Meghan in Commonwealth Brands for CHOGM Youth Forum Reception!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended a reception with delegates from the Commonwealth Youth Forum at Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre today.

Harry and Meghan arrived just before noon for the event.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is one of the most important events on the royal calendar this year. Since Monday, leaders from all member countries gathered in London and Windsor to reaffirm common values, address the shared global challenges faced and agree how to work to create a better future for all Commonwealth citizens, particularly young people. In terms of historic significance, it marks the biggest summit ever held in Britain. The Royal family have been out in force with a series of forums, receptions and meetings.

Meghan's participation has been described as "highly unusual" and "unprecedented" by veteran royal reporters, who revealed it is "highly unusual" for fiancés to take part in events of such magnitude pre-wedding.

The summit is not only a significant gathering for the Commonwealth; on a personal note it's a week of particular importance for Harry and Meghan. Last week it was revealed Prince Harry has become patron of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust. This new youth charity, of which Her Majesty is also patron, provides a platform for young change-makers across the Commonwealth in the areas of education, sport, health and the environment.  On Monday, to mark the beginning of CHOGM the Palace confirmed Harry's most prestigious role to date as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador. Both roles signal a long-term focus on the promoting Commonwealth youth and links both at home and abroad for the couple.

The Sunday Times reports:

'Hours after taking up his new position as a Commonwealth youth ambassador, Prince Harry announced that it would be a job share — with his wife-to-be, Meghan Markle. He said that Ms Markle would join him in his work because she was “hugely excited” about helping young people to have their voices heard.
In a speech at the start of the summit, he said that he was “incredibly grateful” that the “woman I am about to marry” would be joining him in his new job.
Prince Harry, 33, and Ms Markle, 36, are expected to undertake overseas tours of the Commonwealth and convene young people to hear their ideas on how to give them a bigger platform.'

You can view Prince Harry's terrific speech below (there's a very sweet cheer when Meghan is mentioned).

Continuing the focus on young people, today's reception offered an opportunity for Meghan and Harry to meet delegates involved in the Youth Forum sessions throughout the week.

Meghan greeted delegates.

The 2018 Youth Forum’s theme of "Powering Our Common Future" reflects the CHOGM theme of "Towards a Common Future" and illustrates the powerful potential of young people across the Commonwealth in devising solutions to complex global challenges as well as their ability to bring forward meaningful recommendations to the Heads of Government meeting.

The Forum is encouraging young people to debate challenges facing their generation, and agree youth-led initiatives to influence decision-makers.

A video from Emily Nash.

Delegates told Prince Harry, who opened the forum earlier this week, and Ms. Markle what they have learnt from each other over the course of the last few days.

The couple met past winners of the Queen's Leaders Award.

Harry and Meghan spoke to LGBTI campaigners at length. I was very interested to read Meghan's words to Jacob Thomas who won a Queen's Young Leaders Award for his work in the LGBTI community. More from The Mail:

'Jacob Thomas, from Australia, who won a Queen’s Young Leaders award for reducing the rate suicide in the LBGTI community in his home country, said: ‘Miss Markle said, and these were her exact words, that this is a basic human rights issue, not one about sexuality.
‘Prince Harry said that what was so amazing was that ten or so years ago we wouldn’t have been having this conversation and how incredible it was that we now were.’
Mr Thomas said the prince also admired his eye-catching grey leopard-print coat.
‘He loved my coat and I told him that he couldn’t have it. He said not to worry, he had three similar ones at home,’ he laughed.'

Youth leaders gathered from all 53 member countries.

The Mail Online reports:

'Miss Markle, 36, who has given up her acting career to devote herself to being a full-time royal, has no previous links to the Commonwealth, but has worked with the UN as a women’s advocate for Political Participation and Leadership and undertaken several humanitarian missions.
And she was clearly impressed by what she heard from the group of inspirational young men and women. You’re so energised,’ she said, ‘you’ve got this umbrella to hold you together. It’s incredible. So stay in touch, maximise it.’
Karuna Rana, 29, Mauritius, coordinator of the Commonwealth Youth Climate Change Network, complimented Miss Markle on the campaigning she has previously done on the issue of women’s rights. The pair discussed the HeForShe campaign, which encourages men to join women in the fight for equality.
Miss Rana suggested that Miss Markle start her own SheForShe, to show that women were supportive of each other too.
‘She knew all about HeForShe and that she really liked the idea and that maybe she would consider it after May 20,’ she said.'

Over the next year, Harry and Meghan will carry out several visits to Commonwealth countries with a focus on young people.

Princess Eugenie was also in attendance, she wore her floral print Whistles dress.

It has been a week full of memorable moments; a spectacular rainforest design was projected onto Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy Project. The Canopy works to unite the whole Commonwealth family and save one of the world’s most important natural habitats – forests.

An additional element of importance to the summit: on Friday, leaders will decide if Prince Charles will succeed as his mother's successor as Head of the Commonwealth. The role of Head of Commonwealth is not automatically passed to Charles when the Queen passes, and it is said Her Majesty is eager for the decision to be made this week.

Meghan looked chic in the Altuzarra Audrey Button-Detailed Ottoman Midi Dress today.

The Audrey features a double breasted front fastening, a sleeveless design, a belted waist, a fitted silhouette, an asymmetric style and vertical stripes. The piece is currently available at Net-A-Porter, Nordstrom, My Theresa, Neiman Marcus and FarFetch.

The £1,450 dress is described as:

"For Pre-Spring '18, Joseph Altuzarra is inspired by the rural styles of women in Bretagne, France - this 'Audrey' dress references their aprons. It's crafted from pinstriped ottoman that has a subtle luster, and detailed with large buttons to adjust the shoulder straps and open up the slit at the skirt. Define your waist with the complementing detachable belt."

A closer look at the details.

Meghan has been a fan of the brand for years. More on its background:

'Joseph Altuzarra is a young, multicultural designer whose personal background and practical experience have given him a unique perspective and a refined vision and aesthetic. Born in Paris, Joseph headed to New York after graduating to pursue his love of fashion.
In 2008, at the age of 25, Joseph launched his own line, ALTUZARRA with the label’s identity ly ing somewhere between the legacy of French culture and The Big Apple’s pulsating energy. Since its first season, ALTUZARRA has grown in the breadth and depth of its collections. Body-conscious, flattering and feminine clothing is ALTUZARRA’s trademark.'

We also saw Meghan sporting a selection of brands from Commonwealth countries with a special nod to Australia ahead of the Invictus Games in Sydney. Meghan's Marguerite Blazer is by Australia women's brand Camilla And Marc. It features padded shoulders and a cinched-in waistline.

Meghan carried the Oroton Avalon Zip Top Crossbody Bag. A gorgeous style by the Australian accessories brand (with thanks to Perth Fashion).

Meghan's Mirror identified Meghan's shoes as the Tamara Mellon Paramour Suede Heels. The $475 style are made in Italy.

The British fashion designer is the former chief creative officer and co-founder of Jimmy Choo.

Very sadly, Tamra's ex husband Matthew Mellon passed away yesterday. More from The Guardian:

'Billionaire banking heir and transatlantic personality Matthew Mellon has died at 54, reportedly while attending a rehabilitation centre in Mexico to deal with an admitted opioid dependency, after years of struggling with drug addiction. His cousin Peter Stephaich confirmed Mellon’s death but declined on Tuesday to provide any details.
Mellon comes from the Mellon and Drexel families, of Bank of New York Mellon and Drexel Burnham Lambert. Although he chiefly lived in New York he also had a home in London’s exclusive Eaton Place. He married his first wife, Tamara Yeardye, co-founder of Jimmy Choo shoes, at Bleinheim Palace in 2000 at a lavish ceremony attended by friends that included Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley, and the couple became a fixture on the British fashion scene. Mellon also served for a time as the chairman of the finance committee of the Republican party in New York.
Mellon is survived by Tamara Mellon, his second wife, fashion designer Nicole Hanley Mellon, and three children.'

