"A Labour of Love": It's a Family Affair as Duchess Meghan Launches Together!

The Duchess of Sussex hosted a celebratory event at Kensington Palace to mark the launch of Together, a cookbook celebrating the power of cooking to strengthen communities and bring people together.

It was very much a family affair as Meghan arrived with her mother Doria Ragland and her Prince. Doria was spotted arriving in London earlier this week. She instilled the importance of giving back in her daughter from a very young age, encouraging her to volunteer in a soup kitchen as a teenager. Doria would buy extra turkeys for homeless shelters at Thanksgiving. It seemed very fitting for her to be there. How proud is Doria feeling today? When asked, she smiled and replied, "head over heels".

Meghan was warmly greeted by the women from the Hubb and their families.

Doria met the women and said "Hi, I'm Meg's mother". Speaking about the project, she added: "It's amazing. I'm just as excited as you are. I'm so glad I can put the face with the recipes. I'm going to tell everyone, I met each of the cooks! I'm going to make everything, I'm serious.” Harry told the group Meghan would always come home with a "huge smile" on her face after cooking with them.

A marquee was erected in the grounds of Kensington Palace for the event.

Harry was on hand to offer assistance.

On Monday morning, Kensington Palace released details of Meghan's highly anticipated first solo project. We discovered Meghan had been making regular trips to Grenfell, focusing on the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen - hubb means love in Arabic. In summer 2017, a group of women gathered in a communal kitchen at the Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre in West London, where they could prepare fresh food for their families, friends and neighbours. As they cooked together and shared recipes, as a community they began to connect, heal and look forward. Meghan first visited the kitchen in January. United by their passion for cooking as a way of strengthening communities, The Duchess was inspired by how the project empowers women at a grassroots level, and championed the cookbook project as a way of ensuring the kitchen can continue transforming lives and communities through cooking.

The Duchess suggested creating a cookbook to ensure the Hubb would have sufficient funding to open seven days per week. She was there every step of the way; from securing a publisher, to getting photographer Jenny Zarins on board. In a beautifully written foreword, Meghan looked back on her time with the Hubb: "The kitchen was opened after the Grenfell tragedy, offering women who had been displaced and the community around them a space to cook food for their families. Their roles as matriarchs united them across their cultures; the kitchen provided an opportunity to cook what they knew and to taste the memory of home, albeit homes some had recently lost. I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen; it is a place for women to laugh, grieve, cry and cook together. Melding cultural identities under a shared roof, it creates a space to feel a sense of normalcy - in its simplest form, the universal need to connect, nurture and commune through food, through crisis or joy - something we can all relate to. During my visit I met Zahira, a working mum who oversees much of the coordination at Al-Manaar and whose infectious smile is enough to make you forget any troubles. Upon learning the kitchen was only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays I asked, “Why isn’t this open seven days a week?” Her response: “Funding.” And now just a few months later, here we are...Together."

Harry and Doria with Zahira.

Meghan has been passionate about food all her life. "I have a lifelong interest in the story of food - where it comes from, why we embrace it and how it brings us together: the universal connection to community through the breaking of bread." Her love of cooking and belief in the power of food to bring people together married with her desire to do something tangible to help Grenfell served as the passions behind this project. And this project is certainly a tangible one. By Tuesday morning, the book had topped the Amazon UK bestseller list. In a testament to its global reach, it was in the top 5 on Amazon US, Australia and Canada to name just a few. The target is to sell 50,000 copies to support the Hubb and projects in the community. I suspect that number will easily be surpassed. The Royal Foundation is administering the transfer of funds to the Hubb Community Kitchen.

Today was very much about celebrating the completion of the book and the delicious recipes that brought the women of the Hubb together during one of the darkest periods imaginable. Meghan joined them in the Kensington Palace kitchens to prepare and cook the meal.

Recipes from the book prepared included coconut chicken curry, aubergine masala and a range of chapatis and sharing dips, as well as caramelised plum upside-down cake, and spiced mint tea. Below, the sharing menu.

Robert Hardman writes:

'Few can recall the last time a prince or princess was down in a palace kitchen, sleeves rolled up. In due course, many more traditional patronages will follow. But many years hence, historians will record that the first cause espoused by the House of Windsor's first American princess was a community kitchen underneath the A40.'

Meghan and Doria chatted about the recipes with the women from the Hubb.

The Telegraph reports:

'The trio, who at one point stood with their arms around one another in a line, made their way around four food stations, with the Duchess getting stuck in to help cook while her mother and husband watched on proudly.
At the first stop, Ahlam Saeid showed off an enormous bowl of green rice. “Oh I love that,” said Doria. “That was the first thing I asked about” [after learning of the cook book]. “Everyone’s just hungry”, said the Duchess, laughing, as she added fresh mint and olive oil to the dish.
As they made their way through tables of salad, chapatis and kofta kebabs, Doria quizzed the cooks about the ingredients, listening carefully to the herbs and spices they described. One of the cooks promised to set food aside for the Royal couple, with the Duchess telling her: “Oh thank you, I’ll take that home and have it for dinner.”

Doria told the group "The power of women, We make things happen. We're curious, we say yes, we show up. I'm inspired." We certainly know where Meghan's beliefs stem from.

Today marked another milestone for the Duchess - her first speech. Meghan spoke for over three minutes without notes about the project that became "a labour of love" for her. “On a personal level, I feel so proud to live in this city that can have so much diversity. There’s 12 countries represented in this one group of women. It’s pretty outstanding.”

The flawless speech was effortlessly delivered. It's very clear how much this project means to her personally.

Meghan's speech from the Mail Online:

'I'm so privileged to know you. Working on this project for the past nine months has been a tremendous labour of love. I have just recently moved to London and I felt so immediately embraced by the women in the kitchen, by your kindness and to be in this city and be in this room and see how multi-cultural it was.
'On a personal level I feel so proud to live in a city with so much diversity. This whole country is represented by the people in the kitchen. It's pretty outstanding.
'There's so many people to thank - I'm extremely grateful because this is my first project and I appreciate your support. It truly took a village to see this through. Everyone has embraced this so fully because it has been a passion project for us all.
'As I said this is more than a cook book and what I mean by that is the power of food is more than just the meal itself it is the story behind it. And when you get to know the story behind the recipe, you get to know the person behind it and help us celebrate what connects us rather than divides us. That is the ethos of Together.
'Thank you so much for letting me be part of this and letting me be on this adventure with you and I'm so excited to see the projects we will continue to do in your community and also how you will inspire people globally by sharing your stories and your recipes. It's so impactful. You can see that in just a few days alone what's happened and the book's not out yet.
'What you have been able to do is a testament to what that means to people. I'm so proud of you.
'So on that note I know that some of you have started eating, as you should. I'd be the last one to want to let the food get cold so please enjoy your beautiful lunch and give another round of applause for the Hubb Community Kitchen. Thank you.'

