Harry and Meghan Support Invictus Games Hopefuls!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended the UK team trials for the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 at the University of Bath Sports Training Village today.

An arrival shot of Meghan.

An arrival video from Emily Nash.

The couple, who will marry at Windsor next month (yes the wedding is that close now) have been busily making wedding plans with a flurry of announcements in recent weeks. Reporter Omid Scobie revealed fittings for the dress are taking place at an undisclosed London location and Kensington Palace. Meghan managed to enjoy an under-the-radar visit to LA; she jetted off last Thursday to spend quality time with her mother Doria.

The Invictus Games is the only international sport event for wounded, injured and sick (WIS) servicemen and women, both serving and veteran. The Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect of all those who serve their country. Sydney is the fourth city to host the Invictus Games, after London in 2014, Orlando in 2016, and Toronto in 2017.

The Toronto games marked a significant milestone for Harry and Meghan - their first official public appearance. Tellingly Meghan wore Misha Nonoo's Husband Shirt for the outing; the couple announced their engagement just two months later. Meghan opted for a relaxed look on the day, teaming the shirt with Mother Denim ripped jeans and her Everlane cognac tote. It's been interesting to see her style choices develop in recent months. She's been very much opting for a professional wardrobe with clean lines and neutrals.

The Invictus Games Sydney 2018 will take place from 20th-27th October and will see over 500 competitors from 18 nations compete in 11 adaptive sports.

Prince Harry's inspiring Invictus Games have been an outstanding success, and it is wonderful to see preparations in full swing ahead of this year's games. It's exciting for Meghan to witness the trial stage; she and Harry will travel to Australia in October to cheer on competitors and potentially undertake a full tour of the country and New Zealand.

In fact, Meghan shared confirmation of the Australia trip. Omid Scobie reports "Meghan confirmed she'll be at Invictus Sydney, telling Michael Mellon (who competed in sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball last year): "She told me she had never been to Australia but was going to this year’s event and really looking forward to being there with Harry."

Harry and Meghan cheered on hopefuls as they tried out on the athletics track and field.

The UK team trials are being run by Help for Heroes, with support from the Ministry of Defence, the Royal British Legion and the Endeavour Fund over four days.

More than 400 WIS military personnel and veterans are competing for one of the 72 places available on the UK team.

An interesting piece of information from the Palace:

'This year, 45 per cent of UK Team hopefuls have never applied for an Invictus Games before, highlighting the legacy of London, Orlando and Toronto.'

The increased number of applicants is a testament to the success of the games thus far.

A video from the trials.

Meghan shared a hug with a lady who was very excited to meet her.

There was a terrific atmosphere throughout the day.

Meghan with competitors and their families.

Harry and Meghan caught up with Mark Ormrod. He was one of the stars of Invictus Toronto and looks set to take Sydney by storm. In fact, Mark's determination impressed Harry so much, he talked about him during his Invictus closing speech last year. "I told you to be ready to see examples of determination, that would give you power in your own lives. But I’m not sure any of us were ready to see Mark Ormrod, with a medal round his neck, hoisting his son onto his shoulders, and capturing the imagination of the world."

More on Mark's story:

'In the early hours of Christmas Eve 2007, Royal Marines Commando Mark Ormrod was out on a routine foot patrol in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan when he stepped on and triggered an Improvised Explosive Device. Thanks to the swift action of the men around him and the intervention of the Medical Emergency Response Team he was airlifted via helicopter to an emergency field hospital in a desperate attempt to try and save his life. An innovative and dangerous procedure carried out onboard a Chinook helicopter en route to the hospital did save his life. He woke up three days later in the UK in Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham: Both legs amputated above the knee and his right arm amputated above the elbow. He was the UK’s first triple amputee to survive the Afghanistan conflict.'

Harry was very much in his element and looked incredibly proud as he watched trials.

It was a great opportunity to catch up with familiar faces.

People reports:

'Maurillia Simpson, 44, who injured her leg while training for Afghanistan, chatted with the couple after taking part in the shot put event.
“Every time [Harry] sees me now he gives me an embrace,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s just something we do and I always tell him how much I appreciate him as a person and for who he is to us as soldiers and how gratefully we are for him giving us this as part of our recovery.”
Simpson says she and Meghan also joked about the windy weather. “We were talking about the weather and she joked about how British she has already become because she’s always talking about the weather,” Simpson says. “She said, ‘I’m British now. I’m totally British because I speak about the weather all the time.”
Simpson then congratulated the couple on their upcoming wedding and told Harry how glad she was that he had found support in Meghan, to which he responded: “Thank you very much.” Meghan added, “That means a lot to me.”

The couple met those taking part in the indoor sitting volleyball trials.

A great snap from the University of Bath.

Harry and Meghan with Kelly Ganfield and her family. Kelly, who is visually impaired, competed in the games last year and hopes to do so again in Sydney.

They were delighted to meet two-year-old Bethany.

Meghan wore the Babaton for Artizia Lawson Trench Coat (with thanks to Perth Fashion).

The $245 piece is described as "Tailored with exceptionally smooth, fluid fabric, the Lawson is one of Babaton's most-loved pieces. Their take on the timeless trench silhouette is updated with an open front and a cascading lapel for a more modern feel." The green hue is called 'monterey'.

Fittingly, Meghan wore an official Invictus Games Foundation polo shirt. You can purchase an almost identical Invictus Sydney shirt at Rebel Sport.

It very much looks like Meghan wore her Mother Denim Runway Bootcut Jeans.

A better look at the jeans on Meghan.

Meghan wore the very pretty Vanessa Tugendhaft Clover necklace (a great spot from the ladies at What Meghan Wore).

More from the product description: "Clover paved diamonds and 18K Pink Gold chain set with two solitaires diamonds."

And accessorised with her Vanessa Tugendhaft Infinie Promesse ring and £40 Catbird Gold rings.

Meghan's boots remain unidentified at this point.

Another great engagement! I expect we'll hear news on Harry and Meghan's attendance at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting soon.

