The Christening of Archie Mountbatten-Windsor

Two months after his birth, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was baptised in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle this morning by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby. Are you ready for a darling look at the family of three?

The intimate christening reportedly saw less than twenty-five guests in attendance and included Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Meghan's mother Doria Ragland, Diana's sisters Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and the chosen godparents and their spouses. The ladies are all attired in tonal shades of white and pink.

The Queen was unable to attend due to "long standing" commitments at Sandringham; the monarch has had a particularly busy summer schedule thus far. The names of the godparents will be kept private "in keeping with their wishes", however, aides told several royal reporters they are all "genuine friends" who are private citizens and outside of the public eye. Ahead of the christening a source told People: "This is a beautiful milestone and they are excited to share it as a family first and then with the world." Shortly after the christening, two beautiful photographs were released by the couple. Taken by portrait and fashion photographer Chris Allerton in the Green Drawing Room and Rose Garden at Windsor Castle, they offered our first full look at Baby Archie since he was introduced at Windsor in early May.

Chris Allerton said:

"I am honoured to take the official photographs at the christening of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, and to once again, be part of such a special and joyous occasion for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex."

How adorable does this little man look?

The Mirror notes:

'Normally the godparents’ names would be among the christening details recorded in a parish church register that anyone could look at on request. But the tiny venue for Archie's ceremony, which is separate from St George’s Chapel where the Duke and Duchess married, is a ‘Royal Peculiar’. This means godparents will remain anonymous. In the past the Queen has kept baptism certificates for other royals secret, it is understood.'

The Telegraph reports:

'Other than senior members of the Royal Family, the guest list will not be announced. Names of godparents - described as all “genuine friends” rather than celebrities or public figures - will also remain a secret in line of the wishes of the couple and their friends, a source said.
Asked whether the names of godparents will eventually become part of the public record, in the same way as Archie’s birth certificate did in May, a spokesman for the Church of England said all baptisms must be registered and would normally be made public. “However the register to be used in this case is held privately by the royal household on behalf of the Crown and we understand that it has never complied with the usual requirement,” he said. The register will eventually become part of the Royal Archive, where it may be accessed by the historians of the future in decades to come.
Willow Crossley, the Cotswold florist known for her natural, rustic arrangements, is understood to be providing the flower arrangements, after impressing the couple with decorations for their Royal wedding evening event at Frogmore in May 2018.'

Harry and William's beloved childhood nanny Tiggy Pettifer was pictured arriving at Windsor Castle earlier today. Following Charles and Diana's separation, the boys were looked after by Tiggy, daughter of the late William and Shân Legge-Bourke, lady-in-waiting to the Princess Royal. She joined the Royal Family in 1993. A former nursery teacher, she was employed as assistant to Charles's private secretary, and later as an official companion to the princes. Interestingly she was not described as a nanny - instead known as a cross between 'a mentor and a big sister' for the princes, accompanying them on holidays and spending hours outdoors with them fishing, climbing and go-karting. Tiggy became very close to William and Harry and affectionately described them as "my babies". It would come as no surprise to learn Tiggy was top of Harry's godparent list.

Queen Victoria commissioned the small private chapel at Windsor Castle when she ascended to the throne.

During the terrible fire at Windsor Castle in 1992, the chapel was gutted. Hello! reports:

'The fire, which broke out on the Queen and Philip's 45th wedding anniversary on November 20 1992, started in the original 19th century private chapel when a workman's spotlight accidentally set a curtain alight. More than 200 firefighters tackled the flames, while staff rushed to remove precious works of art from the path of the fire - forming a human chain which included the Duke of York, who was in the castle at the time.
The original gothic chapel, which was added by Queen Victoria, was irreparablydamaged in the incident. It was later redesigned and relocated from the end of St George's Hall to the more practical position within the area of the old Holbein Room. The new chapel has room for just 30 people, with short rows of red-backed chairs, and is rectangular in shape, rather than the irregular shape of the original.'