One could say Prince Harry was bursting with pride. His expressions says it all :)

Afterwards, it was time to enjoy the freshly made food with their guests. Guests included members of the local community, representatives from Ebury Press, Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre and The Royal Foundation.

Meghan, Doria and Harry posed for a group photo.

Cheeky Harry left with snacks :)

The video below offers a very nice round up of the day.

From Hannah Furness:

'Zahira Ghaswala, Hubb coordinator, said afterwards that she was feeling "very emotional" at the success of the day, saying the refurbished kitchen will open for seven days as of next week, with future plans to bring in sessions for fathers and children, and cookery courses.
One woman at the launch said she was now finding help through counselling after the Duke of Sussex encouraged her to talk about what had happened and rid herself of her misplaced feeling of guilt for surviving.'

It was wonderful to hear so many of you ordered Together and supported Grenfell (Indeed, I hope to improve my own culinary skills by trying a few recipes). It has solidified my belief in the power of a good cause to bring the royal community together and the endless potential for charitable efforts spearheaded by the royals. Meghan should be incredibly proud of the success Together is already enjoying. I was chatting with friends about it and we said "If she can achieve this in four months as a Duchess, what will she achieve in four years?".  Royal reporter Chris Ship said today demonstrated how Meghan is changing the face of the British Royal Family.

The courage and determination to heal and rebuild a broken community demonstrated by the women of the Hubb has touched people all over the world. This is just the beginning for the community kitchen...Together.

If you would like to purchase the book, or perhaps gift it, it's available at Amazon UKAmazon USWaterstonesBarnes and Noble and The Book Depository (Free Delivery Worldwide).

The Duchess looked professional and stylish in a mix of Canadian and US brands for the event.

Meghan's sleek zephyr blue Smythe Peaked Lapel Wool Blend Coat is a longline piece with a sophisticated tailored silhouette. It's available at Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. With thanks to Japanese Ginger for the ID!

Meghan teamed the coat with the Tuxe Bodywear Renegade Bodysuit.

Meghan's pretty skirt is the Saturday style by her close friend Misha Nonoo. It retails for $250 at Orchard Mile.

The piece is described as:

'Great for any day of the week, the ladylike length and pleats keep your look demure and professional when paired with a crisp white shirt or black turtleneck. Style it with a t-shirt and trainers, for Saturday (or Sunday) brunch. The Saturday skirt features a grosgrain waistband with side zipper and clasp closure.'

Meghan's Fashion notes the Duchess accessorised with her Catbird stackable rings.

And Meghan wore her Sarah Flint Jay 100 pumps.

A fantastic and memorable launch!

  2. Haha, sometimes I feel Meghan is wasted on the likes of me...just realised my two very mundane thoughts on seeing all of this were: 1. Aw, her mother is so pretty. 2. Wonder what green rice is.

    1. It's rice cooked with chopped green herbs or green veggies, like spinach, or both.

  5. Oh I had a coat, that cut, that color, for years. I loved it, always felt so elegant no matter what I had on under it.

The menu sounds so delicious. I adore curries, naan, chapatis, Middle Eastern food and food from India, Pakistan.... Dolmas, aubergines in anything.... Sigh, reminds me of my time living in digs in England in the 1970s when I ate take-away and, when I could afford it, actual "sit down" Indian restaurants at least once/twice a week. My daughter always claims that I ate too much while I was pregnant and that's why she can't stand it. Sadly, none of my American family likes it so I won't be buying the cookbook. Maybe they could put out a second release called "how to cook Middle Eastern food for one...." The caramelized plum cake though I MIGHT be able to sneak in.

Doria looks thrilled to be with her daughter at such a special event. You raised her well, Doria.

  7. She speaks so well and so eluquently. She’s a natural at this and I really feel she’s genuine in her beliefs and her need to help people. Look at how Harry looks at her!!! :-) so very happy for this beautiful couple. Both Meghan and Doria look wonderful. I love Meghan’s outfit even if it is her usual blue and black, I feel the coordination this time and the fit is spot on. Doria looks proud and elegant. It’s a win all around for me. Can’t wait to order the book!!!

    1. LizaG and Martha used the words I was thinking when I saw the video of Meghan speaking. "Natural" and "American" came to my mind. She is so comfortable with public speaking, and she seems relaxed and natural, like she's among friends. She's not stiff and formal like so many of the royals. That's the American in her. I also loved seeing Harry and Doria together, looking on proudly.

      Delete
    2. I agree. Although I love the traditions of the British royal family, I think the stiffness and the formality needs to go. I think being less stiff and formal will help them better relate to the public.

  13. What an amazing start to her royal career. Meghan has surprised us all I think!

I like the informal setting, seasonal flowers, and that menu looks delicious. I would so eat all of that (except for the meat part; don't eat meat!). But most of all, it is true to the title of the book. Bringing people together to enjoy delicious food.

And I hope they had EMT's on stand by in case Doria re-burst with pride!

    1. Lol Bluhare!! I imagine that Doria and Harry are just over the moon but not at all surprised by this wonderful project of Meghan's. As the two people that probably know her best, they must be well aware of her compassion, kindness and true willingness to do what's necessary to help others.

On a rather shallow note, while I love Meghan's style and sense of fashion, I have to say that Doria out did her daughter today! I'm loving this monochromatic camel color on Doria, the shoes and shawl work so well together and her necklace is stunning!!

