Five Days To Go: Harry and Meghan's First Post-Wedding Engagement & Where They Will Stay the Night Before the Wedding!

First Post-Wedding Engagement Revealed... With five days to go, wedding updates are coming thick and fast! The first today was news confirming Harry and Meghan's first official engagement which will take place just three days after the royal wedding. On Tuesday, 22 May, the couple (by then the Duke and Duchess) will join Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall for The Prince of Wales' 70th Birthday Patronage Celebration in the Gardens of Buckingham Palace. The event will celebrate The Prince of Wales' patronages and military affiliations. A number of guests from the police, fire and ambulance, mountain rescue and first responders after the bombing at the Manchester Arena will be present.

It's a lovely choice for their first engagement as a married couple and a touching show of support for Charles. It will be an additional treat for the 600 guests to meet the newlyweds. I'm very much looking forward to this one! The day will mark the first of many garden parties for Meghan, we can expect to see her in a summery dress and hat.

More from The Telegraph:

'The May 22nd event will see representatives of each of the charities he is patron of, as well as the military regiments he is affiliated with, visit the palace grounds for entertainment and speeches, as well as the customary garden party tea.Invitations have already been sent to some guests, with key charities tasked with selecting their lucky chosen few to attend.
It is understood to have been the first choice of the Prince who wanted to use the garden reception to thank his charities and patronages for their work over the years. A palace insider said: "He wasn't comfortable with a big event that was just about him. He felt like this would be a much better option."
It is the start of birthday celebrations which is likely to involve a private party for family and friends around the actual date of November 14, and a new official portrait. The Prince is patron or president of more than 400 organisations, focusing on topics ranging from the environment to youth opportunity, food sustainability, architecture and faith.'
Where Harry and Meghan Will Stay the Night Before the Wedding... The Palace revealed the locations where Harry and Meghan will spend their last night before becoming husband and wife. On Friday evening, Meghan will travel with her mother Doria to the Cliveden House Hotel, on the National Trust's Cliveden Estate in Windsor.

Cliveden House is a privately owned 5 Red Star award-winning hotel. Sprawling out beyond the country estate lies 376 acres of magnificent Grade I listed formal gardens and woodlands. Standing majestically upon the chalk cliffs which lend the house its name, the house commands panoramic views over the Berkshire countryside.

Owned, managed and lovingly cared for by the National Trust, the gardens feature the celebrated Parterre, season-long floral displays, distinctive topiary and a collection of exceptional sculptures.

Built in 1666 by the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, as a gift to his mistress, Cliveden House has remained a pinnacle of intrigue and glamour for the elite. Enriched with antique furniture and period features, it has stayed true to its roots whilst also providing a luxurious setting to rest, meet and play.

Cliveden provided the backdrop for one of Britain's most scandalous affairs - the Profumo Affair:

'With a history of unapologetic debauchery, our Grade I listed stately home's most heinous of scandals shook the British parliament and played out on these very grounds.
The year was 1961. While the Cold War was slowly chilling British politics, Cliveden House was engulfed in a sultry summer of sweltering heat. Cooling off in the now famous outdoor pool, was Christine Keeler, a nineteen year old mistress of a suspected Russian spy.
Attending a hot mid summer's party hosted by the then owner Lord Astor, the young woman was one of a few exclusive guests enjoying the luxurious celebrations held within Cliveden House's magnificent gardens. Also in attendance was John Profumo, an up-and-coming Conservative Secretary of State for War and husband of well-known actress, Valerie Hobson.
Profumo and Keeler embarked on an illicit affair following their chance meeting at Cliveden House; an affair which was to force his resignation, irrevocably damage the Prime Minister's reputation, and impact on the course of British politics forever.'
All of the Deluxe Suites are newly refurbished in a traditional, classic style. Luxurious and generously proportioned, the suites feature high ceilings, are decorated with antiques and original works of art and offer very spacious lounge areas. Suite names include 'The Prince of Wales', 'Buckingham' and 'Windsor'.

Meghan and Doria will no doubt enjoy a splendid evening at Cliveden.

A 30 minute drive away, Prince Harry will spend the night at the Dorchester Collection's Coworth Park with Best Man Prince William.

More from People: "Harry’s hotel, Coworth Park, is one of England’s most iconic 5-star country house hotels. The luxury retreat is set on 240 acres of picturesque Berkshire parkland. The estate features an eco-luxury spa with an indoor pool and three restaurants. The rooms have stunning views of the lime grove, meadows and polo fields."

Coworth Park is a much loved polo venue for Prince Harry and this time last year, Meghan cheered him on as he participated in the Audi Polo Challenge. Meghan was joined by Harry's dear friend Mark Dyer, often described as one of the most influential figures in his life. Meghan was chic in a navy Antonio Berardi dress on the day.

It's going to be a very exciting night for both of them!

