Royal Wedding: Elegant Invitations & A Reception at Frogmore House!

Royal wedding details are flying in this week! Six hundred guests have been issued these traditional and regal invitations ahead of the big day.

The invitations read:

"His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales KG KT requests the pleasure of the company of....... at the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales with Ms Meghan Markle at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on Saturday 19th May, 2018 at 12 Noon followed by a reception at Windsor Castle.'

The invitations, posted this week, have been produced by Barnard & Westwood. The company has held a Royal Warrant for Printing & Bookbinding by Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen since 1985. In January 2012, it became one of the privileged few to be awarded a second Royal Warrant for Printing by The Prince of Wales. The invitation is die-stamped in gold and then burnished. The text on the invitation is also die-stamped. The edges of the invitation are bevelled then gilded. The invitation features The Three Feather Badge of The Prince of Wales. The names of invited guests are added later by a calligraphy printer.

Kensington Palace said they "follow many years of royal tradition". Harry and Meghan added their own touches - choosing 24-year-old Lottie Small, who recently completed her apprenticeship, to print all of the invitations in a process known as die stamping, on a machine from the 1930s that she affectionately nicknamed Maude.

In a nod to both America and England, Lottie used American ink on English card.

Austen Kopley, Managing Director, said:

"The wedding of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle will be a truly special occasion and we are thrilled to be able to create equally special invitations for their guests. We are incredibly honoured to continue our longstanding work for The Royal Family, and to be involved in such an important moment for the couple and their family and friends."

More on the dress code:

'The invitation stipulates a strict dress code with men asked to don military uniform or a morning coat and lounge suit, with women asked to wear a day dress and hat. Harry, a former solder who is now Captain General of Royal Marines, may therefore be in uniform for the ceremony.'

Around 600 people have been invited to the service at St George's Chapel. All 600 guests have also been invited to the lunchtime reception at St George's Hall, which is being given by Her Majesty The Queen. Later that evening, around 200 guests are being invited to the private reception at Frogmore House given by The Prince of Wales.

The choice of Frogmore Hosue comes as no surprise. The 17th century English country house, which is located within the grounds of the Home Park, Windsor, provided the backdrop of Harry and Meghan's engagement portraits. It has been said the couple spent quite a bit of time there during the early days of their relationship.

The house is currently uninhabited, but it is used by the royal family to host both private and official events.

In recent times, the house was notably used as the venue for the Queen's grandson Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly's wedding reception in 2008.

More from Windsor.gov.uk:

'Set amidst the extensive Home Park of Windsor Castle, Frogmore House is surrounded by fine and picturesque gardens. The house dates from the 1680s and was purchased for Queen Charlotte in 1792.  Here the Queen was able to indulge her love of botany and laid out the garden with many rare and unusual plants.
At one time the house was the home of Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent. After her death, her son-in-law, Prince Albert, commissioned the building of an elegant mausoleum to hold her remains.  Queen Victoria was particularly fond of Frogmore's peaceful ambience and it became her favourite retreat.
Victoria and Albert's love of Frogmore lead them to break with tradition and build themselves a much larger and grander mausoleum for themselves.'

The picturesque gardens will be a treat for guests.

It's shaping up to a beautiful wedding!

  1. I love that we're getting a peek into the details ahead of the wedding! It really builds the excitement. :) And how wonderful for Lottie Small. I hope this brings her a lot of success.

The invitation is lovely. I find it interesting it names her as Meghan. I hope this puts the idea that she'll officially go by Rachel after getting married to rest.

    2. Not exactly, Eugenie. Just as Catherine is officially Princess William, but styled as Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge; we will have a Princess Henry who will likely be styled Meghan, Duchess of Whatever-HM-Decides.

    3. I think it's marvelous they used someone so new and apparently talented and she used an 85 year old machine. Some things really are done better by hand.

And very interesting they didn't use her first given name!

    4. I think Meghan is a lovely name, so I’m glad she chose to use it rather than her first given name.

  6. Wow! Truly beautiful invitations for what is shaping up to be a beautiful event :) I just love these wonderful little gestures that have gone into the various details thus far. From the American baker who lives in London to the Americam ink on the English card... so much of thought and consideration from Harry and Meghan which does not go unnoticed.