      Delete
    2. It is absolutely brilliant. I love everything about it, including her clothes. Doria is beautiful. If I have a figure like hers at 60 I will be over the moon. She is so elegant, understated and unpretentious.
I will only add that Meghan spoke well, from her heart, with no paper or nervousness. I am not surprised because she speaks the way you expect a 36 year old educated woman of the world to speak. Clearly, with poise, enunciation, starting with a theme and continuing it to the end.
This engagement is not about ticking boxes. It is not about going somewhere, being curtsied to, saying a few fumbling words, and handed presents and coming back home after an hour after shaking a few hands. There is just more meat to the whole endeavor. Obviously not all of her royal work will be like this.. she will have her fair share of handshaking and taking flowers.. but I feel that this showed a work ethic, and a standard that I personally have not seen from other royal activities of other members.

      Delete
    3. Nicely put all of you!:))

    4. I completely agree with all of this Rosman. This was a royal event on another level that I have not seen from other members in years.

    5. Well said Rosman. You have hit the nail on the head. Hope there will be less flowers and more rolling up of the sleeves in the future.

    6. Meghan brings Harry to his knees in the best possible way, Lauri. It is beautiful the way he is so proud of her!

Rosman, I hope she does quite a bit of hand shaking and accepting flowers. It's important to connect with everyone in an every day setting too.

      Delete
    7. I agree Rosman, every time I see Meghan at a new engagement my respect for her grows. Her work ethic and ability to relate to people is very inspiring.

      Delete
    8. I think it’s important to have a mixture. It’s great to have more informal, work-heavy engagements where it’s good to see royals not afraid to “get their hands dirty” or just mixing with the regular folk. But I think the boring hand shaking, accepting flowers, etc. and even the very formal stuff where they break out the gowns and tiaras are also important, because after all they’re supposed to be royalty. If they were exactly like the rest of us, then what is the point of them? (And I know this is something that is very serious with the anti-royalists) I feel weird writing that because I’m American and we don’t have royals, but I’ve always enjoyed following royalty!

It is the best start for Meghan's royal life and I feel like this is so representative of who she is as a person...just awesome! I feel so proud of the DoS (and her cute and supportive husband) :)

  16. I like almost all of Meghan's outfits but I'll take a pass on the coat. It's just too big and baggy and overwhelms her tiny frame. I like the skirt and shoes, and of course this whole event is wonderful. And the cookbook is just a great project that really connects the Royals to everyday folk. Doria is of course lovely and it's great she was there as well for the dinner.

  18. This is so special! We can know see the full extent of how Meghan works and it is lovely. She is such a sweet, sincere, and smart person. Doria being there is almost too much to bear! :) And Doria has some beautiful shoes, too---look inspired by Meghan's choices. Harry has his fingers on his ring again---the Internet "fidget experts" say that repeatedly touching his ring (as opposed to moving it up and down the finger or off) means he wants to be closer to his wife. Wow. I hope the book sells millions of copies!

  19. This is TREMENDOUS! Everything about this seems just wonderful and I'm so thrilled to see it!

The community cookbook is such a fun, creative project that is a good cause, a great way to foster connection, and is linked to Meghan's personal interests. She is truly a natural speaker and advocate and to see her speak so brilliantly is fantastic. I'm so excited to see her continue all this work. She's gonna be a force! And to have Harry AND her mom beside her? Just tremendous.

Also think Meghan looked beautiful - love the full skirt - and the tent is adorable! I want to be at that party!

  20. She looks great! The skirt is a bit risky for a windy day- as you could see when she got out of the car- but she looks fantastic! As does her mother. It must be so special for her to have her mom there!

  23. Her speaking skills are so impressive. I know she's an actress and that it likely comes more easily to her, but speaking and conveying sincerity in that way can't be taught. I also think that having her mother come out to support her shows that this is more than just "work" to her.

Ok, so apparently I'm going to be the only killjoy here but I must say that I'm not quite sure why Doria is there. (She looks fabulous btw.) I think it is odd for her to accompany Meghan and Harry to an official engagement. I'm fairly sure that if Carole accompanied Kate to a charity launch we would be hearing all sorts of things like she is overstepping her position, social climbing etc. This has thrown a slight puzzlement over the event for me today. Otherwise, this is a lovely introduction for this collaboration. The menu looks wonderful and the food must smell divine.

    2. The project is about togetherness and inclusiveness, erika, so I 5hink its nice doria is there to support her and the women. If kate did something like this I think it would be nice for her family to be there too. This is a bit more than a regular 4oyal engagement, dont you think? And it's also her first and is very successful. Now if doria starts going everywhere and asks rpos yo park her car I will start complaining!

    3. I think it's lovely. Why the silly rule or tradition that outside family can't be involved in engagements? I think Harry and Meghan are going to be doing a lot of things their own way, for the better. And I think as Doria gets older and becomes elderly and needs more care down the line, we will be seeing her a lot more often.

They were on the boat with kate in 2012 for Queens flotilla, they were at charity event Royal variety show , they are at Christmas every other year, I could go on and on, but you get the gist. Kate has her entire family showing up at Williams invite.

    6. I fully agree bluhare. I think there is so much behind why Doria was there. Basically, she is Meghan's only family and how nice to support her at her first project.

What an asset or gain she is, as Camilly put it! And after 4 month, we are on a very exciting ride for sure!

      Delete
    7. Hi Erika, I think that maybe Doria went as a personal supporter the way Harry did. I would be alarmed if she started showing up at other events, but this one strikes me as something personal to Meghan and that's why she felt comfortable having Doria along.

      Delete
    8. yes, you are the killjoy:). If my mother lived far from me, I would relish in having her join me and my husband for lunch

    9. I thought it was a no brainer that Doria be included. This passion project for Meghan is around food. What Meghan said:

'As I said this is more than a cook book and what I mean by that is the power of food is more than just the meal itself it is the story behind it. And when you get to know the story behind the recipe, you get to know the person behind it and help us celebrate what connects us rather than divides us. That is the ethos of Together.'

That's all about family. These women at the Hubb are the matriarchs of their families. Doria is her mother - the women that taught Meghan to cook. Meghan shared the collard greens and black eye peas story - her go to dish for New Years - that's family.

I loved the fact that she showed this level of inclusion.

