The Sussexes Take Sussex By Storm!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their first official trip to their namesake county Sussex today, undertaking an array of engagements in Chichester, Bognor Regis, Brighton and Peacehaven.

On their wedding day, the Queen conferred a dukedom on Prince Harry as a wedding gift. Harry is the 2nd Duke of Sussex. The first duke was Prince Augustus Frederick, sixth son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. The dukedom, conferred on Augustus Frederick in November 1801, became extinct when he died 42 years later because he had no legitimate issue. During his life he campaigned for the abolition of slavery. Meghan is the first Duchess of Sussex.

The news was met with delight by royalists and officials in Sussex. Now, four and a half months later, the couple are beginning what promises to be a lifelong relationship with the area. Organisers were informed today's visit would mark "the first of many" in the coming years. "Their intention is to really get to know the county." The pair are said to be eager to get to know the people, organisations and issues at the heart of Sussex.

Peter Field, Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex told the Eastbourne Herald:

"Ever since their wedding day the people of Sussex have been eagerly awaiting news of when the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex will visit and it was a great pleasure for me when I heard that they were coming and I was asked to help organise the visit. "There is no doubt that since Her Majesty the Queen gave them the title of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their wedding day, at a ceremony watched by over two billion people worldwide, that most people in the world are now aware of the beautiful counties of East and West Sussex and how beautiful they are.
"I am aware that visitor numbers have already increased, and I know that many businesses are now taking advantage of the additional publicity. "In times of economic restraint we all need something to cheer us up and the visit this week is no exception. "Their Royal Highnesses I know are keen to develop their relationship with the county and have indicated their intention is to visit regularly.'

The packed day began with a visit to Edes House, located at the heart of Chichester, which is the county town of West Sussex.

Before engagements commenced, it was time for a walkabout.

There were huge cheers when they arrived, Meghan was greeted with a hug.

A sea of flags.

The Mail reports:

'Royal superfan Zoe McManus, 33, said she could not put into words how happy she was that she had met the royal couple in her home town. Draped in a Union flag banner with a picture of the pair on it and wearing a similarly styled hat, she said: 'I'm so happy. I met Harry and told him I was proud of him and I loved him lots.
'He joked and said he liked my hat. I think they are great because they are our generation. I love them. It is great the work they are doing for mental health. I think they are great.' One seven year old told Meghan he had been 'waiting for her since before school time', to which the Duchess softly replied 'well, I am so grateful, it is so lovely to meet you'.
Local resident Sally Harper, 56, who shook hands with Meghan said: 'They are just the loveliest couple, we feel very proud to have them come to our county which is of course their county too and to see them spend so much time with all the children is very special, we love them.'

Harry and Meghan met a group of youngsters who had prepared a guide to Sussex for them.

They were very excited to meet the couple.

More from the Mail Online:

'Meghan was first to encounter the youngsters, smart in their red and grey uniforms, and said she wanted to shake each one's hand individually and find out their names. 'So, why aren't you in school,' she said. 'Are you on a school trip?' She was handed the guide by Alex Witcombe and George Baker, both ten. 'Oh my goodness, guys, thank you, that's very cool. It's an A- to Zee (pronounced the American way).'We thought we would tell you some great places to go when you are in Sussex,' explained their head of year Charlotte Sleep. 'Please do come again, we love having you.'
Harry immediately spotted the youngsters and exclaimed: 'You've got a very, very similar school uniform to the one I had when I was at Wetherby School in London, all those years ago. Are you on a school trip?' 'Sort of,' said one of the boys. 'Sort of,' exclaimed Harry, 'who is your teacher?''We've come to see you,' their teacher, Mrs Sleep, explained. Harry stretched out his arm to shake hands, prompting Mrs Sleep to squeal: 'I'm not letting go!''Um, please let go,' he replied, pulling a comedy face. 'Is this like a maths lesson or a field trip?'

Harry chatting with the group.

Meghan received a lovely bunch of flowers from a little girl.

Meeting another group of schoolchildren.

A very nice video from the walkabout.

Harry and Meghan were shown the rare Sussex copy of the American Declaration of Independence.

The Mirror reports: "When handed a copy of the Sussex Declaration which has been specially prepared for her, the Duchess said: “Oh my goodness, that’s great, thank you so much, that’s really special thank you”. On behalf of the records office, Mrs Walker also presented Meghan with a copy of the book ‘Roots of America’, an anthology of the documents relating to American history kept in the West Sussex records office."

