Meet Team Sussex

As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex prepare to commence their autumn schedule, we can expect to see a number of new faces by their sides. Over the summer, the couple have been involved in choosing key aides who will play an integral part in supporting Harry and Meghan as they embark on the next stage of their royal roles. In March, it was announced the Queen and Prince Charles had agreed to the creation of a new household which would be based at Buckingham Palace. With their work in the UK, Commonwealth roles, patronages, projects and their new foundation all in the works, a female-led team of highly-qualified professionals from an array of backgrounds have joined Team Sussex.

Shortly after the announcement the Sussexes' office would be based at Buckingham Palace, news a key position had been filled arrived, with Sara Latham appointed to head up their communication team. Latham brings an impressive set of credentials and experience to the table. In her current role at public relations firm Freuds, she has been tasked with leading the agency's changed agenda over the past several years. Latham worked in the White House in the 1990s for President Bill Clinton before moving to the UK as a government affairs adviser. She also served as a special adviser to the late culture secretary Tessa Jowell. She served as a transition official following the election of President Barack Obama, and worked with Hillary Clinton on her 2016 presidential campaign. Omid Scobie reports she holds dual US/UK citizenship. Sara will report directly to the Queen's communications secretary Donal McCabe.

Diplomat Fiona Mcilwham has taken on the role of private secretary for the Duke and Duchess. Fiona brings incredibly impressive credentials to the table. Also fluent in French and Albanian, Fiona became one of the youngest British ambassadors when she was appointed to Albania aged 35, in 2009. In recent years, Fiona has worked as Director for Western Balkans and Enlargement at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom. On her Twitter account, Mcilwham describes herself as "Diplomat and wannabe supermum". Scrolling through her Twitter feed, it's evident she's an ardent supporter of women's rights and empowerment. The role of private secretary is most prestigious, and Fiona brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table.

Fiona replaces Samantha Cohen who has been described as an invaluable source of support, particularly for Meghan during her first year in the role. Samantha served as one of the Queen's most trusted assistant secretaries, and following her resignation she agreed to assist the Sussexes for a short period. At the time it was described as "a personal gift" from the Queen.  Although she was initially expected to stay for six months, Cohen remains in the post until the new team is fully operational. Below, Samantha behind Meghan and Her Majesty during their visit to Chester last year.

It is thought the couple have also hired an assistant private secretary. I've noticed a young brunette woman accompanying Meghan during events. It's quite possible she's a new member of the team.

For their Digital Communications Lead, former Burberry global social media coordinator David Watkins takes the role. The 26-year-old represented Ireland in cricket and hockey before gaining his degree in economics and politics. Discussing his background, David writes: "I am a marketing, sporting and travel fanatic with both experiences on and off these fields, an International hockey player, Ironman and four-time marathon finisher with passion and knowledge of these sectors. Constantly challenging the status quo with a ‘start with why’ attitude, I find myself becoming more and more intrigued with finding scenarios outside of my comfort zone and asking the question 'How can I help others?" David will be heavily involved in Harry and Meghan's social media and online content creation.

On his LinkedIn page, David discusses his role at Burberry:

'As Global Social Media Coordinator at Burberry, I oversee the planning, strategy and implementation of content across all social platforms to ensure best in class content is produced across projects. During my time on the social media team, I have worked on industry defining social innovations in partnership with the likes of Apple Music, Instagram, WeChat, Facebook, Snapchat, LINE and Kakao; from working with the global Apple team and artists James Bay, Tom Odell and Paloma Faith to showcase Burberry’s iconic history with British music to the first ever brand Instagram and Facebook Live.
I have worked across publishing, content and strategy in social media since joining Burberry in 2015. This includes 20 social media platforms with 50M+ fans, influencer partnerships and platform innovations. I work closely with the Brand team, Art Direction, Production and Digital design to position Burberry as a leading social media luxury brand. In addition, I have supported and partnered on some of the largest Burberry Marketing moments, from the first ever straight to consumer fashion show, the 'complete restructure of the fashion calendar' and global events like London Fashion Week and Blondey McCoy for Burberry in New York.'

With the launch of the Sussex Royal Foundation next month, finding the right people to make Harry and Meghan's philanthropic vision a reality will have been at the top of the list of their priorities. Step forward the indefatigable Natalie Campbell. Natalie was the Director of Insight and Innovation at the Royal Foundation for eighteen months. She and Meghan reportedly hit it off immediately and Natalie was by Meghan's side as she quietly prepared for the launch of Together: Our Community Cookbook. In the video below, Natalie speaks about her admiration for the women of the Hubb: "The women embrace you, they feed you, they make you happy." Natalie takes on the role of Director for the Sussex Royal Foundation. Her Twitter bio reads: "Doing my bit to make at least one life better and having fun along the way."

