Harry and Meghan Attend Prince Louis' Christening!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the christening of Prince Louis at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, this afternoon.

The couple joined guests at the private christening including Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Middleton family and godparents and their spouses. William and Kate chose six godparents for their eleven-week-old son. Kate's cousin Lucy Middleton and close friends Nicholas van Cutsem, Guy Pelly, Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, Laura Meade and Hannah Gillingham Carter. Buckingham Palace announced this morning the Queen and Prince Philip would not be in attendance. They added it was mutually agreed some time ago.

A video of guests arriving.

In March, months before the Royal wedding, Meghan was also baptised at the Chapel Royal. Harry and Meghan were joined by Charles and Camilla for the 45 minute service. Her baptism was followed immediately by her confirmation, meaning she would be able to join Harry at Holy Communion. The Mail on Sunday reported "The Chapel Royal choir of six Gentlemen-in-Ordinary and ten Children of the Chapel – the oldest continuous musical organisation in the world – performed throughout the service." The chapel also hosted Prince George's christening in 2013.

Prince Louis wore the Royal Christening Robe. The robe, of fine Honiton lace lined with white satin, was made in 1841 for the christening of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Victoria, Princess Royal. The original gown was subsequently worn for all Royal christenings, including The Queen, her children and her grandchildren, until the youngest of The Queen's eight grandchildren, James, Viscount Severn. The Queen commissioned Angela Kelly to make a hand-made replica of the Royal Christening Robe in order to preserve the original. James, Viscount Severn, was the first member of the Royal Family to wear this replica gown at his christening at the private chapel at Windsor Castle on 19th April 2008. Harry and Meghan's children will wear the robe for their christenings.

The service was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The Lily Font and water from the River Jordan were used during the baptism. Following the service, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted a private tea at Clarence House. Guests enjoyed slices of christening cake, which is a tier taken from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding cake. The official christening portraits were taken by Matt Holyoak, we can expect to see them released later this week.

The Duchess looked elegant in a bespoke olive green Ralph Lauren dress for the christening. It is thought the piece is bespoke.

The eagle-eyed Perth Fashion notes Meghan's dress is similar to the the Lauren Ralph Lauren Boat Neck Jersey Dress. The piece is on sale in emerald green and navy for $93 at Macys. Meghan's dress is a bespoke piece - it is more fitted and has belt loops.

Meghan wore a matching olive green Stephen Jones hat.

Meghan's pumps are thought to be a Sergio Rossi style (with thanks to What Meghan Wore).

Meghan wore her Galanterie de Cartier earrings.

Meghan completed the look with green accessories.

And Meghan wore her hair in a sleek ponytail.

In other news, contrary to reports in reputable media outlets, Harry and Meghan are not undertaking a joint visit to the Netherlands later this month. Harry will pay a two-day solo visit primarily to attend the 2018 International AIDS Conference. Meanwhile, we have an incredibly busy couple of days coming up on the blog. Tomorrow morning, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will join The Queen and members of the royal family for a service at Westminster Abbey to mark the centenary of the Royal Air Force. The royals will gather on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to view a special flypast. Afterwards, Harry and Meghan will attend a reception where they will meet meet RAF servicemen and women. The service begins at 10.30 am.

In the afternoon, the couple will travel to Dublin for a number of engagements. The Irish Mirror reports the following on the couple's itinerary:

Tuesday, July 10

  • Dublin Airport - The Royals will arrive at the airport where they will be greeted by the waiting media.
  • Department of the Taoiseach - Meghan and Harry will spend some time with Leo Varadkar on Merrion Street.
  • Glencairn House - The newlyweds will enjoy a summer garden party at the British Ambassdor's headquarters.

Wednesday July 11

  • Aras an Uachtarain – They will start their day with a meeting with President Michael D Higgins.
  • Trinity College – Meghan and Harry will view the historic Book of Kells.
  • Croke Park – The Royals will enjoy the Gaelic Sports Festival in GAA HQ.
  • Famine Memorial – The newlyweds will visit the famine memorial at Dublin's docklands.
  • EPIC – They'll then tour the Irish Emigration Museum.
  • DogPatch – Meghan and Harry will learn about tech start-ups and meet young people involved in coding workshops.

