The Sussexes Touch Down in Sydney!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex touched down in Sydney bright and early this morning at 7am on a commercial Qantas flight. Meghan arrived carrying briefing folders ahead of a preparatory day.

An arrival video.

We saw the couple at Princess Eugenie's Windsor wedding on Friday. It's been reported they skipped the evening bash and rushed back to Kensington Palace to finish packing before their lengthy twenty-two hour flight down under. Media on the ground described the weather as "soggy". Hopefully the weather conditions will pick up in the days ahead. The Today Show also revealed in addition to the plethora of announced engagements, there are embargoed events, which will be revealed in due course.

Scenes at the airport including a strong police presence.

The Duke and Duchess travelled with a staff of ten including private secretary Samantha Cohen; the Queen's former assistant private secretary is Australian and the ideal aide to guide the Sussexes. They will also be joined by deputy private secretary Amy Pickerell, who has been by Meghan's side since the engagement announcement; three communications officers, a programme coordinator, orderly, personal assistant, digital officer and hairdresser. Meghan's close friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney and her family will be in Sydney for the next week to support the Invictus Games. It is understood she and her husband Ben will cover their own costs. I imagine she will be on hand for the first portion of the tour, over the course of the trip we expect to see 30 to 35 outfit changes for the Duchess.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

'It was initially thought the couple had arrived on a British Airways flight about 6am, but they flew in on a Qantas plane about 7am. While Qantas declined to comment, sources said Harry and Meghan were in good spirits during the journey, and were "excited about coming to Australia". It's understood the couple travelled in one of the 14 first-class suites on board the Qantas A383.
After landing at Sydney Airport, a casually dressed Harry and Meghan walked out a back entrance at the airport to their waiting motorcade about 7.40am, holding hands and looking happy and fresh despite their long flight. NSW Police cleared roads during peak hour as the royal couple was whisked to Admiralty House in Kirribilli in a white Holden sedan. Large crowds gathered outside the Governor-General's home in the hopes of glimpsing the young royals. Their motorcade arrived just after 8am.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said it was "so exciting" to welcome Harry and Meghan to Australia. "I have to say it's really, really a full packed visit, they will be doing so much here," Ms Berejiklian told Nine News. "There are also a few surprises which I think everybody will love. But it's really a visit with the people."

Admiralty House will be the couple's base in Sydney. Admiralty House is the official Sydney residence of the Governor-General of Australia. It is located in the suburb of Kirribilli, on the northern foreshore of Sydney Harbour. The large sandstone mansion offers stunning views and will host their first official engagement in the morning.

The arrival coincides with news the Queen has appointed Harry as a Personal-Aide-de-Camp. The symbolic position will be seen a sign of Harry's growing role within the family. More from the Guardian:

"Queen Victoria was the first to institute the appointment of a small group of personal aides-de-camp (ADC) positions, with one of the earliest holders being Prince Louis of Battenberg. William's father the Prince of Wales is also a personal aide-de-camp to the monarch. The Duke of Edinburgh was made personal aide-de-camp by the queen's father, King George VI. Principal ADC is an office held by some high-ranking officers in the armed services and includes carrying duties such as attendance on the Queen at the state opening of Parliament or representing the Queen at memorial services." William was given the role in 2013."

Omid Scobie reports we'll see additional gold aiguillettes to his uniform.

It appears Meghan wore the same black and burgundy coat from the Invictus Sydney photo released earlier this week. At this point, the coat remains something of a mystery. Despite endless searches it's unidentified at this point. Because it features very distinctive colouring and details, it's possibly bespoke or from an upcoming collection.

Meghan teamed the coat with a black turtleneck, quite possibly her Wolford style and black pants/jeans. It appears the Duchess wore her Sarah Flint Jay pumps.

Tomorrow is a packed day, beginning quite early around 9 am. Here's what we can expect for Day 1 of the first leg of the tour:

  • The first day of the tour will begin in Sydney at Admiralty House, the official Sydney residence of the Governor-General of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Cosgrove. Representatives from each of the eighteen countries who are participating in the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 will be present.
  • The Duke and Duchess will then travel to Taronga Zoo to officially open the new Taronga Institute of Science and Learning. The Duke and Duchess will meet two koalas and their joeys that are part of the Zoo’s breeding programme, and visit the laboratory to meet female conservation scientists who are working on efforts to reduce illegal wildlife trafficking.
  • The Duke and Duchess will travel by vessel across Sydney Harbour to the Sydney Opera House. Once inside, Their Royal Highnesses will view a rehearsal of Spirit 2018 by the Bangarra Dance Theatre, an internationally acclaimed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander modern dance company. Upon departure, walking along the Opera House forecourt, the Duke and Duchess will have an opportunity to meet members of the public.
  • The first day of the visit will conclude with a reception hosted by the Governor-General at Admiralty House, to be attended by Australians from a broad range of sectors including charity and community, business and industry, arts and culture, sport and entertainment.

See you tomorrow for a packed day. I understand it kicks off at roughly 9 am in Sydney.

  6. Fantastic! I can't wait to follow the tour with all of you. Charlotte, I love that you put up a clock with Sydney time, but would it be possible for the clock to indicate AM or PM?

