The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Mark RAF Centenary

Ahead of their first official overseas visit to Dublin later today, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined members of the Royal family for events marking the centenary of the Royal Air Force.

The day began with a service at Westminster Abbey.

Harry and Meghan arriving.

Harry and Meghan joined Her Majesty The Queen,  The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke of York, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, The Princess Royal and other Members of the Royal Family.

Her Majesty arrives.

The Royal Air Force - the world’s first independent air force - was founded on 1 April 1918, independent of the British Army and Royal Navy. For one hundred years the RAF has defended the skies of Britain, preventing conflicts, delivering aid and combating cyber threats while working in partnership with other Services, from Operation Ruman - the UK’s humanitarian assistance operation in the aftermath of hurricane Irma which hit the Caribbean in September 2017, to the RAF’s Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon Aircraft, providing a UK air defence capability 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Following victory over the Central Powers in 1918 the RAF emerged as, at the time, the largest air force in the world. Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history. In particular, it played a large part in the Second World War where it fought its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain. The RAF describe its mission statement as "An agile, adaptable and capable Air Force that, person for person, is second to none, and that makes a decisive air power contribution in support of the UK Defence Mission" Today the RAF is engaged on some 13 missions across 26 countries and is heavily committed on operations both at home and abroad.

Today we honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

We honour those engaged in missions at home and abroad today, often separated from their families for long periods of time.

The royals take their seats.

Harry and Meghan before the service began.

Did you know Westminster Abbey has a chapel dedicated to members of the RAF? At the eastern end of the magnificent Lady Chapel built by King Henry VII is a chapel dedicated to the men of the Royal Air Force who died in the Battle of Britain between July and October 1940. This chapel received damage from bombs which fell in that year and a hole made in the stonework has been preserved and covered with glass. The Tudor glass in the window had also been blown out at the same time.

In 1922 a stained glass window was unveiled in Westminster Abbey to members of the Royal Flying Corps who died during the war. The theme of the window is flying men and wings, illustrated by passages from the prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel. The inscription reads: To the glory of God and in proud and thankful memory of those members of the British Royal Flying Corps who fell in the Great War 1914-18.

Wing Commander Nikki Thomas, the first ever female RAF Tornado bomber squadron commander, read the poem High Flight by John Gillespie Magee Jr. “Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings...”

Mark Hunt, an Engineer Officer in the RAF for over 20 years, read from The Birth of the Royal Air Force by Richard Overy. “No other fighting power established an independent air force during the war”

You can view the Order of Service here.

To mark its centenary year, special events, activities and other initiatives at local, regional and national levels will run until the end of September.

The royals then watched the "Presentation of Colours" - a ceremony where a regimental unit is given new flags.

During her speech, the Queen said "I remember the Battle of Britain being fought in the skies above us, and we shall never forget the courage and sacrifice of that time."

The centrepiece of RAF100 was a magnificent flypast.

Up to 100 jets, helicopters and aeroplanes soared above London for the rare military celebration. The royals assembled on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to view the outstanding display.

The royals watching the flypast.

A closer look at the Duchess on the balcony.

Crowds lined The Mall in London.

The Evening Standard reports: "The flypast will consist of up to 100 different aircraft of 23 different types, with nearly 200 aircrew from 25 different RAF squadrons. The lightest aircraft will be the 120 TP Prefect at a maximum take-off weight of 1,440kg, and the heaviest will be the C-17 Globemaster III at 265,350kg. The largest aircraft taking part is set to be the Voyager at a length of 58.82 metres and with a wingspan of 60.3 metres. The Typhoon FGR4 is the fastest with a top speed of Mach 1.8, with the slowest being the helicopters."

Spectacular scenes.

An overview.

A very nice shot of the newlyweds.

A video with excellent footage of the royals and the flypast.

After the flypast, the Duke and Duchess attended a reception where they met RAF servicemen and women, charity representatives involved in the RAF100 Appeal, RAF Veterans and Civil Service personnel involved in the centenary celebrations.

The RAF100 Appeal is a joint venture between the Royal Air Force and four major RAF charities. The aim of the Appeal is to raise money for the RAF Family and to create a lasting legacy as they celebrate 100 years of the Royal Air Force. The Appeal forms part of the wider RAF100 initiative that seeks to commemorate the achievements of the RAF and all those who have served while at the same time celebrating the vital contribution that the RAF continues to make, and inspire both the public and the RAF Family as they look forward to the next 100 years. If you would like to support the appeal please click here.

