Elegant Meghan in LBD for CHOGM Women's Empowerment Reception!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended a CHOGM Women's Empowerment reception at the Royal Aeronautical Society, London this evening.

The reception is Meghan's second Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting event. Yesterday she and Harry attended a reception with deletegates from the Youth Forum. I suspected it very likely we would see Meghan attend an engagement in support of women during this historic week. Women's issues have long been an area of interest for the future Duchess. I understand she has been privately visiting organisations around the UK focused on the area and supporting women will form an important part of her official work after the wedding.

The couple were greeted by host Boris Johnson and his wife Marina Wheeler.

It is exactly one month until the Royal Wedding :)

A video from Richard Palmer.

During the Royal Foundation Forum, Meghan said "I think what's really interesting when I hear people speak about girls empowerment is finding and knowing their worth. You'll often hear people say 'Well you're helping women find their voices' and I fundamentally disagree with that because women don't need to find a voice. They have a voice. They need to feel empowered to use it and people need to be encouraged to listen. I think right now in the climate we're seeing with so many campaigns; MeToo and Times Up, there is no better time than to really continue to shine a light on women feeling empowered and women really helping to support them in that. Men included. It makes such a tremendous difference."

The 2018 Women's Forum reflected on some of the global challenges still faced by women, as part of a wider commitment to "leave no one behind" in the Commonwealth journey to achieving gender equality by 2030. The Forum addressed the theme of "An empowered future for women and girls".

Throughout the week, sessions have focused on the following: Women in leadership, Women, peace and security, Women's economic empowerment, Gender parity in education, Ending violence against women and girls and Eliminating harmful practises.

Harry and Meghan were in terrific form as they chatted with guests.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, launched his Platform for Girls Education, a group of 12 influential figures from across the Commonwealth who will drive forward the political momentum on girls’ education.

Harry, Meghan and Boris with the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop.

A video from Kensington Palace.

Before the summit began, Mr Johnson said he would use CHOGM to push for all countries to ensure that girls received at least 12 years of good quality education. "Improving education for girls could be the single most effective intervention in some of the world's poorest and most troubled countries. The figures are unbelievable. In some parts of sub-Saharan Africa you've got 60%, 70%, 80% illiteracy among women,"

Charities at the reception included the Malala Fund, Plan International, the Varkey Foundation and Code Camp.

Yesterday the government confirmed plans to ensure one million girls across the Commonwealth get a quality education to play a transformational role in their communities and societies:

'Almost one million vulnerable and marginalised girls in developing countries across the Commonwealth will receive the life-changing education they need to become the thinkers and leaders of the future, the Prime Minister announced.
130 million girls around the world are missing out on school, and in Sub-Saharan Africa fewer than 1 in 20 poor, rural girls are on track to complete secondary school.
The Department for International Development (DFID) Girls Education Challenge will make sure 920,000 girls continue their education through primary, secondary school and training, so they can fulfil their potential to play a transformational role in their communities, economies and political institutions.
Today’s announcement will also give a further 53,000 adolescent girls in developing countries across the Commonwealth, who have never attended or dropped out of school due to poverty, motherhood, disability or conflict, a second chance to learn through catch-up classes and vital skills training.
DFID is also launching a new research partnership with the Malala Fund and the UN Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) to help governments better harness their own resources to break down barriers to education for the most marginalised girls.'

People reports:

'Speaking with a group of young women who are championing the rights of girls to free education, Harry said: “What you are doing is absolutely amazing. Kiki James, an activist from Nigeria who is a champion with the Malala Fund, told reporters, “He said we are moving with the tide, moving in the right direction.”
Peace, a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Nigeria who spoke at the summit earlier this week during the Educate to Empower session, added, “I told Meghan she was pretty, which she is. She said she watched me give my speech. She said she was really impressed, and that that is what she wants girls to do.”
Hope, an 18-year-old from Kenya who campaigns on equal education rights for girls, said she told Meghan and Harry “that if they empower girls we won’t let them down.” She added: “Meghan Markle was talking about how it has a rippling effect — how if you empower girls they empower the next generation in the community.”