The Sussex Declaration is one of only two contemporary handwritten ceremonial manuscript copies, the other being the signed copy housed in the National Archives in Washington DC. The engagement tied in very nicely with Meghan's roots.

How was a copy of the declaration discovered in Sussex? A 2017 Telegraph story reveals:

'Researchers from Harvard University were shocked to unearth the manuscript while compiling a database of later reproductions of the declaration. The only other parchment manuscript copy is kept in the National Archives in Washington DC. According to the researchers, staff at the West Sussex Record Office, in Chichester, had not taken a particular interest in the copy, which was produced ten years after the declaration, before the team from Harvard got in touch. They are now said to be “working on a valuation”.
Danielle Allen, a Harvard professor, said the manuscript had been kept “folded up” until the university contacted the office. “They had not dated it and they did not know what they had,” she told The Telegraph. “There are lots of later reproductions floating around. The assumption was probably there are lots of copies so this one didn’t stand out. It was news to them to discover what a special document this was.” Prof Allen said it was “super surprising” to discover such a “very precious item” tucked away in a local record office. “We want to celebrate them for having preserved it for the last 50 years,” she added.'

Edes House was built at the end of the 17th century for local maltster John Edes, and his wife Hannah, and now has Grade 1 listed status and has been carefully restored. Today, the Georgian mansion is a popular wedding and corporate venue with exquisitely decorated rooms.

They signed the visitors' book.

Edes House shared this beautiful photo of the couple departing.

Next, the Duke and Duchess travelled along the coast to Bognor Regis where they officially opened the University of Chichester's Engineering and Digital Technology Park.

The cutting-edge Technology Park has been designed to offer practical experiences in partnership with local industry. The couple joined an animation workshop, one of the many areas at the University working to transform the way STEM subjects are taught by combining science and engineering with the creative technologies.

In the Production Theatre, the University Chamber orchestra are rehearsing Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

Emily Andrews reports: Animation Students Joe and Kieran were very taken with Duchess Meghan. "She’s hot!" said Kieran. "I expected the royals to be stereotypically upright and cold, but she was very friendly and relaxed. Harry also seemed very chilled."

They donned tech goggles during the visit.

From there, Harry and Meghan travelled along the coast to the vibrant seaside city of Brighton and Hove in East Sussex.

As in Chichester, locals turned out in force.

The royal pair spent quite a lot of time meeting as many people as possible.

Meghan told a group of children her favourite subject at school was math.

The Duke and Duchess visited the iconic Royal Pavilion.

Starting its life in the mid 1780s, the Royal Pavilion was built by George, Prince of Wales, who later became the Prince Regent. The Duke and Duchess toured several of the pavilion's rooms, learning more about the building's history and the impact that it had on the social development of Brighton in the 18th century.

During George IV’s reign, the Pavilion functioned as a place at which he could escape from London and the stiff formality of life there. At Brighton he could enjoy his favourite things: music concerts, balls and banquets. In the 15 years following his death in 1830, Brighton Pavilion was used as a residence by both William IV (1765–1837) and Queen Victoria (1819–1901). Below, the Pavilion in 1920.

Listen to the cheers.

Next, they walked to Survivors' Network, a charity that supports survivors of sexual violence and abuse in Sussex. The Duke and Duchess had the opportunity to talk to service users, volunteers and staff.

Survivors' Network was established in 1990 by a group of female survivors of childhood sexual abuse to provide services that would support other female survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Since then, they have grown to an organisation that now offers a range of professional relevant services to survivors of any gender aged 14+ who have experienced any form of sexual violence. They are contacted by 1500 people each year, a number that's growing.

A representative described the visit as a "wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of our organisation, and of the issue of sexual violence. The MeToo movement has done amazing work opening these conversations - we are committed to continuing them."

