How Members of the Public Can Celebrate Harry and Meghan's "Fun and Joyful" Wedding & Diary Update!

Kensington Palace has announced further details on how the public can join in celebrating the big day on 19 May in a statement this morning. "Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle have said they want their Wedding Day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too. This wedding, like all weddings, will be a moment of fun and joy that will reflect the characters and values of the bride and groom."

Prince Harry and Ms Markle have invited 2,640 people into the grounds of Windsor Castle to watch the arrivals of the bride and groom, and their wedding guests at the chapel and to watch the carriage procession as it departs from the castle.

This number includes 1,200 members of the public from every corner of the United Kingdom who will be nominated to attend by nine regional Lord Lieutenant offices. The couple has asked that the people chosen are from a broad range of backgrounds and ages, including young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities.

200 people from charities and organisations close to Harry and Meghan, including those which the Prince serves as Patron will be invited. Other guests will include 100 pupils from two local schools, 610 Windsor Castle community members and 530 Members of the Royal Household and the Crown Estate.

Visit Windsor shared a video of the carriage procession route.

Less than 80 days until the big day! :)

Meghan to Attend Commonwealth Day Service... As previously reported by Camilla Tominey, Prince Harry and Meghan will join The Queen and senior members of the royal family for the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on Monday 12 March. Below, The Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry at the service in 2016.

More from the press release:

'Her Majesty The Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, accompanied by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, the Countess of Wessex, the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra will attend the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey on Commonwealth Day – Monday 12th March.
Organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society, the Commonwealth Service is the largest annual inter-faith gathering in the United Kingdom. The service will be broadcast live on BBC One and across BBC World Service, in celebration of Her Majesty's lifetime commitment to the Commonwealth.
Highlights of the service include a special musical performance by artist Liam Payne and a reflection by Dr Andrew Bastawrous, an eye surgeon who turned a smartphone into an examination tool which works to combat avoidable blindness in developing counties.
Following the service, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle will walk through Dean's Yard to attend a reception.'

This will be the most formal event Meghan has attended thus far. It marks Meghan's official introduction to the Commonwealth. The service is always an important date on the calendar and a celebration of Commonwealth links. We can expect to see Meghan in a hat for the service.

Charlotte, call me paranoid, but does that mean that no-one else will be allowed close to the chapel and the castle? I don´t mean this in a negative way, but my instincts tell me this is somehow related to security. 2600 people who are KNOWN and known BEFOREHAND (i.e. background-checks, etc) - who will be closest during "critical" moments like going into the chapel and then coming out, posing for photographers, means a lot less stress for security. I mean, it´s a nice idea to give "special" people "special" access to being able to watch without having to camp two days in advance to secure the best places, but you could also say, it´s a little bit "unfair" towards all of us royal fans who live outside of the UK.
I don´t know the castle grounds or the space in front of the chapel, so maybe there´s plenty of space left for plenty more royal fans. What do you think?

    1. I agree with you Eve. In terms of the people in the grounds of Windsor, from a security point of view it's important to know in advance. There will definitely be plenty of opportunities for members of the public to see them especially during the carriage procession.

    2. I agree with Eve, at first I was really excited but then I realized this just means that the public will not be able to access this area, they will only be able to see them during the carriage procession. So it's like a nice way of saying that the public is not allowed to get close to the venue. Can't wait to see Meghan on her big day!

    3. Security and control was my first thought and I think it's a wise approach.

    4. The Chapel is actually within the grounds of Windsor Castle and therefore not accessible to the public during events. At the Order of Garter service the public can apply for tickets to watch the procession from the grounds and there is extensive security to get it - I have been lucky enough to obtain a ticket to go 2 years ago. The selected people will be able to watch the wedding in the same way. The public will be able to stand on the streets in Windsor and watch the carriage procession - but they were never going to be able to see arrivals and departures, just as they can't for the Garter ceremony. Unless you wanted to go, or are familiar with Windsor castle, you wouldn't be aware of this information.

    7. It.s in the castle. The public wouldn.t get close anyway. So this is an improvement! I think they didn.t want the outside to look deserted.... it.s a scenographic move.

  2. What a great idea to invite a selection of Charities and selected from around the UK. I suppose this also allows a certain level of security within the Castle grounds, whilst allowing the general public access to the main route around Windsor itself.
Gripped as we are in such snowy conditions in the UK it's great to think this is now less than 80 days away!!

I was reading reports Charlotte that weather isn't going to be great on the day (although that may have been the DM just scaremonegering) - do you think the Chapel steps/entrance will have provision for bad weather? Sophie's and Charle's wedding sufffered from gusting winds blowing around, and I've noticed looking back there have been many other occassions the wind seems to whip around the area. I guess it maybe too expensive to build a temporary covered way like they used to do for major royal events in the 50's and 60's (i'm thinking a perspex canopy maybe useful for secruity too). I hope it will be a beautiful sunny day but who knows with the great British Weather!!

    1. Are they writing the weather will be bad already? The current weather conditions must be casuing the panic at the DM :)

Fingers crossed for a lovely sunny day, however I'm sure all possibilities will be considered.

    2. Mr D - Didn't Charles and Camilla use a side entrance for the blessing of their wedding ? I know they exited on the main steps, and as you mentioned, the wind did catch many off guard, the ladies were holding onto their hats for dear life ! If the weather was to be bad, maybe that could be their plan B ?
Charlotte, any updates on whether H&M have agreed to the wedding being televised ?

    3. Eve from Germany2 March 2018 at 18:08

Oh, Mr D, so the DM now knows the weather more than two months in advance, right? You had me laughing out loud! :-))) We have some pretty good weather forecasters here in Germany and any one of them worth their money always says that even 10 day weather forecasts are not much more than pure speculation!! Especially in Britain, where strong winds can change weather very quickly... So we can (and should) still keep our hopes up!!
Still, I agree, the wind on the steps of the Chapel seems to be a factor, so I wonder how they are going to deal with that... I remember when Danish Prince Joachim married his second wife, Marie, and a gush of strong wind nearly blew her veil away for good!! As if your royal wedding day wasn´t nerve-racking enough already..... ;-)))

    6. I did think the report (some weeks back now) was laughable, who believes anything in the DM to be fair!! let alone predicting the weather so far ahead when we are notoriously bad in the UK, but it did make me think it about considering the rain for example and being exposed to the elements. With 2 weddings now, and one to be autumnal, it may make sense to build something to cover both? I may just be focusing on detail too much and being too much of a giddy whatsit.

  3. Will this become the reconstruction of the Windsor title? In the three months they had been introduced to the public as an engaged couple, it is Windsor sentiment / time spent in their courtship, Windsor engagement portrait, Windsor wedding, and now topped with 500 guests invited from Windsor community. Chances are, they will emerge from St George’s chapel as, The Duke and Duchess of Windsor (of the millennium) on May 19, 2018. It keeps getting more and more interesting. I work some Saturdays from home. I make sure that I plan and my whole day will be glued to this event. It can’t arrive soon enough.

    1. Anything's possible of course, but I am leaning towards no. Given that Meghan is divorced and American, it could be seen as a bad joke.

