Harry and Meghan Mark Stephen Lawrence's 25th Anniversary at London Memorial

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended a memorial service to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the murder of Stephen Lawrence and to celebrate his life and legacy.

It's a very special day for the Royal family. This morning, the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a baby boy at St Mary's Hospital. No doubt Harry and Meghan are hugely excited to meet the latest addition to the family. We're covering the arrival over at Duchess Kate.

The couple arriving.

The service was held at St Martin-in-the-Fields church in London.

An arrival video.

St Martin-in-the-Fields is a unique configuration of cultural, charitable and commercial initiatives rooted in the life of a vibrant Church of England congregation. On the Church's website its vision and history is discussed: "We see ourselves at the heart of London, through our location on Trafalgar Square, and of the nation, through our 500-year links with the royal family, and also of the church, through our national profile gained through nearly a century of broadcasting and our flagship role in social issues – but also appealing to the heart through our long tradition of choral and classical music and our reputation for compassion gained through a century of engagement with poverty and destitution. It also names our calling to be on the edge, not just of Trafalgar Square but alongside those on the edge through being excluded, ignored or oppressed by society or church, and on the cutting edge of innovation in culture, commerce, charity and congregational life." It is in fact the official parish church of the Royal family in London.

Harry and Meghan met Stephen's mother, Baroness Lawrence and his brother Stuart at the entrance of the church before taking their seat.

The murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 shook Britain to its core. Born in 1974 to parents Neville, a carpenter, and Doreen, a special needs teacher, Stephen was the eldest of three and grew up in the south-east London suburb of Plumstead. During his teenage years, he excelled in running - competing for the local Cambridge Harriers athletics club - and appeared as an extra in Denzel Washington's film For Queen and Country. At 16, already an aspiring entrepreneur, Stephen set up his own business selling clothes and book covers. His ultimate dream was to become an architect and at the times of his death the "kind", "ambitious" and "fun-loving" teenager was studying hard to achieve his goal.

Following a day of study, 18 year old Stephen spent the evening of Thursday, 22 April 1993 with a friend. As he waited at a bus stop to return home a gang of youths attacked him in a brutal, racially-motivated murder. Stephen didn't know his attackers and they didn't know him. The case became one of the most high-profile killings in UK history; its fallout included profound cultural changes to attitudes on racism and the police, and to the law and police practice, and the partial revocation of double jeopardy laws, before two of the perpetrators were convicted in 2012.

The Telegraph writes 'Stephen Lawrence: How the racist murder changed Britain':

'At the centre of the Stephen Lawrence saga is his parents, Doreen and Neville, whose poise, persistence and eloquence, helped propel the tragedy to the forefront of the nation’s consciousness.
Two weeks after the attack Nelson Mandela was on a visit to the UK and took time to meet with the Lawrences and lend them his support.
At the time Mr Mandela, who was to be elected as South Africa’s first black president the next year, said: “We are very used to this type of thing were life is regarded as very cheap in South Africa. But nevertheless, it is a sense of deep concern that this should happen in a country like Britain”. The comments were a jolt to the nation and prompted the Met Police to go on the defensive about the investigation.
Despite the convictions of Norris and Dobson, The Met Police is still investigating the murder of Stephen Lawrence, although it recently admitted it had no new lines of inquiry.'

In the face of the most unimaginable pain any family can endure, the Lawrence family were determined Stephen would not be forgotten and demonstrated incredible courage and strength. In 1998, Doreen Lawrence established a charity in memory of her son. For the past 20 years the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust has campaigned for fairness, justice and equality for all. The trust has a continuing commitment to supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to create a fairer society in which everyone, regardless of their background, can flourish. Stephen's mother Doreen was appointed OBE for "services to community relations" in 2013 and was created a life peer. Last year they supported over 2,000 young people through training, mentoring, bursaries and other activities.

Prime Minister Theresa May was in attendance and announced plans for the government to work with the trust to establish a national annual commemoration of Stephen's life and legacy every year. The 22nd April will be Stephen Lawrence Day.

More from The Telegraph:

'Stephen's mother Doreen, now a peer sitting in the Lords, said: "I feel honoured she has recognised the changes that have been made in Stephen's name and the changes that are still needed.
"Stephen was denied his voice but the Stephen Lawrence Day will be an opportunity for young people to use their voices and should be embedded in our education and wider system regardless of the government of the day.”
Baroness Lawrence thanked those who had helped her achieve all she has and said that after 25 years "it is time to draw a line". Stephen’s father, Neville, said: "We have got some justice and now this is like a mark of what we have been trying to do for years - our son's memory is going to be enshrined in history."

Prince Harry read a message of support on behalf of Prince Charles.

Back to The Telegraph story:

'The Prince, who met Stephen's mother and brother Stuart before the service, delivered a personal message of support to the family from his father, the Prince of Wales, who in 2000 gave the annual Stephen Lawrence Memorial Lecture
He told the congregation: "'I remember vividly the profound shock that I felt at his senseless murder, a feeling shared by so many people across this country and beyond.
I remember, too, just how deeply moved I was by the determination of Stephen's family to build something positive from the tragedy they endured and to ensure that Stephen's story did not end with despair, but continued with hope.
A quarter of a century later, we can only imagine the man who Stephen would have become, and just how his extraordinary potential might have been fulfilled."'
The Prince said that the Lawrence family had honoured him with everything they had done in his name and the changes they had instigated.'