It seems fitting to include a quote from the historic speech made by Prime Minister Winston Churchill on 20 August 1940, referring to the ongoing efforts of the Royal Air Force crews who were at the time fighting the Battle of Britain.

The Duchess selected a bespoke Dior dress today. The stylish piece features a fit-and-flare silhouette, a boat neck and long sleeves. The dress has a very 1950s feel and works perfectly for the occasion. The iconic French fashion house specialises in understated feminine elegance - I do hope this marks the beginning of a new fashion relationship.

A black dress with a boat neck from the Spring/Summer '18 couture collection. I imagine Meghan's dress is a customised version of the piece.

Meghan's hat is by milliner Stephen Jones.

HeavenQRF believes Meghan's shoes and clutch are also by Dior.

Heaven kindly sent me a press release from Dior confirming they designed the black silk and wool dress, black leather clutch and shoes.

Meghan completed the look with her Cartier earrings.

A look at Harry and Meghan's Dublin itinerary this afternoon:

  • The Royals will arrive at Dublin airport where they will be greeted by the waiting media.
  • Meghan and Harry will meet with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on Merrion Street.
  • The newlyweds will enjoy a summer garden party at the British Ambassdor's headquarters, Glencairn House.

We'll see you later today when Harry and Meghan arrive.

she nailed it once again! She's absolutely stunning. Looking forward to the rest of the day!!!

    3. We all have our favorite look and more often then not can wear it perhaps to often. It is our comfort zone. As Meghan favors the boat neck, which by the way serves her well Kate leans to the deep V neck. I often have to look at Kate twice thinking her clothing is basically the same dress just a little tweeked.

      Delete
    4. I disagree. It's simply her style, just as Camilla and Kate have their coat dresses.

    5. Don't just limit that to Cam & Kate. I never thought I'd see Meghan in a fit & flare dress like this, she may at some point surprise us with a coat dress!? Who Knows??

  6. Oh no - the return of the dreaded black! It's a lovely dress but I can't help feeling more than a bit disappointed in today's look after the triumphs of recent appearances. Admittedly, bright yellow would be inappropriate here as well, but I really, really hope she ditches black for engagements where it's not necessary. A return to her favoured off-white would have been perfect for today. This is a rare recent miss for me. :( (And please please don't let her be arriving in Ireland later wearing this [crosses fingers]!)

    3. Yesterday's dress would have been perfect for today - and a repeat of a light pink or cream would have been perfect for the baptism yesterday - today is a miss IMO - agree boatneck is a bit tired

      Delete
    4. I see what you are saying Anon USA. But if she'd worn cream yesterday she'd have been accused of trying to pull focus from Kate and the baby. Pink and people would have said she didn't even realize Louis was a boy! So I'm happy for her to make her own color statements. Olive really is a hot color this summer where I live and today's dress is lovely on her IMO.

  10. It doesn't rock my world, but it's a good piece that can easily be reworn. Looks like it might be another custom though. If so, I can't really argue with people worrying about spending. It looks like her end of the year totals will be quite high.

Hope we get some new colors and necklines later today and tomorrow. Maybe even some trousers. Off the rack too.

    1. I think it's understandable as she's building her royal wardrobe. Meghan seems to be frugal and efficient. I'm sure we'll see repeats once she's been a member of the family for more than a couple months.

      Delete
    2. I expect her spending totals to be high, who wouldn't? This is an entirely new role for her with little opportunity to re-wear her existing wardrobe. Kate and other royal ladies often repeat outfits especially at solemn occasions, but they've been at this for years. In time Meghan will be able to do that as well, but this year she's going to have to build her wardrobe and it's going to be costly. She can't win as the constant breathless "reporting" of her crossed/slanted legs is an irritating example of. If she wears off the rack she's "common" or dresses aren't "elegant" and if she goes bespoke she's profligate. She's finding her way, always looks appropriate and stylish. Just think the balance this year is going to be on the custom [$$] and new side.

      Delete
    3. I think she's nailing this Duchess think left & right! Job well done!! :)

      Delete
    4. Of course she has to build her Duchess-ing wardrobe from scratch, and she’s only been at it for six weeks which is a bit soon to be looking for repeats. I think she’d do well to mix in some less expensive pieces, but it’s not my money to worry over.

