Harry and Meghan Launch Instagram Page, A Wellness Store Visit & Latest Updates!

Harry and Meghan on Instagram... It's Royal Baby month! With anticipation growing ahead of the royal arrival, we have plenty of news to discuss today. As hoped for, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have launched their own Instagram account. Click here to follow Sussex Royal on the social media platform.

In a personal message, the Duke and Duchess wrote: "Welcome to our official Instagram; we look forward to sharing the work that drives us, the causes we support, important announcements, and the opportunity to shine a light on key issues. We thank you for your support, and welcome you to @sussexroyal. - Harry & Meghan."

The couple are now officially under the Buckingham Palace umbrella and no longer a part of the Kensington Palace social media accounts, which will now be used solely for the Cambridges. KP shared the news on their Instagram page today.

More from The Telegraph:

'The Sussexes, whose staff are now based at Buckingham Palace, have set out a template for their future work with ten photographs and a welcome message for fans. The account has been created in time for the birth of Baby Sussex at the end of this month, with royal-watchers now expecting news and photographs to be posted on Instagram as the couple eschew an appearance outside the Lindo Wing.'

It's fantastic to see the couple using their own social media platform to share their work. It's launched in perfect time to make a very special announcement later this month :) I expect it's possible we'll see a Twitter account emerge in time, @SussexRoyal is already taken on Twitter, perhaps the Palace will contact the owner and purchase the handle or a slightly different username will be chosen. We now know where to keep an eye for the latest Sussex news.

Harry and Meghan Visit Kensington Wellness store... Harry and Meghan stepped out for a spot of retail therapy at Ilapothecary health store, just a ten-minute walk from Kensington Palace on Friday. The couple were seen holding hands as they departed. You can view photos on PopSugar's website..

'The Duke and Duchess, who are preparing to move into their new Windsor home this month, were pictured leaving the Ilapothecary store in London which is just a 10-minute walk from their cottage.
The happy couple, who reportedly spent two hours inside the store, were snapped walking hand in hand after viewing what the store has to offer. According to their website, their products are "infused with powerful natural ingredients, including British grown herbs with a long history of healing."
The couple are keeping a low profile whilst waiting for their baby to arrive and for the move to Windsor to be completed. Prince Harry's diary has slowed down to be near his wife in those final days before becoming a first-time father, but he will step out later this week with his father, the Prince of Wales, and his brother, Prince William, to attend the Our Planet premiere at Natural History Museum alongside Sir David Attenborough.'

The flagship Kensington store opened its doors in October. They offer nurturing products based on homeopathy, herbology and phyto-actives as well as treatments and therapies for modern life and healing workshops.

More from Ilapothecary "Our anti-inflammatories include Nature’s best, such as Arnica and Calendula, where these age-old solutions are mixed to phenomenal effect with vitamins, stem cells, and - most revolutionary of all - incredibly precious homeopathic filaments. These are distilled, sometimes for years, from powerful gem stones such as Amethyst and Granite, and even Pearls. No other brand has blended these varying healing ingredients to such profound effect. Packed with goodness, many of the resulting products are also dual purpose two-in-one fixers and all smell incredibly uplifting and clearing, with base notes of Rose Geranium, Blue Chamomile and wild grown Green Vetiver."

When it came to selecting a jacket for the outing, Meghan looked no further than Harry's closet. Below, Harry wearing the army green piece during a 2015 visit to Twickenham.

The Duchess wore the Sixteen Candles inspired Jake Ryan Women's Relaxed T-Shirt (with thanks to Meghan's Mirror). It retails for $23 at RedBubble.

I'm guessing Meghan is a big fan of the coming of age comedy starring Molly Ringwald and Michaell Schoeffling (as Jake Ryan).

Meghan's Fashion suggests the Duchess wore the Rag & Bone Jean maternity skinny jeans. Meghan's pair do appear to have the same patch back pockets. They are available at ShopBop.

And accessorised with her Jennifer Meyer Mummy Necklace.

#GlobalSussexBabyShower... During our last post, we chatted about an online fundraising initiative, #GlobalSussexBabyShower, organised in support of charities closest to Harry and Meghan's hearts. Since then, hundreds of donations have flooded in to the selected organisations, WellChild, Camfed and Mayhew, with many more sent to other causes all around the world. It's been truly astounding to see the royal community coming together to showcase the positive power of the royal community and social media. The endeavour has raised at least £25,000 thus far, with Camfed receiving over £14,000.

People reports:

'At Camfed, which works to alleviate poverty by getting young girls into longterm education, they received 268 donations totaling $11,710.47 – an astonishing 456 percent increase in donations compared to last month. A spokeswoman tells PEOPLE, “It’s been an extraordinary weekend; we spent all of it on social thanking people as individually as possible.”
She added that the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, which the Duchess of Sussex joined as Vice President on International Women’s Day, was providing “an incredible platform for the young women alumnae now leading the Campaign for Female Education and reaching the most excluded girls.”
“The Duchess’ call to action – to move beyond hashtags and donate to world-changing organisations – has come through loud and clear,  and generated such a warm, positive and energetic movement.”