    2. Hmmm.... Very Interesting Anon15! Very Interesting!... My only concern would be that Meghan would be haunted & pestered forever by taunting about The Ghost of "The American Divorcee"... Such an easy target or tagline.... :( But that's just me. I don't want to be a negative nelly! I'm sure they can overcome anything as a couple! Does she really want to begin her new life having to bury the old ghosts & work to redefine the title? Perhaps she's game? I haven't been really curious about what their titles will be, but now I will be! :)

    3. I hadn't connected the 'Windsor dots' until @Anon 15 pointed it out. It would certainly put old ghosts to bed. Just wonder, if Harry would want the legacy of the last Duchess of Windsor, hanging over the new Duchess of Windsor. Many are speculating it will either be Clarence or Sussex. Just 80 days until we know :-)

    4. I would hope that this has been considered. Windsor is so iconic and I'm not referring to Ms Wallis from my country. What an interesting discussion/topic for 20 or so historians, royal family members, etc. The Duke of Windsor died in 1972, and Harry was born in 1984 - 12 years after the fact. When you don't witness something first hand how and to what degree does it impact you?

      Delete
    5. I totally agree Elie. However, I would not be surprised if the Windsor title will simply go down in history and be retired.

      Delete
    6. My vote, (as if it really matters lol :) is that the Windsor title will be allowed to just die out & only remain as an unpleasant chapter of English History. But that's just me.

    7. Anon15, interesting thought for sure!! Im with you and Becca, I can really see it going either way!! I feel Meghan has it in her to take it on. If any newer royal has ever shown herself to be up to the task, it’s Meghan! Only 80 days... I can’t wait!! I say it makes sense to reinvent the Windsor dukedom. Meghan + Harry ❤️

    8. @Anon15 - while I think Windsor would be a lovely Dukedom and H&M definitely seem to have a strong connection to the location (so that seems extra sweet for them to have it), I kind of can't imagine that the queen will give out any title related to, or that might remind people of, her disgraced uncle. It seems like his abdication left a big scar/mark/impact on her and somehow I just can't see it.

@Elle - I don't think it's so much that it impacts Harry, but that it has such a bitter place in QEII's mind, and she's the one giving out the title. She may not want to saddle her grandson with a title that has such a negative connection for her. JMO though.

I'm not too big of a fan of Sussex though - mostly just because The Duchess of Sussex is a bit of a tongue twister to say out loud! - so I'd love something beside that one. Hopefully Charlotte will do a post about possible titles :) I'm pulling for the Duke and Duchess of Clarence and Avondale and Earl and Countess of Ross in Scotland.

Charlotte - if you do end up doing a post on possible titles, I'd also be interested in ideas about what Meghan's coat of arms might look like after marriage (for her half that is impaled with Harry's CoA).

    9. Another reason for the branding and highlight of Windsor may be for an entry into a new era in the near future. Some time back, I read that Prince Charles wants Windsor Castle to be the official palace when he becomes the king. According to the article, he wants to make Buckingham palace a museum.

If PH & MM will not be titled D&D of Windsor, Clarendon is better. Based on several bizarre comments from the very UK community, Clarendon will not give them any play with words for a bad joke as compared to Sussex (with all due respect to the people of Sussex).

By the time PG is in his twenties, the history of D&D of Windsor will be over 100 years old. PH is not heir as the Duke of Windsor (aka King Edward VIII was). How often are Prince Edward VII and / or Queen Victoria discussed on blogs by the current generation? Not much. In general, the history of D&D Windsor will be for future generation. PH is the uncle of the PG to them; the uncle of The Queen will be a distant history. May be the Duke and Duchess of Windsor will be redeemed in a new way. Based on comments from this thread, it may also be the wrong thing, but one, if the Windsors decide on that title, it will be after much consultation. By the way PH and Duke of Windsor share one of their names commonly.

    11. It is after reading Charlotte’s post- Admin3 March 2018 at 20:07, I realized almost all the comments on this thread are inclined to be correct that The Windsor title for the couple will be adding fuel to the fire which is spreading through nasty comments including the ones Charlotte had to deal with presently. It had taken over six years to continue picking up on Kate unfavorably and unreasonably on DM. It had subsided after the arrival of Meghan. In fact many commenters there admit, now that it is Meghan, it makes us appreciate Kate.

  5. Eve & Charlotte, I've been reading a bit about The Security Risks & Plans (E. has a good article that gets into Snipers etc.) They will also be doing things in advance to make sure "people that are known to the Security Organizations" (i.e. people who have had known obsessions with The Royal Family or that they have other known concerns about them) will not be allowed to travel to Windsor. (I have to re read the articles to refresh myself on the details). This article got into greater details than I was expecting. They also said that while publicizing the Carriage Route might seem dangerous, what they said they are trying to do is to also show & make sure any dangerous people realize just how well covered the route will be by all levels of Protection from Officers & Agents blending in with crowds to Snipers in all the buildings in town! They also mentioned that there had been recent Threats on the lives of Prince Harry & Prince George! It's at That Point that I stepped away from the article! If you happened to read when I shared my Family's History with The CIA..... I'm just finding the Threat Risk of This Wedding & Especially that Long Carriage Ride, is leaving me on edge! They also referenced different factions or groups in England that are upset about Someone "like" Meghan being "let" into The Royal Family & these groups & people are being watched carefully, as are the various groups members. This is going to be one Big "Bleep" Process to Protect Harry & Meghan!!! :( Charlotte, your news about the limited & screened numbers of people that will be allowed inside The Castle grounds proper, I find So Wise!

I read somewhere that the horse guards ride alongside the carriages so they block anyone aiming at the royals. And that's the reason some of the troops and police are facing the crowd on these big royal occasions. Unfortunately the royal family face a risk every time they interact with the public!

    1. @Allison in US - yes, this is what I believe too - their security is some of the best in the world and they will be taking every precaution to protect those (royals) in their charge.

I also feel like (and this is how I felt about the Obamas) that no secret service agent or royal protection officer is going to want to be the one where something happens on _their_ watch, so they will take all threats seriously and be very vigilant.

Since they seem to be friends anyway, I hope Meghan has had the chance to speak with the Obamas about how to just be able to relax and continue to live your life, even the knowledge that there are heightened threats against you. And, hopefully, the royals are informed of the threats against them so they also don't do things to put themselves at added risk (going out in secret without protection, etc.).

  7. There's a link in the Eonline article I read (there are several articles up now but I don't know how to post a link) It details that Harry & George have been the focus of recent Terrorist Threats. I didn't know? Evidently in Dec. a man was arrested for trying to work with Terrorists to attack Prince George's School. Also, In Sept. a woman was arrested within the School Grounds & was connected to a threat against little Prince George! :( Monarchs & their families have been the target of assassination attempts for generations. Queen Victoria had no less than 5 attempts on her life & of course Lord Mountbatton was assassinated on his boat in Ireland. So while these dangers come with the territory, it's heightened at this time surrounding The Wedding! I'm sure we'll all feel better once they are married & finished with a successful carriage ride!

I am also very curious to see her more formal dress and hat game. I really hope she tightens it up a bit - no messy buns, no too-long pants (although I am certain she'll wear a dress/coat), and no bulky no mushroom hat like at Christmas. I want perfection...not too much to ask, right? Ha :) I hope she'll look to someone like Victoria of Sweden for her more formal style/hat and tiara hair (although I just did a quick search and didn't find any pics of Victoria in hats that I like. Tiaras OMG, yes, but no interesting hats! Weird.).

    4. A hat---MM actually looked terrific in her hats before the engagement. I hope she goes back to those flattering styles. I think she would look better with her hair up (even "messy") when wearing hats for these types of events, in general. Would keep the hat from flattening her hair.

