Meghan Joins The Princes for Anzac Day Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving!

Meghan joined Prince Harry and Prince William for the Anzac Day Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey.

William greeted Meghan upon arrival.

On Monday, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge welcomed a beautiful baby boy at St Mary's Hospital. The Palace said he planned to take a couple of weeks off to spend with the family. However, this morning, William decided he wanted to join Harry and Meghan at the service. I'm sure it's been a joyous and exhausting couple of days. No doubt Uncle Harry and Aunt Meg have met the new arrival.

William and Harry enjoy an incredibly close bond which clearly extends to Kate and Meghan. Harry fondly describes Kate as his "sister" and it's clear William has welcomed his future sister-in-law with open arms. With the arrival of Baby Cambridge and the wedding just three weeks away - it's a very special time at KP.

Inside the Church, William said everyone is "in good form, luckily." He added: "Sleeping is going reasonably well so far, so he's behaving himself, which is good."

The annual service remembers the Gallipoli landings of 25th April 1915, and all Australians and New Zealanders who have given their lives in the service of their countries.

This year marks the 103rd anniversary of the landings on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25th April 1915. At Gallipoli, Australian and New Zealand forces fought for the first time under a united command as the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or more famously the ANZACs.

The Gallipoli campaign exacted a heavy toll on both sides. Some 50,000 Allied troops from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, France, Canada, Newfoundland and India lost their lives. Including those wounded or evacuated for sickness, the total number of Allied casualties number around 250,000. The Turkish forces lost over 86,000 in addition to those wounded.

A video from Victoria Murphy.

Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance for Australia and New Zealand. It is commemorated as a public holiday in both countries with memorial ceremonies held at various locations. At 5 am, Harry and Meghan attended the Dawn service at Wellington Arch.

At 11 am, Prince Harry laid a wreath on behalf of Her Majesty at the Wreath Laying and Parade Service at the Cenotaph.

The trio were welcomed inside.

St Andrew's Cathedral Choir from Sydney performed.

An overview from inside the Abbey.

It was a traditional church service, incorporating an 'Act of Remembrance', the Last Post and Kemal Ataturk's words from Anzac Cove read by the Turkish Ambassador to the UK.

Flags are borne through the Abbey church and placed in the Sacrarium.

One of my favourite images of Harry and Meghan from the day.

A peek at the Order of Service.

New Zealand High Commissioner Sir Jerry Mateparae read Micah 4: 1-5: “But we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever.”

Australian High Commissioner Alexander Downer reads St John 15: 9-17. “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

During his address, the Dean of Westminster spoke of the gallantry and comradeship of the troops.

Turkish Ambassador Abdurraham Bilgic read the words of Ataturk: “There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours...”

A beautifully poignant and reflective service.

“They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”

The Royal party depart.

You can view the service below. At the end, there's footage of Meghan meeting representatives.

A touch of sartorial diplomacy by Ms Markle today - opting for a bespoke jacket and skirt by New Zealand born designer Emilia Wickstead. Ms Wickstead is already a firm royal favourite; The Duchess of Cambridge and The Countess of Wessex have worn her pieces on multiple occasions. It's one of the first custom made ensembles Meghan's debuted since the royal engagement. I thought it a perfect choice for the occasion. The pink jacket showcased below bears notable similarities to Meghan's.

The Countess of Wessex blog notes Sophie has the suit in pale blue since 2014 and has worn it for garden parties and Royal Ascot.

Meghan's elegant black hat is a bespoke creation by Philip Treacy. It appears to be a custom version of the Beret with Dragonflies.

Meghan carried the Jimmy Choo J Box clutch.

Meghan accessorised with her Cartier Galanterie earrings.

And a poppy.

A special word of thanks to Perth Fashion for her outstanding work identifying this look.

Lest we forget.

  1. The look at both services today was good…appropriate and respectful to the occasion. But why a change of outfits? The first one would have done for both events.

    1. It doesn’t look like a big change. She probably took off her coat because it’s warmer at noon than it is at 5am and a smaller hat/fascinator for an indoor church service.

      Delete
    2. Maybe because the weather is colder at dawn, which Valls for a coat. But the temperature is warmer in the afternoon so a lighter outfit is better.

It might have been chilly this morning and this is more weather appropriate....? And that gray with Harry sleek suit...? Nah...this is glorious :)

    4. What's good for an outdoor event at dawn might not be comfortable for an afternoon event indoor.

      Delete
    5. I think maybe the first outfit was worn for warmth, it was chilly at 5am and the second as the sun would have warmed the day up.
Love both outfits, she looks great ✔

      Delete
    6. Okay, I agree that the coat might have been too warm to wear to a service later in the day, but it wasn't simply that Meghan took her coat off. The dress under the coat, was not the suit she was later wearing. There is also a change of hat, shoes, and purse. I would have opted to wear the entire outfit for the day, just removing the coat when necessary. Whatever, I was glad to see that both outfits were very appropriate for the occasions.

    7. Maybe the jacket she wore in the afternoon wouldn't fit under the coat she wore this morning. Maybe she just feel like wearing two completely different outfits for each outings. I do that sometimes. Its such a trivial matter to nitpick about.