The good news has reached the Palace. Omid Scobie writes:

'The efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by the Royal Household, which has been bowled over by the selfless gestures of fans. “The charities have all been in touch to share the news with Kensington Palace, who are hugely warmed by the fundraising efforts,” an aide tells BAZAAR. “It’s an incredibly thoughtful way to mark a special occasion.”

Organisations including Bristol based charity One25 have been blown away by the reaction. The charity specialises in enabling women to break free from street sex-work and other issues such as addiction. You will remember Meghan wrote messages of support on bananas during her visit. In terms of the difference they are making, the answer is in the statistics. Lat year, 47 women stopped street sex-working and 54 vulnerable women at risk were prevented from entering a life on the streets. Today they tweeted "The incredible #GlobalSussexBabyShower blessings continue and we are overwhelmed at your generosity! What a community of love and support you guys are! We've never seen anything quite like it!". If you would like to donate please click here.

I know several people had issues using the WellChild website over the weekend. They have set up a JustGiving page here which you can use to donate. The work they do is truly inspirational.

The Good Morning America video below includes footage from Mayhew. If you wish to donate to the animal charity please click here.

Daphne Dunne... We conclude the post on a sad note. When I look back at Harry and Meghan's Autumn tour, I'm reminded of the wonderful people they met along the way. One lady who captured all our hearts was Daphne Dunne. Daphne met Harry twice during his visits to Australia; he was was delighted to see her again in October and to introduce his wife. Meghan told Daphne "Hopefully next time we will have our little one with us".

Daphne, known as Prince Harry's favourite Aussie, celebrated her 99th birthday last month and of course, the couple sent her a card. "Dear Daphne, my wife and I send our warmest wishes to you on the occasion of your 99th birthday on Friday. We hope you have a wonderful celebration surrounded by family and friends and that you've managed to escape hospital."

I was terribly sorry to read Daphne passed away yesterday. ITV  reports:

'Ms Dunne had been in hospital for two months with pneumonia and her daughter, Michelle Haywood, confirmed her mother had passed away at the Sydney Adventist Hospital on Monday. The war widow had received a letter from Prince Harry and Meghan last week congratulating her on turning 99. Prince Harry had met Ms Dunne on a number of occasions when he visited Australia.
In the heart-warming moment outside Sydney's Opera House, Prince Harry embraced the 99-year-old after spotting her in the crowd. He told her: "I was looking for you earlier and hoped you’d be here. It’s so good to see you again.” The prince went to find his wife so the pair could meet and Ms Dunne congratulated the couple on their baby news, telling Meghan it was "just what Harry needs."
Her first husband, Lieutenant Albert Chowne, was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously. He died aged 25 during an attack on a Japanese machine gun post in Papua New Guinea.'

Daphne was an incredibly warm and kind woman and I know she touched both Harry and Meghan deeply.

I very much expect we'll see an update on Baby Sussex before the weekend. There's reports the couple will spend their first night at Frogmore Cottage this week - if that's the case a Windsor hospital is looking more likely.

Harry again strongly criticised social media and trolls - the day after going live with his own social media site. Those who think it doesn't matter what is said about people in the news because they don't pay attention to it...think again. They are human and take it to heart. The numbers of followers is impressive; let's just hope most of them are kind. I don't know how so many can be monitored adequately. He also spoke of the addictive potential of social media and gaming. He encouraged human interaction, which the YMCA offers with various programs and activities. This is a theme Kate has also emphasised while encouraging more outdoor activity and less screen time. William is campaigning against online bullying by working with tech leaders. It seems a coordinated effort.
There were also some charming photos of Harry with a tiny baby girl. That child was mesmerized by Harry. The response was mutual. That lad is so ready to be a dad.

Just a note regarding my above comment about Harry's YMCA appearance. Charlotte has kindly provided a video on her next post of the meeting between Harry and the baby girl I described in my comment above.

  2. My heart is sad because of the death of Madame Daphne, I imagine that of the Prince and his wife. I wish one of these days when baby Sussex will be able to travel, that they will go to Australia to put flowers on the grave of Daphne. If some on this site could stop reporting to us negative things or on the so-called competitions elsewhere about Harry, William and their wives. I'm very happy for the Sussex Instagram account, it's still very nice news. It's wonderful all these positivities that bring baby Sussex

  4. I totally understand their need for privacy upon the arrival of Baby Sussex but I am hoping the rumors are not true that they will share photos on their instagram account rather then a personal appearance with baby. It is so thrilling to see the royals in that first moment especially with a first birth. There excitement has always appeared contagious to me as if we know them personally.

