Harry and Meghan Meet Inspirational Children at the Moving WellChild Awards!

It was a very special evening for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex who met some of the bravest children in the country at the WellChild Awards at The Royal Lancaster Hotel.

The Duchess arriving.

This evening provided the perfect opportunity for Harry to introduce a charity close to his heart to his wife. The Duke has been incredibly touched by the "inspirational" children and young people he's met since he became Patron in 2007. Speaking about their courage he said "Many of the children and young people WellChild support have been dealt the hardest card imaginable in life, and yet their courage inspires the most incredible strength in those around them." The annual Awards have become a staple on Harry's calendar. It is believed they were moved to an earlier date this year to accommodate Harry and Meghan's upcoming tour.

The WellChild Awards celebrate the inspiring qualities of some of the country’s seriously ill young people and the dedication of those who go the extra mile to keep children healthy and happy, including the outstanding health, social care and education professionals. The Awards has played a huge part in highlighting what these families need, and the support that is desperately needed to meet the ever-increasing demand.

Harry and Meghan joined guests for a pre-ceremony reception where they met the young winners of each award category and their families, and the nominated healthcare professionals.

The couple first met seven-year-old Matilda Booth.

Matilda has Spina Bifida and is paralysed from the chest down, she spent her early years in hospital and has had brain surgery seven times among more than 40 operations. "Despite all this Matilda has a great zest for life and impresses all she meets with her great courage, strength and determination. She never complains or feels sorry for herself and her mum says she has the biggest heart and smile ever. When she grows up she wants to be a nurse."

More from the Mail Online:

'Speaking after their meeting with Harry, who is patron of the charity, and his new wife, Matilda’s mother, Sharon, told MailOnline: ‘They were just so lovely. It was very exciting. Matilda had watched the royal wedding and was very nervous about meeting them but they completely put us at ease.
‘They got down to Matilda’s level and she gave Meghan a posy. But she took one out and handed it back to Matilda and told her to keep it in her memory box. She made her feel so special.
‘Prince Harry also made her give him a pinky promise and told her to never stop smiling. He told her she had such a lovely smile. They also wanted to meet Simon, her toy dog. She is inseparable from him.’ Prince Harry also joked to Matilda, ‘Are those flowers for me?’ Matilda was still clutching her rose and toy afterwards - with a beaming smile that went ear from ear.'

The video below has terrific footage of Harry and Meghan's meeting with Matilda.

Like Matilda, McKenzie Brackley is a recipient of one of the Most Inspirational Childs Award. Four-year-old McKenzie from Fife spent three months in intensive care aged two with Acute Flaccid Paralysis following a virus. He has since had to learn to speak, swallow, eat and drink and move again. "Despite his own problems Mckenzie cheers up everyone when they are low, and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.  He is there for other children when they are scared or sad, he has helped the hospital charity with their fundraising advertisements, and has inspired everyone he has met to never give up."

Rebecca English reports:

'His mother, Amy Brackley, said of their meeting with the royal couple: 'It was amazing.'They were so lovely. They knew he [Mckenzie] was scared of the cameras and they said they didn’t like the cameras either so they turned around. They said he was amazing and to keep going the way he is going and told him to look after me.
'He’s never going to forget this, even though he’s only four.'
At the event, Prince Harry revealed he loves the Lion King, whereas Meghan has 'always loved the Little Mermaid'. Meghan also recommended the 2016 Dreamworks film Ballerina and added: 'Harry likes it because she [the main character] has got red hair.'

Find out more about McKenzie's journey and his family below.

The Duke and Duchess with winner Cameron. The 16-year-old was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, and spent most of his first three years in hospital. He is now junior political editor for a magazine and has interviewed politicians at the Scottish and English Parliament.

The couple with Evie, who was born with Spina Bifida. Evie has now won several show jumping awards, and mentors young people with health problems to encourage them to get on in life.

Other winners included Scarlet Mathison who was awarded the Most Caring Young Person Award. The ten-year-old cares for her sister Freya who is three years older. Freya has complex conditions and is severely disabled. From an early age, Scarlett has shown a keen interest in being involved in the care of her older sister and now helps with everything from using her feed pump and operating her bed and hoist to helping her parents give medicines.

Chloe was born 10 weeks early and has cerebral palsy which left her unable to walk. In 2014 she became the first disabled child in the UK to pass her pre-primary ballet award with the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance.

