Duchess Meghan in Jason Wu for Star-Studded Lion King Premiere

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex walked the yellow carpet for the star-studded premiere of The Lion King in London this evening.

The appearance is one of several the Duchess is making during her maternity leave. Since Archie was born, we've seen Meghan at Trooping the Colour, Red Sox vs Yankees, Archie's christening, and two Wimbledon appearances in support of Serena Williams. Tonight's event marked a very special milestone for the Sussexes - their first movie premiere since their wedding.

The Lion King is a true favourite of Prince Harry. He has admitted to watching the Disney classic over twenty times. In December 2016, the Prince took his then-girlfriend Meghan to watch The Lion King on the West end for a pre-Christmas outing. No doubt it will be a firm favourite in the Sussex household as Archie grows up; his cousin Prince George is said to adore it too.

The premiere is in support of a worthy cause particularly close to Harry's heart. Buckingham Palace said: "The premiere is being held in support of the conservation and communities work of His Royal Highness through the Royal Foundation. The Duke of Sussex has taken a deep personal interest in frontline conservation projects that work to protect Africa's natural heritage and support both wildlife and local communities. On leaving the Army in 2015, His Royal Highness spent three months working on number of such projects in Namibia, Tanzania, South Africa and Botswana. The Duke of Sussex is President of African Parks and Patron of Rhino Conservation Botswana. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will undertake an official visit to South Africa this autumn at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The Duke of Sussex will visit Angola and Malawi at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and undertake a working visit to Botswana whilst in the region."

In celebration of the film’s release, the Walt Disney Company announced Protect the Pride, a global conservation campaign working with many conservation partners to raise awareness and support efforts to protect and recover the dwindling lion population across Africa. Since The Lion King was first released in theatres 25 years ago, half of Africa’s lions have disappeared. Lions face rising threats, such as poaching, loss of prey and destruction of habitat, however, research shows the lion population can recover.

The Royal Foundation said they are "excited" to support and be involved in the Protect the Pride campaign, alongside partners including the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund to find solutions that benefit people, communities and wildlife across Africa. The Palace added: "Through the work of the Duke of Sussex, the Royal Foundation is committed to advancing community conservation efforts across Africa and around the world, working with communities to ensure a sustainable future for the planet." Although, Harry and Meghan will be launching their own Foundation later this year, they still have commitments tied up in the Royal Foundation and it will be a process to make the transfer of Harry's projects over.

There was quite the reaction when they went over to chat to well-wishers.

As hoped for, Meghan met Beyoncé, greeting the superstar and her husband Jay Z. Rebecca English said Beyoncé "seemed genuinely emotional" about meeting Meghan and couldn't stop smiling.

More from the Mail Online:

‘We love you guys.’ Meghan then turned to introduce her husband, dressed in a dashing tuxe, who greeted Beyonce with a kiss on each cheek and Jay-Z with a handshake. ‘You’ve been rather busy,’ said Harry to Beyonce.
‘Congratulations on the birth of your baby,’ Jay-Z said to the prince, and nodded towards Meghan. ‘Wow that’s pretty intense.’ “And how are the twins? asked the prince, in reference to her children, Rumi and Sir, born in 2017. ‘They are not here. They don’t come on every trip,’ replied Beyonce. ‘We left them at home. They would loved to have been here.’
'The best advice I can give you, always find come time for yourself,’ said Jay-Z.'

At the BRIT Awards, Beyoncé and Jay Z offered a very public show of support to Meghan. Beyoncé later wrote on Instagram: "In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas. Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy."

The Duke and Duchess were delighted to chat with Elton John, the singer was a friend of Princess Diana and performed at Harry and Meghan's wedding last year. He said to Meghan: "I'm admiring your shoes."

The pair shared a hug and he whispered something into her ear. I imagine it was words of support for the Duchess. The reaction Harry and Meghan get wherever they go is overwhelmingly positive; the crowds are always huge and there's a real air of excitement when they arrive.

The couple met Evie and Valentina who presented them with flowers, a Simba toy and a book for Archie. They told the Mail Meghan was "delighted" with the gifts.

The extended video below includes footage of Harry and Meghan's meeting with Pharrell. At one point the artist said to Meghan " So happy for your union. Love is amazing. It's significant. We cheer you guys on". Meghan replied: "Thank you. They don't make it easy".