  1. I absolutely adore Meghan and think she’s stunning and wonderful, but today’s outfit is a low point for me. I’d have loved to have seen her in some sneakers. She’s on a track in stiletto boots it just doesn’t make sense to me. I hope she starts to learn more as she goes along what works best for her for comfort and what’s appropriate for the occasions she’s at.

    1. I wasn't going to mention that, but once I read what you said LizaG, I had to say I agree! It wasn't a "low point" for me, I just was surprised to see stiletto boots for walking on grass & such! Sneakers would have been perfect, but even ok if her boots had a thicker heal. It's so wonderful seeing her sharing the day with Harry! :)

I hear what you're saying but even Prince Harry didn't wear sneakers so I think for them their looks today were totally appropriate for overseeing the trials 😊

    3. I feel like her mom - stop fidgeting with your hair and wear appropriate shoes! A pony and trainers with a sporty short jacket would help.

  2. Oh I'm cracking myself up! I woke up this morning excited to see what Meghan would wear to her first active athletic engagement. I thought "Well we know 1 thing for sure, she won't be wearing Skinny Jeans!"..... Then I get to the "First Look" & I start scrolling down & for a Split Second I thought OMG???? Then I got to the bottom of the pic & saw her jeans were slightly flared! lol :) Now I'm a skinny jeans fan & I'd be fine if she wore them, but with them being such a hot topic, there wasn't even a question in my mind that would be one subject we would avoid. So I about had a heart attack when I thought she was wearing some! lol :)

    3. Natalie, do you follow Charlotte's DKB?

    4. Hi Natalie, I just took a jump over to DKB & saw that yes you are part of the group! :) So, I'm not sure when you joined in? But it's been a long standing, polarizing (now jokingly so) hot topic! :) It goes back years to when they were a "go to" for casual or sporting engagements! :) Lots of crazy discussions & debates if you want to scroll back! Now it's more of a funny dreaded hot topic! lol :) If they are spotted, lots of Ugghhhs can be expected!! lol :)

    5. Ahhh okay. Yes, I’m vaguely aware of that ongoing debate. I’ve been reading DKB for years but only starting commenting in the past year. I was thinking something had happened with an outfit Meghan wore in the past or just generally in fashion “news” that I had missed.

      Thanks for the clarity!

    6. Natalie, I am sooooo embarrassed! I don't know where I left my head? We chat all the time over at DKB! So sorry! :( I think there was some joking in the recent post about how the "Skinny Jeans" were a definite positive I.D. re: the shopping pics! lol :) Anyway, my reference about Skinny Jeans comes from all the jesting & frustrations over at DKB on the subject! lol :)

    7. Becca, lol yes, as soon as I read your comment I was like “oh yeah someone was JUST talking about this on DKB!” I try to keep up with everyone’s comments on each new blog entry Charlotte writes...not only do I learn something new each time I read her articles, but I’ve learned a ton from the people who share here too!

Also btw, I’m a total skinny jeans fan! For myself and for whoever else likes to wear them!

  4. Wow! She looks so legit!! She's at her 1st Athletic Engagement!!! So cool to see Harry at an Invictus Event not alone & with Meghan by his side wearing an Official Invictus Top!!! Uber Cool!! Now this makes it all so real!!! :) She looks Great & Every Bit The Royal at This Sporty Engagement!:) At first I thought she was wearing a trench bomber jacket, but then I saw the video & clearly it's a long trench. I'm thinking a short jacket might have been more efficient, especially with the wind whipping around. Maybe she'll take off the trench & just have her Invictus sweatshirt top on! I do think even wearing an official Invictus wind breaker jacket would have been more functional & then the whole look would have been officially sporty. But this is so cool seeing them together, being an Official part of Harry's "Baby"! So Happy!:) Perfection would have been if she had worn a high pony! :) Can't wait for more pics! :)

    1. Seems there's a bit of confusion about my use of the word "legit"! I meant that she looks like a regular working Royal now! No longer just the "new kid" following along & hanging on! Very engaging, on her own, with competitors & their families. She is keeping pace with Harry, no longer being pulled along. Hope that clears things up? The choice of word had nothing to do with fashion! :)

  5. Yes, Meghan is in black! She is very appropriately dressed for the occasion. I love her trench coat. All the rage at the moment. Wonderful soft flow to the fabric which is key in making a statement. M&H are looking very relaxed and Harry in particular is in his element. Hopefully, we will see them yet again before the big day.

  7. Bootcut jean and pointy toe heels is such a dated look for me. So this outfit is a no for me. I love what the blonde lady in the trench and chinos is wearing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes!! Individually the pieces were great, but all together it felt dated. The coat was overly large and the slightly flared jeans with pointy boots was something I wore 10+ years ago. I also think the blonde in the trench coat had a much better overall look.

    2. Anonymous in Colorado6 April 2018 at 17:24

Maybe this look is SO dated that it's coming around to be in fashion again?! Lol!

      Delete
    3. I agree. I don’t care for bootcut jeans and I also think the blonde woman had a great coat.

      Delete
    4. While I don't care for the look, I'll disagree with you on this point and say this is style over fashion. Boot cut jeans + heels might look dated to some now, but they're a good cut for someone like her. Her legs being extra thin and her ankles skinny have been discussed here and I think this style pant balances her body better. I won't be upset if she keeps this cut in her rotation.

      Delete
    5. Anon 19:58, I'm gonna have to go with you on this one! You make a good case! :)

    6. I nodded my ahead as I was reading the part about the blonde lady's looks but I realize now I think that's a very British look. I think in America slightly flared pants with heels is still a stylish work outfit Lol!

    7. Mmmm Meghan all the way for me, she looks amazing, especially that pic inside walking with Harry without the coat- she looks smashing!

    8. I like her understated style and always will, and may I say, you are right about her sense of what suits her and balances her body. Royals in trainers? Fine for some.

    9. I agree this feels a little mid-2000s. Doesn’t quite work for me. However I am continually struck by how gorgeous she is regardless of what she’s wearing. And she and Harry are such an attractive couple. I smile whenever I see them.

