Duchess Meghan Praises the "Ripple Effect" of Endeavour Fund Award Nominees

It was a night of celebrating courage and admirable achievement for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Endeavour Fund awards tonight.

The couple walked the red carpet amid a sea of camera flashes.

The scene at Draper's Hall.

In 2012, the Royal Foundation created the Endeavour Fund. The Fund offers seed funding for sporting and adventure challenges and helps emerging initiatives with advice, hands-on support and mentoring. The fund plays an important role in ensuring that more servicemen and women have the opportunity to rediscover their self-belief and fighting spirit through physical challenges. It aims to help those that are hard to reach and to support activities that contribute to the participants’ recoveries - either through mentorship, qualifications or work opportunities. As Patron of the Fund, Harry has launched a series of programmes and events in their support. In November 2013, Prince Harry joined one of three teams of wounded servicemen and women to trek to the geographic South Pole for the Walking with the Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge.

The Endeavour Fund Awards have become an annual calendar event for Harry, and now his wife too.  The awards celebrate the achievements of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women who have taken part in remarkable sporting and adventure challenges over the last year. Meghan joined Harry at the awards last year and once again she's been involved in the process all the way. In January, she and Harry attended the judging for the awards privately.

Harry and Meghan first joined a pre-ceremony reception where they met the inspiring nominees, as well as endeavour participants and key supporters of the Endeavour Fund.

Whilst chatting to guests reporters heard Harry say: "There's one heavy baby in there." Meanwhile Meghan told invitees Harry's going to be "a great dad".

A guest asked Meghan if she knows the baby's gender. She said they didn't: "It's one of those things, no matter what it is, it's still going to be a surprise."

The video below features footage from the arrival and reception.

Then it was time for the awards.

They were hosted by Ross Kemp. More from the Mail Online:

'Host for the evening was Ross Kemp, the actor and documentary maker. He said he spoke to the couple about their new Labrador puppy. Describing Meghan as 'stunning,' he added: 'We talked about how they've got a puppy and we got a puppy before we had our first boy. It's a preparation for nappy changing and pooping basically.
Kemp looked emotional as Harry praised him for his documentaries he made about soldiers fighting in Afghanistan in 2008-9. 'He said it changed public opinion in terms of the sympathy towards the soldiers in the ground,' the actor said.
He was saying it helped bring awareness. It was actually nice to be banked by someone like him who's been there himself and seen and done it. If you look at A-listers in the world there probably aren't many bigger than those two. They are down to earth, very warm, very decent human beings who care. They could potentially be a massive catalyst for great change not just in the UK but around the world.'

Meghan took to the stage to present the Celebrating Excellence Award.

Addressing the audience she said: "I'm so, so grateful to be back. Last year was my first time coming and it was such a meaningful night. Before the reception Harry and I were talking to all the nominees and in speaking to one of them he said, you know after I mentioned to him, 'Gosh the impact you guys make is huge. It's so much bigger than you.' No it's not about us, it's the ripple effect. And, in true modesty of all the nominees; yes it is about the ripple effect. What I admired in him - and I feel is true about all the nominees - is you don't have that ripple effect unless each of you is brave enough to make that first wave. It's so important to remember that because what you're doing is inspiring so many people - so thank you from all of us for being that inspiration."

A video.

The award is given to an individual who has endeavoured to achieve excellence in their chosen sport or adventure challenge. This year's chosen winner was Nathan Forster.

I was very interested to read a tweet from Lizzie Robinson revealing Nathan already has a special royal connection. Harry gave up his seat in a Spitfire during the Battle of Britain 75th anniversary flypast when Nathan had a technical issue with his aircraft. Lizzie said Harry was "adamant" Nathan should take his place.

Nathan was badly injured in Afghanistan in an IED blast that ended his military career. In just five years, he's gone from having no flying experience to a commercial airline pilot with the help of organisation Flying for Freedom.

Prince Harry presented the Henry Worsley Award to Shaun Pascoe. It is awarded to the individual who has best inspired others through the demonstration of determination in the face of adversity, whilst endeavouring to support others with their recovery through sport or adventure challenge.

Shaun Pascoe was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress after numerous tours around the world with the Royal Air Force. He set up the sailing charity Turn to Starboard, providing more than 1,200 sailing opportunities to service personnel and veterans.

The Henry Worsley Award is named after the late Henry Worsley, who tragically lost his life in January 2016 whilst attempting to cross the Antarctic landmass, solo and unsupported. Henry, a career soldier and an experienced polar adventurer, undertook this incredible expedition in order to raise money for the Endeavour Fund.