      Delete
    8. I have no idea what she was wearing under her coat in the a.m so I can't judge if she should have wore in later.

      Delete
    9. Those events are hours apart. After the dawn service she may had returned home, remove her clothes put on her pyjama, sleep a bit, wake up, and wear a different outfit involving a jacket not as warm as before but not to lightweight. VoilΓ .

    10. Anonymous 19:44, not nitpicking, just asking a question and stating what I would have done.

    11. The two services were several hours apart, is my guess. And I suspect it does distinguish one service from the other.

    12. Just because somebody has a different opinion doesn’t mean they are nitpicking! Let’s not bash each other for having different ideas or commenting in the comment section!!

I like that she did two different outfits. They were different events at different times and locations. The morning outfit would’ve been too casual for the afternoon and the afternoon far too cold for the morning.

  3. Loved her choice of outfit at the dawn service and again now !

Have to applaud Meghans work ethic !!! She is not even married yet she has taken on so much of the royal workload and has done a lot of engagements !
I am sure if Meghan wanted to she could have taken it easy and concentrated only on her upcoming wedding and enjoyed her free time . But she’s out and about looking calm and smiling even with so much of criticism of all sorts on her !! Commendable !

She s turning out to be my favourite royal based solely on her work ethic so far !!!

Yes, it´s fascinating that we already very much see her as a "working Royal", although she could very well "hide behind closed doors" very much until the wedding day - so far she´s done what she´s "promised": to be out and about and get to know the country and the people, the "Royal business" - and, boy, has she made some waves already... We´re talking about fashion, culture, women, structures in society, cultural and religious norms, perceptions, pre-conceived notions, upbringings, just to name a few, just right here on this blog!!!! If she continues "shakin´us all up" like this - we´re in for a ride!! Personally, I can only say: I´m all up for it!

      Delete
    5. Seems like after working as an actress, that this feels like light duty. I know the royals have to do research and get briefed before their engagements but honestly, it's not difficult 'work'. I love that she's taking it on whether she has the protocol figured out completely or not. Harry had to nudge her to come along where as another may have been very aware that Prince William sets the timing of the chats, the coming and the going. That might be difficult for her to dial in.

Is it me or does she have the thinnest ankles on the planet?

      Delete
    6. Tiny ankles! I was just looking at them before I read your comment!

      Delete
    7. I certainly agree that Meghan had done a lot of engagements since their engagement was announced, but I cannot image her not doing so since she left a job and country behind to marry Harry. If she wasn't out and about with him, it would not be very good PR-wise.

      Delete
    8. I agree about loving her work ethic! I am one of the commenters who has had some quibbles with her styling and think she has missed big time a couple of times but that is small in comparison to how much I adore the amount of work she is doing and the kind of work she is doing. I see her finding her way with the clothes and they are just packaging really. The amount/type of work shows her work ethic and heart and the insides really count! She is always beautiful because of this, even when I disagree with her clothes choices! That said, I love her outfits for the events today.

Very elegant, both times today. She seems to have ordered that hat in several colours... she really seems to like it!!
I´m just asking out of curiousity: Has anyone ever worn a so-called "fascinator" here? They can look incredibly stylish - and the designs!! - but I often wondered how easy (or maybe rather not) they are to wear?

I´m sure she´s got a ton of black skirts/blouses/jackets already and will add to them in the future. If any of you had a look in my wardrobe, I assure you, most of you would ask: "All very nice, Eve, but WHY do you need 6 black trousers, all similar style and 7 black jackets, all similar style, too??? And about the same number in dark blue (various shades)??" LOL!!! Most people wouldn´t even realize that I´m wearing a new pair of trousers, because they all look so similar. Well, but I know the difference and find this specific pair SO much more fitting/elegant/comfy or whatever... women...LOL!!!

    3. I did - for the civil part of my wedding. It was easy to wear and I loved that I didn’t have to go all out with my hair as I did for the religious ceremony (white dress and veil and all that).
Very envious that it is still more a British thing and not that common in my country.

C., thanks for your input!! I sometimes wondered, as there are some quite elaborate fascinators out there, whether they are comfortable to wear - or whether your are constantly worrying about the whole thing on your head - but I thought them to be often so stylish and special and maybe more "lightweight" on your head, so more comfortable, and I was glad it was confirmed! :-)))

  14. She looks lovely, this criticism is never-ending.πŸ™„ Earlier the hat was too floppy now it's why did she change her (very warm) outfit from earlier? If she had taken off the warm coat, then the "know it alls" would say she is just wearing a dress and no coat....even though the dress is long sleeved under the warm winter coat. Both of today's outfits are just perfect, when she looks great we should applaud.

    1. To me, it looks like a different dress. The early morning dress seems a smooth fabric at the hem peeking out of her coat. At The Abbey, the ensemble has a textured fabric.