      Delete
    5. @Juniper My feelings mostly match yours. It seems a misleading article about her spending was already circulated so, yes, I think adding some less expensive pieces to the rotation would be good and practical. I don't have any firm opinions on anything yet as it's barely been two months and she hasn't even announced her patronages, but speaking about the future this is what I hope for. If I'm to go farther there are people asking her to wear more UK designers, but the same brands, the ones worn by most of the royal woman are generally the only ones mentioned. There are so many more in the UK and the Commonwealth (I almost wish we could have a free for all discussion about it somewhere) and it would be cool if she could support emerging designers like Michelle O. with Jason Wu. But I don't even know what her staff is like right now and how she's choosing and planning these looks. It's only today that I see she's been working with a hairstylist lately. I assume she was doing at least some of those styles herself before the wedding.

    2. Beth, I wondered the same thing. Did she think it was a memorial-type service that meant everyone would be in black? Surely that sort of detail would be clarified in advance by someone in the team though. 21. I think it's meant to go with the uniforms. I think she looks gorgeous, particularly interested in her clutch. But I also wonder about the year end totals for all these and the fact that she seems to wear few British designers. Granted, more important for Kate due to her role, but still. That said, Meghan always looks perfect.

In my opinion Meghan'S look is another success! I've loved all that she has worn so far. Everytime is a nice surprise. Today I love it all! No problems with the boatneck line repetition, because she wears it wonderfully and she seems to be quite confortable with it. As for the colour, I like it either black or blue. The hat is superb. 32. Meghan's dress is definitely dark blue/navy and NOT black. Close-ups of her reveal this, when you see the blue color against her brunette hair. I love this dress, its something I could see myself in. I love a good boat neck - I struggle with dress Styles, but it's my go to as I always know it will be flattering. I generally wouldn't go as wide as Meghan does though. I do feel the dark colour is a little out of place with the other more summery outfits (even though I live this shase of navy). Perhaps more suited for an evening event? Love the hat too, and really love the shoes - a small pop of colour :)

Thanks for your detailed posts Charlotte - I teach WWII in History, and it's fascinating to hear a little more about the RAF. The way they fought was incredible (and still is!).

  38. Well I hope this glorious ensemble puts to rest the assumptions that her style hasn't evolved & that if Meghan were to somehow start dressing in the types of dresses or coat dresses, similar to the rest of the Royal Woman of The BRF that somehow it would be be a negative thing! Because here she is in a beautiful fit & flare dress with a matching tiny bow belt, carrying a clutch & wearing a fascinator. It's a superb outfit for The Duchess of Sussex & in a style that could have been worn by any of the women in The BRF. So it's not a bad thing if she dresses this way after all! The glowing comments are a joy to see. Her style will be her style. If some of her ensembles are in a similar vein to the other Royal Women, that's perfectly fine & not a sin! It's still Her Style!! Even if she someday wears a Coat Dress.......... it will still be Her Style!! Because whatever she wears is something she will have chosen & therefore will be Her Style! Her Style Has Evolved, Is Still Evolving & Will Continue To Evolve!! Bravo to HRH The Duchess of Sussex!! Another Home Run!!

Meghan's dress has that beautiful boat neck - would love to see a choker necklace at some point - and the fabric is amazing.

Good choice on the nude shoes. And loving the hat. All-in-all it's just very feminine and so different from yesterday. Looking forward to later today and arrival in Ireland. 47. Am I the only one who thinks this look is more (dark) navy then true black?

Oh my goodness, she is perfection today! The entire family looks fantastic.

  49. Beautiful and sophisticated. The Navy is probably a darker choice so as not to blend in with all the RAF blue around her. I guess it would have been beautiful in another stronger colour but maybe she’s thinking long term this is a good elegant classic to wheel out at several occasions.
I don’t mind the boat neckline - maybe this her signature statement she feels really confident in just as Catherine has a number of A.M. like today’s choice.
I do wonder the connection with more overseas designers rather than picking a British one but it will probably even out as she begins to build up her working wardrobe.

Great to see the Fab Four again and that Meghan is centred next to the Queen as nice touch.

Looking forward to seeing the Ireland shots tonight 👍🏼

    2. I actually think her Dark Navy goes the best with the RAF uniforms! I think it's the best accent of the group! :)

  50. Beautiful, classic, elegant. Love the hat! Can’t wait to see how she wears all these chic hats I’m the future!

  51. Great look today. Loving the hat and retro feel of dress. I do wish color was a bit brighter as it does look out of place amongst the brighter colors on the balcony, however, still love the overall look. Is it just me or does Meghan look a bit fuller in the face?

  54. Meghan looks nice today. Just a minor quibble with her hat, but everything else I like. The silhouette of the dress is good for her.

