Meghan's Something Blue: The Duchess Reveals Wedding Surprise for Harry in 'Queen of the World'

Good afternoon, are you all having a nice weekend?

I'm popping in today to chat about Meghan's interview for Tuesday's upcoming documentary 'Queen of the World'. Ahead of the broadcast on ITV, videos and quotes from Meghan's segment were released for the Sunday papers. As previously reported, Meghan is reunited with her beautiful Givenchy wedding gown and veil for the first time since the wedding.

The two-part series covers,"The Queen and her role as a figure on the global stage. Queen of the World will also show how Her Majesty aims to pass on the monarchy to younger members of the Royal Family as they continue to build the Commonwealth connection.". Meghan looks back on her "magical" wedding day. The Duchess followed the tradition of having "something blue". "Somewhere in here there’s a piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside - it was my something blue. It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date."

The news has prompted a look back into Meghan's wardrobe for 'the blue dress'.

The Commonwealth and Harry's new role as Youth Ambassador were important factors Meghan considered during her first meetings with Clare Waight Keller. Her decision to incorporate the flora from 53 countries was a special surprise for Harry on the day. "It was important for me, especially now being a part of the Royal Family, to have all 53 of the Commonwealth countries incorporated, and I knew that it would be a fun surprise as well for my now husband, who didn’t know, and he was really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together. And I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction, and just appreciation for the fact that we understand how important this is for us and the role that we play, and the work that we’re going to continue to do within the Commonwealth countries." Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace shared the video below.

Meghan added: "You know, it’s such an exciting time for us, especially with Harry’s role as Youth Ambassador for the Commonwealth and the travel that we intend to do, to do work specifically in all those different territories. Which is why it was so important to have some sort of example of that present with us on the day, 53 countries as well, my goodness, It’ll keep us busy."

Meghan also spoke about the process of collaborating with the hugely talented Clare Waight Keller. "We had two or three meetings talking about sketches and different ideas of how this could really come to life. We knew we wanted it to be very delicate, but then after that point, I just said I trust her implicitly with what she did, and I didn’t see it really until the morning of, so this is my first time seeing the veil like this."

The documentary reveals how the Commonwealth has been a central focus and passion throughout Her Majesty’s life. The Queen has been Head of the Commonwealth since 1952. It seems a very fitting time to air it - looking back over Her Majesty's lifetime of service following the historic Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting earlier this year. The timing perfectly coincides with Harry and Meghan's upcoming Commonwealth tour - marking the beginning of their lifetime of service as a couple.

It airs on ITV on Tuesday at 9.15 pm and on HBO on 1 October at 8 pm.

We'll see Harry and Meghan tomorrow for the Coach Core Awards.

  1. What I think is so lovely, other than the fact that she's obviously very much dedicated to her role, is how much in love she is with Harry. I mean, a piece of fabric from the dress she wore on their first date? How much more sentimental can you get?

  2. What a lovely thing to do on both accounts: Commonwealth and personal. This is also a very nice example of appreciation of her husband without uttering a word of "thank you" because gestures like this go a long way. Well done!

  3. Happy Sunday Charlotte thanks for this. It doesn't seem clear where 'something blue' is hidden - and I see comments for dress and the veil. With the veil so sheer, I would be really impressed how they hid it. Although the flowers have a 3-D effect

  4. Thank you for the beautiful post. I highly doubt "the something blue" is stitched into her veil. One would probably see it. So her saying "somewhere in here..." probably refers to inside here dress. Don't you think?

    1. I read somewhere, maybe the Daily Mail(?) that the bit of blue fabric was sewn inside the lining of the dress.

    2. I assumed it was the dress, but then I saw articles/comments saying it was the veil. Wish they were showing it on HBO the same time as ITV...but I'm sure someone will upload clips/full episode on youtube

  5. It’s nice hearing about how thoughtful Meghan & Harry are about meaningful details. In their engagement interview, Meghan mentioned how thoughtful Harry was in designing her ring. And now, Meghan reveals about the blue fabric from her dress on their 1st date stitched into her wedding dress. So sweet & touching. It was such a great idea to include flowers from Commonwealth countries in her veil, in addition to the California poppy. Happy Sunday!

  6. I love the idea of the blue fabric being incorporated. So sweet. But I’m sure that just after the weddding and interviews were being conducted with Clare Waight Keller the flowers on the veil were her idea which Meghan loved? Maybe I interpreted her wrong but in this video it sounds like it was Meghan choice?

    1. I think Meghan just wanted the commonwealth somehow incorporated into her wedding dress, but the idea of the flowers were Keller's (as she said in her video) and ultimately it was Meghan's decision if she wanted to go forward with that or not and maybe that's why they emphasized "her decision" to incorporate the flowers of the commonwealth? I don't know that's how I am interpreting it, we'll probably have to wait for the doc to come out to get more information

  11. I heard Meghan say that she told Claire that she wanted to incorporate the idea of the Commonwealth, and that Claire suggested the idea of the wild flowers from each country.
She also said that once they had decided on that, she trusted Claire to execute. Speaks to the trust she had in Claire, imo, and why she has returned to her for pieces after the wedding. I look forward to seeing Givenchy on Meghan for many years. I feel Meghan has a very French sensibility in her style in the way that Kate is quintessentially British. A nice dichotomomy, I think. I expect that Meghan will incorporate English designers that speak to her sensibility.

  12. The veil (and gown) was beautiful and Meghan continued a royal bride tradition in her own unique way.

  13. The bateau really IS her favorite neckline for her Royal duty on-the-job clothes, isn't it?
Rather like Kate's preference for V-necks.

And when each of them has to have high necklines, K opts for crew while M opts for turtle/mock turtle.

  14. She made tribute to her mother-in-law the Queen, by symbolising all 53 nations included within the Commonwealth bloc. So,she understands her "role"!!!

  15. What I love about M&H's relationship is how much they care for each other... it seems as if they were constantly thinking about each other and how to make each other happy :) amd that is, I believe, the key to happy life together!