    2. Also, different shoes, purse and hat. She didn't just take off her coat.

    3. Also, different shoes, purse and hat. She didn't just take off her coat.

      Delete
    4. I think it's different too. I suspect this morning was just a basic black dress, since she was not planning on removing the coat, which seemed like the 'main outfit'. Then later, she wore a different dress as her 'main outfit' since she didn't need a coat.

  17. nailed it twice in one day...sartorially speaking. Good go of it all I'd say...hosiery even,oh dear. lol
I'd somewhat concur with Penny's comments as above, but I think it's rather explicable/justifiable. Given that it was a super cold early morning outdoor engagment here, dark and not easy to find your footing, the more practical shoes in the early a.m. were warrented. SAve placing the spikes on cobblestones for bright daylight in my book! My guess is this is the dress she had on under the coat anyway, and the hat change was appropriate for the indoor church event, where everyone doesn't need to be peering around your headgear..So my guess is your just looking at a change of accessories is all. Changing the bag, was a titch unnecessary ,imho, but hardly noticeable.

    1. Me too Senorita Dee! This is absolutely my favourite Meghan outfit so far - there's something so Jackie Kennedy/Grace Kelly about it. Gorgeous!

I also love that it's by Emilia Wickstead, so a nod to New Zealand on ANZAC Day - perfect. Does that mean that this morning's coat may have been by a designer with Australian links I wonder?

  19. Meghan has truly hit the ground running! Gorgeous and appropriate clothing choices, warm and appreciative attitude, openness with the crowds, attending a wide range of events (and a large number of events) - and all of it was done pre-wedding, when expectations for her involvement are probably at their lowest. I wasn't prepared to be as impressed as I am - but so far, she's a natural! As others have said, her work ethic is just excellent! Good for her, Harry, and the Royal Family!

    3. Apparently she has always been that way. She was the leader in her childhood groups, establishing little theatre productions. She was homecoming queen at high school and the head recruiter in her sorority. She created “The Tig” and a very professional looking Instagram. Her teachers said she was always outgoing and a step ahead of the curriculum and she was always concerned about social causes.

I think HRH the Queen is going to love her for her work ethic and easy way of connecting with people. (For those who mention Diana, the Queen and Diana might have had their differences but the Queen did respect Diana's work ethic as well.)

Agree with you, Ivy Lin, on all points. I like the "twists" - as I call them (and I thought Meghan once called them like that, too, when she spoke about who inspires her stylewise - wasn´t it Carine Roitfeld, former editor of French Vogue who inspired her? Gosh, I´m getting old...) - even if I sometimes go down the dreaded "appropriate for the occasion?" path... ;-))))

  22. She looks great but why do her shoes always look way too big for her? Is it just me that thinks this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Jean, my right foot is bigger than my left by about a 1/4 of a size I'd say. It may be she has this problem as well. Or how she's walking? I have always preferred my heels to be snug for more security but to each their own. They do look at least one full size too big on her left foot.

      Delete
    2. I forgot to say as well, I noticed she had a scar on her left foot below her big toe. Possibly from bunion surgery? Maybe she needs the extra space for comfort? I don't know. I commend her dedication to beautiful shoes. I couldn't do it.

      Delete
    3. Its a Hollywood trick to prevent swelling and blisters. They all do that in HW.

      Delete
    4. Meghan's left foot may be larger but also remember, the higher the heel the more the foot will slide forward. All her weight is on the left foot in the closeup photo, so that is when you would notice a gap at the heel.

      Delete
    5. Meghan has bunions, she got surgery on one of her feet but the other one still has it so she obviously has to pick a pair of shoes appropriate for her bigger foot. If you look her photos from pre engagement days, you can even see a scar from the surgery on her left big toe. She’s human just like us

  23. Meghan knocked it out of the park, wearing an outfit that's appropriate to the occasion while being true to herself. This outfit will remain in style for years to come.

Given the number of official engagements she's had lately, plus planning the wedding, she must be spending plenty of time on shopping and fittings. Once she's married and settled, I look forward to seeing her relaxed style as well.

  25. Seems weird to say this about a memorial outfit, but this is the best Meghan has looked since the engagement, imo. I’ve been thinking about it and it seems I prefer simple, sleek lines, without too much bulk or hanging parts.

  26. Wow, this is the most royal outfit I think we've seen on Meghan. It still manages to look like her, though, which I like. She is sleek and polished and very appropriate for the occasion. Also liked her morning outfit, to me it looks like she was wearing a different dress under the coat than this one. Totally understand the change of outfit. Sitting outside in cold weather a warm coat over a lighter dress would be warm and not too bulky. The gorgeous suit for the afternoon outing was warm enough on its own. If it was me I would have gone in the early morning, returned home, maybe even taken a nap, cleaned up, eaten, changed clothes and headed back out feeling a bit refreshed.