See you all in the morning :)

  7. I have a feeling Meghan is going to be one of the royal family's great hat wearers, right up there with Camilla and Sophie. She can really rock a hat!! Noticed she seems to be wearing her hair in a pony-tail, a totally unexpected and happy touch, imo. She always surprises!

    2. I have to ask, do you know why she'd bring gloves? I mean it's the middle of summer and I've heard that London is pretty hot right now. While I loved the look of her carrying gloves, they just don't make much sense to me.

    3. Maybe she's copying Maxima, Lauri. I agree; it's a bit warm for leather gloves, but they're olive! They look fab and they'd look amazing if she wore them.

Just wait. She might bring opera length evening gloves back! I would swoon.

  12. Another American designer. There are so many talented designers in the UK, I wish she would support the local fashion more, she is part of the royal family, representing the country now.

The dress itself is nice and flattering, but the colour is not what I would choose for a summer engagement of this nature.

    1. I am both delighted & disappointed. Delighted in the style of hat & disappointed in yet another boat neck style dress. Color is more for fall, & why the gloves? But am pleased to see her looking so "British".

      Delete
    2. She has such innate style and I am a great believer that colours are not dictated by season but by the wearer and Meghan sure rocked this Olive Green ensemble. Gloves are a very classy accessory which are seeing a revival in royal houses all over Europe. In this case they are decorative but when dealing with the public I think you can only shake so many hands without feeling grubby or tacky.

      Delete
    3. Meghan was very careful about wearing almost exclusively British and Commonwealth designers all through the engagement. I suspect Meghan finally feels the freedom with the wedding over to mix in other designers. I have little doubt that given the attention to detail Meghan showed with her clothes during the engagement that the UK designers will get their day again. Given all the American money that flowed into Windsor for the wedding surely Meghan can finally wear a few American designers.

  21. Meghan's outfit was perfect--head to toe to fingertips! However,--and I know I'm going to be crucified for this!--I am getting ready for at least one repeat sometime, somewhere. Have we ever seen the same outfit twice? Don't get me wrong: I love seeing all her brilliant choices, but for the sake of humility and a touch of empathy with the rest of us mortals, maybe she could manage a second wear of something. I'd love to see again that navy dress that she wore with her mom the day before the wedding (We got only a glimpse after all), as well as the garden party pink and white, one of my favorites!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I mean it's been less than a year and the seasons have changed and the events thus far have been different in style. I believe we'll see repeats in clothes (and technically a number of the quotes she wore while engaged were repeats) and not just accessories eventually but I feel it's a bit soon for this pressure.

I do not mean to crucify you with this comment BTW. It's just I've seen the others asking the same and this is my opinion on it.

      Delete
    2. Time, folks. Time. We live too much in a 'click' world where the expectations are for instant replays of anything. She's not yet been married 8 weeks!

      Delete
    3. I agree El. Meghan just got married not even two months ago and is still building her "royal" wardrobe plus as you said most of the events she's attended since the wedding have been big royal family events that most of the ladies wear new outfits to. I believe that once she announces her charities and starts attending those types of engagements we'll see more re-wears.

      Delete
    4. You are both correct about the change of seasons. I hope you are correct about a few repeats as time passes, too. Indeed, I have liked most of her choices so much that I want a second look!!! (: (:

      Delete
    5. Hi Lynn, I too want a second look, in full, of the blush dress she wore to the Trooping of the Color! I did see a photo of the cream dress she wore on her away day with the Queen but without the cape and is was fabulous! Of course, I can't find the photo, it was the only shot of her and Queen without their coats/capes on and it was probably taken either right before or right after lunch. Gosh now that I'm thinking about it there are several outfits I'd like to see again!! :)

      Delete
    6. I like this look. It's very simple and elegant and the ponytail is a nice touch. The green *could* be seen as autumnal, but it suits Meghan.

But I do agree with you, Lynn; one recycle thrown in would represent the humility you speak of. I understand that she's building a wardrobe, but these outfits are not inexpensive. And I don't believe that recycling a dress, for example, and coordinating it with different accessories represents pressure; coming up with a completely NEW look from head to toe...yes. ;-)

I like olive/khaki as a neutral, even in the summer. I love the hat, and I have been hoping for a low ponytail. She looks great.