Love the impact of the baby shower on such deserving charities, and excited to see a glimpse of Meghan. Rest in peace, Daphne - 99! She had an incredible journey. -op

I happened to see a collection on Hello online today that showed all of the British Royal parents who had a “photo-op” of sorts leaving the hospital with their newborn. While there were pictures of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips with both Peter and Zara, they were more along the lines of getting to the car than posing for a picture😁. Other than that, Charles and Diana, Andrew and Sarah, Edward and Sophie, and William and Catherine all had posed pictures outside of the hospital for each of their children—although not all were at the Lido Wing. I don’t think this indicates one way or the other what Harry and Meghan will decide, but pretty much every “working royal” has had some type of picture taken as they leave. Prior to these, births were typically home births, so that removed both the opportunity and the demand.

      Time will tell!

    5. As much as I love seeing the babies outside the hospital, I think it’s pretty horrifying that the standard is for a brand new exhausted, sore mother to put on makeup and heels hours after birth for a photocall. It’s unrealistic and ridiculous.

    6. Dear Daphne she was on TV from her hospital bed recently celebrating her 99th birthday what a trooper she was bless her. I hope we get a little glimpse of the new baby 👶🏻 as we did when Anne, Andrew & Edward took their new babies home from hospital & they weren’t in the direct line either 🤞🏻

    7. Penny, I couldn’t agree more. That’s one traditional I’d love to see tossed out the window.

    8. It doesn't seem very kind to the mom. Meghan may be a bit rattled by her friend Serena's experience, so knowing that you can have privacy afterward until you're ready to be photographed seems like a nice thing to do. Kate makes it look easy, but I'm sure it's not.

I remember the crowds waiting for Kate with George, although I don't remember if they were as large for Charlotte and Louie. My guess is that M&H consider this more of a private event.

      Delete
    9. I'm sure they will do what's best for them & it will be very exciting to welcome Baby Sussex for us all! Something that I've been noting, is that I'm seeing lots of comments like "it's not like this baby will be in line for the throne" (paraphrasing) but actually once Charles becomes King, Harry will be 5th & Baby Sussex will be 6th. Once William becomes King, Harry will be 4th & Baby Sussex 5th until George gets married & has a child. Baby Sussex will live most of it's life in the same proximity as Beatrice & Eugenie. I thought that was an interesting perspective once I realized that. So it will be very interesting to see how, if at all this effects it's styling & life?

      Delete
    10. What I like about the "day of" viewing is that we get to see the baby's face, so we really see them. I guess we've been spoiled by Kate.

Possibly when William becomes king, W&K's kids may have their own children within 5 to 10 years, so baby Sussex could go to as far as 14th! And if you believe the psychics, baby Sussex will have two siblings. :) I think H&M's kids will have a very nonroyal social circle, in addition to the younger cousins and second cousins.

    4. Depending on the week or even the day, Meghan will be having a home birth/deliver at the Lindo Wing/delivering at insert other location here and will be doing photos on steps after baby or releasing photos after the birth. Everyone has an opinion but nobody knows until BP (that feels weird to write) releases info. Personally, I don’t care what route they go. I just want a safe delivery for mom and baby. Everything else is just gravy.

  6. I'm so glad to hear that Harry and Meghan now have their own Instagram account. They could decide that will be their only social media page and forgo Twitter. I wouldn't blame them if they chose that route or if down the line they should even have to close the comment section on their Instagram account (if the negativity and bullying dialogue continues).

I have actually been working on a personal mental health Instagram account in the hope of increasing education and awareness on mental health issues.

I doubt they would have spent two hours inside of the store if secrecy was a priority. Perhaps a briefer visit but not one long enough for others to spread the word-especially with this being so close to KP. There are online sources for This type of thing that would keep them out of the public eye. I suspect Meghan was getting cabin fever. My husband took me fishing with him, just so I could get out of the house in the last few weeks. She spent so many years going about her business unnoted. Sometimes it helps just to do something familiar. I kinda doubt this was Harry's idea but I imagine it would be difficult to deny his wife this small excursion.

Yay, finally! I was hoping they'd get their own account. I also hope they do turn off the comments section -- I honestly haven't understood why KP hasn't ever done so.

I could see it going both ways, re: first appearance with the baby. Harry and Meghan are certainly warm and personable enough to make an appearance vs. sharing photos, but they're also probably taking into consideration the slew of negative backlash an appearance would likely unleash on Meghan. My guess is that she'll give birth somewhere in Windsor.

    1. Hi Becca! After much thought I think that Harry and Meghan won't make any birth announcements until after the baby is born and maybe even not until all 3 are back home. My thoughts on this 2 fold...1) Baby Sussex is not a direct heir and once the Cambridge children have their kids, Baby Sussex will fall even farther from the throne; 2) I had hoped that Meghan would have a calming influence on Harry in terms of dealing with the British press and indeed I think we were seeing some progress immediately after their wedding. However, a few short months after the wedding saw an onslaught of vicious, cruel and unending reports of Meghan's supposed behavior, the British press also catered to her horrible family giving them as much air time as possible to slam her right and left. While Meghan has continued to be polite with reporters and photographers covering her engagements, I think that both her and Harry are done giving the British press one drop more than they absolutely have to. I foresee that going forward, all announcements, photos and such will be released only through their own social media and not through the press. While as a fan I'll miss seeing them on the steps of whatever hospital they choose, also as a fan I completely support them if they decide to bypass the press altogether.

