It's a Very Royal Girls Day Out as the Duchesses Do Wimbledon!

It was a very royal girls day out as the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge attended Wimbledon today.

It marks Meghan and Kate's first joint outing together without their husbands, and Meghan's first visit to the tournament as a member of the Royal family. As they both love the game, it seemed very fitting for the pair to attend. Kate has been patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 2016. It's another royal milestone for Meghan who had a busy week with the RAF Centenary celebrations and a successful two-day visit to Dublin.

An overview of the royal duo arriving.

An arrival video.

Before they took their seats, the Duchesses met a number of former Wimbledon Ladies Champions, as well as some of the Championships' ball boys and ball girls to hear more about their experiences at the tournament.

The royals met wheelchair competitors.

The Telegraph reports: Tia Carter, 11, who will be performing the coin toss before the ladies' singles final, said she was both excited and nervous to meet the royals. She said: "Meghan asked how old I was, and what I was doing today. I told her I will be performing the coin toss and she said 'so I will be seeing you later'. Tia’s father Wayne serves in the RAF, as did her mother Joyce, who sadly passed away suddenly last year. The RAF Benevolent Fund’s flagship youth support scheme, Airplay, has been a great support to Tia as she comes to terms with the loss of her mother.

Meghan and Kate meeting junior players.

Spectators from all over the world descend upon the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for a fortnight of incredible tennis. Steeped in tradition, it is the only tennis major played on grass, with players donning white, precisely as they did a century ago. It is also the only Grand Slam tournament with a Royal Box. This year, Wimbledon celebrates its 150th anniversary.

The Duchesses enter the Royal Box.

Another view.

Kate and Meghan took their seats and enjoyed chatting.

They are clearly very much at ease in each other's company and had a wonderful time discussing their shared love of tennis.

Due to the men's semi-finals going considerably over schedule, not only did Meghan and Kate have the opportunity to see the ladies' semi-finals, they also saw the final two sets of an epic match between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

It was an incredibly tense match.

Following a spectacular display of tennis Novak Djokovic was victorious.

The royals chat with Gill Brook, wife of AELTC chairman Philip Brook.

An overview of Wimbledon.

How amazing does the 'Tennis Ball Hedge' look?

Over 300,000 glasses of Pimm's are consumed at the tournament. Meghan once revealed "having a love of all things Brit" she adores the refreshing gin-based drink.

Meghan's attendance today came as no coincidence. The Duchess was reportedly very keen to visit the tournament this year to support her close friend Serena Williams. The tennis superstar attended the Royal wedding and accompanied the Sussexes to Coworth Park with her husband Alexis Ohanian just days before her first match. The pair have been close for several years and in 2016 (the summer Harry and Meghan met) she was courtside at Wimbledon twice to cheer Williams on.

In a piece for her lifestyle blog The Tig, Meghan shared the following on their friendship: "We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting not about tennis or acting, but about all the good old fashioned girly stuff. So began our friendship. She quickly became a confidante I would text when I was traveling, the friend I would rally around for her tennis matches, and the down to earth chick I was able to grab lunch with just a couple weeks ago in Toronto. We are both the same age, have a penchant for hot sauces and adore fashion, but what connects us more than those things is perhaps our belief in exceeding expectations – our endless ambition. Serena is undoubtedly one of the best tennis players the world has ever seen."

Williams has been inundated with questions about the Duchess' possible attendance for the past two weeks. Responding to the news she would be cheering her on today, she said, "We've always had a wonderful friendship and every year for a couple years she comes out to Wimbledon, has supported me and now she’s supporting me in a different role. But our friendship is still exactly the same," she said. "We always have supported each other, just been there for each other through a lot."

Serena Williams, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, played for her 24th major singles title. Title number 24 would tie Serena with Margaret Court for the highest number of grand-slam singles titles won by a female player. The tennis pro returned to the tournament after giving birth to her daughter Olympia ten months ago. Following a life-threatening scare during the birth, it's astonishing to see her back at a Wimbledon final less than a year later. Serena's opponent is German tennis player Angelique Kerber. The former world No. 1 won Major titles at the 2016 Australian Open (beating Williams) and the 2016 US Open. She has also won an Olympic silver medal while representing Germany at the 2016 summer games. Kerber and Williams have played on numerous occasions including the Wimbledon 2016 Final where Williams was victorious.

