'We Are With You': Harry and Meghan Visit New Zealand House Following Christchurch Tragedy

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited New Zealand House in London this afternoon to pay tribute following the horrific tragedy in Christchurch.

Her Majesty asked the Duke and Duchess to represent the royal family as they were the last members to visit the country. Although Meghan has completed all her public engagements before the arrival of Baby Sussex next month, she is still taking meetings and I very much expected to see her pay her respects with Harry.

A joints statement from Harry, Meghan, William and Kate concluded with Kia kaha - a Māori phrase used by the people of New Zealand, meaning stay strong. "Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the people who lost their lives in the devastating attack in Christchurch. We have all been fortunate to spend time in Christchurch and have felt the warm, open-hearted and generous spirit that is core to its remarkable people. No person should ever have to fear attending a sacred place of worship. This senseless attack is an affront to the people of Christchurch and New Zealand, and the broader Muslim community. It is a horrifying assault on a way of life that embodies decency, community, and friendship. We know that from this devastation and deep mourning, the people of New Zealand will unite to show that such evil can never defeat compassion and tolerance. We send our thoughts and prayers to everyone in New Zealand today. Kia Kaha."

They were greeted with a traditional Hongi from New Zealand's High Commissioner Jerry Mateparae. "

Meghan laid a bunch of flowers featuring hawthorn and lily of the valley.

Harry laid white roses, white veronica, lisianthus and fern.

Reporter Emily Andrews shared photos of the flowers.

It was likely very important to Harry and Meghan to be there not only in their capacity as Commonwealth ambassadors, but as a mark of respect following the unforgettable reception they received in New Zealand. Day after day reporters commented on the warmth and hospitality the royal couple received there.

The couple meeting locals in Wellington during the tour.

On Friday, fifty people lost their lives during two consecutive terrorist shootings at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch. The ages of those killed ranged from 2 to 71. An additional fifty people were injured, with several remaining in a serious condition.

Thousands came together at vigils to show their support and solidarity for Christchurch.

In a time of unimaginable tragedy, the strength, compassion and bravery of the people of New Zealand has been a shining light. These qualities have been exemplified by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Sky News reports:

'The Kiwis know their prime minister has become a global symbol of healing in the aftermath of the Christchurch attacks. But just 17 months into her premiership, Ardern is now a figure of hope for a country in strife. Whatever their political affiliation, New Zealanders are united in respect for her leadership. In gestures big and small, she has demonstrated a human touch to dealing with hatred.
When families of the victims encountered problems, she sped up processing of visas for the overseas relatives and promised funeral costs would be covered by the government.'

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade shared this video. "We utterly reject the ideology that led to this horrific attack on people at prayer. We are grateful for the show of solidarity and support pouring in from around the world, including from our friends in Islamic nations."

In a moving speech today, the Prime Minister addressed parliament and said: "Mr Speaker the 15th of March will now forever be a day etched in our collective memories. On a quiet Friday afternoon a man stormed into a place of peaceful worship and took away the lives of 50 people. That quiet Friday afternoon has become our darkest of days. But for the families, it was more than that. It was the day that the simple act of prayer – of practising their Muslim faith and religion – led to the loss of their loved ones lives. Those loved ones, were brothers, daughters, fathers and children. They were New Zealanders. They are us. And because they are us, we, as a nation, we mourn them. We feel a huge duty of care to them. And Mr Speaker, we have so much we feel the need to say and to do."

The Duke and Duchess praised the outstanding leadership PM Ardern has shown.

Harry and Meghan met staff from the High Commission. Meghan told them she was "just devastated" by the atrocity.

More from the Mail Online:

Meghan said 'we are with you', adding she was 'just devastated' by the atrocity, as she cradled her baby bump. Harry said 'it's just very sad' as he asked about their connections to Christchurch.
Sir Jerry said: 'We are overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of support we've received from across the UK. 'Their Royal Highness's visit is reflective of this outpouring of support and it was wonderful to welcome them to New Zealand House.'

The Duke and Duchess signed the book of condolences. Meghan wrote "Our deepest condolences...we are with you". Harry wrote the Māori word Arohanui which means "with deep affection".

