The Duchess in Prada for The Queen's Young Leaders Awards!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex accompanied the Queen for a reception at Buckingham Palace to present awards to the Queen's Young Leaders for 2018 this evening.

It was a very fitting engagement for the couple who share a passion for the Commonwealth and plan to use their roles to visit member nations, strengthen links and support young people. In fact, Prince Harry has just returned from Lesotho, where he opened a school on behalf of Sentebale, a charity he co-founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. In April, Harry was appointed a Commonwealth Youth Ambassador by his grandmother, he also became patron of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust.

In 2014 a search was launched by William and Harry to find exceptional young people to receive the first ever Queen’s Young Leaders Awards.  Hundreds of applications flooded in from incredible young people all dedicated to making lasting change in their community and beyond. Each year from 2014 to 2018, 60 exceptional young people were selected to receive a Queen’s Young Leaders Award and become ‘Queen’s Young Leaders’ – one for every year that the Queen had served as Head of the Commonwealth at the time of her Diamond Jubilee. Guided by the values of the Commonwealth Charter, the goal of the programme is to enable young people to step up as leaders and improve the lives of people across the Commonwealth.

The Queen's Young Leaders Programme, now in its fourth and final year, celebrates the achievements of exciting young change-makers from across the Commonwealth. This year's cohort, from across 38 countries, are working to improve the lives of people across a diverse range of issues including supporting people living with mental health problems, access to education, promoting gender equality, food scarcity and climate change.

The Queen was 26 years old when she became Head of the Commonwealth. The programme was launched in honour of Her Majesty's lifetime of service to the Commonwealth – a global network of 53 countries and 2.4 billion people, of whom 60% are under 30 years old.

During a speech, Prince Harry said: "What you have achieved individually is formidable, but collectively, the possibilities are limitless. This is not the last you will hear from me. Earlier this year, I was honoured to have been named The Queen's Commonwealth Youth Ambassador, and I am committed to supporting the legacy of The Queen's Young Leaders and the 1.4 billion Commonwealth youth.I guess you can say you're stuck with me. I, together with my wife Meghan, look forward to convening young people from around The Commonwealth to hear your ideas, work with you to build platforms for you to collaborate and form partnerships, and continue to meet with many of you as we travel around in our work on behalf of The Royal Family. We look forward to meeting many of you this evening - but we also hope to see you in action in your home countries someday too."

More from Harry's speech:

'Your generation is the first that will have to deal hands-on with topics and issues that have been known about for a very long time. You are the future leaders who will need to pick up the baton on issues such as climate change, food security, equality and access to education, and improving the lives of the most vulnerable people in our communities.
The pace of change is happening so much faster than it did 100 years ago,  or even 50 years ago. A more interconnected world means that any local problem can become a global problem overnight, but at the same time the technology and innovation driving this inter-connectivity means that any local solution can become a global solution just as fast.
In this rapidly changing world, it is heartening to meet so many inspiring young people gathered here today, who have already stepped up as leaders and improved the lives of so many people across the Commonwealth. You are the hope and optimism the world needs and we will all do everything that we can to support you in it.'

The Queen presents young leaders with their medals.

Royal reporter Hannah Furness revealed Meghan met one of the recipients during her trip to India last year: "The Duchess, then Meghan Markle, has previously worked with a Queen's Young Leader winner of 2017, Suhani Jalota: founder of the Myna Mahila Foundation, one of the charity's on the couple's wedding gift list." The visit prompted Meghan to pen a powerful piece for Time about the the stigmatization of menstrual health. Below, Meghan chats with one of the winners.

The royals sat for official photos.

During the reception, Meghan chatted with leaders and heard about causes they are passionate about.

Harry and Meghan enjoyed meeting the leaders.

A terrific photo of the newlyweds.

Guests at the reception included the Chairman of The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, Sir John Major, Sir Lenny Henry, David Beckham, Nicola Adams, Caspar Lee, Neelam Gill, Ore Oduba and Tina Daheley.

Harry kept tight lipped when asked about the honeymoon. Emily Nash writes:

They were asked if they went to Namibia on honeymoon and Harry said they didn’t - but he wasn’t going to tell anyone where they did go with us around to report it!

Ahead of their Autumn tour, Harry and Meghan met Queen’s Young Leaders from Australia, New Zealand and Tonga.

Amy Pickerell has been assisting Meghan since the engagement, she's pictured in the background below.

Although it's the final year of the Queen's Young Leaders programme, the journey has just begun.

More from Buckingham Palace:

'Over the next 18 months, the Queen’s Young Leaders Programme will continue to champion the initiatives being undertaken by award winners and Highly Commended Runners-Up, support their networks and share their stories. A £200,000 Legacy Fund, open to all 240 Queen’s Young Leaders and 282 Highly Commended Runners-Up, to apply for grants to help elevate their work and enable them to work together to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing the Commonwealth will also open in September 2018.
The young Leaders form a unique, dedicated and powerful group of young people from 53 Commonwealth countries who are connecting, collaborating and changing lives together – and they will continue to do so for years to come.'

You can view a video of the ceremony below.

The Duchess was effortlessly regal in a bespoke Prada ensemble for the awards. The pale pink suit features a peplum effect top, a thin waist belt, button detailing and an asymmetrical skirt.

Meghan's gorgeous shoes are the Aquazzura Deneuve Bow Pointy Toe pumps (with thanks to Japanese Ginger).

Made in Italy, the stiletto heels are described as "A pert bow perched at the back ties together the chic detailing of a pointy-toe pump featuring side cutouts and a super slim stiletto." They retail for $750 at Nordstrom.

The Duchess carried her Prada Saffiano Clutch.

Meghan accessorised with a silver cross bracelet.