The award for Recognising Achievement went to the inspirational Kelly Ganfield for her success during the Invictus Games.

More from Rebecca English:

'Your Royal Highness, you're absolutely amazing in acknowledging many of us soldiers,' Ms Ganfield said. 'And the Duchess of Sussex— you've got all this to come.
Earlier, Ms Ganfield met the couple at the reception when Harry had teased her and her running guide Mikael Huggins as he had watched her race in the Invictus Games. 'He said that Mikael slightly slowed me down and we giggled about that,' she said.
'He met me in Bath for the trials with Meghan. She is a total asset to the British public and nation.' She is going to be a mother soon and — yet again from the trials — she saw my daughter Bethany who was two at the time. She is now three. Bethany gravitated to her and [Meghan] kind of gravitated to Bethany. She has cerebral palsy. Meghan was amazing with her. And [Harry] was beaming — but he's always like that.'

Harry and Meghan with all the nominees and presenter Ross Kemp.

You can watch the awards ceremony in its entirety below. Harry delivered a terrific speech which you can hear one hour into the event: "All of you and your families have proven you have the ability to summon more strength and resilience than anyone else we know."

The Duchess selected a bespoke Givenchy look featuring a crisp white shirt and a long black skirt with a split. The choice has proven a divisive one. I very much like the timeless simplicity of the combination and the continuing fashion relationship between Meghan and the immensely talented Clare Waight Keller. I do, however, agree with those who suggested another element would have been the perfect finishing touch. Perhaps hair worn down with a pair of statement earrings?

The classic white shirt and long evening skirt has been a style staple for decades. From Meghan's style icon Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy to Carolina Herrera (we see one of her designs beside a photo of Herrera below) and Queen Letizia, it's a tried and trusted look which can take one to any variety of events.

Meghan's eye-catching pumps are the Aquazzura Rendez Vous 105 mules. Described as: "Made in Italy and topped with a thick band of gold leather to keep your feet secure as well as balance the 105mm heel. This pair is designed with a sleek pointed toe for a leg-lengthening effect."

The £530 shoes are available at Net-A-Porter and Rue La La.

The Duchess carried her black Givenchy clutch.

Laura identified Meghan's ring as the Ecksand Ruby Cocktail ring. It's a gorgeous shade of pink. Handcrafted in Canada with sustainable materials, the cabochon cut ruby retails for $2,135 CDN.

And completing the look, her Vanessa Tugendhast Precious earrings with clover paved diamonds.

During the ceremony, it appears both Harry and Meghan wore Endeavour Fund bands.

I couldn't close without a sartorial nod of approval for the very dapper Prince Harry. As noted by several readers, his suit choice was on the money tonight!

We'll see the Duke and Duchess on Tuesday evening for a gala performance of The Wider Earth at the Natural History Museum in support of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust. The Wider Earth is a critically acclaimed theatrical production about the young Charles Darwin’s expedition on HMS Beagle.

  7. The look Meg is wearing is something similar to what carolyn bessette kennedy once wore. I know she is one of Meg’s fashion icons. It also reminds me of a look Sharon Stone and Julia Roberts both did at the Oscars. Mixing menswear fashion with a feminine and simple skirt. I’m not sure it works with the baby bump. But I appreciate her adventurous fashion risks. Either way she is glowing. Maybe the People article with the support of her friends has given her some added comfort this week. I hope so!

Agree with everything you wrote, Allison P! A very elegant timeless ensemble in theory, maybe not very well-executed here with the baby bump. Meghan still looks radiant & poised though. Those shoes, wow!

What an inspiration the nominees & winners are! Beacons of strength.

    2. I think you've nailed it. It looks off for her figure right now but the idea is glamorous.

    3. @Allison P - yes, I remember this look as well. Sharon Stone did it with Vera Wang skirt (and remember the year she pulled off the black GAP t-shirt at the Oscars?) and I remember Julia in something similar as well. And someone that paired a white button down with a yellow full skirt - back in the 90's - maybe it was Calista Flockhart? Classic look - like it!

And the shoes really pull it all together and up level it to chic!

Meghan was great at the podium. She's a great presenter.