The network commissioned a drawing to give Harry and Meghan as a gift. Drawing of Dogs drew Meghan's dog Guy talking about dismantling the patriarchy. When Meghan received the drawing she revealed their second dog, rumoured to be a black Labrador is in fact a girl. "They keep getting her name wrong". We can safely assume the pet is not named Oz as previously reported :)

Rebecca English reports:

'The couple were also given badges by the same artist, Henry James Garrett, saying: 'You have a superpower and it's called empathy.' The duchess said: 'I love that! This is really special - thank you.'
During the meeting the couple met survivors of sexual abuse, both male and female, as well as volunteers from the Survivors' Network and Mankind, a group for men. They included Patrick Sandford, 66, a theatre director who lives in north London and has written a play, Groomed, about his own experiences.
'I was abused as a child in a state primary school in Kent by my teacher for a year. I didn't talk about it at the time, I found it confusing, bewildering. It was horrible. I moved to another school after a year and was able to bury it. But the psychological effects were lasting. I felt very bad. My self esteem was very low. It was only when he was in his mid-fifties that he decided to write about it. 'I had to talk about it. So I wrote a play. It has been performed in London and at the Brighton Festival, where it won three prizes. It is now being filmed.'

Travelling further east, Harry and Meghan's final engagement of the day was a visit to JOFF Youth Centre in the coastal town of Peacehaven.

The centre is a community hub that offers a range of positive activities, a ‘chill out’ area and music practice room.

At the centre, the Duke and Duchess met young people from youth groups across East Sussex to hear their strategic plans and priorities around mental health and emotional wellbeing. Their discussions are part of Takeover Challenge day, which is a national initiative that encourages organisations to put young people into real life decision-making positions.

During a chat about mental health, Meghan spoke about the importance of opening up. "There's no right or wrong answer". Harry introduced himself during a conversation on mental health. "My name is Harry. I have two dogs and a lovely American wife". :)

The couple posed for a group photo.

A terrific first visit to Sussex!

The Duchess selected an array of pieces from several brands for her first visit to Sussex.

Meghan wore the Emporio Armani Cashmere Double Cloth Coat with Classic LapelsThe sold out piece is described as a "timeless coat, perfect for completing your season's look with casual elegance."

Meghan teamed the coat with the dark green Straight Fit Silk Shirt from & Other Stories. The shirt features a thin collar and a slightly longer back, giving it a "modern and versatile" appeal. It retails for $99 here.

The Duchess wore the forest green Hugo Boss leather pencil skirt with panelled structure.

Meghan's gorgeous new emerald bag is the Gabriela Hearst Demi Satin Tote.

The $1,995 bag is described as: "A smaller version of Gabriela Heart's cult 'Nina' bag, this style is named after Demi Moore and shaped like a fortune-cookie. It's been made in Italy from lustrous emerald satin that's backed with leather to preserve the sculptural shape." It's available at Net-A-Porter.

Meghan wore several pieces of jewellery today beginning with the Adina Reyter Pavé Teardrop Necklace.

Meghan's new ring is the £85 Missoma Manta Open Heart Signet Ring. The Duchess also wore her Catbird stacking rings.

Three Missoma bracelets completed the accessories.

The 18ct Gold Vermeil Double Chain Bracelet, the Gold Leaf bracelet and the Gold Plated Rainbow Moonstone Beaded Leaf Bracelet.

Meghan's pumps are by Stuart Weitzman.

It really does take a village when it comes to identifying royal style sometimes. A very big thank you to Perth Fashion, What Meghan Wore, Meghan's Fashion Heaven, Meghan Maven and Meghan's Mirror for their work today.

I expect we'll see the full tour itinerary by Friday at the very latest.

Thank’you charlotte for’this quick snap ! Meghan is aboslutely perfect, simplicity and class ! And I am a great fan of her coat length , it used’ to be called 7/8 some years ago , and it gives a lighter feeling to the silhouette . Waiting for the rest of the day !

I really like this look. The only thing I don't love is thw two different shades of green between the top and skirt. She looks good I just wish she had chosen a different top. Side note: I am so jealous of her skin. It always looks so radiant and lovely.

    2. I thought the same thing, Courtney although the fabric of the top could photograph differently than the leather skirt. On my monitor the top looks almost black.

Depending’ on the material, a colour look quite different ! The bad’ seems of’the same colour as the skirt, both made of leather .... I used to work in a printing factory where we printed colour charts for cards, paints, make ups , and I,learned a lot about’ colours and the way we see them , it was really interesting , I loved that job !

Erika - Thank you! I went and read product reviews and saw several complaints about the price being too high so I expected it to cost an exorbitant amount. I was pleasantly surprised at the actual cost. I already spend more than that on my tinted moisturizer and foundation. I am definitely going to try it as soon as I am out of my current brand. Thanks again!