A video from the poignant visit.

Fittingly, Meghan accessorised with the Boh Runga earrings PM Ardern gifted her.

The Discologo stud earrings feature the native Miromiro feather, reworked into a kiss motif. In Māori mythology the Miromiro feather was a magic token of devotion that would bring loved ones back to you. Meghan and PM Ardern got along incredibly well during the tour and the Duchess was delighted to host her at Kensington Palace in January.

Given the incredibly sensitive nature of today's events, we'll keep the fashion details brief. The Duchess wore a black coat with embellished shoulder detail. Meghan's Mirror suggests it's a bespoke Gucci piece as it features their distinctive tiger buttons.

Meghan wore the Aquazzura Savoy pumps and carried the Gucci Broadway clutch (with thanks to What Meghan Wore).

For those wishing to sign the book of condolences in London, you can do so until Thursday evening. I know I speak for all of us when I say, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the people of New Zealand.

  6. I am impressed that MM can kneel at this stage of her pregnancy! I am glad she's on maternity leave for these last few weeks before the baby's arrival. I have been concerned that she's working too much. All of those hours on her feet and in those heels can not be very comfortable! I know Meghan has a strong work ethic and wants to do her share for the RF, but now it's time for her to relax, rest, and get ready for their new baby.

    2. I love Meghan, but lets not exaggerate here. Millions of women around the world work up to their due date. and these are actual 8 hour jobs, often in difficult conditions.

      Delete
    3. I’m Meghan’s fan and think she’s great, but two hours a day twice a week is really not strenuous work. And the heels are her choice, no one is forcing her to wear them.

      Delete
    4. She’s pregnant, not ill. Most women work full time up to their due date. And the high heels obviously don’t bother her, or she wouldn’t choose to wear them all the time.

    5. Meghan seems to have kept herself in great shape before and after getting pregnant. I wonder how she can kneel in those heels and get up without help but she's no doubt very limber and strong from her workouts. Unlike myself, she has great self-control and takes good care of her body. :)

    6. I love Meghan ad well. But she now has a life of immense privilege that millions of women all over the world do not have who work right up until they go into hospital as they cannot afford to take maternity leave 1 month early.

      Let's keep things in perspective!

    7. Heels or no heels, maternity leave or no maternity leave I would not be able to squat like that and get back up at that stage in my pregnancy! :)

    8. Meghan looks wonderful representing the royal family with Harry for a truly horrible reason. The world mourns with them. As mentioned above expecting a baby is not an illness. Departing from work duties is yet another "royal" tradition that is considered the norm even though it is 2019! William Vintage has a new fan in Meghan. Visiting the site one can absolutely pick out the fashion that may appear much to our delight on Meghan. Many of the coats bring us back to the days of Audrey Hepburn's style and all work well for one who is expecting. Amal Clooney can take credit for sharing her great fashion finds at William Vintage.

    9. Please let’s not exaggerate. Most women in the world have to work up until their due date and a large portion of those in physically demanding and on your feet jobs. Meghan’s “job” is nothing of the sort. I think she’s wonderful at it don’t get me wrong. But a few hours a week with immense support is not even close to working too hard as it compares to the experience of most Women. I will always be more concerned for the nurse or teacher or domestic worker than a wealthy duchess. I believe Meghan would too.

    10. A lot of women I work with will work until they pop so they can take all their maternity leave with their baby vs. sitting home waiting. I'm most impressed with the fact that she can kneel with that belly in heels

    11. While I'm glad to know that Meghan is able to have maternity leave and spend these next weeks moving to Frogmore, resting, and preparing for their baby's birth, I am sure that she would be one of the first to mention how deeply fortunate she is to be able to have this time off and to be able to afford to take time off. So many mothers cannot and maternity leave is a major financial challenge.

As far as her wearing heels this far along in pregnancy. That is her choice and I do not have any sympathy with that decision. She could choose more comfortable and healthier shoes to wear for her engagements. Seraphine actually makes a selection of ballet flats for pregnant women (that have been designed by an orthopedist to be supportive of the foot and help with swelling and fatigue throughout pregnancy and beyond). As a physical therapist, I have seen so many women whose feet will forever be damaged from years of wearing high heeled shoes. Most of them have to have surgery to correct the host of problems heels cause, and even with that intervention, they will continue to have foot issues. I will never be able to support any woman's decision to wear high heels, and I'm grateful that I learned from my own grandmother's many foot problems never to wear them myself.