Harry looks grown up and stylish as well. :-)

    4. I thought of Carolyn Bessette as well . I like this look but it didn’t need to be Givenchy. I kind of wish she had found the skirt and shirt in Topshop or Zara and put it together. I can already see the articles about the cost of the outfit. Sinead

    1. I agree. This look is definitely a classic and a while shirt with black pants / skirt is a staple in my wardrobe, I just don't see why this was a choice for tonight when there are so many lovely maternity styles to choose from. In my profession I see this combination daily and I suppose that's why it fell flat for me. Sorry Meghan!

Thanks Anon. I really like the top and I love the black + white combination in general but this particular outfit doesn't work too well for me, I'm afraid. The important thing, however, is that it worked for Meghan!

  19. I think what I love most about this outfit is that it's a dress that Meghan would wear pregnant or not. I love that her style hasn't changed one bit just because she's pregnant.

I can't wait to hear her presentation and read about these inspiring winners.

  20. Totally feeling the Carolyn Bessemer-Kennedy vibe! Absolutely the best look so far, and that’s saying a lot. (for those who are who don’t know who she is, google her name) Sadly she, her sister and her husband were killed in an airplane crash, many years ago, but her style is timeless.

  28. Those shoes, love, love, love them. The outfit, well, the black and white is great; however, (and I really hate to say this) but Baby Sussex is hogging the entire skirt, I guess I can say that the baby's outfit looks really good on him or her. It will be fantastic when Meghan wears it after the baby is born. And I'm so very happy that Harry is not in a blue suit again. The grey suit looks really good on him. Can't wait to see the full post.

  32. Meghan's skirt is obviously custom made. The still photos do not do it justice. If you have the time to watch the video of the Endeavor Fund the skirt and blouse fit beautifully and are very flattering. More importantly, if time permits please take the time to watch the entire award ceremony. The Endeavor Fund is an amazing cause highlighting truly amazing people. The video offers such a positive impact and makes one question what am I doing to help now or what can I do in the future.

    2. USA Granny, I was going to write what you said about the video! I looked at this in a still and just hated it. I watched the video and switched to loving it. Meghan looks, in the video, snug and compact and very "together." The still photos make her look very different.

I love this take on her working uniform. First, Meghan always looks spectacular in a crisp white blouse. And her always looks great in a split skirt and gold high heels. :)

I wonder if the new ring is a gift? Maybe Valentine's Day from Harry? She gets expensive jewelry from her friends, though, The pieces she wore on the outing with the RF when she first wore her navy cape came from Markus.

    3. I was disappointed in the look in the still photos. But when I see it in the videos, I think it's great. Harry and Meghan are a great couple. I love them. Thank you Charlotte, for helping us to understand the great Endeavor Fund.

Harry pointed to Meghan's bump and joked "there's a big baby in there" and I wonder if it's going to get all the hoopla that the one lady's "fat lady" comment did from a few weeks ago. That lady obviously meant it as a compliment to point out a healthy pregnancy and had a specific cultural meaning but in Harry's case, it didn't really sound like a compliment or anything at all. Hopefully he and Meghan joke like this in private and he knows she's okay with what was really him calling her bump big, and I'm not trying to say he insulted his wife or anything. I just am interested to see if people pick up on his comment bc imo at first glance it was "worse" than the 'fat lady' descriptor.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't understand how Harry's comment could be construed as an insult at all. The size of the baby isn't something Meghan can control nor something remotely negative? I mean, I'm sure big babies aren't fun to deliver but other than that there's nothing wrong with them. I think it was a funny and innocuous comment.

      Delete
    2. Zora from Prague7 February 2019 at 22:09

    4. The quote up top says "there's one heavy baby in there". Lots of talk about possible twins, so maybe he's trying to put a lid on twins talk. Either way, he doesn't need to speak about it and I'm sure Meghan will let him know. New territory for both of them.

Absolutely agree, the joke was a loving one ! Besides , no one can ignore that bump ahahaha and I can’t really understand people saying that this or this doe snot flatter the pregnancy etc ... but actually, beeing realistic, what sort of clothes can really be flattering for a heavy pregnant woman ? My personnal answer is : clothes in which she feels fine ... if she does feel comfortable, she will smile and glow , and that’s how she looks great ... The shoes are to die for, As always Meghan goes simple but with a zest of glam , I would just have added bigger
      earrings ...
Harry is amazing , first time I like his clothes !!!!

I don't think it's a stretch to think that 'big baby' comments are essentially 'big bump' comments (what do you think the basis for his comment is??). All Im saying is that a lot of people, including people on this blog, thought the 'fat lady' COMPLIMENT was insulting, so I find it interesting (and a bit hypocritical) for people not to think the same about this.

