The Duchess of Sussex Makes a Stylish Return for Trooping the Colour!

Fresh from their honeymoon, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined the Royal family for Trooping the Colour, the Queen's annual birthday parade.

Harry and Meghan arriving at Buckingham Palace this morning.

The newlyweds returned on Thursday following a fortnight away. Their chosen location remains a mystery thus far, although seasoned royal reporters believe it's likely they travelled to Africa given the significance the continent holds for them as a couple. Today's appearance marks the beginning of a very busy six months for the Sussexes, and heralds the start of a new annual tradition. For readers who are new to following the royals, Trooping is one of a number of events we'll see Meghan at annually. The grand military parade is one of the finest displays of pageantry in celebration of the monarch's birthday.

The pair were all smiles as they travelled in a horse-drawn carriage for the procession. They were joined by the Duke of Kent.

Also in the procession; the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge.

Trooping the Colour actually originated in traditional preparations for battle. Colours, or flags, were trooped down the rank so they could be seen by the soldiers. In 1748, it was announced the parade would also mark the sovereign's official birthday. The event is steeped in royal history and tradition. Although the Queen's birthday is 21 April, it has long been tradition to celebrate the sovereign's birthday publicly on a day in June, when there's a better chance of good weather. Thankfully the weather cooperated today allowing the glorious display to unfold as planned.

More on the history of the day:

'The Sovereign's birthday is officially celebrated by the ceremony of Trooping the Colour (Queen's Birthday Parade). This impressive display of pageantry takes place on a Saturday in June by her personal troops, the Household Division, on Horse Guards Parade, with Her Majesty the Queen herself attending and taking the salute. The parade route extends from Buckingham Palace along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and back again.
During the ceremony, The Queen is greeted by a Royal salute and carries out an inspection of the troops. After the massed bands have performed a musical 'troop', the escorted Regimental Colour is carried down the ranks. The Foot Guards and the Household Cavalry then march past Her Majesty, and The King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, rank past. The Queen rides in a carriage back to Buckingham Palace at the head of her Guards, before taking the salute at the Palace from a dais.'

The Queen has attended Trooping the Colour every year since 1947, except in 1955 when a national rail strike cancelled the event. Last Saturday marked 65 years since the Queen's Coronation - 65 years dedicated to service and duty. On Thursday, Meghan will have the opportunity to see the monarch when she joins her for an overnight trip on the Royal Train ahead of a day of engagements in Chester.

I saw this photo of the Queen, then five-year-old Princess Elizabeth, taken at Trooping the Colour in 1931, with her mother the Duchess of York and her grandmother Queen Mary. Meghan wore Queen Mary's bandeau tiara on her wedding day.

An enormous amount of planning and preparation goes into ensuring the annual event runs as smoothly as possibly.

Over 1,400 officers and military personnel are on parade, together with two hundred horses; over four hundred musicians from ten bands and corps of drums march and play as one.

Below, Prince Charles, Colonel of the Welsh Guards; Prince William, Colonel of the Irish Guards; the Princess Royal, Colonel of the Blues and Royals; and Prince Andrew. Harry doesn't ride on horseback at the event as he's not a Royal Colonel yet, neither did Andrew until this year when he succeeded his father as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.

Then it was time for Meghan's first Buckingham Palace balcony appearance...

Meghan and Kate chatting on the balcony.

A great shot of the newlyweds.

Curtsies from the Duchesses.

A highlight of Trooping is always seeing so many members of the family gather on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Below, young royals Charlotte, George and Savannah enjoying it.

There was a terrific turnout as always.

People reports "Among the many privileges of being the Queen: the Royal Air Force puts on a sky show in your honor. After returning to Buckingham Palace, the monarch concludes her birthday fanfare with a fly-past consisting of more than 25 military aircraft soaring brilliantly over the palace in small formations 30 seconds apart. In recent years, the RAF featured 28 aircraft of 13 different types, including The Red Arrows, an aerobatic team that decorated the London skyline with red, white and blue smoke."

A dramatic sight as the flypast approaches.

A video from the balcony.

Meghan was stylish in a bespoke pale pink Caroline Herrera ensemble with large asymmetric buttons and an off-the-shoulder neckline. We've all been looking forward to seeing Meghan's sartorial choices for today, I thought the choice very contemporary and stylish for the new Duchess.

