Meghan Praises Harry's "Devotion" to Coach Core During Awards!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined more than 200 apprentices for the Coach Core Awards at Loughborough University in Leicestershire today.

The Evening Standard reports the couple have just returned from a weekend in Amsterdam. "At a Saturday night birthday feast for Jones at Cecconi’s, guests dined on lobster spaghetti and tiramisu. They also had a lavish Sunday brunch, as well as pampering treatments at the Cowshed spa. Their itinerary included a guided tour of the city’s red-light district on Friday night — not attended by the royals — and a boat trip down the city’s canals."

Upon arrival, the couple got straight into the sporting spirit...

...with a netball passing drill.

The Telegraph reports: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have gone head to head for the first public sporting challenge of their marriage, as they join youngsters for netball training. Joining two teams made up of teenagers on the Coach Core programme for a masterclass, they threw and caught netballs in a fast-paced game to help their new team mates score. As they finished and awaited the final scores, which saw the Duke's team win, they embraced in a hug before setting off to learn more about the programme."

A very sweet moment between the pair.

Established by the Royal Foundation in 2012, Coach Core aims to harness the power of sport, and its ability to change lives and empower young people. Driven by a desire to build upon the legacy of the Olympic Games, Coach Core was created by the Royal Foundation to inspire young people who are not in education or employment through sport, and create the next generation of sports coaches who will themselves go on to inspire their communities for many more generations to come.

Today Coach Core trains hundreds of young people across the UK through its scheme, which connects apprentices with the biggest sports clubs in the country. The apprentices learn technical sport skills alongside an inclusive and holistic approach to coaching, with an emphasis on employability and mentoring skills. Coach Core is proud to have transformed the lives of its apprentices with 98% of its graduates now being in full-time employment or education, and 80% retain strong ties with their employers and continue to engage in community sport. Apart from qualifications, participants gain the opportunity to grow, support from a network of professionals and the chance to develop personal qualities including leadership and confidence.

Meghan enjoyed the drills.

A video from the pre-awards meetings and drills.

Loughborough was an excellent choice for the awards. Sport has always been at the heart of the University since the creation of the College in 1909. Staying true to its founders vision (Herbert Schofield) that sport at Loughborough should play a part in each and every students life on campus. Over the years this has developed to encompass not just students but elite athletes, national governing bodies, the local community and of course in 2012 the official preparation camp for TEAM GB ahead of the Olympic Games. Loughborough has been named University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times University Guide 2019.The prestigious accolade recognises the very best universities in Britain.

The Duke and Duchess met some of the apprentices as they participated in team games, before meeting this year's graduates.

The Mail Online reports:

'Isa Abdou, 20, who also met the duchess in March, said: 'She was really excited to see how we had progressed.'
She said Meghan gave her team a pep talk urging them not to be nervous: 'She told us to just be comfortable and relax, and she joked saying 'it's a competition, but not a competition'.'

The day included masterclasses from sports stars such as marathon runner Paula Radcliffe, British tennis star Laura Robson and England netballer Eboni Beckford-Chambers. Apprentices participated in sports training and mentoring before the awards ceremony.

Today's royal visit coincides with fantastic news for Coach Core. Patricia Treble revealed Sport England has awarded the Royal Foundation a £1 million national lottery grant to double the reach of the programme. It's going to be invaluable in terms of expanding the programme across the country.

At the awards ceremony hosted by Jake Humphrey, graduates, new joiners and other apprentices celebrated their achievements in categories including Community Outreach Project of the Year, Graduate of the Year, Mentor of the Year, Educator of the Year and Apprentice of the Year. Meghan presented the Graduate of the Year award to Sebastian Vidal.

Meghan praised Harry's incredible work and dedication to the programme. "The Duchess said: "My husband has devoted so many years to Coach Core and in the past year of my being in the UK to be able to see not just the impact but the incredible inspiration and sense of purpose that this instills in people is astounding."

Harry presented the Apprentice of the Year award to a thrilled Kayleigh Batt before closing the event with a speech.

Prince Harry said:

“Being a coach isn't just about helping an individual get active, or training the next person who's going to become a world record holder. “It's so much bigger than that. It's about being a role model; it's about being professional, relatable and inspiring.”
Sport does not discriminate. But lack of support and barriers to access do, which is why the role of Coach Core fostering this raw talent is absolutely vital. “Sport can inspire and invigorate, and as we have seen today, with the right opportunity, the right mentoring and the right focus, lives can be changed.”

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.

The Duchess looked stylish in a gorgeous navy Oscar de la Renta blouse.

The draped blouse features a v-neckline with a tiered asymmetrical peplum waist. The piece is currently sold out.

The brand confirmed via Twitter.

Meghan teamed the blouse with the Altuzarra High-Waisted Boot-Cut Wool Pants she wore for the WellChild Awards earlier this month. The trousers retail for $795 at Neiman Marcus.