A detailed painting of the interior of the chapel by Alexander Cresswell following the restoration.

Buckingham Palace shared details of the traditional christening ahead of the event this morning. The baptism took place in the Lily Font with water from the River Jordan.

The silver baptismal font which was commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840 after the birth of their first child, Victoria, Princess Royal. It was first used at the Princess Royal’s christening in 1841 and has been a feature of Royal christenings since then.

Archie wore a handmade replica of the royal christening robe, made by Angela Kelly, dressmaker to the Queen. The original Honiton lace and satin robe was last used in 2004, with Lady Louise Windsor being the last royal baby to wear the piece. After years of wear it had become too fragile to use, so in 2008 Her Majesty commissioned a replica. It features the same length skirt, elaborate collars and bow as its predecessor. The first baby to wear it was was James, Viscount Severn, son of the Earl and Countess of Wessex. As you can see it's pristine, with striking attention to detail.

More from the Royal Collection Trust:

'This is an exact replica of the original royal christening gown, commissioned by Queen Victoria and first used at the christening of her eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, in 1841. The original, made by Janet Sutherland, was made of Spitalfields silk and Honiton lace. It was worn by 62 royal babies including Princess Elizabeth at her christening held here at Buckingham Palace on 26 May 1926.'

Prince Louis wore the gown for his St James's Palace christening almost one year ago.

Members of the Choir of St George's Chapel, where Harry and Meghan were married, performed at today's ceremony. Windsor holds a very special place in Harry and Meghan's hearts. From the early days of their courtship to their wedding, to calling Frogmore Cottage at Windsor their home.

Their wedding portraits were also taken in the Green Drawing Room of Windsor Castle.

The Green Drawing Room was also ravaged by the 1992 fire, but by good fortune the contents had been removed beforehand. Each room was subsequently restored to its nineteenth-century appearance using the original designs supplied to George IV. This watercolour shows the Green Drawing Room after restoration.

Three-month-old Prince Harry was baptised at St George's Chapel Windsor, by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie.

Doria looked fabulous in pink. Below, a closer look at her beside Diana's sisters Jane and Sarah. Harry and Meghan have discussed how welcoming the Spencer side of the family has been from the beginning of their relationship, Lady Jane was one of Archie's first visitors.

The Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge looked elegant in a white Anne Valentine creation, and pink Stella McCartney respectively. In a thoughtful gesture, it appears Kate's wearing the same Collingwood pearl earrings, Diana wore for Harry's christening.

Meghan was regal in a custom ivory Dior dress with three-quarter sleeves for the occasion. Whites and creams photograph particularly well with the christening gown. It's a classic, understated look. Meghan paired it with an updo and a matching hat.

The Duchess accessorised with the Cartier earrings she wore on her wedding day.

A spokesperson for the couple said: "The Duke and Duchess are so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son. They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment. Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie".

  3. Charlotte, your post is wonderful! That first photo of the three of them actually brought a few tears to my eyes. Archie is beyond adorable! I was wondering frankly but he is the cutest little boy!!! Harry was a very cute baby but Archie is much prettier, thanks to Meghan. Meghan looks stunning, a word I don't use often. Her hat is great, and it looks like she's wearing a midi dress in her usual style. Very pretty. I LOVE Doria's and Kate's outfits and that they complement each other, as well as Diana's sisters. Camilla looks beautiful, too. What an adorable baby. I can certainly live without knowing who of the usual suspects was a godparent. What terrific photos of the chapel, etc. I love it all. Can't wait for more comments.

On to fashion, I love the coordinating looks with the whites, creams, pinks and Archie's uncle and grandpa in blue. I think my favorite look today is Doria, her hat, turban, wrap? is really unique and the coral pink color is just lovely on her. I see that Meghan wore her wedding earrings today which is such a lovely touch. Lastly, I think Harry looks so handsome in this linen suit!

I really hope that these lovely photos will bring a bit of calm to the current upset being perpetuated by the press. And Thank You Charlotte for such a lovely post!