    7. Zora from Prague8 February 2019 at 22:45

Harry is Meghan's husband and the father of the baby. Forgive me for saying so, but he had a share in the fact that his wife is carrying their baby - big or small. :) He also shares with Meghan the joys as well as difficulties of this pregnancy and both have been apparently happy and excited about the baby. As the baby's father and his wife's husband, I think his comment stands on a slightly different ground than anybody else's comments. In addition, do you really think he would say anything that would hurt Meghan? I'm sure she is completely at ease with his remark. She has been lovingly touching/cradling the baby, she's not hiding it.

  36. Fashion comment for now, will comment on the engagement once the full post is up.
I normally like the simplicity of a long skirt with a button up shirt, but this just isn’t working for me. I would like to see this done as a non-maternity outfit though. The skirt bunches up a lot and the way it’s cut to go over her stomach is not super flattering and looks very square head-on. And I don’t really care for the shoes. Queen Letizia has some that are similar with a clear strap across the same part of the foot and I don’t like those either. But the style of her hair looks good with the simplicity of the outfit. I would just give almost anything to see her wear a maternity dress and not another Givenchy. It doesn’t have to be a muumuu, just something made as actual maternity wear. But she’s pretty as always.

In general I think men should try and shy away from making any comments about a pregnant woman's body or baby bump in any way whether they are married or not. Esp in public but really as much as possible in all settings.

I know she has her own style but she often appears to not fit into her clothes. Kate's are so fitted and tailored. Maybe that's what I'm expecting. Otherwise, she looks fabulous!! Glad to see Harry in something other than blue. :)

    1. I think part of this look is a regal, almost aloof attitude. I don’t know a lot about Carolyn Bessette-Kenedy but from the pictures I saw she had that aloof look down to a T.
Meghan on the other had has a sparkly engaging, busy personality, which might explain why a lot of people feel that something in the look does not gel.
      I don’t know, just a thought.

    2. Very similar outfits but you are right Meghan’s persona is much warmer and smilier. By many accounts Ms Besette-Kennedy very much was warm and engaging in private but struggled immensely with the public attention being married to “America’s Prince”

It was almost a parallel universe situation to the British Royal Family in that the Kennedys de facto are America’s Royal Family but without anything official. None of them are obligated to be anything more than private citizens (though some pursue public careers) yet many of them dealt with intense media attention. I always thought it was unfair that Carolyn never pursued a public life yet was hounded constantly by media. This I think was often the root of her frowning and stand offishness in public.

Meghan I think has a much different personality and there is an expected formal public role with the BRF. I think Meghan has taken to it quite well by always seeming engaging and smiling and a good listener.

The similarity in some of their clothing choices is quite striking though. I clearly remember Carolyn Besette Kennedy as an absolute fashion icon during the years of her marriage. Her minimalist style had not been seen in quite some time in the fashion world at the time. And her looks seemed effortless and chic.

  60. I really enjoy it when both of them attend engagements together, there is a better media spotlight on the events when they attend as a team =) I am hoping that Harry and Meghan also work together to combine their own passions + interests into some project or charity in the future - women in the army or something along those lines. While I appreciate that each royal has their own passions they are interested in, I feel that if they combine their interests and passions as well into something big - it will be tremendous. I think this is something Harry and Meghan have the capability of achieving.

  61. Shoes are so sexy...love them!!! Like her hair very much...sophisticated. Her outfit though is not working for me. I generally always love this “look” but something about the proportions seem to be off...maybe because of the pregnancy?...I’m just not sure. I probably would have saved this “look” for after pregnancy...think it would be a winner then, fitted to her.

  62. I love that Kelly Ganfield said Meghan is a `total asset to the British public and nation' during her acceptance speech. And I have to admit the skirt looks much better when you see Meghan moving in it but I do think Baby Sussex is having growth spurts and that's why on some outfits the fit on Meghan's body is a little off. Still love and lust for the shoes. And that ring is also a WOW, pretty and simple but oh so WOW. She did say she was going to work up to her due date and she surely is doing just that. I admire her for that - it's not easy getting dressed up, no matter the season, when you're carrying around your own personal furnace or putting on heels when your feet are saying to you yeah the shoes are pretty but no thanks it really should be a slipper day for us. Can't wait to see the next outfit. And thank you Charlotte for reminding us of how important this Foundation is and how much it helps wounded servicemen and women.