Royal reporter Rebecca English wrote: "It is clear that both Harry and Miss Markle, who made clear her intention to 'hit the ground running' when it came to her official duties, plan to take a lead in Commonwealth matters." I saw several people on social media calling Meghan and Harry 'The Commonwealth Couple'. It has a very nice ring to it and seems entirely apt given their shared interest and plans for the future.

After the reception, Boris Johnson tweeted: "Girls’ education is the Swiss Army knife that solves a multitude of the world’s problems. Fantastic that HRH Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle joined me tonight to launch 12yrs of quality education for world's poorest girls in our Commonwealth."

This morning, William and Harry joined Prince Charles, the Queen and a number of other royals for the CHOGM official opening in the Buckingham Palace ballroom. During a significant speech, Her Majesty expressed her "sincere wish" that her son will succeed her as Head of the Commonwealth: “It remains a great pleasure and honour to serve you as Head of the Commonwealth and to observe, with pride and satisfaction, that this is a flourishing network. It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations, and will decide that one day The Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949.”

Meghan looked sensational in an elegant LBD tonight. This is one of her best looks since the engagement announcement for me; understated, chic and perfect for the occasion. Meghan's dress is the Black Halo Jackie O Belted Dress (with thanks to the amazing UFO No More team).

The $375 style is available at Black HaloSaks Fifth Avenue, ShopBop, Amazon and Spring. For those in the US, you can avail of a $75 discount at Bloomingdales with code SAVEMORE.

More from the product description:

'Finespun gabardine tailored with a beautifully draped neckline and accented with a slender contrast belt. Drape neckline, Modified cap sleeves and concealed back zip.'

The dress in red and blue.

The Jackie O is very much a staple at the Los Angeles based brand. The celebrity favourite has been worn by Blake Lively, Tyra Banks and Katherine Heigl. Founder and creative director Laurel Berman discussed its popularity:

'The Jackie O Dress made her debut in our Fall 2006 collection. The dress was an instant hit! “Jackie” could be worn to work, cocktails and dinner afterwards! From everyday working women to Hollywood celebrities, everyone loved the flattering fit. My design philosophy has always been to make women feel 2” taller and 5lbs thinner when slipping into a Black Halo dress.
Like the woman she was named after, the dress became a modern classic. As the Black Halo brand had become synonymous with style and fit, the Jackie O Dress is the embodiment of the brand.'

Below, the dress in Polka-Dot Print and a look at the 3/4 Sleeve version.

Meghan's gorgeous shoes are the Aquazzura Milano 105 Suede pumps (with thanks to Perth Fashion). They retail for $750 at My Theresa.

Also today, Harry and Meghan made the Time 100: Most Influential People of 2018 List. Reporter Simon Perry shared a peek inside.

'Somewhere among biryani, poutine and endless conversations, I realized just how deeply Meghan Markle cares for the world. With her, what you see is real, and what you get is a relatable young woman with her heart and mind in the right place. Her compassion, evident in the causes she supports, and her drive to break down stereotypes—obvious in her actions—will connect her to a generation in much need of kindness.
This ever-smiling, strong free spirit found her prince, fell in love and in turn made a cynical world believe in fairy tales again. But more than anything else, Meghan is an important influencer in a world that needs strong public figures to respect and look up to. People the world can be inspired by. Meghan, standing shoulder to shoulder with Harry, will be a princess for the people.
Love always, my friend. Live happily ever after.'

'I first met an extremely shy and sweet Prince Harry at a private lunch at Kensington Palace, given by his mother Princess Diana for Gianni Versace and me many years ago. What a joy it has been to see that young boy grow to inherit his mother’s warmth, sense of humor and courage to stand up and champion the causes he truly believes in.
Harry and I have bonded over a passionate desire to end the global AIDS epidemic, a disease for which his mother did so much important early work to fight stigma and build awareness.
He is equally passionate when it comes to reducing the stigma surrounding mental-health issues—blowing a much-needed breath of fresh air into the British stuffiness that has kept vital conversations lurking in the shadows.
The Invictus Games are his creation, and they give dignity and hope to injured armed services personnel and veterans by offering a spectacular and inspirational global competition in sport.
Prince Harry has that rare ability to walk into a room full of strangers and make everyone feel comfortable and at ease. As he has grown in maturity, I have watched him take on these causes with the remarkable skill to see and communicate how it truly feels for the people he is trying to help.'

