Meghan in Chicago, CHOGM Engagements Confirmed, All the Latest Wedding Details & More!

Meghan in Chicago... It looks like Meghan is in Chicago at the moment. A report from the Chicago Tribune reads: "Is Meghan Markle in or around Chicago right now? Looks like it. There’s this photo that apparently shows the Northwestern student-turned-actress-turned-royal-fiancee sporting what looks like a Sox cap landing at O'Hare International Airport, according to a source who provided it to the Tribune. Markle landed at the airport at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a second source, who also said that she will be leaving town early Sunday evening. Chicago police provided physical security for her but not an actual escort, the source said. The U.S. State Department likely would have taken her in agency vehicles to her hotel or wherever she was staying, the source added."

TMZ reports she's there to finalise her application for a UK visa:

'Meghan Markle was back in the States this week to take a major step in becoming a permanent UK citizen ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry.
Eyewitnesses tell us Meghan attempted to be as incognito as possible -- with 4 bodyguards in tow -- when she entered the VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre Thursday in Chicago. We're told she was there to finalize her application for a UK visa.
The whole thing only took about 10 minutes, and the entire office was cleared for her. We're told she was friendly with the staff. As for her disguise -- shades and a White Sox cap to blend in with locals. The Chicago Tribune got a glimpse of her at O'Hare Airport.'

Meghan's Mirror identified Meghan's bag as the Gucci Re(Belle) style. The £1,790 piece is available at Selfridges and in various colours and sizes at Gucci, Farfetch and Bergdorf Goodman.

Meghan's "unprecedented" Commonwealth role... Next week, the Royal family will take centre stage for what is set to be the largest summit ever held in Britain: the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Leaders from all the member countries are expected to gather in London and Windsor for a packed week full of events. They will come together to reaffirm common values, address the shared global challenges faced by all members, and agree how to work to create a better future for all Commonwealth citizens, particularly young people. As previously reported (kudos to terrific royal reporters Camilla Tominey and Roya Nikkhah) Meghan will join Harry for events focusing on young people and women's empowerment.

Kensington Palace confirmed the following:

  • Wednesday 18th April 2018 - Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle will attend a reception with delegates from the Commonwealth Youth Forum at Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre.
  • Thursday 19th April 2018 - Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle will attend a CHOGM Women's Empowerment reception at the Royal Aeronautical Society, London.

Royal reporter Rebecca English described Meghan's participation pre-wedding as "quite unprecedented".

Rebecca English Mail Online Twitter Feed

As we've discussed in recent months, the Commonwealth is going to be an important part of Harry and Meghan's work once married. We also discussed an official role for Prince Harry. I was very excited to see it officially announced today; the Prince will serve as President of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust. This new youth charity, of which Her Majesty is also patron, provides a platform for young change-makers across the Commonwealth in the areas of education, sport, health and the environment. The QCT champions, funds and connects young leaders who are working hard to make a difference in the world. The platform shares their stories, gives them a platform to amplify their ideas and inspire others to join.

More from Roya Nikkah.

A week of Commonwealth events will close with a special concert entitled 'The Queen's Birthday Party' on Saturday 21 April at the Royal Albert Hall. The Queen's Commonwealth Trust is the major beneficiary of the concert, and to cement his new role Prince Harry will make a speech.

More on what to expect on the night:

'As previously announced, BBC One and BBC Radio 2 will broadcast a special concert in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen's 92nd birthday on Saturday 21st April 2018, live from the Royal Albert Hall.
The concert, known as The Queen's Birthday Party, will be attended by Her Majesty and other members of the royal family. The BBC has brought together leading artists from around the Commonwealth, at the end of a week in which the UK has hosted 53 countries for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Alongside contemporary performances, there will be songs from classic musicals. Performers on the night will include Sir Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue, Sting and Shaggy, Shawn Mendes, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Anne-Marie, Craig David and Donel Mangena.'

Will Meghan be there on the night? I asked Hello! royal reporter Emily Nash and she thinks so, as does reporter Roya Nikkhah, who described it as "quite likely".

It's going to be a historic week in Britain; I'm looking forward to seeing it all unfold.