My favorite Kate dress was the Chanel she wore in Paris and I think something like that would look good on MM, too. I think I have seen so many great clothes on Kate that I'm getting harder to please. I LOVED her Commonwealth gray outfit last year, but now I'm finding fault. Good think they have such great personalities so the clothes can bore at times.

  9. Charlotte, I love both your blogs, and visit them ASAP everyday for updates on Meghan and Kate. I am extremely excited to see Meghan excepted into the Royal Family, also that she is being included into Royal events. As an American I have been going to U.K. news papers and magazines to read Royal news also. I have been going to comment sections to see local reactions and have become quite upset. Is Meghan liked across the U.K.? Is the Queen breaking protocol by inviting Meghan to the Commenwealth Service? Why is it such a big deal that Meghan is divorced? Three of the Queens children have been divorced. The future King and Queen are both divorcees. Am I reading minority comments in these papers? I hope Charlotte, as I do love Harry and Meghan! Thank you in advance for any opinions. Kathy from NJ

    1. Our newspapers are sensationalist Kathy! The normal opinion is that everyone is pleased that Harry is happy and found his own bride. The papers just want to sell copy. Meghan will earn her place in the countries' affections, just like Kate has and all the other people that have joined the royal family. Sophie Wessex had a particularly tough time in the papers, but she put her head down and worked through it and now is treated with respect. The papers do not reflect the vast majority of UK citizens in any shape or form. And comment makers in the Daily Mail are best ignored altogether! Hope that helps xx

Regarding what papers say and what "the public" think: I was in Britain during the time of the German reunification (1990). All the papers in Germany reported that the British people were not pleased at all and cited, amongst others, the Financial Times, as sources. I admit, I did not travel through the whole of the UK, but at least in the Greater Birmingham area, where I stayed at the time, people were extremely pleased about "the two Germanies" coming back together again!! I sometimes even got the impression that British people were even more pleased than us Germans! LOL!! Since then I take everything newspapers write with even more than a pinch of salt....

    5. Most decent people deride or ignore the comments and content in the Daily Mail. That paper is renowned for its racism - they attack famous black people like Stormzy, Lewis Hamilton - anyone black who has reached great success. Thus they attract the most revolting commenters, but they are not just British if you look at the names and locations. There are a lot of Americans and Canadians commenting too, and you can gauge from the content why they hate Meghan. When you look at Twitter and their reception when they visit, I would say they are immensely popular. It is a shame in this day and age (we have been instructed on this site not to be political despite this being entirely political) that hate like this exists, but unfortunately it does.

    6. Bluhare - I have noticed a staggering amount of negativity and, frankly, cruelty becoming progressively worse since the engagement announcement. The reaction to the Forum was so vitriolic, I seriously contemplated closing comments for a while. If it continues as it is, it's looking like an increasingly viable option. It's the first post where a substantially larger number of comments were deleted than published.

The general negative reaction to the Forum left me very surprised indeed. I know it wasn't perfect, but all four of them put thought and effort into something new: an event to inform the public about their Foundation. The list of accusations and insinuations leveled afterwards were beyond fiction. There was a very nasty selection of racist and classist comments. One of which suggested she would wear black make up in support of #MeToo. On 'Duchess Kate', there were so many comments comparing the two women in an unkind fashion, I couldn't keep up with it. There were several terribly unkind remarks left about Kate's speaking style; someone even went so far as to comment on her weight. William was accused of being an "arrogant flirt". I read them and thought, do people know they are talking about real human beings here?

It's been particularly awful on this blog with Meghan accused of the following (and not just by Anonymous trolls).
Being overbearing and pushing her own agenda. Arrogance. Pushiness. Behaving in an 'uppity' manner. Flirting with William. Bullying Kate. Dressing like a lap dancer. Lacking class. Being false. Haughtiness. Being a gold digger. Being a Prostitute.

Kathy asked above if Meghan is liked. Here are two of the mildest replies received:

1 - Meghan is not liked by the vast majority of people in the UK. I personally know of no one who thinks she is "fit" for our Royal family. The general consensus is that she is acting most of the time, and the simpering, oh the simpering. Just google "Megan Markle Men's Health" and you can see she is certainly not shy. Quite the reverse. She looks a mess all of the time and is bad mannered, the way she spoke over our Duchess of Cambridge on Wednesday was embarrassing. Kate and William do not like her, you can pick that up quite clearly from their demeanour. It is all such a shame but if she would just disappear back to the US I think the population of the UK would be quite happy. I dread to think what this creature will turn up in at the Commonwealth service, but so long as we are looking at MEghan, I expect she will be happy.

2 - Anon 17:11, I have a slightly different angle from Deb. Many people in my neck of the woods do not particularly like Meghan. Its not her looks or where she is from, they find her disengenuous and false. They are pleased that Harry has found someone he loves but do not like how Meghan has carried herself throughout their courtship. Some have argued that if her first marriage didn't make it due to distance, then did it work with Harry solely because of what he is rather than who he is as a person. Some feel Meghan is pushing herself forward, wanting the limelight. This is how I have found some people, but not all. Hope this heplps to answer some of your questions.'

We're in an incredibly shocking situation where the more Meghan works and the more interest she shows in her role, the more she's guaranteed to be lambasted at every turn. I've had comments from people refusing to believe she's attending the Commonwealth Service and suggestions she should arrive via a side entrance.

I honestly despair; this is a truly an ugly time in royal watching.

    12. Wow Charlotte – on top of juggling two outstanding blogs, the kind of unpleasant time you have to face and the terrible negativity you have to experience is awful. It is very understandable if you give the blog a pause, post Meghan’s calendar and continue with the upkeep of the writing as events move on. It is practical for your own sanity. At the same time, haters find fulfillment and joy when the good fails; the least they deserve is empowerment of their nasty mind. Their spirit (the worst ones) is like the demon’s mentality. I wish you designate someone you trust to filter out the worst ones and pass you the rest for your approval. The comment sections on these blogs are very important for several reasons. The MOST IMPORTANT PRIORITY is not to miss out on YOUR POSTS ON BOTH BLOGS.

At this point, you may want to consider managing the blogs with assistant/s (A close family member and/or friend). Your DKB blog had built a strong community, which some of the members also post on MAM. MAM has added some wonderful commenters. Wonderful commenters doesn’t necessarily mean always agreeable positively, rather people who make everyone’s time worthwhile in their thoughts and reasonable intention, and agree to disagree when necessary, share information and so on. Between the two blogs and the crystal clear integrity and outstanding success you have attained as the founder, moderator and administrator of these two blogs, the future will outshine the clogged spirit of the nasty commenters. In a way the DKB and MAM blogs must have been stocked, harassed and bullied then, without the community’s knowledge. Chances are you will work on your own. In that case, it will change your strategy and rules.

As your blogs are unique, it had also taken time, patience, skill and perseverance invested on both blogs by you, behind the scene for the visible result and continuity. I hope you consider updating rules in reflection of the current circumstances. These may include blocking IP addresses; blocking nasty commenters automatically (I am talking about the worst ones which CAN NOT be posted). Some new arrivals may not be familiar and attempt to post the way it is done on other blogs. If there is anything any members of this community can do, please let us know. The extremists have to be looked at a stumbling block. I am sure many commenters including myself appreciate the fact that you shared the current state of the blogs’ commenters sections. I hope you will continue to do that. You do deserve a vacation before it gets too busy too soon. My sincere best regards, hopes and wishes are with you.