Meghan cheers Serena on.

Alas, it was not to be for Serena Williams this time. Angelique Kerber gained control very early on and won in two sets. It's a very special day for the hugely talented player, marking her first Wimbledon win.

Supportive hugs after the match.

The Duchesses congratulated Angelique.

I'm sure Meghan was disappointed for her friend, however as anyone who follows tennis knows, Serena will be back. I thought this a particularly sweet photo, taken immediately after Serena lost. There's been such efforts in the media and among fans to pit these two women against each other. I think today proved they're firm friends.

We've all been looking forward to seeing Meghan's sartorial choices for her Wimbledon debut as a member of the Royal family. She looked cool and chic in a crisp Ralph Lauren shirt and wide leg trousers. I thought it a very fresh take on the 'Wimbledon Whites' look we see spectators choosing. The the pop of blue from the shirt added a nice splash of colour to the look. Meghan's choice of Ralph Lauren was no coincidence - as the brand supplies the clothing for the Championship's ball kids, lines judges and umpires.

Meghan sported the $590 Ralph Lauren Collection Striped Cotton Shirt (with thanks to What Meghan Wore). The piece is described as "A spread collar and a relaxed fit bring an easy chic to this American-made shirt. Crisp Italian cotton and genuine mother-of-pearl buttons add a subtle sophistication." The piece is available at Ralph Lauren and Orchard Mile.

Meghan's trousers are the Ralph Lauren Charmain Silk Wide-Leg Pant. The $1690 pair feature a wide-leg silhouette, intended to hit the floor. Concealed left-side-seam zipper with a hook-and-eye closure and full stretch silk lining. They are available at Ralph Lauren and Orchard Mile.

The Telegraph writes:

'While the high-waisted cut of the trousers was unmistakably feminine, the overall look was quite androgynous, and topped with a panama hat the twin of the one she wore to Wimbledon two years ago.
And there is more than an element of nostalgia here. In 2016, Meghan attended Wimbledon as a guest of Ralph Lauren - the brand's PR was rumoured to have introduced her to Prince Harry. Wearing the brand to revisit the championships, now as Prince Harry's wife, shows she hasn't forgotten the connection.'

Anne identified Meghan's new hat as the Maison Michel Virginie Straw Sunhat. The hat is available with a grey stripe at Net-A-Porter and a red stripe at FarFetch.

It very much looks like Meghan's new sunglasses are the Illesteva Leonard round-frame acetate sunglasses (with thanks to Meghan Maven). They are available at Net-A-Porter.

And Meghan carried her ALTUZARRA Ghianda Saddle Bag.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a bespoke Jenny Packham dress. To read more, click here to visit Duchess Kate.

We'll see Harry and Meghan on Tuesday. The couple will open the Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition at Southbank Centre's Queen Elizabeth Hall.

  1. I love this look. Her non official style (assume she isn't here in an official capacity) is so much better then her official style (though I like both). I am loving that she is wearing pants!!!! The pants are a big too big and long for me, but still, love it. It's different. Hate the messy bun is back. Love the shirt, how she styled it, and color

For me its not so much that she's wearing trousers, but the are not flattering to her in the least in my opinion. she's baggy and wrinkled, that blouse is not flattering either.

and what does respect have to do with pants, either way??

  3. Very chic look. I could never pull off the wide leg trousers the way she does 😉

    2. Agree anon 14:43. The whole outfit looks great until you get to the bottom half. She will have nasty grass stains on these white trousers.

    3. 14:43 They're styled and intended to be worn that way.
15:27 Not to worry. Someone will clean that for her.