A video from the service.

Baroness Lawrence is a truly inspirational woman. Some time ago I watched an incredibly insightful interview with her where she candidly discusses her family's story and lessons the media and police should learn from the case.

If you would like to donate to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust please click here. Just £5 pays the travel costs for a young person to attend employability training, and £50 pays for a young person to undertake qualifications in starting their own business, which entitles them to financial support and mentoring for a year.

Meghan wore a black patterned sleeveless, belted, Hugo Boss dress from the Spring 2018 Collection (with thanks to Caroline).

Meghan's dress is unavailable online, however the similar Printed Belted Dress retails for $595.

Perth Fashion identified Meghan's clutch as the Wilbur & Gussie Bespoke Charlie Oyster Style.

A closer look at Meghan's pumps. It is thought they are a Manolo Blahnik or Jimmy Choo style.

Meghan wore her hair up for the service and accessorised with diamond and white gold earrings.

On Wednesday, Prince Harry and Meghan will attend services commemorating Anzac Day in London. Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will attend the Dawn Service at Wellington Arch, and the Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey. The Dawn service begins at 5 a.m. and the Service of Commemoration at Westminster Abbey commences at noon.

    2. I agree Ritu. I like it very much but I think it's way too casual for such a formal occasion. It's just a personal opinion, but I think sleeveless daytime dresses should go the same way as black outfits for a member of the royal family. I'm sure she'll nail it given a little more time though - fingers crossed.

    3. Princess Diana wore a sleeveless dress to Gianni Versace's funeral. What's the difference?

    4. She did. And she looked stunning. Although I’m sure people will remind you that I believe that was after her divorce was finalized. So not technically “Royal” anymore. I think Meghan looks fine. There’s been sort of a strange prudishness over her last few outfits. She’s not wearing anything risqué. I don’t really get it.

    5. Exactly Grenada, what's the difference? There's nothing to nail in time, she's already nailing it!

Grenada, she wore a black jacket inside the church (many pictures on the internet of her consoling Elton John).

Certainly a great difference, Diana was not representing the Queen , and mr Versace was a friend of hers making the service a private matter . Not beeing a religious person, I do not really care about the pretty sleeveless dress for a service, but given the very special celebration and the fact that she was in attendance because she is nearly part of the BRF , a jacket would have been good, to my feelings .... I am sure Meghan will manage these details quite well’ in a few months, while sticking to her own style !

    9. Some of women at the choir of this same memorial wore sleeveless dresses too.

    10. I agree, lovely dress, but not for this occasion. I actually think the other dress shown here, with short sleeves would have been ideal.

      Delete
    11. I agree. There are many churches in the world where you are not allowed in with shoulders showing.

      Delete
    12. No sleeves is just fine, this us something posters will need to get used to, Meghan will be wearing sleeveless dresses, just like Michelle Obama many said it was not appropriate but with time they realised it was new era. So get ready ladies there is a new royal!

    13. I’m looking at pictures of Diana at that funeral now and she did have a jacket over her shoulders at one point apparently, but plenty of her sitting next to Elton sleeveless. I find this all kind of excessively conservative. She’s not wearing anything risqué. This is quite normal for well dressed women nowadays. Yes she’s representing the queen but she’s not the queen. And I think you’d be hard pressed to seriously suggested anything about how she appears today is disrespectful of the queen or her role.

    14. The cut and sleevelessness of this dress make it far too casual for this church service in memory of a slain boy. Further, because it is a different and beautiful dress, it pulls focus from the purpose of the event. The other style of dress with the sleeves and simple silhouette, a repeat of her black suit or black dress with suit jacket, or something else would have been far better. She looks beautiful but inappropriate. It’s too bad because her being there, a biracial future-royal, is hugely significant and it looks like she’s going to tea or somewhere breezy, not this important service in a church.

    15. Diana has worn a jacket with her sleevless during the funeral. Still I like Meghan's choice today.

      Delete
    16. Diana did not attend the funeral as a member of the RF. She wore a black sheath dress with pearls, no v-neck, and no messy bun. Details perhaps but they add up. .

    18. I do agree with Anonymous23 April 2018 at 19:04. My thought was that the look is too casual. Just a jacket/coat/shawl over it, and it would have been perfect. She looks beautiful anyway :)

    19. She needs sleeves, I agree.
and sorry but Michelle Obama can certainly wear sleeveless dresses if she likes, as Megan will do but neither of them are classy in doing so. Just my two cent.

    20. Meghan is beautiful and always looks nice. I guess it is just person opinion, but I do find the sleeveless options and messy buns a bit off-putting. Many of us have to adhere to dress codes, written or unwritten, in our places of work. Like it or not, being part of the royal family and attending various functions is a bit of a job and with it comes certain responsibilities (like how you dress). I don't think adhering to some of the unwritten dressing rules necessarily stifles style, rather by adhering to these rules, the focus is less on what she is wearing and more on the event. In a full church she appeared to be one of a handful, or less, people wearing a sleeveless ensemble. To me, that is an indication you are a little out of step and her stylist should be paying better attention. Just my two cents.

      Delete
    21. Silvia let's agree to disagree sleeves are not the definition of class, Meghan and Michelle dress in a beautiful and modest way, my opinion.

Lovely dress for a service in warm weather. Sleeveless styles are acceptable in southern states in the USA , and in other warm places. Some churches will require you to cover your shoulders with a shrug or pashmina. I’m not a fan of this day’s messy bun, or the tendrils.