A Sneak Peek Inside the Windsor Kitchens... And if today's news wasn't enough, the Palace shared a peek inside the kitchens as preparations get underway to serve 600 guests on Saturday. All the staff are delighted to be involved on the day. 'We've even had old staff contacting us if we need some extra support,' says Mark, The Head Chef of The Royal Household.

The menu which will be served on Prince Harry and Ms. Markle's wedding day, has been led by the freshest produce available. 'Luckily the seasons have just fallen perfectly and that's become the main focus in the decision making of the menus,' said Mark. 'The couple have been very involved in every detail of it', he says. Harry and Meghan attended several tasting trials held in the Windsor Castle kitchen in March, sampling each of the dishes made from scratch in the castle's kitchen.

Mark said much of the produce used in the dishes, that will serve up to the 600 guests attending the reception, will be delivered from farms across counties like Kent, which is known as the 'garden' of England and Norfolk. The asparagus being prepared for the lunchtime reception at The Royal Windsor Horse Show came from Portwood Farm in Attleborough in the county.  However, Mark says the produce has also been taken from Her Majesty's Estate at Windsor.

Pastry Chef Selwyn Stoby, who will be working on the day of the wedding, revealed how he prepares chocolate truffles – a favourite dessert served at receptions throughout the year at Windsor Castle. You approach every Royal event with the same care and attention to detail', says chef Stoby. 'But you don’t get many opportunities to do a Royal Wedding in your lifetime, so this is very special.'

More on the menu from People:

'It won’t be a big sit-down lunch for the 600 lucky guests attending the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday.
Their friends and family will be served bowls of food and canapΓ©s — all prepared with classic seasonal produce, drawn largely from Queen Elizabeth’s royal estates.
The sweet and savoury welcome nibbles are made to be consumed in two bites, while the bowl dishes are designed so they can be eaten standing up.
This will ensure that Harry, 33, and Meghan, 36 — who will arrive at the party after their carriage ride through Windsor — can get around to talk to as many of their guests as possible.'

You can view a brief chat with chef Mark Flanagan below.

It's certainly getting close now :)

  1. What a wonderful day the wedding will be...so nice to have a behind the scenes peek at some of the hard work making it possible. The garden party will be a perfect first outing for the newlyweds. Lucky people who scored invitations to that one!

  2. A truly sumptuous post, thank you so much!! Your pictures of Clivedon and Cowarth Park are terrific, a feast for the eyes. And the sight of all those chocolate truffles is making my mouth water! This is so much fun in the run-up to the Big Day, appreciated.

  4. Becca, I'm going to catch you here to answer your question. What I did (instead of working) is Google "Meghan Markle's father" and lots of eager sites appeared, ready to exclaim what a shameful act he committed. Or acts. There are photos of him in an Internet cafe with pictures of MM on the scree, photo of a young Mexican boy holding a tape measure around senior Markle, and a few others. Supposedly he also drove to Doria's house and left a large pot of blue and white flowers---that seemed legitimate but who knows? Half-sister taking credit is odd---and she says it's not for the money but she doesn't say that he didn't receive money. I think he is just the weaker link in the family of three.

Ad I am one of those guests who goes crazy over treats---I would be following around whoever serves those chocolate truffles, grabbing them and stuffing them into a bag and making a fool of myself.

And wonder where Mr Markle gets to spent the night before the wedding? With Guy the beagle?

  5. I don't like the fact that they are staying in a commercial hotel.

    1. I do believe it is very much the norm to stay at a hotel when having a destination wedding. Kate and her family stayed in town prior to her wedding if you will recall. The ideal is the ability to dress in your own home and leave from there but considering the destination and venue that is not always the choice today. Considering that H&M are spending their wedding night at Windsor they would not choose that for the evening before. It is the custom in the US to have rehearsal dinners the evening before the wedding. Actually, a really fun party for the wedding party and out of town visitors. It gives families a chance to mingle before the main event. I wonder if that is done in the UK? Perhaps that will be done when Meghan's parents are introduced to Harry's family. Considering the out of town guests that will be attending I am sure both hotels that H&M are staying at will be filled with friends they know who will be attending all he events of the day and require some down time and change in attire. I think it is going to be a real PARTY.

  6. 🌸 Ha. It wasn’t Frogmore House at all, lol. Just shows how plebeian Surfer Girl is. πŸ˜‰
I had no idea these two hotels existed. wow. The opulence. The scope of Royal wealth and influence can be overwhelming when taking the broad view. wow wow

I did look up the menus for the two Royal hotels (typical Surfer Girl) and found I didn’t know what some of the main menu items even were. The children’s menu, on the other hand, totally appealed to me.
I like hearing what Mark Flanagan has to say. Obviously cooks and chefs are some of this foodie’s favorite people.

And just imagine the fine and rare wines that will be released from the vast and ancient Royal wine cellars to be paired expertly with the equisite cuisine. wow wow Once in a lifetime pairings. Meghan will be in 7th heaven.