  8. I hope Harry is proud of what he's done with invictus. And it's lovely to see Meghan coming along and cheering the athletes on. But what I really want to say is that I must have that coat!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. It’s not like she was going to get out there and run the track so I don’t have a problem with what she’s wearing. Harry doesn’t even have sneakers on, I love that she’s keeping true to her style and not doing what everyone expects her to do.

    1. Still think different shoes would have been a better option. Not even sneakers, but flats, boots, wedges, or block heels would have been more sensible imo.

      Delete
    2. Meghan is 36 knows what she likes to wear, she knew she was going to an athletic and was not going to participate and knew she had several options- she opted for heels instead of tennis shoes/sneakers to go with her boot-cut jeans. For those who think she will dress in a predictable manner I think you will be disappointed, she likes changing things up, if she is modest, professional and presentable for the occasion which I think she is then I do not see a problem, she looks effortlessly chic.

    3. Meghan all the way for me here - she looks stylish, the other lady in cream trench coat looks like she could just be stepping out to a grocery store. I guess we all prefer different styles.

Honestly, I don´t care AT ALL what Meghan (or Harry or anyone else for that matter) is wearing, I just saw the video of the two of them greeting the guy with just his left arm left, his legs gone, his right arm gone, yet he was in such cheerful spirits - my life is still a mess, but watching this guy, everything just went into category "SO unimportant and minor"..... We who didn´t have to go through the hell of war and combat and waking up maimed for life, we should be all SOOOOOOO GRATEFUL!!!!!!! We complain about the problems in our lives - well, we don´t know half of it!!! Kudos to these veterans, kudos, kudos, kudos....

    4. Totally agree re: all the points on how this is an amazing cause and we are all grateful. However, a big part of this blog is about fashion, even highlights that in the title "The life and STYLE of Meghan Markle" So I don't think it's fair to belittle people who do care about what she is wearing...we are all allowed an opinion.

      Delete
    5. Imstagg879, I understood Eve to be saying on this day at this event, that "She" wasn't even registering what they wore, as she was just so moved by the competitors & the event's mission! I didn't pick up on Eve putting that choice onto anyone else. Of course MAM is about chatting up fashion & anything else Charlotte has chosen to Post about. It's all about opinions here, yours, Eve's, mine & everyone else's! I didn't read or pick-up Any belittling in Eve's comment. So please share what you thought about Meghan's look today? I Would love to get your thoughts! :)

    6. Eve's comment was fine there was no looking down on anyone's comment, I agree with her. I was thinking these people almost lost their lives defending their country and fellow citizens, in as much as I would like to look at Meghan's fashion, it would be nice to also give a big salute to these heroes- and that's what Eve did.

      Eve -

The competitors at the Invictus Games are so amazing - it is so humbling when you are in their presence! We were in Toronto last year and it’s something I willl NEVER forget. I’m so thrilled that they are going to be supporting the games together. If any of you have the chance to go the games, you will see some awe inspiring people. The athletes were all so friendly! We met several from Great Britain who were just lovely.

I love what Meghan wore and I loved your comment!!!

I by no means meant to belittle anyone who was commenting on her fashion choices for today, I was indeed just so overwhelmed by what I saw that fashion took a back seat for the day (just for me, that is!).
I can see where those are coming from who say that flared jeans and pointed boots are kind of a "dated look" or that the olive trench over the black outfit once again made her rather "invisible", etc. - but personally, I liked the look because it suits her, she seemed comfortable with it, and she seems to prefer not to stand out too much, but rather to "be part of it", Harry as well, by the way. It´s a different approach, they both seem to want to be more "approachable", more "call me Meghan/Harry" instead of "I´m HRH...." - if that makes any sense? I don´t want to start a debate over "approaches", I´m totally open to how their approach is going to work for them, I find it just interesting to watch and see it unfold....
Hope this brings some clarity? ;-)))
Thanks to all who "jumped to my defense" - I was very spontaneous with my first comment and I´m glad so many of you shared what I felt!

    9. There are many, many engagements the young Royals go to that focus on people's hardships and sufferings, etc. I cannot even imagine how Kate is involved with child bereavement - I admire her so much for that. This blog, and Kate's blog, are as much for what the ladies are doing as what they are wearing, if not even more. Many, many comments focus on the charities involved and the work that is being done and the people that are being helped. It's true, when the focus of an engagement brings to light human suffering, it feels quite frivolous to focus on critiquing what the ladies are wearing. That is understandable and Eve is perfectly right to bring that to our attention.

  12. Meghan looks beautiful in these photos. I like her entire outfit and i see a lot of women in my professional like wearing bootcut and heels for a casual look so am surprised at some of these comments here. If she feels comfortable walking in heels power to her and if she feels cold enough to wear a longer trench she should wear it because she goes for comfort over what is in trend. What surprises me is the same approach is celebrated in Kate and here it is all criticism. Anyway good going Meghan!

  16. Good to see Harry and Meghan's involvement in the Invictus Games. Love Meghan's olive trench coat. She is such a stunning woman. The high heel on her boots strike a discordant note for me, though. I don't like to see them on a track surface. The length of the jeans seem to dictate a high heal, but I think she probably would have looked better in flats or flat boots, or as another poster has said, a boot with a block heel.

  17. Harry must be so proud and to have Meghan with him now must be awesome. What a great event and some fabulous pictures - Meghan is so photogenic and beautiful close up in these photos - I can see why she objects to her freckles being airbrushed out - she looks so natural.

Have to say the flared trousers and heels was a bit of dated look/miss for me - the blonde lady in the trench coat carried a fresher look in my opinion - so a cool pair of trainers would have been a better choice? small quibble when she looks so effortlessly beautiful though.

    1. I agree with you, Mr D, that the silhouette of flares and heels is quite dated, but these jeans are somewhere in between a restrained bootcut and a full-on '70s flare.

I don't mind the heeled boot since I think she wanted enough height to get her hems off the ground! Perhaps she wanted to showcase the jeans rather than the boots and dress up a casual ensemble with a bit of style.