Wedding Updates... During the week, Kensington Palace announced two royal wedding updates. Members of the public from around the United Kingdom have this week learned that they will be amongst the 2,640 people in the grounds of Windsor Castle on 19 May. The Palace said: "Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle have said they wanted their wedding day to be shaped to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations. As previously announced, the couple asked Lord Lieutenants to invite 1,200 people to join the celebrations, including young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities."

These include Reuben Litherland, 14, from Derby. Reuben was born deaf and has started lunchtime lessons to teach sign language at school. He also works to raise the awareness of the Deaf community's need for better access to public services.

Pamela Anomneze, 52, from Haringey. Pamela is the manager of Studio 306 Collective CIC, a social enterprise that helps those recovering from mental health issues through the creative arts.

Philip Gillespie, 30, from Ballymena. Philip, who lost his right leg in an IED incident in Afghanistan, raises funds and awareness for ABF the Soldiers' Charity and has just taken part in Invictus Games UK Team Trials for rowing, swimming and archery.

More from the Express:

'Amelia Thompson said she was "speechless" when she found out she was being invited to Harry and Meghan's marriage next month. A year ago, she was among the crowds when the bomb went off in the foyer at Manchester Arena and suffered trauma as well as damaged vocal cords from screaming at the horror of what she was witnessing.
Since the attack, Amelia and her family have met others affected by the bombing through fundraising efforts, including a photo shoot.
The teenager said she asked her mother, Lisa Newton, whether she would forfeit her chance of going to the wedding in favour of their friend Sharon Goodman, whose 15-year-old granddaughter Olivia Campbell-Hardy was killed in the attack.'

Seven inspirational young people from the Diana Award were also chosen. The Diana Award was set up in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, and her belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better. Young people range from mentees who have been transformed through the Award's mentoring programme, teen campaigners against knife crime, FGM and domestic violence campaigners in London, an Anti-Bullying Ambassador who has spoken out about his experience of homophobic bullying, and a fifteen year old girl from Canada who has handmade thousands of blankets for people receiving cancer treatments and veterans living with PTSD.

No Official Guests to attend the Royal Wedding... In the following press release, Kensington Palace also confirmed there will be no official guests at the royal wedding, including Prime Minister Theresa May:

'It has been decided that an official list of political leaders – both UK and international - is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle's wedding,' says a Kensington Palace spokesman. 'Her Majesty's Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by the Royal Household.”
On foreign royalty attending the wedding, it will depend if they are friends of the couple. Nobody has been invited because of the position they hold.'

How to view the Royal Wedding... Whilst official details have not been announced yet, the Telegraph offered interesting insights into plans to televise the ceremony:

'Yes. The wedding will be televised live on networks around the world. A single pool camera will capture the nuptials so many channels will be able to broadcast it. However, no concrete television plans have been formerly announced yet.
In the UK, the BBC, Sky News and ITV are expected to cover the big day with big-name presenters anchoring the coverage. Broadcasters are also expected to offer live coverage of the day's events on mobile and online.
After the ceremony, there will also be footage of the newlyweds' carriage procession around Windsor. Thousands of people are expected to turn out for the event, lining the route along Castle Hill, High Street, Sheet Street, Kings Road and Albert Road.
It's highly unlikely that we'll catch a glimpse of the two wedding receptions. They are private events for guests only. '

BBC America shared a promo regarding their live coverage. Click here to view it.

Harry and Meghan's Engagement Photographer on a "deliciously in love" couple... It was fun to see an interview with Harry and Meghan's engagement photographer Alex Lubomirski who shared details from taking one of the most famous sets of engagement portraits of our time. He spoke to E! News about securing the commission: '"It was nutty. It was a very surreal end to the year because it came out of nowhere," explained the photographer, who trained with Mario Testino. "I think one of Meghan's friends saw me on Instagram that I was in England during the announcement of the engagement and I was told later that this person said to her, 'You should meet Alexi. He's great. You'd love him' and that was it."'

The photographer revealed he's invited to the wedding:

"It was one of the easiest, most joyful jobs because they were so deliciously in love," the Brit said of his first-time engagement shoot.
He also explained said the two made it easy because of how in love they were. The father of two explains that he told the pair, "Just be yourselves and I will take pictures of you."
Alexi also mentioned that he and his wife have indeed scored invites to the royal wedding, which is on May 19, but admitted he was not asked to photograph the royal wedding.'