    10. Yes, the Middleton's have been to royal events as well as Sophie Wessex's father but they were conducted differently. They did not arrive with Kate. They were not photographed with Kate and they were not quoted by the press at the event. There is a very fine line that needs to be followed here or things could be perceived negatively. Again, I'm not sure it is advantageous for the new comer to come in and do things in a drastically different way. I'm sure Doria wanted to meet the women her daughter has been working with and vice versa. Certainly, that could have been accomplished by a private visit. Some rules and protocol are old fashioned and need to be bent but some make the monarchy what it is and help it thrive. I'm not sure that a new royal bringing her mom with her on an official engagement is beneficial in an optics kind of way.

Bluhare, you make a good arguement. If this is a one time thing- ok. If we see this again, not so sure it will be ok. Many royal engagements are about togetherness, inclusivness and supporting women. Where does the line get drawn? Rosman, makes a great point below about the need for the foundation to be separate from family and she's right.

    11. I agree that the Middletons have had a presence at many events. However Kate has never taken on a solo project of this scope. Meghan appears to have been very busy "working" these past nine months. They are both wonderful representatives of the RF. But, they are also very different personalities. I have always been an admirer of Kate but always came away wanting more from her then showing up for a meet and greet. I am positive that a great percentage of people who read this blog volunteer and lend their names in support of charity work, school functions etc. Each and everyone knows you bring more then a smile when you walk through the door. It begins with taking your coat off and saying, I'm here. Meghan has exhibited the work ethic and commitment we are most familiar with and hope for in someone who can make a difference through their connections. I believe that it is no coincidence that Kate is now having her first solo project.

    13. Thank you, Erika. I always like it when you agree with me about something! :)

And I don't think Doria will be the third wheel. I think she was here for her daughter's first project, and she's very rightly proud as can be. It's Harry we need to worry about; the poor man may need some air. :)

    14. 'Some rules and protocol are old fashioned'...it's not just protocol that is old fashioned, but our thinking of what is appropriate. I thought it a wonderful thing having her mother and husband accompany her on her 1st project, but wow, some people will use this to lightly bash instead of celebrate. Look at me getting caught up in this, when all I really want to say about today's lunch is, I'm thrilled! Glad to hear Kate will now be doing her own solo project.....

      Have a great day folks!

    15. Lol bluhare right on about Harry. I think that every time he looks at Meghan. It’s adoration and love to the point of almost visibly losing his senses. It always strikes me that he views her as so completely out of his league and he thanks his lucky stars every night that she took up with him lol. Which is funny and unexpected as he’s the prince and the supposed “catch”. I don’t think he views it that way at all. It’s always delightful to see them together.

      Delete
    16. Erika, I think this is a one-off engagement because it seems to have come from a personal place for Meghan. I don't think we will see Doria in other engagements simply for the reasons you state. They do need to maintain separation and I think they will. I think this is a one time thing.

    17. Theresa J - if you follow royal families and procedures you will know that their lives aren't as simple as ours. It's not just about taking your mother to lunch. There are so many complications behind everything. I assume that as a long-time royal follower you know what goes into each event: the scheduling, the planning, the vetting, the security - right? There are tons of taxpayer gbp that they need to think about.. so it's a bit more complicated than taking one's mother out to lunch. Right? Erika is raising valid points. I think that her concerns will be moot because this is a one-time thing, but pointing them out is not really bashing anyone.

      Delete
    18. No kidding about Harry, bluhare. I think anon 20:33, sums it up well.

Theresa J, I really wish people would accept that many different people have different opinions dependent upon many different variables. Nothing is black and white in my experience and, often, there are multiple ways of looking at the same circumstance. I think it is rather simplistic and narrow to call someone's opinion which is different than your own bashing.

I think there is a point to retaining certain traditions. When the royals lose that element of mystic and become "just like us", it will be the beginning of the end for them. Of course, that does not mean they can not be relatable and empathetic. There is a reason why the BRF has lasted this long.

    19. What a wonderful day they had!! And it was lovely seeing Doria supporting her daughter. She looked super classy. However, I think this would be the beginning of seeing Doria from time to time to support her daughter's future projects and I don't see anything wrong with that. As for Harry, it was lovely seeing him beaming with pride over the success of his wife's solo endeavor. Onto the food :) The menu was so yummy!Especially the green rice and the samosas and the chapatis!! Thank You Charlotte for letting us be a part of their wonderful and successful day!! XOXO

    20. I hope you're correct, Rosman, that this was a one off. I can't imagine any other scenario in which this would be ok other than Wimbolden, Christmas or maybe the races.

      Delete
    21. I really don't see what the issue is. Yes, the monarchy needs to retain certain traditions but others have been given up or modernized. So what if the in-laws weren't included decades ago? Back then royals also didn't marry commoners and women with brothers couldn't inherit the throne. All that has changed and other things will too.
What's important is that Kate as future Queen and Meghan as a senior royal remain personally happy so that they can do a good job and be self-confident, strong women that everyone can look up to. Nobody wants another unhappy princess like Diana and a big divorce scandal but part of ensuring that that doesn't happen means letting these women have their own families around. They may have married into the royal family but these women still have a place that they come from and luckily family that supports them, so let them have those people around, there's no need to hide them away.
Everybody knows that Doria won't be tagging along to every single engagement but if she appears at a couple of important events, no harm will be done.
By the way, Camilla's sister has attended engagements too, is that alright with Doria's critics?

      Delete
    22. Erika, for what it's worth I understand exactly where you're coming from. When I saw the photos and saw Doria stepping out of the car with H&M it felt off to me. I understand the mother and daughter connection, and Doria's place in this particular equation, but I don't think her support needed to be as "center stage" as it was here today.

And I, too, am aware of the presence of the Middleton's at certain events, but as you said, it was "conducted differently". Very differently. And before anyone dismisses the fine line here, I am also well aware of the criticism directed at the Middleton's over issues such as how much time W&K spend with her family *in private*, or going to Wimbledon and sitting in the royal box on a *different day* than Kate and William. I could go on, but those who agree understand and those who don't, won't acknowledge it.

    23. Im struggling with this too not just this but the fab 4 sometimes...Part of Royal life is the traditions, amazing long history and royal wounder that goes with it.

Sometimes I find they are try to hard to be "just normal people" yes there humans but they do not have a normal life and if they lose all the traditions then people will question even more do we need royalty, and be sad of losing history but on the other hand they have to modernize to be with times. I know im often quick to judge when they are more laid back because Personally My favorite events are the traditional ones and I love history. I feel bad they have a very hard line of keeping a traditional and modernized role- They wont be able to make everyone happy.