    2. Mr. D., I agree with everything you said & you said it so beautifully! :) Funny thing, I have just dipped my toe into working with a stylist & (as I wanted to be more on trend for meetings I have in the film industry & when going out with production colleagues) well the very first look she pulled for me, was a dark pair of long slightly flared jeans & pointy booties with a thin heal! With tops to mix & match along with a floral embroidered short olive trench! I've received so many compliments/don't know if it's just the industry???! But nothing I would have otherwise chosen for myself! Who knew??? It also may just be the right setting for that sort of look? I was thinking about that when I saw Meghan wearing that flare jeans/booties look. Maybe it's a look from her previous world? I'm sure I'm over thinking it all! lol :)

  18. Great cause and loved seeing them out there today. However, as a big part of the blog is fashion I think it's appropriate to have opinions on that...Meghan's outfit was a huge miss for me, I think it's the biggest miss to date. Pointed toe heels at an athletic engagement is just a no here, it was completely out of place.

  19. As a proud owner of SO many Catbird first knuckle rings, I can't tell you how thrilled I am that Meghan wears them, too. Good taste ;) and I covet that gorgeous trench. We all know that Meghan likes to experiment with proportion, and I like the balance of those bootcuts paired with the voluminous length of the trench (quelle dramatique, especially billowing in the wind).

I'm so glad to see these two out and about. Meghan looks relaxed, and Harry seems very protective of her here. It might be my imagination, but I suspect she's gone through a hard time lately with the forthcoming pub of Andrew Morton's book and her so-called former "best friend's" sustained, enthusiastic cooperation. What a low thing for a bff (former or otherwise) to do!!!!

    Keep your head up, Meghan!

    1. Oh, Head in the Sand moment........ What book? Is Andrew Morton writing a book with the cooperation of that "old time bff"??? Awful if I understand that correctly! No bff, former or otherwise would do such a thing! Ergo...... she is a sad sellout, having thus lost her status as a 'former bff'! People like that go from category old bf to people that passed through one's life! :( & I don't care how many old photos or videos or info you have! You behave like that & you lose not only your past friend, but any street cred!! :(

    4. It's so sad. Yes, Andrew Morton's book is coming out soon and he wrote an article based on his findings for The Sunday Times (UK). I read his promo piece, and it's somewhat even-handed in tone, but he really pursued people from Meghan's past.

The former bff has to have extremely bitter, hateful feelings to sell out her friend like that. I don't understand this scenario at all. There are many friends I've lost contact with over the years, but I still remain protective of them. I can't imagine what Meghan must be going through. It's a vile situation.

    5. Lauren, I completely agree! This person must be one sad & bitter woman!

    6. What's funny is he didn't talk to Samantha Grant, her sister. She wanted too much money for an interview.

    7. Speaking of people coming out of the woodwork, her former agent had spoken with the Daily Mail and the story is so full of innuendo. I am very disappointed with journalists these days because they have lost all objectivity and this is another story aimed at twisting some basic facts. As I read the story, I am convinced that the agent given her media connections must have been one of those unnamed sources that have been speaking to the media. Just something about the agents proximity and the tone of the story makes me suspect.

It also amazes me how a woman makes decisions about what she wants out of life she is labeled as ruthless yet if a man does the very same things he is considered brilliant and hardworking. Another example of how women who know what they want and are ambitious are labeled "difficult"....

Keep your head up Meghan, and I am sure it is your decisiveness, work ethic and "ruthlessness" that drew in Harry. Plus you are absolutely beautiful

Oh Ridget - I could tell stories about "strong women" versus "strong men" - how they are perceived SO differently!! You (as a woman) have a child - you "have your priorities elsewhere" (AHA, so men with a child don´t?). You have no child - you´re "a ruthless bitch who stops at nothing" (in German it says, literally translated, to "walk over corpses"!!)- whereas men are at worst "single-minded". I could go on and on and on.... and how well I know the "difficult" bit!! I think I was labelled "difficult" more often in my life than called "a woman" - just because I spoke my mind (or the truth), or dared to voice an opinion different from what my boss thought.
I sincerely hope Meghan stays true to herself and doesn´t "disappear into the "royal rabbit hole""....

  20. I know you can't always get a true reflection from a photograph, but,it does looks like Meghan is starting to feel more comfortable attending events. At the beginning and just after the engagement was announced,we saw her clinging onto Harry for dear life, were as now, she seems more at ease, as if she's starting to find her way. It's really good to see ! It must have been quite daunting and overwhelming for her at the beginning, but she is definitely starting to find her own royal mojo !
I liked today's relaxed and casual look. I don't think she needed to wear a pair of trainers as she wasn't actually taking part in the sporting activities. But what a boost it must have given the competitors and their families to have H&M there today to cheer them on :-)

  24. Meghan seems to gain confidence with every engagement and is a fast learner. The outfit was mainly to focus on the Invictus Games so I have no issues with it. I hope in the future she will feel comfortable wearing flats or tennis shoes to more sporty events. While I understood the hand holding was for support I'm glad to see her acting more independent. They still look in sync and more power couply without the hand holding.

  25. What a great cause! And Harry is a genius for creating a forum to show how handicable wounded veterans are!

Now, on the style front, I have to be honest. I'm a little disappointed that Meghan elected to wear heels to such an event. My first impression is that the heels come across as insensitive or maybe not fully aware of her surroundings. She was on a track for Pete's sake! I think a cute ballet flat would have been more appropriate.

And let me add,. I don't think Meghan meant to be nor is she deft. I hope in the future she will be a little more in tune with her engagements. But, she still rocks in my book!

