A Surprise Meghan & Archie Appearance for Family Polo Day Out

It was a surprise appearance for the Duchess of Sussex and Baby Archie as the pair cheered on Harry and William for the Khun Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Memorial Polo Trophy at Billingbear Polo Club to cheer on William and Harry in the King Power Royal Charity Polo Day.

Archie's polo debut comes just days after his christening. Speaking of the christening, People reports
'"It was just very, very low-key," says a Windsor source. "You wouldn't have even known it was going on. It was all very well thought through."' Eight-week-old Archie looked very quiet and relaxed at his christening, and very much the same today. At one point he appeared to be sleeping as Meghan held him.

When they arrived, Meghan was seen chatting to Harry's longtime close friend, stockbroker and Sentebale ambassador Adam Bidwell.

With the exception of the Sentebale Polo Cup, William and Harry have markedly reduced their polo participation this summer. It was previously reported this was due to "family commitments" over the summer. Polo is very much a highlight of the royal summer calendar, and I do hope to see them continue to play in some capacity for quite a few years to come. It was quite the royal turnout with Kate, George, Charlotte and Louis also there.

George watching the match get underway with Meghan and Archie.

Cousin Louis also made his polo debut today :)

Today's match raised over £1 million for causes close to the princes' hearts. These organisations include African Parks, the English Schools Swimming Association, Fields in Trust, Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, the Household Cavalry Operational Casualties Fund, the Invictus Games Foundation, Irish Guards Appeal, Map Action, Mountain Rescue England and Wales, the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana, the Royal Marsden, RFU Injured Players Foundation, the Passage and the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust. William's team were victorious in the end.

The memorial cup honours Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha - aThai billionaire businessman and the founder, owner and chairman of King Power Duty Free. He was also the owner of Premier League football club Leicester City from 2010. He was awarded an honorary doctorate as a Doctor of Laws by the University of Leicester in 2016. Throughout his time in Leciester, he was described as a man "whose acts of generosity knew no limits". The Mirror reported: "Supporters were treated to free breakfasts, food, scarves, clappers, flags, free away travel and even free beer. he did anything he could to help enhance their experience. He celebrated his 60th birthday...and marked it by giving away 60 free season tickets to dedicated fans and throwing a party for young hospital patients at Leicester Royal Infirmary, whom he is also believed to have donated £1m to - that on top of another £1m donation to Leicester University’s medical department and a £2m injection towards a new children’s hospital. Srivaddhanaprabha quite simply changed Leicester for the better." Very sadly, he lost his life in a helicopter crash at Leicester City Football Club’s King Power Stadium.

Afterwards, Harry popped over to check on Meghan and Archie.

A short video from the match.

The Duchess wore the khaki green Rossetta V Neck Linen Midi Dress by Lisa Marie Fernandez (with many thanks to Caroline Parr).

The dress is described: "Lisa Marie Fernandez specialises in romantic resortwear staples, such as this khaki-green linen Rosetta dress. Crafted in the USA, the relaxed-fitting shape features a V-neckline and short sleeves, then is defined at the waist with an oversized tie."

Caroline also identified Meghan's sunglasses as a Stella McCartney pair.

It was a terrific surprise and it looks they all had a great day.

On another style note, Meghan's Fashion reports the Line coat Meghan for the engagement announcement is reduced from £390 to £198 in several colours on the Outnet UK's website.

Hello! reports we'll see Meghan at The Lion King premiere Sunday.

It is a good day indeed!!! Kate Meghan and kiddies at polo. I just want them to call each other for advice, have play dates, bake bread while lamenting royal quirks.....sigh. Time will tell.

    1. Sounds wonderful, Rita. But I don't know. You may be expecting too much. Many, many wives of brothers are not all that close even though they are friendly and cordial. Meghan and Kate seem very different to me, and Kate has a sister of her own in London with a little son very close to Louis's age.