  20. What a contrast between the photo of Archie with his parents and the photo of Harry with his. Diana and Harry seem very much alone together, Diana's focus entirely on Harry, ignoring Charles as he stands off to the side, an outsider, not looking at either his wife or son. Meghan's eyes are on Harry as she holds her baby close, as he looks at his son while holding Meghan's arm to support her as she holds their baby. None of them seem aware of the camera. What a beautiful photo.

I love how Harry includes his aunts in a position of honor where his mother would have stood.

    2. Underdressed? Curious what you mean and am wondering if it is translation from a French phrase to English. In English underdressed would mean she was wearing slacks and a t-shirt to an event where everyone else was wearing dresses. As far as I can tell, she, Camilla, Doria and Meghan are all wearing very nice dresses. Can't tell what Diana's sisters are wearing although Lady Fellowes' Panama hat looks odd to me.

Lovely family grouping. Doria looks wonderful. Interesting that Harry is wearing a light suit to match Meghan and Archie on the couch. Interesting contrast in the photos of the parents and baby. Charles seems almost out of the picture while Diana cuddles Harry in the chair, while Archie is held between both his parents. Loved the picture of the little family of three. And as usual, Meghan and Harry thanked all the people around the world who support them and are rooting for their success and happiness.

  30. Lovely photos of the family. It was nice to see a bit larger hat on Meghan for a change, and the other ladies looked quite nice, the usual "uniform", but Doria knocked it out of the ballpark! Beautiful color on her and she looks so elegant. The turban style hat is fantastic. Archie is adorable, especially with that touch of red peach fuzz on his little head. Difficult to say who he most looks like since babies have a tendency to change seemingly day-to-day. My niece was a redhead as an infant but she turned into a full on blonde so you never know. It will be interesting to watch the changes in Archie if Harry & Meghan will allow.

  34. I love these closeups! I think Kate looks splendid! She is wearing her preferred style, which is not my favorite, but both her McCartney dress and headband are extra special. The (dreaded to me) pussy bow looks very nice with it's flared ends, and the color is not her usual blue or cream. The shoes are gorgeous (not brown!), and the headband is braided and very pretty. She has her special earrings on -- I think she is making it clear that this is a very special occasion for which she planned well in advance. She has a zillion things she could have taken out of the closet to wear. Will looks like he's trying not to laugh, perhaps because Archie seems to be thinking about crawling out of Meghan's arms. Doria looks like she's giving Charles support in the presence of the formidable sisters. Harry and Meghan couldn't be happier. I bet they release a few more photos later. I would love to see all of Meghan's dress.

    1. Well said! I share your thoughts on those pussy bows, and the dress is too prim ( aside from the “sexy secretary” short skirt); but it’s clear Kate gave thought to honor her husband’s side of the family today. Love Kate’s shoes and head band. The day’s winner for me is Doria, and her wonderful hat. Meghan looks ethereal and understated, just perfect. Someone really ought to have made Harry change out of those scuffed shoes, and the tan suit would be too casual here in the States, at least at my parish. It’s a beautiful family photo.

    1. I imagine K&W thought it would be easier and more about Archie without their three children, one of whom is still very, very young. If they came with their kids, I'm sure there are family photos with them included. Later, if there are more Sussex babies to baptize, the three Cambridges might be included. If Charles has another family gathering photo, then we can see them all.

    2. Small children usually aren't at christenings unless they are siblings of the infant being baptized.

      Delete
    3. Yes, exactly. Those children are too young for this ceremony.

      Delete
    4. The BRF just do not do children at church services. The only exception is siblings at a christening. We might agree with them or not, we can speculate about the reasons behind it, but the fact isbthere was never a chance that the Cambridge children would attend.

    5. Alaina from NJ6 July 2019 at 21:43

I have to respectfully disagree Anon 20:25 and greybird. It’s personal preference or religion specific. I have never been to a christening where the entire family (all ages - including other infants) is not present. It may be tradition for the BRF and that’s ok but it’s not usual for some of us. In fact, it’s highly unusual to how my family celebrates christenings.