BethNY - On my screen it looks a couple shades darker than the skirt. The more I look at the outfit the more I think a blouse the color of the shoes/coat with a matching green print would have made it more cohesive. She looks great regardless.

    10. I'm confused. Are you using the primer as makeup Erika? Is this primer supposed to go on by itself instead of UNDER a foundation or tinted moisturizer? I confess I don't use anything on my face anymore unless there will be pictures, so I am a bit behind, but I have always used primers under my foundation. I use the Dior one when I do and it is fine. Pore minimizer, which I need.

      Delete
    11. I love the skirt and the shirt is fine for a casual look but I agree that the two shades of green seem odd to me. I would have worn a different top with this skirt. But that is minor. She looks gorgeous. What a beautiful woman she is.
TOS used to be such a go-to in my twenties. I hardly wear it anymore. I guess I should check it out again.

      Delete
    12. Rosman, yes, I use the primer as my only base. I like light coverage so it works perfectly but it still looks great used under a light wash of base too. A friend of mine uses facial mosturizer then the LM Radiance primer then LM Illuminating Mosturizer spf 20 and has super glowy skin but the Illuminating Mosturizer comes in shades and the lightest is still too dark for me, so I don't use it. ( I swear I don't work for or own stock in LM or Sephora!)

    13. Ooh that's really great to know Erika. I always use a really good serum and then an SPF-moisturizer and then anything else on top of that.. But as I am getting older I have been finding that foundation and BB creams make me look older. I have been investing in really good creams, microderms and glycolic peels regularly. So I rarely wear foundation but I will wear BB creams occasionally. About 90% of the time I just use eyeliner/mascara and lipstick and nothing on the skin except moisturizer, though. Your tips sound great - exactly what I need, some light coverage with a dewy glow. I will definitely check this out.

    14. Less is definitely more after a certain age. Using a primer was such a foreign idea to me because they didn't exist when I started wearing cosmetics but it really makes a difference either alone or layered with other products. There is a whole new range of products out there now that blur and illuminate, and, they are a game changer imo.

    3. Or perhaps a signet ring with monogram.

    4. Well, we were right about it being a signet ring but wrong about the design. Kind of disappointed that it's not her coat of arms or monogram. Oh well.

    1. Indigoisle, I agree! I was fortunate enough once to have a professional decorator work with me to decorate a few rooms in my house. She had to constantly stop me from being too “matchy matchy” and I finally got it! I now appreciate an outfit like the Duchess is wearing today where there is a theme but everything is not exactly matching. It is sophisticated and looks fabulous. I especially love the contrasting shoes.

I just have to say this, she is such a stark difference than all the other women Harry Dated-it’s like all the other women were just playing grown up and Meghan Is the real deal, she’s already arrived, I think Harry is just in Awe of her beauty, intellect and confidence, and I love it this way, Harry seems so happy, he is practically bouncing off the tips of his toes!!!

    1. You are so right, Indigoisie. Meghan does make Harry very happy. I don't always like her choice of clothes, or the ongoing black and neutrals that she wears. There is no denying, however, how poised and right she is to fit into the life of being Harry's wife. Meghan is so comfortable in this role.

    2. Your comments are both so true, Laura and Indigoisle! The happiness just emanates off Harry. I'm so glad. I think it's quite incredible how easily and gracefully she seems to have fitted into her role - I would find it very daunting and difficult. Although I suppose it's a bit easier with the love of your life supporting you the whole way...

  15. Wow, what a great look from head to toe! Love the green top and skirt, and shoes. She looks elegant but not stuffy. I wish she'd adopt this more for her daytime look. As much as I love the trademark black trousers I do miss a pop of color now and then. This minimalist and very "Meghan" but it doesn't have the same business-like/boardroom look of the black trousers/black blouse.

  20. First, thanks Charlotte for your excellent job as always!
Second, Meghan looks so good. Her makeup and hair is phenomenal. So natural yet so polished, just perfect! I always try to find something "off" on her outfit as she once mentioned as her signature fashion trick- and I am always happy when it's no earrings. Sometimes I just don't feel like wearing them, too, and I am really glad to see that the duchess apparently feels the same, lol. This look is an overall hit for me.
I only have one minor quibble about Meg's outfits lately and that is the priciness. Since her M&S' headpiece for Celia McCorquodale's wedding I haven't seen anything that I could afford to include in my closet which makes me sad, lol.