    3. Wouldn't it be lover-ly? They could sing show tunes. That would not be such a stretch since Kate's done My Fair Lady and I believe Meghan has done at least one musical. ;)

    4. Rita, I'm with you on this one! I think despite their differences they also have a lot in common and so they can have a relationship "in the middle" - no, not the inseparable pair of best friends, but yes, two friendly relatives who are glad to see each other at a family event and sometimes maybe even catch up on the phone or invite each other for an afternoon/playdate.

I think their relationship is a marathon, not a sprint. I think they will get closer as the years roll by and im really hoping that their kids are the same way that W&H are with Zara and peter etc. this is a lifetime not just a movie.

  5. It's great to see Harry, Meghan and Archie but I just don't like this dress ... at all. It's kind of a drab color and fits very poorly on Meghan. It actually looks like a maternity dress. I know this is more a private day and Meghan is wearing what's comfortable but a more summery color would have been welcome.

Love seeing the two families together.

    1. I think it needs the belt to look less sack-ish. I like how it looks in the brand photo.

    2. Shes probably still nursing and feeling bigger than usual so just wanted to be comfortable. Shes on a private outing. Let's not criticize her where we have no business even looking. Just be grateful we are allowed a glimpse of the beautiful family enjoying their day together.

    3. That's one of my go-to summer colors. Does olive green have a season? This might be an East Coast of America city palette than looks odd to British flower print eyes. I doubt Meghan will ever embrace the Sloane Rangers style, but she'd fit right in here (Washington, DC) I would expect her to be wearing loose-fitting dresses still but this does seem a size too large on her. Maybe bought when she was very pregnant? I recall Kate wearing a billowing flowered sundress last summer after Louis was born. Lovely to see the family out today.

I so agree with you Ivy Lin, this dress looks like she is wearing a sack. not flattering at all. nice that she is out though.

    5. Yea, I don't like the dress either. It looks like a baggy, extra long scrub top. Maybe a belt would have helped, but it's very unflattering. However, the family looks happy, so that's all that ultimately matters. LEM

I have to agree. This dress is bad... and would still be bad with the belt. I totally understand her wanting to be comfortable, especially nursing and losing the baby weight. All of that aside- its just a bad dress and it doesn't fit her very well.

Ultimately, Meghan can and should wear whatever makes her happy- and she sure does look happy here. She looks relaxed, healthy, and just over the moon with that cute little bundle!!! And I love seeing her hair down like this. So summery! Great to have a day out with the whole family!

      Delete
    7. Not a fan of the dress either. Considering she just wore a snug fitting dress to a baseball game a week or so ago, this billowing tent dress is just swallowing her up.

    8. It maybe comfortable but would not be a good choice for breast feeding.

  11. I love the Polo outings. Everyone looks relaxed and happy. It's good to see them all together. They have enough haters;they don't need to hate each other. Hopefully time will heal any wounds. I like Kate's dress and Meghan's, although I wish she'd worn the belt, but she's still trying to lose the baby weight, so she's probably more comfortable minus the belt. Which is totally understandable.

Sometimes the abdominal muscles separate with the stress of pregnancy and childbirth, which allows the abdominal organs to pooch out. Whatever-I hope people will give Meghan a break. Her dress is actually both stylish and appropriate. Maybe the color is a bit drab but she has worn Olive and khaki a number of times. It is on her color wheel.

I love the belt but having a big bow and a baby and a baby blanket was probably more than she wanted. I thought it very brave of her to venture out with all the "big kids," and little Archie does look so little next to George, Charlotte, and Louis. This is another private day, so doesn’t make sense to criticize.

    3. I agree with that moratorium. Post-partum is a tough time for any mother. Personally, I think fashion criticism is superficial and judgmental anyway, especially in the way that most people do it. It is one thing to disagree with a choice of fashion by saying, "I would wear such and such", but it is another thing altogether to say "that person should wear this or that, they need a stylist, or this looks terrible on them." Every person has their own unique style and comfort zone with clothing. Meghan should not have to change her style or wear certain clothes to please others. She deserves to be herself, just like all of us do.

      Delete
    4. Thank you Mel!!! Absolutely!!

    5. Whew, am glad people are speaking up about this. Why judge a 2 month post-partum woman on how she dresses, when we know they are still adjusting to the new body changes. We all know women are sensitive this time.