Meghan accessorised with her $375 Les Plaisirs De Birks Gold Bar Earrings. The Canadian jewellery brand has become Meghan's favourite in recent months.

Meghan completed the look with rings and a gold bracelet.

UPDATE: Shortly after this event, a reader named Anne kindly got in touch to tell me she believed Meghan's moonstone bracelet is by Tai Jewellery. Following a huge amount of research and investigative work by my fellow bloggers at What Meghan Wore, the amazing Susan C searched through every close up image she could find and contacted the brand. Susan C heard back from Tai, and they believe the piece is theirs. Susan C also very kindly created the graphic below for me to post, she actually owns the bracelet and used her own images.  The $65 Asymmetrical  Circle Stone Open Bracelet is available on their website.

Before we sign off for today, Kensington Palace just confirmed engagements for Harry and Meghan next Wednesday for Anzac Day:

The dress is not really my "kettle of fish" (this style always reminds me of a North Sea Coast beach chair, I don´t know why but I can´t help it, lol!!)
JEEZ, THOSE HEELS!! I´d be in the hospital by now with a broken ankle, for sure!! :-))))))
The colour combination, the blazer, the shoes (if I was able to wear them without endangering my health) and the bag - get all a "thumbs up" from me!!

    1. 😃 I hear you, Eve. I think it's a more casual look. Had she kept the blazer on (and without the strap across her chest), I think it would be a great look.

Again, I do like the pieces individually .

      Delete
    2. P.S. I was reminded of her polo appearance.

    3. Ladies I agree. Maybe if she had keep the jacket on it would have worked better. She is such a beautiful young lady.

      Delete
    4. Add me to the "should have left on the jacket" group. Personally, I dislike the dress. There is nothing about it that enhances her beauty. It looks like it was made for girls 12 to 15. I have loved all of her other looks!

    5. OR...perhaps a blouse or turtleneck under with a bit of color pop? Or even a white, grey, or navy top. The outfit is reportedly modeled after a French maid's pinafore(not the short skirted flirty kind of maid--a young country French woman of yore) which would have been worn over a dress or blouse as an apron-type garment. So it might work.
It was in contrast to the rather covered-up,sedate appearance of the other guests and she really stood out. Maybe that was the point. It reminded me of the Toronto games appearance in ripped jeans--an attempted statement, I guess. Actually, as the blazer really seems mis-matched and she had it just draped over her shoulders, I wonder if an assistant offered it as a last-minute cover-up? Not sure at what point the jacket was removed and for how long.
I refuse to discuss the shoes as my jealousy might come through.
Great purse. I agree that the cross body use disrupts the dress's line. Perhaps as a shoulder bag.
I think Meghan is still feeling her way, trying to reach a midpoint between personal taste and royal professional requirements. She just needs time. Anyway, the other attendees seemed quite engaged with her and I doubt they gave a flying fig whether she bared her arms or not. It WAS a reception for YOUTH-a youthful look was in order. If she were some 70 year old dowager... but she's not. She's got it and she isn't afraid to flaunt it.
One worry--her engagement ring seems to be much looser with her apparent bridal weight loss. A guard ring might be a good idea.

    6. I have noticed that she is wearing the bag on her right shoulder in some photos, apparently, after she removed the jacket. With the jacket over her shoulders, it may have been difficult to wear the purse on her shoulder.
A thought--there is a photo or video of Meghan removing her coat at an event recently. It looked as though an aide stepped between her and the camera at that point. What was captured on camera was somewhat awkward. By wearing the jacket on her shoulders she can easily shrug it off and avoid such a moment. She may even have been advised to avoid removal of her coat in front of press after that .

  4. Well, I love the shoes. That said, the rest of this outfit is just so disappointing. The blazer slung over her shoulders is baffling and, in my opinion, ruins the interesting cut of the blazer. I know Meghan is a fan of wearing blazers in this way but looking at the photos the blazer looks like a crumpled mess. The dress is lovely for a summer garden party but I believe she looks far too informal to be representing the royal family at an official forum.

    1. Yes! I thought the same thing @ anonymous 12:36! This is far too informal for the occasion. Cute for a private little picnic with her prince but not for a very important first meeting with Commonwealth leaders. I admire her keeping true to her style but one can easily do that while still dressing appropriately for the new, very high profile role she is taking on. My biggest pet peeve has been the bags slung casually across every outfit she has worn to date. It looks cluncky and as if she dashed out for a day of browsing the shops. I'm surprised palace aids haven't pointed out that it's totally unnecessary to carry a bag constantly on engagements. Is she expecting to need her phone, buy a round of drinks for the young people on her visits? She should have her PS carry it so she looks unhindered and approachable.

    2. Royal ladies famously carry handbags. The Queen carries one inside the Palace. Frankly, I'm glad Meghan carries a bag, since it's usually the shoes and bag I like best in her looks, and that is true again today.

  5. Meghan is no country girl! Always in current style and at the same time classic and appropriate. Meghans bag collection is one to be envied. Following her on The Tig, accessorizing with shoes and bag is not new to her in making her look pop. Such important work she joins Harry in and doing it in her own personal style.

  6. While I love that she continues to wear neutrals and modern styles, this is a bit of a miss for me. Without the jacket the dress looks like overalls! Great shoes though. Excited for Meghan’s new role and all her engagements this week! She’s keeping you busy, Charlotte!

  7. Do not like the on the shoulder jacket look she's going for, have never been a fan of that. I'm also not keen on the shoes, but I do like the dress though. I like that she hasn't completely succumbed to the royal protocol and does her own thing in terms of style. It's nice to see what she wears even if I don't like it!

  8. Wow, Meghan continues to slay with her shoe game!! I love those heels! The dress is nice however, IMO, not too sure about the strappy shoulders for a work event when everyone else (men and women) is in a suit. I think the dress would have been more business appropriate if it was full coverage on the top...I think it would have looked amazing with cap sleeves and still summery. But overall, it’s a small complaint. I do like the pinstripes and asymmetry of the dress, and the length.

They look great together and I’m glad to see Meghan getting to/wanting to participate in CHOGM!!

    1. I couldn’t have said it better myself. I love the dress too, just not for this occasion. Cap sleeves would have made it! I agree her look today is too casual for the event where others are wearing blazers.

    2. Well said, inthekitchen! I agree completely. I'm really interested in seeing how her ensemble would have changed if she wore the blazer and kept it for the duration of the event.

Those SHOES are simply divine. One thing's for sure, MM's got mad style and this look exudes her personality!

  9. A+ on the accessories—love those shoes, the bag, and earrings. I’d probably even like the jacket if not draped over the shoulders.

She is going to be a huge asset to Harry. Not only is she suited (ban pun) to her new role she looks like she is very happy with it.its so critical to have a life partner that gets ones "job" and can support it!

    4. I love that she has her own style. I love that she is obviously engaged with the work. I love how happy she and Harry look. But “personal style” needs to transform a bit to a royal personal style. I’m hoping that when she’s sort of “official” she’ll bring her style along a bit (as we saw Kate do. But just to be clear, I don’t want her to look like Kate, but rather Royal Meghan).