Speaking about the controversy surrounding Meghan's Ralph & Russo gown, he added: "To be honest, we tried on a couple of different things and that was just one that she felt comfortable in, so we weren’t really thinking, ‘Is it nude?’ or anything. We just thought, 'Feel comfortable and let’s make some nice pictures."

Meghan's Everlane Tote Restocked... Meghan's much-loved cognac Everlane Day Market Tote is back in stock.

Meghan carried the $165 bag at the Invictus Games in Toronto and it has been highly coveted since.

A Toast for Meghan... In our last post, Bluhare shared a link to a terrific piece by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, two wonderful ladies better known as the talented team behind Go Fug Yourself. I think they are just fantastic. You'll enjoy this piece by them, I promise! This Is The Rehearsal Dinner Toast Meghan Markle Deserves.

  1. Charlotte, what type of wardrobe are you expecting to see Meghan in at these events next week? As always, splendid coverage. Thank you for all you do!

  2. Thanks for these updates! Does anyone know what sorts of engagements Diana did while she was engaged to Charles? Did she do state dinners or any sort of event of this caliber? Good for Meghan, she’ll do great!

    1. Yes, Diana did evening gala engagements and attended a State Dinner as a fiancée.

    3. I don't remember, but one thing that's pretty cool (or wierd, I don't know?) Is that Diana went to Chicago during that last Summer & attended a Fundraiser for Northwestern University (where Meghan attended College)! I will never forget the Gorgeous Purple Dress that Diana wore!! Purple is the School Color for Northwestern!!

Anon at 21:25: I know of two State Dinners she attended while engaged. She attended at least one film premiere (James Bond), Wimbledon, Ascot and the famous event at the Goldsmithhall (to raise funds for the Royal Opera)where she wore "that" black gown with the plunging neckline designed by the Emmanuels (her wedding gown designers). But not an event like the Commonwealth meeting. What we have to bear in mind, though, is that Charles was in Australia for a very long visit during their engagement time (so no official engagements for her during that time), so there might not have been engagements of that caliber back in the UK in between February 1981 and July 1981......

    6. She went tot days of Royal Ascot

    7. I mean this as a genuine question and am not trying to be snarky or critical in any way at all.

Why is attending two receptions beside Prince Harry at the Commonwealth meetings considered so unusually high profile? I would think the state dinner would be considered much more so, and she does not seem to be attending that. I know that Catherine didn’t do such a high profile event as a fiancée, but since William was still with the RAF and not doing many royal duties himself, I don’t know that it is a good comparison. Since Diana DID attend several high profile events as a fiancée, it seems that Meghan’s inclusion, while understandably exciting, is not particularly extraordinary. Unless I am missing something. Which is very possible!😁

    8. Hello T,

It's the largest summit ever held in Britain and it is highly unusual for someone not yet married into the Royal family to be part of an event at this level. We're seeing senior government officials playing a major part across the board.

For example, the women's empowerment reception is being hosted by Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. It's quite amazing to have all 53 nations together. Rebecca English wrote: "Meghan Markle will attend two key events at next week's high profile Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference in what is being seen as a clear indication of her future royal role. It is clear that both he and Miss Markle, 36, who made clear her intention to 'hit the ground running' when it came to her official duties, plan to take a lead in Commonwealth matters."

On a more poignant note, it is very much thought it will be the last time the Queen attends CHOGM - one of the reasons I believe we are seeing such a show of force from the BRF.

A poster mentioned Diana was only 19 when she attended her first State dinner and other important events pre-wedding. I've only really properly learned about her work and legacy in recent years and she was one impressive lady. When one takes away the scandal and tabloid element and just looks at her work for almost two decades, it's incredible.

    10. Eve, I remember so vividly that black ruffle strapless dress & Diana's extreme embarrassment that ensued, after she was so viciously mocked in the press & royal circles! The memory that stands out the most on the flip side, is how gracious & kind Princess Grace of Monaco was to her, during that evening! She helped make Diana laugh amid her tears! She also gave Diana some poignant wisdom.... "It will only get worse". Princess Grace herself, died in 1982!