    4. I agree entirely! One wear only? She looks better in cropped, tapered legged trousers in any event....

    5. Not a fan of thus trousers too, but this look is a Clear win.

    6. I agree Philly. The pants are fitted and tailored correctly. This is how they are designed. Ralph Lauren is THE brand for classic American sportswear, I don’t believe a tailoring mistake would be made here. I’ve seen this come up a lot since her wedding dress. She is wearing high end designers and comes from a professional background that included high end fashion. She knows what she’s doing. And I just don’t believe that Givenchy or Oscar de La Renta or Ralph Lauren would let a woman this photographed go out without things perfect. That is if she is availing herself of their tailoring which I would assume. I think people are reacting to her wearing unexpected styles, and are assuming the fit is wrong. But perhaps with the exception of the strapless bra outline the other day I think all her clothes are designed and tailored exactly how they are supposed to be. I love the Wimbledon look. As an American this is such a high end American outfit (a Ralph Lauren trademark if you will) and I love she is keeping some style trademarks that I would consider American while I also blending seamlessly into her new British family. I just love watching what she will wear and do next! :)

    7. Wonderful to see the Duchesses together! While I loved the striped blue and white shirt - great on her skin tone - the trousers were a miss: they looked cream against the white of the shirt, were too long, and too dressy for the the shirt.

    8. Just my thoughts re: the trousers, it appears they aren't necessarily meant to be worn long, if you look at the left photo of the model--they don't puddle on the ground as they do in the photo on the right (the heel height might have helped Meghan). The thing is, even if they were meant to wear puddled on the ground, that doesn't mean it makes sense. I mean, just because a designer is impractical doesn't mean others need to follow suit. How many women could wear such pants around the city? They'd be tripping over their pants and the pants would be filthy within minutes. How Meghan avoided walking on top of her hem is beyond me (I'm glad she did though!) Designers are definitely not practical sometimes.

Jeanne, I thought the same...cream trousers w/ white & blue shirt seemed a bit off.

    1. I think the very occasion has that much and more value to her. It is her friend Serena's final competition some months after she had a baby and some bad injury. The pants will mark the occasion, win or lose ( hopefully a win for her friend). It is a sharply modern look and she looks relaxed. The pants also look like a great fit. The length, style or not, doesn't make sense in practical terms. She carries it well, each to her own comfort.

    2. 15:35 They'll no doubt be a great choice to wear repeatedly after the tennis. They could easily go to Oz.

      Delete
    3. Well it was not a win for Serena, but her gracious comment makes it all alright. She had made several conquests at "the battle" of Wimbledon. To have done it this far as a finalist post her recent life changes is also laudable. I like her comment on the defeat.

  6. Okay, I'm loving this look today! So very chic and trendy. These tailored looks really suit Meghan, and she pulls off the wide leg very well. Her looks seem to either be very structured, or very drapy/flowy. She tends to push the envelope in both directions, and I, for one, appreciate her willingness to take fashion risks. It's also wonderful to see her spending quality time with Kate!

  7. Meghans look is spot on! I love that she is always current and on trend but remains classic and simple. The slacks are a staple in the Ralph Lauren collection for years now. Totally elegant in a casual way. As I have mentioned before I love that she schuzz her sleeves. Opens up the look and takes away from a winter look that man tailored shirts can have. On duty or off Meghan is being Meghan.

The moment we’ve been waiting for (at least I know I have been) and the ladies did not disappoint! I love both looks. Ralph Lauren is one of my favorite designers: classic, crisp, cool and very “American” (in the best sense). It’s like Meghan was made for wearing his designs. I have always enjoyed Kate’s Wimbledon choices (the controversial McQueen from a few years ago is my favorite) and she looks gorgeous today (as usual).
The ladies seem to genuinely enjoy each other and both appear so happy. What more can we ask for? I can’t wait to see more pictures!