    1. Penny, I totally agree with you regarding Harry’s apparent fashion evolution. All of the blue that he, and if I may add kindly, William wear is not a polished or sophisticated look all the time. Perhaps boring is my honest opinion. As for Meghan, I couldn’t help but add my two cents for what it’s worth. Love the blazer if she had worn it the entire time. The off the shoulder look with the cross body- although both gorgeous- looked like she was caring something cumbersome beneath the blazer. Had the top been a cream 3/4 length silk sweater with the skirt of the dress- no buttons- or a navy skirt matching the blazer and the dress top print silk sweater underneath the blazer, I would have been thrilled. The shoes are adorable and she wears the style so well. But I think a lower heel would have looked better and be more comfortable. But glad to see no basic pumps with so many great professional and stylish options to choose from! Thank you Charlotte for giving so much information to your readers.

  19. I like the dress but she should have kept the jacket on. I don't think a sleeveless, strap dress is professional or appropriate for this sort of setting. I see also that Ms Markle is not wearings stockings (again), a departure from other women in the royal family when participating in official events. I realize it's not a "rule" per se, but wearing hose does result in a more polished look. But, it's her prerogative, and she can do as she pleases. I personally prefer the more conservative, polished look worn by other women when they're appearing as representatives of the royal family. On her own, in non-official outings, no problem. When representing the royal family it's another story, and I'd gently recommend she try to respect the role she'll be playing. I'm sure she has her heart in the right place.

  21. I've been keeping track of the events this week as I'm particularly interested in the discussions around conservation efforts. But on another note, I'm trying to understand Meghan's decision in putting together THIS outfit for today's reception... the dress is just so casual for a reception during such an important week. And the blazer draped over her shoulders looks extremely uncomfortable. The mom in me just wants to neaten her up and put her arms through those sleeves lol!

And can someone please explain to me why she has a bag slung over her like one would do when walking the dog? Meghan is more trendy than she is stylish - there's a fine line between the both and unfortunately she gets it wrong more than she gets it right (in my opinion anyway).

  22. Harry is clearly in his element in this new role. Question, if by chance the Queen is not reelected head of the Commonwealth on Friday will this effect the official role Harry has now assumed on behalf of the crown?
Only yesterday did it come to my attention that the Queens role was not a matter of succession and several leaders have signified that they should elect the head from within themselves. Mrs. May seemed to skirt the issue when asked. It is not my intent to turn this into a political conversation I just was interested in how this would actually effect Harry and Meghans new role. As a US citizen I am not knowledgeable in matters of all policy foreign.

    1. USA- I believe HM has the position for life. Other than greeting, receiving, and hosting duties, I am not sure how the Queen carries out the role at this point. She no longer travels outside the UK. Charles would likely take a very hands-on approach. He has been representing the Queen in her role as Monarch; I am not sure how much has been in her role as Commonwealth Head.
However, Charles will not automatically be the next Head when he becomes king. He must be chosen by the CHOG membership in a process that I do not understand. I think the heavy promotion of his sons and the Queens's placing of Harry in a leadership role could be seen as Charles jockeying for a favorable position. I predict a well-publicized and photographed Charles-Harry-Meghan moment at some point in the next two days. Apparently, the decision will be made Friday. It would be a blow to the BRF if Charles is not chosen.
Just a thought... What if Prince Andrew were chosen the next CHOG Head? Haha. I imagine, if Charles is not next, it will go to an Aussie or some other country than the UK. The Caribbean and African Commonwealth countries have seemed quite noticeable, particularly Kenya.
I can't think Charles would not be next, but...there are rumblings here and there.

  23. Oh, my. I loved the green dress Meghan wore for her first interview with Harry but have been so disappointed since (except for the Easter dress and coat). Today, no exception. Nothing about today’s look was flattering or aporopriate. If the jacket had stayed on, it might have been better but wouldn’t have worked with the tie sash. And the shoes...These super-tall, stiletto heels are terrible for the body. Women, particularly women in a position to influence fashion trends and women’s health, should eschew them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree about the shoes. Women in positions of power could have such a positive impact on showing all other women that wearing an item that is not healthy for you and is designed to elongate legs and make the butt appear to stick out is not necessary any longer - your brain and personality are enough. If high heels had no impact at all of the health of your feet and posture then one could argue that a woman should be free to wear what she likes but the truth is these shoes are not good for you.

      Delete
    2. That’s quite a blanket statement to make. Women should be allowed to express themselves. And if she doesn’t have a health issue with them why should she change for a vague and hardly proven “health problem”. I wear them everyday and feel fine. People who have problems with heels often have weak feet and calf muscles. And sometimes if that is your body type you find that a different shoe works better. Meghan might not have those issues. I assume she should always have her skin covered because of skin cancer? Or always wear natural fabrics due to skin allergies? I feel like this is an arbitrary health concern for her to be responsible for.

      Delete
    3. Meghan has bunions but I think she managed to have surgery or something, I saw an article about this kind of issue months ago.
Btw I think she could wear what she most feels comfortable in and I think she likes stiletto heels a lot so why not wearing them?

I agree, this time, although I sometimes like to wear a bag this way, especially when I´m in a big city with lots of people around, I have my arms free and still have an eye on the bag - in this environment it looked "too casual". It´s an all-important week of a very "official" event - I personally don´t mind, but I know how these things can matter to a lot of people and I understand why.
Maybe, though, she´s one of those people where handbags have a terrible way of continuously falling off the shoulders (I have a friend who struggles with that) which would lead to a very "annoying" constant grabbing of the strap of the handbag to put it back in place.
A "real" handbag without the strap keeps one arm "busy" all the time, too, which can be very distracting also...
I´m not complaining, just observing... it´s definitely still very much "her" style, which I like, but I get if some are seeing it as "too informal"....
What is kind of "overshining" everything else for me, is her personality. She strikes me as warm and very interested and, yes, HAPPY to be there and meet all the people and get to know them and what they do. There seems to be an unwavering enthusiasm and interest which is almost contagious... I hope she will be able to keep that in the years to come, it will be her most valuable asset (ok, and most probably keep her sane, lol!!)!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great bag and jewellery as always. And of course generally she looks lovely. Nevertheless, the dress is way too casual, though it might have been "saved" if she had just kept her blazer on (with her arms IN!) Meghan has a penchant for things that can be tied up in the middle and while this looks alright with coats, it doesn't seem to work with this dress. Clearly still on the learning curve...

I don't like the dress myself, but really don't like it at this event. It would be perfectly appropriate at a polo match or summer engagement but I think it's too casual for today. I don't hate the blazer draped across the shoulders but imagine it would get awkward to keep it on with constant hand shaking and leaning. I am guessing that is why it was ditched pretty early on. And the bag. It is very nice BUT awkward and almost inappropriate(?) to be wearing a cross body bag at meet and greet events. As an adult in a formal, professional setting, it's not a great representation. This isn't an impromptu walk about and you just need to quickly free your hands. But the shoes are killer and her hair and makeup look terrific. And I still pine for those earrings!!

  28. I love the look but am curious as to how Meghan's style will change post-wedding. Now, she seems to stick to a lot of monochromes, frequently wears trousers, and today was even sleeveless. I'll be curious to see if she slips into the royal uniform of knee-length skirts, bright colors, and covered arms after the wedding or if she continues to "get away with" her current much more modern and chic look. I would love to be a fly on the wall listening to the behind-the-scenes conversations regarding her wardrobe during official engagements!

    1. As far as we know there's no written law that a royal woman must wear coat dresses, florals and primary colours. I hope she never dresses like Kate or the Queen. She has her own style and she's a breath of fresh air! I'd also like to note that Kate has worn bare arms and short skirts many, many times.

    2. I hope she keeps her style exactly how it is. It’s modern and chic. She will be the sister in law of the king I think her image has a bit more flexibility than being the monarch or their spouse.