    2. The comments thing is a tricky situation. Let’s say Sussexroyal is the only royal account that turns the comments off, it would seems like they are not willing to allow any criticism - because nobody turns comments off because of too much complements. And I know that is not what it is about, but it would seem that way. It is the same reason why they didn’t want to sensor the comments at first. As a private person you are free to decide what you want to entertain on your SM, but statefunded public figures and sensoring does not go well together. It would be interesting to see how they play this in the future.

  18. Such a shame about Daphne, but she did live a very long life. Just yesterday, I saw the video of her being read the birthday note from Harry and Meghan, and her complete delight at hearing from them. Rest in peace, dear lady!

I wouldn't blame the Sussexes for avoiding the media circus that other royal moms have had to go through. The Lindo Wing watch for Prince George was utterly ridiculous! I hope that Harry and Meghan opt for a more sensible method by simply introducing their baby via glowing pictures of the happy parents -- and probably grandparents, too -- and Baby Sussex on their Instagram. I have concerns about exposing a newborn to a pack of photographers like that, anyway, with so many measles epidemics around the world right now, and photographers being a particularly mobile bunch. The baby's health and safety has to come first, so however they decide to introduce us to him/her/them is fine by me. I'm just so happy for them!

And it is simply wonderful how many people are responding to the virtual baby shower! That's such a generous way to recognize the causes near and dear to Harry and Meghan's hearts and share the love with organizations who can always use more assistance. Whoever had that idea, it was a truly brilliant one! I'll be donating tomorrow, when the budget permits.

All in all, this is a great time to be a royal-watcher!

So I have done a scary amount of internet stalking on him, and he did a couple more movies in the early 90's (I highly recommend Wild Hearts Can't be Broken), and for some inexplicable reason, was no longer in demand as an actor. 21. Charlotte,

In the run up to Baby Sussex’s arrival, please consider doing a post on birth in the UK for those of us outside of the UK and unfamiliar with the NHS process. You might answer the following questions and other readers might add their own? You might also consider differentiating where it might be different for the normal citizen versus a more well-known (and wealthier) patient.

Does the same midwife/midwives that monitor the pregnancy present for the birth? Are midwives randomly assigned when a patient arrives for a birth?

Do patients decide who they want as their midwife?

In Meghan’s case, does the same midwife go with her whether she decides to give birth in London v. Windsor? Or are the midwives only licensed (or whatever the equivalent is) to serve at particular hospital or birth center?

When there is a famous patient, do the hospital and medical professionals have further non-disclosure agreements (or equivalent) for all persons involved in their care prior to providing care? I am just wondering if the standard of privacy is the same for all patients or if the care providers for famous patients are required to sign additional legal documents to preserve the privacy of their more well-known patients.

I recall that Kate had the same midwife for George and Charlotte’s births. Is that a normal/typical experience for women in the UK?

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

    1. Under the British healthcare system, it is general practice to use lower paid midwives for births than actual medical doctors. In the royal family, there is a royal ob/gyn to over see the pregnancy/delivery, but royals often privately employ a midwife, almost like a pregnancy nurse, to be there for the expectant mother during the course of the pregnancy; the actual baby is then delivered by a certified doctor.

      Delete
    2. Kate's children were delivered by the midwife, the doctors were there just in case and to check the mom and baby after the delivery.

      Delete
    3. I have always wondered, considering the very short amount Kate spend in hospital with the last two babies, whether she might have had a midwife at home who monitored the early stages of labour at KP, so that she could only go to hospital for the final stages. If you are only a couple of minutes from the hospital and you can get a police escort if necessary, you could take that chance.

      Delete
    4. Annette New Zealand6 April 2019 at 01:50

If it is like New Zealand which mainly uses midwives for delivery, it is only if complications are likely that doctors actually deliver the baby. However older mothers like Meghan ( and me) are also advised to have specialist doctors there just in case and I'm sure that will apply to Meghan.

      Delete
    5. Meghan’s not even 6 months older than Kate. I see some people getting a bit carried away with Meghan’s age as it relates to her pregnancy. She’s in the 35-40 range (as Kate was when Louis was born in fact) which does start to increase SOME risks but if you are healthy and receive proper prenatal care the risk is almost negligible to a younger mother. Past 40 risks start to increase in severity and frequency. And this isn’t directed at you Annette I’ve just seen several comments on various sites about her age and supposed high risk pregnancy. She’s not that risky yet (id argue no different than Kate was last year at least in terms of age range, obviously they are different physical people, and I don’t remember the conversation coming up) and none of us know her medical state and if it has been deemed high risk or not.