I wonder if Thomas, Sr. is staying with the boys or with Doria and Meghan?

  7. It’s the final countdown! So exciting. Their first post wedding engagement is perfect. Supporting PC and the event will surely receive more attention than it might’ve otherwise.

I saw something on twitter that BBC1 had something today about the menu for the wedding? Those truffles look delicious btw.

And those hotels?? Wow. I’d love 1 night at either. Ok. Crazy theory: could H&M get the titles of Buckingham? Is that too much a stretch??

    1. 🌸 Is there such a title, Roxana? 😊
I don’t know and will hesitate to guess at anything Royal anymore as their choices of Clivedon and Cowarth Park revealed to me my minuscule knowledge and perspective of Royal wealth, affluence and options available to the Royal family.
uh, Harry. You are right. Monarchy is a “big deal”.
      Huge. Humongous even. Huge.

      Delete
    2. Hi SG:) Yes, there is such a title. Actually one of the people Henry VIII had beheaded was The Duke of Buckingham (he was a Plantagenet relative). If I remember correctly, the original building that existed before the expansion into Buckingham Palace, was called "Buckingham House" & I believe it was sitting on land owned by Buckingham Family. I believe it was then gifted to The Crown. Then of course it was expanded into more of a Palace & Queen Victoria was the first Monarch who chose to live there. Please, anyone jump in if I've recalled any of the details incorrectly. I'd also have to double check, but I don't believe there is anyone currently holding the Buckingham Title??

    3. I know what you mean, SG, it's staggering to see the wealth of options available to them. What gorgeous places!

  8. Just read a story that Meghan’s father is not coming to the wedding now because of a heart attack he had a week ago and he doesn’t want to embarrass her because of the photo scandal. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but what a mess. I fee so bad for Meghan.

    1. I haven't heard or read anything about a heart attack, while I'm deep into trying to get caught up.... but CNN did send out an alert saying that it was exposed that Mr. Markle did set the photo stuff up with the Paps, with help from his daughter Samantha!! (eyeroll)! They are reporting that he has offered to not attend the wedding! I mean geeze!!! This Family!! (double eyeroll & misty eyed for Meghan) :(

  9. Horrible Twitter info coming out that the father is so shamed that he won't appear in the wedding and reports that he had a heart attack, which may be an excuse. I am so mad; did the press and the sister push him to do this to humiliate Meghan? I hope she is getting lots of love from Harry and her mom and her friends and Kate and will get through this. Maybe this is not true. Maybe after the wedding, the sister will just fade away. I just hope I'm more upset than she is. :)

    1. I know, I cannot imagine what Meghan is going through. It must be awful to have family (even though you may not consider them family anymore since you have not spoken to them in years) turn against you and sell you out like the Markles are doing. I too hope that everyone in London is supporting Meghan. This may sound awful, but I really do not want her dad to walk her down the aisle. He may say that it was a mistake but come on. The Middletons didn`t (and would never do) anything like this. These stunts just make him look stupid.

    2. It sure does seem that this Samantha couldn't resist pounding the last possible nails into the coffin, as she continues her efforts to ruin as much as possible of Meghan's Wedding Day that will be watched Worldwide!! I mean, whatever is the truth, this Samantha has completely inserted herself & taken over the narrative! So she's sucking whatever oxygen she can away from Meghan's lovely Wedding & Coverage! Who needs this happening Ever, especially just days before a Royal Wedding! I'm sure Harry is being her rock!! This makes me so happy that she is marrying into a Family that clearly appreciates her, despite their own imperfections!

    3. Also...... Who can Ever blame Meghan for being cautious about who she lets close to her?? Have we not seen enough of her "friends" & "family" that Any of us would Cut Loose??? I hope this puts all those nasty stories aside that Meghan was someone who just cut people loose for no good reason!! She was burned early & often in life & it appears it's continued all the way up to today!! I know I would definitely have issues trusting people & if I ever sensed someone was using me or that I couldn't trust them...... I wouldn't definitely walk away from those toxic relationships, even if it made me look cold! It's amazing that she's remained so poised, empathetic & giving.... with all that she's suffered through & in the public eye to boot!! I mean Wow!!!!

    4. Personally, I hope we see her walking herself down the aisle to Harry, as the strong, poised, graceful woman that she is, with her head held high!!

    5. My father passed away right before my wedding. So, my husband met me at the back of the church and we walked down the aisle together. It was lovely and I was proud that I wasn't "given away". So lots of options out there.

  10. I just read that Meghan's dad will no longer be attending his daughter's wedding after the staged photo fall out. I can't say that I'm too surprised and I was hoping that her mother would end up walking her down the aisle but gosh this nightmare just makes my heart bleed for Meghan. I really don't have much more to add except that my thoughts and prayers will be with Meghan and Harry on their big day and I'm sure there will be so many others joining me in wishing them the very best and the happiest of days!

