The Duchess in Shimmering Roland Mouret Gown for Sentebale Night at Cirque du Soleil

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s Totem in support of Sentebale at the Royal Albert Hall.

I wasn't entirely sure whether we would see a cocktail dress or more formal attire for the evening. To the delight of fashion fans, Meghan arrived in a shimmering gown. It's been a busy week for the Duchess; on Monday she and Harry carried out a packed day in Birkenhead and earlier today she made her first official visit to patronage Mayhew.

The couple were welcomed upon arrival.

The evening marks the second event in a series of ‘Sentebale Nights’, building on the success of the charity’s first production; a partnership with global sensation Hamilton, which was attended by both the Duke and Duchess.

When we consider the impact royals can have, it very much comes down to awareness and fundraising. These nights combined with other fundraising events such as polo matches enable charities to exponentially expand their work and profile.

Prince Harry founded Sentebale with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006 following Harry's gap year to Lesotho two years previously. The charity supports the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana. Sentebale’s programmes of education and care provide the tools and knowledge this vulnerable generation need to live long, happy, healthy lives.

Last October, Sentebale expanded their reach to Malawi, launching Mawa Girls. The programme responds to the great need of vulnerable secondary school girls and young women, who are at higher risk of new HIV infections, by providing psycho-social support to keep girls in school, empowered with vital sexual reproductive health education. HIV disproportionately affects women and adolescent girls because of vulnerabilities created by unequal cultural, social and economic status.

Johnny Hornby, Chairman of Sentebale, said: “At Sentebale, a large part of our educational work with children and adolescents has focused around engaging them through play, entertainment and music. We’re very grateful to everyone at Cirque du Soleil, for giving us the opportunity to shine a light on the work that Sentebale does to help children and young adults affected by HIV to live happy, healthy and productive lives.”

Before the event began, Sentebale tweeted: "People often ask why nights like tonight matter. Here's a glimpse into why..."

Cirque du Soleil has long been committed to using their profile for the greater good. Daniel Lamarre, Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group’s CEO, said:

“Since our very beginnings, we have always been determined to engage responsibly in the communities that we visit throughout the world. We strive to make a difference in the lives of youths and encourage them to change the world. It is because both our organizations share these very values that we will proudly dedicate our TOTEM premiere to the ‘Sentebale Nights’, a perfect way to allow us to raise significant funds and awareness together”.

The Duke and Duchess met representatives from Sentebale and Cirque du Soleil.

Well known faces included national treasure David Jason (better know to many of us as Del Boy).

The Duke and Duchess arrived to an ovation from the audience.

The couple held hands as they enjoyed the show.

Cirque Du Soleil's TOTEM is described as "a journey into the evolution of mankind". TOTEM follows the human species from original amphibian state to ultimate desire to fly. The characters evolve on a stage, evoking a giant turtle, the symbol of origin for many ancient civilizations.

Highlights include the Fixed Trapeze Duo. "Like two lovebirds, a young man and woman tease, play and sulk in an innocent game of seduction and eventually intertwine their bodies in a light-hearted vertical dance of fresh, unusual movements and lifts."

As the drum keeps time, a young Amerindian dancer evokes myths, legends and the everlasting circle of life.

Wearing colourful costumes inspired in part by the lost civilizations of South America, Acrobats leap from one bar to the next with astonishing agility.

A peek inside tonight's premiere.

After the show, Meghan chatted backstage about cold Canadian weather, returning there, and how much Sentebale means to Harry.

A video recap of the night.

The Duchess looked stunning in the sparkling Roland Mouret Sarandon gown. Several years ago Meghan was in an elevator in Istanbul and in walks none other than Mr Mouret. He smiled and said "I'd love to dress you". And a friendship was born. The designer is truly a master at his craft creating beautifully feminine silhouettes and designs. This entire look is a smash-hit, the gown is the star of the night. Striking jewellery and a statement lip add a glamorous finish.