  22. My hope is that Harry and Meghan have chosen whatever hospital is most comfortable for them, regardless of tradition. I do not want to see a front door appearance because it is not right to expect or want any woman to come out and face the media hours after giving birth. I felt the same way about Kate. It would be selfish to want such an appearance because it is not what is best for the mother and baby, or for mothers everywhere. No woman should feel pressure to look a certain way right after giving birth, and we need to work on alleviating the current pressure on postpartum mothers that already exists in our culture. Meghan and Harry deserve privacy and to feel that they can relax. It is important to remember that childbirth can be very unpredictable and one's birth plan may have to change depending on the circumstances (i.e. an emergency C-section). The process is taxing and stressful enough without the presence of the world's media outside hospital doors. It would be nice if the hospital information is not shared and if press and photographers are not permitted to camp out at any hospital near Windsor or at the Lindo Wing. I hope that Harry and Meghan choose to just release some photographs when they are ready to do so.

    1. I think they will end up doing the Lindo photo but I hope to see Meghan being comfortable in a tracksuit with her hair in her regular messy bun.
I think Kate felt pressured to look picture perfect since it was the first pictures of the future king, but Meghan can get away with just being a mom taking her baby home.
People should also keep in mind that Meghan might probably decide to stay at least one night, maybe even more, in hospital depending on how things go.

  25. I suppose the usual rules don't have to be followed with royalty, but it just occurred to me that in the US, doctors have privileges at certain hospitals. A doctor who is allowed to practice at a London hospital may not be allowed to practice at a Windsor hospital. Meghan's doctor(s) haven't even been "outed" yet, which is nice for them all. But usually a doctor has a say in where the baby is born. Just a thought.

I could be wrong about all this but what makes sense to me is:

      a. It isn't "required" of Kate to appear in a photo call after her babies' births, and certainly not in full makeup, blowout and heels. Maybe "expected" with George, as he is the heir, but I would think not required. However, knowing the public's interest in all of the children, and likely wanting to give the media a photo right away so they could go home and then not be bothered by them, they chose to appear for photos upon departure.

      b. Being that these photos would have a place in history and looked upon for centuries to come, and wanting to look her best, it was Kate's choice to have her hair and makeup done, wear a nice dress and shoes. (I do wish she had gone a slightly more casual route after Charlotte and Louis, however. Only because I think she always looks better dressed casually with more natural hair and makeup. Plus her pure joy is what made her especially beautiful that day).

      c. It was their choice to leave the hospital so soon after having Charlotte and Louis, understandably so for many reasons. However I'm sure she could have stayed longer and rested more if she'd wanted to or cared that much about getting dressed up so soon after giving birth (she stayed longer after having George - she left the evening of the day after his birth).

Yes, I'm sure she was exhausted and sore and would have preferred to just go out the back door in her sweats, but that's why she's such a class act. She did all three photo calls looking so relaxed and happy. My bet is that she appreciates being who she is (not Royal, but William's wife and mother to their children), so she just focuses on being happy and endures any negative side to her role with a positive attitude.

As for Meghan and Harry - my guess is that if they choose not to appear for photos, it will be for privacy reasons and not because Meghan doesn’t want the pressure of “having” to get dressed up for them. I get the impression that Meghan would not be bothered one bit by appearing less than perfect for any photos.

    5. Ivy, Kate has always had casual engagements not just since Louis was born. Actually, recently, her default casual outfit is a bit more dressy than the jeans, sneakers and Breton top that she used to pull out. Also, her default off duty clothing has always been very casual even since before she married William.

I'm sure she could have left the Lindo wing in jeans and sneakers if she wanted but she didn't want to. She is aware of who she is and who her children are, and the importance of those pbotographs from a historic perspective. Obviously, she wants to look a certain way.

    6. I agree with you Ivy. Something I'll never get behind either. I had straight-forward labors and births with my kids and that's the last thing I would have wanted. The unseen physicalities of childbirth are no joke. I get Kate's position in life and think she's awesome, but she is also human! I especially noticed her discomfort (albeit "hidden" with a smile) with Charlotte's introduction to the world. Man I felt for her. OUCH! But that's what she chose I hope it was her choice and she wasn't pressured. I personally hope Meghan doesn't feel she has to do this and that the right balance is found. Just my opinion of course, but I would be so happy for them if they got a couple days to themselves as a new family and made the announcement post-birth. Haha we'll see.

I agree, Anon 12:42, with everything you said. Kate chose to appear for those cameramen (and camera-women as well) and look the way she did because of her own awareness of the importance of her role. I find it hard to believe that there was any pressure or requirement to. And also I actually can get behind it because by doing so she has dispelled the perception that all women are a horrid mess after giving birth and should be hidden away from sight. I love the fact that she showed it's possible for a woman to look great so soon afterwards. Some women just "pop" the babies out without much of an effort. And if they've gone the natural childbirth route, then there are no drugs affecting them for hours afterwards.

