'I'm So Proud Of You': Meghan Makes Surprise Visit to Hubb Community Kitchen

The Duchess of Sussex made an unannounced visit to the Hubb Community Kitchen this morning to see how the funds raised by Together: Our Community Cookbook are already making a difference.

Last summer, a group of women gathered in a communal kitchen at the Al Manaar community centre in West London, where they could prepare fresh food for their families, friends and neighbours. As they cooked together and shared recipes, as a community they began to connect, heal and look forward. Word spread and more women joined in - this was the start of the Hubb Community Kitchen.

During the launch event in September, Meghan described the project as "a labour of love". Over months of private visits and conversations, the Duchess forged a bond with the women of the Hubb. Struck by their courage, kindness and determination to rebuild their community following the horrific Grenfell Fire, Meghan knew her first solo project would involve supporting the Hubb. Earlier this month Russell Myers reported: "Meghan has struck up a “deep and personal friendship” with several women during secret visits to Hubb Community Kitchen, which helps families left destitute by the blaze. And she now “sees it as her personal duty to help the survivors” – and will help them for “as long as it takes”. A palace source said: “The Duchess has made regular private visits to the kitchen and to the women of Hubb and will continue to do so."

The Duchess was warmly greeted by Hubb Community Kitchen co-coordinator Zahira Sufyaan. Zahira was one of the first people Meghan discussed the possibility of the cookbook with. Today provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate the success of the book and the journey thus far.

The visit coincided with the delightful news Together has sold 40,000 copies in seven weeks in the UK alone and raised £210,000 for the Hubb kitchen. The book reached number one on Amazon.co.uk book chart within hours of being announced, and has appeared in the Sunday Times and New York Times Bestseller lists, selling tens of thousands of copies since its release.

Kensington Palace added: "Since the book was published in September, the inclusive ethos of Together has resonated all over the world, and inspired people not just to buy the book, but to cook, eat and gather in their own communities."

Thanks to the proceeds from Together, which was published in September, the Hubb Community Kitchen has been completely redesigned and re-fitted, with the women’s input, to capture the joyful spirit of the Hubb Community Kitchen as a place to bring the community together over food. The new facilities provide a safe and professional space for the women to cook, gather and run activities within their community. Take a look at the before...

...And after.

Previously the kitchen was only able to open two days a week due to funding. The women are now able to use the kitchen seven days a week, and have been upskilled to gain food hygiene qualifications and empowered to start their own projects, which will help others in their community benefit from the kitchen.

A very warm welcome for Meghan.

Meghan helped prepare lunch.

As always, the ladies enjoyed chatting and sharing stories whilst preparing food.

More from the Mail Online:

'The Duchess of Sussex told cooks at a community kitchen of her pride in their work, as they lovingly told her that her baby will be considered their “grandchild”.
Ahlam Saeid, whose family recipe of rainbow roasted vegetables Meghan helped prepare at the kitchen, told of her of her joy. After meeting Meghan the 61-year-old grandmother, who is originally from Iraq, said: “I told her this is our grandchild, we are so happy. The whole community. And she is so happy.”
Meghan was also given a traditional Ugandan cloth to wrap around her stomach in the months after she gives birth. Munira Mahmud said she explained briefly to Meghan what the navy blue fabric was before she left the kitchen. She said: “Much of what we are doing is based on tradition. I thought what could be better to get her than the wrap. She was over the moon, she was really happy.”
The mother-of-two, 34, is one of the women motivated by the growing kitchen project to start up a new scheme, providing new mothers with healthy, fresh and nutritious meals. She said: “I told her ‘I can’t wait to cook for you after you have the baby’. One of my projects is cooking good food for mothers after they have their babies. She added that Meghan said she would be happy to enjoy her meals.'

The Duchess joined the group in the kitchen and learned about some of the planned new outreach projects, which will be funded by proceeds from Together.

Supported and mentored by UnLtd, the foundation for social entrepreneurs, the women are now embarking on their own projects including a group for women affected by domestic violence, a scheme to deliver nutritious, freshly cooked meals for women on maternity wards, and a project to produce healthy treats for children.

Then it was time to relax.

Meghan also heard about the women’s long-term vision for the Hubb Community Kitchen, and how they hope to use future proceeds to reach out to more people in their community.

The Mail Online reports Meghan introduced the women to Clare Smyth.