I do not think that the dress is ‘casual’. I can understand if it’s not your jam, but the outfit is nor casual in my view. It is fitting for a day reception. I would have liked to see the blazer on, just to see, but it is snowing where I live and I understand it has warmed up in London!
She looks great and engaged in the work.

    1. I totally agree. The dress is really chic and it's appropriate for the occasion--a youth forum. I understand that folks expect a certain dress code from the royals, but there is nothing wrong with shaking things up a bit. This dress and the accessories are very contemporary and of the moment. This is the type of dress code that is acceptable in a lot of modern work setting across many fields.

Upstate Diva and fictionmama (love you names, btw!!), you know what? I would agree with you if it was a hot, hot July afternoon in London, for me this dress has an incredibly "summer vibe", but in April it somehow would have looked more "dressed up", if she had had the blazer on.
I agree about the youth forum - but this is THE Commonwealth HEAD OF GOVERNMENT Meeting - it´s VERY official, look at Harry even wearing a dark tie - and Meghan wasn´t attending as "Ms Markle", but already as representative of HM, the Head of the Commonwealth. This is not "just" a working visit, but almost like a part of a State Visit.

      Delete
    3. Exactly, Eve!:) To @Fictionmama's point, its worth pointing out that at this "youth" event ALL of the young people are appropriately dressed in professional business attire (not a bare shoulder in sight) It stands to reason that Meghan's attire should match (if not exceed!) the formality and professionalism that the youth are exhibiting, would it not?:)

      Delete
    4. It is a youth event and if it was a youth event at a local community center in the city in the summer, the dress(although not my cup of tea) would definitely be appropriate. But it's a meeting of the heads of state and the youth representing them, so I feel like it's too casual. And Anon 16:44 is correct-the youth are far more dressed up than Meghan is.

  34. Love the shoes, hair and blazer! However, I think the dress and crossbody bag are way to casual for this type of summit/meeting. At the least, should have worn the blazer fully.

      Delete
    2. Unless she’s not embarrassed. I think her outfit is great. Covered shoulders is so dated and puritanical. It’s not inappropriately revealing. Meghan dresses very much of the fashion now. I never understand this moving target with the royal family. We want them to be fashionable but not too fashionable?

    3. Yes. I agree with this sentiment. We have to be careful not to sound like the issue is the revealing of shoulders. A woman can still look and be professional and have bare arms/shoulders.

I do love the dress and her styling with cross-body bag, but think it misses the mark for this event. Courtside at Wimbeldon? Yes. A perfect choice! An event tied to something nautical/water related/summer weather? Yes. Of course. She just looks a bit out of place in the photos compared to everyone else. I think the suit jacket is also a very beautiful piece but the structure in the shoulders isn't right for something to drape over her shoulders. It would look stunning over a bold colored sheath dress. All that said... I'm happy this is just the first of many engagements over the coming days. Can't wait to see what else is in store!

  38. I love this, but I thought there was protocol about showing skin in general. I am not sure I would wear this dress to work, even in a Heatwave . I generally think arms are ok, but this is essentially a beautiful sundress. If she had kept the blazer on, it would be ok. I am not comparing her to Kate, but the impression was given that kate had to dress a certain way , which was laid down by etiquette and protocol. She looks lovey today, but it does seem confusing. 1. I thought the same. A bit of a head scratcher. I know we're not supposed to compare Meghan and Kate, but it will inevitably happen as Kate has been the standard. With Kate representing the establishment and Meghan bucking tradition, it's interesting to compare the two without making it catty. I personally love Meghan's style -- the minimalism and neutral palette. It will be interesting to see if Meghan's clothing choices change after the vows.

      Delete
    2. Hi ab , iagree it’s not a catty comparison but Kate wore tights in India in 40’ and I thought it was because she was not supposed to bare her legs. Meghan looks lovely and her dress is not revealing anything but in a work environment, it’s just not seen as appropriate to have bare shoulders and back. This would look lovely with a little cardigan . I know style is very much down to an individual but you would imagine someone from a UK fashion background would be helping Meghan with her clothes while she adapts to her new role. I really like her style but we all have to dress for different occasions, work , relaxation, going out etc and Meghan has been a bit hit and miss with this so far.sinead

  40. I love everything separately, but as a total outfit it seems like a miss to me. The jacket over the shoulders is a personal pet peeve of mine and it ruins the cut of the jacket. So, I’ll focus on the positives. It’s great to see her take a very active role before she officially becomes a royal, and I hope to see great things from her after they are married.

  42. Just a few words in response to the concerns with respect to the dress and the tone it sets. I personally think it's bang on. Smart, semi-casual and lovely. Most in the room are under 30. Anything more business like or formal would send the wrong message. I think it will be interesting to watch the evolution of how young people dress when they meet these royals. My bet is that it will evolve quite quickly and one will see young people dressing with greater ease and flare. The attendees wore naturally more formal/business attire because one errs on the side of caution on such occasions. They would have not have known the tone she would set. I think we will see this change as time goes on. I think it's a huge win - thought out and deliberate.

    2. Elizabeth, you raise some interesting points about how a person in power's interpretation of a dress code can alter the tone of an event. I'm curious to see how Meghan will assess engagements on her calendar and whether her more relaxed or formal sartorial interpretations will impact the style of other attendees.

      Delete
    3. Totally agree. I think this is a very modern and appropriate way to approach business dress. It's not unusual these days.

    4. Lauren, I'm also curious. Social media will mean that these pictures are everywhere. I wonder if there will be any discernible difference in style choices by the attendees at the Women's Forum tomorrow? I am as confident as one can be, without knowing any of the facts, that she is deliberately telegraphing a message to a younger audience. :-)

      Delete
    5. I completely agree with this assessment. While some may see the dress as too informal this is only in comparison to other Royals perhaps. In reality it works perfectly well in this setting and is distinguished enough for Meghan: the Duchess / Royal. The cross body bag is no doubt being worn this way so she can engage with the attendees--gesture, shake hands, etc and it is therefore bang on for this event. I also have to point out how fab her hair looks! Wow! And, of course her bubbly personality is also shining through here!

  43. The dress looks like a home ec project. She and Harry look happy and that is what matters.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Really 14:46? I've yet to see a home ec project with the stripes perfectly lined up as these are. I thought those details exceptional. Not all ensembles worn by royals succeed in their tailoring.

On another note, I thought the comments on the dress and bag would shake down as they did. The reaction was quite predictable. However, one thing that no one has mentioned is that in every photo Meghan stands out. Perhaps its a different way of doing what the Queen has always done--making sure that she is seen. Here we see that you don't need coats in screaming block colours and granny floral prints to do that.

As others have already pointed out, it is a youth event. Harry looked amazing. I really like his style now that he has ditched the blue suits. Transitions of this sort take time to get used to. I believe we are seeing a new wave of dressing for future royals. I believe that after HM's passing the requirements for stockings and other details such as nail polish colours will relax somewhat. I don't believe that's a cause for alarm. The BRF is no longer in corsets and Buckingham Palace did not fall down. Just sayin'....