It would really be a wonderful act of contrition if the relevant news media withdrew their commentary offers to members of the Markle family who have meddled so much in the whole situation. They surely can't just go ahead and promote further harm?

      Delete
    7. There's been confirmation he didn't receive any medical treatment (TMZ is often right but not really a reliable news outlet); his behavior after his alleged "chest pains" hasn't been that of a recently hospitalized man, other than he was buying antacids. Probably heartburn from his appalling diet. "Popping Valium" seems more like someone who suffers from anxiety self-treating.
I feel sorry for him, but he's being manipulated by Samantha Grant for her own purposes. Evidently Meghan finally reached him and asked him to attend. Let's hope whatever is best for her future happiness occurs.

  12. What a lovely write up - I really feel like I can visualize this, without feeling invasive. What an incredibly special event this will be - all weddings are special - but truly this just feels to this observer also like an opportunity to "heal many many hurts and wrongs" in this particular family. I have been no fan of Camilla, and will probably never forgive Charles, but I truly hope and wish they can come together and be Family for this event - Godspeed to Harry and Meghan both - and much love and happiness. 2. Or a late visit to Louis? He reportedly visited from Scotland on Charlotte's birthday, but I saw no helicopter landings at KP then and the media were covering KP 24/7 at that time.
It would be nice if they were there for H&M, though. Charles has been extremely supportive of Harry.
Lots of royals at KP estate. Perhaps one of the older ones is ill? It could be a lot of possible reasons- but I am hoping for Harry and Meghan support.
I am not assuming anything when it comes to C&C, however.

    1. Yeah, Samantha looked pretty smug this morning telling British tele that she was the "culprit" behind the idea for these photos. She seems pretty proud that she's been able to upset and disappoint Meghan in this way. But I have to wonder why Meghan's father thought for one minute that this would be a good idea. I mean hasn't he read all the horrible things Samantha has said about Meghan, doesn't he even know his daughters?

      Delete
    2. 🌸 his heart attack was the culprit. ⛑
I don’t think the photos would have kept he and Meghan apart.
Do I think that that was Samantha’s intent with the photos? To keep him from The Day? You bet your bippy I do.
Do I personally think the photos turned out to be all that harmful? No.
Do I hope Thomas lives to see his grandchildren from Harry and Meghan and live even longer? For sure.
Will Meghan get things straightened out with her Daddy? I believe she will make it a point to do that knowing that time may be precious concerning him.
Will she try to reconcile with her half-siblings? Nope. That would be a fool’s folly at this point.
Meghan needs to continue to give them no response and a wide distance between them and her.
Meghan reportedly helped her mom prosper by paying for her Master’s degree from USC or at least helping with that. I think she will help her dad also in a way that cannot be invaded by her half-siblings (or anyone else).
Meghan will do the right thing. For sure.

Clivedon and Cowarth look beautiful. I’d like to ask as a curious American and please know I mean it in a respectful way: is there a reason that Prince Harry is not staying at Windsor Castle? Wouldn’t that make it easier ? I’m sure it was all thought out, but it seems odd that a whole castle isn’t being used. I love to see these preparation posts and royal kitchen updates. I still picture the Prince of Wales as a younger man and was chucking at my own surprise that he will be 70 years old. Thank you for the updates Charlotte, I feel like a goofy teenager waiting and enjoying each post. Please look after your health this week.

    1. I feel bad for the whole family. Some families have messy dynamics and it looks like they do too. No matter the state of their relationship, it must be incredibly disappointing for both Meghan and her father that he can't be there. Nobody is perfect and in trying to manage this situation it looks like it has given the "reporting" outlets something else to attach with. Lots of people in the public eye plan "candid" photos and I'm so sad that he felt he needed to and then that was attacked for it. And, of course, sad for Meghan.

    7. It's hard to know what went down exactly. It has to be said that Mr Markle seems to have been supported tremendously by KP, who advised him and did their utmost to protect him from the media. However, he made fools of them by doing what he did and while they continue to ask the media to leave him alone, you can't really demand privacy anymore after you got yourself out there in that way. Before they could say: it's not him, it's his daughter that's of public interest. But now he has put himself out there. There's also reports that Doria will appear on Oprah. VERY BAD IDEA!
Back to Thomas: who knows why he did it. Maybe it really was because his other daughter told him to. Either way, he doesn't look to be in good health and the BRF has had tons of scandals. They just had one a couple of weeks ago concerning Lady Gabriella Windsor. But what the BRF knows and the Markles don't is that you deal with most of those by not saying anything and soon, there'll be no articles written about it anymore. If you do respond, however, it only generates more articles, as seen today.
Unless he was disinvited by Meghan, I think he should still go. But there's something weird about the whole thing anyhow because apparently he only got invited last minute (therefore all those reports saying he hadn't received an invitation) and even now didn't have a plane ticket yet (wouldn't Meghan make sure he got one if she wanted him there?)