On Saturday, Harry and Meghan will attend a reception hosted by The Hon Malcolm Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia, and Ms. Lucy Turnbull, celebrating the forthcoming Invictus Games Sydney 2018. It is also very likely Meghan will join Harry for the Queen's Birthday Party concert at the Royal Albert Hall. The event will include a special speech from Prince Harry. The concert begins at 8 pm and will be televised on BBC1.

    1. Such a worthy initiative and I’m so glad they are involved in supporting women’s rights and equality. Because she is dressed perfectly for the occasion, it’s easier for me to focus on why they are there instead of what she is wearing. Love everything about this appearance!

  3. Nailed it! Meghan looks fantastic!! That dress is totally Meghan but also perfect for a cocktail reception! This is also how you slay a messy bun/updo! Makeup and accessories, dead on.

I would love to comment on the 'event' but it's a cocktail reception. I love that they are supporting and empowering women but that's about all there is to say about it at this point. Maybe after speeches there will be more to say.

  6. Beautiful look! Just read that London had their hottest April day on record. She looks cool and elegant. Noticed first woman in line curtsied, a bit ahead of protocol since she’s not yet married, but fine.
I think the narrow black belt would have looked great with yesterday’s dress, along with a black shrug instead of blazer.

After listening to the "Pod save the Queen"-podcast, I´m much more "sympathetic" to Meghan´s choice yesterday. If what they say on the podcast is true, London heat caught everybody by surprise - they think it was more like a last-minute choice of "Oh dear, it´s suddenly SO hot - all plans be changed, please!!".
I can´t say too much about today´s dress, yet, but the dress seems to be understated with a twist (or two ;-))) ).
    Can´t wait for more!

This is a fabulous outfit that flatters her beautifully. The dress is somewhat sculptural with the neckline and shoulders, and the artfully messy hair compliments it well. I love the shoes, and I adore that bag. Beautifully put together.

      Gorgeous.

    3. I saw that! I was glad Meghan let him go first this time, since the comments I'd read absolutely tore her apart for stepping in front of Harry to shake hands with a teenager at the Youth Forum. I wonder if one of the PR team said something to her?

      Delete
    4. 🌸 Yep. Apparently they did, Becca H,
as she was very adamant not to do that again because the man leading her into the room was very clearly prodding her to proceed and she backed off to acknowledge and follow protocol this time.
I did notice that the first lady in line did curtsy to
Meghan. That must be such a strange feeling to have someone curtsy to you. My family just will not do it, lol. I do not know why. 🤔

    5. Maybe they said something to Harry too, why should this fall on Meghan, many times he does the ladies first when greeting delegates.

Yes Isabella and Becca, she had a lovely gesture to make Harry pass first, but he did’ return the gesture as we can see him introducing Meghan to the person he is talking with ! She definitely is at ease with people , and I think’it Is one of the reasons she already is’ includedd in official celebrations . She and Harry have definitely a rare way of beeing driven to people and sincerely show interest , not that William and Katherine do not, but it is quite different , they express more down to earth feelings , like the northern countries royal do . They might be the persons who could make the protocole evolve and become simpler .....

  21. YAAASSSS. This is what I think a lot of us have been waiting for. Meghan is gorgeous no matter what she wears, but each look prior to this seemed just slightly *off* in some way, almost like she hadn’t quite made the distinction about what look she was going for (understandable given this is a brand new role), but I’ve never questioned her sense of fashion, was just waiting for it all to come together in one phenomenal outfit. THIS IS THAT OUTFIT.

  22. When I saw the early post, I thought, "is that the ever popular Jackie O Black Halo dress?" That is a very popular dress and been around a long time. Delete
  29. She looks gorgeous. Does anyone think she may have altered the sleeves on the dress a bit. Looks like they were made a bit narrower so just a bit more shoulder showed and they looked a bit less boxy. Maybe just how the dress fit the model as compared to Meghan. Someone mentioned the Royal Jewelry. She wears such delicate pieces I think she will be very selective in what she wears. No idea how many delicate pieces are in the vault, so many of the pieces are big and heavy looking.