I must be in the minority, but I rather like this dress on Meghan! It's breezy and a great color with her skin tone. I would prefer the belt on it, but maybe it was uncomfortable. Of course, we didn't get a full-length shot of just the dress, so maybe I wouldn't like it if I saw it completely.

So happy she and Archie showed up! Meghan and Kate both appeared very relaxed and seemed to be enjoying themselves.

  20. One of the (many) things I love about Meghan is that she shows real life: to wit, a tired, new, mother, looking slightly blank, wearing a wonderful dress that didn’t look as big in the mirror as it does in photographs. She’s off duty. Bless her.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The olive khaki color is really wonderful on the Duchess. She looks so comfortable, and Archie is adorable. If I were her, I'd want something that was loose enough so I could change positions, sit, stand, whatever, without worry, and also something that wouldn't show dribbles of baby spit etc. Good choice.

  22. I always knew Meghan was ambidextrous. She plays guitar with her left hand and now she is holding marvelous Archie with her left hand dominant. Wonderful looking family. Make God bless them always and that baby could not be more good looking.

    1. I think you've put your finger on it, Anonymous @23:32. I thought there was something different about the way Meghan was holding Archie, and it's because her left arm is cradling his head, rather than the right arm, which is probably what most of us would do. I like Meghan's dress, and it just reminded me that I have a summer dress in this olive colour and in a similar style. I'm going to haul it out of my closet and start wearing it again! Meghan's dress is really a classic, and has chosen what I think is a perfect style for a two-month postnatal body. She looks supremely comfortable, because there is not a single constricting line in that dress.

      Delete
    2. I'm right handed but always held my babies in my left arm/hand. That was to enable me to have my right dominant hand free to do things like open doors, carry a bag etc. I'd say that most right handed people would hold a baby in their left arm.

      Delete
    3. I am right handed but always held babies in my left to, as Anon 04:30 said, leave my dominant hand free. Interesting to think that left handed people do the same but opposite because I never thought of it. And I agree with Caroline in Monaco about how not liking a dress has nothing to do with not liking a person. I think this dress is super comfortable and the color is a good color for Meghan but, no, as far as I am concerned, it isn't fashionable. It's something someone would wear who is having up days and down days after having a major change happen to their body and their life. And good on her for turning up to support her husband's charity when she could be home with her feet up. Having stood in fields for equestrian events myself (not being someone who is particularly horsey) it can be really tiring.

    4. I have a question here. I know nothing about polo and my question will likely disclose my ignorance. But why does no one bring lawn chairs? Is it too hard to see the action whilst sitting? I have been curious about this for awhile!

I’m not wild about the voluminous dress, but I bet it’s comfy and cool for Meghan. This dress is right up her fashion alley - loose, breezy and fun. Kate of course looks great in the “Kate” dress. The style suits her well.

I feel some are being over sensitive, not liking a dress does not mean that someone does not like meghan etc etc. one can simply not like a dress. (it does look rather bad on her in my opinion) she did just wear skin tight dress to baseball and skin tight jeans and top to tennis so she must feel comfortable in that, and the tennis was off duty too. 26. The color is right in her favored palette, and she does seem to like flowy dress, so I can see what appealed to her about this dress, but I’m not a fan of the dress, even as modeled, partly because I personally hate linen clothing, which always ends up wrinkled and disheveled looking. It looks about two sizes too big on Meghan, but maybe she wore it previously when she was still pregnant. Perhaps Meghan wearing the tie belt would have helped make it look less like she was swimming in all that fabric, but I’m sure there’s a reason she chose to leave it off. I don’t begrudge Meghan’s wardrobe budget, but the price tag for this item seems nutty. Maybe high fashion is just a mystery to me, because I can’t imagine spending this much money on a dress, especially one that doesn’t seem to fit very well.

Oh well, seeing her snuggling with the baby is more important.

  31. Y’all like to talk about people wearing what they want and that women shouldn’t have to be sexy/pretty/attractive etc but if y’all don’t like a dress we have to hear a hundred comments about how it fits poorly or it doesn’t look right which is just code for it isn’t as sexy or attractive as I feel like I’m owed from this public figure.