    1. Why not put Sydney on your smart phone with a World Clock App? Then you can check any time.

  8. Seriously, how does she look so gorgeous and refreshed off such a long flight?! And, I LOVE the look of the security dude's face along the back wall. He's got the Harry wedding lip-bite going on. It's cracking me up.

I am so excited for this tour. And so happy that we got a few pics of them arriving. Yay.

Charlotte - good luck to you over the next few weeks. And thanks in advance for what I know will be late nights/early mornings, multiple daily posts, and informative posts with wonderful pictures. You always do such an amazing time.

Plus? I love the new website banner for the tour. LOVE it :)

    2. Seriously, they don't look like they just got off a long flight. It must be so refreshing for her to have someone help prep her before she deplanes.

      So excited for this tour!!

    3. A hairdresser with her, but no stylist. Healthy eating, love, ability to sleep on airplanes, and makeup help during an acting career is my guess.

    4. Google the first class suites on Quantas and it’ll give you one part of the equation. If she were in coach class I think it’s be impossible to look that good but with a bed, an Ambien, and some privacy things run smoother on a long flight. Not that she doesn’t also possess beauty and grace!

      Delete
    5. I agree--but I doubt she took an Ambien. Harry may have!

  9. Lovely banner, Charlotte! By the time I’m up and at it tomorrow it may be nightfall in Australia! Buckle up everyone-here we go!

  10. They look wonderful considering the length of the trip. It will be interesting to see what aspects of the trip have been embargoed. I read that there were some political ramifications in one area. Unfortunately, I do not remember the city that will be holding elections. It is such a packed tour that I'm sure it will only be a hickup in their schedule. Thanks to you Charlotte we can look forward to a wonderful tour experience ourselves.

    1. Yes, the embargoed activities thing is so interesting. Is this typical, does anyone know? Did this happen on Will & Kate's tours? If so, what types of engagements did the embargoed activities turn out to be?

(my 17 yo son not too happy about it although he knows it could have been so much worse)

Anyway, thanks Charlotte in advance and hope you've had some sleep! We love you❤

  15. My goodness, ddin't expect to see arrival pictures so soon. Meghan looks like she just came off a short flight! I think Ben Mulroney is probably there for work, as he is the host of a Canadian entertainment news show as well as a morning show on one of the three Canadian networks. It appears that Jessica would be there privately but conveniently is also an opportunity to see Harry and Meghan? Try to get enough rest, Charlotte!

Welcome to Australia, the Land of Downunder, Harry and Meghan! I hope their stay will be memorable and enjoyable! I would imagine that they hired out First Class and travelled in style on this long flight. A bit of sleep and some good food and the long flight is a breeze.

  18. you're so quick! it was funny on the morning shows this morning here in Aus because they spent ages tracking a British Airways flight, and then it turned out the royals were on Qantas flight landing an hour later!
can't wait to see Harry and Meghan in places I know!

  19. Whew! I can't keep up with them or you, dear Charlotte! Here's hoping that they get some rest and relaxation in today, because it's going to be a tiresome schedule for all us! So glad the Mulroneys are in town- it'll give Meghan some time to decompress with some girl talk. I wasn't expecting this early arrival until tomorrow- no wonder they didn't stay to party with the Yorks! Here's to a fun two weeks!

  21. Did you see Prince Harry has been appointed an aide-de-camp to the QEII? I wonder if this is related to the embargoed event(s)? Maybe he will be doing something on her behalf in his new role.

Does anyone else know what an aide-de-camp does besides acting on the monarch's behalf?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He gives advice to the monarch, too.
The position is given to a senior military officer who is appointed to act as the honorary military attendant to the king or queen.
Only a handful of royals hold the title at present: the now retired Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Kent, the Prince of Wales, Captain Mark Phillips, the Duke of York, the Earl of Wessex, Sir Timothy Laurence, the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex.

  22. They look as well rested as can be after that ridiculously long flight. I need to hire a stylist whenever I travel lol

  24. Wow! Despite all the cameras they look so unpretentious and casual for their arrival. Love it. Meghan and Harry both look like the royals who could also be your next door neighbor. Its definitely different and we'll see if they maintain this totally approachable, unpretentious look throughout the tour.

  25. Thanks, Charlotte. You’re quick😊

  26. Glad to see Meghan doing her homework in flight, what a huge task this must be for her. I remember how exciting it was when Kate and William did their first tour. Must be nerve-wracking. Thank you, Charlotte! You’re asleep, I’m about to switch on “Poldark” here in the States; and it’s almost noon in Sydney. Funny old world.

  47. Hooray! I was so hoping for this, for them personally off course AND now I will be pregnant same time as Meghan! I am now 15 weeks + 2 days and my baby is due on April 6th. So I don't agree with the royal reporters that the baby is due in April/May. If she is past the 12 week scan and shared the news on friday with the family, I think the baby is due mid april / end of april at the latest. Well, we'll never know 'cause babies come at their own time!

I am happy for them and that she is in good health and able to go on tour. Great timing these two! I am sure they got good medical advice about Zika. In general, countries as a whole are being marked as 'zika high/low risk', when it really is region specific within the country.

Side note: I just knew William and Kate were going for a third child when they skipped on their annual trip to Mustique now 1,5 yrs ago.

Great, great news for them and looking even more forward to the tour!

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