I use to follow Meghan on Instagram and one of the things which really caught my attention was her love of calligraphy so I have no doubt that the design of these invitations are incredibly special to her :)

  9. I love the intricate details that's going into the planning of this wedding. American ink on English card, who would have thought, that with all that must go into planning a Royal wedding, they came up with that idea ! It's lovely that they're (to the very best of their abilities) weaving both of their backgrounds, and who they are, into the wedding details.

Beautiful invitation cards! Frogmore House and the gardens will be perfect for the reception. I just hope and pray it will be a sunny day - England is particularly beautiful during spring time (I´ve spent two "Mays" in England, both beautiful, sunny, mostly warm and everything was so green, lush, full of lovely blooms, so "English springtime at its best"!!). Ahhhh, I can´t wait, honestly, I sometimes wish they wouldn´t share any details at all, as it just adds to my excitement and my impatience, LOL!!!

  13. Charlotte, you don't need to print this comment. I just have a question regarding the dress code on the wedding invitation. I noticed the same wording in the Daily Mail article and wondered about it then, too. I don't have a good enough Zoom function on my computer to tell definitively from the photo of the invitation, but to my eye the men's dress code reads 'uniform, morning coat or lounge suit' rather than 'uniform, morning coat and lounge hat'. I have seen 'lounge suit' (business suit to my Canadian mind, I think) listed as part of other dress codes before, but I've never heard of a lounge hat. Would you know for sure?

    1. The invitation says ‘’or lounge suit’’. Some people at Daily Mail just can’t read apparently.

Thankyou Charlotte for the great post as usual.

Interesting to see Harry is referred to as Henry but Meghan isn’t Rachel as she was listed out in the Queens message earlier.

  16. Any thoughts on why Meghan's mother or both parents are not listed on the invitation? Because they cannot contribute monetarily? I'm sure it is something that is OK with Meghan, but wondered if anyone had any ideas.

    1. I think it's because he's hosting. Kate & Will's card made no mention of the Middletons or Prince Charles, only Queen Elizabeth.

I'm from the U.S. and I know it's traditional for both sets of parents to be included in the invitation but I don't know if it's a British tradition to only include the host.

LOL, Charlotte!! My daughter was "mildly exasperated" with my enthusiastic "OMG, it´s starting!! OMG, THE BRIDE!! IT´S THE BRIDE!!!" about every two seconds - eye rolling, "Mum, I HEAR YOU. There´s a bride at every wedding!", "Can you PLEASE keep you voice down!!" and other similar expressions of her opinion "of it all" accompanying my excited behaviour, LOL!! I guess this time, though, she will at least want to watch the bride, Meghan somehow interests her much more than any other woman joining a royal family before....
As far as the "live blog from Frogmore" is concerned - well, KP couldn´t find a better coverage, if you ask me!!!! :-))))

  18. What a nice surprise to discover this unexpected information about H&M wedding today. They are truly sharing great detail and allowing the public to be part of their day. The grounds of Windsor are absolutely beautiful. The grounds remind me of our arboretums and botanic gardens. It would be so lovely to have cocktails out on a patio overlooking the grounds weather permitting. The date is truly fast approaching.

    ReplyDelete
  19. A thought, I wonder if Frogmore House will also be the site of the evening dinner party? Also, will H&M spend their wedding night at Windsor or head back into London for the evening festivities and depart for their honeymoon from there. I would think the 200 guests invited to the evening reception are among the 600. They would have to change for the evening. That to me speaks of a return trip to London. I remember the great photos of W&K the day after their wedding. I would hope we see the same for H&M. So many thoughts and questions. The wedding invitations being posted all at once makes it very real.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No doubt the 600 include elderly family members and crowned heads who are invited to the ceremony and reception. Those among the 200 might include show business people and others who for political reasons (like the Obamas) would not create an international incident by showing up at the evening knees up.

  25. 🌸 So neat that apprentice Lottie Small got the honor of working on the Royal wedding invitation using a revered 1930’s machine that Lottie sweetly nicknamed “Maude”.
I at first thought that they had recruited Lottie from a local training program for printing. But Lottie has a BA Hon in hand embroidery from The Royal School of Needlework and has been working as an apprentice in Bernard and Westwood’s prestigious apprentice program since 2015. Barnard and Westwood even have a nice interview from 2015 with Lottie, their then new apprentice, on their website. Lottie’s parents were antique dealers so maybe that is where she acquired her love of detail. You can tell from her interview that printing/graphic arts are her passion. Now she is part of Royal history, and, so is “Maude”.