If you aren’t going to live up to the standards you have for other people then don’t make the comment. If you feel like it would be unfair for someone to say to you or your daughter or wife, don’t make the comment.

You’re not being critical of the dress itself, you’re being critical of the way it fits her and you should really rethink why you want this woman that just gave birth to meet some kind of arbitrary standard for the way clothes should fit and how “attractive” they should be on her.

Let’s actually support women instead of just paying them lip service.

I wonder what shoes she is wearing I'm imagining her tan Sarah Flint flats, a matching tan belt would look nice with this dress if you wanted to smarten it up. Olive green looks great on Meghan and I don't think the dress is as horrific as so many are making it out to be. To me it looks comfy, breathable and non-restrictive. It's actually very "California". Perfect for someone still healing from birth and probably nursing. I love the gold-rimmed sunnies with it too. And her hair is looking lush! So what if the past two outings she wore more fitted clothing? Is she obligated to wear the same style every single day? Is she not allowed variety in her closet? Kudos to her for wearing what she likes especially on her private time.

  41. Lovely to see the Duchess with little Archie. The dress looks really nice with a belt. Not so good without, very baggy and shapeless.

Great family outing! They all look happy and relaxed. We all know that Meghan favours baggy clothes, this is not new. I think at times she has some abdo bloating, maybe today was one of those days, who knows. The colour is also perfect Meghan, so no surprises there. As far as holding baby Archie, I guess that’s up to her. I invested in a Baby Bjorn sling early on in motherhood, and I used it a lot, it was great. I hope Meghan does too, it would be perfect for polo outings!

I think it’s silly to critique the dress positive or negative. She’s a new mother who probably didn’t even decide till the time came whether or not she was going to go to the event. Enjoying a day out in beautiful weather with her baby and supporting her husband and the charities. It shouldn’t matter one bit what she’s wearing

    1. Exactly! And no one can even see the front of the dress because Archie is her constant companion/accessory. Why do people care so much about what she wears anyway? When I look at these pictures, I first think that they were taken by someone prying into family time then I see a loving mom. So nice to see her.

  45. Yikes! Meghan sure touched a nerve in many with her choice of dress.

    1. I prefer to rephrase that, Misty. There are many people who are incredibly touchy about anything pertaining to Meghan. She has been made a target. Meghan has not touched anything. She is being herself. Some folks love her, some could care less, and others choose to hate.

Though I avoid obvious click-bait like the plague, there are numerous headlines that pander all kinds of nonsense. Not only about Meghan, but she's getting the worst of the henpecking and hatred. Even the Queen is getting it. Two headlines I noted today were that she "snapped at" her lady-in-waiting or another that she had "reprimanded Beatrice."

In the first case, she simply asked her to hold her handbag while she took the shovel to plant a tree as she couldn't manage both. In the second, it was a scene with her grandchildren from a documentary. The pre-school Beatrice had stepped on HM's foot. Naturally, she said, "Ouch. That's my foot you're stepping on." Utterly innocuous stuff.

So much of what is aimed at Meghan is equally innocuous. But very, very unfortunately, some of it's vile. Worse, it's fed by the press and fanned by social media.

But as the Princess Royal once said about rumours and innuendo--that it's best not to say anything as anything said will only be twisted. (I paraphrase.)

I'm sure the knives will be out for the tennis and red carpet appearances coming up. If it weren't hateful, it would be so predictable as to be boring.

  46. Both Duchesses look good!

In my book Meghans look is close to summer perfection! Modern, relaxed and super comfy.

  49. Such happy photos...nice to see. I am thrilled to see her in a “normal” dress that I would wear especially if I had given birth just weeks before, this reminds me of the Megan we saw in the early days before the wedding. She started out wearing outfits that any working woman could see themselves wearing, but after the wedding and on tour, there were few ordinary looks and those were a tad dull. Really liked this look hope we will see more, tho not looking for paparazzi to stalk her.