    1. SHe has upped her wardrobe, and now looks more royal in attire. But the messy hair has to go! I agree a jacket would be appropriate, given nearly all royal women wear sleeves of some sort. Bare arms are OK, but do not project professional appearance as much as sleeves or light jacket (not that blazer, tho!)

      Delete
    2. Agreed. No sleeves and messy bun are far too casual here.

    3. Think of the purpose of the event too. She look nicely dressed but doesn’t look professional.

    1. Meghan is like me -- thick black hair that doesn't stay in place. So over time I've just accepted the "sloppy bun" or "sloppy pony tail" with wisps of hair around my face. I think this outfit is stunning. Love how well she can pull off the midi-length.

But most of all, I love that Meghan and Harry attended this event. In light of some of Prince Charles' recent comments that have been all over the news it's important that the Royal Family show that there is no place for racism if the Royal Family is to continue.

According to BBC weather, it´s 16degrees Celsius - not exactly very warm or hot...
I have to agree with those saying, "I would wear either a light jacket/cardigan or a shrug/shawl". Even I (always ready to give up a "dress code" IF it´s very hot) would wear a dress with at least a little "sleeve" (maybe 1/2 sleeve) to a memorial service and no "messy bun" or light coloured shoes. Even my daughter said so when I showed her the pictures - without even having heard my opinion yet..and she´s usually quite "modern" when it comes to "dress codes"....

If it wasn´t for a memorial service, I would be "thumbs up", totally!!!

  10. I'll go against the grain here and say that I love Meghan's hair up in these easy buns with the tendrils hanging down. I find it very fresh and youthful, when I had long hair this is how I wore it up too. I think we might be seeing her wedding hair style, if she decides to go with an updo.

I'm really liking this dress!! It is definitely a dress that I would wear to work or to a special occasion. I don't even mind the nude/beige shoes and clutch, lol.

This style for her wedding day? SUPERB CHOICE!! Don´t get me wrong, I like it, it suits her like crazy, she´s absolutely gorgeous with it! Just for a sombre occasion like that, I would have opted for the one she wore for the Queen´s birthday concert, a little less emphasis on the "stylish" part (which it is!!), a little more emphasis on the "formal" part....

    1. Why? I fail to see what’s wrong with her hair, or where the ridiculous term “messy bun” comes from. It’s neat, it’s combed, it’s suits her face well. Just because she doesn’t wear a hair net, it’s not messy. I actually appreciate that she doesn’t place a priority on visits to the salon.

      Delete
    2. I think she is trying not to be compared to any other previous or current royal. She is trying to set her own path and her own look. Remember she did not grow up under this intense spotlight. She did not have an education in the UK. She is learning as fast as anyone can and she is her own person with her own look. Personally I think it is fresh, approachable and suits her. If Prince Harry and Meghan wish to be seen as proactive in the world and make royalty seem relevant then this is the look she needs to have.

      Delete
    3. Anon, at least in my experience, her hair and the messy bun is not due to not visiting the salon. She I am sure goes as often as anyone else in the BRF. Her hair styling takes very regular coloring, straightening, styling, cutting etc

On the style front, I felt like Meghan was appropriately attired. I probably would have gone with a jacket, but with the cut of the dress, either way is fine.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Three things:

First, it's a celebration of his life NOT a funeral where covered arms and a hat would be appropriate for day.

Second, full on glam would have been wholly inappropriate. So, hair is fine.

African American women often make these subtle distinctions when attending church events.

Third, did you notice many of the women in the choir are wearing sleeveless black dresses too?

    Meghan knows her audience.

    1. I only wish she looked more formal. I think it’s the combination of the loose informal hair, informal shoulders showing, and playful/breezy hemline. If her shoulders were covered or the bottom of the dress straight I wonder if I would be bothered this much with a look for a memorial service. You’re right that it’s nit a funeral but it is to remember someone killed for the colour of his skin.

    2. Well said Anon 16:29, I agree! :)

    3. Excellent points, I agree wholeheartedly!

I believe that the dress' midi-length balances out whichever formal elements some people might feel are lacking from the sleeveless silhouette. The print reminds me of the nubbly texture of tweed, and that elevates the look considerably. She is elegant and wholly appropriate to the occasion of remembering Stephen Lawrence and celebrating his legacy.

      Delete
    4. No, it wasn't a funeral and I think people get that. But here the combination of sleeveless, V-neck and messy bun gave the outfit a more casual look. A simple blazer would have done wonders. Just consider yesterday's blazer and dress combination. It was a win-win IMO.

      Delete
  18. She looks stunning, and I love the look for a different occasion, but I agree with the other comments that a wrap or something to cover her shoulders and less messy hair would have been more appropriate.

Amazing how this family has turned this unimaginable tragedy into this powerful & positive work. Sad, so sad, that today, 25 years later, one has to think that this could happen again any day - not only in the UK, but all over Europe - and abroad........ :-(((

  22. I like to believe Meghan's style is evolving and this is a good example of a time when her (or her stylist's) better nature seems to prevail. The dress and entire ensemble was appropriate and although I would personally have added a small sweater or jacket for attending a church service... it's no big deal. I do agree with other commenters that she really needs to say "good-bye" to the hair-in-the-face look, but again, it's not my call.