  63. Loved what they are doing and supporting. Supporting service members with compassion and grace. My humble thoughts about her look, I liked the look she was going for but it missed something. As many have said something was lacking. Perhaps if the skirt had been higher up and flowing (such as the 2nd picture in your 4 picture collage.) She looked fine from the front but the side angles just seemed off. Of course Harry looked quite besuited himself. :) As always, loved the jewelry. Thanks for keeping me updated Charlotte! 64. I like that the Duchess and the designer thought to adapt this look to her current physique. It's one of my very, very favorite looks for evening wear. I think it needs to be very crisp, though, to offset the innate casualness -- the sleeves rolled up neatly, the blouse nicely arranged, etc. Still, I'm sure she felt lovely and comfortable wearing it. Those shoes were a very nice touch! More important is the work that she and the Duke were there to do, however. :)

  66. I think what makes the outfit look “off” for me is the blouse being tucked in. Because the skirt has to come up so high, and at this point in her pregnancy she really doesn’t have a defined waist, the skirt and blouse meet in an odd place, like there isn’t enough of the blouse showing in the torso area. I do, however, like the shoes. They’re really different than what she’s worn before.

What a wonderful thing to do for those who have made great sacrifices of their lives for the cause of freedom. I must say, the Duke of Sussex looks very nice in his ensemble. As others have posted, I, too, am glad to see the Duke in a suit that’s not black or dark blue. He looks very nice. The Duchess is lovely. Thanks, Charlotte.

  70. Wonderful event. Harry seems happy and relaxed. I remember the days of lovely evening blouse and skirt combinations This one is odd looking and ill fitting, especially the shirt. How many times will we see the ubiquitous “chic white shirt”? The shoes remind me of the “slinky” metal spring-like toys, so I don’t care for the style.. She looks healthy and excited for the recipients. The slit is pretty high on her thigh when sitting, so I think a similar look when not pregnant would be stunning on her.

I will be in the camp who like this look. I think it is one of her best looks during the pregnancy.
We know Meghan like the boyfriend shirt look and while it can easily look too informal, it seems to work for this event. In a way it is similar to the McQueen tux she wore last year to the same event.
I would love to see her repeat the outfit at some point when she is not pregnant. Although I doubt that you would be able to change the skirt for none maternity wear, which is a pity considering it’s a Givenchy skirt.

If I could make one change I would add some bigger earrings. I agree with Charlotte that it just needs something to make the outfit pop.

      Delete
    3. Haha! I thought that was a mark from applying clear nail polish to a beginning runner. I have done that many times in the past when I did not have time or extra hose available to change. I thought it looked like she was wearing hose. As a medical pro I have seen many scars and that does not look like a scar to me. Also, we have seen her feet many times, as she has frequently worn sandals. I have not seen that mark before. Unless she had the surgery very recently, it is not a scar from foot surgery, although the placement is similar, I agree. In that case, a fresh surgery incision would not look like that. It would be wider and reddish. And she would be wearing a post-op shoe. Plus--would she even have elective surgery at this point?

On second thought, that slit went clear up to mid-thigh when she was sitting. Probably not hose, or at least not pantyhose.

Both Meghan’s and Harry’s body language say a lot about their empathy and commitment ... I am amazed at how Harry looks at the same time young and mature, especially when he stops smiling and listens intensely to someone .... he really has beautifully evolved , and’ Meghan’s supportive love is probably what he needed to bloom as he is doing now ... and they both show interests in organizations which are really meaningfull to them , Harry having’ been himself on a war site . They are both an important asset to the BRF , in my mind they are the link between and old fashioned and loved royal family and young people who might not really know a lot about the history and the traditions of their country .

  77. Love this entire look from head to toe. First off, one must be genetically gifted to pull off this slicked back hairstyle, with a center part, no less. Secondly, this is such a sophisticated look. I read somewhere once that Meghan was quoted as saying that Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's wedding gown was one of her all-time favorites and I think she she and Meghan have similar styles; something of a minimalist look, or less is more. CBK rocked this same slicked back hair and always minimal (sometime no) jewelry. It's good to have a style icon from whom one can draw inspiration. Alas, mine is Coco Chanel. Would that I could dress in Chanel every day!

  83. So Meghan and Harry are visiting Morocco for 3 days. How can she do that while 7 months pregnant

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, 2 months to go... As my doc always said: „It’s OK if you feel fine. You‘re not sick, you‘re only pregnant“. And I trust that Meghan doesn‘t have to depend on a commercial airline which imposes restrictions regarding air travel during pregnancy.