  5. I have read repeatedly that one of the US shows, I think Good Morning America, is going to air the wedding and will take to the UK as commentators Meghan's half-brother's former wife and her one or two sons. Could it be tackier?

Ad of course half-sister is complaining about all the Markles not invited but she doesn't mention her two daughters, whom I have read are good friends with MM. Hope they are there.

I wish MM would wear something made of some of those terrific patterned fabrics shown at the show that Kate and Sophie went to

    1. Allison, it is not Good Morning America that is bringing Meghan's estranged family members to London, but rather Good Morning Britain.

    2. Allison I haven’t heard anything about GMA but the Today show is going to be in the UK for the wedding and broadcasting live starting Thursday or Friday leading up to the wedding. I hope neither show has hired any of these estranged relayas some sort of experts. I’ll lose all respect for them and will blacklist them and let them know of my displeasure.

The sister whining and complaining about not getting invited is...predictable. The passive aggressiveness comments about how humanitarians wouldn’t forget family or some such thing, I admit the audacity left me a bit breathless. And then saying how the ex friend that sold videos and pictures and stories of Meghan to some tabloid didn’t get an invitation, well gosh what alternate universe is she living in.

She never mentions her daughters so I do hope they do have a relationship with Meghan and that they’ll be invited. It would be so sad if only her mom and mom were there as family :(

Buuuuuut I digress on all that. Thank you Charlotte for the nice update. Looks like next week will be a busy one and I can’t wait to see what happens. How great for Meghan and Prince Harry to be involved with youth and women’s empowerment events for the commonwealth meeting.

As for what she’ll wear, well. I’ve all but given up on having expectations LOL. Meghan has shown she has her own style and will wear whatever and however she wants. But I yearn for some spring colors. Spring is finally coming out to play in my neck of the woods. Maybe her brief stay in the US will inspire her😬. One can hope.

    3. I think it will be gross is any news outlet puts any of these spiteful family members or friends on air. Especially if they refer to them as having the inside scoop on Meghan! I mean doesn't it beg for reason, that if they Were Close to Meghan..... they wouldn't be sitting in a news chair, they'd be sitting in a pew at Windsor!?

    4. Roxanna and Becca, I am praying no one hires any of those “family and friends”’ either! That half sister just won’t hold her tongue, Ninaki Priddy will not stop selling video and photos. Now some former British manager is being passive aggressive telling stories to the Daily Mail. She started talking when she realized no invite was coming! Thank goodness we have Charlotte’s blog to come to. I will be watching the Wedding on Today, GMA and BBC America!!! So excited!!! Kathy from NJ

  10. I love the toast shared by Bluhare. I have often thought how careful royals have to be in public. Meghan could have a concerned look due to a broken fingernail, forgetting to send something to be cleaned, an uncomfortable shoe, a pinched nerve---and then the papers will run with the frown, saying the love is gone or she had a fight with Kate or Camilla. If you do not look deliriously happy, then something must be wrong!

  16. It's Soooo Crazy Knowing Meghan Is Here Somewhere within a 20-40 mile radius of me right at this moment!!!! I wonder if she is visiting any old friends?? I wonder if The Obamas are in town? They still own their house here! This is literally the closest I'll probably ever be to her!! Except of course visiting London. But I'm just giddy!! lol :) So curious what she will be doing until Sunday??

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was interested to learn that there would be no official guests. I can't help but wonder... is this a way of inviting the Obamas, whom Harry is closer to (Invictus Games) but not inviting Trump? If Theresa May herself is not invited then that is a workaround for not extending an official invitation to the embattled American administration? Of course they wouldn't have to be invited anyway, since he's not an heir and this isn't a state occasion. But I've wondered a bit about whether they'd like to invite Obama but don't want an international incident

That toast is amazing - thanks Bluhare and Charlotte!

I grew up watching royal weddings with my mum; Sophie and Edward, Mary and Frederick, even Charles and Camilla. Kate and Wills wedding was my fifth dating anniversary with my now husband, and also the day my grandfather passed away. I drove back to Canberra in tears, desperate for the support of my fiance, and to escape by watching the wedding. Even today, news reports that it is Wills and Kate's anniversary prompt reminders of our anniversary, if bittersweet. I can't wait for a wonderfully happy occasion on the 19th (my husband has promised he will be present with pizza and wine yet again!)

