Duchess Meghan Praises Teenagers "Intention to Really Change the World" During School Visit!

Following an early morning at Bondi Beach with inspirational mental health charity OneWave, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to Admiralty House for a quick change before travelling to MacArthur Girls High School to see the incredible work being done by students in human rights, social justice and women's empowerment.

The Duke and Duchess enjoyed a dance performance upon arrival.

We've been treated to an abundance of wonderful photos throughout the tour capturing very sweet moments between the couple.

The Duke and Duchess with NSW premiere Gladys Berejiklian.

Harry and Meghan meet representatives from the school.

The tour itinerary is incredibly varied, owing to the number of events scheduled the couple were able to include their core areas of focus. The engagement at MacArthur Girls High School brought Meghan's passion for supporting and empowering women and girls to the fore.

The couple visited the National Rugby League's In Harmony programme, which works to unite and empower young people to be advocates of positive change in their communities. Talking to a group of teenagers about part-time jobs, Meghan recalled: “My first job when I was 14, I remember taking out the trash, all sorts. It gives you a good work ethic, right?”

Hannah Furness reports: Meghan told girls: "You guys all remind me so much of myself when I was growing up. I went to an all girls school which was incredibly diverse as well. I think being around such empowered young women, it becomes something that you all just grasp onto to understand your world. It’s made you confident and well-spoken. You have an intention set to really do something to change the world, and you have to keep it up. It makes me so emotional. You’re doing really, really good work and I’m so happy that we’re here. We give you our full support." The teenage girls had worked on a project to make boxes for vulnerable women, taking donated supplies to police stations and refuges. They've also produced a book for young children teaching them about poverty and being kind to others.

Harry spoke of the importance of men playing their part in the fight for equality. "Men can help as well by getting involved, we have to,” he said. “We need to get men’s voices involved as soon as possible."

The In League In Harmony program aims to promote social cohesion by addressing issues such as social disengagement, racism, gender inequality and bullying and empowering youth to be agents of change in a bid to create a more cohesive and inclusive society. Prince Harry was announced as the new patron of England's Rugby Football League in 2006.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said:

"It is a great honour for one of our community programs to have been selected by The Duke and Duchess to participate in," Greenberg said.
"The Duke and Duchess are incredibly active and giving of their time all over the world in encouraging greater respect and inclusiveness amongst communities and our game is grateful that Their Royal Highnesses took time as part of their Royal Tour to meet some of our In League In Harmony participants.'

More from The Telegraph:

Tahlia Ohenhen, 15, told the Duke and Duchess how another group had created picture books to teach younger children about poverty and encourage them to treat those less fortunate with kindness and empathy.
Describing how they had written and illustrated it, she told the couple: “We were able to put the book together, create it, get it finalised and get it published… I mean printed, sorry.” “That [getting it published] is the next step,” the Duchess told her, as the girls laughed. “It’s very clever.”
The couple nodded as Tahlia added: “The younger you get your children educated on things like this, the easier it is for them to grow up and be aware of it and make a difference.” “Kindness and empathy lacks big time in the world,” Harry said. “It’s so great you are passionate about all of this. “You realise this is the generation that’s going to make all the difference?”

The Duke and Duchess posed for a group photo.

From the school, Prince Harry, accompanied by the Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Invictus Games competitors, climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

They officially raised the Invictus Flag, marking the arrival of the Invictus Games to Sydney.

Take a look at the stunning view.

A very special lady was there to support her "friend Harry". You'll recall Daphne Dunne spent time with the couple in Sydney on Tuesday. She has met Harry several times over the years and was delighted to meet Meghan.

Next, Harry and Meghan visited Prime Minister Morrison and his wife Jenny at Kirribilli House.

A video from the meeting.