    1. Will be interesting to see what she borrows considering the tax implications as a US citizen. The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article speaking to the problems of US citizens who marry foreigners. A total nightmare when Uncle Sam is watching. I am sure H&M advisors are on top of it.

I hope she sticks to the motto "less is more". A few carefully selected pieces are much more tasteful than tons of bling which is so old fashioned. She doesn't need the Saudi gifted million dollar necklaces. An occasional tasteful tiara on the appropriate occasion is fine, otherwise two or three items look much better.

      Delete
    3. 🌸 hhhmm. “Less is more” and The Royal Jewelry Box. “The Royal Bling Dilemma”, lol.
      That’s got to be a first. 😳
I agree though, Annette. For Meghan “less is more” pertaining to small jewelry pieces. That seems to fit her aesthetic better. Although “less is more” probably doesn’t apply as to the quantity of smaller pieces she’ll have. Me thinketh she is and will accumulate quite a wide selection.
(Sigh) All that historical, sparkly Royal bling to no avail. Queen Mary would faint. :)

  30. 🌸 LOVE, LOVE the entire outfit, dress, hair, shoes (wow), earrings. I would wear that outfit for sure. This is one of her best outfits so far. It fits her body type, frame and event.

(The purse? I like the style and that it is velvet but don’t like the snaky ornamentIon.)

Love the wisps of hair on the side since she’s not doing a walk-about greeting people in windy weather.
I like the side wisps and the way they look just not on those walkabouts. Very casual/elegant hairstyle. I love it.

More new jewelry, shoes, purse and dress. About $4,000+ for this outfit. :) (where will she store these additions?) :)

I read that Camilla has had to store her clothes on racks in the upstairs hallways at Clarence House. Diana used to auction off clothing for charity - that is a good idea. Otherwise wear outfits more often and make it obvious that you are doing it because you want to be a good example.

I wouldn't be shocked if some of their office space is being used for her stuff right now since presumably after the wedding they'll get going on finding/transitioning to a more permanent home asap. They also have diana's old apartment for use and it's not like any of the trio has done a lot lately with hosting stuff in KP anyways so there's probably room in that renovated former diana apartment space for her things as well. Or wherever kate put her things before when still living in Nottingham.

That's not even taking into consideration the amazing work that her grandchildren will be free to do! When my sister and I were growing up, if we were going out to a gathering with my parents, we were taught that handling our hair while we were around other people was a “no-no.” (Admittedly, that was 60-some-odd years ago, and I think some of those rules have been relaxed over the years!) I love everything else about Meghan’s look today, and she has such a beautiful face and smile - that’s always what I see first!

I know it's certainly inspiring me.

These pictures are fantastic! Ahhhh.....redemption! She hit it out of the park today in every way. I may have preferred a "non-black" clutch for a pop of color -- maybe cream or yellow or zebra even -- but all around they both look incredible. And a terrific event!!

  54. Omg I am in love with this look. Elegant, stylish, would totally wear this outfit myself, messy bun and all. (I like Meghan have thick black hair that tends to go "messy" no matter how much hairspray or gel I wear so I've just embraced the messy bun look.)
ONLY thing I would change: the double straps on the shoes look slightly fussy. But considering how tiny Meghan's ankles are I can totally understand her favoring this type of shoe over the traditional pumps.

They so gave us exactly what is true about Harry and Meghan. We pretty much know that about Harry. Priyanka gave us such a beautiful glimpse of Meghan from her perspective as a good friend. It was very well written. Thank you Charlotte for sharing on your forever in one place blog.