  17. I read that MM was Ralph Lauren's guest at Wimbledon 2 years ago; if true, then it is nice that she chose to wear RL today. I am remembering when wide-leg jeans were in a million years ago, and I'm not a current fan of them but these are really nice (and I refuse to believe that MM paid "retail"). Meghan looks wonderful and I'm glad she brought along her hat. The shirt is perfection. The best thing is that the two of them got a day together doing something they love to do! Only wish Emma Watson had been a part of their group. :)

      Delete
    3. I think when a piece is bespoke, there is no way to know the cost, so Kate probably is paying the same sum total. Or, by the same token, maybe bespoke pieces come with a reduced cost in exchange for the publicity. I remember when I read about Kate's first $5000 dress, and I couldn't believe it. Silly me---I guess it's part of the business of publicizing the RF and fueling tourism, etc. And, I often read that a piece had an original price of XXX but is now discounted to XXX, so perhaps MM and Kate can enjoy savings there. I like when they wear something less costly that boosts a newcomer to the fashion scene.

And I love wide leg trousers as well, I always feel so feminine and flowy in them :) And finally I love how she rolled up her sleeves between the meet n greet and going to the Royal Box; must be warm today. All in all, thanks for the early posting Charlotte, as I said over at HRHDK this brightened my early morning considerably!

Not a big fan of wide-leg trousers for myself, but once more I love Meghan’s way absolutely ! Understated and so elegant at the same time , modern and timeless ...
It is a good opportunity to see the difference of style between Meghan and Catherine , who looks good too but so matronly and never out of the lane , I hope Meghan’s era will give inspiration to the youngest women of the BRF ....

  20. I also read about Meghan being a Ralph Lauren guest, and the putative match maker is a Lauren public relations executive, so lovely sentimental choice. Love her look today, very crisp and tailored (trousers and shirt), but with a soft edge in the loose fit of the shirt and the palazzo style of the trousers, and the messy bun, of course! Very Meghan as we have come to observe. In fact,Kate and Meghan, in my opinion, were each dressed in her own quintessential style. To my mind, both women made a statement today about their styles when they appeared together.

I also like the pants although as a rule I never wear white pants simply because they are so hard to clean. But I guess Meghan doesn't have to worry about that. I do think though that the outfit would have looked really good with some narrower khakhi trousers. I also love that the sloppy bun is back! Yay! Overall this look is a win.

  29. Beautiful pants and blouse. She looks gorgeous but I find it a bit too casual for the event and not because of the pants but to me its the combination of the oversized blouse and nothing to elevate the look a bit from something you would wear out to lunch with a friend. Maybe a belt and blazer? I also am not a fan of pants that purposely are made to drag on the ground and look too long. A very popular style, but it always comes off as a bit of wealth flaunting (i.e. suggesting that one can buy a pair of expensive pants and not worry about only wearing them once due to them dragging on the ground and getting dirty and frayed). I am not suggesting Meghan is thinking this at all but that is the thought that goes through my head when I see anyone wearing that style. We are tennis players and would love to attend Wimbledon.

    1. I agree that a soft, maybe 3/4 sleeve blazer and belt would have looked better with this style of trousers. I could see this blouse with more tailored, straight-leg trousers. This outfit is a 9.7 for me. I adore the shirt. I have no issue with wearing pants in the royal box. This is a look I love that both duchesses are showing their individual style. However, the shirt and the pants both need a little tailoring. The wide legs pants are meant to be long, but not dragging on the ground. The shirt should be worn a little loose in the waist to balance out the wide leg pants, but this seems slightly too oversized.
But I really do love the look

  37. A question: I read awhile ago that Meghan once gifted herself an expensive watch when she was working on Suits. A treat for finally achieving financial success, one I totally relate to. Anyway, I don’t think I have seen her wear a watch since she’s been with Harry and, well, I wonder why. I always wear a watch or a Fitbit :)

  38. I'm very appreciative of the fact that Meghan is dressing as herself. She knew that Kate would be a dress but she went with something completely different - and it's incredibly chic. The crisp stripe blouse and the soft slacks really worked well for her.

The photo from the back of those slacks posted above shows them slightly 'puddled' at the bottom similar to how Meghan's looked while she was standing on the lawn. Personally I would wear them that long (for fear of tripping) but it's also possible Meghan had them hemmed for a different pair of heels.