She's played it rather safe with hats so far (not a criticism, just an observation). 34. Another OMG sartorial choice for Meghan. She consistently hits it out of the park! This woman knows who she is, what she likes, and she wears it beautifully. She chooses fashion, but she has style, and that's the huge difference. I love that she has found her color palette - her capsule wardrobe if you will - and she sticks to it and stays in her edgy, comfort-zone style spot. 35. I love everything about this outfit.... the modern retro look, the smaller hat choice, the simple clutch. This look, the Jackie O dress, the Stella McCartney cape dress and the Commonwealth service white coat with blue dress were PERFECT. Her day looks are where I can be a bit divided. I like them, as in it is something I would wear or could actually wear in my day to day life. And she always looks beyond gorgeous. But part of the fun for me as a royal watcher has always been to see someone seem perfectly polished and just look so put together. It is a projected fantasy, it’s just escapism to look at someone who is doing some good in the world while just looking like they stepped out of a magazine. So I am thoroughly enjoying these recent looks from Meghan; the more glamorous makeup, beautifully styled hair etc. I think she doesn’t really do her “something a bit off” with these outfits for the big occasions. Everything is pretty spot on but in a relaxed way. And I think her evening/ serious occasions outfits are going to wow us. Bring it girl BRING IT. Now I’m looking forward to her wedding dress even more and her reception dress if we see it. I also thought about seeing her at the new prince’s christening alongside (my favorite who got me really into royal watching) Kate. Such a fun fun year!!!!

    1. I agree with your favourites list and would add her women’s day blue coat with white turtleneck. I think the white apron dress and no sleeves were total misses (not just one thing “off) but I see her polished like this and believe she’ll get there.

For this one, the “off” or unusual could be the texture. It is different and special. The clutch and the cape at the queens Birthday were the”off” unique in my opinion. She’s still keeping her style “off”ness even in the fancier times I think.

I'm not sure why some are questioning her choice on a change of clothing. I believe she did change - her skirt is about 6" high from her ankles versus the coat is about 10" - but I'm ok with that.

A church service versus the outside event is quite different. I thought she looked wonderful for both.

    1. Of course she changed—the events were 7 hours apart. I see nothing wrong with it either. Loved both outfits, hats and accessories. The hat and coat worn at the dawn service looked very 40s to me—a nod to that era. I normally find Wickstead’s designs unappealing, but I loved this outfit in black. And Meghan really rocks the beret style hat (with her fine features). In the first pic at the church service, she looked like Pippa.

    2. Plus you can see very long sleeves under her coat and also the texture of the fabric of the skirt or dress appears light and smooth in the photos I saw.

  37. I just get so tickled seeing the "New Trio" lol :) I know it's temporary, but I have a smile as I see Harry as part of a couple & Will as the 3rd wheel. :) I just love seeing her transition or pivot into the Senior Royal position (including ensembles). We were all so curious to see how she would do it, while still holding on to her own style. I was not entirely sure how it would go, but I am just so thrilled for her! It's so fun seeing Meghan take on The Royal Look! Love seeing her New Twists on The Coat Dress Ensembles & Hats! She's nailed it! She's found her own take on the Royal Ensembles, while looking so very much herself! :) My only quibble, I think her early morning look would have been striking with a black overcoat. The grey was a twist I would not have thought of & I know grey is an accepted "mourning" color... but I'm an old school gal & will always have a personal preference for all black, for such occasions.

  38. I forgot to comment on how I loved seeing her First Bespoke Ensemble & Hat! Yay! She's managing to navigate the lines & has managed to transition into a Senior Royal from Head to Toe, Work Ethic & Compassionate, while still having not lost her true authentic self & style! I love how regal & attentive she was during the service. One of my favorite things was seeing her natural, seemingly effortless "Duchess Slant"! :) I can't believe how quickly & rather seamlessly she has acclimated. Plus look at today & it's all quite a far cry from their first walkabouts & engagements with her clinging to Harry's hands! She's has blossomed right before our eyes! After seeing Harry & Meghan standing together & walking up The Abbey, I find I'm more excited than ever for Their Wedding Day at Windsor!! :)

    1. I'm glad Harry let her cling to him, it must have been daunting. But I'm glad to see her becoming more and more confident and now I think she has graduated!! she has done an amazing job with all the pressure from the press and the criticism and sometimes scary threats. I believe this is her last engagement before the wedding! She deserves that time to devote to the wedding.

    2. I hope she gets time to just focus slowly on the wedding and gets to come into it relaxed and fully focused. I am excited about watching history in the making.

    3. She's done an amazing job & each time H&M walk in to some engagement, I almost expect them to hold hands, like they did so sweetly in the beginning.... but while they walk in closely, there is a refined confidence in Meghan that I believe Harry is so proud of & sensitive too. It sometimes looks like he is about to reach for her & then he sees she is fine & they are so lock step with one another! :)

    4. Becca, I'm enjoying the more mature and Royal body language. It keeps the focus where it should be ... on the occasion and not on their relationship.

    5. True RoyalFan. Much more mature. It was refreshing to see that in the midst of their engagement announcement, you know, PDA from the Royals, but I am glad it being properly managed for events such as this.

Season finale of "Suits" airing tonight in the US, with Meghan´s character "Rachel Zane" finally marrying "Mike Ross" (Patrick J. Adams)!!! It´s apparently available on Netflix in the UK tomorrow morning! I wonder whether Harry and Meghan will be watching?.. ;-)))

    1. Don't forget, she had very early call times on set as a working actor. She probably had to get up at 4 am every day -- but could stumble in for hair and makeup and have hours to get ready to shoot, as opposed to looking perfectly turned out by 5 am!