Jacob cares for his sister Melissa, who has Angelman syndrome, which leaves her in need of 24 hour care. His determination and patience have resulted in Melissa learning first to crawl and then walk.

Melissa was delighted to meet Meghan.

Harry and Meghan met Jamie, who has a complex range of conditions, including CIPO which severely affects his intestines. Jamie has made astounding progress at his new school, and completed the 2017 Parallel London 1K Super Sensory Run in his walker.

Poppy has Panenteric Crohns Disease. Despite tiredness and nausea she works hard at school and participates in many clubs such as the writers and illustrators club, debate society and drama club and she is even learning Latin.

Prince Harry presented the Award for Most Inspirational Child and delivered a speech. "Every one of you is truly amazing. You have shown all of us what it means to be a champion – whether for yourself, your family, your community, or someone in need."

During his speech, Harry noted he is "especially grateful to be able to share the scope and magnitude of this work with my wife".

'I would like to thank all the families here this evening. The mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, and many other family members who are devoted to their children and are giving them the best care possible.  You are such fierce advocates for your children and in doing everything in your power to give your family the best chance at a happy life. It is quite simply amazing.
I would also like to pay tribute to the devoted nurses and volunteers across the UK who help give children and young people living with serious illness or exceptional health needs – a chance to be cared for at home instead of hospital.
And I want to acknowledge the young people who have been dealt the toughest cards imaginable – but who persevere, rise above, and set the example of living life to the fullest.  In fact you are often the ones who lift us up – your 'can-do' attitude and unwavering spirit serves as a constant reminder that we must always look to the positive and never give up.
For the past 40 years, WellChild has been identifying issues and finding long-lasting solutions so that families can care for and support their children at home in the very best possible way. I have been a patron of the organization for 11 years now, and this year I am especially grateful to be able to share the scope and magnitude of this work with my wife, who joins me here this evening.
The tremendous work of WellChild is ever evolving, and earlier this year WellChild published their new strategy to address priorities to keep up with the needs of young patients and their families.  From developing new national standards, and establishing new training centres, to developing new digital tools – WellChild is paving the way for the best in care for children and their families.
Scarlett, who has been sitting next to me while we have been watching these remarkably inspirational stories this evening, is an absolutely perfect example of exactly that why training for families is so incredibly important. At 10 years old, she plays a key role in caring for her sister Freya – and I know that there have been occasions when she has taken the lead in managing Freya’s feeding and oxygen when helping her Grandmother on the very rare occasions when her parents have taken a few much-needed hours for themselves.'

Harry and Meghan congratulate Matilda on her award.

Catching up with the winners.

A lovely moment between the Duchess and winner Jake. The 12-year-old has spinal muscular atrophy. Despite years of being told he couldn’t audition for theatre roles because of his disability, he didn’t give up and landed the lead role in Tom Fletcher’s The Christmasaurus last December.

The couple posed for official photos.

Donations will help support the garden and bedroom makeovers project. Families caring for a child with complex care needs often find that projects in the home go unfinished as time and finances are so stretched. Many children and young people live in homes which are not suitable for their needs. WellChild’s Helping Hands programme addresses this by using company volunteers to complete projects – making life at home safer. Below, a garden makeover for Kian.

A highlights video from the night.

The Duchess looked sophisticated and sleek in a black Altuzarra trouser suit for the evening. Meghan wore the Acacia One-Button Blazer which features a fitted silhouette, straight hem and notched collar. It retails at Neiman Marcus for $1595.

The jacket was teamed with Altuzarra's High-Waisted Boot-Cut Wool Pants.

The brand confirmed via Twitter.

Underneath, Meghan wore the silk Deitas Coco camisole.

Gabi identified Meghan's bag as the Stella McCartney Shaggy Deer Faux Leather Crossbody Bag. It's described as: "Diamond-cut chains outline a neatly organized flap bag crafted in Italy from shimmering, lightly textured faux leather." It's available at Nordstrom.

Gabi also identified Meghan's shoes as the Aquazzura 'Simply Irresistible' pumps.

The Duchess accessorised with the pearl and diamond earrings the Queen gave her.

The Duchess first wore them for a day of engagements in Chester with Her Majesty in June.

And both Harry and Meghan sported pins with the WellChild logo.

The WellChild Awards are an inspirational and enormously moving night. They are a highlight on the royal calendar year after year and the decision to hold them earlier than planned to ensure the Sussexes could attend is a testament to the dedication Harry's shown the charity over the past decade.