      Delete
    6. The banning of children from church ceremonies is a weird BRF tradition. I know children are not allowed to attend the Queen's Christmas mass ceremony either.

But then again George, Charlotte and Louis might have been present, just not present in an official released photo.

      Delete
    7. I would agree with Allison in US that perhaps it was Kate and Williams choice to not bring the children and make it a day about the Sussexes. It may be a missed opportunity for a great family photo but then people will read what they want into it anyway, when in actuality, its Harry and Meghan's decision and probably in keeping with the small private christening.

    8. The Cambridge children are cousins, not siblings, and it’s a hard bar to ask young ones to behave at a church service. I am a member of their church. It’s not the done thing.

  38. Love all the history and details in this post Charlotte. The family looks great.

As for the brouhaha over privacy, I think it’s fair that Harry and Meghan want to keep things under wraps. Charles wants to streamline the monarchy when he’s king. That means with each successive generation that are not in direct line to the throne, children like Archie most likely won’t be part of the working royals. Once these children become adult, they will have to earn their own keep. George’s children (if he has any) will be the direct line to the throne. The children of Charlotte and Louise less so. Archie’s situation will be more like Zara Tindall’s children.

The press demand for access is really more about making money for media empires. The thing is even if Harry and Meghan allowed media access, Piers Morgan and his ilks will still rip Archie’s christening for being grandiose/pretentious/too expensive/breaking protocol, etc. They are setting up Archie as another target for the press to attack because hate is a strong emotion that sells well. For me, this exposes how weak and tenuous traditional institutions have become to allow such manipulation.

So I try to find joy in small things, like a baby's birth or a christening because it still speaks to hope.

  39. I love the photos they released. This is a very informative post, Charlotte; lots of information here that is interesting and not so easy to find all together about the venue, the gown, and the people. The photo of the little family of three is simply beautiful, and the one of the group projects warmth and happiness all around.

I think I have to defend the one of Charles, Diana, and baby Harry. People are saying Charles is shown divorced already from his wife and child, but this is a variation on a much older style of photo, and you notice that Charles' arms are stretched out to either corner of the chair back, in a symbolic embrace while Diana bends tenderly over their son. That we know what happened later should not take away from this moment in time when they could project a bit of unity. (Of course my interpretation is mine, and yours may be quite different!)

    1. Marci Andy, I remember reading a number of people close to the Wales’ said that the time around Harry’s birth was the happiest time in their marriage. Like you say, it is very easy to read things into the photo knowing how it went downhill from there. But that doesn’t mean it was true.

      Delete
    2. "Older style photo"? From what era - the 1890's? This was 34 years ago, not 100. The time of Harry's christening certainly was not the happiest time of their marriage. Diana had said the time leading up to Harry's birth, she and Charles were working on their marriage and getting very close. However, once Harry was born, things changed suddenly, she said "as soon as Harry was born, it just went bang. The whole thing went down the drain." Charles had been hoping for a girl and Diana knew it was a boy but didn't tell him for fear of ruining their bonding and believing that once a healthy boy was born Charles would forget about it. But that's not what happened. Shortly after Harry was born, in hospital Charles made two comments that hurt Diana deeply. One was a comment expressing regret over the fact he was a boy, and the other was "he's even got red hair" - a dig at the Spencer family trait. Charles even commented again at Harry's christening about his disappointment the baby wasn't a girl.

I believe this photo is very representative of that. There's another pose where Charles is sitting on the arm of the chair and Diana is seated, holding Harry, and her body is turned, almost completely with her back to Charles. It's a very odd pose. Surely a happy couple, even as far back as the dark ages of the 1980's, would show more closeness at the happy occasion of their son's christening than Diana and Charles show here.