      Delete
    12. I'm due April 18th and am still working fulltime, 8 hours a day. When I come home, my ankles are really swollen. I am not as flexible in sitting down and getting up as she is, but then I didn't practice any yoga before or during this pregnancy. That, and she having more rest/spare time than I have with also a toddler around, probably help to keep energized and flexible. If I had her opportunities, I would work less too now! I hope she enjoys these last weeks as much as she can.

But then my thoughts went to my last connection to New Zealand was the visit by Meghan and Harry and how they seemed to strike a natural friendship with the prime minister. I’m glad they were able to represent the royal family and pay their respects. And glad to see Meghan step out of her maternity leave for such an important appreance. She looks stunning, but still appropriately somber for such a sad occasion. And glad to see her wearing the earrings that were gifted by the PM. 8. I have to be honest that I almost wrote that as an American, I have become used to mass shootings, like violence on TV dulls your senses. School shootings are the saddest things, but I now think, "Oh, another one." I don't know the statistics, but we are a large country and have what seems like a lot of shooter events, whether it is an angry ex-employee, an angry ex-spouse, a horribly misguided child, a terrorist, or just a mentally ill person. I don't think anyone is saying that these occur because we are American, but rather than they occur in America.

Umm, We here in the US have experienced way too many mass shootings-Columbine, Aurora, Sandy Hook, Virginai Tech, Pulse nightclub, Las Vegas, Tennessee church, Texas church, Charleston church, Pittsburgh synagogue and more. We are all too familiar with them.

      Delete
    10. Have to add that one of my jobs is on a military medic journal, and the US has what is called the Stop The Bleed campaign because of the number of shooting events. Laypeople have started using anything they had available as a tourniquet and have saved lives. This is a campaign started by the previous White House and it was started because of the need to save people injured or shot in the public.

      Delete
    11. It is important that we never become desensitized to these horrific attacks. We can never normalize such tragedy and senseless loss of life. As an American, I worry deeply that my country is becoming desensitized to mass shootings, because they happen with unacceptable and unconscionable regularity. I heard a foreign news commentator say that when he heard there had been mass shooting, he assumed it took place in the US, and was surprised to learn that it occurred in New Zealand.
Such attacks should never happen anywhere, and it is devastating every time they do.

      Delete
    12. We really ARE used to mass shootings in America.
It's just that most people don't hear about them, because the targets are poor brown people, not nubile white women or white suburban children.
Having our politicians owned by the gun manufacturers is proving deadly.

      Delete
    13. US Granny, what??? The US leads the world in mass shootings, so much so it's barely reported anymore.

      Delete
    14. US Granny just because the town you live in hasn't had a mass shooting doesn't make it a universal American experience. As Anonymous at 18:53 has proven what you say simply isn't true. ln the past 20 years America is the country that has had by far the most mass shootings of any country in the world.

As someone who has personal experience with loosing a friend to a school mass shooting in the US l would respectfully ask that you do not invalidate the deaths of loved ones lost by trying to paint a false rosy picture.

      Delete
    15. I’m with you, Anonymous. US gun deaths are totally out of control. I am sure that as an American on the left, it was (and still is) something that concerned Meghan.

I want to add that I think the reference to religious fanatics making the world unsafe is clearly a coded reference to Muslims, which is deeply unkind and unfair given what Harry and Meghan were there to commemorate. We could also argue that US foreign policy in the Middle East has radicalised extremists. Let’s not stigmatise mental health either- the vast majority of people with mental health issues are nonviolent.

I don’t come to this blog to read about politics, but I felt like I should say something.

      Delete
    16. I hope religious fanatics meant just that -- people who use religion to somehow justify their desires. We certainly have non-Muslim religious fanatics in the US. I've read that Islam is the world's second most populous religion, so it's obvious that we cannot equate it with terror. Think of the horrors committed in the US south by good church-going people. It's always unfair to stereotype.