It obviously meant the world to the children and young people awarded to have the royal couple there and made the night all the more special for the amazing families involved. When we discuss the Royal family, we often think of the pomp, pageantry, fashion and jewels. What the monarchy is really and truly about is connecting with communities, celebrating the best of Britain and making memories. I have no doubt Harry and Meghan felt privileged to be a part an unforgettable evening for a group of wonderful youngsters who have displayed such resilience, courage and positivity in the face of unimaginable challenges. The event was undoubtedly a highly emotional one. Lizzie Robinson reports Harry told a winner Meghan "would definitely cry tonight". The event marked the beginning of her relationship with WellChild. She's a natural with children and did a fabulous job with each person she met.

On Thursday, The Duke and Duchess will attend 100 Days to Peace, a gala music evening in aid of Heads Together, Help for Heroes and Combat Stress. The one-off concert at Central Hall will mark the centenary of the end of the first World War. The event is scheduled to start at 7.30 pm.

  1. Beautiful trouser suit that makes it all not about her; occasionally I wish she would do more color. Maybe the children would like it.

  3. Meghan looks nice but the CAUSE for the visit really outshines the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Look at the lovely Matilda. Omgosh!!!! That is soooo precious. Thanks, Charlotte. I’m already enjoying what I’m seeing.

    1. I agree. It's such a great patronage for Harry, and very glad he brought Meghan along. The kids are amazing; it's such a good perspective builder to see what they have done with their lives. And giving that little girl a rose for her memory box was a lovely gesture.

  4. At first glance love this sleek suit! It actually looks like something Meghan would have worn as Rachel on "Suits." I like that since this is a children's charity event she looks professional but approachable, and not like a princess. Good to see she hasn't dropped her personal style since she's become a Duchess. Most of all you can see in the video what a good royal ambassador she is. She's very warm and empathetic. This is definitely in the "love" column for me.

    1. Ivy Lin - these were my thoughts too! She looks professional but not distracting enough to take the focus off of the adorable and happy children being honored! (And, I actually love the satiny blouse which provides some contrast and texture to the suit.) I hope that the media will give the focus to the event - as they should - rather than, OMG the Duchess is in all black!

I'm definitely starting to feel like this will be her pattern: working events like this will be simple but classic outfits, minimal jewelry. Family events with more senior royals, like the garden party or trooping, will be next level fashion. Then really formal events, like state dinners, is where I'm predicting we'll see the big glamour or fancy gowns, tiaras, bigger jewels.

Also? I LOVE that she is wearing trousers and they fit her perfectly! As Theresa J says below, Meghan's legs DO look a mile long. They are basically as long or maybe longer than Harry's!

    2. We are all eagerly anticipating that wondrous event, but I don’t think so. News accounts of her very recent trip to Toronto stated that she enjoyed a glass of champagne on the flight. I am certainly not pretending to know her, but I sort of doubt she would do that if she were pregnant...

    ReplyDelete

    1. Because she likes it? Because it's chic? Because she doesn't want the focus to be on her wardrobe at an event like this? Because she's building a professional wardrobe that she'll be able to use for years going forward? Because she looks amazing in black? So many reasons...

  19. She looks gorgeous. The pantsuit has great movement I think it makes her legs look fantastic. If I were to change anything, I would have had her wear a more colorful top!

  22. I think she looks amazing. The pant suit is a great idea for an event where she’s crouching down to get at eye level with the children. Also good to see her wearing properly hemmed trousers!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good point re: trousers good for when you'll be crouching. I hadn't thought of that although it's obvious now!

      Delete
  23. I think a spot of color is needed here. The event is a celebration, not a memorial. I also think the pants are too flared, but they're extremely well hemmed, so at least there's that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Although I really like the cut of this suit and it’s a a nice change to see a top in a different material, I think it would be nice if she started to mix up her colours. There are some really nice different coloured trouser suits out there and I hope her style doesn’t become too predictable. Whether we like it or not, interesting clothes and jewellery worn on engagements often draw the public to the issue being explored in that engagement, so I just hope people don’t become too used to her fashion and therefore miss out on her philanthropic work.

    1. I agree with everything you've said! Your last point is a good one: some people think royal fashion watching is frivolous but I'm sure a lot more attention is brought to the causes royals support because of royal fashion blogs. Although I wouldn't necessarily call Charlotte's blogs as mainly fashion (although you might not think so after all the recent mega and wonderful Styling Kate posts on the other one!)