'Meghan, who has been making private visits to the kitchen since January, quickly abandoned any formality when she got inside. She threw her arms around each of the women and kissed them, chattering excitedly about what they had been up to since she last saw them. 'Hi, how are you? Wow, it's so quiet in here,' she said, giggling.
She also introduced chef Clare Smyth, a friend of hers, to the volunteers in the kitchen. Smiling, Meghan said: 'I'm so proud of you. It's really exciting. 'The people involved in the kitchen are 'incredible', said Ms Smyth, who visited the kitchen for the first time with Meghan.
The Co Antrim-born chef, who now lives in London and has a restaurant near the community facility, said: 'If everyone took care of their community like this there would be no issues in the world.' Ms Smith said Meghan had spoken with passion about the kitchen. 'She's really into food, she's a real foodie.'

Clare Smyth created the menu for Harry and Meghan's wedding reception.

The Hubb now prepares 200 meals in just one day, to be delivered to local groups, including elderly people’s homes, homeless shelters and women’s refuges.

Meghan told the group: "It starts from one idea and from this one idea starts so much. I’m so proud of you."

More from Harper's Bazzaar:

'Working on the project has been a labour of love for Meghan. Recalling the first time the women at Hubb met the Duchess, Alsaiegh, 62, says, “All the women had been busy working and cutting [the food], but she came and gave kisses to all of us and hugs to all of us. Everyone, whatever they had in their pocket or the rings they were wearing, they wanted to give it to her because they immediately felt the warmth.”
In addition to the success of the book, there was one more cause for celebration during the Duchess’ visit today—her forthcoming baby with Prince Harry. The news wasn’t a complete surprise to everyone, though.
Alsaiegh tells BAZAAR, “Whenever she would visit she hugged all the kids and always put the kids in her lap and sit down to hug them. She said, ‘I love kids,’ and I told her, ‘[Because of] what you did for us, Allah is going to give you the baby.’ Then my children called me [last month] like, ‘Mama, congratulations!’ and I said 'What?’ and they said ‘Meghan is pregnant!’
“We are so happy for her," Alsaiegh added. "A good heart is going to be a good mum. She loves Harry very much.”
While it’s not unusual for members of the royal family to lend their time to charitable causes, the amount of time Meghan gives to the Hubb Kitchen has bowled over many at the community center, with regular private visits and countless hours spent behind the scenes ahead of the book’s September launch.
“She has a good heart and the people here need this,” says Alsaiegh. “All the times she said she will come, she has. She said she’s going away for her wedding and visit[s] after one week. She came before she went [on tour]. She said, ‘I’m going to go for a long journey to New Zealand and Fiji, and then after that I’m going to come and we’re going to celebrate.”

Meghan stayed 20 minutes longer than scheduled at the event. More from Richard Palmer.

The Duchess looked terrific in a burgundy outfit by Club Monaco. The warm shade of the coat and dress had a very festive feel to it - a perfect choice with Christmas just around the corner. Club Monaco is one of Meghan's favourite retailers, she chooses their pieces for an array of events including Christmas morning at Sandringham last year, the van Straubenzee wedding in August and most recently the royal tour down under.

The Duchess sported the burgundy Daylina Coat (with thanks to Laura). The straight fit coat features a notch lapel; double-button closure; welt pockets at the hip; single back vent and center back seam. It's described as: "A timeless piece for this season and each one to come. Made for polish and warmth." The coat is on sale in several colours reduced from $459 to $349.

Heaven identified Meghan's dress as the Club Monaco Sallyet style. The $228 burgundy dress is an ideal piece for the holiday season. It features a soft velvet collar and double-button cuffs. To mark Black Friday, Club Monaco are offering 25% off orders exceeding $150 with discount code CMBLACKFRIDAY2018

Meghan teamed the look with a pair of Givenchy Ankle Boots.

The slip on ankle boots feature a pointed toe, branded insole, rear pull tab and high heel.

Meghan accessorised with a 'Love' ring. Hubb means love in Arabic. It turns out Meghan's ring is by British jeweller Solange.

A closer look at Meghan's delicate Birks Gold Bar earrings and ponytail.

It was a 'Double Duchess' day in many ways; both ladies had unannounced engagements and wore burgundy outfits and ponytails. A number of people have commented on the possibility they coordinated given the recent spate of headlines about their relationship. It certainly does seem like more than a coincidence. They both looked splendid in the festive shade. Read about Kate's engagement on Duchess Kate.