  26. Not my favorite look, but her hair is beautiful today. I love the long length with the subtle curl and lots of volume. The boots and jeans are right from 2005 and I'm not sure that we're at the point where we should bring back that look, even Meghan! Let's keep referencing the 90s for awhile before we come back to the 00's please! If anyone can pull it off, it's her, but I don't think even she should.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think she's wearing the heels because the jeans are just too long. She'd have to have them hemmed for sneakers to work. It seems quite a few of her pants are on the very long side. I'm not a huge fan of the very long pants, and not a fan of the bootcut on these. Harry and Meghan do look so comfortable with each other and in love. I hope it lasts. It's been kind of a whirlwind, especially when you consider that they've had a long-distance romance for much of the time. I wish them well and many years of happiness.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Her pants are probably a bit long for her because she is really petite, and she probably just leaves them long to wear with heels rather than having to go to the trouble of having them hemmed -- although wearing them that long with heels is a common look in the US. But I get so distracted by her beautiful face, with her clear skin just glowing, clearly wearing minimal makeup, and her charming freckles! Harry found a beautiful woman inside and outside, that's for sure! Of course, he's always easy on the eyes, too. Yes, I admit to being a bit shallow, but I adore red-haired men. And his beautiful red beard -- I do hope he keeps that for the wedding!

Anyway, their working relationship is running so smoothly now, and Meghan obviously loves the events and organizations that Harry supports. My husband worked at a huge military hospital for years and so was immediately aware of the Invictus Games and is a huge supporter, so I married the right man, obviously! The athletes are incredibly talented and motivated, and it shows in their enthusiasm, and Harry and Meghan's enthusiasm for them!

Meghan looked so happy meeting the participants in the trials and their families, and has that knack that's so required for royalty of being able to converse with anyone, anywhere. She's coming to the royal life more prepared than most non-royal spouses, I suspect! I was also quite impressed by the way she was walking at a very, very fast pace down the hall in her heels -- even when I could still wear spike heels back in the day, I never was able to stride along like that in them! Having watched one season thus far of Suits, I know she wore stilettos in the show and did a lot of walking scenes, so she's quite used to them, obviously. And even wearing high heels, Harry still towers over her, so she's a tiny woman. Does anyone know how tall she is? I'm just curious.

Most of all, I am just so happy that they're happy, it's ridiculous. They're a beautiful couple, and they're going to have a huge impact on the world together, adding to the impact they've each made as individuals already!

  30. I actually do not think it looks dated at all. I see tons of that style jean with heeled boots at least on the West Coast of the US. I wear it myself. I have boot cut, wide leg, and straight leg jeans. I stopped wearing skinny jeans a few years ago and do not see those worn as much.

    1. So true, Ali. I think we sometimes forget that hot style trends are often quite regional. Trends on the West Coast of North America are quite unlike those in central or eastern parts. Trends in Asia sometimes migrate over the Pacific after several years or maybe never. Continental Europe is another mix of regions and the UK quite apart from that. Therefore, something that is over and done in London may still be going strong somewhere else in the world.

Hey everyone : Boot cut jeans and short stacked heel boots or booties (ankle boots) are in fashion in the US right now. Not a huge flair, but enough to earn the title of bootcut. As Becca mentioned, a floral top goes with it. Florals are also on trend in tops, purses, Keds sneakers (trainers), shoes, skirts.

Thanks to every veteran; you are VERY APPRECIATED. Glad to see Ms Markle and Prince Harry giving support to this most generous show of care and concern. I have no issue with Ms Markle wearing boots or sneakers. Just my humble opinion; I could care less. However, the cause they’re supporting is TOPS with me. Thank you, Charlotte; thanks also for the statistical report indicating that involvement and support for the Invictus Games are both growing.

  35. Everyone seems to be having a great time at this event. Meghan looks lovely and I like the bootcut jeans on her. They actually help balance out her frame a bit and make her legs look really long.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the athletes and kudos to Harry for all of the work he has done in this area.

On the fashion front, well, I don't care for the combination of these pieces. No issues with them individually. I cannot understand wearing these boots for this occasion. And the trench coat is too long for a casual look. IMO, a shorter coat, different cut jeans, and ballet flats would have been better suited to this particular engagement.

Perhaps she's playing it safe and did not want to dress down too much, but IMO this outfit looked out of place.

    ReplyDelete
  37. While Meghan is a beautiful women, I cannot understand how anyone could call her style legit or very fashionable. It really baffles me. In my eyes it is rather bland and trying. Wearing lots of black or nudes is absolutely fine but it doesn’t make you look professional by itself. Her pieces aren’t even especially classic (as in the mainstream definition of classic style which is often very French: trenchcoat, blazer, striped top, silk blouse...).
I know fashion comes very much down to subjective preferences. So for me she is almost constantly missing the mark. Which is sad because as I said before she is very beautiful and could slay it. So I am awaiting the wedding a bit anxiously. Hopefully she will surprise me.
And of course I know she has no obligation to dress differently as she wants to (and what is appropriate in certain situations) but I can still heavily dislike her style.
And for the American readers- boot cut, flared legs with points heels is a dated, out of fashion style in Western Europe right now. This might change at one point but as of today one will definitely stick out and not in a good way (fashion wise). This might explain some of the criticism.
I am very happy she is already doing engagements because I predict one or two years of less work for her depending on when they will have a family. The Invictus games are a great event and I am very happy that they are both involved and it seems that they will stick with it in the future.

    2. Anonymous in Colorado7 April 2018 at 20:50

Fashion is so very subjective though isn't it? For me, Meghan hits the mark almost perfectly every time with her ensembles! The beauty of it all is that what is considered fashionable in w. Europe is probably very different in the America....love seeing the spectrum. And of course, what one person considers chic is not another person's cup of tea. There is no universal definition of chic, is there?

      Delete
    3. Yes, fashion is subjective and yes, people should definitely wear what they are comfortable in. I never said she should do otherwise. I merely pointed out the her look is not seen as highly professional but rather dated by the mainstream fashion taste in Europe right now.
That doesn’t keep European women from wearing what they want if they prefer something else. But there is a reason trends come into being- lots of people wear a similar style at the same time. Those who don’t stick out. Especially when they wear something you don’t really see anymore. It is not like they are shunned by society though.
So- I say her idea of fashion is definitely not what makes me like her. Is that a problem? Can I not point out what I consider minor criticism about something as superficial as how she dresses?