      Delete
    3. I agree Marci. Here are more photos of Harry’s christening & you can see the happy family. http://bigwnews.com/world-news/behind-scenes-footage-harrys-christening-shows-intimate-family-moments/

Also, their photos were far more formal as indicative of the times in which the BRF lived (versus now as we see with William & Kate & their kids’ christenings). It seems some are judging Charles & his positioning in those old photos— no doubt directed by the photographe-by the new, less formality of this new generation of royals, which is unfair. Photographers are the ones that direct the positions & placements of their subjects.

    1. Hello Anon 19:20, I don’t believe it did. When the chapel and that part of the castle was rebuilt, the chapel was actually moved to a new location, and “the site of the original chapel is now the gothic-style octagonal ante-room which serves as a grand entrance for state dinners.” (https://www.itv.com/news/2019-07-06/private-chapel-for-archies-christening-was-rebuilt-after-windsor-castle-fire/
) No mention of a re-built or new organ, although there may be one. I’m the organist in our local church so I was interested in your question and did a “little” research, which lasted over a very enjoyable 2 hours! Hearing someone play a Willis organ has been added to my bucket list, so thank you for the inspiration. :)

    2. Thank-you, leahmaria. With the intensity of the fire I doubt the pipes would have suvived. I don't even know if such organs are built anymore. My Mother was an organist. I saved her collection of organ music books. She could play the massive ones but what I remember most was her pumping the little organ at the church mission.
Have you heard the organ at King's College? They have a yearly Christmas concert. Gorgeous.

  43. Oh My Gosh, that's one gorgeous looking child!!! Everyone looks lovely! I concur with everyone that Doria looks great! Meghan looks spectacular. It's probably my lack of understanding of Britain & the reporters but I don't really understand what a huge deal this whole private service is. When Kate & William baptized the children it didn't look like a huge deal to the family I didn't think just walking in & we all got a peek.

    1. I agree. I didn't see what the fuss was about before the event, and even more so now. We get to see the same wonderful family photo (plus a nice shot of the M&H with baby Archie) as we did with the Cambridge babies. The only thing different is the pre-christening walk into the chapel. That was a lovely touch, especially for Charlotte's christening (with that cute shot of George peering into her carriage), but all the drama about Harry and Meghan choosing to keep the names of their baby's godparents private, and not having media coverage of this christening, just seems like much ado about nothing. Seems like people will just have to get used to the fact that Archie's parents are going to be very selective about what parts of his life they'll expose to the public. Good for them!

  44. Nice informative article. Love the beautiful pictures shared by the Sussexes of Archie Harrison’s christening! The picture of just the Sussexes is absolutely gorgeous, such a beautifully blessed family! Everyone looks very nice in the large group family photo. I like the consistency of the Sussexes with both their wedding & Archie’s christening pictures taken in the Green room at Windsor castle.

Fashion wise, the clear winner for me, is Doria. She looks exquisite.

Thank you Charlotte ! Been waiting all day to see precious Archie. He’s so cute. I’m seeing his Mom’s eyes and Dad’s baby nose and chin, well, at least for this month of his life. I love that you shared a full photo of the christening gown, I have always wondered what it looked like in a full view. It made me happy to see the Spencer Aunts included.

I thought Harry’s light colored suit looked great for summer. It also went nicely with Meghan’s dress and Archie’s christening gown.

  52. Gorgeous everything! But above all, what a beautiful baby boy! Oh my gosh. He's adorable (and honestly, you can already tell he's going to be a handsome boy). Who does who look like? BOTH parents because, actually, I've always thought that Meghan and Harry look A LOT alike. Loved the color choices of everyone's wardrobe. Harry also looked great in the light colored suit (I wish his brother would *cough* take a hint). Both Duchesses looked ravishing. Meghan looked bridal, truth be told. Kate looked incredible, I loved the color combination and the outfit (except, if I'm allowed a quibble, the braided headband because it looks a little bit like....braided hair in hot pink). In any event, what a day. Beautiful.