      Delete
    17. I absolutely agree that religious fanatics can be found in every single religion. It’s just that every time people say religious fanatics who make the world less safe through violence, it’s a reference to Muslims. This is an awful, very harmful stereotype and I hope we can all stand up and speak out against this kind of characterisation when we see it.

    18. USA Granny. I posted the anonymous post you replied to. Sadly, I would beg to differ. I worked at UCLA during a campus shooting and it was terrifying. It didn’t make national news because only two people were murdered. It didn’t have high enough death tolls. Then a few years later I had moved to Las Vegas where friend were at the largest mass shooting in US history. I do think it is commonplace in the US. My sister lives in Australia and I have had many discussion with her husband’s family and friends there how they changed laws after a major mass shooting and now New Zealand is doing the same. They can’t understand why it keeps happening repeatedly in the US and we do nothing to change it. I don’t know Meghan’s thoughts on gun violence, but I do know as an American, that it is an all too common occurrence that affects most Americans in some way.

My two cents: there is only one world, the one we share. It has been unsafe, there are all sorts of fanatics living in it. Sadly, some of the atrocities that make our world dangerous have been committed by very "literate" minds. Evil can be intelligent. And a lot of mentally ill people would not harm a fly.

I had delivered two smallish babies at the time, and thought I was going to burst. What's even more incredible, my own grandmother gave birth to one 14# baby, in 1904. 18. I am so so saddened by this hideous and deeply disturbing, cruel attack. I know we in the USA aren’t the only country to suffer from these attacks happening over and over, while we do nothing to stem the tide, but it feels like this type of attack on innocent children in school, worshippers in a temple is uniquely American. Here the news isn’t using the perpetrator’s name or any pictures of him. The names of the fallen, on the other hand will have their stories told when the time is right. I have not and will not read his “manifesto” but the little I have heard mentions our current president’s ideology (which in my opinion he doesn’t have, other than me me me) May have influenced the horrific crime he committed. For what it is worth, my thoughts are with the families and friends of the fallen.

  28. Bea @ 20:04. Thanks for researching the meaning of the flowers. I did wonder, since the bouquets had different flowers, if the intent, through the flowers, was to send specific messages, in addition to the condolence call and book signing.

  30. One of the victims spent his childhood years in my small town in the USA. The world is so small and we are all so connected, whether we realize it or not. I’m so tired of this kind of tragedy.

Harry and Meghan were the best places to make this visit and I’m sure they were eager to express their condolences, but it would be better if we didn’t have to see the royals making a visit like this every dang year. I have Kate and William in my minds eye too, as they made the same visit after the shooting in a Florida nightclub.

  31. Thank you Charlotte for covering such a horrific topic with grace. The tragedy is immense and my thoughts are with Kiwis who sound like such a lovely nation (although I haven't visited).

As much as I am aware that the fashion is not a centrepoint here, I cannot help but write my observation from today. Meghan clearly thought about her outfit, she chose (very touchingly) to wear the earrings from PM Jacinda Ardern. But I don't understand her other choices - new shoes (she owns several that could have been used), new clutch (she also owns several black clutches). I have mixed feelings about the coat, because I understand that not everything suits her these days. Still, we have thousands of dollars in new designer pieces worn today. Considering the nature of the event, I would prefer repeats and less pricey pieces. I do not normally criticise Meghan for wearing new and new designer pieces, I respect her taste and need to build a royal wardrobe, but today's choices did not hit the right note for me.

    1. I agree on the fashion front, Ella. For all we know Meghan could already have had all of these peices in her closet, but it doesn’t give the best visual to step out in new seemingly new top of the line designer clothes for this event. I understand wanting to look nice, but it seemed too much to me as well.

The flowers and condolences Harry and Meghan provided not only for themselves but on behalf of the royal family were lovely and genuine.

To those who were in the mosque and experienced this horror first hand and those in Christchurch and New Zealand as a whole who have had such horror and tragedy rock the safety and sercurity of a house of worship specifically and your community at large, I send love and heartfelt prayers for peace and healing. Evil is real in this world, and it is terrifying to come face to face with it as happened there. No person has the right to do this to others—I pray for the legal system to handle him with justice, for the one who did this to see his wrong and evil for what they are, and for all of Christchurch and New Zeland to come together in peace and love and support of each other that healing may come.

