will be able to make alterations of this type for her. Rarely do the clothes of the peg fit perfectly.

Very interesting to see the proper order of precedence followed, with wives seated after the born princesses, since the husbands weren’t there.

  71. I love the coat, obsessed by the dress, clutch & shoes. What I love about the coat is how it has that lovely kiss type closure at the waist & I actually love the line the popped color gives to the coat, white felt backing & all. :) What I am curious about thought is..... is it me, or does it look almost a size too big? I get the design, but I think a size smaller (beyond just tailoring) would eleviate that poof on her back, have the shoulders fit better, correct the sleeves from being too long & overall, just give it a more sleek look. Just my 2 cents. But I Definitely Love The Look! Meghan Knocked it Out of The Park! :)

  72. I was thinking...... while I love seeing the 4 of them together as family, it just really does beg for comparisons. It brings out differences that I hope will eventually draw compliments & not negativity. I think especially if the event involves a walkabout or interactions with guests. Maybe it's just too new? Hopefully years of this will bring forth each couples unique identities. As well as the wonderful qualities of each of them individually .

  75. Meghan seems to like a straight cut in her coats. They are not designed with empire or princess seams and therefore are not "fitted" in the way that garments with those types of features are. I think all of her coats have fitted her properly. The style of the coats are a straight drop from the shoulder, not "fitted, " and her coats fit her in the shoulders properly. The middle of the contrasting band seemed to hit her waist, and sat in a place to give it an elegant look. Perhaps it all comes down to a matter of taste about how a straight coat should look? In my experience, when straight coats are worn too close to the body, they just look too small. I do wonder why there appeared to be some felt interfacing on the outside of the collar when it was worn turned up.

Very chic look today, she managed to effortlessly combine her natural style and keep it polished for an occasion as important as this. I did wonder about the collar being up showing the raw white felt, but that was a very minor thing, and possibly that’s one of Meghan's stylish quirky things she does to own her style. The beret hat was a great touch too - and again I’m imagining for someone who’s probably never worn formal hats before it’s a ruddy minefield to start wearing big elobarate concoctions, I’m sure she’ll start branching out and experimenting in the fullness of time.

I agree Mr D — as an American I can assume that much like me (where our similarities end ;)) Meghan has not had many occasions to require a hat. Heck - the only time I’ve ever worn a hat was to the Kentucky Derby. It’s just not something common at weddings, events etc here so the simple beret makes sense to me. She’ll have to ease into hats and fascinators.

  84. I was so deeply touched by the spoken reflection by Jaspreet Kaur, I transcribed them:
From the moment that you are more concerned with learning to love than to be loved,
Positive emotions of oceanic depth will engulf you.
And the moment that you are concerned with understanding than to always be understood,
That’s when you will find you truly begin to learn.
And the moment that we realize that our enemies are not physical flesh and blood, yet they are our thoughts,
    Peace will begin to conquer.
And the moment that we overcome those enemies rather than deflecting them onto others,
    Merriment will find you.
And the moment that you are more concerned about learning to listen
Rather than to always be heard
You will hear languages that you thought your mind could never fathom.

    Wise words indeed!

    1. Thank you Jo!:) Such Beautiful Words! It reminded me to go read The Prayer of St. Francis. Such important messages. During this difficult time in our history, it would be so helpful to sit quietly with such words each day. Imagine what change could occur in us all. :)

  85. I thought MM's coat is a very artful piece---there are little flairs away from the body at the hem, the end of the sleeves, and the turned-up collar (which is shown on the model) and they are pulled back into place with the waistband. i like that it floats a bit. And that snowy white hat fit her face perfectly. I doubt that harry and Will care what their girls wear, but for clothes watchers, this is a great day. i thought all the royals looked good. It would be a perfect time for a group photo. I love the huge hats on Anne and Camilla, and I thought Kate looked so pretty!

Could MM's earrings be a diamond version of the three stars?

And the Queen is just amazing! So pretty and smiling all the time! Andrew always looks grumpy but Camilla and Charles are usually very friendly looking, too. Wish I were English!!

  86. Meghan looked perfect and polished today! I love her non-fussy simple yet tres chic style. I loved the popped collar. Its those little touches that will make her fashion choices very fun to watch as she continues to develop her royal style.

When it comes to comparisons between Meghan and Kate, only the cold of heart could not see that the two ladies have a rapport and seem to like each other. It was nice to see Meghan's genuine smile when Kate looked back to check on her. I hope their bond strengthens and grows. Let Kate BE Kate and let Meghan BE Meghan! The World is large enough for us all!!

  87. I think she looks blooming lovely today- a real senior royal in the making! I love the size of this beret on her- great scale and I look forward to more of these in the future. Does anyone think she looks a bit like Princess Marie of Denmark in her style? Here's hoping we might also see Harry and Meghan at Windsor for Easter!!!

  88. Indeed she is. Each member of the venerable Firm brings his or her own gifts. The Queen so often has that look of total attention to the person before her. If Meghan takes cues from HM, she can never go wrong bringing her own enthusiasm and kindness to work.

  93. If her coats are always too big looking maybe that’s the way she likes her coats. Kind of like Kate and her love of buttons.

  97. I wonder if she had thoughts of May 19th as she walked down the aisle? What a surreal experience this must have been for her.

On the fashion front, I love the dress, bag and shoes. As far as the coat is concerned, I don't think it fit properly; the waist could have been snugger and more flattering and the collar (worn as she did today) was not ideal. In close ups, the fabric suggests that it was not meant to be seen.

I loved Meghan's hat, hair, dress, shoes, look -- but not a fan of the coat. Although the model shows it is intended to be worn with the collar popped, it looked wrong somehow -- like the collar had a slightly different color and wasn't supposed to be worn up. Perhaps it was a trick of the light. I also don't care for the fit. It looks like it should be snug around the waist, but it hung loosely. I'm okay with a loose coat, but I think it looks odd with that belted style. But I'm getting so excited for more and more royal events with Meghan!!!

  99. Just a side comment. Does anyone have a better smile then the Queen. I think it has only improved with age.
Makes me happy just looking at her.

  100. What an exciting (and probably nerve-wracking) day for her! I feel like this would be more intimidating than publicly attending church with the RF for the first time during Christmas at Sandringham. If she was nervous, she didn't look it- at least from the pictures, I haven't watched the videos. Well done, Meghan!

I think she looks so lovely and well put together. I love the simplicity of her dress and coat, she looks polished and I think the Navy and white are great together. I just have the tiniest quibble with her hat, which is strange because I'm American and have never worn a hat like this in my life.

I just feel like it lacks dimension and detail and without it, it resembles a plain white pancake beret that doesn't really add anything to her overall look. Oh well, plenty of other times to get it right!