    8. 🌸 Allison. :) If we are going to believe any of the TMZ article we might as well believe it all, yeh?

    12. It does seem an “acceptable” reason to miss. A gentler way of him not being there after they said he would. It’s easier to point to health than say he was disinvited or that he chooses not to come to protect his daughter from more scandals. This makes me very sad for all of them.

Anon 21:49....I remember well in the 90's it was talked about a lot that Diana would cooperate with the press and one of the things she would do is tip them off to locations she would be at so photos would be taken, to show herself in a good light. For example, rumors would surface that Diana felt this way or that way about something or that she did something, supposedly the source would be certain friends. Then she would tip off the press (although not herself, through others) that she would be with these particular friends, so then photos would be published of herself with these people and this would be her way of confirming the friendships and that what they were saying about her were true. Also the big one that I thought was very common knowledge is when she was dating Dodi Fayed, and wanted to make Hasnat Khan jealous. She tipped off the press that she was on the yacht with Dodi and kissed him on the deck knowing that photos would be taken and published.

  19. It really is just sad. I commented elsewhere that just from the way his life tracked I have wondered about mental health issues over the years. Who ever got him to do the staged photos... Maybe he arranged it but suspect it was a bit of a confused road to get there. It is just a terrible mess all around and just sad. No idea what Meghan's relationship with her Dad is, but it appears to at least had some very solid and good times, I do not get the impression she was ever terribly close to the half siblings, which I would expect just based on the age difference and the fact that they lived with their Mother. and she with hers. I am sure, as in all blended families, there were some group get togethers, but certainly not tons. I really hope it was all his decision, as frankly this is not a big scandal by BRF standards.

  21. I feel bad for Meghan having to deal with all of this so close to the wedding. (Another reason why, as jealous as I am have the luxurious life she'll have, I would never want to marry royalty. I'd rather just be plain rich, than rich and famous!) But I feel bad for Meghan's father too, even if he deliberately planned all of this. Meghan obviously has received a lot of "protection" and "training" from the royal family about how to handle the media, etc. (And Meghan already knew a bit about the media from being an actress.) And Doria has as well. But I wonder if her father has just been left to the wolves, so to speak. The video/pictures aren't harmful in and of themselves, so I think a bit of grace and forgiveness could be given to him. I hope that rumors of his not attending the wedding are false.

  22. This is so sad, The Daily Mail have hounded this man and set him up to fall. He has never publicly hurt anyone. They just wanted to bring him and Meghan down. Can you imagine all this drama 5 days before your wedding, and then imagine getting married to a prince in front of the world. He made a stupid mistake but Harry’s parents have made many mistakes. In the 90’s, Charles and Diana were often in the press for the wrong reasons. This must be a nightmare for everyone involved.

I could be wrong but it seems the Daily Mail have been sitting on this for weeks, since the photos were taken, and waited until now to put out the story. As if they were waiting for confirmation that Thomas would be at the wedding, and doing this now, deliberately to sabotage things. That's reprehensible and cruel.

  23. I agree that this is not a big scandal by BRF standards. But, with that said, it is not what Meghan wanted on the day of her wedding. Her vision and hope was to be given away by her father. It is sad that her Dad was not offered more direction in the lead up over the past several weeks. I am sure it is all very overwhelming for all concerned. Many things can and do go wrong in planning a wedding. And, we as guests don't even notice. It is so unfortunate that if what we are reading is true it is being played out on such a public stage. I am not familiar with Good Morning Britain but there are photos of Meghan's extended family who are not attending the wedding arriving in London to appear on the show. I would like to think this would not be the case on American morning TV if the situation were reverse. I pray that Meghan will put behind her any unexpected turn of events knowing she is walking down the isle to the love of her life who will protect her always.

  24. I'm trying to imagine my humble (late) father in the scenario into which Mr. Markle has been thrust. There's no way either of them could prepare for the stark contrast on so very many levels between royal spheres and his own. Having put myself in that frame of mind, I have a great deal of empathy and compassion for the man. He did not ask for the spotlight. Now he is caught like a deer in the headlights.

Some of the photos look suspiciously contrived. Might they have been photo-shopped in order to embarrass as many people as possible? Then again, if sums of money were offered, would it be hard to resist something that may have been pitched as harmless by a devious, manipulative reporter? How much could it hurt to allow photos of him looking at a computer or walking down a road or having his measurements taken?

People/families are messy--royal people/families included. Harry himself has done a number of dumb-ass things which make Mr. Markle's actions (or poses--whichever they may be) utterly innocuous. What is wrong is the malevolent and sneering spin put on them in the press. It's as wrong as the "wisteria sisters" and "doors to manual" business against the Middletons.

Harry has done much to try to protect Meghan (and much of it successfully). Much more than his father ever did for Diana or even for Camilla for that matter. But for all his success, Harry cannot and never will be able to cover all the variables. Let's hope that Mr. Markle comes to no harm. Let's hope that that Harry and Meghan can continue to shut out the "noise" and that this turn of events does not taint their day.