And completed the look with the Vanessa Tugendhaft Parisienne earrings (with thanks to What Meghan Wore).

We have an extended post this evening, sharing details regarding Harry and Meghan's Dublin itinerary for 10-11 July. It promises to be a fascinating two days which will see the couple focus on "meeting the people of Dublin and visiting organisations which are central to Irish life." It will mark Meghan's first overseas visit as a member of the royal family. Their mission is to bolster Anglo-Irish relations in the lead up to Brexit.

Engagements will include a Gaelic sports festival at Croke Park, the home of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Duke and Duchess will also attend a summer garden party at the British Ambassador's residence, where they will meet people from across Ireland's arts, sports, military and social enterprise sectors. I expect we'll see the Duchess in a summery evening dress for the event.

The Duke and Duchess  will learn about Ireland's culture and heritage, including a visit to Trinity College, where they will see the Book of Kells, one of Ireland's greatest cultural treasures.

The Duke and Duchess will also have a moment for reflection at the Famine Memorial, before visiting EPIC, the Irish Emigration Museum, telling the story of the 10 million Irish people who have emigrated across the world.

The couple will learn more about the bright future of Ireland during their time in Dublin, with a visit to DogPatch Labs, a co-working space for technology start-ups. Here, The Duke and Duchess will meet children and young people taking part in free coding workshops, and will also have the opportunity to talk to female tech entrepreneurs. We expect to see at least a couple of walkabouts during the visit. Additionally, they will meet President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

It's shaping up to be a very exciting trip!

  1. Duchess Meghan looks lovely as always! I have never followed all things royal but Meghan made me follow everything royal. For those wondering the little dip you see when the young ladies receive the award from the Queen is how traditional women respond in some Southern African eg countries Zambia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, it's a sign of respect to elders in general not just the Queen, I find it endearing. As a Southern African myself, I am happy they extended this part of the culture to the Queen.

  2. Ah. I was waiting for this! Thank you, Charlotte, for your quick post. I watched Harry's speech from last year while waiting and will be interested to see what the full program includes this year. It's a great thing for each of these young people so honored to be able to attend and be singled out, one by one, by the Queen.

Meghan looks elegant as usual, and I still get a thrill seeing her by Harry's side.

    1. OMG the shoes! The shoes the shoes THE SHOES!!!!! Meghan looks so polished and confident, her outfit is gorgeous but it's the shoes that IMO just seal the deal :-) The DM described them as a sensible court shoe...wow they are so not that! Shoe love is true love and Meghans shoe choices are just heavenly :-)

    2. The Shoe Game Is Powerful With This One!!! lol :)

    3. How can she possibly walk in those? I wish the royals would use their positions to demonstrate thet women don’t have to endure pain to be fashionable.

      Delete
    4. She probably doesn’t find them painful. Why should she change her preferred shoe style because someone else finds them uncomfortable?

      Delete
    5. The shoes took the skirt to a higher level of her status. Without the shoes,
the skirt would have passed for any mid length dress with a fancy draping.

    2. Yes that is real fun, colorful and informative to see the different traditional outfits. If there is one time neutral is practical, MM/ DOS did right by going neutral among all those variations of mostly colorfully dressed Young Leaders. Her dress looks khaki color on line; better than grey for this occasion. The belting, double breast and "khaki" looking image sort of recalls safari outfits. The length and style looks traditional princessly. I think she uses make up fitting the occasions. Someone here commented they like her make up here better than her wedding day. Her wedding day make up brought out the very best of her without looking like make up,in fact looked natural and lite.

  6. Absolutely divine- the whole look imo. I adore the shoes and with the bow it gives them a little extra special. I did find it endearing when Harry said “my wife Meghan”. I do hope the comparisons to Catherine don’t get too carried away especially when describing hair. I groaned when I read a couple of headlines.

  7. Meghan looks gorgeous and even "stunning,"although I hate that is word is used so often---I thought the outfit was white but it's pale pink. I guess her four go-to colors are white, black, navy, and pale pink. She seems to be wearing her delicate cross bracelet alone, so it is easier to see and appreciate. And her hair an smile were woderful.

This is a very very nice event and the recipients looked just wonderful; what a good program this is!

  8. The Duchess is charming and lovely in the apparent two piece garment, and exquisite posture. One wonders if wedding white is her favorite color. She did not get the "firm's" policy on 'no crossed legs'.

    1. I know, it's a little thing.... she was clearly doing "The Duchess Slant", but something didn't look the same as when I've seen it done by others... then I caught that while her legs were together & slanted sideways, they were actually crossed at the top. It just left a little pretzel vibe to my eye. I wonder if it's even a big deal? As long as her legs are together & slanted?? I have no idea! lol :)

      Delete
    2. I don't know whether the crossing the legs thing is a faux pas or not. I doubt very much that it is. But for me, personally, I don't like the casualness of it. This is a formal photo and it just doesn't look right to me see Meghan with her legs crossed. Again, this is just my own opinion. I don't think there is such a "protocol" although I suspect it is advised that women not cross their legs when sitting. There is one other woman with her legs crossed and I don't like the look of that either. What a great night for all concerned.

      Delete
    3. I saw on another website -- I can't remember where -- where someone had collected a number of photos of the Queen crossing her legs at the knee. So i think it's more a concern about whether a royal is accidentally showing any underthings or anything that shouldn't be seen. Meghan's skirt was shaped so that she could cross her legs and still be properly modest.

I love that skirt more than I ever thought I could since, until now, I have never seen a skirt with an asymmetrical hem that I like. But I think this one is stunning! Although I, too, was surprised that it's pink since most photos make it look winter white. But whatever the color, the skirt elevates the rather dowdily styled top really well.