The Sarandon gown is from the Resort 2019 collection. It's described as: "The sparkling Sarandon gown encapsulates demure decadence. This high-octane number is covered in light-catching navy sequins, and shaped elegantly with a boat neck that leads to a ruched waist and wrap-style skirt with cascading flutes and floor-pooling hem." It retails for £3,495 at Roland Mouret and My Theresa.

Susan from What Meghan Wore correctly noted the Duchess wore her Stuart Weitzman NudistSong Ankle Strap Sandals. She debuted them during the tour. They are available in several colours at Nordstrom.

Meghan carried her black Givenchy clutch.

Meghan wore Diana's gold bracelet with blue stones.

Below, the Duchess wearing the elegant piece in Sydney during the tour.

A closer look at Meghan's flawless beauty look. Meghan's Fashion suggests her earrings are a sold out Pippa Small style.

  15. She looks great. Love the stronger lip color and the gown looks very nice on her. I’m a bit over the nudist sandals on everyone, but it’s a minor quibble.

  16. I haven't been on board with people who were predicting twins earlier in Meghan's pregnancy, but the photos from today really make me (as a twin mum myself) wonder! If she isn't due until the spring, that is a decent-sized bump, definitely equivalent to how big mine was at that stage! If it is twins then she is an absolute warrior for being so active and busy - what a legend! And if it isn't twins, she is carrying her one big baby beautifully!

    1. It makes one wonder! I assume that if they were having tins, they would be smart enough to not tell the public. :)

      Delete
    2. Considering her age, if she needed IVF help getting pregnant then twins is a possibility. 🤔

      Delete
    3. I think it will be most likely twins.

      Delete
    4. I doubt it was with IVF...Likely it would have taken longer than two months and also with women like Meghan (very fit and healthy), you have to subtract a few years from their chronological age. So although the calendar says she is 37, her body is probably more like a 32 or 33 year-old.

      Delete
    5. Allison, I am wondering why you think “they would be smart enough not to tell the public”?
I would think it would be a very bad move to keep on talking about the “baby” when they know it is twins.
If they omit a detail like this no statement from their office would ever be believable again. Not saying its not possible but I hope they will have more sense than that.

When Princess Charlene of Monaco expected twins, the palace went to extremes to never refer to the ‘baby’ until they announced that was infact expecting twins, at around 6-7 months.

  17. My sister has a theory that when pregnant women are having a girl, their lips get fuller. She thinks Meghan's lips look fuller, and predicts a girl. I'm not so sure about that, but I do think her lips look fuller lately, especially in the fourth photo down from the top.

Meghan looks so glamorous tonight and I too enjoy seeing she and Harry interact.

  18. I think Meghan looked beautiful. Healthy, happy but maybe a little tired after a busy week thus far. The outfits she wore were lovely and stylish, but I don't know why she continues to select outfits that are not properly fitted. I get that younger women today want a slimmer maternity look with the "bump" out there. Great, not a problem for me, but make sure that the outfits fit everywhere. I just find it annoying that for the amount that these outfits cost (granted I know the H&M outfit was dirt cheap) that they don't fit. Regardless though, she is beautiful and regardless of the outfit, her beauty shines through. Two further thoughts: (1) Harry looked like maybe he wasn't totally into it tonight and (2) no pics with cats or kittens (I'm a cat lover!)? :-)

    1. I'm trying to make excuses for the lack of cats (could scare the cat, would scratch people), but as the mom of eight cats, I am getting tired of the dog focus of the RF! I as told there are some cats hidden away with some less-than-senior members, but it's hard to explain to my guys why there are so many dog photos. My cats have some dogs of their own and they are not impressed!

    2. I would urge care re assuming a certain state of mind when looking at still photos. I recall the polo kiss was make into the "kiss heard 'round the world" when really it was just a peck that took a nanosecond. I saw some video of Harry with lots of smiles, lots of engagement with the performers, lots of hand reaching for Duchess Meghan - just like always. Looks like it was a wonderful evening and lots of money was hopefully raised for Sentable.

      Delete
    3. Good observation. We know she loves her dogs, but don't know if she's ever lived with a cat fur baby. She's just beautiful day and night.

      Delete
    4. My guess is they were being extra careful about toxoplasmosis.