  21. Meghan looks stunning as usual and they both just glow with happiness! I wonder if many of the pieces we have seen Meghan wear are ones she already owns. Read some criticism of the fact that she wears a lot of non-British designers which I think is unfair. Why shouldn’t she champion her favourites from her own part of the world but also thought she may well already have a fab wardrobe to choose from so why buy lots of new stuff? Annie

  22. Her overall look is just beautiful! I love the coat so much, and finally, a less expensive gorgeous blouse! I like all the "new" gold jewelry---I also like gold-colored rather than white gold jewelry. I thought she looked wonderful, and Harry looked good in his not-blue-again gray suit. Looking forward to rereading all the details of this visit. It's wonderful to get a history lesson combined with great photos!! Thank you again, Charlotte!

  23. o.k., having examined every photo multiple times, I am still in love with all she is wearing (he looks good 2). The close up of her hair looks like there are grays coming in....I know people get chapped when someone brings up baby, but I believe newly pregnant women shy away from using chemicals on their hair. I just sayin'. I love the green and the 2 different color variations and all and the beige accessories just pops off the dark clothing. Gold jewels and that BAG complete the look. Anyone know the make-up she uses?

    3. Theresa, around the time of the wedding Allure magazine had an article about products Meghan uses based on an old Allure interview she did, comments from her former make up artist and comments Meghan made in the past to Birchbox and Beauty Banter. Obviously, I haven't any idea if she still uses this stuff but they mentioned MAC eyeliner in Teddy, YSL Touche Eclat concealer, Chanel Sublimage foundation, Nars blush in Orgasm and Makeup For Ever HD powder. People in the industry thought she wore Charlotte Tillbury lipstick in Very Victoria for her engagement interview.

    5. You're welcome. As a footnote, she definitely uses a cream highlighter as well. That's how she gets that dewey look. I can see it today above her eyebrows, cheekbones, down the bridge of her nose, chin and cupid's bow. Also, her makeup seems to stay very vibrant, so she probably sets it all with a setting spray.

    6. I think you are right Erika. I do think that she has fundamentally good skin - you can't see any makeup in creases and wrinkles.
I also like that she tightlines her eyes. Unlike Kate, who looks better and brighter without tightlining Meghan actually looks better with it. I have always tightlined and was a bit confused when Diane von F came out and criticised Kate for doing it because I had always done it and I think girls in our generation always used to tightline. But then I saw Kate without it and I do think that her unusual coloring stands out better without tightlining. I still tightline though because my eyes definitely look better. Maybe it is to do with color of eyes .. I don't know.

I think she has extra eyelashes on as well. She is an expert with makeup obviously and her eye shadow stands up to close ups making her eyes really stand out without looking too artificial. She doesn't seem to use blushers at all.

    8. Hi Rosman. Oh yeah, she has amazing skin to begin with. Great genes.

I heard Bobbi Brown say once that women over 40 should tightline because it gives eyes definition but I know it doesn't do me any favors. I don't know why it works for some women and not for others. Might have something to do with coloring or eye shape.

  24. The Duchess always looks so lovely in whatever she wears. But the blouse needed ironing! Does anyone know if she works with a stylist or has someone assist her in getting her clothes ready? 1. Yes! She looked so pretty--but that badly creased shirt really detracted from her overall appearance.

    2. Yes, I noticed that big crease across the front of the shirt and at first actually thought it was meant to be there, then realized that it was not. I am quite surprised about that.

    3. I remember reading that she was looking for a stylist/assistant over the summer, but I could be mistaken. For now, it seems her friend Jessica is still the one helping her but she lives in Toronto. It would be much better to have someone closer to the UK for reasons like the issue you stated.

I'm doing my best to bite my tongue regarding some of her style choices despite the fact that I agree with some of the criticisms. I'll wait until she's more settled with her team. There's already been a lot of change in her life over the past year, so the least I can do is be patient about some of the finer details.

  25. So great to see them visit Sussex! Love to see how excited the schoolchildren were to meet them. We're dealing with some high profile issues of sexual assault/abuse here in the US, so its great to see them make this issue a part of their day.