Natalie's work ethic is outstanding, and in 2011 she co-founded 'A Very Good Company':

"In 2011 I co-founded A Very Good Company (AVGC), a global social innovation agency, that believed in creating a world where people could 'feel good, do good and live better'. Working with brands such as Virgin Unite, Virgin Media, Marks and Spencer, W Hotels, the Guardian and Channel 4, we put purpose, sustainability and inclusion at the heart of our work long before it was trendy and the 'thing to do'. We challenged businesses to think differently. We were proud disrupters of 'business as usual'."

Natalie is also a published author and hosts a radio show and podcast, besides being a board member of Big Lottery Fund, which distributes funds raised by the National Lottery to good causes. You can hear her talk more about the role below.

The inspirational Karen Blackett is one of the first trustees of the foundation. Karen is the chairwoman of cable television company MediaCom UK. She has worked as Chancellor of Portsmouth University, and in 2018 former Prime Minister Theresa May appointed Karen as the race equality business champion. Harper's Bazaar noted: "May appointed Blackett as the race equality business champion, a role that was part of a Race at Work charter aiming to guide businesses into promoting race equality at the workplace, according to Campaign. 'Embracing diversity and inclusion is not a choice, it's a business necessity,' Blackett said at the time. 'As the Race at Work champion, I’m committed to helping businesses address inequality at all levels by taking practical steps such as introducing apprenticeships, offering mentorships and capturing ethnicity data to create a more inclusive and representative workforce.'" In 2014 Karen received an OBE for service to media and communications.

More from the Telegraph:

'The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have appointed a leading media executive known for championing women and minorities as the first trustee of their charitable foundation, as they build their own team to shape their working futures.
Karen Blackett, a businesswoman once named the most influential black person in Britain, has been named as a director at the new Sussex Royal Foundation. Describing herself as an “exhausted mum”, she has been awarded an OBE for services to the media industry and credited with broadening a diverse talent pool of staff.
Ms Blackett wrote in The Guardian in 2014 on how role models can help the business world reflect the reality of social diversity, saying: "Young minorities usually have a limited number of role models, and so choose their life paths from a narrow palette of options. "I am a single mother to a five-year-old boy and I want my son to truly know that he can be whatever he chooses to be, without any barriers related to his skin colour."

A stirring Ted Talk by Karen entitled "It's OK To Be You" in which she discusses the shocking statistic that nearly two thirds of people admit to “covering” – hiding their real personalities at work, to “fit in”.

A stellar team indeed. I'm excited to see Team Sussex in action :)

  2. Thank you for Charlotte for this post. It has been exciting to follow the the news of those who will be working with the Sussexes. I cannot wait for the foundation launch and the new projects to be announced. When do you suppose we should expect tour itinerary. I thought some of the reporters expected the tour to begin mid September? Which will be about 3 weeks away.

    So excited.

  3. Wow, what an informative, well-researched post! I always wonder about the behind the scenes staff members, as well as the hard-working assistants seen as the royals' side during official engagements.
This line-up of new hires certainly looks promising! Can't wait to see what this year brings!

  4. No surprise that it looks like each member of Team Sussex has a work ethic and professional experience to match the Sussex’. Sounds like each new hire will support and enlarge Harry and Meghan’s important work and mission.

    Thanks, Charlotte!

  7. Great job! Perhaps you've already mentioned her, and I missed it. Heather Wong works as the deputy private secretary for Prince Harry and Meghan. Just google her and you'll find out more. She used to work in President Obama's administration. Also, Natalie Campbell, who is a director of Sussex Royal, who formerly was a staffer for the Royal Foundation. In 2018, she and Meghan worked on "Together: Our Community Cookbook," which raised funds for the Hubb Community Kitchen, started by a group of women helping families impacted by the Grenfell Tower fire in London in 2017.

    1. Hello Barbara,

Thank you very much for your comment. I heard Heather planned to move into the private sector, although she's still with Harry from what I gather. I'll ask around and see what I can find.

  11. Wow! When you are surrounded by people such as these it's not hard to understand how Meghan and Harry can shut out the noise and simply carry on with their life-changing work on behalf of others.

Harry, of course, has had more time in the fray. Even so, when you remember his mother's sad end--the anniversary of which is likely near to mind for him as well as all of us--his desire to separate his family's private and public realms is understandable. Add to that the constant threat of kidnapping and assassination (much of which we don't hear about in the press as it's top security). In similar circumstances many people would become anxiety-ridden substance abusers. Even royals who have been born to it have struggled with their roles. Look at Princess Margaret once she was no longer second in line.