      Delete
    2. I expect that the reason they announced the mini-tour so late is so that Meghan could see if she felt up to it at this stage of her pregnancy. If she was not feeling up for it, Harry could easily just go alone and nobody would have been the wizer.
So I am guessing that physically she feels fine.

      Delete
    3. The airline restrictions are usually for the final two months, certainly the final 4-6weeks. Before that it is a decision for the parents . My SIL made an overseas flight at about 6-8 weeks pre term and ended up having a premature baby born with Hyaline Membrane Disease, a complication usually in premature births at that stage and most common in male newborns. I believe Patrick, one of the Kennedy babies, had this complication and also did not survive. There have been medical advancements in the treatment of this tragic complication but there is still a risk. I am sure Morocco has first class neonatal ICU's and specialists. I imagine Meghan's physician will be traveling with the couple. I don't believe any commercial airline would encourage or even permit travel at this point. On the other hand, if a smaller, private airplane is used there is usually less stability in smaller craft.

If I were Doria, I would be very anxious at this point and perhaps pleading with my daughter to reconsider the trip. I cannot believe the FO not only allowing but encouraging this trip. The possible benefits do not justify the potential danger to the baby. Far worse than any online bullying could pose. At this point my OB would not let me travel by car more than 30 minutes from the hospital. To travel by plane at this late stage would have been AMA. Even using a large military plane- even one equipped with an emergency surgery- would not matter because the changes in air pressure and other factors would still apply. In fact, the larger planes travel at a much higher elevation than most smaller craft . The air pressure factor would be worse in a large plane while stability is a factor with the smaller planes.
Any birth involving a mother this age, a first-time one at that, is considered a high-risk birth, no matter how healthy the mother.
It is a simple matter of evaluating risk/benefit. Is even a ten percent chance of premature birth worth any benefits from the visit? The chances of a Moroccan birth complicate the situation. The baby already will likely be both a British and American citizen. I won't even discuss how a birth outside the UK would feed the gossip.

      I am absolutely gob-smacked.

      Delete
    4. You write "at this point" but none of us know when this baby is actually due. The pregnancy announcement was in mid October. Assuming she was at 12 weeks (and she might have been earlier, if they announced as she was starting to show), that puts her at 31 weeks at the end of February with a due date around May 1st. Airlines have different policies in terms of travel in the 3rd trimester; the most restrictive I could find in my brief look was British Airways. They don't allow travel past 36 weeks. Some have very little restrictions at all as long as the pregnant traveler has medical clearance. I'm at a loss as to why you feel she isn't able to make an informed decision in consult with her ob-gyn, "informed" being the key word here. All we know is that she's having a baby "in the spring".

      Delete
    5. I appreciate your input to my comment, anon 22:10 and you raise some good points.

If she had been more than 12 weeks at announcement it would beg the question--why did they wait until Eugenie's wedding to tell family? Harry actually said upon arrival in Australia that they had purposefully waited for the public announcement in order for it to be made in Australia. That statement is on tape. The question is, of course, how long did they wait?

But you are correct, anon 22;10--we do not know officially, as we have with other royal births, when the birth is expected, other than "Spring"-which covers a three month window of time. Although there was a reported statement regarding late April, early May during a walkabout, KP never followed that up with a confirmation. As of this current mini-tour announcement, it is still "Spring."

Again, my main point was Risk/Benefit. And there is a risk with traveling long distances. There is an increased risk of blood clots forming and migrating to cause stroke due to the prolonged inactivity. Any competent OB-Gyn. will tell you that. In addition, the reportedly approved statements from Meghan's friends indicate that she is enduring stress from online remarks. Add the stress of travel and a busy schedule to the inherent risks of older and first time births...All these factors need to be considered, not just the parameters airlines allow. If HM and the government say she will make that trip, I doubt any royal physician who wants to keep the job will deny them.

If she were the PM making a Brexit -related meeting. Maybe. I think the PM of New Zealand traveled to London for the important Commonwealth meeting late in her pregnancy. Maybe she shared long distance traveling advice in late pregnancy during her recent thank-you tea from Harry and Meghan.
I simply cannot understand the medical/political rationale in this instance that justifies taking any chance on a premature birth.
I believe one must sign a waiver with the airline assuming responsibility when flying those final weeks, as well as having written sanction from one's physician.