    3. Thank you Roxana. Enough is enough. Guess what readers, it is her hair and she will wear it as she pleases. If you follow trends she is on target. Layers framing the face gives long hair a softer look. Look at her photos she is absolutely beautiful exactly as she is. Also if you shop regularly you will notice it is almost impossible to find good dresses with sleeves. It is no longer the style and hasn't been for many years. In the US especially the trend toward good health and fitness has existed for many years now. As a result women's arms in general look like a million dollars and designers produce dresses that allow us to show them off. Sleeveless dresses are worn year round with or without jackets. Love that Meghan has gone to yet another designer. Love her closet. As one reader noted they were not at a memorial service, they were celebrating life.

Meghan looks beautiful in these photos. Personally, I like the version of the dress with 3/4 sleeves, but that's just my personal preference. She looks lovely as usual. Obviously she has a preference for easy bun hair. Better get used to it.

  26. I think she looks just fine. It’s not his funeral, it’s a celebration of his life and his memory and yes to mark the day of his tragic passing, so she is dressed for the occasion. I love the dress on her and she looks nice today. This is one of the days where I really couldn’t care less about what she or anyone else is wearing though; it’s more about remembering Stephen Lawrence. God bless his family for coming through this tragedy and helping to make the world a better place.

  29. The sleeved version of this dress would also have been very nice, and satisfied those not comfortable with bare arms in Church. However, the skirt seems to be styled in a shorter length, and Meghan seems to choose midi or over the knee lengths for her skirts and dresses.

  31. Really love this look! I think Meghan is on a roll. The pattern is formal and professional, but not dour, and the sleeveless-ness is balanced by the midi-length. I do LOVE a midi-length dress. I think Meghan looks lovely here (especially nice subtle makeup). And she's clearly styled her hair and the tendrils are on purpose, though obviously not to everyone's taste. This is a real duchess look for me ;)

As an American, I wasn't familiar with Stephen's story, but all too familiar with other similar stories. Amazing work the family has done in the face of tragedy.

    2. Yes, totally agree! I think she's wearing thick, soft, false lashes and I once again adore her shade of lipstick. Her hair is beautiful. So soft and feminine. I can see that some ladies wouldn't wear this into a church but I would, and if she's comfortable then good for her.

  32. She is rocking her looks now! Love this entire styling, including her hair, as it looks soft but not messy. Yesterday's was perfection and so was the green dress/blazer combo.

Very exciting to see her so often! And thanks, Charlotte, for keeping us updated on both fronts today. Wonderfully exciting Monday.

  33. Love the dress and very suitable for the occasion, it was not a funeral. The hair looks very pretty on her but I find that slightly full messy look with tendrils quite difficult to achieve, it takes some time and some products. She clearly straightens her hair so do not know how much texture it has, but agree if your hair has texture a bit easier to achieve that casual look, but it still takes time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Her outfit is divine and her face is so lovely I just don't understand why those straggle-ly strands are in the way, sticking to her lipstick and obstructing her eyesight.

I'm old enough to vividly remember the story of this boy and the terrible thing that happened to him and how long his family had to fight for justice. It's good to seem him being remembered and celebrated in this way. His mother is inspirational.

    1. I think the strands are very purposeful, to frame her face with small wispy curls. I quite like them, myself. They're undone just enough to be chic without being a frumpy mess.

  35. Beautiful dress and I think her makeup is a bit more dramatic. I think she is really trying to "bring it". She knocked it out of the ball park today. She is so beautiful and I think we will get used to the messy bun (whether we like it or not) - she is from LA for goodness sake. At least she tended to the tendrils and curled them a bit PLUS she stopped playing with her hair today.

  38. I don't have a problem with sleeveless dresses in church. I think that the issue (if there really is one) is sleeveless plus a deep V neck. The two combined maybe show a little too much skin for some. Her makeup is lovely. In the spirit of the day and the joy over the arrival of Baby Cambridge, I will shut up about the hair.

  39. Barbara Bush's granddaughter Barbara wore a sleeveless black dress with a deep neckline to her grandmother's funeral. 44. Charlotte, you certainly outdid yourself today! Keeping up with the new little prince and H+M. I don't know how you managed but thank you! I absolutely love Meghan's look today. I think the nude purse and shoes gave a lightness to that lovely dress - all black would have been too heavy. I would have opted for a shrug or jacket because, while not a funeral, it was a memorial service in a church which usually calls for slightly more modest attire (covered shoulders). I do hope Meghan continues to wear the midi length. I think it's the perfect length for so many occasions. I don't like the messy hair but it's her look so we might as well get used to it. :)

I believe her parents brought her up yo be the achieved she is. She's done Uni. Stardom was great. But the stars said otherwise. Prince Harry & Megan are simply fabulous together. Her dresses maybe a departure from Kate. Megan is her own woman. Royal style not far from her former dress code. I questioned Kate in skinnies!! Overseas tours. Olympic games 2012. The royals are changing. And I far prefer Megan's updo. Her spoke bun is her au natural.

    1. "Her dresses maybe a departure from Kate. Megan is her own woman."

I was thinking something similar to that. I think we are so used to seeing Kate wearing coat dresses or a coat over a dress for these type of events, that we have come to expect the same of Meghan to do as well. Its probably why there seems to be such a divide over Meghan's outfits no matter the event she is attending because we know how Kate would have dressed for the occasion and we're used to that. I think its going to take some time getting use to Meghan's style as it is very different from Kate's.