Someone said he has tax issues. Maybe he can’t be extradited from Mexico but could be from Great Britain.
Maybe he had Meghan’s okay on the photos, regardless of “Slamming Sam” says.
We just don’t know. And, for all we know he could be on his way to England now.
And, to give some credit to a man who obviously worked very hard to support his family all his working days, I have tried to figure out why as much effort wasn’t made to meet Thomas as was made to meet all of Harry’s family? Why? A private jet to Rosarita and a discreet but warm visit with Thomas, Sr. would be no problem for Harry and Meghan. Meghan apparently took a private jet to meet Harry for that wedding in Jamaica. So I just don’t get it. Why no visit?

    3. I was thinking I wouldn't say anything about this but as someone who has followed the RF closely for the past 50-odd years, it seems odd not to comment on the issue with MM's father. I agree with you, Philly. My sympathies are with that poor man; it has always sounded to me as if he has some kind of psychological condition. I have also wondered whether Meghan (with or without Harry) has flown out to see him since the engagement was announced? If she hasn't, I wonder if the reason was that she didn't want to expose her dad's condition and so felt the best thing was to keep their communications private (maybe FaceTime if he has Internet or maybe just phone calls if he doesn't?) And she was between a rock and a hard place. If she didn't extend an invitation for him to participate in the wedding she might have looked hard hearted and uncaring (like her family has tried to paint her.) She left the details as late as she could leave them but it looks like it still couldn't be done. And someone got to him (the evil half sister) and messed things up anyway. Poor man. Poor Meghan. I hope that her day is wonderful nevertheless.

    4. Agree with every word, Philly. This is so so sad for everyone involved, and I feel deeply for Mr. Markle as well. I thought of my father too. He would have been a fish out of water in such a situation and completely unable to handle the media attention etc. What a horrible chain of events that Mr. Markle could not have foreseen. All in all a harmless bunch of silly photos. Far worse photos of the royal family in far worse situations have been published over the years.

Just a side note- but why on earth hasn't Mr. Markle been in London for the past week or so? Wouldn't there have been suit fittings etc necessary prior to the wedding?

      Delete
    5. I just don't understand her father or this situation. Who does that to a child? Why would anyone exploit his/her child in any way and particularly on such a global stage? Why have her brother's ex-wife and sons arrived in London today? Are they here to further exploit her? Were they invited to the wedding? I'm lost for words. They're all creating a carnival out of her wedding, almost as if they really want to embarrass her more everyday. Her brother and sister seem to be consumed with jealousy and are so intent on hurting her because she made something of her life, while their lives are out of control. I can't imagine the humiliation she's experiencing now. I suspect there's a lot we don't know about her family, but I can only hope she'll be able to get through this week with all the love and support of Harry, her friends and those who really care about her. Now we can see why she has separated herself from them and moved on with her life. I hope her Mom won't let her down, but right now I don't know what to think. I should really stop now too...

I do not wish to speak falsely or out of line but purely out of concern....I've often wondered if Mr. Markle struggles with anxiety & mental health. I have a family member who suffers from panic attacks at even the suggestion of anyone visiting or socializing....especially in an environment with people so unfamiliar. Perhaps that's why Meghan & Harry haven't met up with Mr. Markle leading up to their wedding. Again, I hate to speculate.....at the same time, I'm so sad this has to happen right before Meghan's big day, a day which should be bright & joyful.

    4. It is just so tricky because none of us know the truth about any of what has transpired over the last year with either her Dad or even her Mother. Sinead your idea sounds lovely and wise but maybe he just said no to everything offered for his own reasons, or maybe he and Meghan had not been very close the last few years and they were working on it, who knows but regardless the rest of the family and tabloids helped to really muddy everything badly.

    5. I agree that he should have been in the UK from at least three weeks ago so that he could have got into a comfortable routine, familiarized himself with the lay of the land, got his outfit together, and dealt with some of the other minor procedures. Then all he would have needed to do this week is meet the family and go to the rehearsals. Arriving a few days before this high profile wedding, particularly if he is plagued by any health issues, was always going to be rushed and stressful. Maybe he was also hoping to travel over with Doria, who is perhaps already more familiar with the place/plans and can more quickly get situated. I'm thinking Meghan may have been coaxing him to come earlier, but it's very possible that he has some anxiety issues and was never ever planning to attend and walk her down the aisle.

Poor Meghan will need all he really mental strength to overcome that , with Harry’s help, who knows quite a lot about difficult’situations Himself ....