Philly, I don´t care about "no stockings" AT ALL. She´s got great legs - I don´t have them, so I either wear very sheer stockings or a long skirt (ok, mostly trousers, I have to admit! lol). If I had her legs and could stand "the cold" (I get cold easily with my legs, for some reason...lol)- they could throw all their "Royal must-dos" at me, I honestly wouldn´t care! :-))
I agree with you, that she stood out - but to me because of her personality that strongly shines through, no matter what. It kind of pushed the "clothes thing" right to the back of my mind - not for the first time, I have to say! And that´s such an important point in my humble opinion! You "forget about the clothes" - and just look at the person and the event/cause/the interaction with people - it can´t get any better than that in my opinion!
I´m REALLY curious, how or whether at all her style will evolve or get "more royal", I really am... Some exciting times ahead for Royal Fashion Watchers! ;-))

      Delete
  44. I think the issue is Meghan is confusing fashionable with stylish. The Royal family to me anyway should always look stylish and if one were to view photos of its members from the past, although the decade is eveident, they always look polish. Take princess Diana in the 1980s one of the more outlandish decades in my opinion and yet she looks beautiful and stylish. Meghan needs to veer away from trying to be fashionable and try and adopt a more timeless view to her clothes without losing an element of fashion. There is no difference in today’s choice of attire than when she accompanied Harry to the polo, in fact I think she looked far better in those photos than here. She’s an utter beauty, so actually doesn’t need to be fashionable! Just my opinion.

What does irritate me which I hope I am permitted to say is the constant hair pushing by not actually pushing behind her ear! It isn’t to get it out of her face but appears to be a ring drawing attention thing?!!

  46. I'm a teeny bit disappointed in this look. Everything looks a tad too big on her. The straps of the dress and the tie belt look like they need to be tucked in to tidy up the look. Even the shoes look a little big on her. The box blazer, albeit a lovely blazer, but looks a little skewiff, maybe if she'd worn it rather than draped it over her shoulders. As for her wearing her bag across the body, that seems to work well when she's on a walk about, but for an indoor activity, maybe just a hand held bag, similar to how she carried it at Westminster Abbey Commonwealth Service. Her smile and beauty are the best part of her look today.

No, no, no. Not a fan of this look at all. I agree that the dress is contemporary and chic, but not in this setting and I don't think it fits her at all, or if it does fit the way it's supposed to, it doesn't work for her. The shoes are lovely, but appropriate for an evening gown or edgy cocktail dress on the runway. In my humble opinion, Meghan dresses like an American celebrity and there's nothing wrong with that. That's who she is and I like that she is keeping true to herself. But the comment above that says that she isn't royal yet and so why should she bow to convention misses the mark. She may not be royal yet, but she is being treated as though she is. Everyone in the media is commenting that it is unprecedented for her to be involved in such high profile royal events before marriage. A slight change in style is required. I think she can achieve that while still keeping true to her style preferences. Just my thoughts. It all means nothing in the grand scheme of things. She and Harry are truly happy and that's all that matters. I do like Eugenie's look today. I don't get to say that very often, although she has raised the bar significantly of late.

  51. I love everything about this outfit except for the “blazer over the shoulders”. Personal pet peeve of mine. Either put it on or take it off, lol. 🙂

I hate sleeveless or strappy dresses but I like this one. The pinstripe, belt, and buttons give it a vaguely office-y look (at least here in LA), so I see why Meghan picked this dress but I’m afraid it doesn’t translate across the pond.

I’m amazed at how stylish Harry looks! I love his suit!

  53. 🌸 whoa. what’s going on with this “outfit”? The blazer over the shoulders is a total miss, as is the summer casual dress at this event. And the purse with the stripes and diagonal crossbody straps just adds to to the messiness of the draped blazer, the stripes, texture, buttons, length and draped belt of the dress. Too much going on there. :)
The shoes are cute but really high. And the straps on the shoes with this outfit just add more “busy ness”. To me, no offense to anyone, this outfit is like a little girl playing dress up who doesn’t know yet what she’s doing style wise. Not the end of the world by any means, lol, just a disappoint and question into her choices.
Nice that Harry is out of the old navy blue standbys.

  54. Hi, I hope everyone is having a good day? I haven't read any of the comments yet, as I didn't want to be influenced by anything other than my own impressions. I have never expressed my feelings about any fashion or "look" choices on either blog, unless they were fully positive. This is a first for me & I'm a tad nervous. While I was so excited for this kick off day for H&M with the Commonwealth, I was also so darn curious about what she would chose for her first "Business Commonwealth Look" (representing The Queen & all). My first thought was confusion, about why oh why she didn't actually wear that sharp blazer (instead of just having it over her shoulders as she entered) & why oh why she didn't continue to wear it inside, as part of the ensemble with her dress? It's such a sharp blazer & would have been such a sharp look, worn with the dress! It would have been so sharp! However, without the blazer, the dress just sunk to me.:( It went from potentially being a sharp part of an incredibly sharp outfit, to an awkwardly too summery looking dress, which also did emphasize the "apron look" of which the designer described as it's inspiration. I just wanted to reach into the photos & put her chic blazer back on! Such a potentially Amazing look, that just took a dive into awkwardzville in my opinion! I think the reason I finally decided to speak up about something I didn't like..... is because I Looooved the Total Ensemble & was like Whaaaa? When I saw the bla-ish turn things took when she ditched the blazer & only wore the really really summery dress, I guess I just couldn't keep quiet! I think for this time of year it was too bare looking. I'm still itching to photoshop that chic blazer back onto her!! lol lol :) I of course Looooved her bag!! She has got some Serious Bag Game!! I'm obsessed yet again! The Whole Look was !00% to me, until she ditched the blazer! Meghan..... Whyyyyy??? Now I have No idea what the rest of you thought & I'm glad I don't. Otherwise, I might not have decided to express myself so strongly about this choice she made, to wear the dress without the chic blazer! Now I'll go read what everyone else thought! :)

    1. Excellent point, Deb. She or her assistant should have read the room and recognized that the blazer, while not perfect with the dress, would have helped with the overall look. Youth from around the world are here to discuss how to change the world, and Meghan is dressed for Wimbledon or a garden party... with killer heels that would do better with a cocktail dress.

The dress itself isn't awful. I hope to see it again on her, but in a more appropriate setting.

  56. I enjoy seeing her in something different even though I don't love the look. I'll echo what others have said in that the pieces separately are great but they don't make sense together or for this occasion. She seems to be trying too hard to make a fashion statement with some of her looks. I believe someone else said that she's trendy and not stylish. I agree with this and I think she will find her royal fashion identity in the future once she has some time under her belt.

Nonetheless, it's always a treat to see her engaging with people. She seems to make a connection with every person she meets. I continue to be impressed with the way she carries herself, even if the clothes aren't spot on. In my opinion, she's nailing the most important part of her role as an ambassador for the BRF.

  57. I hate the fact that she’s got the blazer on her shoulders. If she had worn the blazer, it would have been a professional look. The dress alone is too casual a style for this event. The striped purse along with the striped dress is too much. So, solid black purse and wear the blazer- that’s my advice for appearing professional after 20+ yrs in corporate America. The shoes are fabulous and I wish I had the kind of feet that could wear them - god, I love her shoe collection!

Yikes.

    4. Marci, I see your point. I do think that Harry was trying to relate to the person, not out do him. He needs to polish his banter, but he comes by it honestly: he comes from a long line of foot- in- mouthers and blurter-outers. Ha! I do think it is easy to see where Harry's intentions are and I think the leopard jacket person saw that, too. I suspect Harry would bite his tongue rather than purposefully hurt someone's feelings or make him feel less important.

That's how I really relate to her style - fairly sleek and minimal without a ton of prints or bright colors, but I *always* like to have some kind of sneaky little detail (remember the tortoiseshell heels on a pair of black pumps she wore early on? that's what I mean) that peeks out or edgy accessory.

That said. I'm in the camp that this particular dress reads as way too informal for the event. The blazer worn normally could have gone a long way to save it although I think the self belt would not have worked all that well. Blazers popped on like that always strike me as trying too hard to look too effortless. And not that there's anything at all wrong with blogger fashion but the blazers over the shoulder look is a street style staple, not one I see for more business-leaning style looks. I do like the look - for the street or for that particular instance where a woman is in a formal look and her escort lends a blazer or jacket for a short chilly walk outside.