Personally, I don´t expect her to wear coat dresses at all!! I don´t compare her to Kate either. What I personally thought about the dress without sleeves was totally what I felt personally - influenced very much by how I was brought up and how everybody in my family dresses to go to a Memorial Service (there are quite a lot of Catholics on one side of my family, they do that quite often) or to Church in general. Even my daughter agreed - although she´s obviously at an age where "dress codes" in general are challenged by the younger generation. So at least in my case, it´s got nothing to do with Kate, but how I felt about the dress choice for this occasion... My impression is that a lot of commenters felt the same way... I love the outfit entirely, just not 100% for the occasion..

What I really enjoy about this blog is that, through Charlotte's careful analysis of the background to H & M's activities, I am learning so much about social justice movements here and throughout the world. My 96 year old mother-in-law died last week and I have been thinking about what kind of memorial donation to make. She was American/Canadian like most of the family, a teacher, a battered wife in her 20s and 30s, but always spoke globally about wanting to do something for women and children. Because of H & M's careful planning of their wedding donations, I am inspired to do the same, take the time to study out where best to donate.

  57. Since I'll be fussing about a second marriage involving a veil and other traditional symbols of at least official virginity, I feel strange coming down on the side of "this dress is fine", but here I am. This is not my mamma's Royal Family. Meghan has no title and arguably is NOT representing the monarchy; her fiancé is the representative. She is simply a duchess in training and I expect her style will evolve once she grows into her new role.
I'm part of the Anglican Communion, and I would go to services in a sleeveless dress. I note most of the choir are in sleeveless dresses too. I'd wear a jacket, but I'd also get married for the second time looking like Camilla did.

    1. Oooh! Maybe she will? Imagine a blush or gold tinted dress??

    2. I think Camilla and Meghan are in completely different situations! Charles and Camilla had a rather infamous beginning to their relationship. They were older when they married, and he and Camilla both had grown children. It was both situationally and age appropriate that Charles and Camilla's second wedding was more subdued. Meghan's first wedding was no more than a blink, and it's a first wedding for Harry. They're young, and they have no kids. I say go all out! I think those old traditions about white and veils are just that - traditions, not rules.

      Delete
    3. As Greybird K mentioned, there are ladies in the choir without sleeves, and there is one woman in the audience wearing an OFF THE SHOULDER top! I think Meghan's dress hit the right notes. If she was cold, she would have worn a jacket.

Leaving 'sleeve-gate', though, I thought this dress really suited Meghan and looked lovely on her! I also thought her hair looked beautiful.

      Delete
    4. Veils actually have to do with “hiding” the bride from the days of arranged marriages. Where the groom couldn’t bail if the bride was “ugly” because the transfer of “property” had already happened. It’s actually quite a horrible tradition going back to its roots. I have no problem with brides wearing them today because obviously people are doing it more for aesthetic reasons and they can look quite pretty. I wouldn’t have a problem if Meghan wore one but I’ve seen many weddings over the last 10 years or so where they are skipped or only affixed to the back of the head.

Meghan has her own distinct style and at this point in her life knows what she likes and what works, even if it doesn't "work" for some of you personally. She exudes confidence in whatever she's wearing. It's refreshing to see she's true to herself and not trying to be copy Kate's look.

  59. In Spain, every church has a big sign saying "do not show your shoulders". You don't need to wear proper sleeves, just cover your shoulders a bit more than that picture shows. Here this dress is consider inappropriate for a memorial service, in Italy it'd be a scandal of epic proportions.

I read that she's still working with her old stylist, I guess she's comfortable with her but she needs to find a British one so this doesn't happen again, not because of what the media could say but to feel more at ease in this situations.

Anon at 22:59: I remember that, too. In Southern Italy, women often wear sleeveless dresses and then crocheted shawls which they drape around their shoulders (sometimes head and shoulders) and then take off after church, because of the heat. Or they wear chiffon-sleeves instead.

  61. Just thinking about it, she and her stylist have to be working WAY ahead on her calendar. It's not an easy thing to plan that many outfits that far in advance. The searching, the ordering, the try-on, the alterations, the alternatives... not easy, and very time-consuming. Very difficult. And she's making it harder by staying with a stylist who's out of her sartorial comfort zone and on the other side of the Atlantic.

    1. Good point abou the reality of having to plan outfits so far in advance. Jessica Mulroney is very skillful, but also a little cutting edge and prone to glamour, she and Meghan just need to watch the protocol issue a wee bit more - no big deal - overall they are doing a fantastic job. And think how boring our style watching would be if they didn’t have an occasional faux pas! At the end of the day, what really matters is Meghan’s genuine warmth and enthusiasm for her new role - and Harry’s very evident happiness and pride.