  21. The toast is amazingly spot on.

"Your hair will be too messy, except when it’s too polished. You’ll hold Harry’s hand too much — yet when you stop, you’ll be considered a cold fish. "
    "
Your eloquence will be written off as “actress-y,” but sling slang at your own peril. Being outspoken is “abrasive,” but if you keep quiet, you have no convictions. You will be too American, always, even as you are earning your British citizenship — at which point it will be suggested that you’ve turned your back on the good ole US of A. In short, you can’t win. "

Thèse parts remind me of the critics I read here.

    1. I don't claim to be savy with these things...... but I've had friends & family that have had to travel back to the US to sometimes just stay for a required amount of time, (if they have been living & working abroad for a prolonged period of time) as a condition of their out of country Visa's. Also, I've seen the same thing happen with a friend who married & became a citizen of the UK. There does seem to be a thing about having to travel back to the US & either "touch ground" for a set period of time or to take care of parts of the Visa process actually in person. I'm wondering if she had to go back to the place where her most recent passport was issued. We know that she traveled to England as a teen. But what if her current passport was initially issued when she was in College at Northwestern & she got it in Chicago & she's just been renewing it ever since? Remember I'm not super savvy in these things! I just use a regular passport for travel, & my out of country work visas have been routine & thankfully uneventful! :)

  24. With the upcoming commonwealth events I'm anxious to see Meghan in more business formal wear as opposed to the business casual clothing she has been wearing. These events should give an interesting preview of her more formal future clothing as a full time royal. I suspect that she will want to strike a balance between giving people the sort of polish they expect with her casual confidence way of dressing.

    1. It will be interesting to see what she wears when in the company of the Queen. Kate is usually in Alexander McQueen or other high end tailored outfit. Meghan wore Amanda Wakeley to the Commonwealth Service. I'd look for trends that way - whether in the company of other senior royals (Queen, Charles) or just with Harry and/or William.

  26. Fun to hear about the wedding but I have to say I would not find it at all enjoyable or an honor to be selected to stand outside a wedding in a crowd of strangers for people I do not know or even people I had met a few times. I do not get that part of it at all.

    1. Ali, I am also trying to wrap my head around that. First, I would have to find a way there, and imagine how hard parking would be. Have to get there very early and leave when it's over because hotel rooms will be taken. However, maybe staff will organize collection areas where you can park and take a bus into Windsor. Because I could not see much over the heads of 999 other people, perhaps the wedding will be televised on screens. And there must be munchies and souvenirs and maybe a little champagne to keep me occupied. And music while the luncheon guests are feasting. And I read the invitation arrival is rather Hogswortian (complete with RSVP howlers?), so it would definitely be a cool thing to have.

    2. Sophie and Edward did the same thing, invited 8 000 people via lottery they did not know I understand those people came, why do people line for people that are famous, movie stars, the pope, princess Diana , do they know them personally - no, maybe they just wanna have fun or bask in the celebration of Harry - Diana's son getting married, and Diana was loved by many.

    3. I hate crowds so it wouldn't be for me, but think of it this way, ali: these are people who who do good things by stealth but how lovely that they're getting a little bit of recognition and publicity for their causes - maybe a column in a local newspaper, a minute or two on local radio/tv; then the have the fun of planning the trip; and when they're there it's going to be like a visit to a concert or a sport - you talk to the people next to you, exchange experiences, if you're Brits you talk about the weather etc. Nobody is being forced to go, so I'd bet they all have a great time.

    7. I think the merits of the invitation to stand in the crowd of strangers have now become clear. There are people getting their story told in local papers and television, and in some cases even globally. Meghan and Harry are using their platforms to give other people a voice and recognition. They can use the recognition of the invitation in promoting their charity work and fundraising.