I echo all the thoughts on the handbag, how a cross-body bag just is not a formal look, and I also hate trying to keep especially smaller handbags on my shoulder regardless of strap length. What I've come to a compromise on in my own life is a small-to-medium clutch, large wallet or even small cross-body type bag with a wrist strap affixed. I can easily just drop the clutch the second I need an extra free hand and it dangles safely from my wrist. I love this system so much I even attached a wrist strap to my keys. It's nice in social settings to have a bag in hand to keep awkward hands occupied but yet not have to shove a clutch up my armpit should I need to use both hands. These types of bags are becoming more popular and I've seen them sold as "wristlets" some places.

There's a Chloe line called "Nile" bags that have become popular in recent years that I can totally see Meghan rocking. The "wristlet" part takes the form of a gold bangle. It looks fab. Most in the line also have a cross-body option. I haven't been too into handbags of late but the Nile line is making me do a double-take.

Anyway. Looking forward to the rest of this week's events :).

  64. I hope her style gets more polished. She has yet to dress like royalty. I also hope she can learn to control her need to fiddle with her hair. And while the shoes are beautiful they are more of a night out type of style versus a day of serious and meaningful engagements representing a country. Come on Meghan, you have all the resources in the world now and you could rock any style! Own your role girl and dress for the occasion with clothes that fit well and keep your hands off your beautiful hair.

  65. Yes, I noticed the "skin" and then told myself to get over it. :) Whatever she wears is by definition "royal," as is what Kate and Camilla and the Queen wear.

I feel like Spring has finally come! With two of the usual colors, she looks incredible!!! I love the dress more than I can write. Fabric and style---I wish I had it. And I finally found a pair of her high high heels that I can worship. Some of the women to whom she is chatting are wearing simple jeans and a shirt---I think she managed to make everyone feel comfortable with her yet still look stunning. She is very finished---earrings, good hair day, bracelets, purse that she doesn't have to worry about---I am going to give her an A+ today. :)

  66. She looks fabulous! Her shoe and accessory game is on point as always. I like her dress. It’s midi length so unless she’s constantly going up stairs I don’t see why anyone thinks it’s inappropriate but whatever.its a light color and it’s a nice change to her usual dark palette. The pinstripes give it a subtle dressy feel. Frankly it’s the type of dress I’d expect to see in many offices this spring/summer. Top it off with a cardigan or jacket and presto. Perfect office wear. Her hair is down and kinda wavy I saw. Lovely look.

I only read a handful of comments because quite honestly they’re depressing. Very glass half empty. Someone said on Twitter, the type of comments you’d see in the comment section of the DM. I don’t know if I’d go that far but then again I didn’t read them all. I found this blog and liked the nice positive feel of the community and there’s times when the tone goes negative and it’s a shame. Oh well.

    1. I've only read a handful of comments also Roxana. I've noticed that so many people here tend to confuse Meghan’s style with Kate’s style. It seems that they are waiting for Meghan to bring out the coat dresses, LK Bennett pumps and little clutch purses. While some of the comparisons aren’t super obvious, I can tell that Kate’s mode of dress is the mode they expect all royal women to adhere to. Sometimes while reading the comments there I find myself getting frustrated by the subtle and not so subtle comparisons and little digs about Meghan not dressing to “protocol”. Personally I love that Meghan and Kate have completely different tastes in clothes and accessories, something for everybody, but I don’t understand the desire to make Meghan into a Kate 2.0 (fashion wise).

Regarding the style I found it chic with his jacket and cute without, although I think the dress was more summery than spring

    4. I agree Faiza and Roxana, it's a shame, I feel like some people are waiting for an opportunity to criticize and whenever she wears something they don't like they go for it. I don't think Meghan will ever win with some people. So I hope she continues to keep carrying on. Meghan does not dress in coat dresses, I don't think she ever will, so if people are waiting for the "royal uniform" I think they will be disappointed.

    5. I can’t speak for anyone else on here, but I don’t want Meghan to dress like Kate or Kate dress like Meghan. Everyone has their own personal styles, and I don’t always like what either of the ladies wear. Personally, I will like certain items of an outfit, but rarely will I like a complete look, because my personal taste is different. Variety makes life interesting. If we were all the same, it would be rather dull. As long as Meghan and Harry make each other happy and do a good job representing the royal family, it’s all I could hope for.

      Delete
    6. Well said Lauri. Why people want Meghan to dress like Kate I do not know. Then the tabloids would be moaning about her copying Kate. She can't win. Carry on with your wonderful own style, please Meghan!

      Delete
    7. I agree with everyone. And I love the idea of this dress with a cardigan instead of the blazer. A shorter crew neck black cardigan would have looked great with this dress. Maybe even 3/4 sleeve. I would so wear that!

Meghan's shoe and bag game is amazing. Love them.

And I also do not want her to turn into a Kate clone. Kate has her style, and I hope Meghan is able to stay true to hers.

Charlotte, I can only repeat myself: WOW, her calendar is filling up as if she had absolutely NO wedding to plan, I know she has help, but we´ve seen many other royal brides all over Europe NOT having this many engagements before they were even married (or even after, for that matter..). IMPRESSIVE, to say the least!!!

  68. I love everything just not for this event. Cocktail shoes, a summer garden party dress and a blazer. I love the blazer, I just wish she'd put it on and kept it on. Everyone there has on suits, it would just be more in line. I do really love her style and hope that she slowly learns to adjust the level of professionalism per the engagement and vice versa, to the sporty events as well.

  69. Wonderful event, and it is always great to see Harry and Meghan. I must agree with the majority here, this outfit is a miss. I don't care for the dress at all. Perhaps the blazer would have given it a more professional look. The shoes are killing her back and feet. Meghan is a beautiful, lovely woman though no matter what she wears.

Ladies, I just LOVE how we can share views on this! Views - that´s all they are to me - so I read them, contemplate about them - and decide for myself how I´m going to deal with them. Oftentimes I take another look at an outfit - because some commenters had such a different view point. Sometimes I think: "For the love of God - I can´t see what they see"! - sometimes I think: "Yuk, they´re right! I can see their point! I´ve seen more photos/videos (videos: VERY "revealing" very often!!) - and yes, I can see the tailoring could be better, the outfit looked great-just not fully for this occcasion", etc!! This is why I love Charlotte´s blogs - and if people who don´t like the outfit are in the majority - maybe they have (the famous) "a point"? During my life I have often deliberately ignored so-called "musts" fashionwise (ok, sometimes in other fields, too, ahem!). I used to work in the financial industry and I regularly went without a blazer in the summer, just wearing a pair of nice trousers and a nice blouse - proper, yes, but NOT "appropriate" by the industry´s standards (uhh-ohh, and NO STOCKINGS!! SHOCKING!!)!!
I´ve said it before, either here or over at DKB, I just couldn´t bring myself to sit in a non-air-conditioned room and sweating my a** off, to put it bluntly. I´d much rather be able to concentrate on my client and his problems! I had so much positive feed-back - particularly from bankers!! - so many men were so happy to take their jackets off - and were so much more able to concentrate on what I had to say!
So let´s take a step back and not get upset if someone loves or doesn´t love Meghan´s outfit - we´re all human and all see things from different angles! Just an example: what someone from London might call "hot" - might be "not really hot at all" for someone else who lives, let´s say, in Phoenix, Arizona!

  71. If she had paired the blazer/shoes/bag with a simple sheath dress, this look would be a total win for me. Love the bag, and don’t mind the cross body strap at all. It’s very modern and trendy in my opinion. The dress is just all wrong. It’s a cute dress, but agree with previous commenters who have aaid it’s more of a summer/garden party dress.