Meghan Maven identified Meghan's necklace as the £295 Pascale Monvoisin Cauri N°2 9-karat rose gold, onyx and diamond necklace. It's available at Net-A-Porter.

Made in France, the piece is described as: "Pascale Monvoisin draws inspiration from all aspects of her life - she spends her time traveling across the globe, visiting art exhibits and antique shops along the way. Handmade from 9-karat rose gold, this 'Cauri N°2' necklace features a shell pendant carved from 0.53-carats of glossy onyx that's inlaid with a dainty 0.01-carat diamond."

The Duchess accessorised with her Catbird stackable rings.

We'll see Meghan undertake a solo engagement tomorrow. The Duchess will attend the opening of ‘Oceania’ at the Royal Academy of Arts. ‘Oceania’ is the first ever major survey of Oceanic art to be held in the United Kingdom.

    3. I very much doubt they'll be trying to get pregnant before their tour in October. One of the places they're visiting has had occurrences of the Zilka virus in believe. And even just in general, that would be a grueling tour to undertake while pregnant and possibly dealing with morning sickness and other pregnancy related issues such as exhaustion.

Accidents DO happen, but I say no way, especially because of the Zika scare.

First thing I thought Theresa J! Can't help it if I'd like to see another royal baby and I don't see anything wrong with speculating about something happy on a couple! My baby is the greatest thing that's ever happened to me, I wish that kind of joy on anyone wishing to have a baby- as they have stated they wish for.

    1. I agree Caroline, Harry looks great. It's like he and William decided to not wear their Windsor blue yesterday! On the Tusk Trust website, Williams kick-off to his trip, he is wearing a black jacket and pants!! They are handsome young men.

  8. Sure enough she wore blue! I saw a question on a news site, "will she wear Leicestershire Live blue?"

I like this outfit. Looks like new heels and a new necklace. Figured she would wear slacks given they are Coach observing masterclasses for the Coach Core apprentices. Super cute! And yet her outfit will transfer to the awards very nicely as well.

  9. My first thought when I saw this top was "Oh no, here comes the speculation...is she or isn't she?" I'm not really a fan of anything with a flounce, a peplum, or lots of extra fabric so I'll pass on the top, however, Meghan wears those Altuzarra trousers exceptionally well. I am wondering why no one advised her in advance that heels on a gym floor is not done. Lastly, after hearing Meghan speak at the cookbook event last week I have a new found admiration for her. She is poised, self-confident, and very caring. Despite what others may say, I believe she is the real deal. I hope that the trolls will one day come to realize this as well. She has a tough road ahead and I wish her well.

BethNY, I am in agreement with you. Because she was an actress, I had, well, A LOT of doubt in her, and really didn't know how I felt about her being true to who she said she was and playing a part. The whole way she approached the "Hub", the ladies in it, the cookbook...she REALLY impressed me. She never even flinched at a finding a way to help bring in money- right away "we'll do a cookbook". I admire people who look for answers instead of problems, who take responsibility with their celebrity in the world to do something better for others and who see outside themselves. I felt she really showed that. Even better, it was all behind the scenes without cameras watching, without people knowing, which made me feel that she truly made it about the women and not herself (only using her status to truly help them). I really admire what she did and I, like you, feel she really just may be the real deal.

  10. Interesting that Harry seems to have changed shoes at some point, and MM's playing shoes were her high heels but it looks like she is wearing flats in the photo of them talking with some apprentices. The blue fits in well with the group photo.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I like this top. It's sleek but the peplum and belt give it a bit of flair. I love her pencil trousers. It appears that she arrived in heels but wore flats for the gym event. ONLY quibble is that I like her hair naturally curly/wavy. The flat-ironed look IMO doesn't frame her face as well. But what a great event, and she certainly works hard. I feel like the number of engagements she's racked up since her wedding has been ... a lot.

    1. Apparently Moxie isn't going to grace us with her presence here because I bet she'd have something to say about the shoes!

    2. Eh. It's an evening award event in a gym setting. They weren't actually there to "play". The loose garment gave her some literal "wiggle" room when being slightly active. She's not running and jumping but just standing there accepting balls for the basket. Makes me think she's not actually an athlete or sporty - and they gave her something easy to do.

This scenario would actually be a good challenge for those who like to style. An evening awards ceremony in a gym is kinda tricky to dress for. I'll let Charlotte organize that one -- cuz really, what would you have her wear here?

It's the folks who can't stand hair touching that might really go nuts... she's in constant violation in that video. It's all she does.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Moxie on the best possible outfit (loved the blue top), at first I thought I made a mistake by expecting them at an award ceremony, and seeing them playing with balls.:)

Obviously, at sport events one would expect flat shoes at least, I am sure she will take this into consideration next time, such as touching her hair. While I love how she changes her hair style all the time, it is clearly in the way many times, I suppose nerves work in the background as well. But honestly, who cares, a year ago, we only saw the couple fro the first time in public, and now they are married and doing amazing work together.