    13. Oh Charlotte! I just read your long comment & I'm heartbroken! For you, for Meghan & The Royal Family, for the UK & the Commonwealth & for all of us. :( I know myself, that I deleted 2 of my own posts after the Forum (which I Loved!) because once I read them as posted, I realized that they sounded harsh & not at all like what I had meant to say! (I was addressing my new found realization that there may be some adjustment time as Meghan hits the ground running after The Wedding) which is funny, because Kate had so much time to adjust, that it wasn't an issue of her moving too fast, rather some people thought she was moving too slow. Meghan, on the other hand, is marrying a Full Time Royal & is older & is bringing a wealth of experience along with her into her new position & role! I only that day realized, that her excitement & enthusiasm might bump up against the usual adjustments & learning curves found in any new job, role or country. I just didn't express myself very well. I hope this time I did better? That said, I really hope The Comment Section doesn't have to be shut down, but I also empathize with how all this toxicity is infringing on you & your life! You didn't ask for this! It's all so sad! :( Which brings me to a Big "Thank you" for not only creating these Amazing Blogs, but for All The Hard Work that you do, have done & the mind boggling position you find yourself in now, as you continue to strive to honor the integrity of your Blogs! I do not envy you That job!
      Hugs,

    14. Reading about the ridiculous critisism Meghan and Kate receive makes me really really sad.All this hate and the lack of respect that many people seem to have leave me speechless-where will all this lead to?Come on,we are all humans, nobody is nor should be perfect-so let‘s encourage each other instead of spreading such negativity.Charlotte, thank you for your patience -I truly hope that positive voices like yours will be louder than those of all the haters out there.

    15. Charlotte, I can only imagine the despicable comments you have had to read and moderate. It is indeed an ugly time for royal watching and I would add an ugly time in general on social media. At this point, if I had a blog on Kate, Meghan, or on anything, I would likely keep the commenting closed. While social media has some positives, there are far more negatives. So many commenting on Facebook, Twitter, and blogs feel free to criticize, shame, disrespect, threaten, bully, and taunt others over and over. There is less kindness and empathy toward others and much more hatred and prejudice. This is one reason why I refuse to use Facebook or Twitter, and in all honesty, it is also why I rarely comment on blogs.
I am the same age as Kate and Meghan, and actually, my 36th birthday is tomorrow (the 4th). I am considered to be an "old millenial" or part of the "Oregon Trail" generation, based on the year of my birth. I fully remember a world without social media and sometimes I long for those days again. As a mental health professional, I am deeply concerned that social media has become a platform for bullying and hate-filled rhetoric. People feel they can say whatever they want, regardless of how it might affect someone else. And the level of criticism thrown at others (whether it is a famous individual or a peer at school) is unconscionable. We need to be kinder, compassionate, accepting, open-minded, empathetic, and affirming towards each other. We need to embrace others for who they are and NOT criticize them into changing or telling them they should do this or be that. Perhaps I have become disillusioned with humanity over the last few years, but I'm just sick and tired of so much hatred, racism, prejudice, and criticism.

    19. Charlotte, I appreciate that you let us in your viewing window of what you experience as a blogger. I think we need to be aware of the fact it's not an easy journey. It's so sad there are so many unkind people who hide behind cyberspace. We just do not know the Royals except for periodic snapshots into their public agendas. Respect and kindness for others goes a long way. Thank you Charlotte for your hard work on both blogs that are always presented with class. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism as long as it is not demeaning.

    20. Virginia, same age here and I believe the smartphone will bring the end of civilization. :) I recognize the value in being able to connect instantly to mobilize for good purposes, to connect with your family, to use telemedicine, to publicize injustices like abuse of transgender children, and so on. But the time spent on social media and the time spent by children and young adults on social media is a waste. I remember when you could come home and not have to deal with school until the next day! Now children are followed by tweets and chats and messages on a 24-hour basis. The easily given hateful comments by anyone with a phone seem to just swirl around us. I work at home as a freelancer medical editor and one of my clients feels she should be able to reach me at any time. She is angered when she calls and I don't answer the phone. She even sent me a smartphone so she could call at any time---I sometimes put the phone outside. People need to turn off and calm down.

    21. I would challenge and encourage commenters to write a comment containing 10 affirming statements about Kate and Meghan (on each respective blog) that are about the person and their character, and not about their appearance or style. More importantly, I would encourage everyone to do the same thing for a friend or family member. Offer words of kindness and affirmation in a private message, a voicemail, a phone call, a card or letter, or in a face-to-face conversation.

    22. ‘’I read them and thought, do people know they are talking about real human beings here?’’

In short I would have to say - no. People use the anonymity of the Internet to ‘’say’’ things they would never dream of even thinking in real life. And I have come to the conclusion that the vast majority of even ‘’fans’’ regards the royals as movie characters and not real life people. Sad world we live in.

    23. I do believe that vast majority of people are decent human beings who simply do not comment, but there are always haters and anti-monarchists who will wait for every article on royals and leave very negative comments. It’s wonderful that vile people can not comment here, this should drive them mad. Charlotte, thank you for all the hard work.

    24. I feel quite stunned and appalled. Especially because I read that "black make up" comment on twitter and it belongs to one of the biggest stan of another young royal. So it means either her and her follower is regularly visiting and leaving her "footprints" here.

I think you should seriously consider publishing comments with names, not that it would solve all the problems, but would make these people pick a name, you could be used to those and you wouldn't have to read through tons of rubbish every time. Although anybody can write a comment with names too (myself included) that others find intrusive or OTT but worth a try. At this point, the blog has nothing to lose.

Also, Anon is right, those who left such comments about Meghan would feel they were right if the comment section was closed. Especially, it would be such a waste with these exciting times ahead...

    27. Dear Charlotte

I am so very sorry for the hurtful attitudes you must sift through to manage this blog. I am a long time reader but have only recently gathered up the courage to comment on occasion. Social media can be such a blessing, but a real curse as well, as others have pointed out. Words are powerful and lasting. The anonymity of typing a comment can somehow make people forget that, and wounds can be so long lasting. There have always been people to desire to tear down instead of to build, and this platform does not always bring out the best.

Your writing, your perspective, your joy about your subject, and the depth which you present are a joy. I pray your heart sees the good you bring. I pray we all as commentators seek to make your job easier and not harder, and I pray those who are responding with cruelty realize that there are better things to do with your life than to be angry and throw that around for others to deal with. We will not all be on board with every event/issue/appearance all the time, but hate and anger should never rule our hearts and words.

Hugs of encouragement sent your way!

    28. wow.

I'm truly saddened by all this Charlotte. I despair sometimes of what our society is becoming and how easily people feel it's their right to make such horrible comments whilst hidden behind an anonymous online voice. I just don't understand it. Really I don't.

I don't know how you cope, so a big Thank you for filtering the worse of it out for us here, I had no idea the awesome work you do would attract the same sort of vitriol from people who comment on the likes of DM and Social Media. It's almost as if people are going out of their way to find outlets like this blog and still pour hatred and negativity out. It is indeed a very sad time.
I echo the many who have commented above who have shown their disapproval and saddness.

I can only offer my continued support to you and the wonderful people on here that comment regularly to keep the discussion constructive, supportive and challenging without feeling the need for this kind of abhorrent behaviour.