    2. Anon 7:12 you very diplomatically expressed your concern and in this circumstance, I would agree that a repeat would have been nice and it would have been completely understood. Very nice though to see Britain's representatives coming together to join others to show support in the aftermath of this horrible tragedy.

  32. The important things is that the Duke and Duchess' offered a lovely gesture by offering their condolences in person to the people of New Zealand, who suffered a horrific terrorist attack. Meghan looked appropriate for the occasion, that's all that matters. The fashion criticism can take a break for one day.

Anon 20 March 18.29 I quite agree with you , in such a terrible moment , who cares about what Meghan is wearing, new or recycled ? I definitely don’t ..... I care about the NZ people sufferings and sorrow , I care about a royal couple who had the best welcome from NZ and is in first line to share compassion and wishes , and I can say I care about a woman choosing to look her best as a proof of interest towards the people she is visiting . Besides, we should remember that it is quite usual in the US to look very well dressed for funeral and/or religious services .

    2. Thank you Linette for your comment. This is not the place to be critical of Meghan, it's about 50 people dead, many others injured who will need more surgeries later in. It's about the 2 policemen who caught that horrible man 21 minutes after the first 111 call and probably saved many more lives. Please remember the shock of the killings and that we are all shocked and saddened to our very core that this violence has happened here. It was good to see Harry and Meghan at New Zealand House paying their respects. A sweet touch that they both brought flowers to add to the others. I'm glad to see Meghan wore the Boh Runga earrings our Prime Minister gave her, a sweet personal touch. And I cried when I saw Harry had written something in Maori. It's been a hard week here. Thank you for the post Charlotte.

But, please, if you want to criticize Meghan - can you please leave it for another post?

Why leave it for another post? why not just don't ever post it? somehow (unfathomable) it is acceptable to criticize and demean when someone is doing something good for children or a charity. its a sad world we live in.

  33. I was thinking, just because we have not seen something before does not mean it is new. Meghan had a very extensive clothing, shoe, and handbag collection prior to marriage. I'll bet that she has shopped her closet frequently, especially in the accessories area. By the way, swing coats are the easiest things to wear when one is not pregnant, or when one is, because they are supposed to be big, and tent-like, and swing. It's a great silhouette for someone in late stages of pregnancy. I love a swing coat myself, and mine have taken me through several weight gains and losses. If Meghan had worn a coat previously worn, but now doesn't button, another kind of criticism would have come her way. I thought it was interesting that Meghan and Harry each had their own flower offering and that the flowers were different. I sensed that their gestures were made with grace, respect, and were heartfelt.

  36. Meghan and Harry did a wonderful job of representing the Queen and paying their respects to the people impacted by the shooting and to all the people of New Zealand. I have a friend who lives in New Zealand who was totally stunned by the savagery of it. As an American, I don't believe we have become accustomed to mass shootings but I do think we have become very aware of how easily it can happen - my kids' elementary and middle schools have regular active shooter drills, which is a sad commentary on how life is now, but at least there is some thought on how best to protect them. When my 8 y/o was in preschool the school had a lock down because not to far away from it a man took his estranged wife hostage, killed her, had a shot out with the police and killed himself. But you can't let the fear of this happening again, anywhere, turn you into a prisoner of someone else's hate and violence. There are more good people in our world and yes, this was an act of hate and pure evil committed on innocents, I want and need to always believe that good will win out over evil.

  37. She looks elegant, radiant and beautiful. I am so sorry about all the hate and racism in the world and what the victims in NZ suffered just due to their religion and skin colour. Poor Meghan faces the same hatred and I hope security is stepped up around her with all these crazies in the world. Prayers for those in NZ affected by this tragedy thanks Charlotte for your hard work and dedication.