It's absolutely fantastic to see the success of Together and the ripple effect one project can have on a community. The women of Hubb are delivering meals to several groups and this is just the beginning. I'm incredibly excited to see what the future holds, I have no doubt Meghan will be with them every step of the way. For those considering Christmas gifts, I cannot recommend Together enough. It's become a firm favourite in my house. It's packed with delicious recipes you will make time and time again. Proceeds will help the women of Hubb continue continue their amazing work and develop new projects. It's available at Amazon UK, Amazon US, The Book Depository (Free International Shipping) and Barnes and Noble.

A very Happy Thanksgiving to all those celebrating tomorrow.

    4. My thanks for the feedback on the cookbook. I am buying myself a copy. I learned a long time ago, if I can get even one great recipe out of a book, the cost of the cookbook is well worth the dollars spent. Nothing better than a discovered recipe becoming a rotation favorite. Even better to have the proceeds go to a worthy organization.

    6. Oh, yes, I have the cookbook. I really like supporting small projects that have a large local impact, and this is a great example of that. Very pleased Meghan is taking this approach with her projects. From small acorns, large oaks grow!

OK, done being cheesy for today. Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate.

  16. Thank you, Charlotte. What a welcomed surprise to see the Duchess of Sussex again, so soon. The Duchess and her mother would do “soup kitchens” in Los Angeles, this passion is clearly in her humanitarian DNA. She looks so happy. Definitely, she is in her element. The Cookbook is so wonderful and the monies raised have already made a difference (the kitchen renovated, the staff receiving training and open 7 days a week). I’m so happy for the Women of the Hubb Community who have been empowered to help themselves. In a more upscaled way, these wonderful Women have extended food services to even more families. I think the Duchess of Sussex is appropriately dressed. I like the color also. Her humanitarian work, now and through the years, in my opinion, always outshines her fashion. Thanks again, Charlotte and may the Duchess of Sussex continue to HELP people to HELP themselves.

  19. It’s the day before the Thanksgiving holiday here in the US. I would like to think that it’s part of the reason Meghan is paying a visit to Hubb. It is apt during this American holiday to do this while continuing to support the women who help nourish the homeless, refugees, elderly and the nearby community at large. And on top of all that, she looks really happy to be there and appears to have a genuine connection with the women she has come to know.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think they are making Thanksgiving foods! You can see the yams and potatoes. (Even though I know most Brits don't celebrate Thanksgiving).

  21. Our American spirit of Thanksgiving was on full display this morning in Meghan's surprise visit to the Hub Community Kitchen. I woke to CBS Morning News running both the original and current clip of Meghan's visit. What a delightful wake up call! She looks to be in tip top shape and style from head to toe. The fall color chosen are so on target in the USA and this time of year with the changing of the seasons. I especially love her booties and the flair to her dress as she continues her beautiful fashion choices into her pregnancy. Her radiant smile and genuine greeting to the ladies of the Hub Kitchen continues to show us the long term commitment Meghan has made to both these women and the community at large. In my opinion this is what a signature project is all about, a continued presence knowing some work is never complete but renewed as time goes on. To all who celebrate Thanksgiving I wish you the very best of time spent with loved ones be they family or friends. Charlotte, and to you I say thank you for introducing me to places I will never visit and opinions that have widened my prospective and reminded me that we are all free to express ourselves. How lucky are we.

  35. Thank you Charlotte for the post. What a wonderful success the project has been. I have the book and have enjoyed it very much having read it all the way through. Enjoyed each woman’s story and the recipies are not too complicated, achievable by anyone cook or not, and provides a cross section of foods across cultures. What a healing process this journey has been for the women involved. There is now friendship and integration and sense of belonging in a new country whereas before there was isolation and highrise loneliness. We talk a lot about charity on this blog and my hooe would be that each one of us buys a cooy of the book - our contribution to women supporting women in adversity and maybe some of us will be surprised at the ripple effect in our own lives wherever we live in the world. My regards to Charlotte and all the blog readers.

Nothing pretentious, just a lucky woman helping others, sharing her efforts and totally enjoying every moment. Harry is truly a lucky man.

This book did so well, in my opinion, because it is coming from the hearts of women trying to help their families and communities. Certainly without Megan it wouldn’t have sold as much, but just her name alone would have not been enough. It is the combination that made it such a wonderful book that gives one more than just recepes. Gives such nice stories.

Her sartorial choices today are absolutely perfect. Nothing else needs to be said.