I won't let them take away my giddiness for Meghan (or Catherine), this wonderful couple or this blog. I simply won't. I still believe the majority of the UK and the world in general are happy for Meghan and Harry and they will be a much needed force for good and have a positive impact on whatever they focus on here in the UK or the Commonwealth.

Sadly, I'm suspecting more wine will be needed though in the next few months.

    30. There is more to play here then Meghan's skin color and profession. She's a foreigner, an American, marrying into a high profile, royal family. A family supported by the UK and Commonwealth. Had Harry picked a biracial actress from any of those lands I don't think the reaction would be as intense. I can see why folks might be upset about an American representing their culture. And I can see why they might resent her living an extravagant lifestyle as the royals do.

It really puts the spotlight on what is royalty. There's nothing special about Meghan, except Harry likes her and wants to marry her. I would be very surprised if she were to have any type of independent outreach - she will most likely be by Harry's side as he works for the Crown.

I'm not surprised by the reaction, I will be curious to see if this marriage works against the idea of royalty, or strengthens it.

    31. Virginia, Happy Birthday & I love your suggestion about us all writing positive affirmations about Kate on DKB & Meghan on MAM! Wonderful Idea! This may seem silly, but my oldest is 36 & I was wondering if "The Oregon Trail" was a reference to how it was a big deal to study that in school back in gradeschool? My kids did too & I think there was a game or something that went along with it? Also, we still talk about how when the older kids' friends called, the house phone still rang! As a parent who raised kids pre & post cell phones, I have to say it was like day & night! With the older ones, having the house phone as the only means for communication really helped parenting. As a Mom I had a sense of what was going on in my kids' lives. Were they happy chatting away, was the phone silent (indicating a potential problem with friends?) We also had direct contact with the friends (as we answered the phone & all, & we had a tight bond with the other parents, as we had to keep in touch about pick up times after play dates or athletic events etc. Lots of open communication. By the time our last child was in HS we didn't know 1/2 of his friends & forget about the parents! If we didn't meet the parents in the stands of athletic games or other events, we often never met them at all! When kids were over, they'd use their cell to call for a ride or whatever & then they'd disappear out the door! So incredibly different that the earlier way. Those extra insights etc, from the days of raising our kids your age, really made a difference. Also, as we sat down for our family dinners each night, no matter how many times the house phone would ring, it was a common household rule for many families that no one could answer the phone during dinner! Also, remember "busy signals" before "call waiting" or "voicemail" came along? All those things built in a kind of buffer between the family & the outside world. I miss those days in many ways! I do not envy my children raising our grandchildren during these days. I watch & each of my kids works really hard to have solid family traditions etc. I do think the fact that your age group spanned both lifestyles, does enable you to adapt in easier ways than my peers do. We've been here for all the change, but we've been on the other end of it. Well now I'm sounding like a dinosaur! :) Ha! lol

    32. Credit should be given when it is due, as in what makes a person special or what makes the observer conclude “there is nothing special about another person”.

Meghan is media savvy, thinks on her toes, is well disposed with a skill in diplomacy, has that maternal or big sister protective instinct to spin matters towards the positive for whom she loves. She was also being honest in conclusion by admitting that the diversity among them is the inclusion of the belief to “push the envelope” (most likely a phrase which described herself).

She also happens to come from a society which has a history of racial discrimination. She stood on her own, defending her very identity, embracing both of her parents’ races. When it came to her choices of friendship, she had been unapologetic, mingled with what she found suitable for her choice. For doors which resisted her entry to success, she kept up with the challenge. When she did arrive at the point of success, she showed the capability of consistency, discipline and her own personal enrichment, shared her creative qualities, travels, experiences and the zest for life through her Tig blogs. Indeed she holds a a very good resume of a tasted character, perseverance, intelligence, optimism and maturity as she joins the BRF.

It is not everybody who is ambitious, works towards it, continually prepare to meet opportunity, be emphatic about the rights of others, live, love, adjust to the circumstance and be happy to welcome destiny. Some of these are a combination of innate, acquired, achieved as well as habitual attributes. You can’t quite say “Meghan is not special”. She may not be rare or very special, but taking into account of her life, she is special.

One hesitation I have is if she rushes new controversial topics into the new role as a new comer, she will only adversely affect the cause which had been dear to her heart even before her teen years. The “me too” movement is going through the courts and has not crystallized yet. While she was serious about women issues 25 years ago ( at a tender age of 11 years old), some of “me too” movement actresses were looking the other way about harassment. It had been a long time (since the then Judge Clarence Thomas vs Anita Hill court case) that HR departments hand out sexual harassment rules to new employees. The “me too movement” is not the right one for her to take yet. She had already built credit to her name by having done some good.

This is a lady who is also exemplary by having a healthy self-esteem as a woman, and who also understands women’s issues globally. Please do not assume that she will just be by Harry’s side as he works for the Crown. Time will tale, then it will be because of one choice she made over another. Let us hope in all this, the love from her side is genuine.

    37. It is interesting, I was thinking the opposite ( may be not quite the opposite, but the steps towards the end result you mentioned) As in, just like she said preferable to work with smaller grass root organizations, avoiding the red tape, she may need a series of accomplishments, show some positive outcome in the UK. It seems she had been getting familiar behind the scenes as she put it. In her case, with the doubt and unfounded criticism against her, the reality will be to show some tangible results within the UK community in reasonable time. It may take a year or two, to see at least something underway. Still, as you said, “looking at the long game” is very important, and even a motivational journey towards a goal.

    38. Moxie, I agree that being American plays into it a lot in Britain. But it doesn't play into it in the US. And being jingoistic is one thing, but being downright hateful and racist and posting the most disgusting things is another.

I can actually see the point about her being American. But have you read some of the stuff that's been posted? It's disgusting and has absolutely nothing to do with who she is or what she's about.

    39. I think there are two different things. One is the awful comments left on the internet, by , if I understand you right Bluehare mostly posters from the US, and another is public opinion in the UK. It is clear those disgusting comments are not public opinion. But Moxie has a point about her nationality and culture. And I agree with you Moxie, that a marriage in the RF is not only a private affair of two individuals that love each other. The British will be represented by Meghan, thus it is natural they voice their opinion. Only I cannot gather what that opinion is? Comments here and elsewhere are not representative. I seem to remember there are sometimes opinion polls on the RF... Perhaps there will be another and we will know more precisely how popular Meghan is.

      Delete
    40. Anon15 - I'm comfortable with my opinion and assessment. Meghan excels at self-promotion, which should not be confused with humanitarianism. It's the difference between Kim Kardashian and Angelina Jolie. A blog to promote lifestyle and products? You mean like Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP? Is that because Meghan is altruistic or was paid for lifestyle product placement? A week in Rawanda and a week in India - does not a lifetime of humanitarianism make. Her blog showed a different lifestyle. A letter when she was 11 and a speech when she was in her 30's which are now used to promote herself. But that's all there is, save for the $15,000 she raised and made sure there was press there to record. For a woman who reportedly made $50,000 per episode as an actress - that sum is not remarkable.

Hi Bluhare - don't read the comment sections - if what you are saying is white people in America are horrible racists, I believe you. What I am really trying to wrap my head around is the fact that Americans can have really terrible reputations abroad as pushy loudmouths. Whether you are an actress or not, Americans tend to walk around on this earth entitled. And it's not appreciated. We have a loudmouth President - and it's not appreciated.