  39. What hit the right note for me was the Duke and Duchess of Sussex came for themselves, and on behalf of the Royal Family, to give sincere condolences to the people of New Zealand. As the Duchess is getting closer to delivering, I’m sure she is selecting what she feels is appropriate to wear. However, I also agree that fashion, on this post, at this time, is on the far far back burner as Charlotte also mentioned in her narrative. Thanks, Charlotte.

  40. There's another few aspects to Meghan's clothes -- we know (well, I do) she is not shallow, she is smart, and she is a very empathetic person, so I doubt she chose expense over meaning. She may have wanted to look very good out of respect for the victims, and she may have wanted to make sure she received media coverage.

I burnt out a long time ago on mass shootings -- always an attempt to be even worse than the previous one. They are all so awful, whether it's one person or fifty. There was one not too long ago at a Texas church, similar to this one. People worshiping make an easy target. It no longer horrifies me; it is just incredibly sad, as are so many things like the millions affected by war and famine today.

  41. The Duke and Duchess seem to be persons of compassion and empathy, striving to use their platforms and privilege to better the well-being of many. I have no doubt that the Duchesses clothing is expensive, but realistically, what else should she do? Always show up in recycled/bargain basement ensembles? She wears plenty of economical fashion. The Queen, with my utmost regard and respect, wears expensive clothing, at all times, as she should, even at events commemorating the most horrific of events. It seems as if the Queen requested the presence of Harry and Meghan at this event
I am so glad they were able to participate and respond. My compliments to them both.
Charlotte, you continue to have my utmost regard.

  42. I understand, of course, that this blog is dedicated to the Duchess. However, I cannot help but wonder why the expense of the Dukes'suits is not as roundly criticized. I suspect he may have more than one or two blue, gray, and black suits? In many tones and fabrics. Many jackets, trousers, shirts, etc ... Uniforms? They must be quite costly to maintain. Clean, tailor, etc.. he always looks stunning and au courant ...

Charlotte, how do you think we will first hear news of Meghan either going into labour or having had the baby? Will it be via the Kensington Palace Twitter, as they did when Kate went to hospital, or do the Sussexes have their own household Twitter account now? Do you think they will announce she's gone into labour or will they keep any news to themselves until the actual birth? Also, any word yet on where the birth will take place?

      Delete
    2. Excellent questions Pam. From what I've heard, it does seem Meghan intends to give birth at the Lindo Wing. It isn't clear whether they will do the photocall on the steps or release private photos afterwards instead. I understand it will be handled by the KP Twitter account. The exact plan in terms of how it will be announced remains completely under wraps. I do expect we'll hear details directly from the Palace within the next week, which should clarify all the points raised.

    4. I'm glad she changed her mind about the hospital. The Lindo Wing is better equipped than the place in Windsor as far as privacy and security. Someone must have thought of how difficult it would have been for that NHS hospital to take care of her needs being Meghan is a member of the royal family and Baby Sussex is going to be wildly popular globally.

I was in the "early-April" camp when we were expecting Louis, and I turned out to be wrong, but I will risk that again and say I think the baby will come earlier in April rather than later. I'm thinking April 10 - 15 and although I'm hoping for a girl, I think it will be a boy.

    2. Bracketology is no longer an exact science. A few underdogs come out on top and there goes the bracket. I remember the days when one could confidently fill in the brackets in ink. ;)

Actually, the same goes for royal babies. There is a lot of vagueness surrounding this birth, which heightens the mystery. Meghan will have been on maternity leave three weeks as of Monday. If she has followed Kate's pattern, we should see Baby Sussex by April 8-10.

Seriously, I completely understand the need to not share details. I was surprised, however, that KP has not even followed up Meghan's reported due-time remark during a walkabout with an official statement. Possibly because it was not accurate to begin with. This baby may not be a direct heir but the birth is a highly anticipated one--not just by family and fans of the Sussexes. I think it is entirely possible that the birth will be announced after the fact, once baby and Mum are safely home at Windsor. I doubt any Lindo steps appearances.

Of course, my royal baby brackets have been no more reliable than my March Madness brackets lately.

Henrietta? Harriet? Haha. I think Alice Eleanor would be nice. Alice is a family name. Eleanor a name of Queens with versions being popular with European royalty throughout the ages. This baby will be a Princess, no matter her official title.