    1. Katharine, wasn't it just so lovely to read what Priyanka said about her dear friend Meghan? Especially after all the garbage that's been printed by Meghan's "so called" "past friends". The continued line about how Meghan has a pattern of ditching friends & moving on..... I always want to scream.... "Maybe there's a reason she moved on from this person??" To me the fact that a person talks & tells details of a friendship to the press..... that's a pretty universal clue that this is not a friend that Anyone wouldn't move on from! Right?? So to hear from her dear & well respected girlfriend was Wonderful! I think it will also be so nice to see her amazing group of friends, some going back to College & before, in the Chapel to be there for Meghan & of course Harry, on their Big Day!!! You can't be someone who "has a patterned of relentlessly cutting people out of your life & then still have a huge long list of friends going back many years!! That says it all to me! So yes, I loved seeing both the pieces in the magazine about both Meghan & Harry! :) xo

  59. YAS queen! This look is so on point! Polished, chic, event-appropriate — and her bun is elegant, too. Meghan really shines, not least of all at this event. This is probably my favorite look of hers, also.

Will we get a gown at the Saturday event? I don’t remember seeing if it was a formal occasion or not. I really want to see Meghan in a full-on gown, now!

  60. Fantastic look! I agree, her best ever.

  61. Just echoing everyone here to say how beautiful Meghan looks. Chic, modern, simple, with such beautiful shoes and that pink lip! And those squiggly earrings! Her style is pretty minimalist - not for me personally - but this shows how it really works for her. Though I continue to hope she plays more as her role evolves and she becomes a full fledged royal - but that’s a selfish desire to see more elaborate clothes!

I think we’ll see something similar for her wedding day - simple and clean with an interesting neck line or texture. Although the dress in the engagement photos was pretty frilly, so maybe she’ll surprise us! I hope she does wear a tiara though, both because I wanna see it and because I think it will mean a lot to all the girls who identify with Meghan to see her as a true princess.

Love, love, love that she is focusing on women’s empowerment. I think she’ll be a huge voice here when the time is right for her. And love her and Harry as The Commonwealth Couple. A great way to carve out their own niche that also supports W&K.

    4. Making demands for tiaras?!? Haha. I want her to wear one too but I won’t demad it. Lol. Or, I would love also one of those elaborate almost-hat-looking veils. Or is it a veil attached to those lace, whole head hats? You know the ones I mean? They’re very dramatic and might not be popular on here. Now that I’ve written all this I don’t know if it’s too over the top for her style. It is classic though. I can’t wait to see what she chooses!

      Delete
    5. 🌸 No Tiara? 😳 That’s unthinkable.
Windsor Castle, marrying a British Monarchy Prince/Senior Royal, a Royal carriage ride around the town and up The Long Walk, the world watching a future Duchess?
ALL THAT demands a tiara, yeh?
Surely she’ll get it right. Surely. 👸🏻

      Delete
    6. I’d love a tiara too! But there is no “right” except inappropriate. If she is not flashing anybody and abiding by the church rules of dress (no idea what they are) then she has done it right. Then we can hash out our style preferences if we like. I really wonder how her clean style preferences will work with the pageantry if a royal wedding! Fantastic look and as usual, her shoes are giving my ankles sympathy pains, tho prolly not quite sympathy since she doesn't turn her ankles every ten seconds like I do esp it I ever wore shoes like hers lol!
But most importantly, this is soo so so very important as a cause that needs even more work and attention. Boris Johnsons tweet is on the money - the inclusion of women into all arenas of life will help address all major problems that exist and need to be solved. Whether it is policymaking in an established government or peacekeeping in a transitioning, nascent democracy - women have vital input that needs to be heard and when ignored is a huge loss for us all. Aside from the obvious issues with stereotypes, the traditional view of women as too emotional & soft to be playing major roles in the "public sphere" is also silly bc we'd all be better off if toxic masculinity didn't drive everything from foreign policy to economic issues in this world, and the public/private divide is an arbitrarily constructed division that exists for the purpose of justifying exclusion of women and has no legitimate basis otherwise. There's also nothing wrong with things like emotion, or anything else typically associated with 'femininity'. Statistics are hugely on the side of inclusion of women being an immense net positive for the world.
Plus it's the right thing to do, regardless.