That being said if Doria had arrived before them I dont think there would have been the issue it was, as others have pointed out other family members have attend other events but there just there not with them persay.

But for a side note it was nice to see a family member supporting our Duchess instead of the crap she has had to put up with and Doria looked amazing!!!! (ps. sorry for spelling)

    24. It's worth a lot, royalfan. I think many seasoned royal watchers like you and I ( except for you, bluhare 😊) who have been around since Diana, as opposed to those just starting to watch when Meghan came on the scene, are going to view this in a different way. I agree with both you and kc that this would not have seemed off had Doria arrived separately, and not been front and center throughout the engagement. Actually, I think it is fine that she was there. I just found her prominence jarring.

Kc, I really appreciate the pomp and circumstance of the more formal and traditional BRF events too. The BRF has an unenviable and precarious balancing act to uphold the mystic and tradition while evolving to be more modern and relatable.

Wow, I love everything about today. Having Doria and Harry in the background supporting her was a wonderful touch. Doria must be so proud of how her daughter is using her royal status to bring change to this community! Her speech was flawless and truly from the heart. What a wonderful project!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Meghan rocks! This is such an amazing cause and one that is dear to her heart. I absolutely love the inclusion of her Mother! Also, Meghan spoke eloquently and naturally. No need for a speech writer with this one! She is truly an asset to the BRF! I was so enthralled with her speech and the event that I paid very little attention to what she was wearing, but she looking great in back book! Meghan has good energy!

  32. Responding to Doria's presence, I feel Doria had a hand in this event because of her personal interests in helping women in adverse situations and in cooking (and because she raised Meghan to be the way she is). I also think it must feel great for some of the women to look at the Duchess' mother and see a beautiful woman of color. If Kate's mom had a personal interest in something other than her family (and I don't mean that to be negative), I would very much welcome her at an event.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think Doria had any hand. We would have known otherwise. Doria has obviously raised Meghan in her mold and so they share similar interests but if she had any direct involvement it would have been disclosed. And why should she? They need to be careful of separation of the Royal Foundation from family.

      Delete
    2. I don't have a problem with Doria at the event (and I wouldn't if Carole showed up at a Kate event). I doubt she will show up at Meghan's events going forward. This was obviously a special and meaningful event for Meghan, hence her mother's presence. Also, I recall Pippa attending Wimbledon with Kate back in 2012. Kate attended in her official royal capacity and Pippa walked in with and sat with Kate. For the record, I didn't have an issue with Pippa attending with Kate (she obviously shares the same tennis passion as Kate). I think it's wonderful that both Kate and Meghan can bring their close family support with them to these special events. Why should their birth family be left out just because they are royal now?

      Delete
    3. Attending Wimbolden is a completely different animal. The royals have traditionally invited guests to sit with them in the royal box for eons.

      Delete
    4. I think it's great they support each other. Anyone remember Diana speaking of not having family around her when she was a royal?

      Delete
    5. Doria is there because she's Meghan's mother and Meghan as Duchess of Sussex has the right to invite her family to special events. The only person who can object is HM Queen Elizabeth. Since Doria;s there the Queen must not object. It's not that complicated folks.

      Delete
    6. Allison, we don't know what Carole does or does not support. She's a private person. As it should be.

      Delete
    7. Yes, it is complicated. This is not your average family. If it was, there wouldn't be comments about Meghan's "job " as a member of the RF. She would be Harry's wife, that's all. For a lot of complicated reasons, people feel the RF owns them certain things, and that they are accountable to the people. They have huge privileges and it is not farfetched to think in-laws shouldn't profit of them.

  33. What a wonderful engagement. Maybe it’s because I’m American, but I loved the informal vibe of this event. It’s for a community kitchen, one where women get together to cook and provide for families, so I’m glad they didn’t go the formal route. People seemed comfortable and happy. I think Meghan did a great job, and I loved seeing Harry and especially Doria there supporting her. They looked so proud of her.
    On to clothes...
I loved Doria’s outfit. She’s one classy lady.
I liked Meghan’s outfit, but the one thing that kept it from being a total “love” was that I was nervous about her skirt and the wind. When she got out of the car and the wind took her skirt I was cringing and hoping that no photographer was going to get a picture and publish it. I was thinking back to Kate’s infamous yellow dress incident in Canada.
But that’s just a tiny quibble and overall everything was lovely. I think the Duchess of Sussex did a fabulous job.

  35. Lovely event. I have to say Doria looked fabulous. Love her outfit. I like that the cookbook is reasonably priced. It can be quite hard to make much money from a book. However there is no doubt that the cookbook has generated interest in the center which may be the most important part of the book in the long run.

  37. It was so moving to have Doria attend to support her daughter and the whole idea of family, community, and the power of food to bring people together. I wouldn't think that now Doria will be a regular at royal events. It seems to me that this was a very special event, not because it was Meghan's first solo, but because the event is about love and support and the care and feeding of one's fellow human beings. How completely appropriate and compelling to underscore this point by having Meghan surroundeded by her own family at an event that celebrates how a group of women care for and feed families. It seems to me that she was so proud to introduce her mother and husband. Probably Doria appearing at an event to support her daughter is something that is going to be debated in the press and on blogs for a while now by people concerned with protocol and what's "appropriate" but to say that Doria shouldn't be there because it's just never been done before (although I'm not sure about that) strikes me as a bit Churlish towards such a happy event.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree...any quibbling is churlish and picayune..It was BUFFET lunch on the GROUNDS of KP where H&M LIVE for the people INVOLVED in the project. Ms Doria rode in the SAME car. Where's the extra cost..where's the break in protocol? It was for a GOOD CAUSE... "Marvelous Job; beautifully executed; congratulations all"

      Delete
    2. I wouldn't say that it has never been done before. It's true that the British royal family didn't use to be big on including the in-laws but that has been changing and the change actually started before the Middleton's with Sophie's father, who moved in with the Wessexes after his wife's death, attends Christmas at Sandringham and for instance was also there when Sophie participated in a sports challenge connected to the Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme, which I believe is somewhat comparable (it wasn't just a private sports thing that she did). The Middletons were invited to participate in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee River Pageant, very much an official royal event.
Within other royal families even more examples can be found. Crjown Princess Mette-Marit does a literary train tour across the country each year to promote literature and took her mother along one year. I think this is very much comparable because it's also a project that Mette-Marit devised herself, in line with her personal interests. Her mother is also regularly invited by the King and Queen of Norway to attend all sorts of events.
Queen Maxima's mother was at Prinsjesdag celebrations only a couple of days ago. When Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel attend events in the region where his parents live, they always invite them along. When Princess Leonor had her first official engagements in Asturias earlier this month, Queen Letizia's family was invited too. Queen Sofia's sister moved into the palace in 1981 and has attended numerous engagements with her sister ever since.