Meghan's hat is a bespoke Philip Treacy design.

Meghan accessorised with Birks rings.

What Meghan Wore notes they are the rose gold Snowflake and the Bee-Chic styles.

Meghan carried a bespoke Carolina Herrera clutch (with thanks to What Meghan Wore).

It was wonderful to see Meghan at her first Trooping!

    3. Anonymous USA- that’s a rumour. Otherwise princess Eugene would only wear nude too. She’s worn pinks, reds at Christmas and even union jacks painted on her nails. I think the rumour started because most of them seem to prefer nudes or clear. I’m not saying they could wear orange to something official lol, that could be a rule, but it is just a rumour that it HAS to be nude or clear :)

      Delete
    4. Anon 22:14, I also wondered about her non-nude, non-clear nail polish. I suppose that if it was truly forbidden, it would not have happened. Maybe rules and expectations are relaxed a bit for the wife of the sixth in line to the throne.

I don't think it is the same hat. You can tell from how the curve cups the top of her head that this one is more streamline while the other one was more just a bump on the head. The other one also had a larger brim going to the back while this one seems to have the same length of brim going both forwards and backwards.

      Delete
    2. I was asking myself the same question.

    3. No, that one was a hat and this one is a fascinator. The difference is the base and the brim. :)

    1. I'm a bit surprised by the off the shoulder look. I thought it was against protocol but I like it. She has great shoulders and neck, and this shows it off. Can't say I'm a big fan of beige pink though.

      Delete
    2. I was surprised by the off the shoulder as well. It’s completely appropriate, but not something I thought would be well received by HM at this specific type of event. On the plus side, we can see tan lines which would indicate no potential topless honeymoon sunbathing photos to emerge. 😉

    3. Lol Katie! It’s true, we tend to go on and on about appropriate and then forget how many missteps other members have made.

  12. Wow, she looks lovely! I wish we could get a live feed here in the US :( I'm glad she has finally begun to wear larger hats - maybe her beret-type hats were just pre-royal and now she feels she's "graduated" to larger brimmed hats? Whatever the reason, I love it.

I love the color on her...but why is that dress so familiar? Have we seen her in it before? Or maybe just have seen that shoulder/side seam silhouette on her before? A greenish-blueish dress, right? Or am I making this up? Somehow her look today is reminding me of something!

A couple of other notes - it's odd to me that both Kate and Camilla are wearing an almost identical color to the queen! I thought that kind of thing was usually avoided (but maybe that's not correct?). Also...I'm really disappointed that Sophie work Emilia Wickstead, after EW's comments about Meghan on her wedding day and her "copied" dress.

    1. I may be wrong but I think Camilla's dress is actually light grey. Kate's is definitely blue though as is HMTQ's. Like you I thought royal ladies didn't do that. Maybe it's ok because Kate's is a little lighter blue?

      I agree Meghan looks pretty!

    2. I think Meghan looked lovely, I loved the two piece-suit. She looked fantastic and nervous a bit. I still can't believe though how smoothly she does all these things.

Sophie is a bit of a disappointment for me too. But life happens.

And what a picture, the Queen with her mum and grandma. Thank you Charlotte for digging that up or include it in the post. Put things into perspective!!

it is sad to see the Queen unsmiling and not waving as she returns down the Mall. Perhaps she was tired after standing most of the time when she was reviewing the troops?

    4. I didn't realize Sophie was in wickstead. And at a very visible event too. Not a nice message, Sophie.

    5. And I think the three lady in the line to the throne wearing the same color in different shade is a clear message to the press ,royal watchers and new fan joining after the wedding about the hirarchy in the firm ;) .

Keep in mind that Wickstead’s comments was made in the week after the wedding. That isn’t even 2 weeks ago. By that time Sophie most probably already had her outfit selected as well as the accessories made. And while Meghan might prefer not to send any more work Wickstead’s way, I doubt she would want Sophie to give up her favourite designer on her behalf in any case.

      Delete
    7. Perhaps the dress was ordered before the comments were made about Meghan's dress.

      Delete
    8. Also, Wickstead said she did not make those comments, I believe, and I imagine she immediately reached out to Kate to say that personally.

Wish I could see Sophie's dress---it looks so awful in the carriage.