  50. Meghan seems to be holding Archie the way she held her "bump." I wonder if the positioning is by design, maybe to position him at the level of her heartbeat or some other reasoning. Meghan doesn't seem like someone who would do things without great thought!

And I have also wondered why in the world people don't bring chairs? Kate's vehicle was filled to the brim -- but she has to sit on the ground. Seems like Meghan would have been more comfortable next to Kate if they had chairs!

And dress criticism -- I do like the dress but agree the still photos show it like a tent. If she wears this to Wimbledon or to The Lion King, I would criticize! This is her day off -- she can look however she wants. I got very tired of Kate's skinny jeans and striped top but appreciated what she was doing privately with her family when she wore it.

And more venting, if I may -- the inane comments about Meghan not wanting a camera 5 inches from her face at Wimbledon. I feel certain she was asking for privacy so her friends would not be uncomfortable being photographed over and over. Between the made-up reports and the meaningless reports, I hope M&H just continue to do what they want to do. I don't look for these stupid items; they just come up when I look at the real news.

  51. Allison –Here you have summed it up well; you do favor Meghan very much and you are one of the true fans. The man (grandfather) who took the “selfie” (claimed to be taking a selfie of the game) was actually in Meghan and friends face rudely. The jeans at Wimbledon may show she is not a conformist and ok excuse it for a July 4th day mood and a private gathering with her American friends (Either the media had been showing only the well -dressed Wimbledon audience all these years, or Meghan does do what she wants to do now and then (as a sense of freedom or in reaction to whatever). The dress here may express the timing, new baby’s first outing and her moods. It looks like a comfortable olive green loose dress ( a matter of test if others don’t like it. Members of her family are participants at an officially presented sport for charity. Ok up to there; it is when I look at the man the event honored, hesitated if she could have done better.

No human is perfect, and neither is she. There are real criticisms here and there ( not talking about the mindless, biased, envious trolls who compete with each other to post the worst comment on Meghan / DM commenters). Even Pierre Morgan’s comments and involvement going back and forth from very favorable, to getting over involved in interviewing her own family members, being “ghosted” by her to his latest rant of “ Go back…” is based on motivation and disappointment that he got ignored by her once her relationship got serious with PH.

There is one person I am inclined to respect and trust. Even if anyone may say he may have some motivation, it is beside the point. I read a biography about a decade back he wrote on Diana. He stayed printed in my mind as a professional with good intention, truthful, esteemed as well as humble ( he might have liked his boss, but likes and respected himself too / honest). Now and then he contributes to the Daily Mail on matters regarding Diana, family and Monarchy. Patrick Jepson as a the former assistant to Princess Diana obviously had been an insider and an experienced author who tried to sum up the overall outlook where others view Meghan, the couple’s standing and a reasonable advice. Sometimes it is tough love, whether it is or not. I agree with him the couple can use solidly good and professional assistants with the best interest of the couple ( not necessarily just yes people). I don’t post the link here; leave it for people to search for it if interested / posted July 12.

  52. By the way, regarding the criticism in how she carried the baby, immediate image may give that impression; what mattered was he was well supported around his neck and bottom. He is only two months old and to support his new baby body practically is what mattered. There are people who take one look and feast on the “gift” to tear it apart. He was napping at a relaxed state and she can only do much for his two months body. She supported his neck and bottom in fact totally.

  54. There is a lovely set of black and white photos I saw on tumbler of a young Audrey Hepburn holding her Baby boy Sean in July 1960. I encourage everyone to look them up. In one of the photos Audrey is holding Sean in much the same way Meghan holds Archie at the polo match. These women have so much in common. Both wives, mothers, actors, fashion icons and humanitarians. What is interesting to me is the difference in how the women will be viewed or judged through the filters of time, and our society. I doubt whether anyone at all would ever dared think Audrey looks awkward or is a "bad mother" much less comment on her that way. It saddens me that the time I live in and with all we have available to express ourselves so very many "news" outlets and individuals go there. All I see is beauty in both cases and I pray one day people will learn and leave poor Meghan alone. If one cannot say anything nice in this instance perhaps one should be reflecting on why that is.