  23. She looks very pretty. Love the gloves. Is this the first time we have seen her with gloves? I am not a big fan of what looks like a raglan sleeve style and I also think the boat neck is a bit off, maybe too wide or with the sleeves, not sure. The hat is gorgeous. Love the narrow belt and waist line on this dress.

  24. Take away the hat, change the color of the shoes and bag, and gloves? It’s a very flattering dress and the color although unusual is unobtrusive, which I think is what she is aiming for. I have come to the conclusion that I probably won’t be blown away by anything she wears at more formal events, just waiting for trip to Ireland to see more of her personal style.

I like the dress but not the color, at least not for a joyous occasion such as today's.

  26. Another massive home run for me from Meghan today. I just adore everything about this look: the colour, the big hat, the simple, unfussy design - classy and fabulously elegant. This has so much potential for repeat wear - Trooping the Colour, Ascot, garden parties, tours to Australia(?!) I must admit I welled up a bit when I saw her today - something about the big hat, the belted shift dress and the matchy-matchy accessories took me right back to the glory days of the late Princess Diana. Long may it continue!

I'd also forgotten that the RAF flypast was tomorrow; thanks for the reminder Charlotte. I seriously can't wait now - Meghan's on a roll!

  27. Meghan looks lovely, although for such a happy event, the colour of her outfit is drab. I guess after the wowser yellow of a few days ago, many colours would be drab. Don't get me wrong, I do like this colour on Meghan but I wonder about photographs when Kate, Camilla, and the Middletons are in pastels, if this olive green dress will not quite blend. Shoes and purse are a good compliment in a similar colour…but why on why, in the summer heat, would Meghan bring gloves? I bet she never owned gloves growing up in California.

    1. The Queen has gloves to royal ascot, it's not a weather thing it's a class thing imo

    2. I noticed Camilla also carried her gloves in her hands to the garden party that Meghan attended after their wedding. And I think I've seen her do that a few times at other events.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous 23.37, I guess the gloves in the summer, are like a British man carrying an umbrella, when no rain is predicted. Not sure it is about class; it seems a bit ostentatious to me. Although anything Her Majesty does in okay by me. For myself, I love to have my hands free, so I'd never be holding something with no real function.

      Delete
    4. For we who grew up wearing gloves, gloves are made in fabrics for winter, summer and spring. Gloves in summer are often worn for church functions in white cotton or pastels to match clothing for formal functions. Gloves come to the wrist, midway to the elbow , elbow and opera length. It is not uncommon to wear opera length with strapless formal gowns.

  28. I love this look, I think it’s beautiful. The color is not unusual in summer, I think it’s seeing it head to two that is different.I'm very excited for the Irish trip. They are so busy over the next few days. The second day in Ireland is super busy, they seem to be trying to fit in everything we have to offer in one day.i think it would be better to do less and spend more time but I guess we will see how it works out. There is a lot of curious excitement here in Ireland, I think it’s viewed as a celebrity visit rather than an official visit if that makes sense. The weather is beautiful so she should be able to wear some lovely dresses. Sinead

    1. Anon 20:02, I think you are correct about the color. I actually have summer silk shirts in this color but you are right that i usually wear them with a white or khaki color skirt or pant. It probably is seeing her in the color from head to toe that makes it seem a bit more "Fall" like. It is a pretty green.

  29. I like the look. I like the colour. It's a muted mossy green of a shaded lawn, a colour that transitions well from late spring through summer and into autumn. I like the sheerness of the hat and the tone on tone accessories. That doesn't happen without careful deliberation.

I'm especially glad that Meghan's style is reviving the boat neck just as Michelle Obama brought attention back to dresses at a time when you could hardly find one that wasn't a Mother of the Bride item or some cotton caftan out of the tropics. These classics work well on me and I look forward to sparking up the wardrobe in the coming years.

  30. The dress is nice and I’m glad it’s a color, but I just don’t personally like this olive green, probably because I look awful in it. Meghan looks good in it. I would like a different hat. It looks kind of sad. I love the sleeves on the dress.