      Delete
    4. You hopefully realise that trends are created by clothing manifactures and fashion industry to sell more clothes all the time. I think just following trends all the time is losing yourself, a lot of it is probably not even wright for your figure etc.

First time I comment on Meghan , if I remember well ... although reading all comments ! Really, I do not mind if Meghan's cloths look "dated" , as long as she seems to feel fine wearing them .... this is the very point of elegance, being at ease in one's clothes.... she likes flowing coats, simple pull overs and skirts, and she wears them so well ! Harry looks really bright, and he and Meghan look really involved with those people, it must be quite daunting to meet some of them , must leave a very trying feeling when you shake hand with the only hand of a man ..... and still they cheerfully smile and support .... great job, so happy to see Harry not being always third of a team ...

Hello Anonymous in Colorado , so happy to share with someone from very far away ! I do think that the best Mghan feels with her clothes, the best she can think of what she has to do and how, of course one can feel she is at ease in public, but she definitely cannot behave like when she was a star , and she seems to have understood that very well already , from.all the photos and videos we see. Besides , she has very good quality clothes, splendid materials and good classic design with a modern twist, definitely not the BRF sartorial style, people have to get used to it '

  40. You are correct, Ali. The jeans being worn by Ms Markle are not “dated”. In the US, there are different style cuts. There is a company, LL Bean, in the US, where you can order different cuts. For those who enjoy wearing boots, the boot cut jean is very popular. Ms Markle is an American and at this point, most of her fashion style will reflect that of the USA. As her life progresses in the U.K., she will become more British oriented in her fashion selections; but I hope she remains true to her personal fashion style, and to what makes her feel comfortable and beautiful (of course, without crossing the lines of Royalty dress code inappropriateness).

One of the pictures of the models shows a self belt but the rest do not, so not sure if it’s included or not. It would have saved Meghan the inconvenience of having that coat blowing around in the wind.
What I like about Meghan’s style is that it is so effortless yet she really owns it. I don’t think she spends hours and days planning her outfits prior to each engagement. Rather, she manages to put together a modern look with strategic pieces in her closet.

It was a good idea to have them out and about prior to the wedding since their courtship has not been very long so that many have the opportunity to get to know them as a couple.

The blond woman in many of the shots with a beige trench coat looks okay in hers, so maybe it is the length of Meghan's that is not doing for me with this particular ensemble. Once indoors the looks was improved, however I am with others who said a more casual shoe would have suited the venue and event better. But then Meghan's pants would have been too long. 48. I read yet another "what Meghan is like" article by her former agent, Gina, who details some of the early romance with Harry facts. All is really complimentary until she says MM sent her a lovely email in October 2017 saying she was quitting show biz. Gina had a soap endorsement and something else, which she regretted losing. Then sometime later she emailed MM asking to use a photo, and received an email back from her lawyer. Gina implies that MM no longer had time to correspond with her, but it sounds like MM did correspond and then received nothing from Gina except a business email later. I'm writing this because we frankly don't know if MM was hurt by Gina and/or if MM's emails were reviewed by someone else who obviously thought this was a purely business request. This is a preemptive strike against negative comments on MM. :) People love to imply bad things that are probably not true, although I think everyone has the right to be crabby, snappy, and even unfriendly at some time in their life! MM continues to get rave reviews from early friends and teachers, etc., and I hope the pettiness will stop after the wedding.

    1. I thought that article was interesting in the abrupt change in tone when Meghan started dating Harry. She was her agent, and she was not making her money any more. Yet she tries to paint Meghan as cutting her off. Well, she did send her an email terminating their contract!

    2. Her agent has been the "unnamed source". I had written in an earlier comment before I saw yours.

Around that time we read about her quitting her career, cancelling her audi (or was it Volvo) lease that came with an endorsement deal. Who would know this better than her agent?

By this time I bet she was transitioning to "Harry's team" and I can bet with all the intelligence that is at their disposal they might have guessed as much that she was the leak hence the way the response was handled.

I always live be Newtons 3rd law...."For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction".

    3. I'm Team Meghan on this one! I think it speaks to the fact that early on, Harry & Meghan knew this was the real deal & Meghan had to start easing out of her old life in prep for her eventual new one. The transition had to be hard. She couldn't tell people (even those possibly working closely with her) what was actually going on for some time. I thinks it commends her, that she was taking guidance from Harry & his team, regarding handling any variety of situations, including dealing with her now former agent. I haven't read the article, but if Meghan said no thank you to an offer & informed her agent that she was getting out of acting.... then that's that! People don't need to always know why we make the decisions we make. Perhaps they previously had a more easy flowing relationship & this news without the background reasoning, may have sounded surprising or confusing to the agent. Bottom line, if Meghan handled it all per her contract with her agent, she didn't owe her any additional personal information, even if the agent expected it! I can totally believe that by that time, if her agent gave Meghan any pushback, that Meghan was being advised to keep things professional & to let anything further be handled by her attorney (who likely was in the know & possibly even receiving guidance from Harry's team). This had to have been an awkward & dicey time for Meghan, because I'm sure she was being met with confusion, by a variety of people in her life, who did not yet understand why Meghan was doing the things she was doing & making the decisions that she was making. Of course now it all makes sense, but I'm sure it was confusing to some in her life, during that time. To me, it makes me respect Meghan that much more! She didn't speak or leak & held herself above the fray, while remaining professional all the way. Just like Kate was, during her pre-engagement time with William, here we see that Meghan showed the same quality & dignity during her pre-engagement time with Harry! Kudos to both men, for choosing such wonderful Women of Character!! :)

  49. Okay, I’ve finally found some time to share more than a sentence or two about my fashion opinion. Firstly, I don’t like the bootcut pants/pointy boots which I already stated in response to someone else’s comment. BUT I don’t know enough about fashion to have any ACTUAL critique about it other than that it looks dated to me. The color of her coat is one of my favorite colors for outerwear—I think it’s a color that looks good on everyone. I love her hair and I love her natural makeup.