    9. inthekitchen Priyanka Chopra wore an open-neckline "suit" style dress to Meghan's wedding, in a lavendar color. Perhaps that's the familiarity? I dunno, I always think of Helena Bonham Carter when I see this style for some reason. Kind of bombshell-y, corset-y or at least very structured spin on a suit.

      Delete
    10. the neckline is similar to charlene of Monaco wedding dress.

    11. I had not seen reported anywhere that EW reached out to Kate to deny the comments @Allison in US. The statement on EW's own website didn't actually say the comments weren't made--just that EW was "saddened" by the online reports. I tend to think it may have been too late for Sophie to put together another outfit.

      Delete
    12. I read on another post that Sophie's dress is a repeat from Ascot, and may have a cut-out in the back - true?

      Delete
    13. I can't believe Sophie doesn't have a closet full of clothes she could choose from.

      Delete
    14. you are right---she was just very saddened, so perhaps she said the remarks an was saddened that some traitorous employee leaked them. :)

But Sophie wore this icky pink dress in 2017 and must have thought it was a good choice for today. I think the weaerr should have an absolutely perfect body, and even then, the wearer must have other clothes that look better.

    7. @ bluhare, I was rather surprised to see Sophie wearing a Wickstead dress after what Ms. Wickstead said about Meghan’s wedding dress and hair, personally I wouldn’t wear a designer who insulted my family member. And yeah, it appears that Sophie’s dress exposed quite a bit of her upper back.

      Delete
    8. 🌸 I thought Sophie’s was a little too bare also. And just not a good style. Sadly, Sophie’s “style” is often kind of puzzling.

    9. I agree Laura I. My first thought was 'she looks beautiful, but bare shoulders?' Beautiful color & style (love asymmetrical) but the suit looks just a bit out of place for the occasion.

    13. Agree Lauri! I wouldn't either. And Sophie's dress bares quite a bit more than Meghan's I think. Personal taste for me would be Meghan's shoulders a smidge higher, but that's just personal taste, not propriety.

Who was the man in uniform in the carriage with Marry and Meghan? if it was the Duke of Kent who seems to be too frail to ride a horse then surely Harry could take over his position.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Harry doesn't ride because he is not a royal colonel. The Duke of Kent is one (as are others who don't ride.) I don't think his position as a colonel would be taken away & given to Harry just because the duke is too old to ride in the parade.

    3. Yes, it's the Duke of Kent, who is Colonel of the Scots Guards. Harry isn't a royal Colonel and won't be till one of the current 5 dies or passes over the position, as the Duke of Edinburgh did to Andrew this year.

  30. Not a fan of the dress, having first to overcome my antipathy to that pinky-beige shade, though it suits her honeymoon tan well. The off-shoulder detail and asymmetric buttons are not a good mix. Boring hat. I hope she overcomes her dislike of embellishment on hats. She is sticking firmly to her style. I hope she gets outside her comfort zone a teeny bit at these rituals, as time goes by. She’s a beautiful woman, she can carry it off.

    2. I agree about the hats, Lauri. With the exception of Camilla - who I hope never changes her hat game -- I much prefer simpler hats. And actual hats, rather than plates on heads. I think a matching pillbox hat would have been lovely.

  33. I think with this style hat, hair would look better up, but Meghan looks very pretty for her first Trooping experience. I am on the fence about her suit. I think the color looks great on her, but I don’t like the suit itself.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The color is perfect, very pretty on her and my guess is it was intended to show she will appropriately blend in at this event and not stand out. (Imagine if she’d worn a bright pink light Kate’s last year?) I love the dress on its own, but I think the wide neck and sleeveless was not the best for a military parade. She and Carolina Herrara could have studied past outfits and realized that perhaps.

The hat is perfection too but the loose hair seemed to be giving her challenges. That’s all right - touching the hat and touching her hair is endearing and shows she’s still going through the learning curve.

  35. Great look. Meghan seems to be very relaxed from a sunny honeymoon. Her skin looks fantastic. I adore her outfit (never thought I would actually say that). You could argue that the slightly off-shoulder look doesn’t seem to fit right with the character of the event, but I believe those are the perks to be so far away from the throne. Kate, as future queen cannot wear something like this to such occasions (don’t believe she would anyway), but Meghan can and I love it.
I was surprised about her curled hair, obviously people will make connections as this is somewhat Kate’s standard. But it looks beautiful. The hat is the biggest win for me and for once I don’t miss any nice jewellery.
I fear jewellery is a topic where both, Meghan and Kate, will never satisfy me.
As for colour choices. I think it is fitting that the two women next to the throne wear something that ties them to the Queen, but then- blue is THE colour in the BRF so I wonder what the rest is wearing. It is nice that Meghan opted for something different and she is glowing.

