Royal Visit New Zealand Officially Begins!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex landed in New Zealand this afternoon for the final portion of their royal tour.

Kensington Palace noted the "programme will focus on youth leadership, and projects being undertaken by young people to address the social, economic, and environmental challenges of the region. The Duke and Duchess are particularly keen to highlight these youth-led initiatives in the Duke's new role as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador, and to shine a light on the work and aspirations of young people across the Commonwealth."

Harry and Meghan travelled with a number of the New Zealand Invictus Games competitors on a Royal New Zealand AirForce flight for Wellington.

The couple received a very warm greeting by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Ahead of the visit, she said: "The Duke and Duchess have a particular interest in youth, mental health and conservation, and they will have the opportunity to meet many New Zealanders working in those important areas, while also getting to enjoy some of our unique environment."

The Prime Minister gave birth to a baby girl in June named Neve Te Aroha. Neve is an anglicised form of the Irish name Niamh, meaning "bright"; Aroha is Māori for "love", and Te Aroha is a mountain in the Kaimai Range, near Ardern's home town of Morrinsville. She was delighted to receive warm wishes on the arrival from members of the royal family. "It’s certainly mind-blowing receiving messages from Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Queen, that’s certainly not something you expect".

From the airport, Harry and Meghan attended the traditional welcome ceremony on the lawns of Government House. They were invited to hongi with the Governor-General’s Kuia and Kaumātua (Māori elders), before the pōwhiri, which included a haka performed by members of the New Zealand Defence Force.

The ceremony also included a 21-gun salute, and was attended by school children.

Following the Pōwhiri, Harry participated in the Wero, an ancient warrior tradition of the Māori used to determine whether visitors have come in peace or with hostile intent.

They were welcomed by the Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy and Sir David.

Prince Harry inspected a military guard at Government House.

Harry and Meghan's next stop was the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park.

They laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, and visited the newly unveiled UK War Memorial.

Pukeahu National War Memorial Park commemorates more than 300,000 New Zealanders who served their country and the 30,000 who died.

Pukeahu National War Memorial Park opened in time for Anzac Day 2015. It was the government’s key project to acknowledge the centenary of the First World War.

At almost five metres tall, the design of the UK memorial, takes the form of two of the United Kingdom and New Zealand’s most iconic trees. The trunks of a Royal Oak and a Pōhutakawa intertwine to form one single leafy canopy, where leaves from both trees merge to create sense of shelter - giving the memorial its name: Whakaruruhau. Standing at the plaque, between the branches a silhouette of a single soldier can be seen, representing the union of two countries who stood side by side and those millions who served in times of conflict, resolution and peace.

The Duke and Duchess view the memorial.

Harry was presented with the Badge in Gold, New Zealand’s highest honour given in recognition of his work with injured veterans, by RSA national president B.J. Clark. Meghan pinned it on her husband.

A video from the event.

A crowd of thousands gathered for walkabout.

I enjoyed this video, listening to several locals chatting about the visit.

A sea of signs awaited the Duke and Duchess.

Reporters on the scene described the atmosphere as "unbelievable" and "electric".

Harry and Meghan were delighted to meet local children.

I've noticed how excited girls and women are to meet Meghan in particular. Her views on empowerment resonate deeply with young women, something that's often mentioned to her when she meets them.

Hannah Furness shared a very sweet story from the walkabout: "Major brownie points for the mum who "got blunt" to get a picture with Sophie and Hope, both 10. "I just asked 'can I get a photo, can I get a photo?' and Harry said 'Yeah, sure!'"We've been here since 8 o'clock. There was a contemplation about staying overnight just for fun."

Sophie Walsh shared scenes from the walkabout.

More from Emily Andrews.

The Queen has made ten visits to New Zealand - the first of these came during Her Commonwealth Tour in 1953/1954. A reader noted Princess Diana's father, John Spencer is in the photo. He served as an equerry to the Queen from 1952-1954.

Today, the Sussexes began their own relationship with the country.

The Duchess sported the Banks trench by New Zealand designer Karen Walker. The £430 piece is described as: "A tailored coat with glam-meets-utility detail is a Karen Walker signature. Cut in a mid-weight plaid suiting, the Banks Trench features a traditional double-breasted front, exaggerated lapel and storm flap, co-ordinating button fastenings, and deep front pockets."

The Duchess debuted her first maternity style of the tour. Meghan arrived wearing the $56 ASOS Maternity Wiggle Mini Dress (with thanks to UFO No More). The boat neck LBD features a high-rise empire line. The non maternity version is available here.

The Wiggle dress is available in a variety of colours and lengths.

Meghan wore her trusty Sarah Flint Jay pumps.

And accessorised with her Birks Muse Citrine and Diamond drop earrings.

Tonight, the Duke and Duchess will attend a reception hosted by the Governor General celebrating the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand.