I think a lot of these questions could be resolved by KP's giving the usual few week's time frame instead of months. That is rather puzzling to me. I think a vague due-date may possibly be part of a plan to avoid scrutiny and publicity of the birth until after the birth and the family have returned home to Windsor. This isn't the child of an immediate heir.
The only way this would work is by not giving a precise due date so that press and others will not be waiting on the spot. It is also necessary to be vague on where the birth will take place or to encourage/allow false rumors. Speculation has included everything from home birth to a near Windsor hospital to the Lindo Wing--which was the subject of a recent rumor/"exclusive" If I were in charge of the security/publicity in these circumstances that is the plan I would follow. I cannot envision the Diana-Catherine steps of the Lindo Wing scenario being a wise choice, given the current climate, if the threat is as great as has been indicated here.

By the way. Someone mentioned Catherine and the Scandinavian tour. Using the reported due time from Meghan- which is nearly identical to Catherine's timeframe with Louis , she would be at least a month further on in the last week of February than Catherine was at the last week of January for her nearly week long tour. Catherine had nearly three months to go before Louis's April 23 birth. Meghan will have nearly two months to go by that time-table. That means mid third trimester. I understand the middle trimester, months 4 through 6,is usually viewed as the safest time for travel.

We'll see how all this plays out. Someone suggested Harry could go alone- as William did to Malta. That is always an option. I suspect that would please Doria. If Meghan were my daughter having her first child at age 37+, I know I would be relieved.

      Delete
    6. Anon 19:51 this comment seems very dramatic. Though I am sure your concern is rightfully due to the very sad experience your sister in law had.

None of us know Meghan’s due date or health status. If her doctor has ok’d it then that’s all that matters. She is a seemingly a very fit and healthy woman. That makes a big difference in tolerating stresses of pregnancy. Remember there are people in all types of jobs during pregnancy without the logistical support Meghan has. Nurses on their feet all day, long hour jobs, and yes even flight attendants. A healthy pregnancy with informed medical care does not require women to alter their plans and routines greatly. I feel confident Meghan has both.

      Delete
    7. There isn’t anything inherently risky in travel if you are healthy. The airlines only have a rule at the end for liability reasons. It’s not out of medical concern of air travel itself. I flew twice a month up until the last month of all my pregnancies and felt fine. I stayed hydrated and walked around the plane frequently. I had extremely competent medical care and this was the advice my doctors provided. No discussion of the safest months or anything of the sort. I also did not have complicated pregnancies and was overall healthy. This makes a big difference. I would assume Meghan is well informed by her doctors and isn’t doing anything against their advice.

      Delete
    8. I don't know if your age and stress factors were comparable to Meghan's. I do know that avoiding dehydration and prolonged immobility are helpful. However, I doubt Meghan's security would allow her to have free run of the plane for exercise. I can just imagine the passengers' reaction to Meghan's strolling by. When royals fly commercial airlines they generally are confined to the first class area and have as many as three security officers on hand. I am not even sure how much room there is for walking around in first class aisles. You were lucky that turbulence or other factors did not keep you belted to your seat. There is absolutely no way to assure she will be able to move around enough to avoid the risk of formation of DVTs. I hope her physicians are considering this. She is not the average pregnant patient. Compression hose and chair exercises can help. However, the best exercise is weight-bearing, not sitting. That is why your doctor advised walking about the cabin.
My point has always been risk/benefit considerations.

This just really does not make sense to me. I'll just have to assume there is some vital reason why they both must go at that time instead of waiting. I do hope there is some re-thinking between now and then.

Anon 10:51-Thank-you for your kind remarks. My SIL's experience was not what I based my concerns/ opinion on, however. I was discussing one of the complications possible with premature birth in the last 6-8 weeks and her experience was an example, along with Jackie Kennedy's. Flight attendants? Really? I am imagining someone with Meghan's belly maneuvering those very narrow aisles pushing a drinks cart. ;)

      Delete
    9. Flight attendants absolutely work while pregnant. I see it all the time as a frequent business traveler. At least in the USA they are not legally allowed to be prohibited from their job due to pregnancy. It would be a form of sex discrimination. If they have medical reasons prohibiting them that is a different situation and they would likely have a disability related leave of absence. My point is we don’t know if Meghan has any concerns related to her pregnancy but we can assume she is low risk as she is traveling so much. Those discussions are between her and her doctor and I’m confident members of the royal family receive excellent medical care.