  38. Love that she's back at the kitchen. I imagine she told her husband that she's going to see "her ladies" today. They seem to have a genuine friendship and enjoy one another. They may not have seen her since her pregnancy announcement so I'm sure there were well wishes all around. Not to focus on her looks but ... She looks fabulous! Love that she's wearing a maternity-type dress that is flattering at this awkward beginning stage she's in and the shoes, tights and whole look is cozy yet warm and stylish. I'd like this look for myself. I also wonder if she coordinated with the other Duchess who made a similar surprise visit to another location with burgundy mini skirts. Maybe thwarting the naysayers about the mini being too mini:). I also think there must be an increase in security concerns with all these unannounced visits recently. It's fun for us to get surprise sightings in these cases and glad they stay safe in this crazy world. They are doing fantastic jobs!

  41. What a wonderful morning surprise to wake up to on the west coast of the US! My cookbook just arrived. I haven’t made any recipes yet, but looking forward to trying during the holiday season. Meghan looks lovely in the burgundy jewel tones. I agree with previous comments that she likely has her traditions of Thanksgiving and Soup Kitchens in mind and this is a wonderful way to carry those traditions on in a new way in the UK with her role as Duchess. She seems so warm and at ease with all the Hubb ladies. I also think it’s a nice reminder after all the strange press recently claiming tiara gate and too much Hollywood style. I believe the Daily Mail even claimed that she was driving staff crazy with her 5am texts and complaining about her work ethic. Which is interesting when the same paper would criticize Kate as lazy. It seems like one can never win when in the public eye. I’m glad Meghan made this surprise appearance and reminded everyone about a sense of community and giving back through charities such as this. And that the holiday season can bring everyone together through food. I really have become quite inspired by Meghan. She is charming, smart, warm, fashionable, kind and brings her own modern style to the job. I think she is a breath of fresh air.

  47. I agree with so many posters today: I agree Libby @16:22 re the “ripple effect” of a good idea; I agree Anonymous @16:27 which is why the title of the book is so appropriate, “TOGETHER- Our Community Cookbook”. It was the Duchess of Sussex’s idea and she did the logistical groundwork but it took the ‘community’ of ladies to bring the idea into reality. Isabella at 16:59, you maybe right about the increased security concerns. That certainly would explain why both Duchesses have unannounced engagements but both engagements have invited press / cameras on site. I agree, both Duchesses really have shown a lot of devotion and commitment to the causes that interest them. Nice fashion styles and similar colors for them today. The Duchess of Sussex really did ‘hit the ground running” having only been a Royal for what, 6 months. Thanks, Charlotte.

    ReplyDelete
  48. What a nice way to start my day!! These type of engagements are ones that I've longed for the younger royals to undertake, true involvement and almost immediate results. This project of Meghan's really reminds me of various endeavors Charles' has done in him many years as PoW. I'm thrilled at the results so far, the new kitchen and dining area look lovely. I have a feeling that this will be one of Meghan's patronages, when they're finally announced.

On to fashion...what a great outfit today!! The color, fit and style of both the dress and coat are quite perfect. And these booties just make this outfit! They are so fun and a little quirky, I want a pair very badly!! :)

In the spirit of Thanksgiving I want to send a big Thank You to Charlotte for all the hard work, time and effort you put into this site! I can't imagine all the hours of research you put in, but please know that it's very much appreciated.

    1. Agree with so many of the above comments...a winwinWIN (the continued commitment to the Hubb, the fashion and the nod to the press)! I would also love a pair of these booties albeit in a slightly lower heel and of course a knockoff since Givenchy is not in my budget. Love her lipstick color. My only desired addition to the dress would be some velvet banding on the sleeves to pick up the collar detail.Wonderful engagement as was that of DoC.

      Delete
    2. Just curious then, do you think the other royals aren’t involved in their projects? If so, is it because there are no immediate results, like a quantity of some sort, to measure success against? I’m just interested in this line of thought, not trying to be argumentative.

      Delete
    3. Anon23---Your question reflects my recent realization that there are many royals making visits and promoting projects every day---Edward, Sophia, Anne, and so on and so on. I can't speak for anyone else, bit care only about Meghan and Kate. Meghan, because she was a fully fascinating person before she married Harry. Kate, because she was billed as a "commoner" who seemed to shake things up a bit, before Meghan. The York girls seem very nice, particularly Eugenie, but I don't follow them.