It looks like these two are starting to have a full schedule leading up the wedding. I love how engaged she looks and I think it will be fun watching Meghan this year get used to everything. Now - the fashion. I think for me it was when she took off the jacket that I didn't love the outfit. I think if the dress had small shoulder sleeves instead of straps - it would have been a home run. I see others commenting on her wearing her jacket like a cape - remember she did that last year when she watched Harry play polo. It's a very in thing to try, and she must feel comfortable doing it and likes doing it. I for one have tried this once in my life - and it is hard to keep a jacket on as a cape!

  73. Hmm, I'm a little baffled by this look and torn over whether I like it in some way, or not. My first reaction to seeing the blazer slung over her shoulders was "ugh," but that's because I've never liked that look. It makes the shoulders look so awkward. The cross-body bag is too clunky and makes an already busy outfit even busier.

The strange thing is, this look *almost* works in a weird way, but then just falls flat the more I look at it. I 100% agree with the poster who said she's more trendy than stylish sometimes. The blazer is incredible and would have brought more polish to the dress, even though I think the buttons, stripes, and textures would still have clashed. I'm not against royals showing skin and don't think Meghan looks unprofessional, but I just think she could've looked much more polished and put together, even while still being true to her style. If nothing else, by wearing the dang blazer instead of hiking it up on her shoulders. The texture of the dress is so heavy. There's just too much going on. But, again, it *almost* works, somehow. I think that's the trendy vs. stylish component coming into play. The shoes, though, are gorgeous and very dressy.

Harry looks amazing -- I love him in the grey blazer. His speech was very nice, and they both seemed energetic and engaged.

Here's to hoping Meghan's sartorial choices for the rest of the week or more polished!

  76. Meghan continues to be herself and not conform to expectations, not that I know anything about how she thinks, I'm not a follower of TV and had never heard of her until she showed up with the Prince. I have read the comments and am amused by the number of people who think she doesn't understand the expectations of being a full-time royal and once she does she will change her style. Thinking back on all her choices since the engagement, Meghan has a very relaxed, casual, and even messy style and that's how she's going to continue. She's not coming into the family like Diana did as a teenager, she's in her mid 30's, her style and habits are set. Her very first appearance with Harry at the Invictus games was proof positive that she is completely unconcerned with how people view her, and Harry is fine with her as well. So, this dress reminds me of the 'pinafore' skirts my granny made me, with the overlong straps with multiple button holes in the back. It was one thing for Granny to make them that way for me, so they could be adjusted as I grew, on a woman, it's a silly look. But then, the goal of most designers does seem to be making women look silly.

Honestly, you had me laughing out loud with "..the goal of most designers does seem to be making women look silly" - you know, me and my mum used to talk about this more than 30 (!!) years ago!! Seems some "styles" never get "out of style", lol!!!
Personally, I´m just curious about how her style will evolve over the years - I remember raised eyebrows galore when Princess Diana "introduced" her "coat dresses", dear Catherine Walker (R.I.P.,dear Catherine...) tailored on her to such perfection!! Of course, you automatically compare to "other royal ladies" and of course, for a lot of us, Kate comes to mind. Her style certainly changed over the years. I do think that Meghan knows about her role, I just can´t imagine someone like her doesn´t - but maybe she´s "unimpressed" and decided her own style was just perfect? Why not? I am repeating myself, as long as she exudes such warmth and genuine interest,I don´t think of her outfits for more than two seconds - and then I move on to "the really important stuff" - where she is, whom she meets, the things she says, one day the speeches she makes, the causes she (and of course, Harry!) support!

  78. It appears as if it was a great youth forum. For Ms Markle, I don’t think it’s about the “fashion” at this point. Ms Markle went to a “youth” forum and she wanted to appear “youthful” and not overshadow anyone; she did just that, she was most relatable. For those reasons, I’m comfortable with her clothing selection. More importantly, I hope she was comfortable. Thanks again, Charlotte. I take pleasure in learning, and I’ve been learning a lot from “Mad About Meghan” and “Duchess Kate”.

  83. I feel like Meghan's outfit has so many lines on it. The dress has pin-stripes, the purse is striped, and also wearing it as a crossbody creates a line across her body AND across her belt (which is another line) and the shoes are so strappy.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I feel like this is a Drinking Cocktails Watching Polo dress, not an Inside Meeting Dress. It's a little sundress-y.

    ReplyDelete
  85. while I liked this dress, it DID seem more like a watching-polo-on-a-sunny-day dress than a business-y event. There’s a lot going on - the asymmetry makes the buttons look wonky rather than deliberate, the bag strap is fighting the stripes AND the buttons, plus you have the buttons on the jacket cuffs, the belt is too long and dangling down, and the jacket-over-the-shoulders looks silly. Her face and hair are amazing, as usual.

  86. I love how engaged Meghan is, how sparkling and warm she appears when greeting and listening to people. I'm sure she is proving a huge asset in these areas to the RF already, and having her involved in these highly-important meetings and events at this time makes total sense to me.

As for her look today, I like the pieces, but not for this event all together. I would have liked better to see the blazer worn properly the whole time and more business-like shoes for this particular event. But that's a minor thing compared to the evident impact she is making and the positive feelings she's generating among these youth leaders.

She is so pretty and her hair and face are all aces but she really is in need of a makeover for her role.

  89. I like the dress (though it needs better tailoring) but I just don't think it was appropriate for this event - which is, essentially, a business meeting. This was the time to look like a professional, not a fashion plate. She should have paired the blazer with a blouse and trousers, traded the crossbody for a clutch, and saved both the dress and bag for Royal Ascot. She can keep the shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Read all the comments -147 of them!!! Found them all to be polite and respectful, important not to interpret fashion critique with meanness. It appeared that most people tried to include some positive comments, even as they shared their feelings about the outfit. Meghan is a grown, confident woman who has navigated Hollywood and a lifetime of prejudice, thankfully with the support of loving parents. Hollywood is a “dog eat dog”world -she will be more than up to the task of navigating the intricacies of The Royal Family. She is no “shy Di”, and no conforming Kate (and I do NOT mean that unkindly. Enjoy her, ladies, what fun to have both her and Kate to follow.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Saying that I didn't like the dress is nastiness? Please don't forget we can tell our own opinion. I don't want Meghan to dress like Kate, I want Meghan to be herself. I don't think Kate dresses in a particular way because she has to, I think she just likes her conservative style. And that's ok.
Meghan likes to be more fashionable and that's ok too, but being fashionable and expressing yourself doesn't mean wearing a summery dress while attending such an important meeting representing HM The Queen. You don't have to wear tights, you just have to dress in a not too unformal way.
That's my opinion and I don't think anyone here is trying to spread hate towards Meghan, that's just pointing out that according to me that's just not an appropriate way of dressing for such an important event. Seems like people just want to read praises and not objective comments.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I'm not sure I'd ever like that dress - it's got too much going on with the big asymmetrical buttons and the exposed back straps, and the fabric looks sort of crumpled - but it would have looked a lot better if she had styled it differently. A softer jacket or a black cardigan tied around her shoulders might have worked.

Lines, stripes, buttons, asymmetry, belt, etc. - this is a chaotic look built around good separates that have been very very badly put together. I usually love anything by Alturazza, but with this blazer and these shoes...Maybe it was the surprisingly hot weather, and Meghan made last minute changes, but it was certainly a miss.
Charlotte, I hope you don't mind me saying this, but I'm personally getting quite tired of people moaning about 'nastiness' towards Meghan on this site. I've got to admit that this is the only place where I read about Meghan, but I certainly can't remember reading anything spiteful or viciously personal or abusive here. Surely saying that you don't like someone's clothes on a fashion blog, especially with reference to someone, like Meghan, who has aspired for years to know about fashion is not yet a crime against humanity, or a hate crime?