Again I am a frequent traveler and have never been on a flight where I was belted in from take off to landing. Even bumpy ones are rarely locked down for the duration. And I do believe Meghan could move about a cabin if needed. Her security advises her. They don’t physically restrain her in her seat. Even standing and doing some stretching is helpful. You have repeatedly mentioned a risk benefit analysis which I understand. My point is I am extremely confident she had discussed this exact analysis with her health care providers. We don’t know the details of that conversation and it is rightly not our business; but we can see the outcome of it is that it has been determined to be a low risk activity for Meghan. That may not be true for other pregnant women. So It’s hard to make generalizations when everyone’s health and potential complication risks are so varied.

  84. Harry was the "winner" of this outing. His gray suit looks great. Meghan's outfit. . . the concept was good, the execution was a fail. My first thought was 'she's wearing Harry's shirt'. If the neckline had been better fitted and a couple of well placed pleats or gathers on the skirt I think this could have been her best pregnancy look to date. Also, wearing a larger earring and a simple gold necklace would have finished the look nicely.

  85. Thank you, Charlotte, for posting the link to the entire program. The strength and perseverance of all the nominees were all-inspiring. How well Harry has kept his commitment to serve veterans! The Invictus Games and the Endeavour Fund seem to work so beautifully hand in hand. I've read, I believe the CEO of Invictus, that Harry is truly the visionary behind the organizations. Harry could perhaps improve his speech presentation. IMO, he should make more eye contact with the audience and spend less time just looking down and reading his speech. I must say that he looked very handsome in his grey suit. I hope he has given up the blue suits for good- William seems to have done so. They would both look smashing in navy, though. I think Meghan looked lovely, and I personally have always liked a white shirt with a black skirt. I would have liked to see a crisp cuff, or the shirt buttoned up instead of the rolled up sleeve and open shirt color together. I think the sleek hair worked in contrast to the softness of the shirt look. I know some of us always want Meghan to wear one more piece of jewelry than she has on, but I don't think Meghan is going to wear the necklace that people want her to. Of course, until she surprises us by wearing one when we least expect it.

  88. First of, Harry rocked this night :)

It’s heartening (and sad for me because there is a need in the first place) watching Harry taking up the mantle for this cause. Diana sparked my interest in the RF with her work with HIV and land mines. Before then, I didn’t really pay them much attention. Having worked overseas in conflict zones, I dealt with both of these issues directly. Back then treatment for HIV/AIDS was limited (and still experimental) in many poor nations (and even diagnosing was controversial because treatment was not available and having such a diagnosis meant death sentences for these patients, because there were so much fear and misinformation about it). Prevention was key, but extreme poverty, nasty infectious diseases like cholera, local cultural practices, and war with all of its associated horrors really put dealing with this on the back burner at the time. I also treated victims of land mines- many of them women and children who were the ones sent out to collect water, firewood or to heard their livestocks. I also had close workmates who nearly died and lost their legs because their vehicle hit these land mines. One survived his injury and worked with Diana when she took up this cause to fight for a global ban of such weapons. These weapons are meant for war, but they continue to remained hidden underground long after the war ended waiting to harm future generations.

I guess it’s somewhat full circle for me to see Harry, and now Meghan, there using their position to help injured and disabled service personnel. I was a civilian and not a military personnel, but I worked alongside them. My patients were mostly civilians, but I also treated UN soldiers. So yes, this one sends a pang through the heart.

She avoids flash by way of big statement jewelry to bring attention to the nominees and their efforts rather than to herself. She clearly knows people and appropriate behavior for significant events, then proceeds accordingly in dress and demeanor. Meghan is a woman of compassion and understanding who continues to inspire as she brings awareness to important people and causes and inspires change. We could all do well to take a note from her playbook.

I'm a little divided on this outfit myself. I love the look from a distance - a classic, elegant look which suits Meghan to a tee. However, up close I find the fit/cut/shape of the skirt around her baby bump a little odd. It actually looks a little loose around the top. Love the shoes with it though!

  94. Harry looked outstanding! Meghan looked lovely, as well, but I'm not sure if that was the outfit for the baby bump. I know they, and apparently the world, are thrilled with the impending birth of their child, but I wish she would quit holding her stomach like she's trying to hold it in place.

    1. You're right she is thrilled and enjoying her first pregnancy. Plus we don't know how she is feeling physically. I remember I got many twinges of discomfort especially when my babies were active in the womb and my first reaction was to hold my belly. Of course everyone's pregnancy is unique. But it's sad that a mother can't nurture her unborn child without others taking offense.
