The Sussexes' First Family Holiday & Latest News Updates!

Good evening!

The royals have dispersed from London for summer break, enjoying holidays abroad and time relaxing in Scotland. According to several local reports from Spanish media, Harry and Meghan took Archie to Ibiza for his first overseas trip from the 6th to the 11th of August. Spanish newspaper El País reported the family stayed in a private villa before travelling by private jet back to the UK. The trip, which began just two days after Meghan's 38th birthday, was likely planned to celebrate the occasion and was a nice opportunity to enjoy their first family holiday before their first tour as a family next month.

The Sussexes reportedly enjoyed gorgeous weather on the Spanish island in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain. There were no social media sightings or images taken of the trio from what I've heard, so I expect they enjoyed quiet evenings in, good food and wine (Meghan's favourite Tignanello), walks on the beach, and plenty of playtime with Archie whilst soaking up the stunning scenery...

A view of the old town from the port.

Meghan previously visited Ibiza four years ago with close friends Misha Nonoo, Benita Litt and Heather Dorak.

Meghan shared this post on Instagram with the caption, "We love you Ibiza".

The trip came during several weeks of travelling Meghan did in August 2016, just weeks after she and Harry starting dating. In a piece for the Tig, Meghan reflected on her travels and having the luxury of time to celebrate:

'Inspired by one of my favorite books by Elizabeth Gilbert, I decided to spend the month of August (with my hiatus from filming) to “Eat, Pray, Love.” Or, in my humble interpretation: eat everything, pray (and meditate) often, and simply love my life, every ounce of it.
With the support of some trusted friends who met me along the way for my various adventures, what I discovered was that with the incredible luxury of time, I was able to celebrate my life. And I say that because I don’t think you need money to do this. It wasn’t long ago (cough – about ten years ago – cough) that I only had $40 in my bank account, that I could barely book an audition, and that my circle of friends was even smaller. But even then, without all the pomp and circumstance, I made time to celebrate my life. Maybe it was a pizza and bottle of two buck chuck from Trader Joe’s with a couple girlfriends, tucked in for the night sitting on my living room floor. Or maybe it was a dance party in my tiny apartment or a sobbing session to purge all of those feels with my nearest and dearest.
This is all part of the eat, pray, love journey. Being present. Being vulnerable. The act of celebrating and really truly enjoying your life. And while the locales of my recent getaway were more extravagant than ever before, I feel certain that the same moments of “ah-hah,” the same self-hugs and acts of appreciation, could have been done in the cozy quiet of my home. And that, right there, is the point. To find your own eat, pray, love this week. To snuggle up and relish what you’ve got.'

Meanwhile, there have been several updates on the couple's Sussex Royal Instagram account. They shared an iconic quote: "Words have the power to inspire, which is why we’re happy to share some of our favourite quotes. From members of the public to public figures, from teachers and students to young leaders, we begin with a quote from Diana, Princess of Wales."

In addition to celebrating World Lion Day, they marked International Youth Day by highlighting inspirational young leaders. "As President and Vice-President of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust (QCT) – an initiative that champions, funds and connects Commonwealth youth leaders working to change the world - the Duke and Duchess hope to shine a light on a few of these change making young leaders of the QCT, who are doing amazing things - not because they have to, but because they want to - a choice we all have in life."

To celebrate World Elephant Day, the couple shared excellent news: "We are pleased to announce that since we followed our friends at Elephants Without Borders (EWB) on Instagram in July, when we were celebrating the environment, you and our friend Ellen (Ellen DeGeneres' Foundation) have spread the word and EWB have been able to help protect 25 elephants by fitting them with satellite navigation collars! These collars allow the team at EWB to track the elephants, as well as to learn their essential migratory patterns to keep their corridors safe and open so future generations of elephants can roam freely. In honour of this amazing support, EWB have named their most recently collared Elephant...ELLEN! We can’t wait to see where she will go! Two years ago on World Elephant Day, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined Dr Chase to help in this conservation effort." Unseen photos from Harry and Meghan's 2017 trip were included in the post.