  25. I'm a bit torn on this, cause on the one hand, she looks AMAZING in this, and I get her desire to keep the focus on the kiddos. On the other hand, for the kiddos' sake, I wish she'd gone a little "princessier", if that makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, definitely an occasion where she could have gone for a bit for a fairytale princess look to delight the children, but I don't think that's her style at all (her style is sleek and elegant and perfect for her). I once read about one of the Swedish (I think) princesses who invited children (orphans? or sick? can't remember) round to the palace for a tea party and she wore a gown and tiara and it was so cute. Obviously that would be totally out of place here but some of that kind of magic effect would be nice - not that Meghan doesn't bring enough magic just with her presence!

      Delete
    2. Yes! I remember that! It was like 8-10 sick little girls who were invited to. Tea party with a princess. It was one of the Swedish princesses...but I can’t remember which one.

      Delete
    3. It was Princess Madeleine and the event was for a Swedish 'Make A Wish' Foundation for sick children:

    5. That would be nice Lauri-- like what Madeleine did for sick kids. Full on dress-up time!

    6. Oops. Was reading comments from the bottom up. I see Madeleine was already mentioned. Sorry!

    7. If not 'princessier', at least more fun?

      Delete
    8. I would love for Meghan and Kate to take a page from Madeline’s book and host a “princess” event. It would be fun and they could bring Charlotte like Madeline brought Leonore.

We know Meghan has access to a tiara (hello stunning wedding tiara!) and Kate has worn some pretty fabulous ones so they could totally pull it off.

      Delete
  26. I've been looking at the pictures that Kensington Palace is posting from the event, and now I'm jumping on the bandwagon that this suit wasn't right for the occasion. Most of the kids and their moms/caregivers are dressed in party dresses, so Meghan's all-black suit looks a little off.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with your thoughts, Sarah. I appreciate how beautiful and fierce Meghan looks at this occasion. I think it is a wonderful look and I appreciate the way she styled it. I just don't think it was quite the right look for this particular event.

      Delete
    2. I agree. It's a great outfit on Meghan and I hope we see it again. But perhaps it was not the best choice for an event with children. It also appears to be a daytime event, not an evening event.

I do likely the length of the trousers as I wasn't a fan of the trendy floor-dragging "puddling" length she's worn before.

      Delete
    3. The pre reception started at 5:30pm so it was an evening event.

I don't understand how a pantsuit keeps the focus on the event. Would we be paying attention if Harry and Meghan weren't there? I don't think we would, so it *is* about Meghan! And the fact that this conversation is going on means we are't focusing on the event at all, but rather what she wore.

Personally, I liked the pant suit. (And I LOVE the bag!) But I don't get the uproar. Kate got flack for wearing black to visit kids too. As long as both of them get their jobs done, and don't look totally stupid doing it, I don't understand the commotion. It's really just personal taste, right?

What I think is amazing is how well they work together as a team, and how both of them seem so genuine in their interactions with the children. It's really lovely to see.

      Delete
    4. It is not only personal taste. Black is a mourning color and those children are fighting death. It seems an awkward choice. Not that she doesn't look beautiful and stylish, she does. And she got her job done and did it well. Only it was an insensitive choice.

      Delete
    5. Black is not the mourning color everywhere . Lets not generalize without knowledge of how it is in other countries. Insensitive and awkward - really? I think people here dont understand that a lot of thought and consultation goes into deciding these outfits for these occasions. Black is not your preference - we get that but don’t attribute such snarky intentions without any basid

      Delete
    6. I agree bluhare it is a matter of personal taste.

      H. Not everyone views black as a mourning colour, I personally see black as a perfect back drop. Not for a second of that event was the focus about death, so how was Meghan insensitive?

Meghan's black suit did not compete with any of the beautiful clothing that the children, family or carers wore, which is who the event is for, and the focus was on them the whole time.

      Delete
    7. A black pantsuit is an insensitive choice? Insensitive? Are you serious?

      Delete
    8. I am serious. Those who don't mind never understand that others do mind. Being sensitive is being able to put yourself in other's place even if you don't share their feelings. It was obvious that all black could be seen as a funeral attire, not only elegant and chic. Not the idea one wants to raise when visiting seriously ill children. If I noticed it, there is a chance some of the parents did. Why take the chance? Better be too cautious and try and understand sensibilities than not cautious enough.