I'm trying to anticipate how this American actress who is opinionated and literally "entitled" is going to be received by the UK and Commonwealth populations. This isn't famous Oscar winning actress Grace Kelly wooed by a Prince to bring attention to his small principality - this is unknown Mary Donaldson being brought from another land because Frederick fancies her. From what I understand - Mary did not have an easy go of it because she was a foreigner.

Again, it's interesting that folks think Meghan is going to have an impact, an independent voice, when really, the royals need to stay apolitical. Time will tell.

    41. Florida Moxie,
It is an extreme comparison to make, between Meghan, and Kim Kardashian who lives for selfies (wrote a book about it), alerts photographers for her every move, and self-promotes in every medium possible w/o much education, and no talent. In early November, I have commented that Meghan compared to Angelina Jolly, is a new comer to the “humanitarian” commitment, in longevity and involvement. It is undeniable fact that Meghan wrote that letter to Proctor and Gamble, at age 11; advocacy had been ingrained in her conscience. Struggling artists can’t help but adapt the skill of self-promotion. To that end, it goes with the profession. I have gone through some of her interviews; the most memorable one was solo, with Larry King. In this forum, once again, her skill in diplomatic speak was evident. To present herself weaving through her accomplishments during the forum interview is no less than someone who is going through a panel job interview by HR and management corporate professionals. To mention her travels, the longevity of her advocacy, the opinion of her thoughts was not necessarily self-promotion. It is confidence meets opportunity; why pass up the chance? In general self-promotion is a part of capitalist-commercial system. The more the melting pot goes on, the more people pick up on the “secret” skill. In many other cultures humility and self-depreciation can be the appreciated path. Religious societies and people also have that tendency. You know how much self-promotion is a part of American culture, and it works positively. Not the kind of self-obsessed self-promotion of the Kim K clan which also worked for its own audience. They are in realty TV, which had flourished them in millions; as long as there is audience for it, they accommodate their life style in extension to the reality drama of their lives.

Meghan once said, “I did not want to be pigeon holed as “the actress” category. It had been clear she knew what she wanted, managed through the challenge to curve out something for herself. Also, blogs don’t happen in a vacuum; she had to be engaging, resourcefully informative, invest time on it and what not. If that dedication covered some costs for her time in products, why not? People who visited her blogs may be needed those products. To raise $15,000.00 in fund raising added to her experience. For the beneficiaries, when converted to their local currency, or for World Vision, it must have meant something. Beyond that, she brought the children’s paintings, a wise move, as well as may planted some seeds in the attendees conscience the existence and needs of such places and people ( granted it is for a good purpose / sometimes NGOs and the media acquaint themselves to certain parts of the world beyond charity). Is Kate just by the side of William while he works for the Crown? Well, she has her patronages, interest and speeches too, as well as team work with him. It can be expected similar process for Harry and Meghan too.

    43. Anon15 - It can help to step back and realize that the very idea of royalty is a tenuous one and a Commonwealth is not an automatic. When the Queen passes the institution will be challenged from all sides. And that the institution is made up of an American actress with no connection/experience to the cultures it represents it may have an impact on how it is viewed. On the other hand, if this actress is successful in marketing the economies of those cultures - through raising awareness of goods and services (clothing, travel, products) - then there is a tangible benefit that can be pointed to. But, this is not humanitarianism. This is capitalism. It isn't about rights or preserving culture, it's about profit. Can she specifically support non-white, female businesses and be lauded for it? Sure. Sounds like a great way to live as she jets around with Harry enjoying life.

      Delete
    44. Moxie, I totally agree with you.As I am not an American I won't rub it in, but the feelings the rest of the word have about the US are indeed mixed, to say the last. And inevitably they influence the way Meghan is perceived, and she is a very typical American.

      Delete
    45. Moxie, you said "nothing is special about Meghan?" Define "being special". According to who? To you?
To me? To the kids she saw in Rwanda? To Harry?
So I will tell you what I think is special. For the very same reasons you said she is not special I say those very same reasons make her special. Writing a letter at the age of 11, yes age 11- for the issues she believed in-check(that's special). Going to Rwanda even once in a lifetime for humanitarian causes(that's special). Going to India for female causes even once in a lifetime(that's special). Speaking at UN for women rights even once in a lifetime that's special)
So she is not Angelina Jolie, and she should not be. And the Kim Kardashian reference, I interpreted that as an insult. I don't think Prince Charles would have married Camilla and Prince William not Catherine, if they are supposed to marry the "Angelina Jolies".
Harry saw those things and so much more about Meghan to believe that she could do the "job". In the engagement interview Harry indicated he fell in love with her" not just "like" her to marry her as you said....
So yes I completely disagree with your perception on Meghan's achievements - humanitarian or otherwise.

    46. There is a broadly well perceived concept, if a person is good at making herself/ himself marketable and promotible in an effective way, that same person will be good at promoting the company. There is also the reality that, profit is like the horse before the cart in its support to humanitarian endeavor. As the churches can use support from the alms, tidings, and /or services, same idea is for humanitarian involvement. Money needs to be generated, or service is done through volunteerism; she had done that also. To a smaller degree, thrived in promoting her own Tig blog if that can be a model for some business, was face of World Vision, UN Women advocate, a panelist and representative for sex trafficking victims, and openly shared women’s dilemma in countries like India. Time magazine has a big circulation; her opinion expressed in that publication cannot be underestimated in alerting awareness.

By the way, I just read that she was baptized privately on Tuesday and confirmed to The Anglican Church. That is one interesting step. At this point, we both agree that, time will tell.

      Delete
    47. When you look at success in terms of 1) self promotion - Kim Kardashian excels at that endeavor 2) product endorsement - Gwyneth Paltrow excels at that endeavor 3) humanitarianism - Angelina Jolie excels at the endeavor. Of those three, two are award winning actresses - Oscar winners no less. But you know who is the most successful at all three? Oprah Winfrey. And you know something else interesting about these four women? They didn't need a marriage to accomplish it.

Anon15 - I don't think Americans going into other countries like India and criticizing the culture in an American publication is as society changing as one might think. Do you think the India diplomats appreciated it? Do you think anyone in India read it? There is an unfortunate "hero complex" that Americans seem to have about "saving the world", as if we have no problems here in America to address. An actress from America telling people what to do in other countries is not the diplomatic coup some folks imagine. Time magazine has a circulation of 3 million or so - mostly Americans. India is a country of 1.3 billion. How did Meghan lead in her own community? No one knows if she did - she was busy jetting around, writing her lifestyle blog and enjoying life. She traveled to foreign countries to be "seen" doing humanitarianism. That is what we know about her.

Harry likes her and may they have a happy marriage. But how that affects the royals standing in the world remains to be seen.

    48. Harry said he loves her not just like her, how about you correct that part Moxie.

    49. Moxie,
I look forward to the next time this topic comes up, and that we will both have the time to discuss it. If and when that time comes up, my question to you will be, please give an example in what way/s Meghan promotes herself. May be when we break down different categories of "self promotion", we will reach a sensible conclusion. One reality I understand, is that, Kim K and Meghan M are not comparable in their ways of self-promotion. I am glad you kept up with the thread which the most part you did not, especially when you were in Maryland ( may be the timing was convenient for you). By the way many other people also label MM a self promoter. Because that remark had been coming from people other than USA, I was surprised you, as an American found MM as a self promoter.