These people inside the grounds when also probably in relative close proximity to hundreds of media members on the wedding day if who have hours of time to fill before the actual wedding. It's possible many will get an additional change to share their story on the wedding day as well. And at the very least they come away with a story to tell. 9. Anon 01:48, Such great insights! I hadn't even thought of all the ways one could parlay one's invite to gain publicity for one's good cause or oneself! If you kept it, it would definitely be a great honor to keep with your resume etc.! Also, while I know some would rather have a root canal than attend in such a way with a crowd...... to other Royal Watchers, this is a basic "Fan Event", just like Any Sports Event or Concert! It's a great day out to cheer on your fav people at an Historic Event! Just think how many people packed London for Will & Kate's Wedding!! They camped out for days & everything!! :)

    10. Consider the crowds that have shown up for royal weddings in London and lined the route between BP and Westminster Abbey or St Paul's Cathedral. How many people would pass on the opportunity to stand in the courtyard of BP or other prime real estate? 😉

It's all decked out & set up for Security Detail & all. Even the street was remodeled with Security Baracades! 2) I will Definitely go outside & put on my "MegoMeter" & see what it finds!! lol :) 3) Oh I'm All about scoping out the local Starbucks if I get a hint of what part of the city she might be in!! lol :) 4) If not at The Obamas, there are so many gorgeous hotels where Presidents, Dignitaries & VIP's routinely stay. So she'd have her pick of great lux places to hunker down. I'm actually tempted to make a trip down to "Michigan Avenue" to walk the "Magnificient Mile", in case she were to want to do a spot of shopping...... would she pop into Hermes? Gucci? Chanel? Burberry? Henri Bendel? Bergdorf Goodman?....... 5) If she's up here by her old Alma Mater, there are Really nice homes & Mansions galore! & 5) I'm thinking that is a very real possibility that people & photographers will be heading to O'hare Airport on Sunday Morning, since they announced that was when she was going to depart! (probably not so smart!) I'll let you know if I experience any "Meghan Magic" this weekend!! lol :) xo

Becca, I agree with what you said also, even if they aren’t in town, the Obamas may have offered to her their home for all the reasons you said. My guess is though her time there will involve important people and important stuff. Like Chicago deep dish pizza, for instance. :)

The truest piece of journalism and it should cause each reader to self examine the “contents of their character” that would or could lead him or her to inflict unkind, offensive judgments on anyone. It is true, in the eyes of the media; in the eyes of some of her family; and to a large segment of public opinion, Ms Markle never wins. What thrills me, tho, is her confident opinion of herself: She is AREADY A WINNER.

  34. Loved 'the toast' ! Truth wrapped in humour :-). The moral of the story, not to judge too harshly, when we never have all the facts. As for Meghan, she has had years of the rough and tumble of Hollywood, which will stand her in good stead for anything negative that comes her way. And if ever she is feeling a little overwhelmed by everything I hope someone tells her about this lovely blog, giving her the chance to pop in,and read all the positive comments :-)
Excited to see Meghan attend the CHOGM events this week. HM must feel re-assured that after her years of service to the Commonwealth, H&M are picking up the mantle and carrying on with her work. There'll be many causes that they feel passionate about and something they can stamp their own personal brand on. Exciting times ahead for them as a couple.

    1. I stumbled onto this piece of information which I found quite alarming. It suggests that Meghan will have to report all manner of things--including jewelry on loan from the Queen--to the IRS.Ouch! She won't be taxed on all of it, merely be required to report it, but what a nightmare. You know how obsessive the bean-counting government bureaucrats are about the most minor infractions.

      https://www.wsj.com/articles/look-out-meghan-markle-the-irs-is-watching-1523611800

    2. What a nightmare. If she isn’t taxed, then what do they care? But then again, this is the IRS, so I shouldn’t be surprised

      Delete
    3. Oh Philly, that sounds like a Nightmare!!! Surely The Royal Family has thought of how to lessen the distress & possible intrusion this could make for Harry & Meghan & The Royal Family. Especially for any children they might have, before she becomes a UK Citizen! I would think this U.S. Tax hassle would lead Meghan to consider giving up her U.S. citizenship! I sure would!!! This could be a mess!! :( #PrincessProblems #DoubleDippingTaxes

      Delete
    4. Philly, what also really freaked me out, is that it said that any children born to her (either before she became a UK citizen - which may take years - or possibly if she still retains her U.S. citizenship/not totally clear about that part) would be considered U.S. Citizens & all their financial details would be accountable to The U.S. I.R.S.!!) Say Whaaaa?????