Ivy, I agree she overdid it with Charlotte and Louis. I think that’s why we didn’t hear any criticism about it till those times. A simple dress, wedges and natural hair and makeup ss she wore after having George were perfect imo. I just don’t think she was pressured into it. The firm is also a family and I would think be cognizant of Kate’s needs as a mother first and foremost.

I don’t think there were any unrealistic expectations set. I know that is the criticism but I don’t think that’s actually happened. It’s not as if new mothers everywhere are now thinking they should feel up to parading around the hospital hallways in dress, heels and makeup hours after birth I think most people recognize the fact that Kate is Royal and that she doesn’t represent the average woman.

It is only the top level of security clearance that will be privy to the plan until it’s execution. At least six different hospital routes will be mapped out and planned for all contingencies. 2. I doubt Harry and Meghan are using homeopathic remedies to treat any illnesses - that would definitely be worrying, it seems - I don't know how to put it - but maybe they are using it for general wellness I guess??? Coming from a scientific background, there is no credible evidence to indicate homeopathic medicine is successful at treating or preventing illnesses, however, if natural remedies help a person FEEL well - that is a positive thing(especially mental well being). This is just my own perception and I respect that others will disagree, but I believe part of the reason some find homeopathic remedies effective is because of the placebo effect. As long as people aren't attempting to treat serious illnesses with homeopathic medicine, I don't think there really is an issue of people using them (as long as said medicine is not harmful in any way). This reminds me of a recent case that happened in Canada where the parents attempted to treat their child's illness with homeopathic medicine. However, their treatment clearly wasn't working, but by the time the child was brought to the hospital the infection had disseminated so far that it caused multiple organ failure leading to that child's death. Homeopathic medicine for general wellness is okay (IMO), but it is not a replacement for evidence based medicine. If you are seriously ill - go to a doctor, don't put your life at risk.

Maybe they were looking for soaps and lotions to stock the guest bathrooms. ;) I don't think we need to assume their focus was homeopathic remedies.

The fact is- a number of non-placebo FDA-approved medications had their roots in home remedies made from herbs and natural substances. Drug companies study folklore for possible drugs. There was a time that most families lived many miles from a physician. It was home remedies or nothing. In rural cultures and third-world countries even today homeopathic remedies is all that is available. The use of natural substances is a part of traditional Chinese medicine. I think part of the bad rep comes from their mis-use, as in the example you gave.
Since the couple reportedly did not emerge from the front door of the shop for two hours, I have fanticised that they went out the backdoor to an awaiting car and proceeded to another location. Maybe for a private visit to a doctor's office for a scan. Maybe they met a friend there who did not want the publicity of a visit to their home. And maybe I have been reading too many spy novels.;)

  32. As much as I enjoyed seeing Kate and William come out of the Lindo Wing with their babies, I'll be happy if Meghan and Harry do not come out to pose with their newborn. I always wondered why Kate's due date was announced in advance, as well as the hospital where she decided to give birth. Reporters and royal watchers camped outside the Lindo Wing for weeks. How can anyone expect a quiet, relaxing, peaceful birth knowing that the world is waiting? While it was generous of the future king and queen to show off their newborn future king (and prince and princess)to the world, I don't think Harry and Meghan feel the need to do so as Harry is not the future monarch. I'd love it if BP would announce when Meghan is in labor without giving the name of the hospital, then just put the announcement on the easel at the palace after the birth. M and H can leave the hospital quietly, or if last minute they decide to show off their newborn, an announcement can be made and reporters and royal watchers will rush to the hospital. I still think the Lindo Wing may be a choice for the delivery as Harry was born there and as a nod to Diana. And speaking of Diana, there are many who think the baby, if a girl, shouldn't be named for Diana. I have a different opinion. If Diana had passed away recently or was still living, it would be difficult for a child to grow up with that name. However, Diana has been gone for a generation. Those of us who remember her are getting older, and anyone under the age of 21 wasn't alive at time of her death. I think enough time has passed to have another Lady Diana in the world, and it would be a lovely gesture as Harry loved his mother so. Someone mentioned that Charles and Camilla would probably not like that reminder. Too bad. In my opinion, it is not wrong to honor one's mother by naming your child in her memory.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I habe to disagree on your Diana conclusion. The sheer fact that people still feel the need to constantly bring her up is proof enough. People still give Camilla a hard time (I mean she wasn’t married to Dians) or look desperately for clues how Wiliam and Harry (and their wives) honour her. The name still has a lot of baggage and I cannot see it used as first name for another 20 years.

    2. I agree with you Abby except I was not worried about the feelings of Charles or Camilla so much as those of the child. Would it be harder for Charles to tell his granddaughter "I love you, Diana"? It just doesn't seem worth it. I bet the next generation has some Dianas, though.

    3. C., I am hopeful that the Sussexes will keep their baby out of the public eye and let him or her grow up in privacy and with a sense of normalcy. If it is a girl named Diana, she wouldn't be living a public life until she was much older. By then, Harry's mother will have been gone for decades. Boy or girl, Diana or something else, I wish the Sussex family a lifetime of love and happiness.