    1. I agree with your comment on her wearing an off the shoulder dress is a perk to being far from the throne. I also know her dress has been scrutinized but she wouldn't be allowed to wear that dress in public without senior royal aides - probably even the Queen since this is her first major royal event- approving it. I think it is refreshing.

      Delete
    2. Sigh, folks need to get off this "she is so far down the line it doesn't matter." If Kate wanted to, she would totally wear this because there is nothing about it that breaks protocol or good taste. It has nothing to do with position to the throne (as a consort) but to each duchesses' own taste.

      Delete
    3. I really think it’s going too far to suggest she shouldn’t curl her hair because it’s too much like Catherine’s. Meghan’s hair is naturally curly and she has it relaxed and straightened, but she’s free to vary her look when she wants too.

I’ve said this elsewhere, I think, but - Meghan and Catherine are women of similar age and station, and they both came into their roles as long-haired brunettes. There is going to be overlap in their fashion and grooming choices. It’s natural and inevitable. Give them both a break. :)

  37. Wow, I love this look!! The color, fit and style of this dress fit Meghan to a tee! The color really brings out her lovely tan and are those tan lines I see on her shoulders? Someone's been relaxing in the sun :) Meghan has worn this off-the-shoulder style 3-4 times since her engagement and I suspect that it's a favorite look of hers and one we'll see for some time to come. I do agree however, that it might not have been completely appropriate for today but I imagine that Meghan ran it past either her advisor or someone in the know and was told it was fine. Either way, it's a great look on Meghan and if anyone can rock it, she can!

It appears that Meghan is one of those rare souls for whom every hat looks great on them! I love this sleek, chic hat on her, nary a flower, piece of lace or feather in sight! As someone who is not a fan of fru-fru, it's joy to see! lol

  38. Oh, I want to be queen and have people make a parade in my honor. *sighs*. Question: Is Meghan allowed to show her shoulders and wear a different colored nail polish? I adore her gorgeous style! I love how she pushes the envelope yet still stays within protocol.

  39. I love this look and appreciate that she is maintaining her own style choices with the off the shoulder dress. I’m sure it’s not easy to select an outfit that will be seen by millions and you know will be scrutinized to every last detail. I love her hair down and I’m not bothered by her touching her hair - I am constantly touching my hair and face and it is very difficult when my hair is up to not do it. Perhaps she’s the same way and doesn’t want to pull out a style because she’s touching it too much.

I love seeing her and Kate together. They look like they get along quite well and I’m curious to see how their relationship evolves in the coming year.

We haven’t seen much interaction with Harry & Meghan with the children but I’m hoping that as the kids get older, we’ll get a peek of them as an aunt & uncle. I would love for Charlotte or George to walk with them for the christening just a few steps behind William, Kate and Louis. I imagine it’s a close relationship and I hope we see it one day.

  40. The Duchess of Sussex looks beautiful. I refuse to compare her to the Duchess of Cambridge. I believe both ladies would appreciate that it is NOT done. The Duchess of Cambridge found her Royal style and the Duchess of Sussex will do the same. Today the Duchess of Sussex looked simply gorgeous. I remember the Duchess of Cambridge wearing a couple of formal dresses that showed “a lot of leg”. Was that too “Hollywood” or just the right amount of “Royalty”? The Queen knows how to correct both Duchesses, should there be a need. I think all the ladies, which includes the Duchess of Cornwall, looked lovely. Thanks, Charlotte. I so very much enjoyed reading the history re “Trooping the Color”. Fantastic work from you, of which, I have come to expect.

    1. Kate’s short dresses were called out and met with a lot of criticism. Which is rather sad, I liked them - as long as they didn’t flash. Which unfortunately happened at some formal events.
Meghan will get criticism for her decisions. Sometimes unfair sometimes well earned. She is only human after all and humans tend to make mistakes. That is what happens when you live a very public life and the British press is known as hard. As long as no one is insulting her I see no problem with pointing out where she should improve.