And, way to go Meghan, you not only got the very famous and Iconic “Three Feather Badge of The Prince of Wales” on your wedding invitation but you got the “Three Feather Badge of The Prince of Wales” in real gold on your wedding invitation.😳 And, in American ink (did you request that?) on English card.😳

And, you will be married in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, then ride in a Royal carriage through the village and down that quaint little two mile long driveway to a luscious banquet in Great Hall in Windsor Castle AND THEN have a small little get together of 200 at beautiful, historic Frogmore House and you’ll be doing it all on the arm of Prince Harry. AND, who knows where you’ll go for your honeymoon.😳 After a quick jaunt to the Palace at Monaco for New Years, it is anyone’s guess. lol Girl, don’t tell me you don’t need someone to pinch you to see if it’s all real. (I really don’t think you do though.)

And, hey, I know the Royal family uses Frogmore for private and Royal events but they have lots of other places for those, yeh? They moved offices out of the way for William and Kate’s apartment at Kensington Palace, so I think you and Harry will be taking up residence at Frogmore. I really do. :) It is about time someone lived there again. And Meghan says, “Um hummm.” :)

  29. Yay, my invitation came in the post today. It's lush! Haha...I wish. :) Seriously though, this is so exciting! I can't believe we've got less than 2 months to go now.

The invitations are gorgeous. I love the font and that the ink is from America and the paper from England. I really appreciate the way they've found small ways to incorporate America, with the cake (baker) and now invitations (ink). So fun and creative. I wonder how they might also do this with the flowers (maybe Californian poppies?), food, and the dress...

What do people think in terms of Meghan getting a personal coat of arms so that she'll have one to have impaled with Harry's, post-wedding. The California state animal is the grizzly bear and the bird is the California quail. The CA quail is super cute - it's got a little plume coming from the top of its head! Adorbs. The only thing about the quail is that Harry (or the BRF anyway) hunt quail...so maybe that's bad to have a prey animal for her coat of arms.

My guess is that her coat of arms will include a Californian poppy or maybe redwood tree symbol, and the bear. And, that the colors will be blue and gold (CA state colors). Although...maybe that's a bit too heavy on the Californian imagery.

Anyone else have any thoughts about Meghan's coat of arms?

    2. 🌸 inthekitchen. funny about the quail dilemma. :)
I think your suggestions to incorporate into a coat of arms are all thoughtful ones. And YES I definitely think Meghan must have a coat of arms. Her children and their children and their children are going to be part of Royal history from now on. They need that legacy just as others before them have had it. Historical enrichment and historical continuity and all that. Jolly good and all that. :)

      Delete
    3. I hope she is given a coat of arms, though I don’t know what the protocol on that is. I know for Catherine, her father was actually granted the coat of arms and she was able to use them as his daughter. Since Meghan’s father is not one of the Queen’s subjects, I guess Meghan would have to get her own? I really don’t know all the rules around the whole thing. But I am curious as to what will happen.

      Delete
    4. Oh, but I forgot to say what I actually hope they incorporate in the design! I hope there is some sort of nod to her Californian roots, but not in a kitschy way. I think it will be elegant, whatever it turns out to be. I’m hoping for the poppy, since Meghan seems to really like flowers.

      Delete
    5. In the kitchen, those are wonderful ideas for Meghan's coat of arms. A poppy would be so lovely. Do we know how long it will take for Meghan's coat of arms to be revealed?

Also, I was wondering why Meghan's first name Rachel wasn't used on the invite. I know that she's been known as Meghan for a long time but I thought that the birth name should always be used on an invite? Correct me if I'm wrong :)

      Delete
    6. I had thought it was a forgone conclusion that she would get a coat of arms, so that it could be matched up with Harry's, so that they would then have their Married Coat of Arms? I had been wondering if they would use some American symbols? Even North American symbols (since she lived in Toronto)? Sort of an nod to the general "across the pond" thing? Too stereotypical? Maybe she'd choose some symbols as a nod to each of her parents' heritages? Tho I do think it will be just based on her & not for her family to use. I've not said anything negative about them all along, but I think at this point that's the last thing they need (not including her Mother of course) .... a regal coat of arms to parade about. :(

I couldn't help but compare Kate and William's invitations to Meghan and Harry's, since these looked quite a bit more formal than the standard, italicized type that the Cambridges used. I realized that the calligraphy-like font is pure Meghan. :) Let's not forget that she's mean with a pen and addressed Paula Patton and Robin Thicke's wedding invitations back in the day!

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