Meghan has exquisite taste in her preferred minimalist style, and the way she uses unusual and unexpected accents to add a pop to her outfits is making me change a LOT of long-held opinions about styles!

Most of all, though, I love the event and the remarkable young people being honored. The U.S. news is so often depressing these days that the positivity and optimism of an event like this, rewarding young people for making a difference in the world, is really refreshing!

      Delete
    4. Probably because there's no such policy... ;-)

      Delete
    5. I honestly think most of these policies and protocols are made up. It always seems to me that the main royal etiquette is to be conservative and defer to the queen. I highly doubt a 90+ year old monarch is sending out memos about leg positioning. The royal family has weathered some awful and embarrassing scandals in its day. I just don’t think anything Meghan has supposedly done to break “protocol” even registers on anyone’s radar. There’s no score book of all the times she has some infraction of a non existent rule.

    6. Susan in Florida28 June 2018 at 16:56

Becca, I was taught in acting class to cross at the tip of the knee and keep the calves together on a slant. I see US actresses do this on talk shows. My legs are too short and my thighs are chubby so I can’t look as nice as the DoS ! Etiquette books say a lady doesn’t cross her legs because the upper thigh can be exposed.

    7. Laura47, I always find it intriguing how we all see things in such a variety of ways. I too love the skirt portion, but for me the top echoes Jackie Kennedy's style, so I'm quite fond of it & find it stylish. :)

    7. Because of her obvious love for Harry and her respect for her "adopted" country, its customs and institutions, Meghan seems eager to please. And she is a very fast learner! After all, she has lots of experience memorizing scripts and perfecting gestures and timing. Her posture is perfection, and she is quickly mastering her nervous habit of touching her hair constantly. She is an asset to the royal family, and the Queen recognized it immediately! (I did not find her crossed legs unattractive at all. Her legs are so slender and lithe that she can wrap them around each other so that they look elegant even when crossed!)

It is NOT too big, clothes used to be worn that way some years ago, no tight fitting , so much more elegant than those tightly packed young ladies showing how good they’ve been at their diet .... while beeing thin , I never liked to be squized in my clothes, still that kind of clothes´ is quite elegant, and suits Meghan very well .

    2. While she is very slender, her waist doesn’t have that hour glass nip in so if that is what you are expecting to see, clothes will not look “fitted”. They are though.

  15. Beautiful suit, very appropriate.....is it just me or is pink not really her color? To me she always ends up looking a bit too glossy or made up when she wears it. In black, navy, beige, white etc she looks stylish and modern, in pink she looks a bit “Dynasty” (a bad 80’s tv show). And of course the tights ruin the whole look (I know she has no choice). But overall a great look!

    1. I wonder if she isn’t too sure about wearing pink, and overcompensates a little with makeup. There is such a thing as too much bronzer! She shouldn’t worry; she’s blessed with a complexion that can make pretty much any color work for her.

I like this outfit a lot. She goes for a lot of asymmetric hemlines, it seems.

  17. LOL when I saw Harry in the group picture. He looked so happy and proud, like a pasha in his harem! I think Meghan looked impeccable for the occasion. Love the conservative pink suit with the draping on one side of the skirt to elevate it to an evening look. The shoes should satisfy the fashionistas in all of us! I have a feeling that Meghan is going to stick to neutrals when she is with the Queen. She will look beautiful but her outfit is not a story. I think she is going to tread a fine line between always being well dressed but not making her clothes the focus over her work. I don’t think she is going to ever completely satisfy the fans who follow her solely for fashion. I do not think she plans to be a clothes horse or the duchess of edgy fashion. I think she will wear colour but not when its the queens prerogative. I think she has stuck very much to her minimalist, but classic with a twist or with something fun. For example, the shirt dress had a fine fabric, and a handkerchief hem. Today’s suit had an A- line skirt with a drape, worn with killer party shoes. The design is the focus. The Queen has her established look, and she rarely deviates. With the Queen, the colour and pattern is the interest, along with her brooch, of course!

    1. Amen 21:05 I agree 100%. There is an article that I read which discussed what you are talking about in great detail. "I don’t think she is going to ever completely satisfy the fans who follow her solely for fashion."- I agree!
This is my conclusion too and to be honest I am very happy about this - a woman is more than the clothes she wears. The minimalist approach is a fashion long game which will serve her well in the long run and she can always dial it up if she wants to.

    2. Well said, Laureen. Her clothing choices have not changed. She has always been a classic dresser who leans to neutrals. She is very secure in her choices. She is not new to fine clothing, shoes and bags. Hats I believe are the only new venture in her growing closet. I love that she is not limiting herself to British designers. Good labels are second nature to her. She is not a novice in dressing. How lucky are we.

      Delete
    3. I also like that she & Kate each have a different pool of designers. Not that they won't crisscross some, but I think it helps that not only their styles are authentically different, but that it has lead them to different pools of "Go To" Designers. :)

    1. Kelly, maybe she is taking this as an "internship" or "training", kind of thing, many people go through this when they get hired at a new job, observing and learning then when the time comes, you do your own thing. So if she is taking this the same way she probably is observing and learning and it's good for the optics - it may not look as good if she is viewed as "taking over" without "learning the ropes".

  23. Love the shoes, like the suit, dislike the suit color. It reads beige to me, not pink. She always looks very pretty, regardless.

  24. This outfit IS similar to the Trouping outfit. And the side view is really wonderful---she looks so good. The outfits of the leaders are just spectacular, and it is appropriate for MM to be gorgeously monochrome to allow them to shine. Some of them are just terrific---I particularly like the young woman to MM's right and the woman in the beautiful orange-red gown who is standing behind MM on her right. The group shot is very special.