  1. Love this coat!!! She looks wonderful.

Found this link to the article referred to about H/M leaving KP office. I guess it makes sense but it seems a little sad that the boys are all grown up. :)

I don't know what it means about Charles considering H/M to be part of the core yet not wanting to pay for two households. As someone who is in the US, and therefore it's not my business, I would like to see Charles become King while the Queen is still alive. I have gotten really attached to her and now can't bear to lose her! I don't know what Charles taking the throne would mean for his siblings, though. I think the UK thinks that Anne and Sophie are worth supporting.

    1. I would like to understand the meaning of two separate courts or I assume business offices if we are talking 2018 and not the year of the Reformation. I am assuming this is for daily activity/schedules/calendars. I do understand that both young royals do have separate teams now. Is this just referencing actual working space. It is interesting since all four work under the same foundation umbrella with the exception of the Invictus Games. Ultimately, other then their joint interest in mental heath (which is the most admirable cause to bring attention to) do they not at all times represent HM? If that is the case, why would they separate unless it is just space we are referencing. Question then is where exactly would H&M office be? I apologize for my ignorance but if I am understand this reference correctly it all seems very unnecessary. I welcome clarity please.

US Granny, you are correct when you talk about business offices, although Business Teams might be even more accurate since it is possible that both courts/households could be located at KP.
As time goes by W&K will take up more engagements representing HM while H&M will have a bit more freedom.
For example this tour was arranged by the same team that arrange all W&K’s tours (with the addition of Harry’s private secretary etc) which made sense because they have experience in how to arrange tours. But with 4 full time royals and new babies and multiple tours in the future the same team won’t be able to handle everything.
My guess is they are currently investigating the different possibilities from a practical and financial point of view. Splitting the offices might be practical and a good move going forward but it could also lead to a lot of wastage due to doubling up of services and miscommunications, which are things they definitely want to avoid.
Alternatively they could just enlarge the KP team. Lots of options to consider.

    3. HYSTERICAL. I love USA Granny's line: "I would like to understand the meaning of two separate courts or I assume business offices if we are talking 2018 and not the year of the Reformation." On the money!!

    4. Personally, I think that Harry and Meghan want to (and have a potential to) have a bigger outreach, a bigger impact than they can be provided from KP. The KP platform is not big enough for both couples, plus, H&M can be more active, free and involved with their own platform. I am devastated by the split (or will be; when it comes) but I totally understand, just look at some instagram posts from the tour - caption written by H&M, picture taken by Meghan...this personal and less formal approach can only be developed on H&M's personal site, because W&K's position in the RF simply (IMO) doesn't allow this...

  2. Well her coat is Karen Walker. I love it. Very stylist.

  3. That is a marvelous coat! What a good idea to button and tie the coat in all of that wind. Classic feminine struggle, hold the hair or hold the skirt, or the coat. I wonder if the little black maternity dress was ordered in and added to the wardrobe yesterday.

  4. This look is most definitely a miss for me. The coat seems too busy with all the pocket flaps, belt, lapel, and chest piece as well as the check pattern. Love her shoes though.

  5. And she's wearing a maternity dress. I think she's just so happy!!

    1. I'm so happy to see she's wearing a maternity dress! It's only sensible; wearing clothing designed for her expanding waistline will make her feel more comfortable, as well as looking better in terms of not being oddly tight and loose in various places. Plus it's her first pregnancy, so it's probably great fun for her, too!

  7. Beautiful combination of coat and dress. I like that she chose a New Zealand designer, and that is a lovely coat.

  8. Meghan’s recent wardrobe seems much more appropriate for the environment, the culture, and her changing physique. I can’t help wondering whether adjustments have been made, in other words whether different outfits have been acquired after it became obvious that those she started with were no longer working. She has had comfortable and relatively colorful things to wear for several days, many of them from Australian companies. Maybe, once her pregnancy was known and her waist expanding it was no longer necessary to maintain tight secrecy. Did her staff then go shopping? ;-)

Bit sad that the news items are so appallingly filmed. They obviously forgot to switch off the camera when moving the camera quickly to another spot. At least it didn't rain!

  13. Question...Do we think that maternity dress was packed all along or a recent purchase while traveling? It is a very cute LBD.

    1. I believe so, too. It’s almost a repeat of Kate when she landed in Wellington whilst holding George. Meghan did well here not to expose anything!

  15. Too much going on with the coat for me, especially the chest flaps and big collar. It’s a lot of busy. It works with the plain dress and shoes though. I would have liked to see the packing and planning for this trip. Was the black dress sent out after they left?
The young royals splitting their offices makes sense now. One pair are monarchs in training, the other will have a different role. More freedom, too.

  21. I’m really enjoying the Trench coat. Charlotte, this is another engagement packed day and you have got it all covered. Thank you so much for the videos and the history surrounding the UK memorial. Sooo much interesting info. Nice to see a large crowd giving support. Again, thanks to all the men and women who serve so courageously in the armed forces on behalf of their country. I greatly respect the memorial services/laying the wreath/unknown soldier. A history filled post and I have enjoyed it. I read the Duchess got ‘cold’ on this trip to Wellington and read about Princess Diana’s father.