Emma Watson looked very stylish as well in her three-piece white suit.

I was sad that Serena didn't win - was really pulling for her. Hopefully she'll also make the finals at the US Open. :-)

Lovely get together for the Duchesses! I think Meghan looks great, but the pants are a tad long. Princess Victoria also wears wider pants at times, but you can always see the shoes. I think a little bit shorter would have been more elegant. The shirt is spectacular! Kate’s dress with “tennis balls” is lovely. They both look really happy, which is the main thing.

  40. Forgive me if I am repeating myself, my post did not seem to go through. In the USA in major metropolitan cities khaki trousers are worn as part of school uniforms. Additionally, most men favor them with navy blazers. As such I do not think ladies in making a fashion statement lean toward them. Unfortunately, they can make one look very broad in the back when walking away. No one wants that now. LOL

  41. I absolutely love Meghan's look -she's such an inspiration, way beyond her fashion choices. 1. Emma Waston's pants are quite similar but not identical. Emma's pants have a zipper in the front and possibly a small pocket flap at the waist. I think they both looked great but I think Meghan's hat would have looked better on Emma than the straw she wore. Can't tell if Meghan's pants dragged the floor (which I don't care for) or that she just sunk a bit on grass. Another great look for Meghan would have been a midi-length skirt and wedge shoes.

    2. On the product model wearing the matching jacket her feet and shoes can clearly be seen. Meghan's shoes are covered with excess material so long it folds on the ground. I mostly worry about safety. I wonder if she was wearing higher shoes when she had the trousers fitted? She appears to have lost some weight recently, which would also alter to the way the trousers hang.Except for that detail, I think her outfit was casual yet stylish. I especially liked the Panama hat and wish there were photos of her wearing it with the outfit.

    1. Susan, I agree with your husband. What the duchesses wear isn't so important. The princes have always had a close bond, and I'm sure it was crucial that their wives bonded, too. In these pictures, it looks like they have done just that. Wouldn't their mother be so proud of them?

  47. USA Granny, I agree with you that the pants are actually rather dressy. And they may not be quite a long when she is not standing in grass.

It is terrific to see the two of them wearing styles that look great on each.

I LOVE this look but alas, I may be in the minority here but I don’t think I like the cream color of the trousers with the blue/white of the shirt. It clashes a bit to me. A pretty blue would be more my personal liking but in the end, she’s still graceful and gorgeous!

I like Meghan's pants and shirt. A beautiful, chic and appropriate choise. Lovely to see the sisters in law enjoying time together. Something nice that can evolve in a deep friendship.

  51. How I would love to have the figure and the budget to pull off Meghan's look! She looks fabulous. (And I'm not being catty about the budget. I don't begrudge anyone being able to afford luxury. In fact I'm happy for the Duchesses that they can indulge this way as, goodness knows, they pay a high price in loss of privacy.)

    Both look lovely today.

  53. I think it is good to remember that we are seeing so much more of Meghan in the early months then we ever saw of Kate. As a result some are looking at the cost of clothing over a short period of time. It most likely will be that cost will all balance itself out at years end. The budget for working fashions in picked up by Charles office. I think he is very happy to indulge his beloved daughters in law as they bring great positive attention to the RF, the country and the fashion industry in general. I think we would all be taken back to see the actual allowance that comes with their working attire. Unfortunately, it can not be compared to most of ours or shall I say mine! LOL

  54. I looked at some of the comments on KP twitter, praising Kate and attacking Meghan I wonder how both duchesses feel about this? Is there an option to delete offensive comments on KP twitter and instagram, I would understand if it's Daily Mail we know the journalists there are negative- but KP is now Meghan's home now. How does Harry feel about it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There is but I'm not sure KP does it regularly. I think those comments are offensive and thinly disguised racism but I'm pretty sure Meghan doesn't care. She has the support of her own family and friends (including Serena!) and her new extended family (the BRF).

      Delete
    2. We have to consider the people who make these hateful remarks. They are the lowest of the low, classless and of no use to society.