The PM put quite a bit of thought into a gift for Baby Sussex. The Mail reports: "Speaking to Nova 969 hosts Fitzy and Whippa on Friday morning, the nation's leader said he'd chosen to gift May Gibbs children's books 'Snugglepot and Cuddlepie' to their future child. The iconic Australian author based the books off native wildlife found in the Blue Mountains region and called the series her 'bushland fantasy'.'When a young couple is having their first child, I just think that is one of the best things there is. I'm looking forward to congratulating them on that,' the PM told the hosts."

They also spent time with the leader of the opposition Bill Shorten and his wife Chloe at Admiralty House.

The Duchess looked effortlessly stylish in the Roksanda Athena two-tone dress (with thanks to Laura).

The £1,295 navy and light blue crepe piece is described as: "Roksanda Ilincic tells us that she's always had an affinity for '50s fashion – this 'Athena' dress almost looks like it's been plucked right out of the decade. Made from crepe that's just weighty enough to hold the A-line shape, this two-tone style is fitted through the bodice before falling to a gently pleated skirt." It's available in limited sizing at Harrods.

Meghan's wearing her Stuart Weitzman Legend pumps in haze beige.

Meghan accessorised with her Birks Bee Chic blue topaz earrings.

And the Birks Flex Wrap bracelet in white gold.

George Northwood is doing a fabulous job with Meghan's hair.

  4. Love this dress, shoes, and hair. She looks incredible! And, it looks like the dress has a red lining (when she sat down for the dance performance)? Love that - adds some additional interest.

Man, she and Harry are just so loved up. It's absolutely adorable. They both look so happy, relaxed, and in tune with each other. It's really nice to see.

Wyes, Inthekitchen, 5e dresse has hat seems a dark red lining, a shame we can’t see more ! This dressmakes Meghan looks a little plump around the waist .... baby saying hello to us ahahahaha
They do look so well together , such a pleasure to see Harry blooming’ into such a happy man , they both definitely agree to let see their feelings and emotions , and share with us in a way ....

  5. At first I thought "yet another black dress" but the ice blue hem stripe changes it and I think she looks gorgeous. And I love her hair styled like this. The loose tendrils around the face are a classic Hollywood actress tool to look better for the cameras by having the viewer automatically look between the two face framing tendrils, but hey, it works. Love her looks today.

    2. I am with you ladies, beautiful dresses for both events, Roksanda is one of my favourite designer, and Meghan is rocking this dress. I love how she changed her hairstyle too.

The maxi dress was long but it covered the wedge of dooms, so perfect, yeahhh, but the colour combo was so lovely, I concentrated on that mainly and her hair was the best here.

I agree, ali. This is the first dress on this tour that I don't like so much (to me it seems not her style) but apparently a lot of people do which is fine! Another great engagement. The teenagers have VERY strong motivation to go ahead with all their plans and activities, that's for sure! I like how Meghan said meeting them has made her emotional. She really has a big heart!

  24. Love, love, LOVE her hair! I hope there’s a photo somewhere along the way showing it more from the back, but I don’t imagine there will be very many shots from that angle. Charlotte, your title for this blog has turned out to be so entirely apt for so many of us. 26. What a lovely dress on Meghan. I was imagining her being intrigued by the young woman's account of putting together a book and getting it printed--with Meghan's very recent experience in doing the same thing for the women of Grenfell Tower, perhaps she gave some advice on getting it published. (I am happy to report having converted my household to enjoying Middle Eastern cooking with the book "Together".) I'm sure a lot of us would buy the book for our children and grandchildren, etc. You can't have too many books about kindness for young children to learn from, can you? It sounds like a winner to me.

    4. Mmmmmm! I first tried the Persian Chicken with Barberry Rice, and oh my! it was so good, but since we didn't have barberries, I used dried sour cherries instead (I looked this up online). We ate this rice again with vegetables from our garden, steamed. Then we had the Algerian Couscous (we already eat couscous a lot); and latest thing was the Mushroom Soup, made with chicken stock already on hand and then no chicken in the soup, just as a variation. Another time I'll put in the chicken. I'm probably not a good example to follow, because cookbooks to me are usually just suggestive. I like to experiment, a lot . . . Luckily, my people eat everything and always say, "Oh, this is so good!" With this cookbook, I'm following the spices and herbs and things pretty carefully though, so that I can learn the right tastes. Have fun!