  33. Abby,
I completely agree with your opinion about the "front door Lindo Wing" photo-op. I hope Harry and Meghan do not do that either, no matter which hospital they choose. I also agree with you that it would be better not to release the name of the hospital. It is insane and ridiculous for photographers to camp out in the front of a hospital. I have never liked that they've been allowed to do it. No postpartum mother should face that either.
A company placed an open letter to Meghan in the New York Times, asking her not to do the public photo-op. It is worth reading.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.adweek.com/brand-marketing/fridababy-asks-meghan-markle-to-skip-the-post-birth-photo-op-in-full-page-new-york-times-ad/amp/

We need to be honest about what childbirth physically and emotionally does to a woman. It is a brutal experience on the body. It doesn't matter that women have been having babies for centuries. It is still a very taxing, painful, and difficult experience. Meghan should not feel any pressure or duty to present herself and her baby to the world in a public photo-op. She and Harry deserve complete privacy.

    1. I agree. That is another concern I have as well. Given the racist, false, and bullying things some followers and press outlets have said over the last year, such concern is valid. If they did the public photo-op, there would also be the endless comparisons between Kate and Meghan's appearance post-birth. Why give either probability fuel to further negativity, unwarranted criticism, bullying, and racist views? Safety, security, and physical/emotional wellbeing should come first for Meghan, Harry, and their baby.

  35. I think people need to accept their decision wether it’s about no title for the baby or no photo op (and stop whining/making up ridiculous conspiracy theories). This child is not brought into the world to make for our entertainment. I actually don’t think we need to search for reasons why they don’t want the photo but more why should they want it? I don’t believe one second this photo makes a highly valued memory (same for Wiliam and Kate). They will have beautiful first pictures of their little family taken in private in the hospital. This photo is just for the public. It is well documented that wether Wiliam nor Harry are happy about the huge media interest in their life (and who can blame them) especially their private life. While Wiliam cannot shield his children completely, Harry has more options. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see much baby Sussex at all. Which will probably be the best for the child anyway. The right to privacy is priceless and I will be very happy if Baby Sussex can grow up as private as possible. And if Harry and Meghan decide that they will go a similar path as PAnne did with her children that’s absolutely fine. Her children seem to very happy and grounded indeed.
Maybe they take a note from Madeleine and just give a snapshot of them leaving the hospital? Or there will be no pictures at all? Or they decide to pose for pictures when leaving. Or we get a private photo taken Harry or Meghan or Kate or Charles or a professional photographer. The options are endless, Whatever they decide it will be fine.

Meghan has already promised to bring the baby to both Malta and Australia. I think it likely we will see the baby on the balcony for Trooping. There are bound to be many photos on IG, as one of their stated goals is to share things important to them. I think the point is that the couple decide when and how much to share. As C pointed out, they do have that choice.
I honestly believe if Kate had been the wife of a royal further down the line she, too, would have eschewed" the hospital step photos. She was dressed neatly in simple clothing-no elaborate do-dads. Take another look at her hair holding Louis. Not a poufy blow-out.Don't forget, she made no attempt to disguise her post birth figure, especially after George. No voluminous dress or coat such as Diana wore. That, to my mind, was a feminist statement as loud and clear as a refusal to appear at all.

  38. I imagine that there will be pictures of Baby Sussex. However, if we really think about the Cambridge babies, there were perhaps almost no pictures of the children as actual newborns, and George not again until he was a couple of months. Same with Charlotte, if I recall. So I don't think we should expect to see too much of newborn little Sussex, but I expect we'll see baby pictures. I don't recall seeing babies on the balcony at Trooping. It seems to me that two years might be about the age of first balcony appearances, and perhaps just for the children of an heir. Besides, Trooping is the Queen's birthday celebration, and newborns shouldn't appear to take focus away from Her Majesty. The big todo in front of the hospital probably incurs great security costs, and I imagine that is something best avoided. Hope Meghan has a safe delivery, and has peace and quiet to enjoy the new baby with family and friends for a good while after the birth.

    1. Anon 00:26 Charlotte has provided a blog archive. A quick check will verify that all three Cambridge children had newborn photos taken by Kate or, in George's case, by Kate's father within a few weeks of birth. This was in addition to the hospital step photos. Of course, there were christening photos. The are several other photos of each within the first year. I loved the ones with the older child cuddling the new baby but I think my favorite of the baby photos is Charlotte in that pink snow suit.

Harry first appeared on the balcony in Diana's arms at Trooping when he was around nine months old. He was born several months after the previous Trooping. Time will tell but I don't think the proud parents will be able to hold off until christening, usually at around three months old. I think there is a good chance that we'll see baby Sussex on the balcony come June 21.