I look forward to what Team Sussex will do in the coming decades.

  12. Thank you Charlotte for supplying us with real and valuable information about the Sussexes. I hope we are soon learning more about the foundation and their plans. I just saw a Headline popping up somewhere that Harrys Popularity is weakening. Mrs Junor was complaining about it. I can only say: well done Harry! You have grown up. Become an incredible husband. A wonderful new Dad and an impressive man. I have been interested in the British Royal Family for a long time but never been really inspired by them. Since Harry married this beautiful woman this changed completly.
Harry stopped pleasing everybody and started to be happy. He showed so much courage to really bring change and new energies. This is never easy. With Meghan he moved out of a comfort zone he could have had a very entertaining life in with big marks in popularity. Meghan and Harry are so inspiring in taking risks. Choosing fulfillment, being perfectly imperfect.
I wish them the very best with the team they chose. It sounds very promising. I am sorry for my bad English. But I thank you Charlotte so much for this different calm and yet strong voice of yours among all this noise.

    1. Kristina, your English is quite good!

I believe this is a stellar team!! I cannot imagine Harry's popularity is weakening. I think this next year Harry and Meghan and this team will be tasked with balancing their increasing popularity with direct support of the monarchy.

  15. This looks like an incredible team that we can expect great things from. Charlotte, thank you for all the work in putting together this informative post. A couple of questions: is this level of expertise (former US presidential advisors, former ambassadors!) completely unprecedented in royal teams, or do Buckingham Palace/Clarence House/Kensington Palace also have such caliber people? And another question: are these team members part of the royal team called “courtiers” or are courtiers an entirely different group?

    1. Hello Sophie,

Yes, the staff are often referred to as aides or courtiers. The various households do have incredibly impressive teams surrounding them. Just off the top of my head, The Queen's private secretary Edward Young previously worked for Granada PLC as Head of Corporate Communications and for Barclays PLC. Julian Payne is Communications Director for Charles and Camilla, he served as Director of Communications for BBC and the VP for Global PR for Burberry.

Kate's private secretary Catherine Quinn is another hugely experienced hire. Her last role saw her working as Chief Operating Officer and Associate Dean of Administration for the University of Oxford. William's private secretary Simon Case was the director general Northern Ireland and Ireland in the Department for Exiting the EU.

  16. Thank you Charlotte for such an informative post! I've been seeing bits and pieces about the new Sussex team elsewhere but it's wonderful to see them here and with such in-depth coverage!

I will admit that this has been a difficult summer for me personally and I am looking forward to the fall and the enjoyment I get from seeing Harry and Meghan. I am especially looking forward to seeing how their new foundation will come together, the causes it will support and the issues it will highlight. On a completely shallow note, I'm also very much looking forward to Meghan's post-pregnancy style as I'm in much need of some style inspiration!!

Avec Harry ils forment un couple solaire et dynamique au service de la monarchie.
    Merci Charlotte pour tout.

  18. Harry and Meghan seem almost indefatigable - their own work ethic is really remarkable, and they certainly need top-notch assistants on board. It’s both interesting and gratifying to hear about the excellent team that will be backing them up. It will be exciting to see and hear about all that they will accomplish as they go into the future together! Bless you, Charlotte, and thank you so much for keeping an unbiased perspective as you inform us on their progress! Your blogs are the first internet places I come to in the mornings just before I begin working. It puts me in a positive mood for the start of the day and I so enjoy reading your comments and those of fellow readers.

  19. Very glad to see that Harry and Meghan have their own staff whose focus is on their work alone. I think KP staff must have been stretched really thin with both couples with all of them moving in more individual areas as well as the the Heads Together involving the original three principals. I've read elsewhere that Heather Wong is the deputy private secretary, and it sounded like a promotion from assistant private secretary. She does seem to be always with Harry at engagements still. Not sure if that report predates the report that she was leaving for the private sector.

  20. Thank you, Charlotte, for this very wonderful post. It's such a relief to read something of real substance about the D&DS. I see Meghan's influence in her choice of these people and their response to her personality and vision. I'm so happy that they ignore the noise and move forward with laying the foundation for their work. I look forward to seeing the impact of their efforts.

    Bonsoir Charlotte ,
    Merci d'avance Charlotte

  26. Hi Anne-Sophie, I found this quote and assume it is correct because it is something positive, which the media hates to put out there :)

"... documents show both workers, two of Meghan's so-called 'wise women' left their posts with the charitable foundation on August 22. Buckingham Palace has refused to comment, but a royal source claims the pair were only given director status temporarily for legal reasons."

The paper goes on to say that both women still have the same jobs, so it seems like it's just a legal situation. We have a nonprofit and we had to have a certain number on the board to originally start it.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