  16. Meghan will need her own Miliner to create hats with her taste in mind. Charlotte, do all the ladies from the royal household need to wear matching coats and dress? If so, I don't think there is enough time for a designer to create something special for MM to wear. what do you think?

  20. Charlotte, I wonder if the free-flowing hateful comments are loosened by the other types of celebrities available for comment. We have the Kardashians shoved in our face everyday and I was just about to add an ugly comment about them! We in the US are so free to say what we want from grade school (bullying, etc) up to politicians (well deserved :). I guess the reasons people spend time being so hateful is because they are jealous---of MM's appearance, her wealth, her good fortune that is well deserved. I took a little trip back to Feb 11, 2014, on your blog, when Kate wore that gorgeous "inky" gown and a hunk of the Queen's diamonds. I was not reading posts then and just enjoyed seeing the images. Some of the posters said terrible things about Kate, particularly her messy hair. :)

I live in a rural part of Texas and it is filled with stupid hateful people. Because they belong to a local church, they can run around with Confederate flags and refer to anyone who is not like them in very sickening terms.

It must be very discouraging and time consuming to read and delete these posts. Would it be easier to have a closed group, where we have to log in based on an email address? Some people must be hunting for "Meghan Markle" and thereby find your blog---hopefully they are not any of your regulars.

    1. Interesting thought Allison. The Blog Posts could be available for all to see, but the comment section could require a login. Charlotte might recognize posters to allow them to login to start & then as new ones came along, she could use her judgment & based on what they post, she would know if they should have their login revoked or not? Maybe this could be an option just during this particularly difficult time? Though, it's Charlotte's Blog & of course she'll know & decide what's best! xo

    2. Allison - It is a good idea to sign in with some ID like e-mail. By now having two blogs, two sets of full time working couples and some serious combat to tackle on screening comments, Charlotte may come up with some solution.

I agree that it is Charlotte's blog, and the decision is up to her.

  22. I keep thinking about this all. I know some people are totally against having a monarchy, and I can understand that. I think at this point it is "fun" (like Harry said, the "magic") and it helps unify people and reward persons and places for good work.

As far as being a biracial princess, being biracial is what gives MM her beauty. Everyone is a tossup of what their genes produce---she would be physically not as pretty if she were not biracial, although her mother and her half-sister are very good looking and they are not identified as biracial. To me, it is all just one of many features---hair color, eye color, skin color, body shape, facial features, etc. I didn't know her mom was African american for some time. So people need to realize that she is not quite special despite being biracial, but that she is very special because she is biracial. And it's a terrible term because we are evolving to the point that everyone will be a shade. Should we register according to our DNA---32% Asian, 12% Latino (broken down into all the various ethnic groups in the world), 15% Caucasian, etc.

Even the clothes comments seem a bit harsh. I think MM's outfit was beautiful but there are many other outfits that would also have worked. She wore what she was comfortable in, so the shoes and rings are also OK. If she dressed like Kate, people would say that she is copying Kate. Or mimicking Kate.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Meghan and Kate are 2 different people, it's clear each woman has her own style of dressing. There are also many outfits that could have worked for Kate for the forum and she chose to wear that one, which is fine. The problem with comparing these 2 dresses comes to this for me- Meghan's outfit may have been sleeveless, I don't see anything wrong with that, but it was past her knees so she was modest. Kate had sleeves but her dress was not past her knees compared to Meghan's. I thought Kate looked okay as well. So my point is if we really want to pick apart Meghan's outfit, then we apply the same standards to Kate, would Kate's dress still be considered appropriate for the occasion?

Their foundation is already, in its infancy, accomplishing so much for so many. Think of what they will contribute in the coming years. To discuss someone's speaking style, is to miss the entire point. They all conducted themselves in a professional, yet relatable manner. 26. So Happy Thoughts...

The Commonwealth Day Ceremony - some ideas/suggestions. I think for one of her first formal events she might turn to some trusted designers to help her set the right tone. Given it might still be too cold for just a dress at this stage ( am I truly english and obsessing about the weather constantly? lol) I've thought about a warmer look/coat or thick /textured fabric. Of course I'm probably way off but it's killed some time away from all the haters

So starting with her old friend Roland Mouret - maybe even a a bespoke version of this suit -
https://www.net-a-porter.com/gb/en/product/996156/Roland_Mouret/kirkham-cotton-blend-boucle-tweed-jacket - zipped up looks a good look for Meghan

She's already worn Jason Wu so perhaps this red coat (maybe a little scene stealing for her neutral palette so far) https://www.net-a-porter.com/gb/en/product/930599/jason_wu/wool-blend-felt-coat

Maroon/Aubergine seems to be cropping up alot within her choices so far - so maybe this Tweed Coat with the maroon dress underneath she wore at Invictus Games (by Aritza) or her velvet dress she wore at christmas https://www.harrods.com/en-gb/etro/contrast-trim-tweed-coat-p000000000005849601?bcid=W010010010000

    4. Mr. D from UK,
You have made some interesting choices for Meghan.
Link # 1. It may fit for a visit to STEM for girls (International Women’s Day / March 8 engagement).
Link # 2. Whenever they have a diplomatic state visit to Commonwealth Countries, that red coat will be beautiful. I am not sure if she should wear something so bright especially in the company of the queen yet, until she warms up as an official member in action.

It seems at least 75% of Commonwealth nations have red on their flags. It is a chosen color, and wise selection on your part. By the way, The Commonwealth logo color looks gold / yellow.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Commonwealth_of_Nations

Link # 3. Etro Contrast Trim Tweed Coat
That coat looks like a statement multi-color material with contrast, and stands out uniquely on its own. I think, you chose well for The Commonwealth on the 12th of March. The color may not outshine the rest of the family members especially being the new kid in town. It may agreeably work well on Meghan, will be easier to accessorize (if one color hat doesn’t work out, try another with it), it passes for gracing an important event, with the edges in contrast, it is edgy itself without looking out of touch. I am curious what shape of a hat you can find for it?

      Delete
    5. The coat you selected inspired me, and I ended up getting into the world of hats before I knew it. I wonder if women who wear hats by custom, start their image planning from the hat and work the rest of the clothes around it. It is a world all on its own; the shape, proportion, style, size, event and on and on. I put the following link to show the closest color shade to the pink of the coat.

      https://i.pinimg.com/originals/86/17/04/861704bbba1dad853fc4ed0147739166.jpg

To match the checkered edges leaves more room for a stylish effect though. You may be interested to choose from the black and white hats, or find something else. There is a black and white hound tooth straw with wide brim to far right as you scroll down (after you open the following link).

      https://www.pinterest.com/pin/472737292127383708

I wonder how and what the milliners consult their clients. Meghan’s Christmas hat was almost $5,000.00 according to some sources. That was a Philip Treacy. I think once they make a name, trust is placed on them to do the “right thing”.

Many of the hats either cover the upper feature, or have to go slanted for partial &profile style, or are fascinators.