      Delete
    5. I believe she will have to continue to file US and maybe Canadian tax documents whether she becomes a British citizen and renounces her US citizenship or not. Suits made the 100th episode mark and she will be receiving residual payments from the show, although I believe those may originate in a US company, not a Canadian one. I don't know what the tax rate is in those circumstances. There also may be other US income, although I don't think she was on any other long-running shows; there may be commercials, pension funds and the like.
It is a can of worms but nothing a smart international tax expert can't figure out; especially one with the British government and the Queen's assistance.

I have both a child and a close friend who married people from outside their home countries. One files taxes in both countries while in permanent resident status in the new country-which gives access to NHS and is quite a process. That may be the route Meghan chooses; I doubt she will need NHS, however. ;) The other is native to a Commonwealth country and chose to take citizenship in the new country of residence-another Commonwealth country. Apparently it simplifies things, even when maintaining dual citizenship, I believe.
I don't know what Peter's wife Autumn's status is, but since Canada is a Commonwealth member, it should be simpler than what Meghan faces as a US citizen.

      Ladies, relax....
Meghan has been living "abroad" (Ok, Canada, but still...) as a quite wealthy woman - and as far as we know, has so far not gotten herself into any tax trouble.
The UK and the US have a tax treaty which is designed to avoid "double tax payments". Plus, as in Canada, she will take up permanent residence in the UK which plays an important factor, too. I´ve witnessed a few tricky situations with tax authorities, and believe me, the German tax authorities are RELENTLESS and doubt EVERYTHING you say or do - but there´s nothing a good tax specialist can´t solve. I´m sure Meghan has THE "BEST" tax specialist on hand that the UK has to offer. Don´t forget, there are a LOT of US citizens living in the UK so there are spezialised firms in London (I easily found one online just googling) and elsewhere dealing with such problems.
The whole thing makes nice headlines, though, and thus highlights a subject that is always a difficult one when living abroad.... But there is no doubt whatsoever, it was one of the first things brought up by lawyers when it was first discussed that Meghan might become Harry´s wife. I am 100% sure that all legal "eventualities" were discussed and considered BEFORE Harry even proposed. Especially since Meghan is not a UK citizen (yet). And I can´t imagine, either, that they would have children without their status - legally, financially, etc - being clarified beforehand. Anything else would be negligent to say the least, especially under the circumstances. So, my guess is that Meghan will become a UK citizen quite quickly and/or there is a special agreement between UK and US tax authorities and the RF tax specialists. NO WAY, this can get as complicated as the WSJ report suggests....

      Delete
    7. WSJ is a well-respected news source in the US on the order of The Guardian in the UK. They are by no means a tabloid and do not make a practice of publishing irresponsible or inaccurate information. It is called The Wall Street Journal and they know the financial world there.
I am sure the "suits" who manage the royals' business have considered every angle; but, as Harry reportedly spirited Meghan off to a Botswana getaway early on in the relationship, I imagine Harry may have been thinking with his heart and not exactly planning ahead.
The world needs a good romance to brighten the news and dilute the constant flow of horrible news. I am on Team H&M for that reason and sincerely hope there will be a (mostly) happily ever after for them (and us) Meanwhile, the Mom in me worries for both of them. But then, Harry has proven he has more depth than we first saw and is capable of seeing this through. Meghan...well, we've seen her potential and she is marrying a Prince, isn't she?

      Delete
    8. Eve from Germany17 April 2018 at 08:04

Anon at 17:20: I didn´t mean to discredit the Wall Street Journal - I agree it is very well respected - BUT, the way the article was written, the headline and "subtitles" - it was clearly not "all WSJ-serious", because it was written in a different tone. Why? Because the Wall Street Journal normally would NOT write about "anything Royal". So I´m quite sure the points they raised are valid - and would have to "alarm" any of us "normal" citizens of this planet - but definitely NOT the British Royal Family - or else I would sack my lawyers AND my tax specialists ASAP, if I was Harry (and Meghan for that matter. I do not believe for one second, that she hasn´t got a tax specialist who would know about her plans to move to the UK for good and advise her accordingly). So while I agree there ARE issues - I also am confident they are DEALT WITH.
Harry might be a "hot-head", but he loves Meghan and doesn´t want her to get into ANY kind of trouble. So I´m sure he will get out of his way in order to ensure everything is going smoothly. And with all the things you have to deal with as a Royal - there are perks, too. One of those is being able to get the best law and tax firms working for you. That´s why I´m not worried about this....