  31. I think we will see Meghan wear many British designers, and often, as time passes. Also in the same vein, we will see repeats of outfits and accessories. She supported numerous British labels in her engagement events. In fact, and I could be wrong, but she wore mostly British and designers and labels, with some Canadian designer(Commonwealth) thrown in. Two British female designers were worn on her wedding day. She has been engaged and married for eight months, and we have seen her dress through three different seasons, each requiring different types of clothing. Meghan has done numerous events in the short time she has been officially Harry's partner, and so it may seem that she is extravagant and loathe to repeat, but I don't think the opportunities have been presented yet. She is still in the process of acquiring a royal working wardrobe. I'm sure Meghan knew what worked and suited her as an actress and celebrity, but what works for a royal may need some tweaking of her style. I think she has stuck to her style, which is spare and elegant, and is probably making minor and necessary adaptations for a satisfactory "duchess" wardrobe. BTW, I think Meghan's style has a French sensibility, and often draws comments about her look being "unfinished." Also, I think while she was in suits, she was always dressed in form-fitting and sometimes tight outfits, which brings on comments about her clothes being too big or too baggy, or ill-fitted. As Duchess Meghan, she is not going to look the same as Lawyer Rachel. Meghan's last two outfits have been colorful, and we have generally drawn the conclusion that she wears neutrals when she is with the queen and other royal women who outrank her. It's my feeling that Meghan's wardrobe has been carefully considered, and that she would always seek necessary input and advice.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I had a little wobble because she was not wearing white, cream, or baby blue, but then I saw one of the godmothers was in red. The olive is a "neutral" color and she looks terrific. She has to walk a fine line between not being the center of attention and dressing to show respect for the occasion. Her ponytail was terrific! And she really is getting into hats now.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, yes, one godmother did wear red, but the godparents are to in the official photos with the royal family and the Middletons. I think Meghan's dress is going to look drab along side what the other women are wearing.

      Delete
    2. My post above should say, "The godparents are NOT in the official photos." I'm having one of those days!

  33. I love this outfit and the matching accessories really tie it all together! I also love the contrast between Meghan's sleek, minimalist look and the more frilly look of the other ladies. I feel like a broken record but wow, Meghan has not worn one outfit that I haven't loved to date! I'm really looking forward to the time when she starts attending engagements for her own charities, I feel that we'll see more of "Meghan's style" at these events. Not that she hasn't retained her own style so far but almost all of the events she's attended thus far have been big royal family events, where dressing up a bit more is expected so I'm looking forward to seeing her "working" wardrobe.

  37. I may be in the minority, but this is my least favourite look of Meghan's so far. While elegant, having the outfit and accessories all match, especially in that colour, was too much for me. Maybe in another season this could have worked, but not in the summer to a christening. I also noticed in the past, most of the women around Kate in the official photos have usually somewhat coordinated colours, like blue, I think it's too bad that she chose to go in a completely different direction to all the other royal women and Kate's family. This being said, I am very much looking forward to seeing Meghan's tour outfits, I am normally an eager supporter of all her fashion choices.

    1. Stephanie M-W I absolutely see where you are coming from regarding this moss green colour. I do think Meghan looks stunning. I've wondered, however, how the official family photo with the Royals and the Middletons is going to look, with all the ladies in cream or pastels and Meghan with such a heavy and drab colour. I don't think there is an official memo as to what colour people should wear, but the women probably confer with each other. Meghan either doesn't think to do that, or she wants to be different.

What a lovely day! Harry and Meghan look wonderful together. Meghan looked gorgeous! I loved her look from head to toe, especially her hair. The only part I wasn’t sure about was the color of the hat and dress. It’s beautiful, but definitely not a summer color. It seems like an odd choice for a July christening.

  43. I thought Meghan just looked stunning today. I didn't see the clutch and gloves until she exited the church. WOW! that's really pulling it together. While I can see some not liking the color - most of us would wear it in the Fall - it is a beautiful neutral.

The high waist with belt, the dolman-like full sleeves, the boat neck are what make this super chic. I love that someone above mentioned it reminded her of Diana - I could totally see Diana wearing this dress.