  39. Thank you Charlotte for all the work you put into your blogs. Very much appreciated. I have been pleased to see the separation of the Cambridge and Sussex working lives. It seems a natural development. Never have understood why it caused so much comment and speculation. After all that is what happened with Charles and his sibblings. Prince Andrew and Sarah lived at Windsor after their marriage so precedent there too. Hopefully the people who dislike either Duchess will stop expending time and energy on something they dislike and the instagram accounts will be less horrid. And as an aside Meghan is not the first person of colour to marry into the Royal family. In 2004 Lady Davina Windsor married Gary Lewis a person of Maori descent. The children have some Maori names. Lady Davina is 30th in line to the throne.

  40. I completely agree that there's no need for Megan and Harry to do a Lindo wing appearance/photo op! Save both Kate and Meghan (and their husbands) from the comparisons! You can tell these women don't want to be constantly compared to each other and criticized (I mean what woman wants that) plus since the Sussex children aren't HRH they should not feel the pressure to do a public photo op! I hope the hospital info is kept private, the baby gender and time of birth is announced on the easel at Buckingham per tradition and they release a few Instagram photos in the days following the birth at their leisure. That's exactly what I did for my babies (not that I'm comparing myself to her in terms of importance!) I texted people several hours after the birth and sent photos when I felt up to it. No big groups of family waiting at the hospital waiting to welcome baby! Nothing wrong with that, of course, it was just important for me to have that time to bond with my husband and baby and focus on our new little family. Everyone else could wait! Whatever she does, I truly hope it is *her* decision. It must be difficult to tune out all the chatter and focus on her own needs but she has had practice doing this and I hope she continues to do it. They already love their little one so much and postpartum is such a precious and tender time I hope they get to enjoy it in privacy and rest (I say this at 26 weeks pregnant with my 4th baby!) So so excited for them and hopeful everything goes as smoothly as possible for their new little family!

    1. I have a vague recollection of the announcement of one of the Cambridge babies being held back a few hours. That may have been with George. After that, there were sister and then brother at home to consider. I think the explanation was to give the family some private time before the press onslaught. Of course, they were criticised for that delay.
Also, if baby Sussex arrives during the night (between 10PM and 6=8 AM) there will be no announcement until around 8AM, after HM is notified. I think it is time to forego that requirement. When that tradition started there was no 24 hour news cycle. Wake her up! That's what I say. HM can then have some warm milk or a sip of Dubonnet and go back to sleep.
As I have said, I truly believe the family will be back at Frogmore before any announcement is made. It seems the best plan all around to me.
I don't believe the easel at BP is done for all royal babies but I am not sure where the cutoff is. Makes me think I'd enjoy a post on royal traditions surrounding births and their history and evolution. Thank goodness there is no longer a requirement that the birth be personally witnessed by a hoard of officials gathered around the bedside. I think Harry would throw them out, anyway.

Actually, it is not just for press. Apparently, no one can be told before the Queen, other than those present at the birth. I don't see a rational purpose for that. Maybe there once was one. No need t o awaken her, really. I was being somewhat facetious. Just allow the parents to share their happy news freely and let her sleep.

    4. re 03:39--not only that, for some of HM's subjects, the middle of the night in London is mid-afternoon. I am sure they would be eager to hear the news, too. Right, Aussies and New Zealanders?

That is what a 24 hour news cycle means.

  41. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Instagram is the vehicle for the birth announcement. Meghan launched the cookbook via Instagram. Their Instagram says it will be used for major announcements. However, if they don't get those pictures out fast enough, the rabid press will crucify them, I'm sure.
BTW, did everyone see the adorable pictures of Harry doing a yoga pose with the little ballerinas, and the picture where he managed to make a three-month old smile at him (he just made a beeline for her)?

While I have no social media account and commenting here is the extent of my on-line participation, I think the separation of the social media account is smart. The two couples share the same followers and fans, but also have camps of followers who can be quite abusive on-line. Social Media connects people in good and bad ways, and is deliberately quite weak in curbing the violence and mayhem these platforms incubate. It’s still about making money after all.

I’m happy to see the donations ticked up for these charities as they are relied upon to fill in where the government social safety net fails. So hooray!

As to the baby news, well it’s a countdown to a healthy delivery for both mum and babe. I have some names in mind and I venture if Diana is used, Charles and Camilla will understand. It’d be a sign of moving forward with the next generation and reconciling the past with healthy healing. Besides these royals tend to have 3-4 names. Why is that anyway?

  43. It is so interesting how we can all look at the same information, facts and events and come up with completely different conclusions and predictions.
Some people feel (guess) that the Sussexes will be even more protective of their baby’s privacy than the Cambridges and that we will only see BabySussex when it really can’t be helped, while on the other end of the scale others expect not only a Lindo Wing appearance but predict that BabySussex will make an appearance at the Trooping already.
Personally I find it difficult to predict, because I find the Sussexes are still finding their feet when it comes to the privacy things. In some aspects they are very open and willing to share and at other times they seem to resent giving even the smallest bit of information out. Only time will tell.