I enjoyed the new trio, too, Becca, with William as the extra. It was lovely to see Harry with his own partner after beint the third wheel for so long!

  43. Many have commented on her "new twists" on the Royal look. I really do not see her doing anything particularly different from other members of the BRF. Sophie certainly shakes things up on a regular basis, Kate has certainly changed things up often in her choices, Beatrice and Eugenie, Princess Ann just almost always has a unique look, etc. Meghan looks fantastic in clothes and wears for the most part gorgeous, expensive and well made items, but still fairly standard attire for the events she is attending. Maybe her shoes and purses? Anyway that is my take.

  44. I've come to believe that for some posters here or on DKB, Meghan or Kate will NEVER get it right. There will always be some little thing that they could have/should have done differently. I wish Charlotte would create a poll for each outfit and cut out the style critiques. Give each of a us vote on the overall outfit and cut out the unrelenting nitpicking on details.

The Telegraph, by the way, had a very nice article today evaluating Meghan's style choices favorably.

    1. I really think it just comes with the territory of a 'comments' section. It would be boring to read through 200 'she looks great' comments, and there are 7 billion people in the world and just as many opinions. I don't think anyone here has anything personal against Meghan, though I do sometimes think comments are unintentionally insensitive and that people aren't aware of their own biases when they're posting (especially about her hair, omggggg).

Here's my complaint: it's about WILLIAM! I wish that as a society it was more acceptable for parents to take leave. I think that by showing up a day after the birth to a work function, it just perpetuates this idea that men and women have to hustle right back to their rightful place: at work. We could close the wage gap if we normalized EVERYONE taking some time off after the birth of a child, so that employers just knew they had to work around it. Please set an example, William!

      Delete
    2. I understand what you mean, Anon 20:51. However, William has been heavily criticized in the past for missing important Commonwealth events, and this one may be close to his heart since he and Kate celebrated Anzac in Australia. I thought he might have taken Harry's place in terms of protocol by showing up, but I also thought he showed a serious commitment by doing so.

      Delete
    3. The "boys" are out again today on Foundation business, hopefully leaving Meghan free to deal with wedding details. I think William may be taking advantage of the time her Mother is with Kate. Once Carole leaves, he may stick closer to home. Of course there are some staff around but no one can reassure and comfort the children better than Mummy and Pa.

      Delete
    4. This may be a duplicate so I apologize...

First, I think that Anzac was too close to Kate's due date for it to be covered by William. And it did give Harry and Meghan the opportunity to represent the queen, which is a good thing.

It's true that William would be criticized if he disappeared. Personally, I see nothing wrong with the way they appear to be prioritizing. And I hope they are taking advantage of Carole's presence as they settle in with Baby Cambridge. Again, all perfectly normal in my book. My goodness, they are lucky to have her! If Diana was alive, I suspect she would be equally willing to help out in any way she could.

    5. I agree, Anon 20:51. What is the point of comments if you don’t have an opinion? The commenters asking why she changed and maybe they don’t like it or maybe they are genuinely asking - who cares? Nobody on here is saying anything racist or classist or mysoginistic or deeply rude - just commenting on the events and her style and what they think of it.

Most of the time I see people who don’t like her outfit going out of their way to say she is still beautiful or they are glad she was there or how happy they are Harry has a partner. I think we need to accept that people can really like Meghan but not always like everything she wears or does or says. I think that’s healthier than blind worship and I like reading in here when people have different opinions than I have and why they think that way. It makes me think and discussion is good.

  47. I’m almost afraid to ask this because I’m afraid this may be taken the wrong way, and I don’t mean any harm, but why is it that some people feel that any comments that are less than glowing of Meghan’s clothing are rude, bashing, etc.? One of the things I’ve always liked about Charlotte’s blogs is that the commenters mostly play nice together even when they disagree on something (and I’ve been a longtime reader of the comments even though I’ve only recently started commenting.) Lately though, it feels like if people aren’t raving about how perfect Meghan is or her clothes, then everyone is branded a naysayer. Sometimes the majority will like an outfit and sometimes they won’t. I’ve followed other fashion blogs, and believe me, the comments on her clothes could be way worse than what we see on here. Yeah, sometimes we will say an event is more important than the fashion - after all I said such a thing myself the other day - but many of us really like clothes and fashion and want to talk about it. Meghan is a stylish woman and clearly cares about what she wears, but we all don’t have to love every outfit and any criticism of an outfit isn’t necessarily criticism of her. I think most people realize she’s in a very unique situation and she’s trying her best to do the right thing, and most of us appreciate her work ethic. It’s just sometimes we may not all like what she’s wearing. I don’t know if all that makes sense or not. My thoughts jumble together.

    1. If you go read the DailyMail comments I think ypu'd understand why some commenters are a wee bit sensitive. Just racist, vile garbage comments over there.