    4. Erika you need to allow others to voice their opinions in the same way you expect to voice yours. A number of readers may well see some of your comments as churlish and that is their opinion.

      Delete
    5. I've always been a strong advocate of allowing others to voice their opinions. However, churlish is a fairly derogatory word as it denotes a sense of rudeness, incivility and meaness. So while I don't have any problem with people disagreeing with my point of view, I do have a problem with people choosing one of the most insulting words they can come up with to condemn what I say. I always state why I think something. I never state anything just to be mean spirited.

      Delete
    6. Erika and I disagree on a lot of things. One thing I'll say about her is she's never been churlish or mean spirited. Totally wrong, definitely. (Ha, Erika!) But not mean spirited.

And let's face it. I think some of the comments are because Kate has been roundly criticised about her family being too involved. So I see where they come from, even if I don't agree with it today.

      Delete
    7. Erika expressed her opinion and back it up without attacking another poster. THAT is not churlish.

      Delete
    8. I agree with Erika. All arguments in favour of Doria's being there are based on the fact this was an out of the ordinary royal event, about inclusiveness, an exception. And comments believe it will remain exceptional. I think everyone understands why it would be shocking for Doria to be often at her daughter's official engagements. I do not think exceptions should be made so early, when there is no guarantee the rule has been understood. People can believe it is an exception or believe that Doria's will be constantly involved in the future.
As for the comparison with Kate, I believe Doria is better accepted, because she is not considered a social climber, like Carole was.

    11. Anon 13:05, I acknowledged some royal counters in another spot in this post. Basically, I pointed out that at the engagements where commoner in laws were present, they did not arrive with the royals, were not photographed with the royals, although they were photographed, and did not take part in the engagement with the royals. Imo this is the difference. The Scandinavian monarchies are much more relaxed than the BRF although the BRF would benefit from adopting some of their practices. As for Princess Irene, she is Queen Sofia's sister but she is a royal in her own right.

Anon, I just read thru your examples, I must say it was quite an education! I had no idea that sophies father lives with them! its funny about the things you Don't hear about:) but how nice for the kids and for sophie herself. and the rest were great examples as well. I believe that some of it stems from kates mother/family be criticized and hopefully that will continue to abate as time goes on. I think its great that both the duchess's have such wonderful mothers and have great relationships with them, not sure how having your mother around makes her a social climber? I think the inclusion makes their marriages stronger and the BRF better. why not support each other to succeed!!

I think this is the moment I've been waiting for most since the wedding. It is so lovely to see Meghan step out at an event and shine. Her connection to the women at the Hubb is so authentic and moving. I'm glad this initiative helped her feel at home in a new city and forge her own path in the royal family. I can't wait to receive my copy of Together.

  39. What a lovely event, I thought it was lovely for Meghan to bring her mum. It was not a stuffy formal royal event. Meghan has had so much stress over other family members and her Dad, that it’s very understandable that she would like her mum to support her today. I live 2 hours away from my own family , ( live near my in laws)and some times I just want to go home and be with my own family. Harry has all that support at his door step so he must be delighted to have Doria there for Meghan. I loved both ladies outfits today, both smart but not too formal. Sinead

Both Meghan and her mother looked chic and classic. Everything about Doria's style was so classic, the color, the fabric, the lovely shawl and love the ankle slacks with the block heel shoes. Also thought that Meghan chose well. Lovely skirt and bodysuit. Loving her separates. And the coat is something that I would love to have in my closet. That color is lovely and it'll be great staple for her over the years. Some don't like the "box" shape but I believe this is a style choice Meghan likes (aka the black watch coat had a similar shape).

No words to say how emotional all this is , from Doria beeing there to the happiness they all’ glow with ! This is’ indeed something unusual for’the BRF , from the very quick action , most of it under the radar , to the real empathy and the easy way Meghan’ and Harry interact with their guests . Harry is absolutely on top of a cloud , how beautifull to see this young man discovering that life IS beautiful !

I am forty this year and the face vs. behind thing has hit me hard. I am thin but so is my face - not a look I like. Ideally I want more fluffy cheeks. It is always more attractive to have a fleshy face as you get older and if you can maintain good muscle tone on your body with that then it is ideal.
Obviously Doria and Meghan have good genes. You can't get this through working out or eating. Either you are born with it or you get some sort of procedure done. And I think we can agree here that this is genes.

So lovely Harry is there supporting her, he let her have her time and didn't hover too much, didn't he look so proud. She is a wonderful public speaker, her speech was really well delivered and she did if off the cuff no prompt cards incredible, so very well done. Doris WOW! she looks amazing. Loved everything about her outfit, the colour, pants to die for!, the shoes I want them! her jewellery subtle but just right. I really loved the added shawl draped over her shoulders. She looked so elegant. She wasn't overbearing she just so refined, there to support her daughter, what a good mother does. After all the terrible publicity, Doris quietly showed that this is how you do it. She is a class act. Harry should be proud of both of his ladies!. I can see her going to many events such as charity polo, openings of civic buildings, garden shows---today's glory was just magnified by her presence. If she moves to the UK, she will probably be busy with her own interests, and she may ask her daughter to appear with her some tie!

It's just so inspiring on so many levels -- seeing how truly Meghan cares and how hard she's worked, how Harry looks at Meghan with such pride and love, how successful this cookbook and kitchen have turned out to be, how so many cultures have been brought together under a truly GOOD cause, how Doria was also there to support.

I'm just so glad that Meghan has been working as hard as she has and been enjoying it all. She's everything I hoped she'd be in this role. And Harry's pride and love is so touching.

I pre-ordered the book last night and can't wait to get my copy. It felt good to support not just one of Meghan's causes, but such a unique and unifying cause...such a beautiful thing has risen from a terrible tragedy.