And more beautiful earrings. In one image, I saw some gold glinting off her right hand, so she may have one of those small spectacular little rings on, too.

  25. While I do agree with others that pink really is a lovely color for Meghan, I found the suit somewhat ill-fitting in some of the photographs. The shoes are to die for.

This was a great event and I look forward to reading more about what else the Duke and Duchess will do in this area.

  26. What a fabulous event; the young peoples' outfits are really the highlight here for me. I think the beige suit is quite boring/old looking and isn't a win for me, but those shoes are to die for. Love that this couple is out and about so much and brings passion and openness to their work and can't wait to see what they get up to for the rest of the year.

  27. Meghan's suit is light pink? I was convinced it was beige until I read that. She looks perfect for the occasion -- and I love that we see so many separates from her! The skirt is that classic Meghan element, the peplum detail and buttons are sharp and professional, and those shoes add just the right amount of evening elegance. I wasn't loving the belt at first, but now it seems to work nicely with the ensemble. The Duchess looks altogether unfussy and sophisticated!

Meghan seems to be taking everything in her stride. I wasn't sure if tonight would be an evening gown event or not, but that young leader's gorgeous red ball gown is amazing! I'm still holding out to see Meghan in a gown, hopefully on one of the tours?

Harry continues to look really happy. I've liked getting these events with Harry and Meghan together, then Meghan and the Queen, then all three. I'm looking forward to seeing Meghan work with the other royals, as well, although I'm not sure when that will happen. I'm still curious as to what her patronges will be. Charlotte, do you think those will be announced soon?

  28. For those who say her outfit is boring, I feel like they want to be entertained, why should women's outfits entertain people?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because many people follow royal women to see their fashion. They have every right to wear boring clothes, but then I’m not going to visit a blog dedicated to them and spend my free time following them.
I don’t live in a country that has a monarchy, so no royal woman has any impact on my real life. Therefore I’m going to pick which ones I follow on fashion blogs and why choose ones who aren’t interesting sartorially?

      Delete
    2. I respect your opinion Anna, thank goodness I do not follow Meghan because of her fashion only but interested in everything else that is going on with the event, having said that I do like her fashion choices very much- both before and after the wedding. She has been a royal for a month :) so I am enjoying all her choices now and look forward to the future ones. My next question, is maybe people can follow the male royals and be entertained by their suits? An example Prince Charles - he wears some very classy suits that I find interesting, that way women and men share the "part" to entertain with clothes and Harry can also wear something else not just the blue suit? I personally feel that women should not be left with the "burden" to "clothes entertain", just my opinion.

    3. I follow royal women because its interesting to see how they navigate the challenges and blessing of their lives. HM had the job unexpectedly thrust upon her. She served in the military during wartime! Imagine that today! Diana was a very, very young woman who I watched become a loving mother so unlike the other royals. To watch shy DIana become an advocate for HIV patients was so unusual in its day.

I love fashion and royal jewels, Oh My. But what they do and who they become is why I follow them. Amanda

Mr D, the boring comment I have read a lot on some other blogs, I tried to ask on those blogs but the answers I got were "that's what they signed up for" and "to preserve" the monarchy etc, some answers I will not repeat here. It's not just Meghan but also read some comments like that about Kate.

    6. I agree with Anna. I am on this blog largely for the same reasons. I can safely say that if Kate had not dressed so well in the months after her marriage, I would never have had more than a fleeting interest in the BRF. And would not have known nor cared about the young leaders awards. One thing leads to another in my case. I am still coming to terms with the idea of following an unknown person's life, or being emotionally invested in her. I am more comfortable with just having a look at what she is wearing, and that's what I am still doing here. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate the outstanding information of this blog about the events and their context!

    7. While Meghan maybe unknown to some, I knew her from Suits and was of her million instagram followers before she closed her instagram and the Tig and am enjoying her transition from Hollywood attire to Duchess. I am waiting to see what causes/charities she will be a patron of. I also like Meghan's style, chic and modern with a twist thrown in somewhere, so am happy on this blog. I do not go to the Kate's blogs because while Kate looks nice I am not interested in her style.

    8. Women in the military in the US sometimes have a tough time being accepted and valued, even in these modern times. This is not true in other countries- I am thinking of Israel where everyone must serve. That country is in a constant state of war. Wartime completely changes perspective. Everyone contributed in some way during WWII. Not to demonstrate loyalty and helpfulness would have caused criticism. People did so in many different ways. Some collected scrap metal while others had victory gardens. Princess Elizabeth's being photographed working on a military vehicle was a reflection of the spirit of the times. However honestly meant, this image was good PR and remains a part of public memory, just as HM's 21st birthday speech.

Times and circumstances have changed. I cannot imagine Meghan working on a jeep as a member of the military. The spirit beginning to move minds and emotions at this time is inclusiveness and, beyond tolerance, acceptance. THAT is the image Meghan projects and why I read and comment on this blog.

Otherwise, Amanda, I am 100% with you--and lovely comment.

  29. Meghan looks nice, completely appropriate and great hair. However, it’s another boring ensemble, which I’m guessing is her goal for now.

And I’m seriously over the constant beige, cream, invisible pink she’s been wearing since the wedding. I really hope she’s over this phase by the October tour because having 3 non-colour outfits per day non-stop for two weeks will be too much.

    1. I don't blame her for playing it safe with colors right now. She'll get more comfortable with time. And I fail to see what's so "boring" about the outfit either. It's completely elegant and appropriate for the occasion.

    2. Just because something is elegant and appropriate doesn’t mean it’s not boring. Quite the opposite I’d say. The more classic the outfit the higher the chance it will be boring, especially if there are never any real colours or patterns involved.