I will say, it always makes me nervous when western women (esp white women tho ofc Meghan is not white) interfere in regards to women's issues in other countries, esp when countries their own nation has colonized for centuries. White women are terrible for women of color in their own nations already, forget other countries. White liberal feminism in the US ended up becoming huge successful tool for Bush administration to justify war in Iraq. The problem is western women don't know/understand cultural norms of other countries and crucially, how that culture affects whether or not something is indeed the subjugation of women. For example, the west very broadly and without nuance tends to characterize the wearing of hijabs and other particular items of clothing by Muslim women to be a sign of oppression, ignoring that it is also about culture and that many Muslim women do have a choice and choose to embrace that culture and religion without being forced to.
Focusing on women's issues elsewhere also ends up often becoming a rallying cry for why western nations are better/the best, whether it's intentional or not on the part of those focusing on women's issues abroad. But it's why I'm not a huge fan of western women who will talk about women's issues abroad but not in their own country much or at all. Fix your own house before you preach to other countries is all I'm saying. Esp bc often focusing on the problems abroad is an easy way to look very charitable while avoiding controversy bc ppl around you will be much more offended if you point out problems in yalls own country instead of another.
So I hope Meghan shifts from doing something similar in past, for whatever reasons and towards domestic women's issues focus.

    3. I appreciate learning about the general work that Harry and Meghan are involved in, but the Royal family have traditionally not engaged in politics. I know it can be a fine line to balance royal causes/charities with political leanings; but with all due respect, I believe according to Charlotte's guidelines, this site should not be used as a forum for political or propaganda based opinions. Thank you kindly Charlotte for letting me express my humble opinion.

      Delete
    4. I think that's an interesting opinion, English Rose. Maggie's comments about Bush/Iraq and western women fixing their own house before fixing someone else's could be taken as political statements. I can understand that; I guess I didn't because I tend to agree with her on them, but I can definitely see why some would not.

But I do think there's a good point in there about people in the west not recognizing other countries' cultural norms. Hopefully, that will be taken into account in whatever they set out to do.

I will not post any other comments as I am disappointed as to the political and agenda based wrangling that commentators appear to believe fall within the purview of this site.
I will continue to read your posts but not commentary. There are many, many other formats for people to voice their political concerns. The brother says to not invite his sons, who took their mother's last name. The sister says to man up and invite everyone but she leaves out her daughters. The brother says he hasn't heard from MM since 2011, when they supposedly spent weekends together taking care of their grandmother and were close. Think he just answered the question of why no more contact. That closeness must have been something MM never wanted to revisit! MM has had a plan and a vision of something greater than family cookouts with the Markles since she was young, and I give her mom a lot of credit. I am so glad that the wedding guests will be only positive good people! (Hoping for the nieces and some of Doria's family, though.)

There is a strong streak in me that wishes not to exist and really does not believe that I do, so that I tend to become unnerved when these curious ideas are proved to be not really true because someone (in this case you) has responded to something I have said or done just as if I were an actual person the same as you (especially) or anyone else. Some of it is, I guess, just the worst sorts of arrogance and irresponsibility , but not all of it, as I really don't think I exist a lot of the time, so I'm asking you to bear with it, me, whatever, for the sake of what?—friendship I suppose, which I want to be capable of, which is obviously not enough. More brains might help, but enough unseemly remarks for eight o'clock in the morning and the shivering in pyjama bottoms syndrome.”

There you go - so much positive feedback for what Meghan wore here - and that´s what I thought about the last post: people are not here to "bash Meghan no matter what, find bad in everything" - no, they give credit where credit is due!!
This dress was fantastic, and looked simply spot on. The day before - well the overwhelming majority thought it was a miss. And why not? That doesn´t mean most of us thought it was a miss BECAUSE "she is....." (insert bi-racial, an ex-actress, etc etc) at all!! It was simply because of that dress, and that was it...
And I´m very glad that´s all it was! ;-)))

What Elton John said about Harry: "Prince Harry has that rare ability to walk into a room full of strangers and make everyone feel comfortable and at ease" IS EXACTLY what people said about his mother....I had that feeling from the beginning: Harry and Meghan have the potential to make a real difference. Our planet needs this kind of people so badly.... Go, Meghan and Harry, GO FOR IT!!