      Delete
    4. They are at an awards ceremony about coaching. If she'd shown up in trainers people would complain she was dressing down too much for an award ceremony. They were there to watch, talk to participants, and give out the awards. The bit of play on the court was extra, so no need to dress for just that unexpected part.

  19. These 2 are magical together!! Love H & M. This outfit is a miss for me. Like ANON 1625 there are better combos than black and blue. LOVE the style of the top but would have preferred it with lighter slacks given the event. Seems too dressy for daytime.

  22. One needs pretty flat abs and tummy to carry off peplum and flounce around the mid-area. It wouldn't be a good style to hide anything. I think Meghan's choice of top and pants is excellent. She was attending an awards program, an occasion to mark milestones, so I think her attire was dressy enough and businesslike to acknowledge the occasion. Pants were a good idea for the activity part of the occasion. I don't think she needs to appear in gym clothes and I don't think that would be appropriate anyway.

  24. She looks really pretty (as usual), but I’m getting a little bit tired of her being overdressed for more casual events. She could’ve worn something more casual while also looking elegant. Even different pants (a cropped skinny?) with a flat would’ve looked more appropriate and then she could’ve easily changed into heels for the awards (where nobody was particularly dressed up anyways). Not a huge fan of her hair like this, but I think that’s only because the part looks weird. She didn’t really commit to the middle part. It probably would’ve looked better on the side, but truthfully, she’s beautiful so *shrug*.

i see her as much more than "a vessel simply waiting to be impregnated" especially as they have both said they want children and they cant really wait to much longer depending on how many children they want etc. I can think of more invasive and inappropriate things than wondering if she is prego.

      Delete
    5. Yes, the constant pregnancy speculation is getting old already. It rears it’s head any time she wears anything that isn’t skin tight. I know every woman is different, but from my experience, one might make the announcement when they about 12 weeks along. Again, from my experience, you don’t start to show til around the 4 month mark, unless it’s twins. So that gives youapproximately one month between the announcement, and when you start to show. So we would expect the announcement well prior to a “bump” appearing.

      Delete
    6. "A vessel simply waiting to be impregnated" - OY!
It's normal human behavior to wonder after a couple gets married when the first happy pregnancy will occur. Please note - of course, KNOWING that said couple is looking forward to having children!
Plus, for practical reasons, age matters - her clock is definitely ticking.

Once you are over thirty it usually takes longer to get pregnant and it is quite stressful as people tend to keep telling you that. ( I speak from experience!) So we should just try to restrain our comments and hopefully things will happen in due course.

  26. I like the top. She seems to like that type of style, she has worn several styles that have asymmetrical lines with fabric that hung in different lengths. Pretty. Not pregnant yet. I predict they will start 6 months after they return from the tour, this is suggestion of the agency that oversees international diseases. Love these guys. Love this site.

  27. Do you think Harry gave her the necklace for her birthday?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love the necklace, but the outfit is a bit of a head scratcher for me. I don’t feel like the pieces go together well, but maybe it’s because I find the color combo a little jarring. That and stiletto heels on a wooden gym floor to me. Mostly though, it’s great to see the Sussexes supporting a great cause. I’m sure everyone there was thrilled.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I left out some words. It should say “stiletto heels on a wooden gym floor don’t make sense to me.”

      Delete
    2. I wonder why H&M's staff didn't alert them to the wooden floor issue? Aren't all royal visits kind of choreographed? If I'd been associated with the gym I'd have been cringing over seeing stiletto heels on the wooden floor. They really can do damage. Meghan looks nice but peblums aren't my favorite look on anyone.

And I think her hair in a pretty low pony (similar to the style on the cover of the cook book) would have set this style on fire. The blue peplum and black is fantastic.

  30. Absolutely fantastic look! I am often in the minority when I insist navy and black go together. She proved they do today, the look was a good compromise between dressing like a member of the royal family and attending a sporty, casual event. The shoes were perfect for the overall look, I don’t think we will ever see her in wedges (IMO completely lacking in style) and if she wanted to wear trainers, she would have to have worn a more casual outfit. Loved this and loved seeing he and Harry so happy.

Women wear high heels on courts all the time. During games female coaches are usually all wearing heels, while walking on the court. I was surprised to see David Robinson in attendance. Neat for Meghan to meet an American basketball player that they should would have grown up watching play.

    1. Brings back to memory Kate doing the exact same thing early on when hair was especially long. I don't think it a nervous habit as was often said of Kate. I think in wearing hair not tucked behind the ear having layers frame the face causes hair to fall into eyes. Meghan is very animated and most likely this adds to hair movement. Her hair was beautiful. I think it may have been a professional blow out.

I am a fan of black and navy together, so I really like this outfit. I also love that Meghan acknowledged the work of her husband in the speech, it just shows togetherness I think. However I do assume her style will begin to polish up over time with professional help. Yet love both pieces just not together!

Small hope for more jewelry here.

  46. Loving the Duchess - she really has grown into her new role very well. But not a fan of navy blue/black combo - heels on hardwood floor can do damage, flats would have been a better choice.