      Delete
    2. Anon23, I understand what you meant. It seemed in the past that there were more people willing to separate opinions about clothes from opinions about the person. Perhaps it is because Meghan is new and people are feeling protective of her. I doubt very much if someone were to say to her "didn't like that sleeveless dress" it would bother her one whit. She is self-confident enough to decide whether she will wear sleeves or not. She has traveled widely, including Europe, she knows what customs are and are not. And she decided for herself what to wear. Fair go. But that doesn't mean that people can't wonder about whether they would wear sleeveless in chilly weather and in a cathedral. Doesn't mean we think any of the less of this remarkable woman.

    3. Ivy Lin,
Hi there. I do read the comments on the Daily Mail. The comments on here aren’t even in the same galaxy as those. The comments there are awful, but I don’t think the comments here are like that.

      Delete
    4. I have to agree with Anon23 and Jo in Arizona. If you are not "fore" then you must be "against". Essentially, if you cannot say anything nice regarding her, then your opinion is automatically sectioned into the "dislike her" category. This for me is akin to a child throwing a tantrum because they didn't want to hear the word no. This can and does make some commentators feel contrite and unwelcome for no justifiable reason. I have now restricted my comments to very little. Do I like Meghan? Not particularly. Am I interested in her clothes? Yes, very much. I have a different insight into fashion from being in the industry for 17 years and therefore my opinion will not always be what others are.

      Delete
    5. I’m with you Ivy Lin. DM is the worst offender certainly but Twitter, Mirror, among others aren’t all that far behind. And it’s one thing to dislike an outfit choice, color or even taste in hats. Everyone has an opinion and a right to express them (or as the less kinder saying goes ‘opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one’ :D). But it’s when those opinions cross the line into attacking her personality that bothers me. Disliking a dress, that’s fine. But when disliking a dress morphs into her being insensitive and being disrespectful of her new position in the RF, I’m like “whaaaaaat???” How do people make that kind of leap? My thing is that Meghan probably has more advice than she knows what to do with. She’s surrounded by advisors and people that want her to succeed. I doubt anyone would advise her to wear something inappropriate. And I doubt she would go against advice. Certainly at this stage where she’s aware of how much scrutiny she’s under and wouldn’t want to take a misstep and become a talking point and take attention away from an important event.

Bottom line: yes it’s fine to not like everything she wears, but there’s a line between that and attacking/questioning her personality/motives.

I personally liked today’s choices. The first hat wasn’t my personal taste but the texture of the black outfit made it perfect IMO. As for the second hat, I’m detecting a pattern LOL. Berets have become her go-to. I wonder if she just likes that style or feels “safe” in them. Aside from baseball caps, beanies, and Havana style hats I don’t think she has much history with the British hat custom. No doubt she’ll expand her repertoire with time.

      Delete
    6. I don’t think the comments on here are bad either. Opinions vary and that is good but they are not even close to the other news comments sections.

    7. Roxana, I couldn't have said that any better.

    8. Anon23, I was beginning to feel exactly the same way - I'm so glad you commented. Just because some people dislike an outfit, or think that one outfit wasn't quite right for the occasion does not mean those people are in any way anti-Meghan, out of touch/behind the times or racist. I like to think everyone on this blog is rooting for Meghan and has her very best interests at heart - otherwise we wouldn't be visiting or commenting at all!

Opinions on outfits are just that, and they are all valid, whether they agree with our own or not. As long as they are expressed politely, negative comments about a particular dress/hat/pair of trousers, especially in these early days when Meghan is still fine-tuning her royal look, do not deserve to be shouted down, with the commenter made to feel like a pariah whose opinion is not valid. For what it's worth, I personally didn't like everything that Princess Diana wore either (I'm sure she would have had her share of similar comments if social media had been around back then), and I don't always like everything that Kate wears, but these three women are still among my icons - I admire all of them hugely. Being a fan doesn't mean you have to think someone (or someone's wardrobe) is perfect in every way.

      Delete
    9. Anon23- I have the same feeling about the comment section, but I also feel it is already starting to relax a bit. In the beginning a lot of people acted as if Meghan is the next Messiah and whoever expressed criticism or uncertainty of her go at her new role was the same as those vile and often racist commentators on other platforms.
I have no idea what kind of a person she really is, so I won’t comment on that or only very vague (same goes for Kate, the children or the rest of the family). But I can definitely comment on her style and I often dislike it. Probably even more because I got to know her as „Rachel Zane“. Now, that were looks and hair I adored. But she is Meghan, who obviously follows a different style.
When I hadn’t seen a good picture from today, I almost loved the look- maybe wished the skirt was about 5cm shorter. It seemed an awkward length- something between midi and maxi. The short sleeves are a bit unusual for her position and the engagement but I don’t find them bothering or disrespectful. After seeing the updated post, I have to say that I hate the fabric. A smooth one would have been nicer in my eyes. The pattern takes away from the silhouette and her. I often find her clothes seem to dominate her and make her drown or fade a bit. This was a beautiful cut but the fabric made me look anywhere but her face. The „something off“ she allegedly used to describe her style, really is off for me and not in a good way.
      C.