      Delete
    4. Hi Anon23, yes, is some ways the younger royals aren't very involved in their assorted charities. At the moment, they seem most interested in mental health issues to the exclusion of their other charities. But my particular thought was how perhaps a party could be hosted for children of the military (surprise, just such the thing was announced today) or perhaps art supplies could be brought to a hospital and some time spent coloring with the kiddies. Personally, I'd like to see some imagination in some of their royal work. For years now it seems to be that they show up, shake hands, accept a bunch of flowers, learn a bit and then leave after 45 minutes. There is much talk about the younger royals "modernizing" the Firm but for the most part they all stick to the usual type of engagements that the Queen's been doing for 50+ years, not very "modern" imho.

I do understand that they're all in it for the long run and not all of their projects will yield immediate results like these cookbook but as I said above hosting a party or doing a one-off engagement that could yield immediate or near immediate results wouldn't hurt either.

  50. What a wonderful engagement - truly a celebration of people helping each other. I am not one to buy many cookbooks, i’ve Gotten into the habit of getting my recipes off the internet - but I will be ordering this. Meghan looks fantastic - love her outfit and her beautiful smile that lights up her face. She looks like someone that we would all like to hang out with... Darling fall outfit, and those boots really elevate the outfit. I have commented before as to how Meghan treats the media with respect and much more warmth than most, if not all, of the other senior Royals... Note Richard Palmers tweet re. Meghan saying “goodbye, guys, and thanks for coming”... Just that small comment makes a huge difference.... I am so hoping that Harry adopts a warmer attitude as well. The Royals need the media and visa versa...

    3. I'm glad you brought the gratitude expressed to the media Anon 20:58. If you hadn't I was going to. I'm happy to add my comment to Lauri's. There's been some talk that Meghan has helped Harry to reconcile is relationship with his father and appreciate him more. Perhaps we are seeing something similar with the media--gradual, incremental steps toward healing.

Harry has spoken with deep (and righteous) bitterness about the paps in the Paris tunnel who continued to exploit his mother instead of coming to her assistance. Understandably, that wound would be hard for anyone to heal; however, it is important that the royals not be estranged from the media.

I have read some push back on another blog that princesses do not turn to the camera, that it is the mark of celebrities to do so. That it reflects Meghan's less than desirable Hollywood and American traits, and hopes have been expressed that over time she will not do so.

Nowadays, I believe that princesses are celebrities whether they wish to be or not. Social media has created that phenomenon. In the past they stayed in their remote towers and rarely came out in the public in any effective way. They often didn't know how to interact with "the common" people and thought that being seen in royal finery was enough to cheer those who were suffering the aftermath of devastation.

The new generation of royals is not behaving as their antecedents did. They are using the new social media platforms, their skills sets, their gifts and their connected positions to affect change in concrete ways. Change that is rapid and effective and sorely needed in the communities being served. I think it quite a splendid transformation.

In time, I hope that respectful interactions between the royals and the media might be established to the benefit of each.

    4. I think it is important to differentiate between pap photographers and royal reporters. There were no paps in the kitchen today. They were press pack and royal photographers who no doubt have become familiar faces to Meghan as well as co-travelers on the recent tour. By the looks of the size of that area--not many would fit in. I imagine mostly just the main royal reporters, such as Richard Palmer were there. I won't discuss his out-spoken remarks about the Cambridges on his private social media account. Let's just say he has been a Meghan promoter from the beginning.

Harry and William have always made it clear that the complaint is with the paps who take hidden shots or photos in a manner that compromises security-especially that of their wives and children. I remember a particular incident during one of Harry and Meghan's engagement tour events. They object to photos taken during private moments without their knowledge or approval. There are many, many photos of William and/or Catherine smiling, waving or otherwise acknowledging the press pack. The waves from the Lindo Wing steps come to mind but there are others.
I don't mean to detract from Meghan's courting of the press--this was a part of her daily life for years. I do object to these constant comparisons that pit the two couples against each other. This William and Harry Hate the Media spiel needs to be laid to rest. It is an unfair representation of what was going on. Not all media and not all the time.

    5. I actually think not acknowledging the media is rude. The Queen always acknowledges the cameras with her signature sly smile. Charles and Camila acknowledge the camera and talk to reporters. It's mostly Kate and William who seem to have a real antipathy towards acknowledging the reporters. But unlike what many Daily Mail commentators and instagram commenters say, W/K =/= royalty. Their lack of relationship with the press is their own issue and they must sort it out as they will have to deal with them when they became King and Queen,

      Delete
    6. In all fairness, Harry did the same exact thing at the end of th tour as they were leaving the forest in New Zealand. He said “thanks guys it’s been fun”.