    ReplyDelete
  94. I absolutely love the dress. Although I am not really a fan of the current trend of putting a T-shirt or turtleneck under a dress, a thin high quality navy turtle neck under this dress might have looked fantastic and handled the bare shoulder, not professional issue. Just a thought.... Would love to see this dress at Wimbledon or at a polo match, as others have mused.... Absolutley stunning shoes and the straps, while fashionable, also seem to suit her very narrow feet. The purse is just ok to me - sad, because so far it’s the only one in my price range... Have a lovely evening, everyone.

  95. In theory, I applaud black pinstripes on cream, and a black blazer over them ought to work. A black and cream sheath dress, or a fit and flare dress would be really pretty. But this dress does not fit her at all. She needs a better bodice, a shorter length, and just to step it all up a notch for a professional look.

    ReplyDelete
  96. This is a miss again I think. I agree that dress would look very chic with sandals at a polo match. But wrong dress for such an important, political event. I don't think she should have worn bare shoulders. And I don't like a crossbody bag for a working (almost) royal. Bummer. I hope her recent outfits are not an indication of what we're going to see in terms of her wedding outfit!

    ReplyDelete
  97. This is a misstep. I love the blazer - not with the dress (and not on the shoulders EVER). The dress could be cute, but it clearly doesn’t fit correctly. The shoes are fine, but they definitely don’t work with the dress. And what is that bag doing here? She gets a pre-wedding stress pass.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I don't mind the look overall but it is so wrong for this setting! The jacket over the shoulder look looks great in pictures but I've seen people struggling with it in real life and it is not glamorous at all to watch someone struggle with their coat slipping off or flying away in the wind. I also think the bag would have worked better if she wore it over her shoulder instead of across her chest. It's all so cute but maybe not all together and definitely not for when she has to walk around and talk to people.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Wow I never thought anything could look “frumpy” on her but there you have it, this does. IMO a very unflattering fashion look for her incredible figure and the sleevelesss look a little inappropriate when she’s shaking hands with others in suits looking far more professional. If she’s trying to bring Australian designers into the mix she should have been made aware, or her stylist should have, that Oroton went into administration in November last year and certainly isn’t a local brand to highlight when they’re having huge stock sales and not fulfilling orders unlike many others she could have chosen.

On the upside, she wore a dress. She is great with people and the press does not distract her. She really listens to people. Those are her assets. I truly wish she would find a good tailor to fit her clothes to her body. She needs a better grasp of what tor wear for more for “ business casual” events. The term means different things in the US (more casual) than the UK and Europe ( polished office look)

  102. Not a fan of the dress but a HUGE fan of the person in that dress! She spices up the RF and seems to make Harry happy. She's smart, articulate, and passionate about causes that desperately need a "voice". She brings attention to people and causes that are marginalized. I, for one, cannot wait to see the impact she will have! Keep Calm and Carry On, Meghan!

  103. I saw all the comments so clicked here to read what all the chatter is about -- expecting most to be excited about Meghan joining Harry as he serves the Commonwealth. To my surprise, most people are getting all worked up about her OUTFIT. Really?? Glance through the comments & you'll see. It seems so shallow. Especially when there are such strong opinions disliking her style. It might be a good time to reset your expectations if you've been repeatedly disappointed-- this is her style. She hasn't worn anything veering from who she has been. Also, she has her style but that is not her main focus. If you listen to her interviews you will learn that she wants to make a difference in this world with the influence she has & now with her husband-to-be. I think it's time for all of us to take a step back and focus on what's really important and not feed the flame of criticism about clothes. She is a lovely woman doing her best to adjust to a new country, plan a wedding, and still finds time to serve & encourage people. Quite impressive!

    1. My thoughts exactly. Oh well, Meghan still will make a difference in the world regardless what people think about her wardrobe.

  104. Wow, can someone please find me a cheaper knock-off of those shoes? They're stunning. I would only wear them to work if they were paired with very tailored slacks and a button up because they're quite enough sex appeal by themselves, but I NEED THEM.

  105. Although her look scored a miss from me, the fact that we see some misses means that she isn't letting her advisors dress her up like a mindless doll in pre-approved, committee-selected outfits. That would be boring - for her and for us.

That said, I do hope that she and her advisors review her looks in order see where the course may need to be corrected in the future. You can have the best of intentions, money for bespoke clothing, and a team of talented, well-meaning advisors, but even then, course corrections may need to be made.

Also, criticism doesn't necessarily have the subtext of "Meghan needs to look like Kate". I can't speak for everyone, but I certainly don't want that. I hope that each maintain their own separate styles - it makes things far more interesting.

  106. Oh, she is lovely. Love seeing the love between her & her prince! Look how excited she is meeting folks. Spreading such good cheer! And what good posture she has- I need to copy that😁.

  107. Please people: Let Meghan BE Meghan. Don't try to make her over into the Queen or Kate or Sophie or anyone else. She is her own woman and we should respect that and her choices. Could any of us stand up under the barrage of nitpicking criticism she is subjected to every time she ventures out in public? And, I'm sorry but I believe much of the criticism is shallow. Yes, this blog discusses style but does that mean we get to nitpick every piece of every outfit? There is no objective standard for Meghan or Kate's clothing choices except that they be fairly modest. I suspect the royal family is much less critical than some of the readers of this blog who don't seem to understand that Meghan - or any royal woman - dresses to please herself and her family - not us.

While style is part of this blog, it shouldn't take over and it has. I admit I enjoy seeing what Meghan or Kate is wearing but that's only one reason I read these blogs. There are much more important things at work here and they often get shunted aside in favor of one more personal opinion about some aspect of Meghan's or Kate's wardrobes.

Please try to be less subjective and critical and focus on the work Meghan and Kate are trying to do. They are not Barbie dolls but women who bring attention and discussion to real life problems and the organizations and people who work on those problems. Don't turn the attention away from the important things they shine a light on and turn the focus just to clothes and shoes.

  108. Again, I love her outfit!! It would be great for other venues, I agree, but she looks incredible. Check out her profile; if the goal is to look polished and beautiful, I feel she has done it. It may help others to think of the fabric as business pinstripe rather than "apron." :) An the dress would look great by itself if it were black, too.

And it's interesting---it's not Erdem, either! So many blessings here.

    And the shoes are remarkable.

Oh there is always so many nasty comments about everyone! Whole stories about how MM broke up with the chef because she insisted on taking credit for a pasta dish he made. Then I read an interview with the chef's mother who said MM was just a wonderful down-to-earth person and the woman laughed and said she never heard the story about the pasta dish. And the chef has good things to say about her. (Better man than the ex-husband.)

  109. Saw how Kensington Palace posted some scandalous photos of Ms Markle showing her arms and shoulders. Her ankles were also on view---thank heavens her knees were covered. Are we more prudish than the palace? And it's just the usual skin---no side breasts or buttocks!!

I do not like this dress. I checked Siri for the temperature in London, and it was 77 degrees Fahrenheit. That is warm, but it is too early in the year to wear that type of dress. I would call it a sundress, more suited for the summer.

There is a difference in clothing styles in the U.S. and in England. For example, the winter coats that she has worn. Those coats are typical winter coats in the U.S. for cold weather. Kate's above-the-knee length coats would not be typical at all.

I do think she is still finding her style. There is so much criticism of her outfits, but no one mentions her stylist, Jessica Mulroney. If Meghan is making mistakes, why is she making them, since she has a stylist?