      Delete
    9. Appreciate your point. However, I think that calling her suit insensitive is missing the point because that event is not about death and mourning, but about living your life well. I think that being genuine with the children, giving a little girl a rose for her memory box, and talking with everyone is much more important than what she had on while doing it.

But that's my opinion. And obviously we disagree. Fair enough.

      Delete
    10. PS just saw a photo of a man in a black tux at the event. The mc perhaps. Was he insensitive too?

      Delete
  27. I wish she had either a fun necklace on OR the top wasn't black too. I mean honestly, I wish she was in a dress, mostly because it gives me more fantasy shopping material (and this also seems like an event to lean in to the princessy thing), but she looks great in pantsuits. But I do think it was missing some color or sparkle up top.

    ReplyDelete
  28. What a wonderful event. Harry is just right for this role as patron. He is wonderful with these children. Well done

    ReplyDelete
  29. The focus of the evening was the wonderful children and their achievements. Meghan was dressed smartly for the occasion and in a manner that allowed the children and their stories to take center stage. Perhaps the pants allow her to escape the vicious body shaming she endured on this message board and across social media.

  31. I too wish that she had worn a kicky cocktail dress, even if it were in a dark color, like the dress she wore when she spoke to the U.N. or even something in a jewel tone. It does look very 'on my way to a business meeting,' rather than to a benefit.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You know that all those little girls would love to see a princess look like their idea of a princess, I remember the children were disappointed when Kate visited a school in trousers and a top. Those kids wore their best, probably new, party dresses for this and Meghan looks like she’s going to an office party. At least some colorful accessories would have saved this for me, shoes or bag in a bight pink or some funky, modern jewelry or something.

Harry and Meghan were so caring with the kids, they talk with them in a relaxed one on one basis, and were so relaxed and calm. They are a great team. For me, it would have been nice if Meghan wore a white or light grey top, but anyway, it wasn't about clothes at all.

  34. I am getting the impression that Meghan tries to be as a little self-effacing in situations when she is at an event to help celebrate others. She doesn't make herself stand out with sparkle and colour, and therefore is not competing with the lovely party dresses of the children and their mothers. Certainly she stands out because she is the only one that is wearing an all black pantsuit which she has made formal with the silk top and evening purse. However, she is not outsparkling everyone whose evening it is to sparkle. All that being said, I hope she brings a bit of glitz to the gala concert on Thursday which is an occasion to which she is expected to bring some sparkle.

  35. What an amazing charity which supports such incredibly brave and strong children! I was impressed by Harry's speech. Meghan and Harry both interact so well with children, and I'm sure these children were thrilled to see them.

I love this outfit! I like the flare of the trousers and the jacket. It fits her very well and she looks very smart. I would love to see her wear this another time. BUT I don't think it was right for this event. It's a corporate look. These wonderful children are all dressed up in their party clothes and Meghan looks like she's dropped in after a board meeting. I think a more celebratory outfit was in order, and I don't think that would detract focus from the event itself - just more colour or sparkle

These precious children have faced so many battles & even more to come. Do any of you have any idea how hard it is to survive 40 surgeries? There’s never a guarantee for any surgery that you’ll survive it, that’s more important than anything either Meghan or Harry could’ve chosen to wear. They both looked stylish, focused on the the children & made them deservedly happy! The children, caregivers & volunteers certainly deserve every good thing!

But the joy she has when she interacts with people is the real winner. It’s still a bit stiff when she is first greeting people(when she walks into the event) but once she’s engaging with people within the event - outstanding. I don’t think any of the little girls would have been sad if she went a bit more ‘princessy’ but I also think her warmth and care with people made up for the lack of party dress.

  39. The royal rumour-mill is always churning out some nonsense which is easily discounted. I will say that her predilection for black (totally understandable for a city dwelling actress) is a bit out of step with what is favored by most of the female royals, mostly because they know people are there to see them and they want to stand out to respect that. I don't see her in any kind of crazy color but even a chocolate brown or olive green would provide some heightened visibility. The pantsuit itself is perfect for the event--who wants to squat in a skirt?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I love the pantsuit & I agree with you - it was perfect for the event. She looked professional, respectful & comfortable. I also agree that a chocolate brown or olive green would’ve looked nice, but that’s a minor quibble from me.

  40. Her working style seems to be taking cues from Queen Letizia of Spain. It's a great match for her established style preferences, and I'd love to see her stick with it. Leti takes some risks with color and pattern, and I'd like to see Megs "go there" as she gets more comfortable in her role.