I agree with bluehare and others who have stated they think Doria's presence was a one-time occurrence. I was glad to see her there, as I really like the bond she and Meghan have, but don't think it would be appropriate for her to be there at lots of official royal engagements. And I don't think we will see her at lots of royal engagements. I think this was a special occasion, as so many have already aptly stated -- one about family and bringing people together, not to mention Meghan's first solo project. I can only imagine how proud Doria must truly feel.

Also, Doria looks AMAZING. I can only hope to look half that classy at 30 as she does at her age LOL

100% well done to Meghan on this project. I think it will be an event to look back on and smile over.

  54. This post just made my day. I love seeing Doria and Meghan together and it is so wonderful to know that they have such a close relationship and that Doria is someone she can count on to support her (especially considering all of the nasty behavior her other family members have exhibited lately). This looked like a great event and Meghan should be very proud of this work. I look forward to more events and moments like this with mother supporting daughter.

  55. I do not know what type newspaper the Daily Mail is but I have just finished reading an article authored by a Richard Kay. I must say a beautiful read of todays events and Meghans relationship with her Mom. The few comments in regard to her father could have been left out but the press is the press. His words were so on target and greatly complimentary and more importantly truthful.

  56. Shame on everyone who has a problem with a daughter spending time with her mother regardless of the event. Family first! Its not about position. How many women would love to have the opportunity to once again invite their Moms to an event. Come to think of it, if your Mom is still with you invite her to something special she will love it. We Americans are like that. We love family.

    1. Respectfully, I disagree with that statement. She’s no longer a private citizen, so she, and any married-in royal spouse, have to behave differently than regular people. I think it’s fitting that Doria was here today, and it was lovely to see her supporting her daughter, but as others have mentioned, it’s not a good idea for Meghan's mom, the Middletons, etc to go to many events on the regular in a sort of official capacity. I’m sure the British taxpayers don’t want to have to pay for security on private family members, at least I wouldn’t want to if I was in their shoes. But again, that’s just my opinion.

      Delete
    2. There are no additional security costs because Doria is there. Security is there for Meghan and Harry, not her (or the Middletons). Now would security step in if Doria were in danger? I suppose so but the same would be true when Doria or Carole are out shopping or at a restaurant with their daughters and their security details.

    3. Who is talking about future events? Why are people getting bent out of shape about something that has NOT happened? Why give energy to this? That's like me getting upset that it's going to rain next week and ruin my shoes....IT HAS NOT HAPPENED!....Let's stop speculating and stick to the event that HAS happened....and it was wonderful

    4. I think a lot of people are conflating a mother supporting her daughter in her first project-- and a large one at that -- with someone wanting a career as a quasi royal. The cart is so far ahead of that horse we cant even see it!

      Delete
    5. The only reason I meantioned it is because other people have mentioned that they hope to see more of Doria in the future at events. I’m not saying she or any of the families are going to start going to everything. And also, I’m not getting bent out of shape. I’m calmly stating my opinion.

    6. It was right that Doria came to support her daughter on her first big project. A project Meghan chose , not picked by KP or already in place as one of her husband’s patronage’s. We all know Doria is her only family. I don’t see where it is a bad idea for family members of the royals to be present at certain events. It helps people relate to the RF as real people.

  57. It was wonderful seeing Harry and Doria supporting Meghan at her very special project! They were all beaming with pride. From the pictures to the video clips you can tell that Meghan has touched the lives of the women & their families. How awesome it must feel to them to have a visitor drop into a community kitchen a few months ago & in the midst of so many things facilitate such an inspirational project. Well done Duchess Meghan and everyone who contributed to making this project a success!

I am patiently waiting for my book to arrive, until then I’ll enjoy reading more about this project & re-watching Meghan’s wonderful speech. Thanks for the lovely blog summary of this special event!

  64. Okay, I just watched some of the videos from today's engagement and I think it would have been a nice touch if Meghan had acknowledged Harry in her speech. After all, he was the reason for her move to London. She's part of a team. "Grateful for my husband's support", for example, would have gone a long way. Even after the speech she almost appeared to walk past him. At times, he almost appeared to be a third wheel.

I was almost too scared to say something about that, royalfan. But I agree. I would have liked to hear Meghan thank her husband also. After all, Harry is pretty amazing.

      Delete
    4. I agree with you royalfan. I expected to hear "husband" in their somewhere and was surprised when it didn't come.

      Delete
    5. Having a look at the videos and the images, Harry did take the third wheel and he was perfectly fine with it. How many times I have seen a young royal lagging behind her husband, way too many.

And how lucky Meghan did not say a word about him (I suppose because she was overwhelmed with the day and everything), at least there is something left to criticize.

      Delete
    6. I was hoping for that too Royalfan.

      Delete
    7. Why? Harry didn't have much to do with it. He married her. She should thank him for that? By the look on his face, he's the one who thinks he should do the thanking!

It bothers me because it implies she wouldn't be able to do it without him. She thanked the people who participated in the project. And especially in this day and age, the idea that a woman cannot stand up on her own and talk about her own work gets me mighty cranky.

      Delete
    8. Should she have thanked the Academy too? Give me a break. Why mention Harry? Because all the other royals mention their spouses in their speeches? Oh, that's right, they don't!

She was talking about these incredible women who have been through hell, and a project they completed that will raise money for a community kitchen so they can do the most basic thing, feed their families.

You're all going to hurt yourselves with that reach.

      Delete
    9. I don't think she should thank Harry because after all the ladies at the kitchen were the ones doing the recipes, so it makes sense to thank them. Harry didn't do anything directly for the book or project. That said, I think that it is just the norm to acknowledge one's family when you give a speech about anything like this. So I would have expected him to be included somewhere - like "Harry and I enjoyed the recipes" or that "Harry and I were touched that they were warm towards me" or something along those lines. It's just soft diplomacy towards your spouse who may not have done anything concrete but was present and supportive.
But I think that she was not viewing this speech in that light. It was more of how the project came together and the people instrumental in making it happen. So it probably skipped her mind to acknowledge him or pull him into the speech. She will be doing more of that as she gets more seasoned - mark my words. She is newly married after all and is not in the habit of including him yet.