    10. Like Becca USA mentioned at some point posters at DKB managed to reach to a place where they just agreed opinions are just that - opinions. Hopefully, we can get to that point on this blog. Let's agree to disagree instead of being caught up in the "competitiveness of being right". We are all trying to express our opinions from what we read, observed and or have been told,no one has spoken to the BRF advisor that I know of- so comments here are not facts nor are they the "absolute".

      Delete
    11. Anon23 thank you for posting that. I’ve been less and less willing to comment because of how sensitive people seem to be if I say I wish I’d seen something different. I still like Meghan even if I dislike the apron dress!

Roxanna, I tend to agree with you but not totally. Clothes do indicate personal traits often. How fitted or relaxed or the colour or covered or showing skin or with a hat etc. do have different meanings. Part of what made Marilyn Monroe’s sexy image is the type of clothes and part of showing your respects is wearing a hat etc. so it is understandable people read personality traits into the clothes. I think you are probably referring to the memorial service day comments from the other day. Let’s not get into it again, but when I think about thdcommenters who grew up in churches where it was disrespectful to have bare shoulders saying that’s what they saw that day, I can understand why.

I really like our discussions on here, everybody. And I hope that the people getting so upset when people have observations of where Meghan could improve, sartorially or otherwise, won’t stop the interesting posts from being posted.

Charlotte, I think you’re doing a great job making sure nothing truly offensive gets through and everybody. I think you’re doing awesome at posting thoughtful and respectful comments.

    12. I can't imagine following the life and style of a person whose personality I don't care about or even don't like but to each their own.Especially because Meghan stated many times she has a voice and finds that more important than being a picture perfect doll.

And please let's not forget how many comments were deleted by the Admin because they were flat out racist and rude and inappropriate. Those thoughts still exist, not here, but out there. It's not that difficult to read between certain lines.

It’s fine to not like every outfit and to critic it. I understand those who are sensitive to comments about her like for me it’s the clingy label I hate. As if Harry isn’t reaching to hold her hand as well. Some couples like to hold hands that doesn’t mean they lack confidence.

    14. I find it hard to believe that MM needs hand holding. I like to think that she and Harry are still in their very affectionate phase. They haven't been together that long and they were apart a lot of the time, so I believe the hand holding is just natural for a new couple.

Ms Markle’s critics never really gave her a “learning curve”, but expected her, over night, to be U.K. POLISHED. Well, she hasn’t done bad at all, and she’ll get even better as she becomes more acclimated to what is expected of her in this totally new role and chapter in her life. 5. Don't like is quite subjective, Monica. I am not a particular fan of the Duchess of Cambridge, but I have paid attention to her as she will be queen one day. Have I been impressed? No, I really haven't. Have I said so? Yes, I certainly have. So there is a reason to pay attention to someone you don't "like", although I don't know if I like Kate or not. I don't know her. But I have paid attention to her actions, which I have found lacking overall.

So i'm paying more attention to Meghan as she starts her new life. So far, Meghan is doing a great job, and I'm happy to see that, and happy to see them so into each other. It's a promising start!

    6. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want it’s not like anyone is forcing you too. I choose to focus on people I like not those I don’t because I feel it’s a waste of time but to each his own. I don’t care if she’s going to be queen 30 years from now that makes not a lick of difference to me over here in the states.

Meghan interest me more because she’s more real to me and relatable than the others. Also the Harry factor he’s always been so easy going, likable and to see him finally find the one, and the one isn’t the usual cookie cutter english rose everyone hoped for made this whole thing even more exciting for me. That made me root for them more.

      Delete
    7. I don't see where I said anyone was forcing me, Monica. You said you didn't understand why someone would follow someone they don't like. I said I wouldn't say I don't like Kate, but I'm not particularly impressed with her so far, yet I pay attention because she'll be queen one day. Some of us are more interested in the monarchy as a whole, rather than each part. Such is the case with me.

I do agree with your assessment of Harry and Meghan though. I think both are very relatable and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they'll do.

I like the way she’s using this first bespoke look to create some simple classic elements whilst adding some suitable twists of her own. The slight nostalgic / 50’s vibe that this brings really suits her. This will be a good classic outfit to draw upon without dating too much if Sophie’s been wearing the blue version since 2014 too!

I really love her work commitment but just hopes she takes some time off now to concentrate and focus on the wedding!

    1. I hadn’t thought before now that maybe some of the components of her outfits I found to be wrong were in fact because she didn’t have access to bespoke pieces. It will be interesting to see how her style changes as she gets more custom outfits made.

  60. Fifties indeed! This outfit is very similar to the one I wore back then to my father’s funeral. It was a sleeveless dress with short jacket, in black corduroy. The jacket buttoned in back, but it had the same collar. A dressmaker had made it for me, and it was quite adaptable. I could wear the dress with a blouse or alone or with the jacket, depending on the occasion.

Meghan looked very elegant for both ANZAC events. I saw Harry glance at her dress for the Stephen Lawrence observance, and thought he would suggest some changes. When I opened this page, I saw that Megan was responsive to all the criticism. This of course was a much more formal event, but still the contrast was striking.