I might have gone with a white shell with small polka dots, though. The black is a bit unrelieved.

    1. She does seem to be going in the direction of Queen Letizia. I do hope Meghan experiments with colour & patterns, as well.

  41. She was born to wear pantsuits and this one fits her perfectly but if she's going to wear head to toe black she needs some jewelry for contrast. Nothing ostentatious, no gems. Modern silver would do nicely.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think her preference is for yellow gold rather then silver. I remember hearing Harry say that is what she likes in their engagement interview. It caught my attention as that is my preference as well. I would like to see her in more of a statement earring but as the fashion forward girl she is that particular style of jewelry is currently not on trend. However, I am sure that within the RF jewelry collections there will be some wonderful pieces to borrow. I do hope she sticks to studs rather then drop earring. Drops have become so out dated except for hoops. It always amazes me that it is the only style earring Kate wears and has even had Diana's earring converted.

      Delete
    2. @USA Granny: That's funny that you say "drops have become so outdated except for hoops", because I think hoops look incredibly tacky and outdated. When I see hoops, I think of early/mid-2000s tackiness, which is very outdated to my eyes.

      Delete
  42. Meghan looks good in this outfit, but I really hate it for this event. This is a party for children, not an office cocktail party. At least adding some jewelry would elevate the look. Those wedding reception Cartier earring would have been fabulous with this and we know she owns them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I wish she would wear more colour. Especially at such an event that is meant to be a celebration.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think it goes with her feminist orientation - she doesn't have to be overtly feminine. And, in a way, she's letting Kate inhabit the traditional princessy role.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So glad this suit fits her perfectly and her pants are not dragging on the ground (has that trend died yet?) Really wanted a pop of colour though. And for Harry to wear a different coloured suit!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don’t know if my last comment posted or not - I don’t see it but my phone froze so I have no idea if it was actually submitted or not.

I love this look as I do most of Meghan’s choices. Her style is close to my own so I think that’s why I love so many of her clothes. I will say I wish she had worn different earrings. I don’t particularly like this pair. I think a larger stud earring or a longer drop earring would have looked better with this look.

I love that she doesn’t stand out but rather blends in as others have mentioned - the focus is on the organization and children and not so much on her. I think it’s a smart move, intentional or not.

    1. Alaina, I agree. I think it’s great that she didn’t stand out too much here. Her beautiful smile shone through during her interactions with these amazing, brave kids & the focus was on them - not what she was wearing.

  48. She looks utterly charming...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. What I mean is, we've seen this look from her many times before. And if this is her go to, fine. But she could jazz it up a little.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This is true to Meghan's style. There are interviews all over the internet where she talks about her preference for monochromatic looks and minimal jewlery. I also doubt Meghan views her role as that of a traditional princess. She's far more likely to view it as that of First Lady that she is more familiar with as an American. As Harry and her have described they are team, and that's what they look like as partners together in their suits.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Really well stated. I have no expectation of her looking any different then as we see her. As you have said she herself has said that her preference is for monochromatic looks leaning towards classics and timeless attire.

  50. I think she looks sharp. But it's almost too cautious, too workwear. A pop of color might've done.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Wonderful event. Harry must be so proud to have Meghan there with him. She shines and is such a natural with those children. It was classy of her to tone down her look and keep the attention on the event and VIPs. I don't much like boot-cut pants or the texture of the top against the blazer. She does look polished, though.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The Duchess looks lovely, as usual, and I have nothing against her choosing to wear a trouser suit, but the all-black look she has chosen here looks so sombre. I could wish she had decided to go with a coloured suit maybe - there are some stunning ones around at the moment in cerise, blush, blue you name it - that would have looked equally great on her, and worked with her black top. Or some bigger jewellery?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Meghan looks fabulous but I agree with others, she needs to add a serious pop of color to her wardrobe!! I'm already starting to think she may wear black again on Thursday :-(

  54. A wonderful event for the Sussex’s. I appreciate how genuinely sincere and involved they are. But I’m disappointed in Meghan’s outfit, even though she looks beautiful as always. . I have begun to excitedly look forward to Meghan’s next appearances hoping to be wowed by her outfit, just like I do for Kate. But this all black on black was a major letdown. There was no reason to wear all black for an event dealing with children. This looks like aNew Yorker going to a cocktail party. The last photo with all the ladies made Meghan stand out not in a good way. I liked three of the ladies dresses better than Meghan’s pants, and frankly, would be glad to wear any of the three to my daughters upcoming wedding(in fact, the top of one lady’s black and white dress is very similar to the dress I will be wearing).