  41. I've looked at multiple sites to find photos of the whole family on the balcony but can't seem to find them. I'm looking to see if Prince Edward was there? I find it odd that he and Sophie are so often not together publicly. I see her at many events but usually it's without Edward. If he was at the Trooping, which I would assume he was, why didn't he ride with his wife? Any ideas?

    3. One idea. It seems he was abroad on a trip to Beijing & Shanghai until yesterday presenting awards for the DoE's International Award Foundation. Maybe he is not yet back? Or given the travel distance even if he is back he was "excused" from today's ceremony by TQ? Often the work he and Sophie do abroad doesn't get alot of press-- and I've noticed sometimes it's thought they are absent from UK events for no reason.

    4. I was looking for Edward as well, so I did a little sleuthing. ITV.com reports that “the Earl of Wessex was not present as he is thought to be returning from an overseas trip.”

I don’t know if Edward and Sophie are apart any more than the other royal couples. I think because they are not as newsworthy as a couple, you don’t see pictures of them together off-duty very often. But it’s normal that they would carry out engagements by themselves. When you think about it, they can cover much more ground separately than if they did everything together. It’s the same for Princess Anne and her husband, and even Kate and Camilla carry out most of their engagements by themselves. I enjoyed seeing the Wessex family together at Harry’s wedding. They really seem to enjoy being with their kids.

It's odd, I also don't see Edward or Sophie on the balcony, or James even. I can only see Louise. Sophie was definitely in a carriage because I noticed she was wearing a repeat Emilia Wickstead (worn before at Ascot, I think). Maybe Edward is ill? I don't think he's short enough to be hidden behind Andrew there...Sophie could be because she's short, but you'd think we'd see Edward's head at least. Odd!

  44. I have a question. Why do people want to put Meghan in a box as far as her hair and dress code is concerned? It really bothers me that we nit pick every dress or hairstyle choice. What is very clear is that her new family has accepted her and she is a grown woman who knows what is appropriate or not so why do we feel the need to pass this level of judgement.

I am perhaps taking it personally but I come from a rather conservative society where the way you dress is judged by both men and women and it irks me because I am one of those people who has her very own style and I try to remain respectful to societal expectations but staying true to myself.

I get that it is fun to comment about the fashion and everything that goes with that but I feel like there are other things we need to be focusing on. Also me thinks that at the end of the day you can't please everyone so it is probably best to be true to you.

    1. Agreed, NWO. Now that she's gone all "boring" coat-dress duchessy, on Duchess Kate Blog people frequently lament the absence of Catherine's "pre-wedding" fashion style. Ironically, here it seems that because Meghan is American people want to whip her into stiff and whatever they deem as suitably regal British-ness. Really? Why? The fundamental fun of fashion is its capriciousness.

As for the formal/royal/daytime royal dress code, is there really such a thing which stipulates no shoulders or bare arms? Or is it merely that most of the other royals (who are not particularly fashion-forward in the first place) have chosen to dress ultra-conservatively?

Thus, if that should be the case, because some royal watchers have not seen anything else, they merely wish for what they have been accustomed to seeing in the past. If that is the case, please don't pretend to look for anything fashionable. Watch Walt Disney films. They do fantasy princesses.

Fashion is now and fresh and new. But for a few, brief, retro flashbacks reprised in a fresh way now and then, fashion is not staid or looking backwards.

    2. Meghan and Harry haven't been holding hands when they are at events on the behalf of the Queen this entire time starting with the Commonwealth service. People each time have jumped on it as evidence that they were told to stop the PDA, but each time at the next event they would be holding hands again. One of the Commonwealth receptions was particularly telling where as soon as left the building and they were done Harry immediately grabbed Meghan hand just for the short walk to the car.

It has become obvious Meghan and Harry follow different protocols based on the nature of the engagement. Every time Meghan has been at an event on behalf of the Queen she has been wearing tights and not holding hands. If they are at their own events under the Royal Foundation then they are back to their normal behavior. I think it is important to also remember that Meghan is not a rebel. She's been too much the high achieving good girl her entire life to be a rebel. She's obvious not passive, but by nature she tries to make change happen within the system, rather than rebel against it.

    3. I agree. I refuse to believe bare shoulders are a protocol violation in 2018. She’s also worn similar styles more than once in the 6 plus months she’s been in the royal public eye. Someone would have corrected her. Clearly that hasn’t happened which in my mind means it’s not a problem. It’s tasteful. No excessive cleavage or anything. I don’t really see the big deal. Obviously the queen isn’t going to wear it but tbh I think that has more to do with age than formality.