  54. Beautiful pictures, love Meghan’s outfit and she’s absolutely glowing. As for godparents, I think we know who at least four might be. Two of Meghan’s school friends from Wimbledon, Jessica Mulroney (she posted on her Instagram a couple of days ago that she was on her way to England and had to take a few days break off it), Tiggy. Not Serena as she wasn’t in attendance. I think there may be one or two people who do not want to be known that they are Archie’s godparents but honestly I think a few do want it known (I’m thinking of not so subtle Instagram posts by Jessica here).
And I love how Diana’s family were in attendance too, and in the official family photo. Perhaps a spencer godparent too.

But oh my god, Archie! He looks like both mum and dad. And he looks like he might have red hair! Love love love :)

From what I’ve read, both Jessica and Lindsay are Jewish. If true, they couln’t be a godmother in a Christian baptism.

      Delete
    2. It's fun to play "Guess the Godparents." Meghan's friends, Lindsay Roth and Jessica Mulroney are both Jewish. It seems unlikely, that a godparent, whose job it is to see that the child is raised in the faith of his/her baptism, would not be Christian. The Church of England doesn't require that godparents be Church of England but they must be baptized.

      Delete
    3. I have a theory, but that is all it is, that Archie might have official and unofficial godparents. Which would explain why they did not announce the names, since you don’t get something like unofficial godparents.
In South Africa you don’t get official godparents, or they are not officially recorded somewhere, it is merely an arrangement between the parents and the godparents. So from my frame of reference it would make perfect sense to ask one of her Jewish friends to be godmother, even though it won’t be recognized by CoE.

Such lovely photos and that black & white one - it feels so personal and special. Archie is quite adorable and no doubt very much loved on by his family. I do understand respecting the godparents wishes to remain unknown but I do wonder if this will just generate more interest and “sources” appearing to share “insider information” I hope not, but I’m not confident that it won’t.

As someone who enjoys photography as a hobby, I noticed a few things that show the blending of the family and it was heartwarming to see. Doria is placed behind Harry, a step away from Meghan and next to Charles while Camilla is sitting. I like that they are next to one another as they both will play an important role in Archie’s life. Camilla is very much part of the family fold but biologically, Archie has 2 grandparents in his life (in my opinion, Meghan’s father gave up his grandparent rights when he started using her and her position for his own gain). With Doria next to Charles and behind Harry, it’s a subtle showing that family is family and they don’t separate between hers and his.

The same goes for Diana’s sisters. Having them in the photo shows the closeness Harry has to her side of the family. It shows they are very much present in his life and will be in Archie’s as well. They are behind Meghan which again is a nod of family is family - there is no separation. They have blended their lives and families. Kate looks relaxed but William’s face is tight - maybe they were taking too many shots and he was tired of smiling?

Archie is quite adorable and at this point, I see more Harry in him but he’s still so young, they change so much so quick.

  65. Lovely family photographs, the parents glowing, the Aunties there. Little Archie is cute - I see ginger/red fuzz on his head from Harry but I think his features resemble Meghan's. That could easily change. Sartorially, everyone looks fabulous but Catherine has the edge IMO. Stunning.

  66. I have a question: Are Diana's earrings now Kate's or are they just borrowed? If they're borrowed, I wonder if Meghan chose not to wear them or how that's even decided. And how they decide who gets what?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Since the earrings were Diana’s personal property it must now belong to one of the boys.
As far as I know there is no shared trust that owns her jewelry and it have to be owned/inherented by one person, it must be the property of one of the brothers. But how and when they divided it we will probably never know.

While it will be sweet to see the sisters-in-law swop and share Diana’s jewels, I think dividing is probably the best option in the long run. What happens when both duchesses wants to wear the same piece to the same event? Who is going to decide who gets to wear it? What if one of them wants to adapt/change a piece and the other doesn’t agree? And then I am not even talking about the increased chance of things gettings lost because both think it is with the other.

      Delete
    2. I'm wondering about the earrings, too. How were/are Diana's jewels divvied up amongst the brothers? I know originally that Harry chose her engagement ring and William chose the Cartier watch, and then they switched when William proposed to Kate. But I'm wondering about the other jewels. Do we think they are in a repository that each wife can borrow from, or have they been divided?