      Delete
    3. I highly doubt any of the royals read the comments on the KP social media accounts. They have a social media press person to handle the accounts, and if the royals did want to know what people were writing to them they've probably go through the social media press person and have the negative stuff filtered.

      Delete
    4. Just because you do not agree with what someone says you should not respond is a judgemental way - people should be able to express their thoughts without fear of attack.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous - I agree to an extent but if the "thoughts" are blatantly untrue, racist, hateful, and derogatory I don't think that should be allowed. For instance in the U.S. we have a president who constantly puts down women, immigrants, private citizens, and whatever else. Is he allowed to say it? Yes I suppose so -- he's allowed. But shoild his lies have consequences? Yes I think they should.

      Delete
    6. If by fear of attack you mean a personal attack I agree with you. If you mean you should not expect disagreement, then that's unrealistic. Social media isnt a bubble that exists only for the person posting.

      Delete
    7. I do not have twitter or Instagram, but it is possible to read some of the comments and I remember being surprised they did not moderate the negative ones, which are not exclusive to Meghan, but generally antiroyalist and violent. Perhaps it is not feasible ?As for saying those who post those kind of comments " are the lowest of the low, classless and of no use to society" it is a very harsh opinion on other human beings that may not have had the same happiness in life.

  55. YES! A sisters(in-law) day out - this is what I have been waiting for! I love seeing them interact without their husbands. I do truly believe they spend time together since they live so close to one another. I would think Harry & Meghan would want to be a hands-on uncle & aunt.

I do like today’s outfit choice. I know the pants are styled to be long but I wish they had tailored them so they grazed the ground instead of slouched onto it. Both ladies looked lovely and I hope we get more girls days out!

Would love this outfit if the pants were just a little shorter. Don't really understand ppl saying the shirt is too big, but that's just personal preference I suppose. I must say though, the slightly more cream color of the pants looks off to me when paired with the more...stark white (for lack of a better term bc I'm bad at fashion terminology-and fashion- lol) of the shirt. I'm just one of those ppl who can't stand cream and white mismatches like that for some reason...it always really bugs me but I know it's a bit silly and certainly isn't something I expect others to adhere to.

I am a bit disappointed by the expense of her wardrobe so far. I won't compare total cost to kate at the beginning since kate did far fewer appearances, and tbh i think kate lately has gotten too expensive as well, but for example 600 dollars for this shirt? For the more important, diplomatic events like the Ireland visit I understand wanting to stick to bespoke from trusted, high end designers but there's no reason she couldn't have found a much cheaper version of this shirt on high street etc. I have several similar shirts at 1/20th of the cost lol. And if she's going to spend so much on outfits, symbolically I just think it'd be better if she didn't eschew British fashion houses for foreign ones all the time, or at least for "British" events. Now to be fair even McQueen isnt actually owned by a British company, so I'm not sure in this day and age if it particularly matters to the British economy to be wearing British designers working for British fashion lines, but I feel like there is still a sort of intangible patriotic symbolic effect to wearing home designers that the royals have an obligation to tap into.

    1. Hi Maggie, glad to see you back!

    2. I have wondered about the expense too. But, I am hoping she is investing in pieces that she will wear for years to come to spread the cost out.

      Delete
    3. I agree with your comment. What bothers me with the trousers is that they will get dirt and grass staines and I definitely wouldn’t bet on them being able to be cleaned without heavy chemicals which might not do the delicate fabric any good. My guess is we will never see them again and in that case this is a lot of money for one outing.

    4. The shirt did not cost 600 it only cost 106.

    5. Regarding cost I find it disingenuous to only go after Meghan for wearing designer clothing but yet again everyone else is allowed to wear the same type of clothing that Meghan is. Her early events involved high profile engagements with the Queen in which most of the royal women wear their very best without the constant harping over cost. Meghan is building a wardrobe and will include but high end and middle end designers.