A very fun video on the royal visit.

The Duchess looked elegant in Little Black Dress by Jason Wu (with thanks to Christine).

The mesh-paneled, flared dress features a round neck, long sleeves, a fitted waist, a flared style, mid-calf length and a back button fastening. It's available in limited sizes at Farfetch.

The Duchess wore the eye-catching Aquazzura Portrait of a Lady pumps.

Meghan carried her Gucci Broadway clutch.

UPDATE: Lorraine Schwartz confirms Meghan's detachable earrings are hers.

It was a splendid evening and a treat to see so much great interaction between Harry, Meghan and all those they met.

Are you looking forward to seeing the new Lion King?

  1. I think this was a very nice choice. It’s chic, elegant and it skims her body.
This comment probably won’t get published, but as a former breastfeeding mother, I am mentally cringing at the strapless bust. Not that it doesn’t look good. It does, it looks sexy but not revealing, but anything tight like that (and it looks tight to keep everything in place) around my boobs caused me so much pain and clogs. She might not have that problem, she might not be breastfeeding (her choice) but I have PTSD over the drama my boobs caused lol!

    1. Still breastfeeding and agree completely. She looks lovely as always but at 2 months I wouldn’t have made it through the runtime of a movie in that dress and can’t even imagine wearing a strapless bra! Hopefully she has somewhere to escape to and pump

    2. Carrie I’m laughing so hard at this comment, because I understand! I found that I had to wear tight tops (or at least bras) because otherwise I’d leak everywhere. Talk about TMI’ 😬 but strapless?!?! I’m amazed because I’d be so self conscious!

Thank you for publishing about this topic, Charlotte. I agree, it looks like this dress is very tight already at the beginning of the evening, and I worry about leaks. At 2 months I had just started leaving the house for things like the supermarket, gym and longer pramwalks, but could not fit into anything like this. Whilst the dress is gorgeous, and this time the opposite of a tent, I now worry about comfort and milk stains, oh dear!!!!

    4. Every woman's body is different. She probably considered all the what-ifs and risks of wearing this dress. I think she looks classic and chic. While nursing 2 small babies I could fit into strapless stuff, but I'm small chested too.

  2. Beautiful as always. Let's not forget as well that she is only 2 months post partum. I looked far less put together when I was in that period!

  3. Harry and Meghan look so sweetly happy in all the photos I've seen. Delighted to see that. The dress is a miss for me, sadly. The bust looks squashed and while the cut is on point, I've never, personally, loved sheer. Meghan glows no matter what, of course, this just wasn't my cup of tea. -op

  9. I think this is on of the less flattering dresses we have seen on Meghan up to date.
On the other hand, it is an interesting and sophisticated design which I feel is Meghan's taste. I often feel as if she prefered the design itself to "being flattering" - she simply choses what she likes and not just what is the best for her skin/body type/hair etc. Mostly it looks wonderful anyway because she is naturally beautiful.

If one looks long enough and hard enough, fault can be found with anything and anyone.

  16. The Duchess looks very chic tonight. H&M look very happy to be at the premiere. I love Meghan's shoes, are they new? I can't tell. I really love the earrings, I just wish she would have styled her hair differently. I don't mind it up with this dress, I'm sure she wanted to focus on the sheer detail and the open back, but a different updo would have elevated the look more. I mean it is an evening event/movie premiere. I'm not sure if she doesn't have a personal hairstylist there. I can't imagine why not, but if she did it herself then good job DM.

  18. Charlotte, I have been following your blogs for years, but never really commented. Maybe I should have done that earlier, I really enjoy reading your pieces. But wow, this video of Meghan meeting Beyonce and Jay Z kind of made me emotional! I don't know if they have met before, but after their tremendous support earlier, it was so good to see the warmth between these people. I have read some nasty comments about Meghan over the last few days, and this was just heartwarming to see. And I think she looks really beautiful too.

  20. I think Anonymous @18:15 nailed it: chic, elegant, and skims the body, perfect for Meghan's currently recovering post-partum body. I think it was a great choice for the occasion. Meghan looks very "royal" and not like one of the stars. It was the perfect contrast to Beyonce, for example, and each woman was dressed perfectly for her role. I wish Meghan would have worn some blingier earrings, which always light up her face. Harry looked a worthy escort!