    1. Agreed, Allison!! I've had a hunch & with this latest news playing out I think it even more. I believe the reason that H&M did not have a proper meet & greet with her Dad is for just these exact reasons. I think he is not entirely mentally well, I see him as a bit of a loose canon.... & look how Doria has been harassed? Imagine if they were to have visited him or had him over to London? My hunch is that for a variety of reasons, it was or would have been just too much for him. I think the reason that his attendance has been so up in the air, is because of his weakness & unpredictability. He appears to be a man with questionable judgement. As much as someone may love their parents..... they also know their limitations too. Just my take on things. My heart is just breaking for Meghan! All the more reason, I hope she walks down the aisle alone to Harry. It really is "just we 2" when it comes to them! As much as she loves her Mom, I think there would be something freeing in her walking to him, with no one from her past, handing her off to him. They have made their way together & they will continue to make their way together! So we shall see how it goes on the day! Prayer for Harry & Meghan that they can put the unhappy parts aside & surround themselves with the warmth & the love of the True Friends & Family that are around them!!

Yet, at the same time, I’m starting to wonder, as others have here and elsewhere, just why exactly Harry hasn’t met her father before now. Is their relationship strained? Is he just a recluse that doesn’t want to go anywhere or meet anyone? So many things we don’t know. Let’s just hope the wedding goes off without any additional issues arising.

  32. This this is all very sad. What I can’t understand is why her father went to the press rather than discussing this with H&M and then releasing a statement accordingly. He seems to have been sadly caught up in a whole lot of shanigans - be it innocently or intentionally - and I do think the press have been badgering the poor man - he seems to have been left vulnerable at this late stage in the wedding plans. I don’t believe it’s a heart attack just pure embarrassment that he’s being stupidly caught out. Having said that, I can believe it justifies missing your own daughters wedding no matter what status. I think from H&M’s concern was always to set this wedding as a personal low key event ( for royalty) and maybe it was always going to hard for Mr Markle to attend ( he seemed a bit of recluse). It’s heartbreaking that this should happen so close to the day when expectations had been set. I await to see if Meghan can persuade him otherwise.

Imagine this happening just days before your father is supposed to walk you down the aisle in front of The World!!! Can She not catch a break or have a moment of peace??? My heart truly goes out to her!! :(

    1. I love that you got an alert! I wish Doria would move to the UK and then the borders an be closed. I think a 73-year-old could handle himself better regardless of the situation. Heart attacks, panic attacks, being paid for fake photos, icky half-sister with black hair. Who could make this up?? Meghan accused of forgetting where she came from---well, duh, I hope she can.

  39. I feel so bad for Meghan. My parents are divorced, there’s acrimony, and there was a lot of drama the week of my wedding. It was bad enough without having to worry about what the Queen might think or having it be international news. Luckily — perhaps the only time I’d say this — Harry has Been There, too, so I bet he’s very sympathetic.

  40. I could be wrong but I think we might be getting the wrong picture about Meghan's state of mind right now. Coming from a dysfunctional family myself, I would feel nothing but relief at the prospect of them NOT showing up on my wedding day! A bride has enough to deal with without stressing over how their relatives are coming across. That goes double for royalty! As someone else mentioned, the fact that in two years, Meghan never found the time to introduce Harry and her father, seems to point to the fact that they just aren't that close. Family relationships are complicated and we need to respect and understand that. I suspect (and hope, frankly) that Meghan is feeling only relief that he is no longer coming. The embarrassment that he has caused from afar would pale I suspect with the humiliation of any potential screw-ups in front of billions of people watching on Saturday. I think he made a wise decision for himself AND his daughter to bow out.

    1. So better that he doesn't show up and potentially do something to embarrass his daughter in her new life? That doesn't sound very nice.... Do we disown our family because they may not fit in? I'm sad I'm reading comments like this. It's a very self absorbed attitude.

    2. I agree Anon 22:26. I am married into a dysfunctional family (along with my own families slightly less dysfunctional problems). Maybe she was avoiding including her Dad but got caught up in the excitement and allowed herself to invite him. That would explain not visiting him for so long and including him last minute. Possibly she just learned the lesson again that it's best to cut ties. There is nothing wrong with cutting out toxic family members who you can't trust. I just found myself talking my husband into including his very dysfunctional family member to a family event and he almost acquiesced. Luckily he didn't. Last time she went to a wedding she got into a fist fight with a guest. Children of people like this are ever hopeful but at some point have to move on for their own mental health.

    3. And I might add my husband and I eloped to Las Vegas and did a drive through wedding to avoid crazy family dynamics. Meghan might be wishing she could do that right about now.

    4. @Kate, clearly you have been blessed with a functional family backround. I'm happy for you! Enjoy, but please dont belittle and invalidate the very real trauma and pain that those of us dealing with broken homes/abusive family members experience on the daily. Toxic family relationships exist whether we have personal experience with them or not (or whether we want to acknowledge it or not!) Meghan is clearly the victim of a VERY dysfunctional family, sadly
including her father and so yes, maybe Meghan is happy with his decision. Sometimes it's a relief to not have to worry about more trauma being potentially inflicted...on a global platform no less. Victims learn to live quite happily without "family" being a part of their big moments. Meghan is older and has probably already grieved the family she DESERVED to have and has made peace with the reality. I hope so!:) Maybe this is welcome news that will allow her to relax and really enjoy this time!