As for her choice in shoes for the event—I don’t see them as an issue really. I think when Harry and Meghan go to any event, they get an itinerary because they are obviously VIPs, good PR and all that. So I’m sure she saw “meeting athletes on the track” or something along that line. And probably what stuck out to her was the “meeting athletes” part. I’m just trying to think about what I would do and I would probably say “I’m meeting all these athletes, hearing their story, becoming more publicly involved, etc so I need to look professional.” I don’t think I would’ve thought “Also, what are good shoes for a track event?” However, clothes are important at official events and so maybe this was a learning experience—not only does she have to think about what she’ll be doing, she also has to consider WHERE she’s doing it.

Or, she might also be like “This is my style, I like it, I’ll keep doing it, thanks!” In which case, good for you, Meghan! :)

Overall, she is doing her best to look professional. She looks like she’s at work, which is good, because she is at work. And I like that because she’s conveying to the people that see her, whether in person or in the media, that’s shes taking her new job and her new role seriously.

    1. One of the hardest things is to sit back & watch bunk being printed about those you know! I really feel for Meghan & those who love & care about her! The hardest thing is to sit on your hands, even if you know you have info that could set the record straight! But that's what a Truly good friend does! One Never speaks! "Silence is Golden"! Those who truly know the person, know the truth or know & trust who the person really is & Never Never speak to Anyone (let alone press) about them!

I completely agree. True friends say nothing - and less than nothing to the press. Same for family. I avoid reading this stuff as frankly in my view it is 98% fiction and/or mean spirited drivel.

  51. 🌸 wait a minute though. In all fairness, this is not the first time we have heard something like what her former agent shared. And I am not saying anyone should blame Meghan for anything so please don’t misconstrue what I’m saying. Think about what this seems like to the public. It isn’t just the agent’s comments. Look at the whole picture. It is apparently true that Meghan, upon finding success in “Suits”, broke up with her producer husband (they’d been together for nine years), by mailing the wedding rings to him vial mail. In addition, for obvious reasons, Meghan, via the Palace, released a statement concerning members of her family, “I don’t know these people”. And to Joe Public that could confirm her ex-friend’s (don’t remember her name) allegations, and, like it or not, comments from the family she said she doesn’t know, lol. So it could easily seem to people that Meghan is concise in moving forward.
I personally don’t think her agent was being slurious. That would perhaps adversely affect her business.
I think she was just sharing what happened. It would seem odd to receive numerous flowery e-mails over the years with plenty of hearts and xoxo’s and then receive the one she received.
Even Robin Roberts, of Good Morning America, after they did a segment asking what is Meghan like, said, that after consideration, she thought that Meghan could best be “summed up” as “Shrewd”. So there does seem to be a pattern. Not downing Meghan so don’t get me wrong. I am talking about the pattern.
Perhaps if Meghan acquired her own PR person they might take a look the content of comments that are continuing to emerge across the board and take those into consideration. I think, given Meghan’s penchant for PR, given “The Tig” and her Instagram, etc., that she would want to maybe address those things in an indirect, artful and fun way, but address them nonetheless.

    2. SG,
Thank you. These things you mention are part of the issues that have some people really worked up about Harry and Meghan marrying. Part of me wishes it would be addressed, but then part of me also realizes that addressing it could make it worse. I just wish Harry and Meghan the best, and I hope they’re genuinely happy together. After all, Harry has had some interesting times in his past as well, so no one is perfect here.

    3. Dearest SG, we still only know the bits & pieces that others have chosen to share...... it's always hard, when the only info out there is not only one sided, but also has as much of a mean spirited angle as possible. Unless we start hearing from her current close friends, or from Meghan herself..... we'll never know her side of the story. So for me, I'm opting for taking any info coming out with a large dose of salt. I guess I'm jaded by what I've seen of "friends or sources (even Robin Roberts=Press)" sharing their opinions or impressions.... Even Robin Roberts, or anyone who had interviewed Meghan in the past, only got to see Meghan's Actress side, as she was promoting a project or even herself as a philanthropist. No one really "knows" the "real" us, unless we've deemed them safe for letting our guard down. Often that's a pretty small & tight group. Just last year, a person I knew well (in The Industry) was ripped apart in the press very publicly & by her ex & her well known BFF! They were covering themselves, because they were exploiting her & completely twisting up any info about her! It just can be a nasty business all the way around! That's why I relish my privacy & being behind the camera! Just my experience & my little 'ol 2 cents again. :(

    4. Meghan has committed no crime so there's nothing she needs to defend or explain to the public in regards to this "pattern" as you describe it. Once she's done with a relationship, she's done. She's in her late 30s so you can expect that there are people she's moved on from for whatever reason. Those who want to use that as evidence of some kind of character flaw will while others will realize that she's simply human and remain unbothered.

    6. 🌸 P.S. (typical, lol). From the sound of it, it wasn’t just the cessation of flowery hearts and kisses e-mails. From the photos, going on vacation together, dinners, etc., it seems like, looks like, it was a friendship and not just business situation, yeh? Not that Meghan was at fault at all, but, from a PR standpoint, yet again, the same story is being told.
Maybe, since Meghan says she doesn’t follow her headlines, she doesn’t even know. Maybe that’s best as the stories will be a thing of the past as she enters the hallowed halls of Royalty. And with aplomb. :)

    7. "Whole picture." Key words here, IMO, SG. I see where you're coming from, because I definitely see a common thread. IF we are referring to the Mirror article, I did not read anything so terrible in it. As a matter of fact, I thought it was a very diplomatic expression of Gina's disappointment. I do understand that Meghan had to yield to the new life she was taking on, but I think this article is more about the **manner** in which MM moved forward rather than the choice itself.

I want to stress, again, that my interest in Meghan (and Kate) has to do with each of them being "the one" in the lives of "Diana's boys". Having followed Diana from February 24, 1981, I am interested in THEIR happiness. If H&M celebrate their 5th, 10th, 15th, etc., wedding anniversaries and are as happy as they appear to be today, I could care less about the details. Truly! But on more than one occasion I admit to question marks floating around in my brain and I do hope that MM is in it because she loves Harry 1000% and is prepared to be in his corner all the way.