      Delete
    9. Eve, do you think it was satire? Tongue-in-cheek? Taking the tax issue and running with it--You are correct-WSJ isn't the forum of choice for royal news. A financial slant had to be found.

Anon at 23.43: I didn´t want to "utter the word" (LOL), but it somehow sounded a little bit like a satire, but probably making a point while doing so!! Apparently it really IS a nightmare for US-citizens abroad, this tax business - not that the German tax authorities are any different...

  36. 🌸. And, if she doesn’t get citizenship or is in the process, but is married to Harry she will have to report his income and complete financial status. The Queen is the only one who can honestly and totally get a team together to get the big things and the nuances all worked out about that. There is no way that the Monarchy is going to pay the U.S. taxes like that OR give them an inroad to the Monarchy’s complete financial status. 39. SG, there is a US filing status, "married filing singly," I believe. However, she would currently be responsible for 2017 taxes and she was not married then. She should have things organized by the time 2018 taxes are due. Since her Suits employment also ended before 2018--good luck there! she may not have income to declare, other than residuals. 43. 🌸 No one has mentioned the purse. Seen by itself it might seem a little imposing but seen on the body it looks much better. A perfect fit under the arm and against the body. A perfect travel bag to carry on and have everything at hand. Yet it doesn’t look like a carry on. It looks much better.
Am I the only one wondering if we will get to see her bags, coats, etc. a second or third time or more?
I truly hope she does some repeats. A new bag, etc. for every outing for the next decades would require a palace of their own for storage, yeh?
Or, maybe she will accumulate some (as she already has), and auction them for charity so as to perhaps better fit into her image as a humanitarian, (not an Imelda Marcos), and share the designer wealth, lol. Those bags and coats, etc. are too pretty to just sit in a closet somewhere for years and years, gathering dust after only one wearing.
After all, even the Queen recycles. Maybe she could contribute them to a charity that provides professional wear for women from disadvantaged circumstances. That would be cool, although auctioning them for that charity and giving the money to the charity might be more beneficial. Lots of options.
Does anyone think she will start to recycle/auction her investment pieces or will they just sit, lonely, gathering dust in some closet somewhere. (That is really a sad thought, isn’t it, lol.) 👜👠👗👡👢👒

I thought: Why not wear something new (and thus help designers/brands/"the economy") and auction the clothes for charities afterwards? Seemed to me like a true "win-win situation", right? ;-)))

That seems really silly to me.

    5. Eve from Germany17 April 2018 at 19:04

Surfer girl, don´t worry!! No "stealing thunder", lol!!! I just couldn´t help saying it because it´s something that has been on my mind for a long time (ok, I admit, since I read Andrew Morton´s biography of William and Kate and he talked about Diana auctioning her clothes thanks to William suggesting it. So, it´s not really my idea either, LOL, but William´s - albeit Diana wanted primarily to get rid of her "royal past" - that´s of course not the reason our dear Royal ladies would want to auction their clothes, LOL! At least I should hope so!!). It just struck me as "killing several birds with one stone", so to speak!!
So I gladly support your suggestion that all Royal Ladies could do this (ahem, uhm, I might also agree on our Dearest Princess Royal, though - she´s the Princess Royal, so a little bit like the Queen - "not eligible for clothes auctioning for "obvious" reasons" - ahem, can somebody please help me out here with a good reason, LOL?!!!) ;-)))))

    2. Difference is that Charles will be king and he wants his sons to be in the forefront. I do feel that he has been a good father and considers Harry to be more than a spare. I feel like the brothers are equal---they just have different assigned jobs.

"Cor blimey", Meghan´s calendar is filling up like CRAZY during the rest of the month of April!! Wow! Not that I´m saying that this is impossible to do, but, still, Kudos to her!! I mean, it´s not as if she´s got nothing else to do with her time, 5 1/2 weeks before her wedding...... ;-)))