  47. I am going to out on a limb and say....twins! Born on April 21st, the Queen's actual birthday.
At least one will be a girl. Meghan said in an interview long ago that she bought herself a Cartier tank watch, and had it engraved, "To MM from MM", and that she would one day pass it down to her daughter. I think that their kids won't get titles until Charles becomes King, so they may use "Mountbatten-Windsor" as a surname, not Sussex. (Especially because their childhood home will be Windsor.) So, how about "Mary Mountbatten-Windsor"? Mary is a royal name, with universal appeal, and one perhaps with extra meaning for Meghan from her Catholic school upbringing. With apologies to anyone with the name, it is not super modern however, in the way that some of the cousins' names are, like Mia, or Savannah. But it is beautiful and timeless.

    1. oh it's a good idea I forgot the history of the watch suddenly I forget the names Rose Alice and Audrey and I look rather for Michelle Mary or Maud

  48. Another possible "MM" name is Marguerite Mountbatten-Windsor. The first name was one of the Queen Mother's middle names. I think it is wild that Meghan shares a birthday with the Queen Mother. The name would indirectly honor the Queen and Prince Charles as well, as they, along with the whole family, were close to her (from all accounts anyway.)

  49. If the baby is a boy, one of the names might be "Antoine", after the author of Meghan's favorite book, The Little Prince. They could call the child Tony. He will be great pals with Prince Louis, and "Tony and Louie" have a nice ring to it!

  52. As we get closer to Meghan's due date I feel so thrilled that darling Harry is going to be a father. It's such a dream for him and I wouldn't be surprised if the babe gets William as one of his middle names. I also would be surprised if Diana is given as a first name because that name would carry a great weight for years to come. I imagine Meghan will choose something less royal for first names and use family names for middles. Just a thought. I'm just happy to meet Baby Sussex!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Pam, I like Theodora. What a good idea -- or Isadora. In the spirit of Isadora Duncan!

I had forgotten about the inscription in the watch; I wonder if Meghan has a baby "MM" name in mind or if it represents a French, perhaps, endearment? Or just a "little Meghan"?

I don't think the birth will be handled like those of George, Charlotte, and Louie; there seem to be 'business" decisions and "family" decisions. Business makes George more important than the other babies, but not to the family. So I'm leaning toward there not being a public display when they leave the hospital but rather some wonderful family photos later. I think H&M really don't want their child to be a prince or princess and probably have a lot of sympathy for
K&W. And I definitely think the name will not be Diana, as a first name.

OK -- I'm ready! Forget the second possible baby shower, getting the house ready, flying in Doria; I'm already tired of waiting.

I think the inscription on the watch referred to Meghan giving s gift to herself - a symbol of female empowerment, not needing it to come from man in order for it to have a sentiment inscribed on it. And she hoped to give to her daughter one day as a message to her to love and believe in herself. I don’t take it to mean she’s going to give her daughter a name with the initials MM.

    2. That is how I recall the anecdote, Pam. I believe she said she bought the watch with her first big pay check. This may have been from a post on The Tig--obviously before she met Harry. I imagine she has had a few inscribed mementoes from Harry since. ;)

  54. Greetings everyone,
Thank you Charlotte for your direct, respectful and responsible way of expressing the events that took place on 15 March 2019 in my home city of Christchurch, NZ.

I (my partner as well) were there that awful day, waiting for a friend who was inside the Al Noor Mosque - he was due to call once he was on his way. That call never came. Our friend lost his life that day, his family a husband, his child, a father.

Nothing could have prepared us for what has happened and there are very few words that can
express the profound silence that there is all around despite almost 16 days have gone by.

Harry and Meghan laying flowers at NZ House and being simple bouquets rather than the great lavish ones of state mean more to a breaking heart than all the grand gestures.

Harry and Meghan were loved when they were out here, so I was pleased to see them in their
own right. This showed care, consideration and empathy from two people who have always
worn their hearts on their sleeves.

Thank you all for those who have passed on their thoughts about these heart breaking
    events.

Keep care of yourselves, hold your loved ones a little tighter, reach out a hand to
a stranger and then you will be looking into the eyes of humanity.