    5. I don’t wonder your cats are not impressed, Allison! I’m a cat lover too, and have a beautiful little grey girl to keep me company. I think you’re right about the absence of cats in the Royal Family - I seem to remember seeing a photo of Princess Michael with a cat, but she’s the only one I can come up with!

Allison, me too. I have often thought that the royal family should give cats equal time. I think it would encourage more cat adoptions. I love cats. I only have one now -- a sweet 16 year old guy who went blind over the summer. Bless you for loving eight.

    8. Another feline favorer here! We have two...both rescues. One turned out to be a Bengal..oh my! What a lovable handful. She's now fifteen and still jumping up to the top of cabinets. I've never had such a muscular cat! Our other one, 8yo, is a gray tuxedo who was born outside, became a very early mom of three healthy kittens outside and then was rescued...the little ones got adopted right away but mom not so until we adopted her at about age 1. They both love to join in our yoga practice...especially svasana!
I also notice Harry isn't wearing his Oura ring...wonder why?

      Delete
    9. Anon0.10 You are correct. I too felt that way about the polo kiss. Totally blown out of proportion, so I should have known better.

For all the cat lover posters, I have 4 kitties and they would love to see George, Charlotte, Louis and Baby Sussex with each a kitty of their very own! How cute that would be. I do think Anon3.33 has a point regarding the toxiplasmosis. I can totally see that or she could just be allergic. I don't see her snubbing any animal, but dang I was hoping for that cat photo!!!

      ~kjm

      Delete
    10. All your kitties sound so nice! Ours are also rescues. We were down to just one cat and then I rescued a little tiny baby from outside a store. Then some neighbors moved away and left a bunch of unneutered and pregnant cats. I didn't know about it until one by one they showed up, very hungry. One sweet girl took me to her kitten, Lassie style, and I took the little cutie inside. Then she had a second litter 2 weeks later. They are all inside now.

Because I am so fond of Meghan, I'll give her a pass, but when Baby Sussex is here and Meghan participates in a Mayhew fundraiser, I better see photos of her snuggling kittens and senior felines! Perhaps the kitties are shy around lots of people and cameras. I read that Mayhew placed many more cats than dogs last year, so at least they have no favorites.

Of course, it's hard to live in a palace with cats. But think how much fun it would be to watch them run through BP!

      Delete
    11. Bless you, Allison! I had all rescue fur babies. They are gone now. My tiger-striped male died with his paw grasping my finger. I actually have a photo of this. He was seventeen years old. I have had rescue pups, too. They are more than worth any time and effort they require. Not just for comfort and cuddling--cats can be picky. One liked to sleep on my head. I would wake up with this cat on my pillow. I never lacked for entertainment.

    14. Thank you, Paula!! And a resident cat would be terrific -- seems like there is enough room for a kitty. And, Anony, tiger-striped kitties are my favorite! Now I have no tiger striped. Some gorgeous torties, tuxedos, B&Ws, calico, dilute calico -- but no tigers. I grew up with dogs, my parents moved to Brooklyn and I found cats, and have been a dog AND cat lover ever since.

    15. Thanks Paula. I had seen this. I was just disappointed there were no pics of her petting and/or holding the kitten, plus I would have loved to have seen the cattery itself. Maybe on the next visit. For some reason, I have a suspicion that she might be allergic. She didn't pet the kitten, which doesn't seem like her. She seems to love animals so I feel like she would have touched him unless there was a good reason. ~kjm

  22. Wow from me, too! I bet the dress looks even wow-ier in person. I love the color and I like the darker lip color for the evening and for a change. She looks wonderful -- I agree that she may have gotten a bit of a tan during the holidays, and the dress slit makes the shoes very sexy. I'm still waiting for a replay of her wedding reception earrings, but the small dark blue earrings look good. Wonder what Harry thinks hen he puts on another blue (at least navy) suit and she comes out all sparkly?

im going to be in the minority here! I like the dress but the longer I look at it the more I think blueberry. I find the slit unnecessary and I have come to realize that I love her messy buns and im not a fan of the tight pulled back hair on her, I think she is prettier with it down or in her casual stylish buns. I also wish the neckline was a bit different as well. something to make it pop. she is carrying herself so well. I have no reference for being her stage of pregnant but that seems like a large baby?? the obsessive handholding to me just seems clingy, but to each their own:)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The handholding is a lot better than it was at the beginning. It might still be more PDA than I prefer but at least I don’t find it the focus point of all their engagements anymore.
I sometimes have to remind myself that they don’t yet know each other for 3 years. They are still in the honeymoon phase of their relationship, so I will cut them a bit of slack.