  66. I’m constantly surprised (ok not really it seems par for the course) at the continued criticism at Meghan dressing “inappropriately”. I mean it’s not as if she’s showing cleavage or something see-through. She’s surrounded by the best, including a former secretary of the Queen. Surely if it was inappropriate someone would advise her against wearing it. I just don’t see Meghan saying “eff it. I’ll wear what I want” and cause waves. Especially being the newest member of the family. Good grief. Am reminded of the barrage of criticism Michelle Obama got for wearing sleeveless tops and dresses and being labeled “inappropriate” and “disrespectful”. Unsurprisingly people calling her were only looking for reason to criticize her. I saw this article on twitter and it summed it up for me nicely, https://tomandlorenzo.com/2018/06/duchess-of-sussex-in-carolina-herrera-at-the-trooping-the-colour-ceremony/

Anyways, I thought everyone looked wonderful. The men dashing in uniform and the ladies beautiful. They all looked stunning and I loved the hats. The only real miss for me was Sophie, and not just because she wore EW. Oh well. Eugenie’s green dress looked gorgeous on her. Beatrice looked a bit bland I suppose but not bad per se. I thought Camilla and Kate in pale blues was a subtle nod as their future roles as queens as the Queen herself was in that bright and bold blue. Meghan looked like a glowing newlywed and nicely tanned. I personally wouldn’t have worn off the shoulder but only because I’m not comin that style. I’d constantly feel the need to tug the sleeves up LOL. The camaraderie on the balcony was very nice and the kids stole the show. Well behaved but still acting like kiddos haha. Overall the successful day for all and it looks like the weather cooperated. Which is always nice.

    1. I don't really see a similarity b/w the criticisms of Michelle and Meghan. Yes, they were/are both assuming a role that had certain expectations. But being a member of the Royal Family is far more tradition bound than being First Lady. Obviously whoever the royal "minders" are thought what she wore was fine. Great. Or maybe they didn't "approve," but they couldn't stop here. Great. My disliking Meghan's clothing today isn't so much about what's appropriate for the event - although I didn't think it was appropriate - but about what I like in general. The style just didn't do it for me, and I would't have liked it whoever was wearing it.

      Delete
    2. Agreed that people are just looking for something to criticize and it's often motivated by racism (whether it is a conscious or unconscious bias) or at least a refusal to accept an "outsider" as part of the Royal Family. I notice Meghan is often criticized for things that Kate has worn or done but Kate does not get the same amount of vitriol by far.

There is nothing inappropriate about bare shoulders. She's not meeting the Pope. Good grief.

      Delete
    3. I too find it baffling. If the Queen finds it inappropriate she would say something. All of these events are choreographed carefully. Actually I don't find it baffling. I just think it's a bit of chauvinism that Meghan seems determined to stick to her own style, which is sort of "American," instead of going all in on the fancy flowered fascinators. But as I said, I like that she sticks to her own style. Not to compare but do we want to see Kate-style coatdresses for the rest of her duchess existence?

      Delete
    4. During Kate's first years, there were lots of comnents about inappropriate clothing. So, this is not Meghan specific. Besides, different people, depending on age etc, have varying opinions about what is or is not appropriate.

Love M's choice of outfit, the summery suit style is more formal than a dress, asymmetry makes it interesting, the shade of pink, or is it rose/beige (can't tell precisely from the digital photos - but no matter), is elegant, contrasts pleasingly with what others in the Royal ensemble are wearing. Neither trying to outshine, nor hide. Perfect fit on all counts. Oh sigh...!

  71. I think Meghan looks stunning, but I also think she looks inappropriate. She seems to have a knack for wearing something very flattering, but wrong for the occasion. This off the shoulder look is not a good selection for day wear, especially since all the other women on the balcony had long sleeves. Is nobody advising Meghan in her choices? She is far more Hollywood glam, than Duchess.

  74. So my thoughts on the off the shoulder comments - I guess were all familiar ( or maybe it could be just us stuffy lot in the U.K.) about certain rules of dress code for big events like Royal Ascot etc ( the royal enclosure has guidelines and I quote -
“Ladies are kindly asked to note the following:
    • Strapless, off the shoulder, one shoulder, halter neck, bardot and spaghetti straps are not permitted.”