I love Meghan's look here, but I'm a bit disappointed that she chose all new, mostly designer pieces for this look. Its almost identical to two different outfits she's already worn- both in Ireland. By my count she's worn 3 dark green skirts and many more coats. I know she has to build a working royal wardrobe, and I of course love when she pulls of a fashion show-stopper. But I think repeating a few pieces would be a good move at this point.

    Replies
    1. Laura, are you certain that everything is new? I’m guessing that she wears things that she owned pre-Harry. I also think it is early to expect repeats - I don’t think it is quite a year since she began doing engagements and certainly not a year since the wedding.

      Delete
    2. CrissieP I thought the same thing. This leather skirt looks like something Meghan might have bought to wear last Christmas. I see it's not on sale but just seems like something she would have had in her wardrobe. I love it! Great piece!

      Delete
    3. According to People magazine on-line the skirt is marked down considerably...like it's been around for a while....and what's wrong with wearing all new for a while? I say give her time to build her wardrobe and then she can recycle if she likes. I 'm loving her choices...can't wait for the next event (which I think is today) to see what else she puts on. I'm looking at button down blouses right now at Ann Taylor (on-line) and I see a green one:)

      Delete
    4. Where is the source that what Meghan is wearing is all newly purchased? Meghan was a working professional before marriage & several pieces she purchased before marrying Harry. She has worn repeats already, yet that seems to be ignored. The shoes she wore in Sussex, looks like the same shoes that she wore at Invictus Games ceremony in Toronto, and that was before she was even engaged.

I always learn so much from your blog posts, Charlotte! "Harry is the 2nd Duke of Sussex. The first duke was Prince Augustus Frederick, sixth son of King George III and Queen Charlotte." That sure sheds some light on possible inspiration for the names of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's children! It is likely you have shared that before, but my first time reading. There are so many meaningful connections to the Sussex dukedom. Have to also mention that I am a firm fan of Meghan's use of separates to build a lovely outfit!

    1. Yes, but Harry is just Duke of Sussex, not the 2. This is the second creation of the title.

    2. Also, there is a school of thought which thinks queen Charlotte had African ancestry and was also biracial.

      Delete
    3. The debate about Queen Charlotte is an interesting one, bluhare. Can we call a person biracial if they have an African ancestor nine generations previously? I suppose we can but maybe mixed heritage is a better term. I don't know.

I recently read an article that the scholarly thinking is that Queen Charlotte was descended from a Moor. I'll have to search for that. So, maybe Meghan is a first for the royal family after all.

      Delete
    4. I don't know, Erika. Looking at her portraits I can certainly see why people think she has African ancestry although looking at some she does not at all. You may be right about the term; I was trying to think of what to say, so I picked biracial. And Moors were of African descent so perhaps that's so.

      Delete
    5. Yes, the portraits are vastly different depending on the painter. She appears to have been an interesting woman but the poor thing had way too many children. Yes, African descent either way. I can't really say if she looks North African to me either. Again, maybe in a couple of the paintings but not others.

  31. So so so incredibly chic. Not a fan of the bag as I’m just not a fan of satin as a whole (it’s too wedding/evening/prom to me) but the structure is very cool. I am a fan of separated dressing myself, so I can find a lot of inspiration from her styling ie not just dresses. The reason why is I feel you can get more use out of them and keep them looking fresh by mixing them together. While her taste runs high priced, and it’s not always a Home run for me, this is something I could emulate.
She really is an incredibly beautiful woman.
But my best take away for now from watching Kate forever and now Meghan is tweak my makeup and skin care routine and try to low end Meghan’s simple jewelry. THAT I can maybe afford and accomplish!!!! Lol

  35. I found it fascinating that on their first visit to Sussex, they saw an original copy of the “Declaration of Independence” and also visited a center for survivors of sexual assault. For those who don’t live in the US, were are currently in the midst of an investigation into sexual assault by the nominee for a life time Supreme Court Justice seat, with (in my opinion) a very credible accuser. With a president who has also been accused, many times, pouring fire on the flames. “I believe you” is an incredibly powerful slogan, it is the first step modern society needs to take to start changing the status quo. Of course I don’t believe they did this on purpose, but it was very on point.
On a fashion note, she looked fantastic, I prefer separates myself, more interesting, and you can wear them in many different ways. I also think it represents how many women dress for work, at least here in the US, dresses are less common for professional women. I also liked that she followed my personal rule for jewelry, if you wear a necklace, do not wear earrings. Looked like a great day!