I do not really understand what boring’ means, regarding a person’s clothes .... I really appreciate to be « bored » by such elegance ! Even if she does wear quite the same style of clothes and shades (which she probably likes) there is always a detail which makes the day different ! I would rather be bored by seeing her wearing all the rainbow colours in a week .....

Thank you so much, Charlotte. Such a great event! I loved watching the ceremony, what a wonderful display of all those various types of clothes, so colourful and fun! And HM is just incredible! I loved how she treated everyone with interest and care, she is such a motherly figure, and so dignified! Loved how everyone wanted to tell her something. These people will never forget meeting the Queen.
Meghan looked really nice and elegant and I think this was a great way for her to see the variety and richness of the Commonwealth. Harry looked so happy to be there with her. I enjoyed his speech and how HM smiled when he said "you're stuck with me" :) I

  33. I absolutely love the whole look today. It is the essence of Meghan the Duchess I think. The blush coloured suit looks lovely on her, the design is classic yet it has some interesting detail. The shoes are just fantastic. Is there any chance we could get an ID on her pantyhose Charlotte? They look AMAZING, I want some!
I also think this is the type of event that Harry and Meghan will LOVE to expand on in the future. It is where their common interest in supporting people and lifting people up will bring so much joy to people in the years to come. They both shine with happiness and engagement in the people they meet, it is inspiring.

  36. She looks beautiful, her dress is perfect. Similar to other dresses she has worn but I love the detail on this. It must be very daunting putting together clothes for all these public events. I kind of understand why she is wearing similar styles and colors, she is getting used to Royal life and dressing for it. Easing herself in with her clothes. She doesn’t want to look too showy or attention seeking.
Someone else mentioned that her clothes are very expensive, I also thought that and wonder if she will have to throw in so high street brands to mix it up. It would be nice to see her picking one established British brand and using them regularly. Sinead

    1. Yes, I agree. I think her summer neutral is the pale pink and the cream she wore on the train trip. She seems to be more comfortable in neutrals and it certainly is a way not to compete with the queen. I loved this suit and wish the Trooping the Color outfit had this type of neckline and sleeve. This neckline seems to be her thing and it looks lovely on her. I also agree that her clothes and jewelry are very expensive. I am wondering if this was her standard as an actress or whether she feels more confident in more expensive clothing as she is establishing her role in the royal family. The shoes are just gorgeous and the jewelry perfect!

I agree, Christine , she has a beautifull neckline, as we say in France ‘port de tΓͺte’ like a dancer , and she knows what cloth enhance it ! Same for her very thin ankles, her skirts are always the good length to draw attention to them .... she definitely knows to choose her clothes, she feels comfortable wearing them , she makes them alive, if I may say so .

Wow, Nicole, with such background, no wonder you are so fashion-aware! :) I also like classical pieces, they almost never disappoint. And "less" is sometimes "more". I agree with you about trouser suits being elegant. Not long ago, I watched "Downton Abbey" and in Series 1 one of the characters, Lady Sybil, makes a HUGE decision and wears a trouser suit for the first time which is quite shocking for her family but I believe her sisters envy her a little! (You have probably seen it? If you have, I'm sure you appreciated the costumes...)

  39. Meghan's makeup has been mentioned as being a little heavier then usual. Considering this was a nighttime event it seems perfect. Meghan is still sporting the tan glow from her honeymoon trip or is it from the sun of Africa this past weekend. If true it has been reported that Harry was there for the weekend. I can't imagine his going without taking Meghan with him considering his love for the country. They are both very good at slipping in and out of the country unnoticed.

  44. Meghan looks lovely although I'll admit this outfit at the end of the year won't get my vote as a favorite. It's the skirt that puzzles me - maybe because it needs to fit tighter on the left? I would however love to see the top with a pair of slim ivory trousers.

What a fun event. It was smart of Meghan to wear something subdued - in color and classic styling - as those award winners all really shine. Love the group shot.

Looking forward to their Ireland visit. I was in Dublin in March so it'll bring back memories for me. Only there 4 days so looking forward to seeing where they'll go as I didn't get to everything but also didn't know which places were the top sites.

  47. You know how Kate often has a fabulous outfit ruined by boring shoes? I think Meghan has the opposite problem -- fabulous shoes that just need an outfit with a bit more ... flash? I know she's supposed to look royal and elegant but her love of neutral suits is like Kate's ever-present nude pumps.

I also think that she needs to get tights/hose that are a bit thinner and more opaque. Right now it looks like she's wearing rather thick dark hose.

She mentioned how she got the chance to meet Meghan after and Meghan confirmed that she had noticed the young lady's nerves and had purposefully tried to reassure her.

    1. What a touching moment to add to this thread. Without your mention of it 4:35 many of us wouldn't have been privy to the information. I hope Charlotte can find that and post it. Thank you.

As I read the comments regarding Meghan's colour and fit choices, something occurs to me. I wonder whether Meghan (who has been through a whirlwind of life-altering changes in the months following her engagement and the weeks since her marriage isn't maintaining her usual comfort zone (albeit with more bespoke rather than off the rack items) with her clothing. Whether that is conscious or unconscious on her part, clothes can console or energize or defend a person.

I know that when I have had to take center stage I have chosen clothes which supported my needs and the occasion. I had a fantastic pink suit for times that I had to deal with grumpy men within sniffing distance of retirement and not about to buy into any new ideas. A blonde in pink disarmed them before I said a word. No threat. But in the end some of the best post session evaluations came from that quarter.

I said this of Catherine when I started following the DK blog. I think it's appropriate to repeat it regarding Meghan. Yes, we are entitled to our opinions about her choices and entitled to share them without snark. However, there is more than enough sister-shaming in the world. Meghan is not our dolly.