    ReplyDelete
  55. This silhouette is stunning on her frame! And love that she's trying on a new hat style--very becoming!

  56. The fit is nice, that's all the positive I can say about this piece.

  57. When I first looked at Meghan's dress today it immediately reminded me of a short version of her wedding gown. The lines are so similar. I have also revisited these great photos several times and I also think we are looking at a deep navy dress or as some designers call it blue/black depending upon how you accessories. Oh! No one wears a uniform better then Harry.

    ReplyDelete
  58. What a beautiful blue dress! Absolutely lovely on her and very appropriate for the occasion. I like her unique hat, too.

  59. I love this dress. I love the flared skirt -- IMO a welcome change from the midi-length pencil skirts she's been wearing. I don;t think the dress is black -- think it looks like a dark navy blue. And what a cute fascinator! Her outfit also coordinates so well with Harry's uniform.

As for the boat-neckline, I have a theory: Meghan is EXTREMELY narrow. You might say that she has a sort of stick figure, with few curves. I think the wider boatneck line gives the illusion of a curvier figure.

I agree with your theory! I may steal your theory for people constantly whining about her signature boat-neckline :)

    2. Good theory. I also think the full skirt on today's dress helps create a curvier silhouette. She's got a relatively short torso, and I suspect that's one of the reasons she favors monochromatic looks as that evens out her proportions.

  60. Meghan looks lovely in, yes, very deep navy. The dress is beautiful; only the darts from the waist up need to be better executed. I never quite understand fascinators, but this one is airy and pretty and suggests flight. I think the shoes should be dark navy. But British women do sometimes wear white shoes even with wool, and perhaps Meghan has noticed that. She looks quite beautiful, and comfortable with the royal family. On the balcony, Megan and Camilla flanked the Queen, Kate moving away from her place at Trooping. Very interesting arrangement. Harry must have said something very funny at one point. Wish we knew what it was!

  61. 100% perfection today! This might possibly be my favorite Meghan look so far. The color is appropriate and respectful for the event, the neckline is her signature but still tasteful for her role, the fit is perfect and the material is heavenly! She looks expensive, yet understated. And I LOVE her hat, hair, and makeup. The polished bun really works for Meghan. I'm glad she experiments with other hairstyles, like the sleek ponytail yesterday for the christening, but still has a great go-to updo for royal work.

And I do think the dress is a dark navy. I don't understand the complaints about color when Meghan clearly has been playing around with different hues, but still has her favorite classic neutrals. Also, with regards to her spending, I'm surprised people are already coming down on her for it. She's only been a royal for 2 months and has probably been building her wardrobe. Cut the girl some slack!

Perfectly said. I'm tired of people complaining about it all the time. It's like Meghan is not allowed to build her wardrobe with custom made pieces.

I really love the bateau necklines that Meghan wears.....so timeless and elegant but yet somehow seems like a fresh twist on that classic style of hers, probably because you don't see it that much in recent years. I used to wear that neckline a lot about 10+ years ago. It's really becoming her signature look, and I think it works well with her proportions. She has a wide torso (in proportion to the rest of her body - not in comparison to most other peoples'!), and the wide neckline balances that out.

  64. The video of the fly-by is really wonderful, rather emotional. And I noticed that Will and Kate kinda shuffled a bit to the right on the balcony so that MM and Harry could remain in their "behind" positions and still have a clear view. Very thoughtful.

  65. A lovely ensemble. Once again Meghan has chosen to blend into the background rather than stand out. Ironically by doing so she stands out.

I like it. I'm all for looking regal which Meghan does extremely well. But when it comes to a the fashionable elements I like to see differences and distinctive styles. She's got that! Do we really need to see another royal in a similar tone to every other royal in the box? Do we need to send in the clones? I say no thank you.

Thanks for the comment above with the hat resembling a moving propeller. I'm particularly fond of Meghan's light, gauzy choices with hats. She can go big but stay light and keep her face more visible. I'm surprised others haven't used that strategy ahead of her.

Not to say that the other ladies of the BRF do not look good, but whaou .... Meghan does know a lot about how to dress, and she likes fashion , she knows what a great material is , and that it works ever so well with simplicity when used with skill .... she is true to her style, her hats are really fashionable too , no flowery fuss or whatever ... she definitely brings true elegance , she does rock ! Yesterday was also a great choice !