      Delete
    2. I don't understand why their hand holding is such an issue!!! I LOVE it and frankly would be rather concerned about the status of their relationship if it ever stops!! I especially love it when he waits and reaches for her. That's not clingly. He's talking care of her as I would want to be cared for by my love. Besides, the way they look at each other sometimes let's you know that they have to hold hands to keep from doing something more demonstrative! 😍

Doesn't really matter because pregnancy looks good on her. To me the best part of today was her glow, her smiles, her puppy snuggling and when she and Harry look at each other their heart eyes. 1. Not to spoil the fun too much, but there is actually very little correlation between the size of the bump and the baby.
The the way the bump look is all about the mother’s build and the amniotic fluid.

  38. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Meghan is struggling with her style. It's not that she doesn't look nice, but she's yet to wear something (to me) that makes me feel like she's really hit the mark. I feel like she's in this weird limbo and I' m not putting it on the pregnancy either. While I'm not comparing her to Kate, I just want her to get to the point where she knows what looks good on her body in multiple styles (that don't include black). I also don't know if it's pregnancy, but I wish she'd stop wearing her hair in a bun.

  47. i like the outfits, but she really needs to go up at least a size. these dresses look much too tight, and pull or scrunch up badly.

i also think the evening gown is too much for the dress code - everyone else is in business suits, and the ladies are casual evening or business with a sprinkling of cocktail dresses.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it fits her really well. It scrunches a bit but even with actual maternity pieces one often gets some of those issues. I also think it was perfect for the occasion. From the few other women we saw it was a bit more wow but the overall look of the other people was formal and taking it up a notch makes sense as she and Harry are the "hosts". I also go to some pretty fancy "charity events" and I regularly see people in everything from full length gowns and jewels to business attire.

    2. I think Meghan looks fantastic and I am not a usually a fan of sequined attire. Thought her sleek hair was a great compliment to the dress and make up. Like her lip color and love the very simple jewelry with the dress. She looked wonderful.

    3. I agree, Alpa. She and Harry look like they're dressed for two different events. The heel height looks great as long as she's comfortable, but - sandals and bare feet/legs at an evening event in London in January?? It makes me cold just looking at the pix!

    4. I agree Ali, I thought she looked perfect for the event. People pay more to come to these "charity events" to see famous people and they expect them to look the part. Harry looked stylish but lets be honest everyone mostly pays attention to what the women are wearing :).

wonderful work of Prince Harry, the Cirque and all for supporting Sentebale. Wonderful support from Meghan too. I hope the evening was very successful and that they were able to raise a lot.
Very busy week for the Duchess. Always good to see her happy face.

    1. I had the same thought about the earrings. For fancy I always think larger splashier earrings but I really liked the smaller ones with this outfit. Great choice. I do hope in future that she gets to wear some of the beautiful jewelry owned by the crown. I was looking at the documentary about the 100 years of the crown and back in the day, HM and her crew used to wear those jewels. They were so sparkly!!! Even Harry and William remarked about how sparkly they were. I guess its déclassé to wear a lot of jewels but boy those were the days!!

  52. I think the evening dress has some ruching and what looks like a bow around where the baby bump is, and it's sparkly, so may seem too tight. Otherwise the dress is fairly straight, so I think has to fit to the figure; otherwise one looks like one is wearing a sparkly sack.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hmmm....not as much in love with this evening dress as her simple H&M earlier today. I love the blue sequin dress on the model but it's not quite working on Meghan. The dress is designed with a fold and a little drape but that's lost on Meghan (I'm guessing because it's not a maternity dress.