But it is also a two way street and the media must in turn treat the principles with the same courtesy and respect that they expect.

    7. When I was studying journalism in college I was taught that a journalist who interjects themselves into a story, changes the story. There is no reason to become friendly with a subject other than to get preferential treatment or a “scoop” and no good reason for a subject to get friendly with a reporter other than to get preferential treatment in coverage. Professional press know this and want the best shots, the best quotes, the reputation for having news first. This is historically how it has always worked.

    8. I think that having been an actress, DoS had a chance to deal with the press in a much different way that DoC was able to learn. I also think some of DoC’s so called shyness is from security concerns. She may have been told by her security team to keep moving after she gets out of the car. Remember too, the DoC was burned early on in her marriage from tabloids with the a long lens incident , and again when Prince George was a toddler with decoy playmates.

I love her look today, burgundy is my favourite colour at the moment. I also love the ponytail.
I'm going to order the cookbook through Book depository - hopefully it arrives before Christmas.

  52. What a wonderful project. I think this project helped Meghan as much as it helped the women and the community. These women used their own talents to empower their community and hopefully their personal pursuits. I'm glad I have a copy of this book.

Fashionwise this is one of my favorite casual looks. I love the color and the boots. I can't help but think of how Kate wore the same color and hairstyle. I think it was a planned show of solidarity but also it ensures both women get attention for their projects equally. I also think it was a playful troll at the media rumors.

Since i would never have use for a coatdress, i like seeing coats to wear over jeans or dresses or skirts. Kate has her coat dress that is her signature which looks fabulous while Meghan has her signature.

  60. I was thinking about this project today and, as mentioned above, the ripple effect. These women have gone from helping each other to feeding groups of women in need. Zahira Sufyaan looks as warm and loving and intelligent as Meghan---I would love to have her as a friend, and I imagine she and MM are very happy in their friendship. This group can grow and do a lot of good in the years that follow; they appear to have a lot of talent among them. The publicity is invaluable, especially for the Muslim community. I've always thought that if you help one person in your life, that is a life worth living. To be able to help so many, and to do so in such a sincere way, is what makes Meghan smile so much. And I LOVE the story about her baby. That is so sweet, and I know the ladies are taking a bit of credit for it. :)

About "matching" Kate, that has to be something they talked about. I can almost go for them being close in their outfits/color, but for both to have ponytails is a real coincidence. I think it's another way to show us that, hey, there is no competition!!! Kate will be Queen, Meghan won't---life is great for both of them.

Aside from Meghan's outfit being perfect for the task, the weather, the baby---it's also something you wear to see friends.

  67. Here in Arizona my Mom and I are remembering our ancestors and their sacrifices that brought us to this currently peaceful place where there is plenty. As I prepared food today, my mother who just turned 86, started telling me the story of the process I was following to make cornbread stuffing. We call it dressing, but that may be confusing to some because it is not for salad. Mom and I don't do turkey anymore, too much bother and too much left over, but the dressing is still mandatory, and brings back fond memories. Turns out it is a blend of my granny's way of doing it and a dear friend who was about 15 years older than my mother. As far as I know, we've never written it down, it never turns out the same way twice because the amount of the herbs vary depending on the hand that is shaking them into the mix. So, as we discuss the 'Together' cookbook, I'm thinking of our American family recipe.

    1. I saw most of it, if you are referring to the ABC US program aired last evening. I notice the theatric "Princess Diaries" films are having another run.
I was disappointed. The format was more entertainment news show than serious documentary. Constant quick-flashing montages. I kept wanting to yell, "Hey, wait a minute."

The dialog-narration was sound-bite oriented. Not the in-depth study promised. There were numerous comparisons to Kate. I think it is a bit soon for a "documentary" on Meghan; if one is done it should be done thoughtfully and thoroughly. It was mostly a collection of images and stories that are well-worn by now. Nothing new that I could tell. Another patched together PR piece geared toward attracting ratings, in my opinion.

I'd like a non-royal reporter (did you know that even OK magazine has one?) and serious journalist to do an objective, real in-depth review of her past, present, and future. Where has she been and where is she going? And more talk than flashing picture montages. She deserves it.