    2. Lol, I love how you dealt, with fashion, a potentially difficult situation Philly!!! I think we all have a favorite color, style or particular item that we came back to time and again because of the way it makes us (or others) feel when we wear it. If anyone wanted to peruse my closet you'd find clothes of almost all the same color and style as I know what I like and what works for me and my body, if most of us can do that I don't know why Meghan can't.

The Duchess stays true to her minimalist fashion style, which is ok with me. I admire what the Queen has accomplished through the years with the Commonwealth Countries. There is a lot of work still to be done and the Royal Family stands committed to progress in these countries. Thanks, Charlotte. I enjoyed all of it.

  52. Meghan looked lovely tonight. I don't think her suit looked ill-fitting. Fabric moves. That doesn't make it ill-fitting. She doesn't wear skin tight clothing that looks as though it will cut off her circulation. I also don't think wearing hosiery ruins an outfit. She looked well groomed. I realize bare legs is the norm these days so please don't jump on me for applauding her look - even if it's a requirement and not a choice.

Her shoes are beautiful but I cringe thinking of her poor feet in 30 or 40 years. Walking on pointy-toed toothpicks is something I did for years and my feet and back are now paying the price. If I had to do it over would I change? Probably not. I'd probably want to run out and buy those beautiful shoes for myself! :)

I too would like to see a bit of color on Meghan but if you look back over the years her personal style was looser clothing in basic colors. She did wear the occasional purple, wine, and brighter blue but mostly it was black, gray, navy, beige, and white. I guess we will just have to resign ourselves to her neutral choices. Perhaps she will have a more colorful wardrobe on the October trip when she will be the shining star that people come to see.

To see all these young people representing their countries & cultures with pride - the energy I felt coming from them just by watching the ceremony - it was so uplifting!!! Day in, day out we are hearing, watching and reading all these horror stories from around the world - this was a welcome break for me!!
Watching Harry & Meghan AND Her Majesty interacting with those young people was SHEER DELIGHT. HM making sure she exchanged a few words with every recipient - I was in awe. Her famous smile must make those people´s heart melt instantly...

Meghan looked stylish&elegant. This is just her nature. I guess she could be dressed in rags and still emanate style and elegance... She seems to be VERY happy with her life & it shows which is just great to see... (Harry as well, btw..) :-)))

  54. What a brilliant event and what an amazing array of clothing from around the commonwealth.

I loved the outfit tonight, very elegant with some edgy touches like the draped skirt and dramatic shoe. Part of me thinks I’d preferred if this had been swopped with Trooping of the colour outfit but just a casual thought. I get that she’s keeping things fairly neutral for now - She’s beginning to build up an impressive wardrobe of very expensive stuff at the minute which will stand her in good stead over the next few years as repeats - it will be interesting to see how she does on her 2 day tour of Ireland and whether there’s a focus on less expensive / high street couture?

  55. Funnily I just went back up to look at her outfit again to see if it hit me as pink? In the pic with her smiling & shaking one of the guest's hand, I was struck by how much the photo made me think of when Will & Kate met the Obama's after they had just returned from their Honeymoon & Kate was wearing a beige/pink bandage wrap dress? The tone of the garment, the glow of the skin, the hair..... I know it's just a coincidence, but it's wild.... at least to me! :) To me it's funny how the brothers both fell in love with girls who look similar, yet different, have so many similar wonderful qualities, yet again in such different ways & styles.... & while both are compassionate & empathic like their mother, they are both so strong in their own sense of self, quite unlike Diana! Just some musing that came over me! :)

    1. The other thing that I've been thinking about- Kate dressed in creams, whites and greys in the early months of her marriage too. Very "bridey" and youthful, and in stark contrast to the colorful closet of HM. The queen once said of her colorful wardrobe "I have to be seen to be believed" and it is definitely easier to see a bright color on a grey day in a throng of people. The light colors and neutral palette suit both Meghan and Kate, and it may be their way of blending in and letting HM have the spotlight while they learn the art of "duchessing". I thought Meghan was very pretty today, and her taste runs a bit more continental than Kate's. I tire of seeing Harry and Will in the same old dark blue suit. How many blue suits do these men have? I hunger for a Prince of Wales check suit or a proper English tweed sportjacket from these handsome men. Have they heard of dark grey pinstripe?

  57. Love seeing Meghan on an engagement with HM. With out doubt Meghan looked lovely this evening, my only qualm, the skirt looked a couple of sizes too big for her, and the asymmetrical makes it look even more oversized. I do like the simplicity of how she dresses. When the royal ladies are on duty, they should have a staple style, that looks professional and doesn't take coverage away from the event they're attending. Meghan is still finding her own particular work style, and like all other royal ladies she'll find a style that works for her and something she feels comfortable wearing.

  59. Meghan’s crossed legs in the group photo did stand out, but I don’t think crossed legs is tacky. There is a shot of Kate and Meghan at the Royal Foundation forum where they are watching the video, and both of them had their legs crossed and unslanted, and they looked very relaxed and comfortable. As has been noted, Meghan seems to always wear longer skirts, so when she crosses her legs, there is no modesty problem. I read an article recently about Kate’s first outing with the Queen, and her suit had a very short skirt, and she didn’t cross her legs while seated. It seems that Kate’s standard skirt length for daywear is usually above the knee. Crossed knees is s very comfortable position, and I imagine Meghan may still have to be mentally reminding herself about the protocol. She’ll have countless sitting on stage moments in her future!

    1. According to Daily Mail William Hanson "etiquette fashion guru" , she did not break protocol infact Camilla and the Queen prefers this crossed slant. I dislike it when people try to hold Meghan to a different standard.