    1. I see the point people are making that Meghan looked professional and did not want to be the center of attention. Having said that, it may have been nice for her to wear something other than black.

Perhaps, it is the RN in me, but all black reminds me of funeral and I don't care for the association around chronically and seriously ill children. I am a fan of Meghan, but something a little more "princess" may have been special for the children in attendance. Not over the top, but a dress would have been nice. Remember the tea party given by Princess Madeleine? While a gown is out of the question, Madeleine in her gown may have seemed very princess to the little ones.

I guess I remember a young girl attending my wedding shower and she was so disappointed when I showed up and I was not wearing a wedding gown. I felt terrible I had let her down.

    2. The thing to do is explain to the young girl what a wedding shower is and tell her that a wedding gown is for the actual ceremony.

  56. Charlotte, your fashion break-down, as always, superb.

But your summary/reporting on the amazing awardees? AMAZING. The best break down I've seen of the actual REASON for the event, better than the royal reporters. Thank you for well highlighting these amazing children and their lovely families.

Meghan looks stunning. I do think color would have been better though. I think this same exact pantsuit in bright pink or blue would have been a knock-out. But her smile and connection to the children and families is wonderful. Great speech by Harry too!

  57. I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I'm thrilled that Meghan is so relaxed, natural, and approachable on her engagements. That in itself makes her stand out from the rest of the RF, except for Harry, of course! On the other hand, I'm so tired of the messy bun and the way she's always brushing hair away from her face. And black-again! Would have been neat to see a tank that matched the color of Harry's suit.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love Meghan's outfit and IMO pantsuits are more flattering on her than dresses. But I do think she and Harry look mismatched here; her suit says sophisticated evening look and his says daytime engagement. And I guess I'm on board with those who wish she had avoided all black for an event with children. I am imagining this suit in red, soft pink, ice blue, or winter white....etc.

I am come to accept that Meghan loves her dark and neutrals. This suit looked amazing on her but I do long for some color in the future. Though she rarely wears it that when she does it is like an event. Haha. Anyways she looked great and the kids seemed to really be excited to meet her.

I felt it on the last post too, there is just something more settled about her and she has a certain look in her eye, that extra sparkle and more confidence, and possibly relief?! I imagine there would be great pressure, on top of personally wanting to get pregnant, but then having the world hold their breath to see when/if it happens! could be wrong but she just seems more...secure (maybe), hard to find the right word for it!!

The best suit I have seen Meghan in so far. Neat, not too big, long or bulky, just sleek and lovely. Personally, I might have added a cream or grey camisole and some colour somewhere, but hey.. no biggie. Her engagement with the people she meets is amazing. I bet Meghan and Harry go home and just marvel at all the beautiful children they meet, hopefully over a good glass of red!

Gréât to see Meghan wearing trouser suit , she looks great ! Like some of you I would’ have liked a bit of’ colour .... but the children and all those attending do not seem to mind about that ! It must be very difficult for sensitive persons like Meghan and Harry to spend a long time smiling and talking to those poor children and’ their careers and families , I suppose M and H do share strong emotions when they are back home , they must a the same time be proud to draw the public attention on those people , and’ specially on the mental and physical strength of those little’ ones . Makes us, ordinary people with ordinary problemes (most of’ us , I mean, I know that some of you do cope with difficulties) put things back to the right place and réalise we have a lot to enjoy every day .

  66. Some random comments: Harry is very, very good looking.
    Meghan's outfit was sensational.
There has been discussion about the speed of their courtship and marriage contrasting it with William's and Kate's. I think that when you know you've found the right one, why dillydally? After all, they're both in their thirties and know what they want. My husband and I knew at 18 and 20 after two dates and married 13 months later. That was 57 years ago.
And finally, I hope they are able to have fine, healthy children.

    1. You're right, and part of that confidence may also be because they appear to be completely committed to being married and having their chosen life together. I imagine they have had many talks about what they want from marriage, and when you agree on that and add love, it should work.