  62. fabulous. perfect. messy bun done meticulously. every other element spot on. except...those silly sleeves.
    and yeah, it matters.
First off- I'm an American from the north- living here-in the London area- and it was QUITE nippy today.Farenheit- I think it ws a high of 57 or so? I took a few trips down the street today- and you can be sure- I didnt leave without a shrug/sweater/light cardigan on. I didnt sit in my house without a cardi on today either...and I can assure you- those lovely old stone churches are NOT well/at all heated. brrr! I sat in misery simply trying to comprehend how she's not shivering to death- or begging Prince Harry to borrow his jacket!
Which brings me to my real point. I've immigrated/lived in a few countries in my day. It is thought when one does not comply to the "norm"-(and in this case, despite the one or two other sleeveless situations others saw which I missed entirely!) the "norm" was sleeves:
one is either mistaken for an "ignorant"/unknowledgeable American ..or...worse- it can be read as the horrid term an "ugly" American. In other words- one does best to read one's crowd - know your circumstances/audience. When in Rome do as the Romans do. And if she's a member of the "leading Roman family"- I think she needs ot interpret that a bit better. It cealry can be poorly interpeted- as the abv comments show...
I froze for her the entire time- and despite everything else being "adorably and SPOT ON Meghan"- it was that sleeveless thing going on that said:"I'm clueless here" ( in which case someone needs to tip her off better)- or "I just really don't care." There is nothing about Megham that seems to point to the latter- so there in is the problem.
I surely do think she could read the audience better in this arena. Gorgeous arms, too- agreed! but.... sitting next to the MP- ( and at a one up seat to bootfrom the MP)- I'd say follow the MP for tips...
I sturggle to think of the days in England the entire year when the heat beggars for sleeveless gear. this was not one of them.

    2. I think it would be good to ask why is there an objection to Meghan's dress being sleeveless? In Spain and Italy and more patriarchal cultures, it used to be that women even had to cover their heads with a mantilla in Church. Isn't this the kind of mysogynistic patriarchal attitude we are trying to get rid of in the Me too movement? If I had fat, flabby arms, I would not wear a sleevless dress until I worked out and got them in shape, if possible.
Meghan has beautiful toned arms. She is young. One day she may have fat, flabby arms and can't wear sleeveless dresses. I say let her have her youth!!!

    3. You summed it up Oliver UK really well.

So here's the thing - I'm perplexed. I've held back on a couple of occasions to comment on the various events MM and HH have had recently attended because I just couldn't quite figure out what I felt about some of her fashion choices. I still don't. And I commend Meghan for jumping right in and hitting the ground running so brilliantly. But. Those silly lack of sleeves as Oliver UK put it sums it up.

It's the nuisances of dress code in the UK which Meghan is slighty missing here, through no fault of her own just she's not reading the appropriateness of her choice of outfits. So while I love the fact they're jumping right on in there, these little mistakes are appearing to magnify - which worries me about what first impressions she's making with her adopted country.

I guess the americans amongst you will say - hey Michelle Obama did this and it looked great, MM is keeping true to her style - and lets face it she's got great arms. But I think sometimes Fashion doesn't translate well. Sure, "Style" is universal and Meghan has it by the bucketful, but "Fashion" is just that. What's fashion in one area/country/group is not in another. A kick flare, a Priarie ruffle or a bold print works in different countries etc... And maybe us Brits need a good shaking up when it comes to thinking what's appropriate for church, how much skin to bare etc... but there are things to consider.

This was a celebration of a life, but a very high profile subject and one that drew not only the RF but head's of Government. Harry representing Charles/QE and Meghan was next to the PM( indeed in order of precendent she was ahead of the PM) and most in Church had a jacket on/covered arms. Joining the Royal Family there has been a certain etiquette be it about general historic codes or simply not to offend people (in our multi-faith society showing alot of flesh can be offensive to some) and most people would be respectful in Church of that depending on the strictness of faith. Meghan's not part of that family yet so she can get away with some rule breaking. But it was very obvious from the footage she stood out from everyone. And in my opinion it jarred. Just as she did at the 1st commonwealth meeting in the sundress and casually draped jacket. Haters are always going to hate, but I don't think she's being advised correctly and this is causing me to worry for her, she may be creating the wrong impression - too casual, not appropriate, ignorant, brash etc... which I certainly don't think is the case at all.

Discussing this the other day someone quoted that line out of Evita "the actress hasn't learnt the lines you'd liked to hear". She seems to be setting a fantastic pace but at what cost to her setting the right image within a new country, when a few careful tweaks would get us talking more about the causes rather than how much skin's on show.

I'm still Team Meghan, but part of me thinks she needs just to take a breath and get to know us and let the UK get to know her. It's one thing being a giddy kipper but this is a long haul race.

    4. 🌸 Mr. D, I think you said it all. It is about attitude.
I was more than annoyed when she gave that seemingly mocking laugh after the performance of “Waiting for the World to Change” at the Commonwealth service, sort of as if to say, no one has the savvy or chutzpah to get the job done as good as you and I do Harry. An attitude exhibited also, in my opinion, by her comments at the Foundation Forum, and both times said in the midst of many people who have given years in service to others. A little more humility and respect for the efforts others have made and for customs of the culture would be nice, in my opinion. Hopefully she isn’t wearing the sleeveless dresses with an attitude of I’m changing the culture here (dress code) because I think it needs changing so I’m changing it and wearing sleeveless dresses where and when I want. Just some observations and opinions. No offense to anyone.