      Delete
    2. I so agree anon 15:54! Yesterday it was all about how Meghan is now curling her hair like Kate! Is Kate the first woman in history to curl her hair? The constant comparisons have gotten soooo ridiculous, Meghan can't do, say or receive anything without some comparison to what Kate's done, said or received and of course Kate's has to be better. I've really had to cut down on the articles I read about Meghan (not here but elsewhere) because it's become such a competition and apparently Kate must win every time. I can't imagine that either women are thrilled about this, Kate especially must be mortified that her new sister-in-law is constantly being put down in order to bring her up. And poor Meghan any time she wears something it's being picked apart and compared to her new sister-in-law, pretty soon she'll start wearing potato sacks and just be done with it.

Sorry for the rant but wow Meghan's only been a royal for a month and 7 days
      and it's already depressing.

      Delete
    3. A lot of the comparisons to Kate are quite frankly thinly disguised racism. Kate breaks a lot of the imagined protocol rules too. She's taken her coat off indoors! She's gone to events without wearing hose! She's even (gasp!) crossed her legs at the knees! But all of a sudden Kate is "classy" and a "real royal." The dailymail is particularly vicious.

But the thing is (and here's something the protocol watchers are not talking about) is that Meghan's already taken on quite a heavy workload. You work more, there's more chance you might accidentally break some protocol rule. And in that case, the only person who should be complaining is the Queen. As the Queen has gone the opposite way and included Meghan in MORE royal events, I can only assume that whatever "protocol" rules are being broken or not broken pale next to the fact that with her great people skills and approachability HM finds Meghan to be a good Royal ambassador. Case closed.

    2. It's so stupid and contrived. The poor girl seemed to accidentally sit normally with her legs crossed and then they bounced into duchess form, like she was wearing an electric prod at her knees. I'm sure she is having fun, though, and ignored the papers.

  61. How is this outfit boring? It's a modern day to evening suit, although I see what others have said about how this one could swap with her Trooping look very easily. The shoes are spectacular, a perfect evening touch. Wish I were young again, to wear those skyscrapers. With the Queen and many guests in bright frocks, Meghan looks just right in the pale colors she favors. Her beautiful skin becomes her best accessory. The soft loose waves suit her. Her husband looks happy and proud of her.

  62. After watching Meghan's style the past 8 months, I honestly think she just prefers a more relaxed fit than, say, Kate. I keep thinking about her wedding gown and how loose and un-structured it was, and how casual her makeup was. Maybe that's how she feels more comfortable. She looks stunning today but seems perhaps not as comfortable as done up as she is. Could totally be projecting. I find I am still kind of disappointed about her dress and her look on her wedding day...I know it's silly, it wasn't MY wedding day. But anyway. I am really enjoying seeing her style evolve and getting to know the kind of Duchess she is going to be. :)

  65. 🌸 awh.❤️ thanks you guys. I’m sorry. I should have explained some. my bad. I have been feeling a tug to ministry to help more with local missions and with the older members of my family. And I also have been feeling a need to just do some introspection in the process. I am feeling such a huge unction to be of help more than I have been. I will surely miss ya’ll very much. It wasn’t an easy decision but yet it is the right one for me at this time. And I didn’t want to leave without saying goodbye. Ya’ll have helped me grow lots as a person. 😊 (Thanks. I needed that.) And we have all been through a lot together if you think about it.❤️
BIG hugs and love to you all. You are all VERY special. Again, I will certainly miss you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    2. Surfer Girl – I hope you will squeeze time to continue on your interest of people, fashion, music, wedding planning, and yes your very own critical thinking will be missed. It will spice up the project you will be undertaking. For that, no better place than where you have the base, right on this blog. I wish you stop by at least for major issues on this blog, or to share your thoughts now and then. Stay well and good; I will personally miss your gentle spirit. May God be with you.

    3. By the way to have the nudge for a calling is a very special time of a gift offered from a greater source which most likely you have connected to ( as in the creator, God, guardian angel,or / and internal and external forces). I wish you to continue the prayer and seize on this “opportunity” with wise guidance and council from those who love you, and you love and trust. The introspection will definitely be a part of it. I already feel inspired by your plans.

Not to be a pessimist, many people want to do well, or feel the calling, and not all find it 100% to their expectation. Just as in life, there are challenges in answering a calling. I believe you will meet the challenges and find the solutions and spread the good within you to make a difference and find greater happiness. At least you will try it, and that is a courageous step whichever way it will turn out.

I hope you will plan an equilibrium of what you will be doing while also looking out for your own well-being. If you are happy and healthy, you will answer your calling with patience, gratitude, peace, and special joy. Pardon me for being selfish to have your comments here; seven years is a long time. At least say, Hi, now and then.

  66. Just a quick question that will undoubtedly reveal my fashion ignorance. This outfit was described by several as "minimalist." How can a dress with multiple large buttons, a peplum, and a swag side drape be minimalist? I think her green engagement interview dress might qualify and the black pantsuit she wore for an engagement. The wedding dress, certainly--but with the enormously intricate veil and tiara added? Hardly minimalist. I think Rachel from Suits was more minimalist than Meghan has been, at least in the last six-eight months.

  67. SG - I just opened this blog only to find your post here. I haven't followed closely here. With all due respect to your decision, I will miss you. I hope you will stop by from time to time. I wish you all the best, and I hope all will be well. Happy to have known you believe in prayer. I do too; may your optimism see you through bright ways of each day of your life.

What a great cause. I'm sure this is an event that Harry and Meghan will enjoy in the future. Such young bright people. On the the outfit - I'm not a huge fan and I think it needed one more fitting for the top.

  71. It looks like their trip to Ireland won't be a full two days if they're attending a service and balcony appearance on the 10th, in fact they might not be in Ireland any earlier than evening time. Any thoughts on this Charlotte?