In the above photo, Meghan is wearing her Catbird rings, Kismet Hamsa ring and, as correctly noted by Susan at What Meghan Wore, an "Elephant Hair" silver wire bracelet. Susan shared fascinating background information from Matt Buvkinghausen jewellery:

'The Elephant Hair Bracelet is perhaps one of the most recognized pieces of symbolic jewelry of its kind.
Tribal Legend over 2000 years old states that the soul of the elephant passes through the tail when he dies. The sacred strands of hair from his tail are then woven and knotted in a symbolic manner to form a bracelet which evokes the power to protect its wearer with the elephants strength, wisdom, and spirit.
Worn on the left wrist brings luck in the hunt or quest.  Worn on the right wrist brings success in exploits of love. The four knots represent earth, sun, moon, and stars. Opening and closing the bracelet each time its worn passes the knots over the strands which symbolize the changing seasons creating harmony and balance between earth and it's people.
With the decline in the population of the African Elephant, we have chosen not to add to the shortage by using elephant hair, but rather offer a more attractive and longer lasting piece of jewelry, still representative of the old Africa.'

In a fashion update, the talented Elizabeth from Meghan's Fashion notes the £55 Marks & Spencer Off The Shoulder bodycon midi dress Meghan wore for the Festival of Remembrance is back in stock in black.

It now comes in a new camel colour which would be a fabulous choice for Meghan for daytime engagements. Marks & Spencer is one of several British retailers Meghan is teaming up with for Smart Works.

I expect a trip to Balmoral to spend time with Her Majesty, Prince Philip and other members of the Royal family is next on the agenda. With Harry confirmed to attend the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final in his role as patron on Saturday, 24th, the coming weekend seems likely for a few days in the Highlands. If they are there on Sunday, we should see photos of them arriving at church.

A number of you have been in touch regarding the itinerary for the couple's tour next month. It's understood it will kick off in mid September, meaning we should see the full itinerary in a fortnight or so; of course, it's possible we'll get information on the dates sooner. Royal reporter Omid Scobie says the tour will last around eleven days and we'll see Meghan take on her own solo engagements in South Africa, most likely while Harry visits Malawi, Botswana and Angola. The schedule is said to cover a number of areas including education, young people, conservation and women's empowerment. Before that, Harry and Meghan's royal foundation is expected to be launched with an environmental and community-based project led by Harry. Meghan's clothing collection in support of patronage Smart Works is also expected to launch next month.

  1. Having been a follower of The Tig I am accustomed to Meghan's thought provoking simple writings that she would thread through her life experiences. I especially love her thoughts of Love, Life, Pray. I do hope that others take the time to read your post today and the transcript of Meghan's thoughts from her original trip with friend just a few short years ago. Her honestly is so refreshing to me. She shows us her loveliness both inside and out all the time.

  2. Thank you Charlotte for the update. I hope they had a wonderful time with beautiful memories to treasure. Looking forward to the busy autumn for them.

  3. The tour can't come fast enough! With Meghan and Harry both sure to have packed schedules, I wonder if Grandma Doria will be along to "hold down the fort" with baby Archie during these busy days. They likely already have more formal childcare in place, but it would be a lovely idea.

    1. Before William and Kate took George to Australia a lot of people suggested that Carole should join them. And as I did then, I think it would be a very bad idea, blurring the lines between a work trip and a family holiday. Even though they would obviously cover Doria’s cost themselves it would not always be possible. For example should Meghan and Archie stay at the High Commissioner’s house in South Africa it would be impossible to “pay” for Doria’s accommodation.
The optics would just be very bad.

  5. Thank you Charlotte...what an interesting read about the elephants. I didn’t know about the Elephant Hair Bracelet. I loved reading about the Tribal Legend. I also loved reading how Meghan was inspired by the book Eat, Pray, Love. I think that’s a great idea to celebrate your life, be present and relish what you’ve got. It truly has inspired me, that’s for sure. Great post Charlotte 👍🏻

  6. The dress is lovely in the dark beige -- I agree that it look wonderful on Meghan, and only $55. I know that the expensive clothes are made better, but it would be nice of Meghan and Kate wore at least 50% affordable outfits. They both look so great that anything would look terrific.

I had not heard of The Tig until the news came out about Meghan dating Harry, so I read it for only a short time, but I really enjoyed it. I love that you are giving us some Tig images. Thanks so much!

    1. Sadly, that’s not always the case. Sometimes you pay just for the name while the piece is manufactured as cheap as more affordable clothing (Nike is a prominent and well known example). Everyone who wants to invest in expensive clothing should make sure to research the brand and really try something on in a store. Look at the fabric label, check the seems and zippers.
I have to say in Meghan‘s and Kate’s case- they could even wear more affordable clothes as many outfits are worn just once. Which is my biggest pet peeve. Repeats are such a simple way for good PR and protecting the environment. Private jets, massive private vehicle fleets and tons of clothing just to wear once (obviously some occasion will call for that but they have enough engagements that don’t) are anything but environment friendly. It’s putting private fun first.