      Delete
    3. I believe they were gifted to Kate before Meghan entered the picture - I want to say they appeared on a tour...? -op

      Delete
    4. I have the same question too.

      Delete
    5. A mystery for sure, about how Diana's jewels were divided, because both sons inherited them. The thing that puzzles me is that Diana had a big and varied assortment of jewellery and we've only seen a small percentage of it on either Kate or Meghan. I think we've seen more on Kate. Meghan is a minimalist and seems to prefer tiny, delicate pieces, so some of Diana's pieces might not appeal to Meghan. I wonder if we will every know the outcome or where the hidden pieces might be.

      Delete
    6. Maybe some of the pieces went to Diana's family, her sisters, her nieces, IDK, a theory perhaps.

This day is about Archie! He has a nice, strong gaze. I am looking forward to seeing him grow up and play with his cousins. The baptismal gown is just beautiful, lovely heritage. Harry and Meghan adore their boy, it is obvious to see. I wish them all the goodness in the world in the years to come.
Meghan looks beautiful, it would have been nice to see the dress with her standing up, maybe in the future we will. And how wonderful for them to have Doria there, I hope she does not mind flying to the UK every so often. She mustn't have been spotted getting on a plane, this is magic!

  73. The original private chapel was quite large and elaborate...but then so was the royal family of the day and the Victorian style. This smaller newer version is just wonderfully intimate IMO and looks exactly like the place the Sussexes would choose. I assume this is also where Meghan was baptized? Just perfect!
Of course the star of the day is adorable Archie - perfection! Everyone else looks lovely as well. Seems the day worked out just as the parents wanted, and the public got their photos right away as well. Onward!

  74. I begin to wonder if the press just thinks Prince Harry hasn't had enough tragedy in his life so far. They successfully hounded his mother literally to her death and even afterwards and now they want to do what? Put strains on his marriage and family in the hope that perhaps they can tear that apart as well? This isn’t journalism. It’s more like some form of mass hysteria.

  75. The styling of the photo looks awkward.
    Both grandmothers should be seated.
Or both Charles and Will can sit with the ladies standing — Kate, Camilla, Doria, the 2 sisters.

I do appreciate Kate’s fashion-styled and formal Christening photos more now. They will stand the test of time. I’m guessing Lady Jane was not expecting to be in this photo. She is usually very well dressed.

    1. Anon 18:50, interesting point. So how? Doria where Kate is? Then Kate next to Charles, then William and then the 2 sisters?

      Delete
    2. Seems like a funny comment. The photo is a little different perhaps because it's a small group and there are three women without men. Kate's last photo had male, female, male, femal, and so on, all in blue suits BTW. If Doria sat down, then very tall Will would have to be towering over his father or remain where he is, which acts as an "anchor." If he were next to his father, then the two blue suits would unbalance the photo. Kate should be next to him, so then you have the two Spencer women next to Charles, which might make him uncomfortable. Having the men sit and the women stand seems tacky and does nothing to honor Doria.

I'm sure Lady Jane knew she would be in the picture. Her clothes look expensive. I think it's wonderful that each woman can be dressed in her own style, not a repeat of the woman next to her.

    3. Perhaps all the blood relatives are standing and the in-laws seated? I think it looks nice, personally.

    4. I agree you. It would have been perfect with Doria sitting in the chair next to Meghan.

Everyone looks lovely and Harry, Meghan, and baby Archie make an adorable family unit.

My nitpicky wish is that the photographer had also seated Harry and Meghan in the center of the sofa (or divan or whatever the proper name is for it). With them both scrunched up towards the left of the furniture piece, it makes them look like they were trying to stay away from Catherine when I'm sure that wasn't the case.

      Delete
    5. I agree with you Border Terrier, Harry and Meghan should have been centered on the sofa. It looks like perhaps they took other pictures with somebody sitting there and didn't move when they took this one. IDK, but they aren't centered :(....