Meghan looked lovely, and she kept her outfit largely uncluttered. I would pin the stray locks back and worry a bit about the possibility of tripping over the ties on the shoes. But those are quibbles. I wish Meghan had been at the Queen’s dinner, but her participation in the CHOGM events has been carefully thought out, and this one was terribly important. Good for Boris Johnson. I can’t comb his hair, but I can be glad he supports such a drastically needed effort. We know that society flourishes when women are full participants, and education is the key to success for a people as well as for individual people. But it's my opinion that in these new circumstances, when she is representing The Queen, she needs to have a polished updo if she chooses to wear one. Some have said that she can't due that with her hair, etc. I would guide anyone who thinks that, to go look at pics of her wearing her hair very sleekly put into gorgeous updos at Hollywood & Promotion Events for suits! I know this is "an on trend style". I know this is "Meghan's Style". But since she was able to sport a sleek, polished updo for her previous job?...... I think it's only right that she put this same effort into her "New Royal Job". This double standard of it being ok to expect she be polished with her updos for her old job, but not her new?? Just is really getting under my skin. My skin, my problem, but I just really wanted to share & explain my opinion! Thanks for reading :)

    2. I think the hair issue whether sleek, messy bun, updo or any other style will always be an issue. My opinion is for the evening affair she was presentable, maybe in the future she will do a sleek look as she evolves in the role but it seems for now this is how she prefers to look. Maybe if she gets an order from Her Majesty herself to go sleek, and I think so far Her Maj is liking her look otherwise they would not be giving her so many engagements and "showing" her off which I think they are- and I mean this in a positive manner. I think right now we should wait and see about her fashion style and hair, it's only 4 months and she is not even married yet.

    3. Meghan looked gorgeous. Love the classic silhouette of the dress with a modern twist. Love the clutch and shoes (although there’s no way I can wear those high heels). She’s really sticking to her minamalist style. Makes me wonder more what she’s going look like on May 19th. So excited and cannot wait!
Hair and make-up are just perfect as well. I understand how you feel about the hair. Maybe she does her own hair and make-up now and a bun is the only style she can do herself? Maybe during her acting years, red carpet event, she had them done by a professional?

    4. Yes Anon 20:47, I too loved everything to bits! Loved the way her hair framed her face & it's just a personal preference about the bun being more tidy at these types of events. No biggie, just my little 'ol pref! lol :) So now that I've shared my personal pref, I won't be saying another bit about it! lol :)

  81. I was wondering why MM was not at the banquet. Might it be because Kate couldn't go? I assume that she can go next year.

    1. I do not think it was anything to do with Kate, maybe they just strategically placed her in events considering she is not yet a royal. Kate would have gone if not on leave and Meghan would not have gone if that was the plan.

  82. I am not a fan of polished hair, probably because my hair was my favorite feature and it was really thick and had a natural curl. I can see that MM may have felt she had to style her hair a certain way for her career but now she can look he way she wants to look and not get fired. You're right that she can do something to be less wispy, so we have to assume that she doesn't want to, that she really doesn't want to. Have to also assume that no one in the RF cares or cares enough to make it an issue. If Charles doesn't care, then she has clear sailing.

Becca---I am so used to her hair now that I would be a little disappointed in anything else. :) And there was a funny "article" that discussed what MM and Kate would look like if they exchange clothes. They photoshopped the ladies' heads onto the others' bodies and it was striking how out of place each looked.

    1. Oh Allison, I bet that was so funny to see! :) I too have always had a thick head of naturally curly hair that has been the bane of my existence to care for & prep! My hubby has always loved it natural, but it has always driven me bats. It takes so long to style, but I must say, once styled, it holds like iron! lol :) I'm sure that lends itself to my preference for a less messy updo. But all the different preferences are what makes the world go round! :)

  83. Finally a look that I like. Unfortunately I am much more drawn to her Suits character wardrobe and am always not so fond of her own style. But this dress is gorgeous and she looks beautiful in it. I like hair, it is up but just messy enough to look youthful but not wild. Don’t like the shoes but I can overlook that. Big win in the fashion department for me!!!

  84. I just read a poll where there was a large percentage of people who disliked Ms Markle. More than a majority of them, I know, without a doubt, have never met her. So I sit perplexed, asking myself, ‘what has she done to them?’

  85. The black dress looks a lot better than many of the other outfits Meghan has worn that cost thousands of dollars. I think she overspends on her outfits in general.