    1. Hello Lauri,

I'm guessing they will arrive in Dublin mid afternoon. I know there's quite a packed schedule for the trip, with news they are attending the RAF Centenary celebrations, I'm guessing we'll see the bulk of the itinerary during day two, however I do expect at least 2-3 engagements on the 10th in Dublin including a summer garden party at the British Ambassador's Residence.

    2. Thanks Charlotte! It looks like you'll be quite busy these two days, make sure to stay hydrated!! :)

  73. Surfer Girl, I have finally found and read your explanation for your references to leaving us, which I noticed on DKB. Like all the others who have commented, I understand your wish to become more involved in the real life around you. I often think the Internet can be a substitute for that. But, used wisely, it can also be complementary to our place in society. I hope you will join us now and then. We have become a sort of family with shared interests. The tenor and tone of these blogs will be different! People come and go, but there is a core of regular visitors who add so much to our understanding of Kate and Meghan and their families and activities. You have been a main contributor, with wit and charm and wisdom. I wish you every good purpose and result in the work you are undertaking, and I hope you will take from here inspiration to contribute to a better life for those you serve. Since I know you are in San Diego, I can't help hoping that your work will contribute to relieving some of the suffering in that area. My best wishes to you!

  75. Hello Charlotte,
This is not a request, or a suggestion to add to your already very busy times of running two popular blogs. I notice you don't have the google translator any longer for both blogs. It is not perfect, still for the international readership households you have, some members who don't read the English language might have made some sense from the "Google Translator" to read your posts and the comments. Your photo journalism of how you connect events to historical images is consistently wonderful and makes a visual translation of the stories you want to send. In that aspect, your blog complements what cannot be read due to language gap.

You certainly are like family.❤️πŸ€— This wasn’t an easy decision but my full focus needs to be elsewhere right now. Hopefully my absence here will be just for a season. I hadn’t thought about that before. The Lord will let me know.❤️😊

You all will continue to be in my daily devotionals.
Yes, 😊, I have been praying for us all here and for the boys and their families for years, lol. And, I believe prayer is a GOOD thing, a VERY GOOD thing, yeh?).πŸ˜‰
No way am I forgetting you. You are all sweetly unforgettable.❤️❤️❤️

Keep me in your prayers also and pray for safety, wisdom, favor and strength for me and my “team” and that we continue to hear His direction clearly. πŸ™❤️😊

Surfer girl, I wish you all the very, very best for your journey!! May God be with you & bless you...
"Love others like you love yourself" says Jesus. Don´t forget to be there for yourself and get some "unwind time" - Meghan´s inspiring journey is a source of inspiration for my humble self - so maybe she and this wonderful blog here can be&remain a source of inspiration, strength and much needed positive energy on your journey as well.
"God presents himself in mysterious ways..." - I´m sure our MAM blog can be one of these ways for you! So don´t be a stranger, pop in every now and then & recharge your batteries.... Lots of love & hugs from Germany!!

  77. Okay, Surfer Girl, I am a tad confused about your good bye. I know you post often and I'm sure that takes up time, but do you really have to leave this blog…like total withdrawal? Your mission to help others is noble and I'm sure it is a spiritual calling. But even doing this fine work, you need a diversion from time to time. A few years ago I was in Africa doing volunteer work. I had my tablet and at the end of a long, emotionally charged day, I enjoyed coming onto WKW. It was a little bit of familiarity with familiar commentators and it in no way detracted from the work I was doing. I didn't comment much during that time, but I did occasionally chime in. Perhaps you could do the same. At the very least have a look at the photos on WKW and MAM and say "hello" just so we know you are okay. I wish you every success in this new chapter of your life. May God be with you and bring your peace.

    1. I was going to say ... I respect your wishes to lead a more spiritual life but even spiritual leaders like Pope Francis need downtime! I feel like your happy, enthusiastic posts will be missed on these blogs as very often it's easy to read the negativity in the presses and think that this is the only public feedback. I feel like you give "royal watchers" a good name as you are always happy and positive. So I respect your wishes but also wish it didn't have to be such a sudden, permanent break.

  79. Hello first of all to talk about the outfit I found Meghan for this very classy and distinguished event the fact that she wears neutral does not bother me and besides why would she even bother me? his goal is not that his dressing I like, I think given his age career she must I am sure know what suits him or not and wear the style of clothing that pleases him. Of course, I love fashion and Meghan's wardrobe and accessories make me more than dream but for me it's not the main thing anymore. I can not wait to see her different patronages and especially what I love during her outings is to see her interact with her husband and his entourage and all the people who met him besides those who saw him during his engagements were warm and interested. For me to see the duchess in action is the most important

  80. Something I meant to say earlier-regarding leg-crossing. I am sure there are photos of HM and other royals with crossed legs. I think the point is that this particular photograph was meant as a formal, commemorative portrait that those young leaders will no doubt treasure and have displayed in their homes. The crossed-leg position is somewhat casual for such a photo, but it also disrupts the line; in scanning the photo one's eye will go to the odd man out, so to speak. I am sure Becca the cinematographer understands this. I doubt there are many photos of HM with crossed legs in such a photo.
However, as with many rules, both written and unwritten, they must apply to a broad variety of people. It would be more fair to apply the etiquette guidelines (which is all most of them are) on a case-by-case basis. What looks pleasing and appropriate for one may not appear so for another.
I think Meghan's crossing her legs at the knee with a modest slant is attractive. I am sure the honorees whom Meghan met would realise that she did not mean any disrespect. There is a photo in this post that pictures her with legs crossed at the thigh, but her dress is a modest length and I think she can get away with it in a casual, non-posed format.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