  67. The focus should be on the children and Well child not on what Meghan is wearing or what her hair looks like. Don't care if she is wearing color or not. Meghan is her own person and wears what she wants. I am so proud of them. I must say if Harry had not married Harry, I would not be paying attention to this. I think their marriage is bringing a new group of people to follow their charities. I did not know the royals were doing such great work. Love Harry and Meghan. Love this site.

  68. They both look stylish and appropriate for the occasion....and I don't mind the 'uniform' because then the focus can (rightfully) move to event and, in this case, those absolutely praiseworthy children. Harry and Meghan are to be admired for the naturalness and fluidity that they display in their every interactions. Watching them, is truly mesmerizing, meeting them must be unforgettable.

  69. Thank you Charlotte, for the always, excellent write up of M&H events. You are a welcome respite from the false praise, unjust criticism of other publications. Thanks to their Meghan propaganda campaign, I no longer read the gutter press or even the so-called women's magazine's-who have shown their willingness to engage in not too subtle shade throwing, all for the clicks.
Also THANK you for never 'age shaming' Duchess Meghan. I am tired of other reporters' inability or unwillingness to write stories about M&H without mentioning their ages. Heaven forbid that we should forget that DM's older. With publications obsession with comparing Duchess Meghan to Duchess Kate, I never see Kate's age mentioned (with is the way it should be and a courtesy that Meghan deserves) I'm guessing that if Harry were the older one...his age wouldn't be worth a mention. The sexism is real

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's a journalism convention to include the age of the people you're writing about in your article. That's why news articles include Meghan's age in most articles. They do the same with Kate, William, and Harry. It has nothing to do with "age shaming" and everything to do with following journalism conventions.

      Delete
    2. I did read about it being journalistic convention (google was my friend :-). But, I think by this time we know who the Duchess of Sussex is--age identifier is not needed. I only started reading "gossip' publications' after the engagement..and my interest is H&M-centric...there is frequent mention of other royals, but I've only seen Meghan and Harry's ages (with the occasional mention of the Queen's age)
So, based on my observation, I don't think journalism convention is the motivation, when it's so (H&M) specific rather than general practice. I appreciate your reply, Leslie

  70. The Duchess of Sussex is a minimalist in her fashion style so you may not get too much jazz. I thinks she looks lovely and confident in her personal selections. To add some color is not a bad move but she is lovely this evening. What a wonderful inspiring evening it has been. Thanks Charlotte for sharing it with us.

  72. She can sure rock a suit! I even like the head-to-toe black because there's enough detail with the different material of the cami to make it interesting. Her "messy" bun softens the look too. Like has been said so many times she knows what she likes and sticks with it despite how much others may suggest or complain. If your hoping for her to change, don't hold your breath. The kids and parents looked so happy when she and Harry interacted with them, I don't think they were disappointed that she didn't show up in a frilly princess confection. Rock on Meghan!

  73. Agree with most of the comments here. It is a fabulous pant suit. Perfect fit, super stylish, love the details. But some color - given this is an event with children would have been nice. Why not a bright pair a heel instead of the black? I don't have many colored heels but I do have some glittery ones, yellow and pale pink. An earrings that bring some pop! My 2-cents.

  75. She looks amazing but I have to say, I’m just not as excited to see her when she constantly wear black. It’s very chic but ends up looking boring after a while. I know it is her style but if my best friend wore black to every occasion she went to, I would think there was something wrong with her. We all wear a certain amount of black especially for evening occasions but we mix it up, life is in colour. Colour can lift your spirits, it can change your appearance. I just don’t get the endless black. Sinead

  76. I love them interacting with the children. ❤️Harry really has Diana’s gift for warmth with people! He picked a perfect wife who has the same warmth and ease with children and adults. I love the fit and design of this pantsuit. I wish there was a small pop of color like many of us here. I also wondered why she did not wear a dress, but the pants make it easier for her to bend over, or maybe hold a child on her lap if the occasion for it had come up.

  80. After reading the comments, I looked back through the pictures. It seemed to me that the adults were purposely in darker colors, often black, so that the girls stood out in their bright party dresses. Meghan seemed to fit right in to that scheme. I was struck when I watched the welcome video by the lovely flare of her blazer and graceful trousers. She looked very nice, and her carriage and walk are beautiful. I don't think she is pregnant, judging by the way she walks and the glass of champagne. I do think she might be slightly self conscious, given all the speculation! Most of all, Harry and Meghan are great with children, even given the severe problems he alluded to when he said there would be tears tonight. I have always thought events like this are hard on Kate; they will also touch Meghan's heart.