M&H looked beautiful and so much in love today. They are a great couple!
I like her outfit but I agree with Courtney from NC, the blouse could have been "greenish" with some patterns.
A note on her hair..without locks in front, it would be better and less distracting. Also, it looks a bit frizzy, it might be for the weather. I always say to friends for their hairstyle "to follow their nature".. So, why not go with her natural curly, and maybe, short hair? Very handy in Australia, because it might be hot "down under". Just a suggestion...

  38. A really fresh, polished, professional look. I agree with others that I wish she'd done something a bit different with the top because it seems to not quite complement the skirt? Not quite the same color and not quite different enough? But that's just a nitpick. I really like all the green!

Green and cream seems to be something of a go-to for Meghan. It's the combo she chose for her engagement announcement and the Ireland tour.

  39. Thank you for such an interesting write up Charlotte. I really enjoyed reading it.

The visit seems to have gone very well - huge crowds and the Sussexes had such lovely interactions with them. So many absolutely stunning photographs! They also visited a lot of interesting places. Stand outs for me are the beautiful buildings - Brighton Pavilion and Edes House. Standard royal opening of a new centre - well done on your first plaque unveiling Meghan! Very interesting to read about the play 'Groomed' - I hadn't heard of it before. It seems to me that the ongoing effect of childhood sexual abuse on adults is a massive issue in the UK - I've watched (and cried during) quite a few British television series where an episode centres around this.

The most special part of this away day for me was the visit to Peacehaven. My grandfather was born there and his family left the town (and the UK) when he was a small boy. He always told people he came from a tiny village they wouldn't have heard of. I remember his delight when he recounted the tale of meeting a man who had not only heard of Peacehaven, but actually visited! I'm sure he would have been very pleased about the global attention concentrated on his childhood (and possible ancestral) home - as am I!

As to fashion, I think Meghan looked lovely. The look worked and it fitted her well! The only thing is the bag looks a bit silly at that size, although it is a gorgeous colour.

  42. Just a thought that I wanted to put out to the MAM community...have you ever noticed that Meghan's makeup shows up so much better in pictures than anyone else at any event she attends? Now, I realize that many women don't wear makeup or perhaps wear very little but it always seems that Meghan looks sooo much better than everyone else. What is her secret? Darker eye makeup? A second coat of mascara? It just drives me crazy wondering what her secret is. I wear eye makeup, sometimes I think I go a bit heavy but in photos you'd never know I had any on! So if anyone in the MAM community can shed some light on this phenomenon I'd be very grateful!

Okay, little rant over. Wow, just wow!!! From head to toe Meghan looks fantastic! I love this color on Meghan and the skirt fits like a dream, did she raid Queen Letizia's closet recently? I'm really liking the cream/beige coat and shoes with this outfit, the color really makes the green pop! And of course her excellent posture just makes everything she wears even better!!

How cute are these two?!?!? Harry just looks so smitten with his new bride and she seems to be glowing in his love and affection!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think it's two things:
      1) Meghan is naturally very photogenic. She has big eyes, a heart-shaped face, dark hair that frames her face, and a small mouth but rather full lips. So she's naturally going to look good no matter what. The camera loves her. It's like how you'd be hard-pressed to find a picture of Marilyn Monroe who didn't look amazing. Again Marilyn had the same formula: big eyes, heart-shaped face, a small mouth with rather full lips.

      2) Meghan favors makeup that is very subtle. She wears some bronzer to smooth her olive complexion, some blush, pale pink lipstick, and mascara. Her eyeliner is there but subtle. So she looks like a "natural beauty" -- just with some artfully applied makeup.

      3) And I think this is where her fashion choices come into play: we all know she favors a very sleek minimalist design for her clothes. The eyes go to her face always, rather than the clothes. It's very different from the traditional royal fashion which tend to draw attention to the fabrics rather than the face. Now keep in mind that the "royal style" as we know it is actually fairly recent: the big fascinators, the ruffly frilly dresses, etc. If you look at pictures of Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret when they were young you'll see that they dressed in a 1940's version of sleek: lots of satin dresses and pearl necklaces and even peep-toed shoes!

    2. Those two crazy kids are mad about each other and dont care if we know. Harry is so considerate of her too.

    3. Thanks Ivy Lin for such interesting thoughts! I completely agree that Meghan is a natural beauty and has the lit from within glow about her. Being a pale blonde I find that I just wash out in photos but for my wedding the makeup artist applied my eye makeup much darker than I normally would wear it and I actually looked pretty nice in the photos.