Oliver and Mr D, you raise some very interesting points. It was interesting to hear an American who lives in London, too, now, share the experiences.
Mr. D., I spent one year in Britain, ok, about 30 years ago, things might have changed, but what struck me many times was, that the British were very informal on many occasions, where Germans were shocked about the informality - and then there were about as many times were they were "terribly" formal, where us Germans thought "Why the fuzz?".
It was very confusing at the beginning, but I quickly learned to ask others around me for advice - beforehand, if possible. Or I just held myself very much in the back and just listened and watched in order to get a "sense" of what to do/how to behave. Not in order to "give up my personality" - but out of respect for the country and its people who were welcoming me with open arms. I´m not saying Meghan isn´t doing that, just to clarify that it´s not about "giving yourself up" or something like that.
I´ve seen some Germans come and go during my stay in Britain - and I have to agree, those who tended to ignore the specific ways in Britain were indeed very quickly "not in the good books" anymore. I´m 100% sure Meghan means very well, but I sometimes fear as well, that there´s a danger these things might be seen the way you describe and, unfortunately, where prejudices could easily creep in (reg. "Americans"). It would make it so unnecessarily difficult for her - which would be a shame, and a huge missed opportunity....

  65. I agree that if it is that cold, one would naturally at least take a jacket. I guess we can assume she just likes the way it looks. Other women were sleeveless, and I bet more would be if they looked like Meghan. Again, I saw Barbara Bush's family at the funeral and never thought about the sleeveless bit until this day. If Spanish churches have a dress code, then that is their rule. I know that I see people dress "terribly" for church in the US---short stretchy shorts and worn t-shirts, but at least they are there, in church. First we couldn't get the jacket off of MM and now we can't get it on her. :)

    1. Sorry Alison, I don't understand well..
In Spain you needn't to cover your arms or shoulders at all..at least at a Catholic Church...you can ever wear shoulder straps...

      Delete
  66. I have to agree with all the sleeveless comments, there is just a time and a place for covering your shoulders and this is that time and place. Everyone else is wearing a jacket, this is a beautiful dress for a formal lunch or a evening event but not for a memorial service. I really like Meghan and I want her to shine, and this is my only issue with her. We all have to dress for different occasions in our lives and dress respectfully for the occasions. I think it’s common sense to be able to judge the occasion and know what will be expected of you. People living very glamorous stylish lives can get away with breaking the rules but Meghan is now living a royal life and representing the royal family and has to dress a certain way to reflect this. If I was attending a work event, I would be expected to dress in a certain way to represent my company. Equally we just a religious family occasion for my son and I feel I dressed appropriately for that occasion. Sinead

  69. Thank you for providing the extra background information on Stephen. It’s truly such a senseless tragedy. Something USA can relate to unfortunately. Particularly in recent years. But I admire the family for making the best of things and establishing something positive in the face of something so negative and heartbreaking.

  70. Sleeves or not, she is underdressed considering who she is sitting with (HRH Harry and the PM).

  71. I was raised by mom who always told me I could not go to church in anything sleeveless - it was disrespectful to do so. So I always have even just a cap sleeve on my garment for church - even in the hottest part of summer and our church is not air-conditioned - we just have fans. While I like this dress a lot, I think she should have worn a jacket over it or something vs having exposed arms at this kind of service, this time of year.

  72. I think things will continue to change. Harry is very very lucky that Meghan is willing to take on all the public scrutiny. Royal rules will change. George may become a physician and "king" part-time. I just red that the majority of Brits are OK with a king in a same-sex marriage---quite a change from the 1950s! Instead of Meghan toeing the line precisely, perhaps it is better to let her do what she chooses and then enjoy all the good she adds to the mix. The Queen was very careful to ensure Kate was happy to avoid what happened to Diana. All the Twitter criticism is nuts, but I assume Meghan is too smart to read it.

  73. Sleeveless, in a church for a memorial service. Doesn't she have protocol assistants that can help her dress for her appearances, yet? If not, she should. Lovely dress otherwise, just needed a jacket.

  74. SG---I was getting a bit obsessed with MM's jewelry and tried to figure out how much the serpent trace bracelet cost---found a heavier one and a ring but not what she wore, but the heavier version was about $19,000 and the ring was $1000+ reduced from $2500. At the end of a year or two, it would be great to see a roundup of her jewelry. I pretty much love Kate's earrings but she doesn't indulge us by having all these extras. :)

    1. 🌸 Thanks, Allison. I knew the “Serpents Trace” bracelet she wore would be pricey. It is a heavier piece and done in 18kt. gold.
I think a review of her increasing jewelry collection would be fun. I also think seeing her repeat more items would be fun. Hopefully she will do repeats, yeh?

  77. I can't imagine coping as Stephen Laurence's family has, and contributing so much to society in his name. Such an attack on one of my children would surely destroy me. What a portrait in courage.

As for Meghan, she should have worn the other dress from the same designer that Charlotte showed, and her hair is back to messy. I do think she wore the nude pumps in honor of Kate, who was busy giving birth. That was nice.

Another crazy attack on innocent people, this time Toronto.... I´m sure Meghan is devastated..... Toronto had become something of a "home town" to her...
Honestly, all I´m left praying is: "PLEASE MAKE THIS CRAZINESS S T O P, Lord, PLEASE." :-((((

Right, I thought I do a little research and took to "Debrett´s London" - the UK "to-go-to" for anything regarding "etiquette". On their website it says regarding "Memorial Services":

    Dress Codes
"Conventionally, dress is sombre – dark suits and black ties for men, dark clothes for women – but unbroken black is not necessary. At a very grand service, traditional morning dress may be worn, in which case most women would wear formal day dress with hats. However, if the person being commemorated and their family are informal characters, it is not necessary to adhere to a strict dress code."
    Here´s the link: https://www.debretts.com/expertise/rites-of-passage/death/memorial-services/

So, the only question is: how FORMAL was the event? I say morning dress and hat would be "too much" - maybe the invite didn´t say anything regarding dress code, but I didn´t get the impression that the service was very "informal", either.