I don’t think it’s a selfish attitude. Some people and some family situations are just toxic. I was a bridesmaid for a friend whose dad refused to attend her wedding because the groom didn’t ask for “permission” to marry her. The dad wouldn’t budge on his opinion and missed out on the wedding of his only child. Honestly, the day was better off because he wasn’t there.

    6. I think Anon is reflecting that something is amiss---on all those travels, MM seems to have never traveled to see her father. Again, we will never know why and cannot judge. But something is out of whack.

    7. I think a lot of people are projecting their own feelings and experiences onto this situation. No one knows what Meghan's relationship with her dad is like. There is much speculation going on here imo.

    8. I so agree Kate. I totally get that she would not invite these half siblings who have mostly put themselves embarrassingly out on public display. Meghan was not in their lives after a certain point. Obviously she still was in contact with her father or there would not have been an announcement that her father would walk her down the aisle. I don't think Mr. Markle has a healthy self esteem and feels not worthy is my guess. He made a mistake but that mistake was just not that huge by comparison to other royal scandals. I like to think that Meghan is disappointed that her father has declined. He has had I imagine numerous opportunities to be interviewed and steadfastly did not. I so feel for that man.

  41. I honestly don't know what to believe when it comes to all the swirling tales of Meghan's family. I feel bad that her half-siblings have caused so much trouble and hope whatever is going on with her dad will not be too much to keep her from enjoying this weekend.

    Those hotels look absolutely amazing!

I'm also sad and confused about this whole unfortunate thing. On the one hand I really feel very sorry for Meghan and her father; on the other hand, and I'm sorry I can't explain it clearly, I have a feeling that with Mr. Markle absent, there may be fewer reasons to be afraid of awkward moments, situations and ways of behaviour on different people's part...? Who knows but it is certainly sad and Meghan must be so upset. I hope she has a lot of support from her closest ones.

  43. 🌸 I still so very much hope Harry and William stand sideways or something facing the entrance of the church so they can both watch the bride and her bridal party walk down the aisle. Not with their backs to the entrance. That doesn’t make good sense, yeh?

    1. I didn’t understand William and Harry were facing away. I was thrilled when Harry turned and whispered to William about Kate. I’m also hoping they’ll either be facing the entrance or slightly sideways so they can see the entrance.

If you watch the video very closely of William and Kate, after Harry whispered to him, William did turn around and sneak a glimpse of Catherine.

  44. So many posted comments coincided with my thoughts and speculations. And there have been far worse royal scandals.

But I do feel for the father, Thomas Markle. I can't help but have empathy for him. All of this could have brought on his "heart attack", which yes could easily have been a panic attack. He leads a very reclusive life and appears to be a loner.

Obviously Meghan is closer to her Mum which is totally understandable. It doesn't mean she doesn't love or care about her father.

Meghan will have a great and beautiful wedding day.

  45. I hope the Prince of Wales will walk Meghan down the aisle. That might seem a bit strange, given the role of 'giving' the bride away, in this case to his own son. And of course Prince Charles's own morals have not always been pure. But it would demonstrate the support of the royal family for Meghan and Harry, and stamp out the sense that she has been left unsupported and without an escort.

My feeling about Mr. Markle is that he is not a sophisticated man, though he worked for a long time in Hollywood. The milieu he was expected to enter was alien to him, and he was not prepared to deal with it. The sister of course is a bad influence; she too is a fish it too much water with the media. She has learned to swim in it badly.

  47. It didn't really seem like he was ever really going to attend...
The Palace must be sickened by the fiasco being played out in the media.
I am sure they will have a great day and this will all be forgotten. Agree that perhaps MM isn't very upset at all that he won't be there...his was seemingly only a very last minute addition anyway. I don't think she needs the 'poor Meghan' platitudes at all. She seems a strong worldly woman who has the man of her dreams!

  49. I am now hoping that her dad will go to the wedding but not walk her down the aisle. He could attend privately and leave afterwards. I am sure he does not want to have to meet the Queen but if he met Harry , I’m sure Meghan would be happy. Sinead

  50. I hope he can be persuaded to come. This is the loving father who gifted his daughter with a doll family that "matched" by putting two sets together, who was wise and loving enough to help her understand as a child that she needed to draw her own box. The rest is fluff. I feel so bad for her and for her father.

  51. And while I am commenting :-) If her father is unable to do this, and I use the word unable deliberately, then my prediction is that Harry will walk down the aisle with her. :-)

  53. Love this post about the hotels and food. So Meghan will do a tea party immediately. That will put her work experience and skills to good use. I hope she picks a lovely summer hat for the day. No messy bun! She'll be an HRH by then. It will be interesting to see the small alterations to her very American, minimalist style that might entail.