I've seen photos of HM and Margaret when they were younger and my goodness they were stunning. I do wish though that there were color photos available, all I've seen are b&w which doesn't show their clothes very well.

Hi bluhare, did you notice her lovely posture today? :)

    4. A few comments above; Erika noted with amazing expertise some spots/parts of the face that Meghan applies a cream highligter on. I tried it today and it works miracles!!! I don't know if it also makes some difference in the photos, but I found it very useful.

    5. You're welcome, Ella! It does make it look like the light is hitting the high points of one's face in a lovely way. When Meghan started going out on engagements, I was really impressed with how her face looked and did as much research as I could to replicate what I saw. I'm sure she has a lot of industry tricks up her sleeve that we wouldn't have any idea about though.

    6. Of course I noticed her posture, Lauri! It's one of the things I do look at. And I always smile when you comment on it!

One thing I was thinking though. I think it's lovely they're affectionate with one another, but can you imagine in a few years when maybe they aren't quite so passionate about each other and don't hold hands? Everyone will think they're heading to splitsville!

      Delete
    7. Erika, I am happy that my grateful comment reached you!
As for what Bluhare mentions here about Harry and Meg being affectionate now and in the future, I think it is a super interesting observation :D I do not think things will change that dramatically though. I think there is a good chance that they will stay "like this", as it might not be just "being smitten" but their way of behaviour, their natural interaction, their habit to be tactile. Or, if they eventually stop or slow down, I think there will be other ways of showing affection between them - shared caring for kid(s) etc. And of course they will be older so probably it won't look weird if they are not this tactile anymore. I wish for the first option though - being affectionate is natural and habit-like for them and they won't stop, lol. It is so cute.

I am not a fan of wearing different shades of the same color either. the skirt would have been ok with a black or white top to a different event. she does always have her great smile and she does seem to be really enjoying her new life so that is great to see.

  51. What an exhilerating and whirlwind tour! Very nice to see the heart-warming reception. I thought Meghan looked effortlessly elegant. The Armani coat is just exquisite in tailoring, fit, and fabrication! We used have what was known as 7/8 length coats (as opposed to full length and 3/4 length) and I think that is the effect of the coat Meghan was wearing today. There was just the perfect amount of skirt showing. Loved the hunter green skirt and green blouse, and that shade of green looks wonderful on her. Remember the green Givenchy separates in Ireland? I also liked the delicate gold jewellery (quite a lot for minimalist Meg!) and the contrasting chunky signet ring. Meghan seems to have carved out separates as part of her signature look, and they are easier to repeat with mixing and matching. I think when we start seeing repeats, that might be what we might all see. I really like how Meghan styles herself. I see a stylish, confident, and mature woman. Although Meghan is a stunning woman, there is also something of the "girl next door" look to her beauty, perhaps it's the freckles, and I think that's what's so charming about her, and makes her so friendly and approachable.

  66. I want to stand up for Harry for a moment. I have seen several comments expressing relief that Harry is not wearing navy blue. First, I think it is important to remember that over the last two years, Harry has begun to incorporate some other colors in his sport coat/suit wardrobes. Gray, in particular is a color he has worn often. As a fellow redhead, there are colors that we absolutely cannot wear, because they don't work with our hair color and our pale/ruddy skin complexion. Men with red hair are particularly boxed in on color options, because the vast array of colors available to women are not often available to men (especially in suits and sport coat ensembles). Navy blue happens to be a very complimentary color for redheads and we wear it well. For some of us, navy is better than black, because black often makes us seem even more pale in complexion than we are. Grays, greens, blues, dark purple (such as eggplant), and some deep browns are fairly good colors for redheads. It doesn't bother me that Harry is comfortable in navy blue, because I understand why and he looks handsome and sharp in that color, just as he does in grays and greens.

    1. No issues here with blue suits. :-) I, too, think it makes him look handsome and sharp. This gray suit looks good, but it makes me think "summer" while Meghan's outfit says "autumn".

  67. Anonymous @ 16:59. I agree, the Duke of Sussex looks handsome in blue. I’m aware of Ginger and color coordination. My comment was not meant to be critical just an observation; glad to see the Duke of Sussex wearing the gray colored suit.