I was so pleasantly surprised when I saw the full length photo. She looked so lovely for such as somber event. We have a new trio! I did enjoy some videos of Wills trying to stay awake during the service. Props to him for coming after such an eventful Monday.

  63. Love this look on Meghan today!

Reading this post made me remember when I got to visit Gallipoli when I was in Turkey in 2005. It was a very moving visit. You can still see the trenches all over the battlefield back from the sea, and on the beach there are still pillboxes you can explore. (If you ever get to go, watch your head in those pillboxes! I didn't notice some pipes above me and smacked my head really hard; had a huge egg for weeks.) There's also a huge graveyard and memorial. Being from the US, I never knew about Gallipoli and the ANZACs until I visited Turkey.

  64. Patricia, she could have just planned to wear the outfits as they wear without necessarily responding to criticism. I do not think Meghan was planning on the same type of outfit to Westminster Abbey as she the one she wore to Stephen Lawrence's memorial. For me there is nothing striking because she wore a formal outfit to the Abby for the Commonwealth, and to the queen's concert. I think Meghan is well-informed by advisors.

  65. 🌸 There were two High Commissioners there. What is a High Commissioner and what do they do? Anyone know? :)

And, Charlotte, love that you mentioned that Meghan is Aunt Meg to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Peter Phillip Lupton MichaelπŸ˜‰. I never thought of that before. And William and Kate will be Uncle and Aunt to Harry and Meghan’s children. And, the Queen will be great-grandmother to Harry and Meghan’s children. So it is only makes sense that Meghan has had tea with her, Christmas at Sandringham, etc.
Like Kate, she is already seamlessly part of the Royal family and the Monarchy. This has all happened so rapidly. Somebody pinch me, lol.

    1. SG - a High Commissioner is the name given to an Ambassador where the appointment is to and from a commonwealth country. The name is different but the role is the same. ie the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana. The Embassy is called the High Commission.

  66. Yes! More like this, Meghan! Love this just like the black suit, white coat, women’s day outfit and queens concert outfits. Very rosy and still unique to her!

  67. Meghan looks fabulous in this outfit, very lovely for such an occasion. I thought that from the bit of the video that i saw in the Abbey, she seemed more intent than William or Harry, but as always I am happy to be corrected 😊😊

On a different note, the fine gold rings she wore to the CHOGM Youth Forum are by an Australian designer- Natalie Fitch. So with one thing and another she is doing Australia proud too - yayπŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί

    1. I read it as Bronwyn-Sydney was expressing that she thought Meghan seemed more engaged. Did I get that right Bronwyn-Sydney? I actually noticed & I think commented on how nice it was to see how regal & engaged Megan seemed to me.

Gosh I'm feeling the drought of any Royal News! Ugh....... I need to focus on how happy I am that I was still home to Welcome The New Royal Prince & participate in The Live Event on DKB! I'm flying off for work on a movie, filming on location in Canada & will be mostly off the grid. Hoping we will wrap in time for me to be home to cuddle up & join you all here for the "Live" coverage of The Royal Wedding! :) Now Everyone play nice & be kind to Charlotte while I'm away!! lol :)

  70. 🌸 yay. I just read in Town and Country magazine where Royal expert, Ingrid Seward editor of Majesty magazine, agrees with me that the Spencer tiara is a contender for Meghan for the wedding at Windsor.
She believes that the Spencer tiara will definitely be made available to Meghan as an option. yay.
That, or a new bespoke tiara (knowing how Meghan likes to change things up), are my choices for Meghan’s wedding tiara. I think her first choice though will definitely, definitely be the Spencer tiara. πŸ‘‘πŸ‘°πŸ»

  71. I have been scanning through the comments and am very conflicted. We all have preferences in our sartorial choices, which come from where we live, how the people around us dress and in my case I freely admit from the pages of Vogue. I have never been a fan of the Duchess of Cambridge’s style, to me she mirrors the Queens fashions only with a shorter hemline and more fitted silhouette, but this is the first (and last) time I have ever posted something even slightly critical of her.
There are a few things I think all followers of Meghan’s style need to accept. She will never voluntarily wear pantyhose/tights, they have not been considered stylish or used by any designer on a runway or by a magazine in a layout in 20 years or more. There will be occasions when she has no choice, but this should not be construed as an indication that she is becoming “more royal”. Yes some women feel they need to cover their legs but many of us don’t and that’s ok.
Her hair styles are modern and current, as she has stated many times she prefers French women’s slightly off look and I doubt she will ever switch to styles that lacquer every hair in place.
And lastly hats, she will have occasions where she has no choice but to wear one, it seems clear from her overall choices so far that she will stick to very simple ones, which fits with her overall style. I cannot picture her in a large garden hat with flowers all over it.
There is no one who will wear something that I would choose 100% of the time, but I enjoy seeing Meghan’s choices, as I imagine is true for many followers of this blog. She looks lovely all of the time and seems well suited to her future role. Maybe just focus on that and stop looking for signs that she is becoming more “royal”.