  29. Meghan has looked fantastic on this tour. I think her clothing choices have been ideal for the event and for the point she is at in her pregnancy. I keep finding myself wondering though how on earth she is handling the jet lag. When I travel I am completely wiped-out. She looks fresh and ready to go every day. Seriously, is there anyone out there that knows how they negotiate jet lag on these royal tours?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Do you travel in a first class Qantas suite Laura? If you have to sit in the cramped tourist seats there is little opportunity to relax and sleep comfortably. Time differences matter but comfort on the trip helps. Sometimes going straight to bed on one end and trying to stay awake until your usual bedtime on the other end helps. Usually flights going West depart late evening while those going East depart late afternoon. They took the overland route via Singapore. I think that has a several hour lay-over at some point. I don't believe they were actually in flight for 22 hours.

    3. If you mean sashes an tiaras, I expect you will be disappointed. Australia is a young, diverse, laid-back nation. There’s a strong republican sentiment. Harry and Meghan bring a refreshing take on monarchy that will go down much better than stiff poses at a safe remove. Taking off their shoes at the beach might keep Australia in the Commonwealth for years more.

    4. Of course no Greybird that's not her style and it's not what I mean when I think at something more royally and it was good to see them taking off their shoes, we all do it and they are people just like us.

Anett I don't think a slightly polished look in a few occasions could state she doesn't means business, I'm thinking at the wonderful yellow dress from this summer party, just to name one, Nothing major tbh

    5. Yes, they are royal. Thankfully they are bringing with them the new RF for the current generation. They are absolutely in touch with the realities of the day and the peoples of the world. They are both incredible representatives for the UK and RF. All the other members appear untouchable, fortunately H&M reach out and touch people through their actions rathe then their speeches. W&K first brought this to the RF, thankfully H&M have taken it one step further due to their personalities and sincerity of purpose.

I am really trying to understand what you mean, but honestly I am struggling. Slightly polished look, where, look at the list of engagements so far, hardly any pomp and reception yet, also you applaud barefoot at the beach, that never be royally. I hope you find what you are looking for later, if not, don't be too disappointed.

    8. Oh no, Anett I'll not be disappointed, they are doing great work so that's what matters in the first place. but surely I'll pop in if something will match my imagination on the outfit front ;)

  32. Love the dress, not on Meghan. And as someone with similar hair texture as Meghan, the loose wave thing... ugh. It makes her hair look damaged at the ends and it isn't a cute look, imo. I know I'll get hate for that, but it just doesn't look good. She needs someone who know how to work her hair texture or she needs to rock her natural hair.

She, however, looks happy, engaged, and like she's enjoying this tour. I remember those first weeks of pregnancy and how exhausted one is. That she looks that good, while dealing with traveling, jet lag, and pregnancy exhaustion is a credit to her.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Let's lead with the negative: I did not think it was possible to make the Duchess look heavy, even considering her pregnancy, but this blue dress achieves the impossible on a woman who is very slim and petite. Very unfortunate, although I do like the colour blocking and detail. Definitely the worst choice in what has so far been a stellar sartorial tour for for her - as opposed to the usual hit-and-miss. In general, though, I'd just like to comment what a wonderful job covering this tour has been. I'm really learning a fair amount about what concerns the people of Australia and how their issues are being highlighted by the Sussexes. Thanks so much for your great posts and images!