  28. I was just puttering around on you tube & decided to watch any of the past interviews of Meghan's. I watched a bunch that surrounded her style as Rachel Zane vs her own style, The "Tig" (which I never had a chance to read) & her views on Fashion, The Fashion Industry & her Activism. It was Fascinating. Then I circled back around & watched H&M's Engagement interview & The Forum. I felt like I had a much more well rounded sense of Meghan than just the recent bits & pieces I only knew so far that were shared here during their dating & once they got engaged.
Some things that stood out to me were how well connected she was with The Fashion Industry. She was on several Style Shows in New York, as she was in town to attend NY Fashion Week. She spoke about attending other Fashion Weeks around the world, as well. She spoke of all sorts of Designers she knew & had working relationships with & ones she had personal friendships with, such as Roland Mouret. Some of you who know more about her might have heard the story of how they met? She was in an elevator at a hotel with this man in a robe & he said he'd like to dress her. She was like excuse me? Then he introduced himself & they've been close friends ever since. She even has worn many of his designs. (wedding dress guess anyone?). She also spoke of all that she had learned about fashion in the beginning of playing "Rachel Zane", about wearing "Simple Chic Classic" looks & the unbelievable importance of Tailoring! She was agreeing in one interview that "Perfect Tailoring Was Everything!" They spoke about how often people think they can wear designer or "off the runway" & they can't because the models are so long & tall. That Everything Must Be Tailored Perfectly! (that made me cock my head hmmm?) I did notice that every interview (& some they spoke about how cold & nasty the weather was outside) that she was always wearing something sleeveless! She wore lovely dresses or ensembles, including sheath dresses, a beautiful lace sheath dress, & several other ensembles. She spoke about her love for her Rachel Zane wardrobe & how she wished she could take them home or borrow them, especially this one Tom Ford $5000 suede skirt that she loved. She spoke about wearing a black suede number by Ralph Lauren to Wimbledon, as she was attending an event for the designer afterwards & it started raining & she was so concerned about Serena who was playing, but Serena's niece & friend who were sitting with them were like "Meghan, we've got to get inside! Your Suede!" :) It was generally nice to hear all of these stories & opinions. I had no idea she was so widely connected with celebrities & designers etc. (as good friends, not just acquaintances). She did speak about her own private style & she often referenced herself as a California Chic gal, but said that she had been influenced by Rachel Zane & that she was more "Classic Chic" than she had been before the role. Hmmmm, what else? She did speak about her activism, tho not as much as I would have guessed, but she did work that into most of the style interviews I saw & shared or brought "fashion items with a conscious", like items that were made to by or to benefit women in other countries. It was all very interesting to me. Just thought I'd share it with any of you who maybe hadn't known much about Meghan before now, like me. :)

I enjoyed being informed from your post. By now, I have gotten used to your "standard" way of writing which changed recently in response to enquiries. Reversing with flexibility shows a maturely agreeable as well as innocent side of you. Sometimes we don't realize the fine line between principle and stubbornness. By your example, I notice how pleasant it can be for the observer to notice the willingness of an action and /or habit to change, when necessary.

    3. I meant it from experience too. I have a very smart older sibling who is capable of flexibility. She teases me that I can be stubborn, and I tell her, it is principle. From the changes you made after processing and communicating why the change was requested, you made the change. For me it was a lesson in differentiating between principle vs stubborn as opposed to agreeable flexibility when it is practical. The later, I do sometimes. When I see it in action in your case, realized how it makes human interaction more pleasantly embraced.

    2. I'm starting to feel that she may do a heavy satin sleek, more form fitting dress (not mermaid) & possibly somehow sleeveless? I can also see her going with that CKB type Wedding Dress look for her 2nd dress, for the reception. It will be so interesting! It really could be anything! Even outside the usual boxes! It would be nice if one was designed my Roland Mouret, since they are such good friends. But I haven't received a phone call yet asking my opinion! :( Hmfh! lol :)

    3. Becca, I think as you point out that we need to remember that MM has worked hard to get her life where it is and no doubt has an opinion on all things. She would not wear something if she didn't want to. There is a reason why she is liked by people who don't need to like her, like Serena. I think she is very special. Remember Harry said that he told himself that he needed to up his game when he first saw her. :)

Link#1: Beautiful sweater, but I wonder if the high-low style makes it look casually informal.
Link#2: Appealingly comfortable looking beautiful sweater and a Meghan kind of style.
Link#3: Once again similar sweater, same comment, a winner again.

March 12 - Commonwealth Day service
Link#1: The coat style with a tie belt is in style with wide collars which Meghan wore in Wales and for Christmas. Your selection picks up on her style and formulated it for an important international appearance of The Commonwealth event. The high color dressed that way gives it a certain formality beyond the latest style. Dark blue is a safe color for Meghan. She may have to be cautious in her selection of hats. Most likely she had been discovering what works best for her. I think you nailed that coat perfectly IMHO.

Link#2: I think the multi-color coat in contrast, Mr. D chose for Meghan blends well. I am not sure of any bright color (not even solid white). The hat is tricky. Hats as you know are used in USA from churches to the South, to cowboys, and to what not. For a girl from America, assimilating into British styles of hats, I hope she will consider some factors and select cautiously, with thoughts of what it looks like for USA too.

Link#3: PM’s coat is in style, and Meghan had favored that also. Personally, I don’t care for it; it reminds me of a night gown. The color is nice though. I don’t care for that hat for the Commonwealth church event. At least the church part of the service will be interfaith, and my mind is on that mood. PM looks somewhat hipped in the hat though. You brought it to the event in Link#1, the way Zara wore similar style. I think Meghan’s feature includes her forehead as a plus ( I hope she gets the right hat ).

Link#4: PM’s entire style looks lovely. Although both grey and beige are earth tones, as they are exclusively contrasting each other don’t look good to me. Well I am one voice among many others. Still each item she is wearing is nice. There are some boots structured to be stiff and not drop in folds around the lower legs. PM’s seems almost one of those kinds. That is another thing Meghan may pick cautiously. She has small frame, and good long boots for heavy calves or slim legs require some attention in shopping.
You and Mr. D made such thoughtful selections. Whenever there is style entry, both of you post memorable presentations. I am assuming this is the same sofy. I hope my posts to you and Mr. D is not taken as being critical. It was plain and honest of the way I saw it.

    2. Anon15 – I appreciate your feedback. Everyone will have different taste about an outfit and I like hearing different opinions. And yes, it the same sofy.

    3. Link#3 correction from my post: Not a night gown, should be a bath robe gown.

  31. Great choices Sofy, I've just come across a (new to me) UK brand that would suit Meghan's simple laid back style, called Cefinn. Not sure if it were too political to wear though, as it's set up by Samantha Cameron (wife of ex PM David Cameron) There's some nice choices for Meghan though, these two caught my eye:

I think burgundy will be a romantic color for her complexion. The style of the dress is something someone under the eyes of international community considers. It is nicely a family of red without being bold red. It looks feminine and maturely comfortable. Sometimes commenters on these blogs may have their say about it (when it comes to styles, there are different outlooks especially on DKB). It can be from age and cultural variation. I am definitely not a millennium generation, but I have also had my days of mini, pant skirt, midi and maxi; I never considered the latter two matronly.

Her baptism is sometime this month. There is something solemn, decent, pure and humble about it. You have keen eyes and some imagination for styles

    1. I rushed to open the link, and then commented. I forgot to read your comment with it until later, now. Samantha Cameron seems to design from her soul too, regarding the blue dress. As a designer, SC has a right to shine exclusively on her own talent regardless of whose spouse she is. The case of Weinstein's designer wife loss of some clients had been unfortunate for her on top of the betrayal of her husband.

  33. Oh my comment on #2 at 04:23 is about the dress which alternately reminds me of clergy clothes as well as a reasonable section for Meghan for her baptismal day, or arrival to a church service on a Spring day.