    3. C I once came across a small designer’s website that had a 30-challenge, encouraging their clients not to buy anything unless they can wear it at least 30 times. At the time I thought it would be such a great initiative for our royal ladies to support.

  12. I just wanted to thank you for your in depth coverage of "all things Meghan!"

I also thought that this would be a good time to address the issue of "painted fingernails and crossed legs at the knees" that often comes up as a protocol issue from commenters.

Royalhats.net has posted on their August 14th post a photo of Diana, Princess of Wales with her fingernails painted and her legs crossed at the knees.

So, it is a recent misperception that this is not to be done by royal protocol!

This is a good thing to know as we eagerly await photos of the Sussex family on tour!

On a different note friends I would like to share for those interested that in stopping into my local Barnes & Noble bookstore (USA). I was told that the September Issue UK (Vogue) will be available and in stores on September 8th. My local store in suburban Philadelphia has decided that because of the number of requests they will not have a wait list as they do not know the exact number of copies they will receive. Mark your calendars!

I really admire Meghan. Still I do not understand how they can lecture people about climate change and use private planes themselves. Flying First Class and having arranged for private space would be cheaper and more climate friendly. Nevertheless I hope they had a great time in Ibiza.

    1. I so agree Maria. If they must use private jets so often they'd be wise not to talk about climate change at all....

    2. It all depends. If the private planes are flying regardless, having Meghan, Harry & Archie aboard is not going to make a difference vis-a-vis climate change. By travelling privately instead of commercially they avoid the resulting media gong-show. From the beginning of their relationship they have gone to great (and successful) lengths to separate their private time from their duties to the public.

Unfortunately, the UK is not particularly warm during the summer. For someone who grew up in LA, as much as Meghan loves all things British, it's normal to deeply miss the sun. Besides the stint at Balmoral every August, there aren't any places that they can holiday at home, either. In addition, after a few months with a new infant a family can start to feel a little confined.

If they did take a second holiday trip to Ibiza, it is also a practical way to condition the baby to travel as well as work out any issues that might come up as they travel as three rather than two. Some things you can't know or even guess without first hand experience.

Besides, we've become an increasingly intolerant and scolding society due to social media and tabloid press. I thought it was bad in the little place not even a village of 200 heads of household (according to the post office) where I grew up. There were plenty of scolds and tattlers who minded everyone's business when their own wasn't squeaky clean. Now the whole world is in on it.

You can be concerned about climate change and fly--and eat meat, wear clothes, live in a space larger than 100 square meters, drive vehicles, use plastic and and a host of other things that damage the environment. It's impossible to live and breathe in this era without doing damage. However, it is possible to avoid pointing fingers at others.

  15. I am a bit suspicious about the reports of their trip to Ibiza. It is one thing to have a honeymoon at an undisclosed location without being spotted, but spending a couple of days on Ibiza in the height of the tourist season with no pictures? I don’t know.
Add to that, photos have emerge of them arriving in Nice in a private jet from London on Wednesday. Given the time frame they must have returned from Ibiza, spend a couple of nights at home before flying out to Nice again. Just to spend more time secluded in a villa overlooking the Mediterranean. That seems like a lot of to and throw flying with a little baby. Even if they are not queing at airports and have help. And for two very similar trips 🤷🏼‍♀️

    1. There are photos of them disembarking from the private jet in Ibiza. Meghan is carrying Archie and wearing a white blouse and a hat.

    2. They reportedly stayed at a VERY exclusive and VERY expensive gated private area on the island, that pretty much only billionaires can afford (around $30,000 for a week supposedly). Under those circumstances it's not surprising no photos have emerged. I do agree though that two similar trips so close in time to each other seems unusual.

  16. Perhaps I'm incorrect here, but climate change is not something that Meghan has really talked about as a part of her "causes" portfolio. Meghan has rescue dogs, but that does not make her a member of PETA. You see numerous stories of Meghan being against all hunting and preventing Harry from hunting. Has anyone seen an article or interview in which Meghan says she is an anti-hunting advocate? As far as I know, we don't know what her views are about hunting in general. Harry has been bringing awareness of climate change and environmental degradation, and I'm sure should be mindful of his carbon footprint. However, because one tries to do one's bit for saving the environment, we can't completely stop using cars, planes, and trains.