  21. She looks wonderful. To look like this two months after having a baby is incredible.

I often wonder how many of her critics have borne children. Unless you have given birth, you truly have no idea what being postpartum is like — physically and emotionally.

    1. Anon 20:18, I so agree. I have not had children and I can sympathize. I think she looks sexy and beautiful! When I saw the first photo, I thought Wow and I'm staying with that. And there is such love for her there. I like the length because it shows her legs and keeps from being something that's too big -- and everyone hates when it's too big. I agree with another poster that the earrings look like those she wore for Trooping. Very nice sparkle to them here!!1

  22. It's great to see Meghan back out for a glamorous affair. I think the design of the dress is wonderful for her. But I feel so badly that so often her clothes don't fit well. I wonder why she doesn't have a seamstress to make her clothes fit perfectly. Anyway, I love her, and I'm happy to see her happy, though looking tired of course, with a 2-month old baby to lose sleep over.

  25. There is no way those earrings are 1 carats total like the website says. Most likely they are Lorraine Schwartz convertible earrings she also wore to Trooping. Lorraine Schwartz did similar earrings for Taylor Swift recently.

    1. I went to website out of curiosity (firstly shocked at price) but I think total means both of them combined, no?

      Delete
    3. I agree with you, that is not just one carat total weight of diamonds in her ears! I don't think they were made by Nikos Koulis either. I hope you are right that they are by Lorraine Schwartz, I love her work.

    4. Shocked at price also.

    5. The earrings Meghan is wearing are more like 3 carats on each ear. Emerald cut is notorious for looking small per carat weight-- you can get a sense by googling emerald cut engagement ring carats.

      Delete
    6. Anon 01:13 that is why I started to wonder about ID, may not be 3 carats but at least 2 in each ear, they are big. Also maybe it is not diamonds but another clear stone or artificial diamond.

      Delete
    7. My thought is that they are 2 to 3 carats each and a gift from Harry. the other possibility is that Charles gives jewelry for each grandchild born. I think they are diamonds and not a birthstone, especially because she wore them to Trooping.

I don't like Jason Wu's designs and this is no exception. Good thought, poor execution. Regardless she is glowing, appears confident and happy. As somebody else eluded - that's the key. The thought of a strapless bra while breastfeeding has me scratching my head. Maybe she isn't? I don't see how it would have worked. I do love the connection between Harry and Meghan.

I'm looking forward to seeing The Lion King but admit to being a bit confused about the promos - the dark, serious photos - looks more like a mob drama than a live action cartoon.

    1. Very likely the bra is built into the bodice of the dress with boning. I have a black cocktail dress in an almost identical style, but with spaghetti straps, not mesh. No bra needed. Pockets for nursing pads perhaps, in Meghan's case. It's amazing what can be incorporated into garments.

  32. I love the dress, as I love almost everything she wears, but she seems to always miss on the size or cut of the outfits. Like at Wimbledon, the skirt was beautiful but not a good match with that blouse being so loose. Here, the dress is breathtaking, but on the top part it's squeezed. I know she is breastfeeding and I believe that's why she should have chosen something more comfortable.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Infact I admire her daring. It is a beautifully cut dress fitting her latest figure with an appealingly decent touch of see-through ( even a bit snag understandable / women wear clothes a bit tight when not even after child birth). She is presented very well / love everything which coordinated nicely including her hair and make up. She carried on nicely.

      Delete
    2. I agree- but want to point out: we don’t know if she is breastfeeding feeding. Some people assume she might, some don’t. With her being out without the baby we can only say she is probably not breastfeeding exclusively.
And it’s not our business anyway.
      C.

    3. How do you know she's not comfortable? This is just an assumption. Things aren't always as they appear. She is still postpartum and looks great.

  33. I am in love with meghan’s new earrings, her gorgeous heels and clutch. I just don’t care for this Jason Wu dress. It makes me feel uncomfortable just looking at it. I instantly feel that the fabric was stiff and tight. I know that she prefers solids, simplistic designs etc. but It’s not my favorite evening look for Meghan. I think the Oscar De La Renta bird dress was stunning on her but post party’s May haven’t worked.