  34. I love her hair half-up! It frames her face in such a lovely way. My only quibble I think the dress would have looked better with navy shoes, her legs and feet sort of disappear beyond the hem of the dress.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love the dress on the website but for some reason the photos don’t seem flattering the extra volume seems to make Meghan look bigger than she really is. I think it’s too much volume in the skirt in front.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I also think tanzanite iolite or amythyst earrings might have gone better with the bottom of the dress. Too bad Kate couldn’t loan her that gorgeous set of tanzanite earrings. I have a local American artist that made a gorgeous pair of dangly green onyx and iolite drop earrings, in lapis and iolite they would have been stunning on Meghan

  45. Not surprising, there is a mixture of likes an dislikes on this dress for Meghan. I do think this is a dress that everyone should have in her closet - it's so very feminine. I have one that is black and the border is white. I get compliments every time I wear. Typically it can be dressed up or down and it's so great for party-like events.

We'll - hopefully - see this again and perhaps styled a little differently and everyone will have a different perspective again. I thought the nude heels was a nice change (it dressed it down a little bit for the school outing). And I love that bracelet and the earrings.

I watched a live feed of the bridge climb - as that's on my bucket list next time I go to Australia - and it didn't appear to take too long. Looked like fun. Harry was so engaged, stopping to talk with the guide, etc.

Looking good at this stage in pregnancy is not easy, your waist is expanding but you don’t look pregnant so clothes just don’t sit right. I am not crazy about this dress for that reason, it just doesn’t sit right at the waist. I think she might be further on than 12 weeks, she def has a little bump. Sinead

Definitely seemed like it brought back a lot of childhood memories for Duchess Meghan. She’s relatable in so many ways, sharing that she got her 1st job at age 14 & how all of that hardwork shaped her to the person she is today. Their sartorial choices have been lovely and overall Harry & Meghan are a gorgeous couple, the way they treat each other & the people they meet, is so endearing, especially in these times of strife in our world.

From the earlier yoga event at Bondi Beach through the last with Harry climbing the bridge to raise the Invictus Games flag, it’s been so interesting watching & learning about so many special programmes. Everyone is doing an amazing job. Looking forward to the start of the amazing Invictus Games!

  51. I can't really imagine how tired Meghan must already be. I saw a short video clip earlier of her in an unguarded moment at the school, and she just looked exhausted. I certainly don't blame her! She's fortunate that she has her strong yoga background to support her physically as she goes through this portion of her pregnancy while on SUCH a jam-packed trip. There really aren't any down days, are there, in the schedule? She may be forced to take one mid-tour, I would imagine, or at least beg off the occasional event, although I know she would hate to disappoint anyone. I can't see either of the Sussexes missing any event that involves children, certainly!

Fortunately, I suspect this will only be the first of many trips they make to Australia, New Zealand, and other Commonwealth members Down Under during the course of their royal lives. And when they return, with little one(s) in tow, it will only make everything even more exciting!

Daphne Dunn is very fortunate to have carers who are so willing to indulge her love of Prince Harry. I imagine that getting her around must be difficult, but she's certainly going all out, planning to attend Invictus events starting Monday! She's quite a lady. As we get older, we all need a handsome young prince like Harry to become our friend!

On far more shallower notes, I may be the only person who doesn't like the Roksanda dress on the Duchess. I think the skirt is too long and heavy for her petite frame, even though the dress itself is lovely. The dress she wore in the morning to Bondi, however, was absolutely adorable on her! And elsewhere in the media I saw a photo of her with her hands wrapped beneath her tummy, leaning back a bit; I don't know if she's actually beginning to show -- although I did at 8 weeks with my son -- or just had a bit of a backache. Either one is entirely possible. I actually suspect the former, however, just relaxing a moment and letting her tummy muscles have a bit of a rest -- even early in pregnancy, sometimes you just need to not worry about anything pressing on your waistline, and it looked like she was taking a moment to enjoy the placement of the horizontal bands on that adorable dress. I was also also amused to see Harry wasn't required to don the usual coverall to climb the Harbour Bridge; normally they make people to do that to ensure they don't have anything in their pockets that could fall to the bridge deck below and hurt someone. Royal privileges extend into the most unlikely arenas!

Love the dress esp the light blue border. It could have been a tad shorter but still looks great