      Delete
    6. I find it funny how this bothers so many. I think people are so used to Kate’s way of doing things and her fashion approach that they expect to squeeze Meghan into the exact same mold. It’s been barely two months. Meghan has hit the ground running with way more engagements, and she probably didn’t have any thing to fit a royal work wardrobe prior. The media also pumps out all sorts of numbers and acts as if no other royal lady has spent a large sum on clothes. She is in the building stage and what I love is that her style is so classic (which people I’m sure would argue and say boring) that she will get a lot of wear out of what she has invested in. It would be nice for others to focus on her eager attitude and willingness to get her feet wet quickly!

    7. I agree with you Mimi. Kate wears custom bespoke clothing almost every year to these games which are rarely repeated and yet no one bats an eye. Megha has been a royal spouse hardly for 8 weeks and has had a record number of engagements. If we are going to criticise lets be fair to both .
I also see a pattern of some posters harping in every thread about the cost and British designers and this same poster does that in about every meghan site including here. If you dont like meghan at all why waste time reading and following her? Am not being catty but genuinely wonder.
As had been pointed out by someone else most of these fashion houses dont even make clothing in UK including mcq jp. So it really doesnt matter i am getting the feeling that since there is nothing else to complain about her all these non issues are bloated in the form of subtle insults as if she doesnt know to dress wear fitted clothing and the like

      Delete
    8. Hi Mimi, I agree completely with your comment!! All of the items that Meghan has worn to date was quite timeless and classic and I'm sure she will get years of use out of them. Imho, Meghan is doing quite well as a new royal and the press much prefers to have something to carp about so they're rooting around looking for something negative to write about.

I have read much about the BRF for years and in almost every book I've read discounts are discussed. The royals rarely pay full price for anything. In fact, Fergie, Princess Margaret and Princess Michael has been paid to attend events and/or have received free goods in exchange for an appearance. Now I'm not suggesting that Meghan has done this but I don't think any of the royal women pay full retail for their clothes especially not the bespoke pieces.

    9. Well said Mimi! And she belongs to the family for 3 months.

    10. Mimi, I don’t know where you came up with the $106 dollar figure, but the shirt is listed at $590.00 at the official Ralph Lauren site.

    11. Anonymous to your question: "If you dont like meghan at all why waste time reading and following her? Am not being catty but genuinely wonder," I can only give a personal answer . In my case, I don't read about Meghan because I like her, I have no emotional involvement in her, positive or negative. I am interested in the RF and in fashion. She is in an interesting place. I agree it is a waste of time, I am sure we all have something better to do but enjoy being distracted from it!

      Delete
    12. @Mimi, you might have noticed that all BRF ladies are criticised for the size and cost of their wardrobe but the Queen and Princess Anne. And while I am a supporter of the institution and 99% of the individuals (including Meghan) I think this is a very valid point of criticism. Most wish Kate would wear more repeats and it is not as if Meghan was without smart clothes before her marriage. She was an actress antending red carpet events, photoshots and business meetings. While there is defenitely a need for new stuff I think she owns a lot of the same style already. At least from what I saw her wearing during her acting days. Furthermore: many are slightly disappointed with Kate who is still "building up" her wardrobe several years in and are not giving the benefit of the doubt easily again.
Lastly- This is a website about Meghan and we are asked not chnage the subject so of course people will praise or criticise Meghan and not other people. Insulting posters by calling them "disingenuous" is rather unpolite in my eyes.

  59. That RL shirt for $60 sounds like a great alternative!!

I think they were playing with us---Kate wore tennis balls and Meghan looked like the referees!

I am so glad to see the two together---we have heard that each is a very nice, kind, and considerate person, so there is no reason they should not be good friends and close family members. There seems to be enjoy love to go around for each.

  60. Great day for Meghan. I loved the look the crisp blouse with the wide leg trousers(although a bit too long). Although it’s a messy bun, it’s completely perfect for today. And she’s done very structured, perfectly styled hair lately, so this is the perfect event to mix it up.

  61. They both looked great today. I loved the shirt Meghan was wearing and the way it was styled. Seeing the friendliness between the two duchesses was great.