I wish she would have paired with something slightly more playful. Such as this black and navy self portrait dress with leopard details. Still dark like Meg likes and plenty of coverage but with a little sparkle!

  40. Meghan’s earrings have a scalloped frame very unlike the frame on the style suggested. She could have make with some more bling, bigger ear rings may be ....
As someone said (sorry, I am not sure if it is C. On July 15th) if she is breastfeeding or not is not our concern, I would feel quite indiscreet to discuss that (as I hate the official announcements which are usually made about RF women getting into labour ), very intimate matters which concern only the close family IMO... let’s enjoy our Duchess , her work and her clothes, the loving looks she exchanges with Harry who, sometimes, seems not to realize yet he has her on his side for good, they both look like hitting the sky ....

I recall the many photographs of John Jr with JFK and Jackie as a baby and little boy, the photographs of John and Carolyn, and it is impossible not to think..."What might have been?"
I read this Washington Post article earlier today and thought I'd share it here, given Meghan's admiration for Carolyn.

  61. I like the dress a lot, but I don't think it fits her that well. And I know that her body is changing, but that makes the choice of this dress (with such an unforgiving fabric) even worse. Maybe going a size up would have helped? I also don't think the dress says "summer" but that could be me.
But all in all, she looks radiant and she is glowing.

  62. As many of you commented, the dress seems a bit too tight and we all know why.
I, personally love it. It's lenght, it's fabric, it's bright black color..and of course the accessoirises that are always on point with our duchess.
Who else is starting to dream about the African Tour? The engagements, the charities, the...dresses?

    1. Anon 13:49, Agree completely! And I feel terrible that she said how hard things were -- we all she means the continued stupid ugly comments based on nothing. It was a little heartbreaking actually. But when you have friends and new family who love you, things should be OK.

    2. Hi anon 17:44, I’m curious what comment by meghan you’re referring to? I probably missed it. Thanks!

    3. Anon 9:04 -- I was referring to her response to Pharrell saying, about their marriage, "They don't make it easy." It is in the blog above, under the photo of all the actors. I rather cheer her on for saying that. I know it's un-royal like to say anything, but she's been treated too badly. I think some people would like to run her out of Harry's life, which is just so shameful.

    4. Anon 17:26: thank you for your response, the mention of it above had slipped my attention. I completely agree with you, it’s so understandable (and so human) that she said that. I wish her all the best.

    5. Who is "they?" I think that is a reasonable question.

Thank you for that diplomatic first sentence, Anon 13:49. It is really all that needs to be said about that particular critique of her dress. Although we do not technically know the actual reason amongst at least several possible alternatives, it is, however, "enough said."
I hope her fans restrain their imaginings regarding the Africa trip. I agree: it would be great to see Meghan in a parade of outfits and engagements but I have seen what happens when the build-up does not match the reality. The fallout can get ugly. She very well may be along primarily as a supportive companion to her husband, whose schedule constitutes the bulk of the tour. The plan may be to add engagements for Meghan once both her status and Archie's are evaluated closer to the event. I believe something like this was done when Kate made tours to New York City and Scandinavia during pregnancies.

  64. That dress style and that fabric were never going to fit properly on a new mom. She’s lovely, the dress is fine, but the fit was doomed from the beginning. I really wish she was getting better advice.

  65. People understand she is a new mom. However she's always had fit issues ... even before pregnancy. I also find this dress to be super dour and winter-esque. More like something one would wear to a Christmas party than a summertime event. One can do minimalism without so much severity and darkness.

    1. It's a classic little black dress. Black is always in season the days.

  66. I love this dress and think the accessories were right on target, but it's true that the bodice just doesn't fit properly. She tends to have bodice issues because of her body shape, which of course she can't help, but that shape does mean that she needs to be attentive to proper fit when she buys ready-to-wear. It may be that she bought the dress pre-pregnancy and decided she'd lost just enough of the baby weight to get into it. Perhaps she should have waited a little longer? But as I said, I think the look in general is terrific. The shoes are to die for.

  67. I think they both look great! Meghan is always glowing. Her dress is beautiful. To be 2 months post-partum with her body changing by the day she looks stunning. I'm glad she dressed for herself and no one else. What ever makes her comfortable she should wear.