I do think that Meghan looks stunning. The smoky eye and dark lip make her look amazing tonight. I think this was the perfect time to wear her hair slicked back. And I like her accessories - the simple show and clutch. Also, when you have a sparkly overall dress like this one, the simple jewelry doesn't compete and works well.

And perhaps the dress was a little bit 'over the top' for the event.

  54. The Duchess looks literally like a star-filled sky. Just exquisite. Super-shimmer done so right and that shade of dark-ink blue is spectacular. (On another note, have you guys noticed how much the Duke has started resembling his father?)

  55. Charlotte,

I used to be able to comment on your blog, but lately, none of my posts go through. When I click on Preview, I see nothing. I hope you get this and can fix whatever the glitch is.

    Thanks much.

  56. One of my messages just went through the preview stage, so I will try again.

Thank you, Charlotte, for your wonderful coverage of the charities supported by the Duchess. I appreciate the education you give us. I also think the Duchess looks fantastic tonight.

  57. Duke and Duchess of Sussex I meant of course. I had written just Duchess Meghan and thought it was not fair to compliment Prince Harry's look as well :)

  58. Again Meghan knocks it out of the park! An incredible look, so glamorous, so elegant, so flattering, I can’t believe she can pull that off in late pregnancy! Glittering and glowing, and with killer accessories as usual. I have loved every look, that cream ensemble the other day, wow! Even red and purple which I didn’t think was possible, Meghan knows how to style herself perfectly, including mastering proportion. Brava Duchess!

  59. I like the dress on the model, but don't think it looks good on her at all. I just don't get why she continues to squeeze herself into non-maternity dresses at this stage. Especially from the front, it looks very unflattering in my opinion. (In particular the second pic from the top, and the one where she and Harry are standing at their seats before sitting down down).
Such a pretty woman and so many beautiful dresses to choose from - why go with one that doesn't fit and still costs a fortune?

  60. Meghan looks beautiful. I love her makeup and hairstyle. Her gown seems slightly formal, since other women wore cocktail dresses and the men were in suit and tie rather than black tie. The slit and open sandals do make it more casual, however, and the sparkly dark blue is lovely. Meghan was a bit overdressed all day, but she did look gorgeous.

  61. Very, very happy that PP and the other people involved walked away from that crash with no or minor injuries. I'm sure PP is so glad the other people were not injured, especially the baby. Maybe his age was a factor, maybe the other car's speed, maybe the light and time of day. Important thing is that there was no disaster, which seems amazing. Read one place that PP had a bodyguard, but not sure if that's true. Just so glad everyone is OK.

  62. And regarding the formalness of MM's dress, maybe she's having clothes cravings. She could have worn something simple and short and black, but looks like she felt like something midnight blue and sparkly and sexy.

  63. Saw that already? https://www.therealmyroyals.com/the-duchess-of-sussex-heads-to-restaurant-with-her-new-right-hand-man-after-kensington-palace-hires-ex-brexit-speechwriter-to-take-on-role-of-deputy-press-secretary/

  64. Charlotte-
Just saw that Meghan was photographed in Notting Hill with new deputy secretary wearing H&M jeans, mulberry purse, Stuart weitzman heels, navy coat, aviators and messy bun. Do you post on unofficial engagements? I like her private style. Seems so relaxed but still glam!

  65. I saw a video where the Duke and Duchess got some boos from the crowd when they were introduced. Does anyone know if this is real? If so, how sad for them. If not, still sad anyway for them, the things they have to put up with.

  66. Love this gown. She's looked wonderful all day long. It seems that guests wore a wide range of attire, some quite casual, ladies in fancier gowns; and then Harry is standing next to a fellow in an evening jacket minus the rest of the usual evening kit. Her gorgeous blue number is a bit more black tie, but the simple lines save it from being "de trop", I think. The beautiful soft red lip color is perfect for her. One could say that the HRH in the room should look a proper Duchess. Ditto the animal shelter. Hope we see this gown again.