So given the fact that Trooping the Colour is one of the main formal ceremonies of the Royal calendar and with everyone in regimental uniform - I guess some are used to the same sort of unwritten protocols.
I’m not condemning the look, but just merely stating to those querying why many have commented on the bare shoulders and no sleeves it’s one of those things that many would not expect.

I thought she looked gorgeous but, as I commented above, it was a bit surprising to see so much bare shoulder on display, added to the bare arms - at this event. Especially given this was a bespoke outfit.
Probably her hair was down to not only differentiate the look from the garden party but also to help go to cover the shoulders and keep the look modest?

I don’t want to be prissy about it all - a more modest approach on these big occasions is what royalty has always been about and expected - some want Meghan to do the unexpected and breath some new life into the Firm. Is this a subtle way of using dress to send out her message she’s doing it her way?

I did wonder on the balcony line up though - did she look around and take note of everyone else slightly more modestly dressed or did she not give a hoot and was confident in her own choice. Fitting in or standing out is a personal choice that she makes now. I don’t think it’s about loosing her indentity either. I dress differently for different social events and sometimes to impress or create a first impression, and also sometimes to show comformity. My fashion choices have changed from 10 - 5 and two years ago. And I’m a poor bloke let alone a glamorous woman with many more looks to play with. Styles change, preferences change.

It will be really interesting to see her choices for the day with the queen.

  75. I don't think advisers or the Queen stipulate on what should be worn. Diana said quite pointedly that she was left to her own devices in all matters.

  76. Love Carolina Herrera and this dress is lovely, just not appropriate for today's event. She should have had her shoulders covered. Also, it's getting to be a bit redundant to see all these shoulder exposed garments on her - though she has lovely shoulders and exquisite collar bones. The color suits her and this time of day. Hopefully we see her switch up her style a bit, not repeating this same style of hat with a bump and brim or a beret.

  78. Meghan looked beautiful today! But for my personal taste, the overall look was a bit too "girly" - super feminine cut, all pink, nail polish, AND curls?! I would actually welcome "messier" hair here! Or maybe straight and sleek?

My biggest complaint is the tailoring, though. It's pulling away from the buttons at the bust. Complaints aside, a beautiful look. I could get used to seeing Kate and Meghan together often! ;-)

Wow! Beautiful!! That is a great color on Meghan! So soft and pretty. This outfit is just darling. Love the buttons. She looks like a stylish duchess with just a tad bit sexy added to it! Not too much, just enough to capture Prince Harry’s eye :) Beautiful...well done.

  81. Regarding comparing Meghan and Kate...this has been on my mind for a while, and hopefully I can state it well. I agree about not comparing them **in ways that are detrimental to one or both**. Like, "Kate does it the right way, so Meghan has to do it the same way." A right/wrong approach isn't fair to either woman as an individual. Anything that Meghan does that's different from Kate doesn't mean that it's wrong. And Kate shouldn't be saddled with being the standard-bearer of what's right.

Example: Is an off-the-shoulder look appropriate for Trooping The Colour? That is a legitimate discussion topic. It would be unfair to say that it's not appropriate "because Kate doesn't do it". A worthy discussion would need to reference, e.g., the history of the event, the modern context of it, the outfits traditionally worn to it, and how those outfits related to the contemporary fashion expectations of their time.

My concern is that people might not raise interesting and worthy topics for fear of opening the door - or merely *appearing* to open the door - to unfair comparisons between Meghan and Kate.

Hopefully I said that well. :)

  82. I like the outfit, but it is too tight across the bust - you can see where it is straining at the buttons. Surely she should have had it tailored to fit her properly? It’s a matter of 1/8 inch at most, but it makes such a difference in photos!

  83. Meghan and Harry are back! That's fantastic. I do hope that there's a chance we'll learn where they were on honeymoon. It must have been warm - Meghan has a wonderful glow.

I only think her ensemble was risky given it could have been fairly chilly. Right? I do remember previous years when Camilla and Kate had a blanket over them. However, this is beginning to be somewhat of a signature look for Meghan. The off-shoulder of the Roland Mouret, her wedding gown and now here. I like the off-center buttons and I like that it's a two piece. Her clutch is stunning.

It's not clear to be if her hat is different from the garden party. Looks the same to me and why would you have two so-similar hats?

So exited to see what Meghan wears on Thursday - that seems so far away....