I wasn't talking about completely stopping the use of cars, planes and trains. I only stated that they should lead by example, and stop preaching water and drinking wine, anonym 16:43. Using private planes for holiday (no pressure of time) makes at least Harry lecturing about climate change incredible.

    2. Indeed, much like Prince William who was at the World Economic Forum this year (had a lovely talk with David Attenborough) ) and warned about the threat of climate change and how world leaders are beginning to wake up to this threat. Then there’s the Queen’s Canopy Project (symbolistic, but yay!). And Prince Charles of the loony, hippy 1970’s environmentalist, now 2019 ‘I told you so’, ahead of his time environmentalist. And Princess Eugenie no plastic initiative.

If people are going to go after the royals for jetting off on holidays and their climate change position, do so evenly.

Otherwise, it’s more red herring and it undermines the criticism.

  19. Harry and Meghan have used commercial jets before. I think the real and perhaps only reason for the private jet is privacy/security. Now with Archie, everyone would be trying to get a look and a photo. We don't know whether there are security concerns that have arisen, and I can understand Meghan wanting to not be in an airport and a plane with Archie. She and he are some of the most talked-about people on the planet, so a vacation means privacy. I imagine that Kate has the same concerns about her children.

  20. Ok. You know what? I fly. I fly for work and pleasure. I recycle, plant native trees and shrubs in my local neighborhood, joined a pea patch after years of being on the wait list. I try to reduce my carbon footprint by using less plastic, avoid buying more fleecy clothings (microplastic), using public transportation and am buying more used stuff and making things like appliances, clothing, and car last a lot longer. Am I making much of a dent? No. The kids are doing even more, partly because they are poorer so not taking many plane trips to get around, not owning a car, and buying less stuff. But they get it better than me because It’s their future and they have grown up experiencing the weather extremes with far greater frequency than I did at their age.

Back to the Daily Mail. Pretty funny that the Daily Mail is now the vanguard on climate change and is the hypocrisy police while making oodles of cash by being cynically hypocritical and cheering on climate change deniers. Now the Mail IS going all ragey over Meghan and Harry’s travels and embracing Nigel Farage talking points.... because it has seen the light on climate change? You know, there’s this deal of a lifetime - a bridge ....

When international group of scientists FLEW (yeah, they punt the 1930’s ocean liners) and gathered to meet about climate change, they faced the same “how dare you lecture us, you bunch of hypocrites” trope from right wing media and politicians. Such tactics are very successful in undermining the attempt to spotlight the issue of climate change and the efforts, even small ones, to do something about it. It makes climate change a divisive target, rather than a problem to work on together.

Climate change is here and it’s a terrifically complex and difficult thing to tackle because our modern lifestyle with all its conveniences rely on a LOT of carbon to fuel it.

My city gave itself a big shout out for banning restaurants from using plastic straws, utensils and containers for takeouts. Buying compostable alternatives is very expensive for small business owners, but they do so to avoid expensive fine. Yet Amazon and big grocery chains are free to sell their goodies wrapped up in tons of plastics with no threat of fines. My recycling bin is full. And now, countries like China are refusing to take our dirty recycling because it’s polluting their environment. I realize recycling has become one big detour to avoid tackling better ways to reduce and reuse as long as countries like mine can ship our trash to other countries. That door is closing and recycling is about to get very expensive and dirty for us.

Australia recently met with their island nation neighbors and that meeting was tense. Island nations are facing existential threat with rising sea level. Australia needs to open more coal mines to fuel its economic engine (to continue with its love/hate relationship with China). The two Pacific groups will clash again when climate change refugees from these island nations end up on Australian shores.

The point of all of this is by raging on Meghan and Harry’s flying, Meghan’s dark nail polish, her genocidal avocado diet, her skinny legs, and protocol breaking, one shoulder outfit$, some people hope we can forget about the big issues like climate change, the huge financial and high misery cost of tariff wars and Brexit. When things go south, the knives will get sharper. It’s like watching the paps chasing Diana into the tunnel. No one expected that horrific outcome, and yet, it did and the frenzy continues......

Eventually though, regardless of the BRF and their expensive lifestyle, we exist on the same terra firma (or for some, soon will be underwater); and no level of hate and the Mail distractions are going to wipe away harsher reality. I guess, some people figure they are so old, it won’t matter what comes or they’ve positioned their kids on a hill or a bunker, well bubble wrapped, that they’ll be ok ?!