      Delete
    6. I would have preferred the center sofa seat also:)

      Delete
    7. Border Terrier lover, you are on to something. There is something strange about the position of Meghan’s left foot. I cannot work out why her foot is pointed forward. Did she have to move to center?

      Delete
    8. I disagree. There aren't 2 grandmothers. Diana would be the other one. There also aren't 2 grandfathers. And 2 of Diana's sisters are there. What you ate proposing would be a symmetrical staging. That works if there are all players present and no one else. It's also a traditional, symmetrical pose. This arrangement is more artistic. Not better or worse, just different. I think it is beautiful, not only visually, but in communicating relationships. It communicates to me a kindness and relationship between Charles & Doria, love & close relationship with Diana's sisters, and of course, good relationship with William and Kate.

      Delete
    9. I just noticed them sitting to left of sofa. That had to be intentional. That goes along with my previous comment. I see the artistic flow of them sitting nearer their parents. It communicates that the relationships start with their parents (Charles, Camilla & Doria) to their children (H & M) then flow from there to the other family relationships. I think it's a beautiful portrayal of how the value family.

  76. Meghan looks lovely and happy. So glad that the photos came out so quickly. What a lovely photo and it's so different in so many ways. I would love loved to see Meghan wear Diana's bracelet with blue stone. Her hat is lovely and I look forward to seeing her dress fully.

Dying to watch this little guy - Master Archie - go through many stages as he grows. Agree with most that he looks like Harry and Meghan.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I would really like to know about that brooch, too!

And the seating arrangement analysis is getting to be a bit much. The green pillow is puffed up because Meghan is cuddling against Harry's arm. Kate is not ready to bound out of there as stupid reports are saying but is having very good posture so her dress will be viewed best and not slide up on her legs. She looks like she has an open and happy face. Will is good-naturedly amused over something, perhaps the fact that Harry got out of wearing Windsor blue. Doria is nestled up against the soon-to-be King of England, so it's not such a bad spot. She's formed a triangle with Camilla, Charles, and herself.

I remember when H&M were dating and they went to that wedding. Photos of the two sitting at a table showed Harry to look unhappy. The analysis by body language "experts" was that he was bored and wanted to get rid of Meghan. I thought (hoped) they were discussing how Harry would like to be married and was it possible given the problems. I cannot figure out how will's expression can be interpreted as anything negative. Same for Kate. I think this is a great photo and probably was picked, as someone said, becuase it was the best of Archie, then of H&M.

    1. Well said Allison! I agree about the over analysis, don't understand why we can't just enjoy the photo for what it is, a frozen moment in a very happy day for the royal family that they chose to share!!!! I don't know how many pictures I have sifted through to find the best shot of everybody, someone blinked, or looked astray. Quite honestly it is a very good picture of everybody and I am amazed at how well they all come out in photos in general! :) William does look amused at something, like he is stifling a laugh, and Kate looks lovely, happy and lady like. But the star of this photo shoot is Archie, that's what everybody was clamoring for, right, a 'not so artful' shot so we could see his face?? And now that we have it, the vultures swoop in to pick it apart. Let's enjoy it for what it is, one beautiful photo of a beautiful moment in the lives of the British Royal Family, let them enjoy it too.

  81. Agree about the overanalysing, so I’ll leave out the obvious photoshop of Harry’s left shoulder. None of us were there, so none of us know what was said, who was told to sit where, etc. Very doubtful anyone had a choice. Usually the photographer tells the people where he wants them. Some may recall the photo where the photographer was re-arranging the people so many times that Prince Phillip yelled at him to “just take the f-ing picture.” Yes, Phillip is known for his use of profanity as well as saying what everyone else is thinking.

Shifting gears, this may have been covered elsewhere — based on this photo, it’s interesting how similar Camiila and Meghan’s dresses are. The color, the neckline, the shift style, even the fabric look to be very similar if not the same.