I guess she didn´t break any official dress codes then, still, a lot of us would have personally decided to have at least small sleeves and maybe even dark accessories to mark the occasion and consider the location... But maybe we´re all old-fashioned and are in desperate need for some "freshening-up" in that department?.... ;-)))))

  80. Meghan whatever you do know you'll never be good enough for Harry.
Your family, your hair your legs and even a nothing you will be reproached even if it is only 5
    month that you make commitments
You are not entitled to any error because nothing will be forgiven.
Courage because I think you're very good

  81. I love Meghan's outfit and appearance, she wears the dress far better than the model ;-) Perhaps we can keep in mind that since yesterday, Prince Harry is sixth in line to the throne, so his fiancee is not expected to be as formal as other royal ladies. Besides that, I'm totally sure that Meghan gets good professional advice for her styling, she must be interested in making a good impression without losing her own style. It is much more relatable than the styles of other royal ladies, and then I've heard about the fairness and tolerance of the English regarding personal peculiarities...

  82. I really do think Meghan is briefed on dress code and that if she wore something people around would tell her about it.

  84. My apologies for the typos above everyone. Clearly my spell check was not on last night.lol... Thanks Mr D, UK for your input. I'm also very minorly in the public eye here- so I speak from personal experience as an "outsider" I do know how quickly and viciously one's "ignorance of the rules" - (of which I am still sorting myself here)- can be mis-read as a brash, ugly or "rude" American....amongst those that wish to speak that way of someone.
Those "opinions" are something I feel quite sure that is the last type of sentiment that Meghan is looking to engender...
Thanks for publishing the Debrett's link, Eve...I think that that suffices for the vast majority of people there....However, it doesn't say," and when one is a 'member' of the BRF sitting above the MP, one should ..." and that's the problem. She was technically, asides from the Laurence family possibly, the highest standing female there-and with that, imho only, perhaps her unique situation one-ups Debrett's even... :O Beyond that, I will restate I think she looked fabulous- ( even the messy bun).
Time and place for everything...and following the rules, even IF they are "unwritten" ones is what the BRF just "does"? perhaps ? fondly- Oliver

  85. I didn't see any hats, so at least she conformed in that area. I did see some singers in sleeveless or strapless dresses and I assume that there was no disapproval for them. I think MM likes sleeveless and that may be a small price to pay. She may have to be allowed some personal preferences :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Meghan or not, rules are changing when it comes to these royal families and the BRF will not be spared. For me, Meghan is the window to how it's gonna be like, yes and I mean sleeveless and not only that, the walking behind royals and making women to wear hats/fascinators. A lot of these royal rules come across as misogynistic.

Diana changed some and the BRF loosened up. The queen already changed one rule and Princess Charlotte gets to benefit.

And oh did you see the music they chose for the wedding?

  87. I had some trouble composing this. And really tried hard, albeit unsuccessfully, to find a way to express my thoughts with some humour and lightness. I am not about referencing the clutching of pearls and the wearing of hose. I don't think that is the issue. But if I am to be honest about it the criticisms of her dress made my heart hurt - too easy to imagine how it would feel to be the recipient. And respectfully I would suggest that this perhaps could be the test - how would it make me feel or how would I feel if this narrative was directed at someone I love. Because. We are not talking about the style, the fit or the attractiveness of what she wore. It appears that on this front the view is almost entirely positive. Under discussion is whether or not she was respectful. I will leave it at that.

She looked wonderful. This was a celebration of a life stolen by hate but more than that this was a celebration of the strength of a family that have devoted their lives to making a difference.

I have noted that it would seem that one of the other blogs devoted to Meghan's style may have closed comments on this engagement. If this is true, I would think this speaks volumes.

    Can we please be kind?

  88. Why is it so many freak out so much when Meghan wears a sleeveless? Last time people acted like she had exposed her underwear or something, to be honest the "punishment" does not fit the "crime" when it comes to some of these negative comments. I came to this website to have fun after running away from some aweful commenting Meghan websites. I thought this website is where people have constructive criticism and have fun but lately it's more criticism than fun. Even when she wears something majority likes, it's all about "see we give credit where it's due, now she is appropriate or elegant", where is the fun in that? Then some posters make several posts criticising, we heard it the first time but is it necessary to keep at it because really it just becomes piling on.
And Stephen Lawrence's case is really heartbreaking and a big deal. Someone who lost their LIFE because of skin color and didn't get justice until later, are we all that fixated on what Meghan is wearing thet we can not give a moment to this family?
I will be honest if this website posters are fixated on Meghan's clothes more than anything else I think I am better off not coming here. It's just Charlotte puts so much background in the events and I enjoy that but I assumed the posters match the efforts as well but this seems not to be the case.

    1. I love the background information Charlottes provides. I cannot wait to read more about the music that has been chosen. I feel like at this wedding we will get to see Great Things about Great Britain.

As for the clothes, I love that she is doing her. I really don't like when women judge each other over items like clothing. Unless the clothes are torn and indecent I don't think I have the right to say what is appropriate or inappropriate for Meghan.

  89. I consider myself extremely conservative; I'm also in my mid-50's so probably "old" by the standard of most readers here, yet I do not see any problem with this dress. If it had straps I might have a problem, but sleeveless? Really? I think it is a beautiful dress and Megan looks fabulous in it.