  62. I think Meghan is beautiful. I think she is so very petite and her clothes often seem to overwhelm her small frame. The pants are lovely in my opinion, but a bit too long. The shirt is too casual for the pants and again too large on Meghan’s frame. I think she needs a better tailor (and maybe a different shirt) for this outfit. But I loved the Double Duchess Date!!

  63. Wow Meghan looks like she just arrived from Key West or St. Tropez, love her style so modern fresh bold a little sexy and oh so stylish!!

  64. I really like Meghan's fresh crisp look, but not the fact the trousers are over long and drag on the floor, that's not cool. They should be hemmed up to a safe no trip level imho. in fact the trousers would have looked good as 7/8 too and even more so on Meghan. Love this look though.

  65. This wasn’t posted yesterday for some reason. The same kind of comment was posted on the Duchess of Cambridge's Blog. I will re-post here: The two Duchesses (Cambridge and Sussex) have a tough job, I’m sure, selecting dresses and hair styles for all the high profile engagements. They both have had hits and misses. I do not publicly critique them too much because if we were them, we would have critics also. Thanks, Charlotte.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love how at ease both of them were when they were together, also I like both ensembles, in terms of colours and styles. I think both of the Duchesses made quite a fashion statement that regardless the comparisons, some people draw on them, they are two different individuals, doing their best at their jobs. They, by no means, need to be the same.

I think Meghan looks so french, dont take me wrong. I mean french in a very good way. (Don't how to describe that - sorry for my English). The colours are fabulous. I really think her wide-leg trousers added the feminine and dressy touch to the whole look. However, for some reasons, I agree with some comments above that the trousers needs to be trimmed a bit to make the whole look even better, or she might need to wear higher heels. It seems to me that trousers will drag the grasses and dust on the floor, but she might not care about them either.

Look forward to Tuesday's engagement. heheh Charlotte, will the KP announce more engagements for the Duchess of Sussex this month or now we will have a bit of the withdrawals until she comes back from her summer vacation?
Thank you for the informative posts last week. You did a terrific job!

  67. I liked this look. It's chic and trendy! I've loved the trousers!!! It's an outfit that balances her body and looks great on her. Overall it's a great choice considering her body frame!

  68. Wow that was a lot of comments! I spend way too much of my time defending Meghan to people who, as we have all seen, seem to hate her for no reason. I think she proves daily - and she doesn't need to, does not owe any of us a damn thing - how much she loves flat out adores her husband. He is beyond lucky.
OK, now for the fashion :0) I want to like her Ralph Lauren duds. I do like the shirt, it reminds me of just classic preppy in a good way. And bits of my closet :) (I have a very smart Mum who steered me away from overly trendy clothes and into good, well-made classic pieces, then adding fun trendy jewelry). But Meghan's trousers just... they just look wromg, and I couldn't figure out what the problem was (outside of my fear of her tripping on her own pants, which I do at least once a week) until I saw them with the *jacket*!! I love a smart suit, Meghan has one or two that I think are brilliant and she looks so confident and utterly herself in. But these white/ off white trousers were made to pair with the jacket, that's why the zip is where it is and the very flat front.
Maybe I needed to see her shoes, and that would have tied the whole thing together. I lovelove wide -legged trousers, they are flattering, they are NOT as casual as some have suggested ("Oh mah gawd! Pants in the royal box?!? Ah must clutch mah pearls and flee! Quickly!") Many very fashionable women have chosen palazzo pants or other wide-legged trousers rather than a skirt or dress for decades. Princess Charlene of Monaco, whose clothes I don't always love, but I respect for taking fashion risks, often is seen in palazzo pants or even a "jumpsuit" at evening events. Trousers have come a long way, baby.
This outfit did prove another point I keep making - Meghan isn't "channeling" anyone. But she is taking cues from Carolyn Bessette (sp?) Kennedy, who always looked great, and rocked the heck out of the messy bun. Just no enormous tendrils hanging in the front. Oh how I wish Meghan would fix those.
Sorry to write a novel, I have no one to talk fashion with! This is fun, thanks everyone!