To be honest, I did think that the KP statement released as a plea for H&M's privacy was "encouraged" by MM as it revealed that they were dating. Prior to that, I had no idea who she was or that she and Harry were dating. And, along the way, there were occasions when I thought she was confirming the relationship such as the Whole Foods outing. And the engagement interview comment reference to not knowing much about Harry. It did sound disingenuous to my ears.

    8. And in all fairness these are third party perspectives being printed by the daily mail. They have constructed a narrative and every story will be written with that bias in mind. If you watch the people she considers her friends Priyanka Chopra, Abigail Spencer and her cast mates from suits, when they are asked anything about Meghan that they cannot speak about they deflect the question. That is what friends do they have your back even when they do not understand why you are doing certain things. As her agent and as her friend she should never have spoken especially in areas she was not clear about such as why she snapped or asked her lawyers to respond. Me thinks she was disappointed not to have profited from Meghan's popularity and comes off sounding like another person with an axe to grind against Meghan. A true friend and agent would have told Meghan I understand what you are going through how can I support you instead of knowing how her life was changing keep barraging her with opportunities that she could not fulfill and still expecting a positive outcome

surfer girl, I am quite certain that Meghan knows what she wants and very probably - from what we "know" about how she deals with "leaving her "old" world behind" - she obviously deals with "new beginnings" in a specific way. And that seems to be "getting rid" quite thoroughly of anything (or anyone)that "doesn´t fit" into her "new world". Whether that is "cold-hearted" and "mean" or "just" consequential - that´s certainly not an easy question to answer. I can understand both point of views. At the end of the day, though, I am pretty convinced that you need a certain "shrewdness" and "single-mindedness" in order to marry into a "high-profile" royal family. Otherwise you won´t be able to "survive" the pressure and the sheer craziness for very long. I can understand those, though, who argue that her actions with people who "no longer belong to her new world" are in contradiction to her humanitarian work and "message".
It will be very interesting to watch her in her new role over the years... whether she is "caring, loving Meghan" or "super-ambitious, self-centered, heartless Meghan" - or something in between! I for one am just curious. I like what I´ve seen so far, but I´m aware of the fact that there might be different aspects to her personality that might not be so "positive" after all... She´s human, right? ;-)))
I don´t think, though, that she will "address" all those reports about her. She´s said so herself, that she doesn´t read what´s written about her, plus, if you start reacting in any kind of way to all these reports, it´s a never-ending story and a fight you just can´t win. So I guess she will just continue the way she thinks fit. Which might probably be the best way to do it anyway....

Then it could also include where & how all the ladies Royal Clothes are stored & I wonder if they are stored separately by season, or if they are switched out? So many questions that I'd loooove to know the answers to! I think it would be facinating!! :) Article or Book, I'd gobble either one up! Great Idea SG!!! :) xo

I find it so interesting that people often comment that Meghan is dressing in a North American way, or that people don’t like something because style is different in the UK. Being from neither the US or the UK I have never (and still don’t) noticed a difference.
Unless I am wearing something specific ethnic I would classify what I wear as Western, not South African. When I moved to London for a while I wore the same clothes I did in SA, just adding some good coats in winter. I still wear a lot of the clothes I boaght in London and nobody every comments that I have a London look.
I am sure you will find just as many women in the UK dressing similar to Meghan as you would find women in North America having a different style.
It feels like people are creating this artificial distinction while it is probably just a personal style.

We blame Meghan for his behavior while his former entourage continues to betray ...
If I was a client of his agent I would change immediably no professionalism.
In short Meghan hopes that Harry, who also has a sacred past is worth it
I'm tired of all this rancor and these people who leave no benefit of the whole

  55. Meghan’s hair is out of her face and draped beautifully around her head! I have been waiting for this style, which avoids veiling her beauty. There has been previous discussion about the desirability of wearing her hair natural. I would like that, too, but as long as she has a cut with so many straight layers, i like her hair down.

The debate about jeans and heels I find quite amusing. It is difficult to think of tight jeans as in any way professional. This is a casual look, given the jeans and open coat and sports shirt. The comment I really like from above is the remark that style and fashion do not necessarily coincide. I find the jeans a bit long and awkward, but I had no idea what continent or decade they belong in!

All in all, Meghan looks very nice. If anything appears out of date, it is the short, light trench coat, which I wore in the 1960s, but it suits the blond lady with her standard levis and tennies and pony tail. She looksp quite nice, too.

It is indeed nice to see Meghan with Harry at an event which is his creation and central interest. The rudderless teenager he was has matured into an able and compassionate leader.

  57. SG, I also wondered when MM moved permanently into the Nott Cot, where are her clothes hanging? One closet, then two, then three...

I do think MM is shrewd. But these attributes seem to be bad when applied to MM yet good when applied to successful men. Grace Kelly was pursued by her prince because he liked what he saw, not because they happened to fall in love as two innocents. Imagine the worst---that MM pursued Harry behind the scenes. What is wrong with that? He wanted a partner. She wanted a partner with fame and wanted children. And who doesn't like Harry? I don't imagine MM just accidentally fell into all her successes; she had to be clever. Maybe she has told Harry that she wanted to meet him with a serious intent. If he had the same ambition toward her, we would find it sweet. I did read that her best friend from college went to her SoHo party, so she remained loyal to that person for no reason other than friendship. I think we want MM to have just chanced upon her relationship with Harry, more like we imagine Kate did, but there's no need for that.

Perhaps she thought Trevor was her best friend and after just 1 year of actual marriage, she realized she could be very happy without him. Better to come to that realization than to continue forever---maybe he didn't want kids. Maybe he didn't want her to pursue humanitarian work. Who knows? I would mail back the rings, too---the alternative being to have a meeting and all the drama of that. :)

PR improvement---I wonder if doing/saying nothing is the best way.Otherwise, you get a dialog going. I don't know.