  70. Would someone complain Lady Diane accompanying her son? No. What is the critisism all about? First of all, it is Princess Meghans mother, it his HR Harry's mother-in-law, it is family over for a visit which is rare and the whole project is about women of different cultures, about families and communities and it for sure makes the women at ease and proud to meet Meghan's family as well! Why not let Meghan spent time in private AND in public with her family while doing her "job"for the crown. I find it heartwarming to see them togehter and I am sure it helps Meghan as well to settle in her new role, to get comfortable with the new life. Learn from mistakes of the past! And I see that Harry has and will always be open to include Meghan's mother or at some stage after the turmoil and a possible reconnection her father. Great course! Passionately and professionally conducted and I am on the waiting list for the book. Least I can do to support!

  71. The story of The Hubb Kitchen Women is inspiring and exemplary especially in the aftermath of The Grenfell Tower fire tragedy. Meghan did a good job in facilitating to share the story and the recipe with the world. The fund may also take it to the next more inspiring level. I am ordering the book. It is a pleasant surprise to see how DOS used her status and interest in supporting a sad story turn to positive action.

Her mother’s presence is well fitting. This may be a solo official duty, it is also family and community gathering to break bread together, meet and celebrate. It is a diverse community in London and Doria happens to represent an additional diversity of America's community. The more the better interesting.

  72. With all this criticism of Doria's being there, I wonder why no one has considered that perhaps this was a conscious move by the palace to counter negative PR brought on by unsupportive family members. Maybe a little like when there was so much negative press about Carole and the Queen made a point to drive her around Scotland in front of photographers in a show of family unity.

  73. I enjoy a good discussion as much as anyone but on a day like this, when Meghan has launched an impressive first solo project, has helped make a lot of women feel very happy and included, and there are happy family pictures of Meghan with Harry and her mother, I will say that I don't understand the sentiment.

  78. I think Meghan had to avoid spreading credit too far (like thanking Harry) because SHE was welcomed by these women and it is the WOMEN who created their community. We can give Meghan the credit, and we do, for caring and spending her time with them and for thinking of/implementing the idea of a cookbook to raise funds, but the women deserve the lion's share. They had tragedy and hardship and made what they could with no hope of better things to come. They might have thought of a cookbook but realized thy could not make it happen.

And I'm tired of justifying Doria's presence. She's smart, delightful, intelligent, and a humanitarian. She's Harry's mother-in-law and he seems to love her. I hope she goes to many more events, including during Christmas.

    Hello you all,
It is a long time I read this blog and the other one about Duchess Kate. You will excuse me for any unintentional mistakes, I'm from Italy so English is not my native language.
Firstly, I would like to thank Charlotte for her exceptional work. I appreciate it very much.
I have decided to comment because Meghan, since the beginning, has impressed me much. I love her grace and her self confidence. Her speeches are, every time, effortlessly delivered and, what is more, we can truly understand the importance of the project for her. She is really inspiring to me.
I would like you to pose a question: I'm wondering if Meghan has due to change her accent following her marriage into the Royal family. I'm from Italy and I can't recognize it very well. Thank you!!

As someone who is usually more critical of Meghan (her style at times, but also a degree of authenticity), I feel the need to share that I am so deeply impressed with her with this project, and immediately went and pre-ordered this book on Amazon to support this cause. Her ability to be truly immersed in her charitable projects, and so at ease (yes, she's an actress, but still), really wow-ed me today and I commend her. I'm fairly confident she will continue this type of work, and I look forward to seeing more of it. Well done Meghan, and well done to her team.

  83. Hello, I haven't even been able to read any of the comments yet, as I'm so emotional, that I finally had to just make a comment & then I will read & relish what everyone else has shared of their own feelings about a this extraordinary project. I only know, that from the first post Charlotte made of the existence of this whole experience & process... It has struck me at an emotional level I can not explain. I'm not even now prepared to analyze what that's all about. However, the existence of this kitchen (post Fire), this community of women, these woman & these cultures bridging countries & traditions, them welcoming Meghan in, Meghan rolling up her sleeves, the women cooking along side her & developing friendships with her as one of their own, Meghan's immediate sense of what to do to raise money to help the kitchen, Meghan's fast paced "get it done" matter of fact no fuss way that she approached this process of creating, developing, promoting & selling this cookbook takes my breath away. Of course that's how it should be done... but so rarely do we see something happen in such a matter of fact, logical, efficient way. It's moved me to see how moved Meghan was/is by these women themselves as individuals. I imagine the multi-cultural welcome she received, meant more than words can say, considering so much of the nastiness that she was enduring in her own life from those who were rejecting her & trying to hurt her in the press, including her own biological family members. The fact that she included Doria moved me to tears (how exquisitely lovely she looked at this event!). Clearly style, grace & warmth hasn't fallen far from the tree! The amazing pride Harry was exhibiting about his "Meg"! If anyone can actually burst from pride, happiness & pure joy.... it looked like Harry came close to it at this event! Meghan's speech was just Everything! If one was only ever exposed to Meghan through this speech, they would have learned all they need to know about her. She is filled with warmth, compassion, intellect, integrity, a get it done work ethic, eloquence, style, grace & beauty! This is such a ground breaking event for The British Royal Family & to see how they embraced it, & got on board to help Meghan achieve this accomplishment (from The Foundation, all she had at her disposal via being a member of The Royal Family Network, all the way to KP & it's Kitchens.....) has just endeared me to The BRF even more than I could have imagined & I was pretty fond of them already! Knowing of & now seeing another example of their desire to reach out & help those in their Country as well as The Commonwealth! I'm not sure if I expressed myself well, but as I have said, this "Together" Passion Project & the simple facts of it, have moved me so deeply! I will of course be ordering a book & will give them as Christmas Gifts to all the special women in my lives this Christmas! That's shopping done! :) xo

p.s. Could there have been anything more adorable, than seeing a grown up Harry sporting the classic cheeky grin (that we have loved since he was a child) as he left with some goodies tucked away!! lol :) xo

p.p.s. Charlotte, I have always been grateful for you & The DKB & now MAM Communities you have created, but never more than now! Thank you for always being a safe place, a touchstone & the only source I trust for my BRF News! Much love & respect!!

Harry was too funny mugging for the camera as he moved his treat from hand to hand.