  45. I am realizing that although I try not to feel this way, I expect MM to wear what the others are wearing. That is, my expectation is that she will and of course there is no reason why she should, so then I try to justify the difference. She would not look as good in what Kate wore, Kate would not look as good in this outfit, and all the guests could take a cue from MM except Camilla, who looked lovely in a basic white. Shows how prejudiced someone can be when they think they are not. I like the description of mossy green, which is very summary and outdoorsy. Reminds me of the wedding photos in the beautiful green room.

I personally think that on this occasion most of the women including Catherine's family are really dressed up too much for an essentially private family occasion, especially in the icecream colours with very elaborate hats. I agree it is a Queen Motherly style which doesn't fit in very well with the everyday suits and ties the men are wearing. I note that Catherine's solicitor cousin is wearing a simple red dress which seems fine to me.I think Meghan's outfit is just right for this event., fits her well, the hat is lovely and she looks very elegant without being overdressed. I don't like the gloves though as they seem out of place in such hot weather.

Green is a very important colour when it comes to colour psychology.

It symbolises unconditional love for both ourselves and those around us - which could be a touching nod to her new in-laws.

It also represents growth and rebirth - which is pretty prefect for a christening.

  53. I think Meghan's hat, hair and shoes are amazing. I am not entirely sold on the shade of olive of the outfit. Whilst very elegant, I somehow think a bit of white in there somewhere would have made it more summery. It does look like an autumn outfit, and it is in the middle of summer. The colour suits Meghan very well though.

  54. I love Meghan's aesthetic, and this outfit is no exception. My only quibble is it is just too matchy matchy. A flowered or nude shoe or flowred clutch could have gone a long way here. Still, she was a standout for me!

  55. Lovely day for a christening, nice to see some pictures& video of the family celebrating this special day!

I loved Meghan’s look, from head to toe. Olive is a colour that she has worn in previous years and she looks just lovely in this olive Ralph Lauren dress. Meghan’s sleek ponytail with Stephen Jones hat suits her wonderfully. I’m looking forward to tomorrow and also Harry and Meghan’s trip to Ireland.

  57. I think Meghan looks stunning & I think this color will actually blend in nicely within the family photos. If you think of colors as a palette... & you look at the BRF members' outfits as if they are colors in a summer garden, then Meghan's subtle olive/sage green may serve as a lovely anchor to the colors in the family portraits! We will have to see, but that's my hunch! :)

  58. Meghan Markle’s green outfit would have seemed more appropriate for her arrival in Ireland, which makes me think that perhaps someth8ng happened to her planned christening outfit. The green outfit is nice, but it just does not seem to fit in with what the royals are wearing - if she is in any of the christening portraits she will not coordinate nicely with the Duchesses and the Middleton ladies, as is a usual rule of thumb for such events.

  59. Seeing an image of her exiting the church, where her ponytail is very visible and the back slit in the skirt shows, she looks just amazing. As much as I truly love Kate's hat, MM looked best today. :)

I ADORE that ponytail!! VERY chic and elegant & I bet much easier to handle than the "messy bun"... I´m no fan of the colour of the dress, but she can wear it - otherwise the total ensemble was just perfect, "effortless chic" at its best!!

I love her look. The cut of the dress is elegant and the hat matches perfectly. As for shoes they are "always the same", in her place I would ose more, but the ensemble is beautiful. Love the colour as well, even if it's a little "fall" colour, but I prefere fall as summer, so....as for gloves, I don't really undestand their use in July...

  61. Meghan looks lovely yet I agree this olive green isn't the best choice of color especially in summer. With that said she is a lovely lady no matter what color she is wearing.

  63. I think the style of the dress, hair, make-up and hat are great. I was really disappointed in the dress color. It seems dreary and sad for an event centered around a baby in the summer. I hope she will use the dress for a memorial service, or someplace where the color fits the occasion or season. The ensemble is amazing, but seems out of place to me somehow for this event.

  64. Meghan looks absolutely lovely. And I noticed that her shoes from yesterday and today appear to fit properly -- a much better look for her.

  65. The color is different for summer, but Meghan wears it beautifully.
I love the hat and the ponytail. She really has the hat thing down.

I'm not crazy about trying to match everything - dress, shoes, hat, purse - it's almost impossible to get a perfect, or even good, match.

A nice complementary color is a better choice, in my opinion.

The Duchess of Cambridge was glowing, just gorgeous.

The queen rocks color better than anyone. She is amazing.