Meanwhile, more exclusives via sources. They just keep coming. Harry and Meghan are mad at W&C and are picking up their toys and moving to Windsor Great Park instead of the rumored KP Apt.1 next to the Cambridges. Remember, just last week the news that the four would no longer all be represented by KP PR. I don't think it was clear who was leaving and where they were going. And also not clear if the change involved a physical move from NotCot or only an office reorganization.
The truth is--that move to Apt.1 KP was never officially verified, that I know. Some forums had renovation for them already in progress there. Now renovation is supposedly in progress at Frogmore Cottage, including a yoga studio. Rumor built on rumor. Leaks. This seems to be the trend for this couple. An initial "sources" exclusive, sometimes followed by an official announcement or some verification. I am not sure why this is done. I don't think William and Catherine use this method for releasing plans.
These days, I'll believe it when I see it. Whatever happened to the Pride and Prejudice estate in the Cotswolds? I thought that would be kind of cool. Link to Jane Austen. So close to Anne and Charles's homes. Then again, there were so many homes for the Sussexes being put forth I may have them all jumbled up.

I did have a thought that there may actually be other royals in the KP complex that have issues with the Sussexes. They may not feel entirely at home there.

    2. Hi anon, I too watched the Meghan "documentary" last night and like you I wanted to yell "hey, wait a minute"! A similar 'documentary" was aired 6 months after W&K married and it to was filled with lots of fluff and the de rigeour 10 minutes about Diana. I don't mean to offend but why can't there be any type of "documentary" about any of the royals without the 10 minute segment of Diana? I especially feel bad for Kate and Meghan, it must be difficult enough to assimilate into the Firm without all the extra baggage of comparisons, good or bad, to their late mother-in-law. Lastly, I agree that Meghan deserves much more than the photo montage we saw. BH (before Harry) she built a life that anyone would be proud to have, a life filled with work that supported her and service to others that sustained her.

    3. Thanks for taking the time to reply, Lauri. I have a rather active imagination and I am not always sure I am seeing what I think I am seeing--so it was great to have your feed back.
Diana's place in history is similar to JFK's in that the passing years only serve to enhance their image. They were so young. If they had lived--who knows? JFK could have run for reelection in '64, lost, and been consigned to the speaker's circuit. Diana could have married Dodi or gone to Hollywood and appeared in that film Kevin Costner spoke about and lost custody of her boys.

Instead they are idolized, making it very difficult for their descendants to follow. Their lives are on permanent pause. The younger Kennedy generation have tried. Meghan and Catherine have to walk the line between emulation and simply honoring Diana's memory.
It may be that, within the immediate family, Diana is seen more realistically. But I agree: Diana--a tough act to follow.

  73. Agree with you, Anon15, now that the move to Frogmore seems to be a reality. They are not junior versions of Will and Kate, and the move seems like a wonderful opportunity. Amazing estate. It is so annoying that the press pretends there is animosity involve din the move---Will and Harry are on the road to being 40 years old, and I'm sure their love for each other will never fade. I'm excited that this now appears to be true -- and plenty of room for Doria. My vision is that she moves to the UK and establishes some charitable interests.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Is it a Frogmore house then?

    ReplyDelete
  75. The fact that the offices of the four will remain as one indicates to me that this was not prompted by "tension" between or among the young royals. I think this move is the basis of the initial "split" rumor that was expounded on in the press as a separation of offices and an indication of trouble. The funny thing is...it had been presented as a separation in houses and some took houses to mean "courts." Sometimes a house is just a house. :)
There was a leak or someone jumped the gun and revealed the Frogmore information that may have been distributed to royal reporters on a hold basis, which forced KP to officially announce. When does KP release a major announcement on a Saturday? As far as I can recall--rarely.

The tension slant may just have been royal reporter/tabloid hype to get people's attention. Where a royal plans to live may not interest some potential readers. A feud in the royal family usually does . What intrigues me is the proximity of their new residence to what has become HM's primary residence. Will proximity encourage the development of a Sophie-like closeness between the Queen and Meghan?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Well, the move to Frogmore Cottage is real, even the palace announced it. Even though it may just be a natural wish to establish their own home, it’s adding to the “feud” claims, unfortunately. Interesting that the press release said that their office will still be based at KP.

  77. It will be healthier for their family dynamics if they have their own space. They already spend so much time together working, family gatherings etc that truly separation is a good thing with their living quarters. I do not think they are moving due to any current issues but just wise planning for the future years.