  67. She looks utterly gorgeous!! I adore the hat and the stunning blue classy Dior dress!! The princes look handsome in their uniforms and Kate looks nice too thanks Charlotte

  68. I love the style that she has found... She totally rocks the boat neckline and the dresses she's chosen recently are gorgeous styles... I have a bit more trouble with the past couple of colour choices though... Kaki green and black...they seem so dull in comparison with her bubbly personality and for the season. But that's just my personal opinion. She is definitely very elegant and always beautiful though!

  69. Fantastic choices. Beautiful silhouette for her and the hat is my new favorite. Elegant, modern, simplicity. Glad to see Kate looking well and exchanging a few smiles and jokes with her new sister-in-law.

It's as if Harry, The Family & The Role have been waiting for her all these years... holding a place open just for her! That place fits her Perfectly!!! :) Warm Fuzzies All Around!! :) xo

  72. I like this one - it’s not my favorite but it’s a silhouette that is very lovely on her. I thought it looked like a dark blue in the outdoor photos it it does look black in the inside photos.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I love Patricia’s comment about the hat- that the design and material suggests flight. How whimsical and appropriate for the occasion! I also think that the transparency of the hat material balances the dense colour of the dress and lightens the whole look. I think Meghan’s hat just makes one smile today!

  74. I love her whole look except the shoes. Harry looks handsome and happy. A win all around. NLopez

  75. Perfect look except.... the hat....I know she has to wear one, and I will always think it ruins the overall effect. I am always surprised at how many commentators like her hats. I live in the US and the only occasion that causes women to wear hats is the Kentucky derby and Sunday at church by “church ladies” in both cases these are occasions not known for truly stylish, elegant women. Maybe it’s a European thing, but I have spent a fair amount of time in the UK, have British friends and they don’t wear hats (except winter ones for warmth). I have seen pictures of Catherine going to church on a private occasion not wearing a hat, so I’m hoping as time goes on Meghan will eschew them except for these very formal events.

  76. I love her look. The dress is a wonderful sophisticated design and style on her. The hat is really great. Love the purse. Lovely to see all the Royal Family, all the men and women really looked polished and lovely.

  77. Charlotte, one of the reasons I love reading your blogs is because I learn something new! The way you cover history, architecture, and the significance of the event is such a nice addition to the Duchess sightings and sartorial details. Thanks for the great post!

  78. Megan looks just amazing. I love how she picked Dior - also run by a female creative director (Maria Grazzia Chiuri). The colour of the beautiful dress is called "Navy French" (for real), and it is quite a specific shade. It works well with her complexion, IMO much better than black (everyone looks better in navy - in general, black is much harsher against any type of skin).

The best part is how radiant she looks and how happy Harry is to have her by his side. I hear in Dublin he said something that reminds me of Kennedy's comment when they visited Paris: ("I am the guy who accompanies Mrs Kennedy"); apparently Harry said "I am with her". That would show a great sense of humour, which I am sure he has.

All her looks today were very good, but this one was outstanding (per my earlier point, black looks harsh to me on Megan, but her evening Wickstead look was very elegant, no doubt and the green outfit was the perfect political choice (not a huge fan of the silhouette on that one, but it is her style). The only miss so far IMO was the olive Ralph Lauren yesterday, not because of the shape or fit, but the colour was a major NO for me. Plenty of excellent choices overall.

  79. WOW. What an elegant, perfectly pulled together look. The hat is stunning & just fabulous. Her hair impeccable, the dress so classic and tasteful, the shoes are the cherry on top. Everything is simply perfection. She looks smashing. I love Meghan's style. Loved watching the video too. The Royals are a fun family to watch when they interact. Thanks for a lovely post.

  80. Loved the dark navy color, it's one of my favorites.
    Loved the hat.
    Wasn't crazy about the dress.
The top fits her odd and the fit and flare was too casual for the occasion.

I'm also worried that folks are going to start looking askance at the cost of her wardrobe.
I know she has had to build a professional royal wardrobe quickly, and I know Prince Charles is paying for it, but a little less bespoke and a little more high street might help build some goodwill.

  81. Thank you Charlotte for this history lesson I learned a lot
Meghan was simply gorgeous in this classy and elegant outfit as often
I loved the moments of complicity between her and Harry and the pictures of the balcony

  82. Ahh...Dior! I’ve always wished Kate would wear one of their designs - & Meghan has made my wish come true :) She rocked this outfit! I’m absolutely loving the hat, too. She really looks divine in Dior. & like you, Charlotte, I hope this fashion relationship continues. I also wish I could’ve been in London for the flypast. What an amazing moment that would’ve been. I’m so jealous of florida girl right now haha
